Armed police swoop on Richmond property Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Police are still looking for two men involved in an alleged altercation and robbery that resulted in a call out involving armed police and a police dog and handler searching a house on Stratford St in Richmond on Friday. The rare sight of armed police marching through Richmond streets was a “necessary response to a potentially dangerous situation” that developed after two men took off following the incident, senior sergeant Blair Hall says. Police launched the operation after receiving information from a member of the public about the location of a vehicle related to the incident at a Collins Rd property. Police responded quickly, closing off Stratford St before searching a property on that street. Two armed officers carrying rifles were involved in the search as a “precaution” after reports that the incident may have been gang-related. “We had officers armed because we didn’t know who we’re dealing with,” senior sergeant Blair Hall told the Waimea Weekly. “The

is already planning to do a bigger “mass production” version next year. Sarah baked around 80 Anzac biscuits and sold 20 packets of the beautifully-wrapped cook-

to bake enough for another 30 bags to meet the demand. “We always do lots of fundraising things at Sinful so, when

Police found the vehicle at around 1.30pm but called off the search just before 3pm when they couldn’t locate the alleged offenders. Blair says the investigation is continuing but at this stage no one has been spoken to from the other side of events. “We still want to clarify what happened from that point of view,” he says. I’d never made Anzac biscuits in my life but everyone loved them. “We also got lots of compliments about the work we were doing to raise funds for Anzac Day - I didn’t expect it to be so popular.” Richmond-Waimea RSA treasurer Stuart Mirfin says Sarah and Sinful did a wonderful job providing all the ingredients for free and then baking and selling the biscuits. The RSA also puts on a function for members who are over 90. “They’re the ones who served in Korea and World War II so there are only about a dozen left now.’’ Although Sarah and many other people made generous donations to the Poppy Day appeal, Stuart says not everyone was so giving. “I went into one office down on Queen St and not one of the people in the whole office gave anything. P contamination cools region’s housing market Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
P contamination is deterring some investors from buying residential properties in Nelson and Tasman contributing to the region’s housing market cooling off after months of rapidly rising prices. Quotable Value figures for April show that house prices are still rising with both Nelson and Tasman showing a 16.9 per cent increase over the last year. The average house price in Nelson was $527,422 while Tasman’s average was $521,575 - house prices rose 3.8 per cent over the past three months in Nelson and 4.7 per cent in Tasman. However, Quotable Value Nelson registered valuer Craig Russell says that “investor activity appears to have cooled off ” and one of the reasons for that is the “implications around P contamination”. Craig says the cost of remediating houses contaminated by P can range from $10,000 to $25,000 and that’s putting off investors. “There are quite a few properties that are coming back testing positive for P contamination so, if you buy a rental now,

P-contaminated homes are putting some investors off the Nelson-Tasman region’s housing market, says QV. there’s a risk that you have to pay the cost of remediation,” Craig says. “I’ve talked to quite a few people about this and the consensus is that the risk adverse investors are tending to stay away from that.” Craig says the “worst case scenario” is that a contaminated house has to be demolished although “most of the cases are to do with P users and not manufacture so that doesn’t tend to be so bad.” Craig says the Reserve Bank’s Loan Value Ratio restrictions, which require investors to pay a higher deposit, have also contributed to the declining investment in the residential property market. A likely rise in interest rates and reduced returns from rentals are other factors impacting on the amount of investment. “The majority of buyers are

more cautious with their purchasing decisions given buyer’s reduced tolerance levels for debt and possible increased debt servicing from increased interest rates on the back of strong inflation figures.” The average weekly rent in April was $326 in Nelson and $361 in Tasman although Craig says there could be “some upward pressure put on rents over the coming months” if interest rates increase. Despite investors cooling off, Craig says the region’s house prices are still “strong” especially “in outlying small townships which typically lag strong value level growth in the main centres”. “Buyers, at this stage of the property cycle, often widen their purchasing parameters due to affordability and the trade-off of commuting.”

