The Tasman Bay Food Co. are finding it difficult to move the mountain of steel drums created as part of their business of making Juicies ice blocks. Managing director Marina Tristam says as a company they work hard to reduce their waste but it’s not proving easy to find avenues for the repurposing of the steel drums. “At the end of the day we want to see things being recycled not going into landfill,” she says. The company buy fruit concentrate in 200-litre steel drums at their Brightwater location, but as their business has grown. so has the quantity of the drums. “I’m sure there are people or businesses in this region who could make use of them,” says Marina. She has tried offering the drums to scrap metal yards but the cost to collect them outweighs the worth of the drums to them. “It’s only worth it to us if people can dump it at the gate,” says Nelson Metal Industries owner, Denise Smith. She says the steel market has crashed, especially since the involvement of China who started in the scrap metal industry

around 10 years ago. According to Denise, China are masters at working the market. Knowing how to increase and shrink the cost to their own advantage. “Prices can drop by $200 a tonne overnight,” says Denise. Being in Nelson means paying $3500 a time to get it shipped across to the North Island. The Tasman Bay Food Co. have had some people collect drums for the use of horse jumps, collecting water or placing around new trees in lifestyles blocks. While others have used them for storage, buying 20 at a time. To date, Marina has been using Facebook’s Marketplace to let people know of the drums which are, in the most part, in pristine condition having only been used once for the concentrate. Tasman Bay Food Co. press apples which then get blended with the concentrates that come loaded in the drums, to create the different flavours of the ice blocks. A product like boysenberries that are only a once-a-year harvest are made into concentrates so that the ice blocks are available all year round. If you would like a steel drum, or have an idea on repurposing them, please contact Marina at info@tasmanbay.co.nz.

School bus crashes Covid cancellations touch many near Murchison Jenny Nicholson
Jenny Nicholson
Rescue services were called to a bus crash near Murchison at 4.20 pm on Monday. The school bus, thought to be carrying eight students, crashed into a ditch on State Highway 65 between Maruia Saddle Road and Pea Soup Road. The bus landed on its side and while initial reports said three pupils were seriously injured later reports indicated three were airlifted to Nelson Hospital but with moderate injuries. “I am very glad to say that it would appear at present there have been no serious injuries to any of the students or driver,” said Murchison Area School Principal Andy Ashcroft on Monday night. He was still communicating with parents Tuesday morning but believed the students were “OK
to a degree and no worse than Monday night’s report.” He had spoken to the driver at Murchison hospital on Monday night. “He’s not physically injured, but is shaken and disturbed,” says Andy. Police had been attending another call nearby and were at the accident site within five minutes. The Murchison ambulance was there in about 20 to 25 minutes. It is activities week for the whole school with events on and off site. These activities are going ahead and additional staff are available for anyone needing support or counselling. “It was a busy night on the phone passing information to the community and staff. We have been well supported from the ministry with offers of help if required.
We were back to level one on Sunday but looking back over the week before, Covid cancellations touched many lives. From churches waking to cancelled or limited number services, to seniors’ activities being changed, sport being cancelled, activities postponed, and school events changed, there was an element of disappointment for many. Pretty Crafty Market organiser Karen Cooper struggled with the dilemma of to cancel or not. “All the fear of here we go again and what if and knowing that many elderly come to our event

nail in the coffin for the event. She is hoping that it will become a monthly occurance. She also helps organise the Pretty Smart Sale and was pleased a large venue meant that it could go ahead. Youth from Richmond New Life Church were pleased to be back to level one so they could hold their fundraiser barbeque. Along with hundreds of other teenagers in the region they are heading to Easter Camp and were raising money to cover costs. Another event that was postponed was the Children’s Family Fun Day at the Aquatic Centre which will now be held on Sunday 28 March.

Skilled workers in short supply Jacqui Rawson Skilled construction workers are a sought-after commodity in a sector seeing huge activity with expectations for continued growth. Daniel Platts and Troy Routledge have taken up the chance to gain skills as part of the government initiative to provide free trades training and employer support in the construction sector. “I was contemplating getting back into an apprenticeship and it was the free training that made me decide to go ahead,” says Daniel. He says taking on an apprentice means the employers don’t have to take as much of a risk as if they took on someone who was completely green. “It’s a great idea from this government although it’s been a long time coming,” says Mudgway Construction owner, Jason Mudgway. “In the last 12 months there has been a 63 per cent increase in the number of apprentices into the building sector,” says Building Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) Chief Executive, Toby Beaglehole. That’s 430 apprentices in training of whom 230 are carpenters and the rest, painters and decorators and other specialist trades within the Nelson Tasman region.

