It’s nice to experience one side of the spectrum and then another. A lot of those people are really, really poor but they’re the happiest people you’ll meet so it’s quite a humbling experience.

Schools support strict dress codes

Principals from Garin and Waimea College have thrown their support behind strict dress codes after the parent of a Nayland College student questioned the policing of unnatural hair colours. Maxine Hornell says there is double standards at Nayland College because junior students have to abide by a dress code while senior students are allowed to wear mufti and are encouraged to express themselves. Her comments came after her daughter Dayna McElhinney had dyed her hair with “blue tips” and was refusing to revert back despite phone calls from the school. Maxine says she did not think blue tips would be an issue because some senior students had bright pink hair. “There are other students with more hair colour than what is on the end of hers. It’s not that she’s done it to be rebellious, it’s a fashion statement,” she says. Maxine believed there would be more leeway if Dayna was

Plant box thief will return, says manager The person who bizarrely stole a 300kg planter box from the Revive Reuse Shop is yet to be caught, although the manager of the shop says it’s just a matter of time before the offender attempts to steal again. “They will come back, they just can’t help themselves,” says Saul U-ren, who claims the store has been hit by theft every day for the past 15 years. “We know who they are but we don’t know their names or where they live and they haven’t been back.” The Revive Reuse Shop, which is operated by the Kahurangi Trust, sells second hand items which have been dropped off on site. Last month Saul told the Waimea Weekly that

regular customers were getting away with theft because the amount of money they spent outweighed the cost of the items that were stolen. He says he has not reported the thefts to police because without a lead, “it’s just pie in the sky to them”. “It’s a hard thing to follow up and I know their resources and time are both very limited.” His comments came after someone was spotted on a surveillance camera emptying dirt from the planter box outside the shop and then driving off with it, after hours. Saul says talks were still ongoing with the Tasman District Council in relation to getting street lights installed, which he says will make a “huge difference”.

Hundreds ride to Ranzau Ranzau School principal Dave Sampson says Saturday’s Ride to Ranzau was an “awesome” community event, participated by hundreds of people. Event-participants cycled from Jubilee Park through to Ranzau School before enjoying food and entertainment at the end. Dave says the event grew considerably

since its inception last year and that the atmosphere was awesome. “It was really well supported and the kids put in a lot of effort to decorate themselves and their bikes,” he says. “There was a lot of creativity and it was definitely bigger than last year.” The event was created because the school wanted to utilise the Great Taste Cycle Trail which ran right past its premises. “The opportunity for family and friends to do an activity and get them to spend time together was really cool.” The money raised from the event will go towards completing the fitness track and the developmental area.

Local man wins Aussie mural competition A Tapawera artist now living in Melbourne has scooped an international mural painting competition earning himself a prize of $12,500 cash. Kristopher Thomas, who moved to Melbourne three months ago, hoping to cash in on its arts culture, took out

the Tasmania-based International Mural Fest for his mural titled “The Other Side”. He says the aim of the mural is to give viewers the opportunity to step through a demolished urban wall and discover natures wide open spaces on the other side. “Thirty people entered internationally and I was lucky enough to make the top nine. I never expected a win, but was of course hopeful,” he says. The International Mural Fest is held annually in the township of Sheffield during the Easter weekend. Each artist must complete a 2100mm x 4800mm mural using the same poem as their mural’s central theme and inspiration. Each year a new poem is selected. Kristopher says he has only ever painted three murals in his six year career, one of which is currently on the public toilets in Tapawera. Putting the paint brushes down and standing back to view the masterpiece is key during the long process, he says. “But once the initial sketch is complete it’s just bigger brushes and strokes.” Kristopher, says he will use the money to travel and to put into future business plans.

Volunteers sought for Vietnam build

Paul Shutte and Andy Farmer are on the search for people to join a Habitat for Humanity trip.