Powering Nelson for four decades Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
He’s kept our power running for the last 44 years, but Brightwater linesman Ken Allen has officially decided to put down his tools. Friday night marked retirement for Ken, who has worked in the power industry in Nelson and Tasman since 1974. Ken moved here from Wellington when he was 21, and his brother showed him the job ad in the paper. “I like the outdoors, so I decided to apply,” he says. “When I started out it was called the Waimea Electric Power Board, but it was contracted to different companies over the years – Tasman Energy, Tasman Electrical, Mainpower – and now, Delta.” For most of his career, he did oncall fault work, and has attended a whopping 450 callouts since 1981, under every circumstance imaginable. “You’re the first response,” he says. “There were many, many times I was called out in the middle of the night, during huge storms, and sometimes you’d be working all night, and the family would worry about me coming home. “Basically, my job was to get the power back on – a lot of that was just replacing fuses, but the linesmen were called out to the major events, when lines and poles were

during a big storm that hit Ashburton. Ken says there have been a few changes in the industry since 1974. “As a whole it has become more regulated, that’s the biggest thing – there are more safe working practices.” Ken says he had a “fantastic” send off at McCashins Brewery on Fri-
day night, and is looking forward to a three-and-a-half month trip to Europe, which he leaves for this week. “I’m keen to move on, but I’ve had lifelong friendships through my career. A lot of people these days go from job to job – but for me it was the people who worked there.”

World’s fastest Mini back home The world’s fastest Mini is back in town. The Project ‘64 Mini will join the eclectic collection of 120 classic cars at the National WOW Museum today, back from its 2016 record-breaking runs on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. At Speed Week in August 2016, the Project ‘64 Mini Cooper S beat its own 2012 record of 146.6mph (236km/h) and set a new one in a different class. The Mini’s 2016 record top speeds were achieved with a 970cc A-series power plant 144.033mph (231.799kph) on race petrol and 156.006mph (251.067kph) on methanol. The Mini also reached 166mph (267kph) into a 9mph (14.5kph) headwind, but this was not converted into an official record due to a sudden loss of oil pressure at 144mph (232kph) during the record-setting run. Following Speed Week, the Project ’64 team transported the celebrity Mini to Los Angeles for an appearance on American comedian Jay Leno’s global hit show— Jay Leno’s Garage. WOW chief executive Gisella Carr says that, like many others in Nelson, the museum had supported the Project ‘64 Mini from its beginnings and relished watching her get faster over the years. The Mini is now the second fastest car in the museum’s collection. It is faster than the 1939 Ford Deluxe Coupe V8 Moonshine runner, known to clock about 87mph/140kph, and is second only to the Ferrari 456, which can hit 188mph/302kph. “The amazing team behind her, led by Victory Automotive’s Guy Griffith and Garry Orton, deserves immense recognition for doing what many said was impossible,” says Gisella. “Afterall, there are many reasons why you wouldn’t attempt what the Project ’64 team attempted, given that Minis aren’t built to go quickly while driving in a straight line and its aerodynamics are similar to those of a brick – as driver Nelson Hartley attested. Visitors can see the World’s Fastest Mini at the National WOW Museum in Nelson, from Tuesday 9 May, at 1 Cadillac Way, off Quarantine Rd, Annesbrook, daily from 10am to 5pm.

Big bonus for local couple A Richmond couple say winning $1 million in April’s Bonus Bonds draw couldn’t have been more timely. The husband and wife, who wish to remain anonymous, found out about their big win last week when they were paid a visit by a local ANZ staff member. “I thought he was here to see me about my KiwiSaver savings, since I had just turned 65,” the woman says. “When he handed me the congratulatory letter from Bonus Bonds, saying we had won $1 million, it was just unbelievable.” The couple, who have reached retirement this year, have decided they will reinvest the money and not touch it for five months. “It gives us the chance to think clearly about how we want to spend it. It’s a lot of money, it will change things for us, we want to be wise,” she says. However, the couple do have plans to shout their family a holiday. “We thought it would be really special to be able to have the whole family, including grandchildren, on holiday together, so that will definitely be something we will do with the money.” The couple believe the biggest impact the win will have is on the way they will live in retirement. “We can enjoy the little things more, like taking trips and dining out without having to worry about always eating into our savings.” The couple won $5000 when they initially invested in Bonus Bonds in the 1990s. They only had $10,000 invested in Bonus Bonds when they won $1 million. “We’ve had great odds so far … we’ll definitely be re-investing,” she says.

