A new plan tackles teen drinking Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
A new initiative from the District Health Board is taking a different approach to tackling teen drinking. “Youth drinking is not a new problem. We live in a culture where alcohol use is normal, and the associated risks often go unnoticed,” says Hilary Genet, health promoter at the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. While schools have resources to work with teens and get them educated, ‘The plan’ is about educating parents. The Public Health Service, along with the health action trust, have been working on the new resource for over two years. “We worked a lot with local parents and recognising that we have an environment that is awash with alcohol,” said Hilary. “The idea here is to delay the age that their teens are starting to drink.” Carol Mcintosh, from Alcohol Health Promotion, says the
problem is a cultural one. “Because alcohol is legally available most people don’t think of it as a drug, nor do they understand all the associated risks, since alcohol is not treated like other drugs by our society.” An increasing body of evidence points to the need to encourage and support young people to delay drinking alcohol until they are older. Risks associated with early onset drinking include reduced ability to learn and retain new information, injury and mental health issues as teenagers and longer-term problems, including an increased likelihood of addiction, later in life. Risks are significantly increased if under 18’s drink heavily. “It is also important to delay the escalation of drinking once it has begun.” Parents are the most common suppliers of alcohol to under 18-year olds. “A lot of parents told us that they are pressured by their teens to provide alcohol, and

A new plan tackles drinking FROM PAGE 1 we know from research that parents are influential in creating their child’s drinking patterns.” One of the main ideas was to create family plans and help support parents. This is where the project ‘The Plan’ came from. “The idea is really about getting parents to share their experiences and giving them access to tools that can help them have those conversations with their kids.” Waimea College is one school that is being proactive in engaging and supporting parents navigate their teen’s drinking, which recently held a parent’s evening to share ‘The Plan’ and other resources. “Recently Waimea asked us to provide this for the parents –
parents need to know what we’re delivering to the kids. It’s an important part of the curriculum -if parents know what is being taught, they can help develop those attitudes at home,” Carol says. Scott Haines, Waimea College Principal, says that it’s key that the school works with parents. “It takes a village, and we need to be engaged with parents about what we are teaching.” The Public Health Service will be using ‘The Plan’ to help facilitate a discussion and providing parents with tips and tools of how to manage teen parties and have a plan. “It’s important to make sure that what kids learn at school about alcohol is mirrored at home.” Parents can access the resource at www.the-plan.nz

The Waimea Inlet will be covered with 70,000 new native trees over the next 3 years. On Wednesday last week, Forestry Minister Shane Jones along with Tasman/West Coast MP and Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor, announced more than $1 million to help support the restoration of the Waimea Inlet. The investment into the Estuary comes from the Government’s $240million One Billion Trees programme. The funding announcement was made at Hoddy Estuary Park in Tasman, as the ministers planted a tree each to formally begin the project. “This is a significant opportunity that will see more than 70,000 native trees planted across the estuary over the next three years,” Shane Jones said. Shane Jones said that native trees play an important part of the government’s One Billion Trees strategy. The grants programme launched last year targets twothirds native trees because of

Bay Dreams back next year Bay dreams was a hit earlier this year. Photo: Kate Russell.

The Nelson Tasman region looks to be becoming one of the up and coming go-to destinations for international music, thanks to new negotiations to get the hugely popular ‘Bay Dreams’ festival back in the area for the next five years.
The festival, which began in Tauranga, expanded by adding a second location in January this year. More than 20,000 travelled to Trafalgar park to attend a starstudded lineup, including Tash Sultana, Shapeshifter, and Cardi B. The festival is now confirmed for 2020. The region also saw the spotlight in March with Canadian singer-
songwriter Bryan Adams wowing crowds at Trafalgar Park, and UB40 performing earlier in the year. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says Council is enthusiastic about the prospect of Bay Dreams South becoming a regular fixture for the area, following last summer’s very successful event. Rachel says this year’s festival was a huge success for the Nelson and
Tasman region, bringing 20,000 young people to the area, many of whom were visiting the region for the first time. Festival director Toby Burrows says that returning the festival to Nelson makes perfect sense. “It was such a popular event last time, selling out in a few weeks. It was a no brainer to look to return the event to Nelson regularly,” Burrows says.
Toby said that the Nelson Tasman region is a great holiday destination and having the event at the Trafalgar Centre and Trafalgar Park venues, so close to the city centre and with the stunning sea views, make for an epic setting to host a large-scale music festival of this nature. Work has already begun for organising the festival, and a set line- up is expected later in July.