Habitat for Humanity is like a bug and once you’ve got it, you can’t stop. That’s the words coming from Andy Farmer and Paul Shutte, who are preparing for another overseas journey to help build homes for those in need. Andy and Paul are searching for 15 open-minded, willing Nelson volunteers

to join them and 150 Kiwis in Vietnam in August. The location for the build will be in Tien Giang, an area prone to flooding. Residents in the area cannot afford to constantly repair their homes and it is hoped the 25 new homes will transform the community. The pair first got involved in Habitat for Humanity during

a trip to Nepal and say it has been a real eye opener. “For me I would’ve never gone to these places unless I was on a Habitat-type build. Nelson’s model trains have been given the once over ahead of this weekend’s night time train rides and train driver Noel Dyer says he is looking forward to the crowds of families set to climb aboard. The annual event is put on by the Nelson Society of Modellers members on the first weekend of daylight savings as a fun event for the community. Each year the event attracts more than 1000 people, most of whom head down in their pyjamas to experience “the thrill of the trains at night time” says Noel. “We do it for the sheer enjoyment of playing with the trains at night time, seeing the little kids smiling. We are big kids ourselves really.” You can catch a ride on one of the model trains this Saturday down at the Nelson Society of Modellers at Tahunanui Beach between 6pm and 9pm, $1 per person.

Fair coincides with anniversary The Nelson branch of Save the Children is holding its annual fair on April 13. This year will be the 50th anniversary of the local sector and organisers are hoping for another successful fair as it will be the perfect way to celebrate the

milestone. The fair is a major fundraiser for Save the Children and runs by selling donated goods including kitchenware, linen, toys, jewellery, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables, jams, pickles and home baking. Some of the profits this year will be

used to help fund educational projects in the Solomon Islands, enabling children to develop better literacy and numeracy skills. The fair is held at the Stoke Memorial Hall this Saturday and will run from 9am until 12noon.

Just a thought... Currently our political leaders have, under the guise of 'rights', chosen to act undemocratically and irresponsibly by ignoring thousands of submissions to the 'same-sex marriage' bill and are pursuing legislation that is contrary to God's design for marriage and society and also contrary to the wishes of a high percentage of New Zealanders. No one has the right to redefine marriage which is a natural institution found in all religions, cultures and societies and is in no way the monopoly of just the Christian and Judeo-Christian traditions. Of even greater concern is that they have chosen to ignore the 'higher law' that exists for the benefit of society, which is defined as ‘a principle of divine or

moral law that is considered to be superior to constitutions and enacted legislation.’ History has shown that when a ‘higher law’ is violated there are consequences for that society, but it seems that lesson has not yet been learned! Throughout history there have been those who have tried to isolate and legislate Jesus Christ and his influence out of society and even the authorities of his day thought they had succeeded when they had him killed, accusing him of blasphemy and treason. The apostle Paul said "that if the rulers of the day had known God’s plan, in hindsight they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." It was Sir Winston Churchill

who said: “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” The prophet Isaiah says God's ways are so much higher than our ways and his thoughts so much greater than our thoughts, so I ask: “who are we to think we know better?” Elsewhere it states God's ways are perfect and his wisdom is profound and precious. History and hindsight can be great teachers, but God has provided us with insight as well as foresight, or the ability to see beyond the ‘seen.’ Jesus said he who has ears to hear should listen and understand, so it is my prayer and plea that our democratically elected leaders will listen to the voice of reason and act responsibly by stopping this unnecessary piece of legislation! - Ross Ferguson, Richmond Community Church.

• Long term, predominantly elderly, residents and ratepayers are currently being rated off their properties and out of their homes by the Tasman District Council (TDC). • In September 2009 TDC “at the stroke of a pen” landbanked our properties for the next 50 years to meet the Council’s proposed requirement for business development. • We had repeatedly been assured by Mayor Kempthorne and Councillors since 2007 that our rates would not increase with the new zoning (Mixed Business) until the roading and infrastructure was in place and commercial development had commenced. • At the next valuation in September 2011, Quotable Value Ltd valued our properties on the basis of “potential commercial use” rather than as existing use. • The outcome is that rates have increased dramatically. For example, rates of $3,370 in 2011/12 have increased to nearly $12,000 in 2012/13 ($225 per week) • Since 2009, nothing has changed for the residents in the affected properties. We still have no footpaths, we are on septic tanks and provide our own stormwater systems. We are on the same street as the Tasman District Council and less than 2km from their offices. • Other Councils throughout New Zealand have a Remission of Rates Policy – Land Affected by Plan Changes. Nelson City Council has and so too does Gisborne District Council where the current CEO of TDC previously worked. Why do we not have such a policy in Tasman? It is our belief that Council is revenue gathering to service their debts of $156million, increasing by another $18million this year and expected to rise to $310million within 10 years. We are first on their list – beware all Tasman residents and ratepayers – you may be next!