Vintage Car Club celebrates with open day Simon Bloomberg Restoration is what Nelson Vintage Car Club’s members do, so it’s not surprising that they have transformed a run-down old building into an immaculate new-old clubrooms at the Top of the South Speedway on Lower Queen St. The former Speedway Association rooms were “a bit of a mess” when the club purchased the building in February 2014. However, the club’s volunteers completely renovated the old building and they will be officially opening the new, improved version on Sunday. “It was originally a hall at the forestry camp near Rai Valley until the speedways guys relocated it here for their clubrooms around 1982-85,” club president Jim Wareing says. “When the speedway moved into their new clubrooms we took over their old building and set about renovating it - it was going to be demolished so you can imagine it was a bit of a mess.” Jim says the club’s volunteers spent hundreds of hours working on the old building with retired builder Ron Johnson overseeing the project. The club also benefited from a $40,000 grant

will be holding a display of some of their cars, as well as cars and motorcycles from all the region’s 27 motoring clubs, as part of the celebrations. “It’s not a fund-raiser -it’s free
and a chance for people to find out about our club and see some of our members’ cars and watch some fun events. There will be all sorts of vintage cars and, with all the other car clubs, we’ll have a
pretty impressive display.” Jim says the new clubrooms are “a big change for the club” which had been based at Founders Heritage Park since 1964. He says Lower Queen St is a perfect site for the clubrooms because it saves members “from driving right through town to get to the start of a rally and then driving back through town to finish.” “We have plenty of room at Lower Queen St too and we get on well with the speedway guys,” Jim says. “This is home now and long may that last.” The club has 385 members and holds a club night and club run every month and also organises a ladies run for lady drivers. Jim says members typically own two or three vintage cars and often take them on tours around the country. National president Diane Quarrie will officially open the clubrooms at 3pm and award 50 year badges to two members Tony Hansen and Jack Ainsley. The club will also present the Restoration of the Year with “three or four cars that will be on show for the first time” in line for the award. The public can drive through the speedway pit gate on Lansdowne Rd from 1pm to see the car display. Admission is free.

RSE workers from Vanuatu will be sharing some of their culture through a concert this Saturday, supported by Richmond Church of Christ and Byron Stephenson from Focus Central, standing fifth from right. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
RSE workers put on concert Jessie Johnston Orchard workers from Vanuatu will be singing songs and playing music from their home villages during a concert aimed at sharing their culture and raising money for a mission-led building project. Richmond Church of Christ supports the mission work in Vanuatu and has always been interested in meeting the NiVan people when they see them in Richmond and Motueka. “From that we have got to know many of them over the last five or six years and some of them come to our church when they’re here,” says Richmond Church of Christ pastor Steve Rollo. “We’ve had them come and have an evening with us and recently one of our church members died and his dream always was to have some of the NiVan people sing at this funeral, so some of them were able to have the afternoon off work and come and sing at the beginning of his funeral.” Those performing during the concert are currently working on McLean’s Orchard in Motueka and will be performing a number of songs, some Christian and some traditional to their Vanuatu villages. A handful of them have also used their spare time to hand-
make string-style instruments, that they would normally use back home, which will feature in the concert. “One of the key ideas is that we have a project at the moment to help build a church in one of the villages where some of the NiVan workers have actually come from. We thought it would be a good opportunity for people to not only enjoy their culture but maybe learn about the project we’ve got going as well,” says Steve. “We want to encourage the NiVan workers too, this year there are 10 people from that village, in Motueka, which is the first time for them to ever come out of their own country.” Many of the workers are from isolated Island villages where everyday life often involves singing together and as a church, Richmond Church of Christ always tries to be welcoming to them when they come to New Zealand. RSE workers like those performing at Richmond Church of Christ have previously held concerts in Motueka and Blenheim. The concert will be held at Richmond Church of Christ on Saturday, May 13, from 7pm. Entry is a donation and the church hopes people enjoy the relaxed night, full of singing and music.