A further $412 million has been invested in the Apprenticeship Boost initiative which supports employers to retain apprentices and to hire and train more people. The apprenticeship fees covered by the Targeted Training and Apprenticeship Fund (TTAF) is set to finish on the 31st December 2022.

Women helping women Jenny Nicholson Nic Russ doesn’t like dresses or make-up, but she realised she loves working with buses and other large vehicles. After losing her job in tourism, she has chosen to retrain as an automotive engineer and has been helped along with a scholarship from the Nelson Soroptimist Society. “I didn’t want just another office job and now is a good time to change,” says Nic. The grant has helped her enter what has been a traditionally male training course, and she is one of two women in her class. They are not the only wom-
en assisted by scholarships given by the soroptimist society. The Nelson Soroptimist Education Trust aims to promote and encourage women in the region to undertake tertiary education. Julia Grigg had four children, a car needing repair and was facing her final year of her counselling course when she was awarded the Janice Neame scholarship. It paid for childcare and to get her car fixed. “My application for a scholarship was a cheeky one. But getting it was a confidence boost. I had just had a baby and was not really in the zone, but someone believing
in me gave me motivation,” she says. Hannah Wilson knew she wanted to work with people but it wasn’t until she was hospitalised following an anaphylactic reaction to sesame seeds that she knew she wanted to be a nurse. As a recent school leaver she also has been awarded a scholarship. The scholarship money largely comes from hireage of graduation gowns and caps. For Julia Grigg, it was a pleasure to pay the fee when she graduated, knowing that she was contributing to another woman achieving her dreams. Nic Russ has started her automotive engineering course. Lotto winner scoops $500k in Richmond Jo Kent Reporter

Local man David Smolenski has done it again and sold yet another jackpot winning Lotto ticket from his Queen Street branch of Night n Day. Dubbed the second luckiest store in New Zealand due to the sheer amount of winning tickets bought there, the first division winner walked away with a staggering $500,000. “We probably won’t ever really know who won,” says David. “We hope it’s a local, but it could be someone who was just passing through. Either way, we wish them all the best.” Coincidently, he also sold a winning second division ticket last week too, and that winner scooped over $30,000. “My family have been running this shop for 28 years,” says David. “And we’ve sold 36 first division winning tickets for Lotto,

Never hitting the jackpot himself, David revealed that the biggest win he has ever had was for $3,000 and he treated his family to a holiday with the proceeds. “I still buy a weekly ticket,” he says.

I am enormously proud of the sacrifice thousands of Nelsonians made in the two world wars that we properly acknowledge each Anzac Day. I am putting my support behind the efforts of The New Zealand War Memorial Museum Trust, to establish in Le Quesnoy, France, a place to tell their story. New Zealand. 100,000 Kiwis served abroad in World War 1, out of our one million people then, the highest proportion of any country. There are 15,000 New Zealanders buried in Europe, many in unknown graves from World Wars 1 and 2, with over 400 from Nelson. The Patron of the Trust is former Labour Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Helen Clark and its Chair is former National
Deputy Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Sir Don McKinnon. This reflects the bipartisan support for this initiative to better commemorate these brave New Zealanders. A building to house the museum has been purchased by the Trust in the French village of Le Quesnoy. This town was liberated on 4th Nov 1918 through extraordinary bravery of the New Zealand Rifle Bri-
gade. They suffered 500 casualties but there was no loss of civilian life and minimal damage to this historic town. It was a far more successful campaign than Gallipoli or Passchendaele. It is an ideal place to pass onto future generations the inspiration from these New Zealander’s service and the lessons from these awful wars. I am assisting the Trust in Nelson with their fund raising for
this museum. I invite descendants of these brave service people from World War 1 and 2 and anyone interested to join Sir Don, the RSA and myself for a complementary afternoon tea and information presentation on the project, this Saturday 3pm at my rooms at 544 Waimea Road. Rachel Boyack meets the Waimea Weekly team Jo Kent Reporter