Lower Queen Street and Headingly Lane

The Council has asked for submissions on this issue but has included two separate policies to be commented on – thus creating confusion as to what is exactly being proposed. Council has emphasised that if our rates are remitted, there will either be a substantial rate loss or the amount will have to be added to rates of others. The total amount we are talking about is less than $40,000 over all the affected properties – a large amount when shared between only a handful of houses but approximately $1.80 if shared between all Tasman’s ratepayers. The Council does not mention these amounts in their document. If the rezoning had not occurred then the rates collected would have remained the same as in previous years so there is no actual loss of rates at all. There are extensive terms and conditions in the two proposals which essentially exclude almost all the affected ratepayers. It appears the Council have deliberately sent out a document for public consultation that will have little or no bearing on their decisions. Statements such as “ (4) shall be at the sole discretion of the Council” and “(5) The Council may refuse to remit rates even where the conditions set out in this policy are met by a Ratepayer.” are unbelievable. Why go to the expense of producing such a document when, regardless of the opinion of the ratepayers, those affected may be excluded at the whim of the Council? The current culture within the Council is to attack anyone who has had the willingness to stand up and bring to the Council’s attention any genuine concern that does not equate to the Council view. This needs to stop and the voices of the ratepayers must be heard. We need the help of all Tasman ratepayers – please take the time to have your say and make a strong submission to the Tasman District Council. Authorised by M. Clark 544 1484

Amazing the pressure some parents will put on liquor outlets to sell them alcohol for their underage teenagers, who are often standing right beside them at the counter and tell lies and say they will be drinking at home with their parents supervision. I see it every weekend and they sell it to them knowing it will be consumed by a minor. Come on the age is 18, sales to parents to supply underage teens should be banned!! between freedom and responsibility and independence. Sometimes we get it wrong. Sometimes kids get it wrong. I know when I was a teen (say, 14) our group ranged in age from 12-18 all it takes is one 18 yearold to buy everyone’s alcohol. I don’t know what the solution is, I agree the behaviour (from what I’ve heard) is not acceptable. Beth Rogers. Lets remember also, the article was referring to a minority as is usually the case in the press, not all young teens there were drunk, nor were did their parents leave them there until 12 o’clock. I droppped off my sober 15 year old son and friends at 6pm and picked them up at 10pm still sober. However even they noticed the others who were drunk and were not impressed, I agree it’s slack parenting to allow your kids to behave like that knowingly. I find it hard, I want to give him leeway to show he can be a responsible member of the public, and then stuff like this taints all teenagers. My personal mantra is be trustworthy and responsible and I will trust you and allow you responsibilities, obviously a small number of parents don’t care (or more likely don’t know) what their kids are up to because as others have pointed out teens are smart! Hey we have all been there too!! It’s a tough one, because it sucks if a minority group destroy a family event for others. Susan Tonks.

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club The first dusting of snow has hit Mount Arthur and the air temperature has dropped a few degrees along with the sea temperature. This means the fish will be thinking about moving out slowly into deeper water. Fortunately the Easter weather was pretty good and a lot of people got out fishing. We found that rod fishing for snapper was a bit slow and decided on the second day to deploy the longline, which is a great help to see if there are in fact any fish about. For those of you not familiar with how long lines work I will run you through the process. Snapper generally feed while the tide is running. When long lining from boats or kayaks, sets over clear bottom parallel to rocky outcrops or coastline can yield good fish even when the water is clear. Normally, for small boats and kayaks, a 25 hook recreational longline requires just a 25cm hand spool which is compact and very easily handled. On larger boats a 3:1 ratio geared beach reel can be fitted with an aluminium pipe around half a metre long to fit into a rod holder. The first clip on the reel is clipped to a marker buoy with a flag or a large brightly coloured float and dropped over the back of the boat. Motoring along at between 500 and 800 revs, or about 4 or 5 knots, the dropper line peels off the reel or hand spool. At the bottom end of the dropper line is a cord connecting the dropper line to the pre-stoppered hook section. In the centre of this cord a small loop is tied and provides for the placement of the first grapple. The baited traces are removed from the rack and clipped over the mainline one at a time. Two stoppers are let to pass before the next trace is clipped on. Be careful to maintain your boat speed. Speeding up

When the 25 traces have been connected to the mainline another grapple is attached to the second cord and the back dropper unwinds from the reel or hand spool. At the very end of the dropper another clips secures the line top the reel. Unclip it from the spool and attach the second float and then toss it over the back of the boat and leave the line to fish for an hour or so. To retrieve the longline simply motor back up to your first flag or float. As each trace is removed from the mainline they should be stored back on the trace rack ready for the next set. From our set we landed six 40cm brim which we otherwise wouldn’t have caught on the rods. The spat farm has been fished hard over the last few months and it would appear that the big kingfish have been a bit shy and only rats have been sighted. The odd big snapper is still about but it seems that the fish might be slowly heading up the coastline. The fringes of the marine reserve in the Abel Tasman have also been fishing well with some nice tarakihi, brim and up to 40cm blue cod being taken. Large schools of kahawai have been sighted underneath working birds and have been up to 3 kilos in size.