Music group helps out School of Music
11
Nelson School of Music representative Colleen Marshall, left, with Music on Friday’s Cecile Strang, centre, and Dorothy Lawrence at the group’s monthly meeting at St David’s Church in Richmond last Friday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.
Simon Bloomberg A Richmond-based classical music appreciation group will be taking a seat in the Nelson School of Music auditorium after donating $750 to the school’s $6.4 million restrengthening project on Friday. Music on Friday has been selling music DVDs as a fund-raiser for the School of Music’s historic headquarters on Nile St which is being redeveloped after it was closed because of earthquake risk in 2015. On Friday, the group’s chairperson Cecile Strang handed over a cheque for $750 to a representative of the school, Colleen Marshall, to sponsor one of the seats in the refurbished auditorium. The group’s donation will be acknowledged with a brass inscription plate on a seat. It will also receive an invitation to an exclusive event for the 300 seat sponsors once the school reopens next February. “We’ve donated to the School of Music before in a very modest way but we wanted to do something more significant,” Cecile says. “We have about 50 members so we collected the proceeds from our DVD sales until we had enough to sponsor a seat.” Colleen says the school is indebted to all the individuals, businesses and community groups like Music on Friday that have sponsored a seat. The donation from Music on Friday is typical of the grassroots support the school is receiving from the community, she says. Music on Friday meets at St David’s Church on Florence St on the first Friday of every month to listen to classical music. There is no joining fee and anyone is welcome to attend.

Bird Club holds 62nd show

Jessie Johnston Reporter
jessie@waimeaweekly.co.nz From canaries and finches to love birds and parrots, local and visiting bird enthusiasts put their best feathers forward for Nelson Bird Club’s annual show. The 62nd show was held at Hope Community Hall and club secretary Anne Fryer says around 350 birds were entered into the competition. Enthusiasts from Nelson and Waimea joined visiting breeders from the West Coast and Christchurch for the weekend, which featured 16 different sections. Richmond man Tom Jessop has been showing since 1968, although his family has had them since he was six years old. “I enjoy winning and also talking to different breeders from all over New Zealand,” says Tom. “I was brought up on the farm with chooks and bantams but we didn’t show them, now I own around 150 birds, you breed and pick the best for showing.” In total, Tom showed 19 budgies, eight Norwich and eight Zebra finches, winning best bird in section for his budgie and best in section for his Norwich Canary. Stoke breeder Rick Rawson was also taking part in the annual show over the weekend, having been showing for around 40 years. “My grandfather used to show birds but I had friends who talked me into it really, it’s just an absorbing hobby, you spend quite a bit of time with them,” he says. Rick now shows in partnership with his son and says they had 30 birds on display over the weekend including Bengalese and Zebra Finches and Gloucester Canaries. Shows take place around the country during the showing season, with the national competition being held in Christchurch this coming July.

‘Planktonauts’ training for Sea Cadet mission Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Sea cadets from the Top of the South are preparing for an aid mission to Fiji to collect plankton samples. Nelson Marlborough TS Talisman Sea Cadet Lieutenant, Milo Coldren, and his team of cadets have been undergoing ‘planktonaut’ training in Nelson Harbour from Cawthron Institute research scientist Dr Xavier Pochon. As trained planktonauts, they will collect plankton samples from the ocean throughout their journey across the south-west Pacific, and could even discover new species. Oceanic plankton (small drifting plants and animals) play a major role in sustaining life on our planet.

They’ve been working hard in preparation for this mission and will be fund-raising between now and July to cover the cost of their return to Nelson.” In training, the crew collected plankton using the sampling kit they will take on their mission, logged environmental data including water temperature, salinity, location, and wind speed and direction, then dried and packaged their sample.

Kate Russell Patient numbers at Nelson Hospital have more than doubled in the last 20 years, and are one of the reasons for a proposed $120m - $150m redevelopment of the premises. Recent figures released by the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board reveal that the hospital saw 123,086 patients through its doors last year, up from 90,644 patients in 2006
and 47,287 patients in 1996. The board proposes spending $1.2 million and two years planning the project, with building starting as early as 2020. It is not the only hospital in the region getting a makeover, with the $25 million expansion of Manuka St Hospital starting earlier this year. Peter Bramley, chief executive of the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, says
there are several reasons for the proposed redevelopment, including increasing demands on hospital services due to the region’s aging and growing population, the need for more hospital beds and improving the buildings’ earthquake standards. The last major work was completed in 2003 and included the new in-patient building with a 14-bed maternity unit and 30-bed medical unit.