The Waimea Weekly team got a surprise visit from Rachel Boyack last week. The MP for Nelson came to visit the office for a behind-the-scenes look around and to thank staff for connecting people in the region. “Our local newspapers are so important as they provide a vital link within
the community,” says Rachel. “People often have interesting stories about things happening in their neighbourhood and without the Waimea Weekly , we would never get to hear them. “I think sometimes locals are a bit nervous about being in the paper, but actually we should encourage a culture where people are willing to share their stories and see it as a good thing.”

The MP went on to say that while online news has its place in terms of the speed information is given, there is nothing like a newspaper for a higher standard of journalism and accuracy. Being at alert level 2 when she visited the office, staff were keen to find out if she is going to get the Covid vaccine soon. “Border staff are the priority, but as and when it’s my turn, I will get one,” she says.

Paying it forward one shoe at a time Charles Anderson Journalist
charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz
About 25 years ago Nigel Wood was a single parent on the verge of bankruptcy. He managed to get through some tough times “through hard work and a bit of luck”. So, over the last 15 years, he has sought to give back and pay it forward to various charities. “I’ve got my own kids and they have grow up now, but there were times that were tough. I’ve always thought if you can help, then you should.” Nigel moved up to Nelson a year ago to start a bike parts company called, Bike Life Supply, and came across an article in the local pa-
per. It was about the Walk for Life Trust which was established by a group of local women who wanted to contribute something positive to the community in a targeted way. “After talking with local schools and researching similar organisations in New Zealand, we decided that providing school and sports footwear fitted perfectly with our goals and aspirations as well as community need,” says trustee Helen Ruston. So Nigel decided to donate $2000 to help purchase more shoes. Helen says the trust is beyond grateful. “It is our biggest joy to receive messages of thanks from children and their parents, so appreciative of their new shoes, at a time,
Nigel Wood and Helen Ruston. Photo: Supplied. particularly in recent times, when gate.” Nigel says he liked the idea the world is a little harder to navi- and knew it was something that
would really help the community. “And it’s always better to support things that are local.” Helen says the genuine pride of the children after receiving their shoes is what motivates the trust. “A new pair of shoes can really make a difference to a child’s self-esteem and we have seen this many times over, this is our passion.” She says its fundraising auction is scheduled for later this year and always brings fantastic support from local businesses and community. For more details, contact your child’s school or you can visit our website at walkwithus.co.nz or email us at walkwithusnz@ gmail.com.
NZ Antique and Classic Boat Show
Over 550 students from Waimea Intermediate joined their teammates in fancy dress and sporting team colours to compete in the annual swimming, running, and cycling event last Friday. Usually, the school has a great turn out of spectators in the form of whanau but this year with the region being in level 2 lockdown, spectators were kept away from the event in line with protocols. Principal Justine McDonald says, “It is great we can still hold the event because it’s so important to give the kids some fun in amongst so much uncertainty especially with something like a sporting event.” Pictured are, Evie Mollet, Lilou Dupre, Kasaea Pilo, Stevie Omlo, Lily Kempthorne, Alivia Robinson, Bella CainTownley and Ava Jones. Richmond Firefighters helped with Stoke Blaze
Richmond firefighters joined crew from Stoke and Nelson to fight a house fire in Willow Avenue in Stoke last Thursday. The fire gutted the home, and the occupants have lost everything they owned. One of those occupants is Simon Rees, a volunteer firefighter.
Covid restrictions lifted just in time to allow the 22nd NZ Antique & Classic Boat Show to go ahead as a one-day event last Sunday. The annual show held at Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes National Park usually runs over two days, but drew a good crowd at the weekend, with close to 30 late registrations making up for those unable to travel from Auckland this time around.