Push for more diversity in council Matt McCrorie Minister for Women, Julie Ann Genter, was in Nelson last week, pushing for more women to get involved in council with local body elections coming up. Currently, 21 per cent of elected councillors on the Tasman District Council are women. The figures aren’t much better in Nelson, where a total of 23 per cent of representatives are women. Nationally, the average isn’t much different. Figures from the Department of Internal affairs show that women make up less than a third of councillors and mayors throughout the country. Judene Edgar, who was on the Tasman District Council from 2007-2016, said that its not just about ticking a box. “You don’t have diversity to tick a box, its about bringing different perspectives.” “When I first stood for council, I was under 40 – I was so young in comparison to the average age. The first local government conference I went to, people kept mistaking me for a staff member because of my age.” Judene says that a big barrier for young women is to do with pay and time commitment. “A lot of young people don’t have
the jobs that allow them the flexibility to be on council.” “When I first stood a had a preschooler and a primary schoolaged child, it was expensive, especially for childcare. And I think that’s a barrier for young women.” Judene’s motivation for standing
Judene Edgar came from not seeing anyone like her in council. “I looked around at council and went, ‘there’s no young people with families, understanding the pressure of mortgages, kids, childcare’, and you need people who understand that broad cross- section of the community.” Even having urban and rural diversity is important in the same way, Judene says. Dana Wensley, one of the current Richmond ward council-
lors agrees that having a range of voices on council is important. “What we do in local government affects everyone, and everybody brings their own experience – whoever you are, you are bringing a body of experience and different voices along with you.” Dana says that its important to have people around the table who look like the community that they’re representing. “We need to represent the people, that’s what democracy is. There are times when I feel we, as a council, get it right, but there are other times times that I feel there are voices that are missing from the council table.” Being a woman on the council makes for a different experience, too, Dana says. “I find that people tend to feel like they can approach me a lot more, often in the supermarket. I think women are seen as that softer side of council – which is great for me because it means I’m hearing the community in a different way. “It’s too hard for one person to represent everyone, and we need to be exposed to different points of view. Whether that’s women, young women, people from all different backgrounds.”
Rainbow Ski Field now open The ski field opened for the year on June 28th, and Rainbow Ski General Manager James Lazor is urging people to please check the Rainbow Ski website or visit the Rainbow Ski Area page on Facebook for daily updates (at around 6am – 6.15am) before heading up there. “We want to make sure people understand what the conditions are.” The ski field was opened on the last weekend of June, as scheduled. “It’s one of the earliest times we’ve ever opened thanks to our new snow-making system. Our operations have worked hard to make what snow we have. We’ve had no ‘natural’ snow on the mountain which is no different to anyone in the industry right now and is due to the warm weather conditions.” This
past week things also took bit of a hit because of the rain, so the Rainbow team have initially just opened the beginners and intermediate area. “Our goal has been to get it open for the school holidays which is what we did last year. It’s part of the reason why we started early with the snow secure plan.”
Accident in Lee Valley A crash in the Lee Valley on Friday, 5 July saw a man receive serious injuries. At 8:25 police were called to Creek Road in Lee Valley following a report of a vehicle going off the road and down the hill. “One man was airlifted from the scene in a serious condition” a police spokesperson said. The man was taken to Nelson Hospital where he was reported to be in a serious condition.

Red rebels protest for climate emergency The message was hard to ignore as dozens of Extinction Rebellion members invaded council last week dressed head to toe in red to represent our dying planet. The group crashed a public meeting at Tasman District Council on Thursday, 4 June in the afternoon, demanding a climate emergency be declared. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne adjourned the meeting to allow the group’s spokesperson to outline their demands. “We have got three goals, to get governments to tell the truth, to have zero emissions by 2025 and we want a participatory democracy,” Katrin Millener says. Katrin told council the silent protesters wore red to represent spirits rising up from the grave, indicating what is being done to the earth. Katrin said that the protest was meant to echo those done previously across the world, including in London. “It is to evoke grief and sadness.”
She says everybody has to take responsibility for past actions. “We need to see where we have gone wrong and how we can do better.” Katrin says the primary reason they are here to remind everybody to stay truthful. The group also successfully campaigned for Nelson City Council to declare a climate emergency in May. Richard thanked the rebellion for their time before resuming council’s meeting. Nelson City Council, along with others like Christchurch, Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin City councils have all declared climate emergencies in the last several months. So far over 500 councils worldwide have made the declaration. Currently, the Tasman District Council has not declared a climate emergency. Richard Kempthorne says that while the council is taking climate change seriously, there is no current need to declare a climate emergency.