Childcare centre celebrates 30 years Simon Bloomberg First Years Richmond has changed a lot since Hannah Thomson, Jessica Roddick, Zachary Beach, Adam Hill and Bridgette Phillips were enrolled on the childcare centre’s very first day on March 30, 1987. The centre has been extended, its roll has increased from five to 65, and there are more teachers, toys, swings, sandpits and shade sails at the Salisbury Rd pre-school. One of the centre’s former pupils, Waimea College year 10 student Lara Goulding, even reckons the
playground has shrunk in the last decade saying “it seemed so much bigger when I was here”. But First Years’ patron Elaine Hemi, who joined Lara as one of the many guests at the centre’s 30th birthday celebration last Wednesday, says the one thing hasn’t changed is its reputation for providing excellent early childhood education. Elaine says one reason for that reputation is the centre has always been run by the community and has maintained a philosophy of providing excellent and affordable childcare and education.
Interestingly, Elaine says that First Years was the first childcare centre to open in Richmond and also the first to be funded by the Ministry of Education. However, Elaine says that it may have been a case of “who you know” rather than the Ministry of Education adopting a new policy for preschools. “Kerry Marshall was the Richmond Borough mayor at the time and his brother Russell was the Minister of Education, so I think that may have had something to do with it,” Elaine says. “It was very useful for us because there
was a big demand for a childcare centre in Richmond.” Centre manager Karina Sutton says they employ 14 permanent staff who look after 37 children any one time. She says they all enjoy working at the centre which is “based on strong relationships with the families” and many of the staff have been there for more than 10 years. Allie Gutschlag is the longest serving staff member still working at the centre with 16 years of service although administrator Marion Brook worked there for 25 years before retiring in 2013.
Marion, who was a guest at the birthday celebrations, says she stayed there so long because “every day was different and I enjoyed working with the great staff and lovely children”. “It was a lovely place to work and I always felt proud and privileged to be a part of the children’s lives,” Marion says. “It gives you a lot of satisfaction seeing them grow up and I always enjoy following their progress and seeing them do well.” Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne was a guest speaker at the birthday celebrations.

Downer will also make sure the footpath is only closed on one side of the street at any time.

Just a thought... David Jensen Richmond Baptist Church Do you ever ask yourself if the road you are travelling on is the right one? Do you ever think about where it will ultimately lead to? Let’s be honest, life is so busy it’s hard to find time to think about things like this. Often life just happens around us and we get so caught up in all that’s going on, that we never really think about where is this all going? Jesus often reminded people how important it was for them to stop and think about these very important matters. Further to this, he warned us that if we just go along with the masses that we would ultimately find ourselves in deep

may think you know what’s best for your kids, you must ultimately (as they transition from childhood to adulthood) let them make their own decisions and mistakes. I know from experience that this can at times be frustrating, and I know from observation that this can sometimes be heartbreaking. And I know from the word of God, the Bible, that it breaks God’s heart that some of us would reject the life he offers us. You see God does not forcibly rescue us, he lets us choose (Acts 13:46). It’s like CS Lewis said, “There are only two kinds of people in the end, those who say to God, “Thy will be done,” and those to whom God says, in the end, “Thy will be done.” Moira Siobhan, president of the Nelson Playcentre Association, left, and Nelson midwife Vicky Chamberlayne join a group of supporters at the ‘We love midwives morning tea’ at The Broads playing field on Friday. yoghurt. Jesus solemnly warned of “a broad road that leads to destruction” and encouraged us to instead take the “narrow road that leads to life” (Matthew 7:13-14, cf Prov 14:12) Jesus said “I have come that you may have life - life to the full” (John 10:10) This statement of Jesus captures the heart of God. You see, God loves us and wants us to choose life. In fact, if you read the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) you will see God sent Jesus, the Messiah, into this world on an all-out rescue mission to save us. Now I know that some of you who are reading will be parents, and I’m sure that you know, like I know, that although you

Sport The Saxton Velodrome looks set for a mid-June completion with concrete pouring and the finishing touches to be added over the next month. The $1.6million project is a joint venture between Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and the Saxton Velodrome Trust, with the Trust expected to contribute $300,000. It was hoped the project would be completed before the end of 2016 but
that date is now June 14, 2017. Tasman District Council reserves officer Glenn Thorne says a number of areas are getting the finishing touches, with the hope the weather will stay warm enough for the final concrete pours over the next month. “There was a six to 12-month wait for the embankment to settle which has been completed and now it has come up really well. Now the work on the embankment continues as well as the drainage

being done as well as work on the learn-to-ride area and the under-pass to the inner portion of the track,” Glenn says. The main concrete pour of the track itself will be done with a special machine which will arrive from Auckland. It must work at an approximate temperature no lower than 10 degrees Celsius but the benefit will be that it can be done in one pour. In the meantime, work on the final trim and base preparation will be completed.