Free roaming feathered friends Jacqui Rawson Reporter

Eggs are not just eggs when it comes to the Ewing family who have been producing eggs for almost 40 years in the Nelson Tasman region. There are 65,000 Shaver chickens laying organic, free-range and barn eggs for breakfast tables throughout New Zealand and also further afield into Hong Kong. Paul and Jill Ewing are the owners of Ewing Poultry in partnership with Paul’s parents Lloyd and Gwen who started the business off with two staff. They now have 56 staff taking care of the chickens and getting the eggs to market. “Our main focus is on ensuring our chickens are healthy and happy,” says Paul. Since 2005 they’ve been producing free-range eggs after buying a small dairy farm in Belgrove to meet the growing demand. Chicks are brought from a hatchery in Christchurch in a temperature-controlled
truck then reared in ‘maternity type’ wards says Paul with a smile. Once the chicks are old enough, they are put into fields that have ‘winter gardens’ attached. This means the chickens have somewhere to go during heavy rains and in the cold of winter. These winter structures also keep them safe from wild cats as they make their way in at night and can head out again each morning via the automated chicken-sized doors. “Part of what we do is ongoing monitoring of the chickens, making sure they’re safe and healthy,” he says. Ewings manufacture their food for the chickens using Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) free grains. And the SPCA agrees with them. Ewing has been accredited by the SPCA for the last two years based on its high animal welfare standards and good farming ethics. There is a ‘Trace My Egg’ programme that Ewing ad-
here to which places a stamp on every egg so customers can be assured of where their eggs come from. It’s proof that a customer’s eggs truly come from organic, freerange or barn chickens. “It’s a great scheme because it keeps everyone account-

Sam Mercer and Josiah Martin taking a break from their long walk. Photo: Jenny Nicholson.
Walking the length of New Zealand Jenny Nicholson Reporter
jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Wearing the same shirt and walking 30 km a day might not be everyones idea of fun, but Josiah Martin and Sam Mercer are loving their adventure. They are walking the 3,000 km Te Araroa trail, from Cape Reinga to Bluff. The boys have just finished the North Island and stopped in at home for a visit. “Mum’s happy to see us but not happy to smell us,” says Josiah. Sam says they were very naïve at the start. The walk along 90-mile beach taught them the need for sunscreen, and Josiah says it was the hardest part of the track, getting up by 3 am to get the walk in before the heat of the day. Josiah’s chosen to walk in tramping sandals, and the beach led to some very sore feet. Life is different on the trail - 10.30pm is a late night. Lunch is repetitive,
peanut butter on wraps with maybe the addition of crumbed biscuits or scroggin. Fat falls off, muscles grow, and Sam’s shoes don’t fit now. Feet grow with constant walking. And then there’s the smell! Along the Wanganui river, they were running low on food. They saw wild goats, and with one man running above the goats, and one below, they managed to catch a goat and make a delicious curry for tea. Now they’re due to start the South Island leg. That will mean tramping without shops for up to 10 days and they expect the weight of their pack to go up a lot, to around 20 kgs. Josiah had one river crossing that he mistimed. Instead of waiting for low tide, he found himself holding his pack above his head with the water up to his shoulders. He turned back. They’ve met some interesting people including a 54-year-old Japanese man who first walked New Zealand in 1997 before the trail opened. They’re racing the weather, hoping to get to Bluff before winter.

Prominent Pearless family back in Wakefield Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Three generations of Pearless have been doctors serving the Wakefield community since 1884. In recognition of the renowned family, a project team of historians have been producing ways to remember the impact of the Pearless family on the village. Historical plaques have been created for the village green kiosk and the team have also undertaken
some refurbishment on the Pearless Memorial Gate arch at the playing fields. “I was quite astounded at the quality of the work they have done here,” says Ian Pearless. Walter Relf Pearless set up his practice in 1884. His grandson, Ian Pearless with his wife Olive were visiting Wakefield from Lower Hutt last week and the historians got together to show them what they’ve been working on. “The project team have worked like beavers doing so much research to
produce the information and get it right,” says Olive. “They probably now know more than I do about my own family,” says Ian. The work done by the Wakefield project committee, made up of Heather and Stuart Watts along with Evie-joy South, now incorporates information on the mili-
tary and medical efforts of three of Walter’s sons, Dr Hugh, Reginald and Lessel. They also talk about what was happening in the village and community during this time. The Willowbank Heritage Village also took advantage of Ian being in town to officially open a new part of the Heritage Village
dedicated to Doctor Walter and Hugh Pearless. “The work they’ve got there at Willowbank blew me out of the water, it was quite tremendous,” he says. Bouts of illness have stopped Ian from coming to see the work until now and he’s so glad that he’s finally got to see it.