Ceremony celebrates agricultural pioneer A Richmond pioneer was recognised over the weekend. A tree-planting ceremony in Richmond last Sunday aimed to recognise an early settler who began agricultural shows in the region over 150 years ago, which led to the A&P show at the Richmond Showgrounds. Francis Otterson, who arrived in Nelson with his wife Jane in 1842 with their infant daughter Alice, soon became a prominent community leader. He developed the 200 acre block of which the showgrounds are now part into a viable farm, and he founded the Richmond Cattle Fair Association, the forerunner of the Nelson A&P Association. He was elected, along with John Barnicoat, to represent Waimea East in the newly-created Nelson Provincial Council in 1854. He died later that year while attempting to cross the Wairau River. His funeral was, at the time, the largest ever held in the settlement with over 100 horsemen riding four abreast accompanying the coffin carried by his farm workers. Before his death he planted a grove of Tasmanian Blue gums that he carried as seedlings from Nelson Haven.
David Brown, second from the right, is one of the descendants of Francis Otterson and helped plant the memorial tree. Photo: Supplied. Only a stump of the last tree from that grove, once listed in” Historic Trees of New Zealand” remains. It can be seen outside the Nelson Croquet Club next to the Showgrounds in Lower Queen St. David Brown, great-grandson of the Ottesons, recently donated a
tree to commemorate the work of his pioneering ancestor. Along with other family members and members of the A&P Association, David planted three Golden Elms on Sunday, July 7 in an area of the park that has now been renamed the ‘Otterson
Woodland.’ “We are very grateful that Francis’ pivotal role in establishing the show is being acknowledged,” said David. Ted Ford, president of the A&P Association, said that the association is delighted to be able to

Helping grow the country
House prices in the Tasman region are still on the up despite the national trend flattening out, new figures show. Figures released by QV show that house prices across the Tasman district have continued to rise, and are now up 5.9% year on year and 2.1% over the past three months. The average value in the Tasman district is now $611,397. Meanwhile, Nelson residential property values rose 7.1% in the year to June and by 1.2% over the past quarter. The average value in the city is now $624,307. QV Nelson senior consultant, Craig Russell, said market activity has been more subdued in recent weeks, as buyers benefit from fewer multi-offer situations. “Owner/occupiers tend to be more active than investors, as increased compliance costs and lower yields make residential investment less attractive.” Low interest rates may also be a factor, Craig says. “Today’s low interest rates, that are tipped to fall further, may give the market some impetus over spring.” He also said that there were now well-maintained and

Carolyn Ferraby, founding member of Garden Marlborough, will be visiting Richmond to give a talk on gardening. Photo: Supplied.
Renowned gardener to visit Heritage Roses Nelson is hosting Carolyn Ferraby, a founding member of Garden Marlborough, at their July meeting in Richmond. Barewood, Carolyn and Joe Ferraby’s renowned garden of International Significance in the Awatere Valley did indeed start off bare. 40
years ago when Carolyn, as a young bride, was advised to start a garden by her mother -in-law, the ground was solid clay. Many years of hard graft, hauling in rotted wood shavings, sheep manure, lime and gypsum has resulted in a serene country garden enhanced by trees,
sloping lawns and a painterly palette of colour and texture. Carolyn, trained as a florist, has an eye for colour and form. The talk is on Tuesday July 23rd at 5.30 pm at Richmond Library. With a $2.00 entry for non Heritage Rose members.

John has been cleaning tanks for the past two years and recommends domestic tanks are cleaned every two years to maintain healthy drinking water. He has cleaned out sludge from the bottom of tanks, sometimes half a metre deep, and it’s very common to remove dead birds, rodents,
pollen and tree debris from the families drinking water tanks. His equipment is set up on a FWD ute and small truck, so access is not an issue. John specialises in cleaning Domestic and commercial Tanks, ponds, pools farm troughs, anywhere in the top of the south including baches in the Marlborough Sounds. Contact John on 0212 450 550.