How many houses do you need? We have all seen the news reports about house prices in Auckland, and the massive increases in rent due to shortages of houses in Christchurch. We’ve seen a huge increase in house prices in certain parts of Tasman too. The reason for the rise in house prices is an increase in demand for them. Part of this demand increase comes from a growing population, but currently property investors make up 41% of the market. Ah, property investing! It’s the sensible thing to do with your money. A safe nest egg that generates income. So says the conventional Kiwi wisdom. Thinking purely as a financial investment, property is an attractive option. It’s something you can see and touch, unlike shares or pork belly futures (whatever they are). If prices go down you can just wait until prices go back up again. You can have tenants in your property and have them generate income. What’s not to like? There are many ways of looking at an opportunity, and there is a real human cost to the current property investment gold rush.
What’s on For more details, ring the office 544-8844
Houses are expensive, so it’s only a certain segment of the population that can afford to purchase them. This inequality gap gets worse as house prices rise. Investors are scooping up many of the ‘affordable’ houses and as demand goes up, so do the prices. This leaves people of less economic means with renting as the only option.
Lunch on the Hill
So we have wealthier people buying up all the houses and renting them out to the poorer ones. As prices rise even further, it become important to get a better return from your expensive investment. This means a rise in rents, pushing poorer people into more and more substandard housing.
St Albans, Appleby Services
Investors are driving people further into poverty as they race around buying up more and more property, casting their nets wider and wider. And they’re not some anonymous corporate fat cats —it’s people like you and me. And it raises an important question for me. There are many ways of investing your money. Just because you can afford property, does it mean you should?

Celebrating community A packed church hall recently celebrated what the hall has meant to the church community and the community. It was clear many people have passed through it’s doors. The hall, first built in 1891 has had many additions over the years. Memories from the past were shared with laughter. The main hall was packed. Soon the hall will be removed, having lasted over 100 years serving the church and the community. Today’s church and community have other needs and the new building will serve these for now and into the future.

Netball season gets underway Saturday and premier league netball is well underway and Nelson Netball is looking forward to another great season. Players kicked things off on April 2 with the annual Geraldine Hodgson pre-season club tournament, giving teams a handy opportunity to get back on the courts for competitive play before the start of the 2017 competition. Opening night for the premier grade was on Thursday, April 13, while grading took place for senior three and below on April 8, along with round one for senior one and two. April 29 marked the start of netball for senior 3 and below and when the year five and six teams take to the court this weekend, Saturday netball will be at full capacity. Nelson Netball Centre manager Lindsay Filiata says they have 164 teams involved in premier, senior, college and junior netball, with another 100 teams in the year one to six grades.
“It was good to see team numbers remain static,” says Lindsay. “In the premier competition we’re running with seven teams and the whole competition structure has changed by going to three rounds instead of two. What I’m hoping to see is more opportunities for people to move between grades, so when we get into that last round it should be a really competitive run into finals, which will be great to
see. For me, this being my first season, it’s just about getting an understanding of how netball works in Nelson and seeing everyone out there and so far, it’s looking great.” Lindsay says their umpire numbers are also looking healthy, although it’s an area Nelson Netball is looking to improve. “It’s always a challenge to get enough umpires but we’ve got a steady amount. What we need to do is build
to get some through to the next level up, we’re quite bottom heavy at the moment in terms of their qualification pathway,” says Lindsay. “The people are there to make it happen, it’s just a slower process because it takes a year or two for them to work through the qualification but there’s a fantastic support network in place this year and the clubs are stepping up and doing their umpire duties too.”
Other changes this season include two new faces in the Nelson Netball office. After working with the centre for the last three seasons, development officer Dayna Whiting has moved on to be Director of Sport at Nayland College. Filling the role will be Tracey Rayner from Auckland/Waitakere, while Shar Lowe will be joining the centre as the new umpire development officer.