Seniors cared for in Brightwater and Wakefield Jenny Nicholson A 98-year-old woman is one of the attendees at the weekly exercise and games event run for seniors at the Brightwater Anglican church. Organiser, Nicola Berthelsen, says the elderly lady arrives in her wheelchair and is most delightful. Following the sale of Whareama, money was set aside to be used for older members of the commu-

nity, and Brightwater’s senior care is an initiative from that funding. Alongside group events, Nicola also takes people to appointments and helps with their shopping, even helping to put their groceries away. “Every day is like going to visit my friends. I am very privileged to do this and it is not like going to work at all,” says Nicola. The Thursday group runs from around 10 am to 12 pm, but the finish time depends on how exciting the game is. It has been known to go well past midday. Nicola does a pick-up from Brightwater and Wakefield as part of the service. After 20 minutes of exercises tailored to those who attend, they have morning tea and games. And sometimes the minister pops in for a few minutes to share a thought. “It’s a place to have lots of laughs,”
says Nicola. Once a month they finish early and all attend the lunch put on by St John’s church in Wakefield. A fashion show with the elderly in view, trips to the beach and a trip to Upper Moutere are among the monthly outings they have had. Nicola is hoping to put on an event to help the elderly with the internet. “During lockdown there was a lady who wanted to watch Netflix but didn’t know how. I hear people say, ‘if I touch that button I might do damage so I leave it alone’,” says Nicola. She wants them to be able to bring the device they use all the time and let them ask what they want to know. Because some have short term memories, they may understand something at the time, but not be able to remember the fol-

You are invited to hear Dr. Joseph McCauley who will be speaking at Richmond Community Church this Sunday morning. Joseph and his wife Lisa are just a young couple with three young children who pioneered St.Lukes Church in Tauranga ten years ago. The church is a refreshing and innovative expression of a community of everyday Kiwis who love life and are doing their best to live the way of Jesus in the 21st Century. Committed to being an authentic faith community who live out of a different story than that of consumerism, materialism, individualism and all those other words so often used to so accurately describe our western post-Christian culture. Joseph has a Doctorate from Fuller Theological Seminary in USA and his heart is to help people discover or rediscover an authentic faith community.

Just a thought... Daryl Bay Hope Community Church I didn’t wish Covid-19 a happy first birthday last week. This time last year, NZ registered its first case. Then 2020 happened. Along the way, we’ve all learnt a few lessons. So, in honour of this infamous anniversary, I thought I’d share a few lessons, in no particular order (shout out to my mates at Hope Church who helped me reflect on these and made me chuckle): Toilet paper matters. But don’t overstock. If you need a bathroom stop during a Zoom call, don’t take your device with you, and ALWAYS assume the camera/mic is on. The value of a mute button (not just for Zoom, but for life too). Have we learnt the adult skill of how to listen and be quiet, as well as how to regulate the overdose of information that is constantly
coming at us? Time aside, unplugged and at rest, is good for the soul. Calm, wise leadership is so important, especially in a crisis. But good leadership is made better by the choice of us all to work together, following the model of Jesus who put others first. We do need people – to love and be loved, to know and be known. Healthy people choose to cultivate relationships with neighbours, loved ones, friends. This is one of the signatures of God amongst us – we are made in God’s image, profoundly valuable and created for relationships. Adaptability is key for resilience and good mental health, as Kiwi Lance Burdett says. In his book, The Dark Side of the Brain, Burdett makes a
great case for the powerful role of spirituality for our mental health. Any of the local churches in our district would love to help you with this. If you read about Jesus, you will be blown away by the most remarkable human you could imagine: compassionate, relaxed, purposeful, with an amazing capacity to love. Check out Matthew 11:28-30. If you build your life and identity on what can change, you set yourself up for the ultimate heartache. Write a list of what’s important to you, then cross out each one that can be taken away from you. Job, relationships, health, assets – all these are good things but can be taken from you. God alone is eternal. God alone can be our rock, our anchor, our ultimate source of life.
Ivan Stevens was having renovations done to his bathroom when the builder found something hidden in the wall. It was a photo negative of a wedding party having their official wedding photo taken outside a church. Ivan’s house on Cheyne Walk, near Washbourn Gardens, in Richmond was built in 1951. There are only seven houses on Ivan’s street and none of the neighbours, some who have lived there longer than Ivan can identify neither the people nor the church in the photo. The above photo is the negative Ivan had printed to help try and identify the details. Nothing was written on the wall to go with the negative, but Ivan is pretty sure the wooden church is not in Richmond. Ivan recognises the wedding party are wearing conventional clothing but couldn’t hazard a guess as to the era although he thinks it could be the 1950s. If you’re able to help identify details of the mysterious photo, please contact Ivan at stevensnp@xtra.co.nz.