Just a thought... Sage Harris Whakatu Presbytarian I find isolation an incredibly scary possibility. This is coming from an introvert. But isolation is a very real part of many people’s lives in our communities, from the elderly who are on their own, unable to go out for whatever reason, to our young who have the world at their fingertips only to feel isolated because of the giant beast that is social media. Most of us at some point feel isolated, because of ourselves, because of others, because of circumstances outside of our control. In our nation we consider ourselves to have two degrees of separation, everyone knows everyone. But in reality we are a nation who have struggled deeply with this lack of connection and for many this is only getting worse. With the use of texting and emails, we no longer require having face-to-face connection
because we can communicate through other means. And although that has created some positives it has meant we are lacking that human connection that each of us is created to have. Humans are social beings, we are made to be with one another. God says in the Bible that it is not good for humans to be alone, and it’s not. God, who is relational, never intended for us to be so isolated from one another. In a time where the world is calling us to become more and more independent from one another, my words of encouragement to you is to push against that. Go and get involved in someway in our community, whether through a sports club, church, community events, or just having a yarn with your neighbours. Check in with people and be available. We were never created to be lonely or isolated, we were created to be a community. God Bless.

Waimea hosts Kahui Ako cultural festival Waime College was host to the inaugural Kāhui Ako Cultural Festivel. The new festival took place on 28 June, with 11 schools from around the region coming together to participate in the new event. The idea behind the new cultural festival was to share and celebrate learning. It was not a competition, but rather a chance for students to inspire and be inspired by others in the community. The event took place in the Waimea College hall, with Waimea intermediate, Garin College, Saint Paul’s and a range of other schools travelling to join. Across School teachers Sarah Rankin and Tania Alessana worked together to help organise the event. Schools interacted through various different activities, including an inter school Kapa Haka performance. Students were heavily involved, with the Garin College and Waimea College Culture Captains working together across schools to co-ordinate and run the event.

Richmond’s McIlroy shows his class again Staff Reporter Our bowls world champion, Shannon McIlroy, just keeps piling on the accolades. The 32-year-old Richmond local completed a perfect campaign at the Asia Pacific Championships on the Gold Coast, a fortnight ago. Shannon won the men’s singles title, six days after winning the men’s pairs with Gary Lawson, to
secure the Blackjacks’ fourth gold from eight events. “Not often you go through any event undefeated, let alone an international event.” “There were some amazing players there,” he said. “It just goes to show me the work you put in, not just off the green but on the green as well, it can go a long way to having…success.” Shannon’s 20th and final successive win was the hardest to come
by. The world champion had to come from 10-0 down to beat Canada’s Ryan Bester 21-20 in a thrilling men’s singles final. “Experience tells me you just need to extend games and then see what happens,” McIlroy said. “Credit to Ryan, the first sort of seven to eight ends he was unbelievable, so you’ve just got to tip your hat and say ‘too good’ sometimes.
“I was pretty happy with that second-half performance.” With two golds and two silvers, the Blackjacks also secured the overall men’s title, ahead of Australia. Shannon believes they have sent a strong message to their rivals, less than a year out from the world championships next year. He will travel again for the championships, which will also be played on the Gold Coast.
“Us making finals and winning a lot of them goes a long way to just planting a seed of doubt for our opposition players that we come up against at world championships, Shannon said. “If you can walk on the green and you’ve half beaten them mentally, then that’s half the job done.” “For us, it was vitally important to go out there and do as best as we could and send a statement to everyone.”
For that confident, healthy smile and advice you can trust see Nelson’s only orthodontists. Delivering smiles of confidence for Nelsonians for over 20 years.