Tasman aims to topple top teams www.wobrfc.co.nz
Simon Bloomberg Reporter

Sports Therapy Tasman United is “not far away” from graduating into the top tier of the Mainland Women’s Premier League, despite losing to Coastal Spirit 4-1 at Saxton Field on Sunday. Tasman United is presently fourth in the league on nine points after winning three of its six games. It has suffered two losses to secondplaced Coastal Spirit and one to league leaders Cashmere Technical but team manager James McPhie considers they are closing the gap on the top two teams. “We are not far away from these teams,” James says. “We just need to concentrate for the full 90 minutes and we’ll be very competitive. “We are a young team playing against bigger, more experienced sides but I’m certain we can beat them. “If we can do it once, then I think we’ll break through that barrier and the girls will gain the confi-
dence they need.” James says the fact that Tasman matched Coastal Spirit in the first half of Sunday’s game indicates that they are good enough to compete against the top teams. The score was 1-1 at half time after Matilda Dawson equalised for Tasman in the 29th minute before they lost their way in the second half. “We were playing it wide in the first half and it was working well but then we started trying to go through the middle in the second half and that played to their strength. We had a couple of chances in the second half but weren’t clinical enough in front of goal.” Tasman has a bye this weekend before playing FC Twenty 11 and Universities in a double-header in Christchurch the following weekend. Tasman is one point behind third-placed FC Twenty 11, which has played one more game, while Universities are last on three points after one win from six games.

Fast and furious racing at VMX event in Tadmor Pete Guthrie won the Veteran’s Class and Ray Anderson Memorial Trophy at the Top of the South VMX Club’s annual Morley Motorcycle and Marine club championships at Tadmor on Sunday. The Ray Anderson Memorial was contested by the veteran class riders this year and Pete, who had known Ray since he was a teenager, was determined to get his name on the trophy. And he did it in style, winning all three races to win the trophy for the third time. The Junior Class was a battle between Kruger Griffith and Ryan Furness who traded places all day. However, Ryan crashed in race two before climbing back to third to give Kruger an eight point win over Ryan with Kent Furness riding well to finish third. Malcolm Furness had a good day winning the Small-Bore and Mid-Bore classes with Brett Hahn second and Brad Richards third in MidBore. The club raised $250 for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter with a fundraising barbecue and donations. VMC Club’s Rob Anglesey says over 40 signed up for the champs and more turning up on the day. Rob says racing was held on a new track and “all the riders had a great day”. The club’s next event is round one of the Mainland Series on May 28 at Lake Station near St Arnaud.

Waimea Old Boys RFC
www.wobrfc.co.nz
Waimea facing tough forward battle Waimea Old Boys is expecting another close contest when they play Waitohi in their NPD Tasman Trophy division one rugby clash at Endeavour Park in Picton on Saturday. Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys scored eight tries in their 48-35 win against Central in last week’s game at Lansdowne Park
in Blenheim. WOB had to come back from a 28-22 deficit at half-time to edge out Central and coach Mark Milne says Waitohi will be even harder to roll. “Waitohi might be our biggest challenge to date,” Mark says. “They are very rugged up front and have a big ball carrying cen-
tre and a number 10 who does a good job of running the play. “Their set pieces are also very good. It’s going to be a real test for us, especially our young guys.” Mark says the key to beating Waitohi will be playing the game at pace and “moving the ball around”.
He says they have the speed and skill to execute that game plan as long as they have suitable weather and ground conditions. Mark is also confident that his team is playing well enough to match Waitohi. “We have a heap of young guys and probably lack a bit of experience but they are all going really
well. “I think we have five players straight out of school and it’s a big step up in physicality for them but they are fit and fast and handling it well.” Waimea Old Boys are presently third in the NPD Tasman Trophy on 29 points, just four behind leaders Nelson.