Wakefield were given a tough introduction to life in division one, sinking to a 6-1 home defeat against Nelson College on Saturday. But despite the loss, manager Richard Malcom says the side is just happy to be competing in Nelson’s top competition for the first time in the club’s 30 year history. “I have to take my hat off to the guys at Nelson College, they were very well organised as a team,” he says. “It was a lot quicker than what we were used to but from our perspective, with a team that has only been training together for a couple of weeks, against a team with guys in the Nelson Falcons, they certainly deserved the result.” Richard says the club’s goals for this season were to reach the top four in its first ever season in the Nelson Pine Industries division one competition, while also hoping to push into the second round of the ASB

Having a ball and keeping independent Richmond based Oakwoods’ resident Helen Cook, has found the key to staying “forever young”! Helen, along with her husband Alan, have recently left their farm in Mahana, where, until recently, they were both very active; raising sheep and cattle. Helen had a large garden and has a very active family with a number of grandchildren. Despite always being quite active, Helen has become aware of some of life’s inevitable changes in the last few years: with a few more aches and pains and the first signs of being a bit slower to do jobs at home. Concerned that moving from a farm life into a retirement village might curtail her independence and her fitness, Helen saw a flyer for an exercise class at Richmond Physiotherapy Centre. Once a week, Helen has been attending a strengthening and balance class in the bright sunny gym at Richmond Physiotherapy’s clinic in Lower Queen Street Health. “It is so handy to pop over the fence to this class where I am having lots of fun and working hard for an hour and noticing the improvements”, says Helen. Physiotherapist, Sharon Bailey, who supervises the class, says there is good scientific evidence that an exercise pro-

gramme that includes specific strengthening exercises benefits an older person quite significantly. In particular, bone density loss is slowed which helps protect from bone fractures if there is an accidental fall. Muscle tone is preserved, which helps an older person stay independent by building the larger muscles in the legs and arms so sitting to standing is easier and general mobility is improved. Balance exercises along with strengthening can also help prevent falls and the overall benefits for an older person might make the difference so you can stay in your own home longer or be active and independent in a retirement village. Sharon’s exercises involve using light hand weights and rubber tubing for improving arm strength. Leg strength exercises use body weight as the resistance and in some cases weights and tubing are added to increase the difficulty. Maria Fiatarone Singh, a professor at the University of Sydney School of Medicine was recently quoted as saying, “If I had to do only one thing for the frail older person, it would clearly be weightlifting exercises, and not any other form of exercise.” Even people over 85 years of age show marked improvement and can safely

Triathlete takes out Nelson round

Full time triathlete Tom Davison had his best road racing result winning the second round of Benchmark Homes Elite Cycling Series in Nelson over the weekend with an impressive display of climbing in the last 500 metres. Tom won the 132 kilometre race in three hours and twenty four minutes, making his winning move at the top of a tough 20 percent final climb that led to the finishing line, leaving Tom Hubbard, Tim Rush and Scott Thomas unable to match his climbing over the final 200 metres. “We were all looking after Robin [Reid], who was clearly our team leader, but his legs were pretty stuffed after his solo effort in winning the GrapeRide yesterday,” he says. The 23 year triathlete joked he probably ‘wouldn’t go for a run’ after today’s race, as he now looks towards heading to the United States in two weeks to start his American triathlon campaign.

Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust Public Meeting A public meeting, specifically for Nelson/Tasman business operators, is on Wednesday 17 April 2013, 5.30 pm – 7.30 pm at Motueka Top 10 Conference Room, 10 Fearon Street, Motueka. There will be an update from the Coastal $800K group on trail construction, the passport, benefits of being an Official Partner and Virtual Trail fundraising will be presented. The Mapua to Kaiteriteri section of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail is due to open in July this year. As with former open Great Taste Trail sections, it is expected that usage will be high, building up to perhaps 300 people per day during the summer months, as recorded on the new Nelson – Mapua Trail last summer.