Nelson Matters
Everyone is affected by cancer. Someone is diagnosed with cancer on average every day and someone dies from cancer every second day in our Nelson/Tasman region. Amazing progress has been made with new and better treatments but much more needs to be done in saving lives from this cruel disease. Many Nelsonians have signed Blair Vinings 130,000 strong petition to Parliament seeking a National Cancer Agency and better and more consistent care for cancer sufferers. Blair, a 38 year old Southland farmer, supported by his wife and two young daughters, is battling terminal bowel cancer. He says he has been let down by
the health system with delayed appointments and denial of medicine available elsewhere. It is incredibly brave of the Vining family, with limited time left together, to be leading this debate. Parliament needs to take heed of their message. It is not good enough that New Zealand’s cancer care is substandard to Australia. We would save 650 kiwi lives a year, or 13 a year in Nelson and Tasman, if we had the same access to the same drugs and timelines of treatments as across the Tasman. The Government is failing to live up to its promises on cancer care. Labour promised a new $20 million fund for new drugs but has
not delivered. They also promised a National Cancer Agency but the Prime Minister has now back pedalled saying its assessing other options. I also take issue with the Labour Government’s decision to cancel the requirement for District Health Boards to measure and report on cancer treatment. National’s Faster Cancer Treatment targets required patients to see a specialist for diagnosis within two weeks of referral from a GP and that their treatment begin within 62 days. The debate about new cancer drugs does need to be handled with care. Pharmaceutical companies can overstate the benefits of their new
544 Waimea Road, Nelson
drugs and exploit the vulnerability of cancer patients. We need to increase the budget for medications but back our medical professionals in their judgements about which drugs will give the most benefit. The battle against cancer is not just for the parliament to debate. We can all make lifestyle decisions to reduce the risks. Smoking remains the worst contributor and we must help persuade our family, friends and work colleagues to give up. This one change would reduce cancer deaths by a third. We can also save lives by supporting screening programmes for breast, prostate, cervical and bowel cancer. Early detection means
treatment is much more likely to be successful. The National Government approved the nationwide Bowel Screening programme in 2016 that is currently being rolled out in Nelson. We must support our District Health Board in implementing this life saving programme by positively responding to the postal request for samples. It is not pleasant but necessary. I pay tribute to our oncologists, doctors, nurses and the Cancer Society for all the support they give Nelsonians and their families in treating and caring for those with cancer. We must do more to support their work in saving lives. Advt.

Hope tennis trio recognised Jacob Page A trio of Hope tennis players have turned a friendship on and off the court into life memberships. Ted Eden, Marion McIntosh and Anne Dowell all received the honour at a ceremony last week, having contributed more than 150 years of combined service. The club has been going since it had two initial courts on the main road of Hope. They moved to the Hope Domain in 1957 and the members built four concrete courts. Eden, who is 93, can still remember spraying the site for weeds. “The courts were levelled with railways irons towed by tractors,” he says. The asphalt and painted lines were also done by Ted
and his fellow club members. A pavilion soon followed and two more courts were added in 1986. In 2001, AstroTurf was introduced to the courts and lights were added three years late, and nowadays the club boasts 10 courts. Ted has been involved in the club for 70 years. “During the (second) World War I built my own tennis court in my backyard. I played rugby at Jubilee Park in the winter and tennis in the summer.” Ted last played competitively 10 years ago but said he was extremely proud to receive the honour. Marion says it was a thrill to receive the life membership alongside two people she considered good friends. “I was very, very surprised,”
she says. “I had no idea. “Ted and I go back 40 years and we both played A grade. We had lots of wins together so it was great to be there with him.” She says she feels others are more deserving than her. “I’m just a doer, I like to get things done. I’ve been at the club for 38 years and my three children have all played at the club. I’ve had some good wins with Anne, she and I played all over New Zealand. We’ve won tournaments together in Wanganui and Dunedin and Ted and I had wins over people we shouldn’t have beaten but we’re both very calm, controlled people on the court. I was lucky to have great friends as partners.” Anne Dowell has been a member since the early 1980s. She started playing
mid-week ladies and progressed to Saturday competitions. As she got older, Anne played in many veterans’ tournaments around the South Island, as well as joining several tennis tours to Australia. During her time with the club she held many positions on the committee. She has always been a loyal and passionate member of the Hope Club and a strong advocate for strengthening the participation of tennis at the club. Anne was still playing last November until poor health forced her to step away from the game. Club patron Elaine Llewellyn says all three have been integral members of the club and deserved to be recognised for all their contributions. Marion McIntosh proudly displays her Life Membership certificate presented by the Hope Tennis Club. Ted Eden and Anne Dowell were likewise recognised for their outstanding service. Photo: Supplied