Mike Pero Nelson Giant Finn Delany in action earlier this month. Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport.
Finn finds rhythm with less minutes It is no surprise that the Nelson Giants resurgence in the NBL has coincided with the return to form of Finn Delany. After a breakout season with the New Zealand Breakers in the Australian NBL, Finn was surprisingly quiet at the start of the season. The former Nelson College pupil played plenty of minutes and even whole games under former coach Alan McAughtry, but his production was way down. Finn was playing 36 minutes on average under Alan, a stat which led many to believe he was being overworked and his performance was suffering as a result. Now, with increased rest, he is being more productive and the Mike Pero Nelson Giants are reaping the rewards. Last week against the Taranaki Mountainairs he played 27 minutes and scored 19 points, nine rebounds and two assists.
Add to that the 30 points he scored in a losing effort against the Wellington Saints and it’s a far cry from what we were seeing. Finn says the change in attitude has been subtle, like most of the changes. “We just felt we were one of the youngest teams in the league so we have to start playing more upbeat. “You look at all the changes and it’s easy to say they have a lot to do with it all, but really it’s just been little changes, working hard, and most of all, enjoying our basketball.” Finn says the team always had selfbelief but feels they now have the mix right to be more than competitive with any team. “We’ve certainly looked at the way we started and changed things, but we’ve also kept some stuff that we were doing at the start of the year so it’s all a combination of things that are working for us at the moment.”

Richmond watermain replacements
We are about to conduct our annual survey of residents to find out how you think we are performing. We have commissioned National Research Bureau (NRB) to carry out the telephone survey. NRB uses a randomised selection method to choose survey respondents. The survey is totally confidential. The residents’ survey allows us to track our performance and hear the community’s views about what we do well and where we can improve. If you are contacted by NRB, we would love it if you would take the time to be involved – your input is important to let us know how we can best serve our community.
Over the next seven months, new water pipes will be installed in D’arcy Street, Fauchelle Ave, Florence Street, Elizabeth Street and Herbert Street in RichmondThe existing pipes in these streets have reached an age where they are showing signs of deterioration and need to be replaced to avoid disruption to residents’ water supply. At the same time, we will replace ageing water meters on these streets. At times during the works, access to the footpath and some car parks will be affected. Please avoid the coned off areas and follow signage and instructions. Traffic will be restricted to one lane for short periods of time throughout construction. Your patience is appreciated.
Updated rating information available The 2017– 2018 Rating Information Database for Tasman District is now available at Tasman District Council service centres and online. The database contains a record of all information we use to set and assess rates, but does not include any subdivisions/ boundary adjustments/amalgamations completed after 3 May 2017. The names of property owners and ratepayers are not listed in the database. Search for rates information online Visit www.tasman.govt.nz/link/rates-search to access the database and check a property’s rates. You will need to enter the property street address to view the current year’s rating information. Click on “Next Year– 2017/18” to view the estimated rates for 2017– 2018 rating year.
Proposed speed limit change for Queen Street & Sundial Square, Richmond We are proposing to reduce the speed limit on Queen Street, Richmond to 30km/hr. The current speed limit on Queen Street from Gladstone Road to Salisbury Road, is 50km/hr. The proposed reduction in speed limit will also include Sundial Square (from Queen Street to McGlashen Avenue). There are several reasons for this proposed reduction in speed: • The new road profile is designed for a lower speed environment • The new road design has a narrower carriageway (reduced from approximately 9.5m to 6.0m) • The new footpaths will be wider and make the area more pedestrian friendly • There will be no raised speed humps (due to stormwater flow requirements) Make a submission: Either complete the form online at www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback or fill in a form at any Council service centre and leave there or send via email to robyn.scherer@tasman.govt.nz. The consultation period closes at 5.00 pm on Friday 19 May 2017. For further information, contact us on 03 543 8400.
Subsidised neutering for menacing dogs We’re working with the Nelson SPCA to deliver subsidised neutering and microchipping for menacing dogs. The subsidy is funded by the Department of Internal Affairs. Eligible dogs will be neutered and microchipped at a nominated vet clinic for $25. Dog owners who wish to take advantage of this offer should contact the Nelson SPCA on (03) 5477171 to confirm whether your dog is eligible.

Use Good Wood for winter burning
• Phone 03 543 8400
Look for the Good Wood tick when you stock up on winter firewood to be sure of dry firewood that will burn cleanly. Suppliers in the Good Wood scheme can be trusted to provide either:
• Fax 03 543 9524
• Seasoned firewood, suitable for immediate use during the winter months, or • Green (unseasoned) firewood delivered far enough in advance, that if properly stored by the user, it will be ready to burn in winter. Remember, green wood will not burn efficiently, leaving you with a cold house and smoky fire. A Good Wood supplier will have a moisture meter to measure the moisture content of wood if you wish to confirm that wood being delivered is dry enough to use. Find a Good Wood supplier: Head to www.tasman.govt.nz/link/good-wood for a list of Good Wood suppliers.