The story behind the Kite family Simon Scowen Lucy Kite and her husband Thomas Kite left Warwickshire, England, to arrive in Nelson on the 29th March 1843 on the ship Phoebe. The Kite’s all ended up settling with their families around Waimea East. They were arguably the first settlers in Richmond before the settlement even had a name. The intrepid Thomas Kite secured nine acres of land on the township plan and built a modest house, the first in the Waimea East area. The nine acres was situated on what is today Queen Street opposite the Wensley Road corner. With it initially the only habi-
tation encountered in the area, the Kites often ended up providing hospitality to early travellers. At least two visitors leaving a record of their welcome encounters with the Kites, William Wadsworth in 1843 and William Pratt in 1844. Kite made it official in 1845 when he was granted a licence to run his home as a hotel called the Plough Inn. The Plough Inn became a setting for community celebrations, auctions and dinners held for groups like members of the Oddfellows Lodge. Thomas sold the Plough Inn in 1853. Around 1858 Thomas took over another hotel in Richmond called the Red Horse, which was

known to locals as The Trotter. Thomas died four months after the trading licence was granted in April 1860. His burial at Richmond Cemetery on August 24, 1860, was registered but the site of his grave was not recorded. Left on her own with a family to look after and a new business to run, Lucy Kite struggled to make the Red Horse pay its way. In 1865 she sold it and took over as licensee of the White Hart hotel. Apart from the period between 1867-1869 when the White Hart was run by the legendary George Fairweather Moonlight, she managed it from 1866 until 1871. Mrs Kite’s daughter, Lucy mar-

In 1870 Lucy Kite took several shares in the Waimea QuartzCrushing Company, which intended to commence operations at Wangapeka. This may have inspired her to set up accommodation en route to the diggings. However, the Waimea Quartz-Crushing Company appears to have sunk without a trace, adding to Lucy’s ongoing financial woes. It seems unlikely that she would have had funds to spare on such a project - she was in fact adjudged bankrupt in May 1874, although discharged from bankruptcy just one month later. Lucy died at Foxhill on the 19th July 1885, aged 71, and was buried at the Richmond Cemetery.

Full of titanium and still having fun Jenny Nicholson Reporter
jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The Silveraires Leisure marchers know how to overcome obstacles. Fitness, friendship and fun, with a heavy dose of laughter has seen them through many difficult days. With eight titanium hips, three knees, two shoulders and four heart stents between them they march a little differently from their younger days, but they are out there each week enjoying training together. “We’re full of titanium, and fun,” says coach and choreographer Diana Clark. Diana didn’t let hip replacements stop her. She got her crutches out and marched anyway. Diana was a South Island marching champion in the 1950s and Gaye Cooper a New Zealand champion in the 1960s, but they have joined with many others who have never marched before. Gaye says she can’t get her knees as high now after a hip replacement. “Some women are widows and getting them into a group for fitness and friendship is important,” she says. Saying it’s the connections and support base that are really important to the women. Last week they were going to the Nationals in Palmerston
North for six days. Only five minutes of that time was to be marching, the rest, time to enjoy each other. A planned highlight was the Saturday dinner where each team was to dress as their favourite team. For the Silveraires, the obvious choice was the Makos. Tasman rugby union’s Kahu Marfell arranged for them to wear Mako jerseys. “Having them represent Tasman in our jerseys is awesome,” says Kahu. It was a massive disappointment to them to have to pull out of the competition thanks to the Covid level two an-
nouncement. Their love of socialising would have been curbed with no dinner and each team asked to keep to themselves. But they are a positive group. Diana has the next routine ready for them to practice for next year and they still have each other. They will continue to talk and laugh and do some marching. “We are all compulsive talkers. We’re aged from 61 to 81 and the combined number of years these girls have been married is 1007. Two or three are still hunting for a wealthy man,” says Diana.