Wanderers Sports Club Report Wanderers Div 2 run rampant against Huia Taylors Wanderers won a vital division two encounter with Huia New World 59-17 on Saturday. The result will likely decide home advantage for the upcoming semi-final in the tight Division two championship. Huia showed their intent from the kick off, controlling the ball and scoring a very good try in the opening minute, however Steve Leef ’s charges settled down and produced 39 minutes of controlled rugby, resulting in six excellent tries, all converted by Bobby Palmer who directed and varied play astutely, for a very handy 42-5 lead at the halftime break. A feature of the half had been the forward pack performance which supplied good quality ball to half back Todd Peattie, who in turn distributed it to an engaged backline, where wingers Jack Pool and Ethan Johnston were full of running. Both chased kicks well and made telling tackles behind the advantage line, enabling continual forward momentum for the team. There is a saying in rugby that the forward pack decides the winner, and the backline decide the points difference, and this game certainly proved that adage with six of the nine tries scored by the backs, even if the intensity did wilt in the second half. Huia fought back well in the second spell, with that period resulting in a 17-12 scoreline again in favour of the hosts. Tries were scored by Sean King, Todd Peattie, Jack Pool, Ethan Johnston, Ducati Morrell-Hopa, Jaden Roeske and Palmer scored two and landed seven conversions.
Bobby Palmer on the run with Jaden Roeske backing him up. Bobby Palmer successful in kicking 7 of his 9 attempts. Ref for the match was Reece Weir. Taylors Wanderers will be concerned with the drop off in the second half as they head towards more difficult games. They are still to play the unbeaten Stoke before the semi-final. Next week will see the team travel to Jubilee Park to play Waimea Old Boys in what promises to be another challenge for the club. The main game at Centennial Park on Saturday was the final round robin game of the women’s competition which was really not going to be detrimental to placings for the semi-finals this week, as all four top teams had basically cemented their spot. Three of the five teams in the women’s competition weren’t taking the field this week due to a scheduled bye for one team and a default between the other two. This left Taylors Wanderers and Awatere as the only senior women’s game of the day. Awatere have struggled all season for numbers and again
turned up with just 11 players, therefore development of the women’s game became the key factor in this case and with a scramble around other clubs to bolster their numbers producing only one other player, Wanderers met the challenge by lending players and making their bench available to both sides. Score ‘Blow outs’ are a focus and after gauging strengths and weaknesses in both sides, coaches Ian Biggs and Wayne Bateman allocated players to each side to even the game and make the process more enjoyable and educational for all. An enjoyable game eventuated which saw great performances from all players on both sides and strengthened the relationship between the two clubs and enhanced the respect both sides have for each other. Individual performances from Wanderers players saw Player of the Day points being gained
from Shakia-Lee Biggs (3), Tamara Silcock (2), Jo Saleil & Georgia Hay (1 each) who were all rewarded with gifts from the Wanderers women’s team sponsor 3 Bee for their efforts. The Taylors Wanderers Senior women will now travel to Blenheim to meet Moutere on Saturday at 1:15pm at Lansdowne Park in the semi-final. Meanwhile, the Taylors Wanderers Division one team travelled to Motueka on Saturday to play Kahurangi in the final game of that competition before the semi-finals next week. Having already qualified in third position, Wanderers were hoping to have a good hit-out before the knockout match next week, however Kahurangi were playing their final game for the season and were determined to finish on a high. In an extremely tight arm wrestle of a match, Kahurangi eventually prevailed 15-12 based on superbly committed defence, and assisted by some poor finishing by Wanderers despite making numerous line breaks.
Each time the Kahurangi defence was breached, teammates scrambled back to pressure the Wanderers ball carriers, or to isolate support runners, in a display of resilience that deserved the final result. Glenn Grant, the Wanderers coach, while disappointed in the poor finishing rate of promising moves, was pleased with the continuing development of Nino Peniamina, who has shown great improvement through the season and looks a threat both with the ball and in defence. He was justifiably selected Player of the Day for Wanderers with mention also to Josh Post and Sione Havili-Talitui for their tenacity. Tries were scored by Josh Grant and Naki Saumaki ,with a conversion from Justin Barr. However, like the New Zealand cricket team, going into semifinals on the back of a loss is not ideal. They will play number one rivals Waimea Old Boys at Jubilee Park, which should ensure focus. During the recent loss to WOB at Centennial Park, there were enough signs by the team to encourage supporters to look forward to the next encounter positively. Of course, Waimea supporters will be of a similar view and an epic match could be provided. Kick off will be at 3pm. The Volunteer of the Week, sponsored by Southfuels SpringGrove, was won by Diane Drogemuller and the Sponsor of the Week is Reeds Contracting. The Wanderers Helicharter sponsored raffle has been extended by a further week and will now be drawn on Saturday.