The Tasman T20 competition continued on Saturday and Wanderers-Motueka Premiers travelled to Botanics to do battle in the abbreviated format against ACOB, the reigning 50 over champions. Put in to bat first WanderersMot got off to a similar start to last time against ACOB in the 50 0ver semi-final and from 12 for three, a sustained batting effort from Harsh Visavadiya (46) and Craig Hampton (31) finally ended the 20th over with 123 runs. ACOB started well and at 55/2 were cruising before the loss of 4 wickets for only 13 additional runs, gave the combined team hope for an upset, with ACOB at 94/6 after 16 overs being similar to Wanderers-Mot 96/4 at the same stage. However,
that crucial wicket needed for victory never eventuated and B.J. Barnett added 20 off 12 balls in the final overs to get ACOB home with an over to spare. Out at Brightwater Domain the College T25 match between Wanderers and Nelson College was a tense, tight encounter. Wanderers batted first and despite three run outs in the innings, eventually recorded 129/6 which did appear to be maybe 10 or 20 light. Noah Lausen put pressure on the Nelson batsmen producing figures of 19/2 off 5 overs, less than half the RPO that Nelson needed. Hogan Ward retired at 53, having scored at a run a ball but in the final over requiring only 6 runs for victory, Captain Ryan Hobbs in a superb leader-
ship role, took two wickets, one from an excellent catch by Billy Bradley, and effected a run out to secure a fine win for Wanderers by two runs. The final wicket fell off the final ball with the result completely in the balance. A wonderful contest and a credit to all participants. This week the Premier Wanderers-Motueka team will play WTTU in a T20 match under lights on Wednesday evening at Brightwater and then host Wakatu on Saturday at Motueka Memorial Park. While cricket is on at Memorial Park, Wanderers rugby team will be having the first per-season hit out against Kahurangi in Motueka as part of this time of years ‘silly season’. The TRU competition is due to start on 10th April.

Finding funding for your community project
Regional Land and Public Transport Plans – have your say
Need some money for your community event or project? Come along to one of two Community Development and Funding Roadshows in March to find out what’s available and how to apply for funding to make it happen.
We’re asking for feedback on the Draft Te Tauihu Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP) 2021 – 2031 and the Nelson-Tasman joint Regional Public Transport Plan (RPTP) 2021 – 31. Submissions are welcome until 17 March 2021.
The Roadshows include information and presentations from Council, the Rata Foundation, Department of Internal Affairs, Te Pūtahitanga o Te Waipounamu, Sport Tasman, and the Office of Ethnic Communities.
The RLTP prioritises the transport projects for the next seven years and seeks funding for them. The RPTP proposes some changes to the bus services in Richmond and Nelson to improve the service as well as providing new services to Wakefield and Motueka.
Each organisation will host a stall after the main presentations, where you can discuss your funding and community development opportunities in further detail.
Get all the details on our website, tasman.govt.nz.
Register at Eventbrite.co.nz. This event is brought to you by the Nelson Tasman Funders Network.
Proposals to Classify Reserves in Moutere-Waimea Ward Don’t forget to have your say by Monday. Despite recent rain, some water restrictions remain in place. These are updated every week as the Dry Weather Taskforce meets to balance demand against the available supply. At the time of printing, as well as restrictions for some water resource consent holders, there are Phase A restrictions in place for everyone on the Dovedale water supply. Please check the website for more details. Even if restrictions aren’t in place for you, now is the time when we all need to conserve water as much as possible. There’s lots you can do at home and at work to reduce your water use. Check it out at tasman.govt.nz/water saving tips and remember, every drop counts!
If you move house, please remember to update your online banking reference – or you may find yourself paying someone else’s rates. We want to allocate your payment to your account but, despite our attempts at detective work, occasionally we have to return funds to the account it came from due to lack of information.
