On a mantlepiece in Wakefield a statue stands proudly in recognition of the dedication to beard growing its recipient, Shane Thompson, has displayed. Shane was crowned national champion at the New Zealand Beard and Moustache competition in Auckland on Thursday, September 20, due to the length, density and colour of his beard which “blew the judges away”. After sporting a goatee in late 2014, the decision was made by Shane to bin his razors and embrace the beard. “It just kept on growing and growing and now I’m kind of known for it,” says Shane, who claims the beard makes him more approachable. It’s not all smooth sailing for the avid beard grower, with it at times “hazardous” and requiring “heavy maintenance”. “I’ve shut it in a car door before and walked away. It felt like someone was trying to pull my face off!” Shane says it’s important for beard growers to keep them clean, well-maintained and tidy them up by neatly trimming, while being cautious not to tie them too tightly and break the hair. The national championships raised awareness of men’s health and mental health issues through raising funds for Lifeline, and Shane’s determined to continue supporting the charity as he looks ahead to future competitions, including the world championships. In 2021 New Zealand is set to host the World Beard and Moustache Championships for the first time after it previously being held in North America and Europe. “I’ll absolutely enter. It’s great to be able to support Lifeline at the same time.”

Quarry company look to resume mining Emily Beaumont Brightwater quarry company Lee Processors is optimistic they’re on the right track to resume mining serpentine rock for fertiliser, after being forced to stop production due to test results showing higher-than-permitted levels of asbestos in their product. A 750-tonne shipment of rock was enroute to Tauranga in June when Lee Processors received laboratory test results, analysed by a modified procedure, which showed some of the serpentine it had been mining contained more than the acceptable workplace limit of asbestos, despite previous tests showing it to be well below the limit. The shipment was placed in quarantine and returned to the quarry. Lee Processors Asbestos Management Plan calls for any quarry
area that’s about to be mined to be tested for naturally-occurring asbestos before it is mined, and only to be mined if asbestos is below `Trace’ levels. This was done, and results received were well below `Trace’ levels, but later tests shared with WorkSafe and their customer would show otherwise. An unfortunate casualty of a New Zealand laboratory’s failure to provide accurate results when testing for asbestos, Lee Processors owner David Irvine says they were only mining the area where the rock was extracted because of the results showing less than `Trace’ levels. The consequences have been farreaching. Moving more than 18,000 tonnes of rock each year, the closure has affected their staff and customers, as well as carriers and the shipping company.
Lee Processors quarry in Brightwater has been the unfortunate victim of incompetent asbestos testing. Photo: Emily Beaumont. The laboratory Lee Processors used is the same one used by WorkSafe and David says it’s possible that dust in the product masked fibres during testing, giving an incorrect result. After an altered procedure was put in place where it was pre-washed,
much higher levels were shown. The laboratory, based in Christchurch, is probably more familiar with testing concrete and tile samples, and David says, in hindsight, providing them with a product vastly different in nature could have presented some diffi-
ginning
culty. It’s tough because we were doing everything right but still get caught in an issue like this,” says David. David met with WorkSafe on Thursday, October 4, for a discussion on the company moving forward and is confident they have an acceptable plan. “It involves us putting our own lab in place and taking charge of the initial analysis of our product and having the results verified by a specialist asbestos lab. “We have to be in a position where our customers can have confidence in the product we produce.” Others in the industry have previously expressed distrust in New Zealand laboratories and opted to outsource to Australia, where their testing methods appear to be more accurate.

ALLERGY problem?
The end of an era for DVD store Amy Russ United Video Richmond has announced it will be closing its doors for good on Sunday, October 28. The long-standing video store has been providing patrons with family movie nights and rainy day snuggles for many years and has been the only one left in Richmond since Video Ezy’s closing in November 2015.
United Video Richmond’s manager Lyn Caldwell says it’s the end of an era. “The staff and I will miss our wonderful customers immensely. They are like family and close friends and we know most of their names off by heart. As much as this is a sad time, we would like to thank all of you for supporting us over the years and giving us a wealth of fantastic memories (some hilarious) and we wish
you all the very best for the future.” Allen and Karen Knott, owners of United Video Nelson, will have the last DVD store left standing in the Top of the South and Lyn says they would be more than happy to look after Richmond’s customers after the store closes. The closing down sale started on October 3 and will run until its final day on October 28, with DVD’s at bargain prices.

Sun shines for Kell’s motorcycle convoy Amy Russ An organised meet and greet at the region’s new Harley Davidson dealer on Quarantine Rd, Filco Harley Davidson, was packed to the brink on Sunday, October 7, when Greg ‘Kell’ Kelly rode in on his motorcycle with a host of local supporters. Kell is making his way through the country on his Harley Davidson to raise awareness and funds for Younger Onset Dementia. Delegate organiser and motorcyclist Steve Page was impressed with the turnout of riders who congregated at the dealership after escorting Kell into Nelson from Havelock. Filco Harley Davidson’s dealer principal Dave Filer says it was a privilege to be involved in Kell’s ride. “To be able to meet this amazing guy and share his passion for Harley-Davidson, and to hear his story about his journey with dementia. A big thanks also to the huge number of motorcyclists who rode and supported Kell during his time in Nelson.” Steve says it was a beautiful day for a ride, a great chance for a meet and greet with Kell, and the perfect opportunity for riders to have a look at New Zealand’s newest Harley dealership!

Accident blocks road and cuts power A medical event caused the driver of a Sollys freight truck to career into a power pole on the Appleby Highway last Thursday, October 4, around 4pm. The driver sustained non-serious injuries and was taken to hospital. Sollys management say he is now recovering at home. The incident blocked the road and cut power to 3000 properties from Mapua to the Moutere. Network Tasman says power was fully restored by 7pm that evening.

Mapping out a new passenger service The Nelson Tasman Community Transport Trust is in development, with a twin aim of breaking down isolation in the outlying settlements and reducing the community’s dependence on private car travel. Organiser Kate Malcolm says the Trust will fund-raise to buy electric vehicles and will rely on volunteer drivers to provide an affordable and flexible service to the community. “Quite a few similar trusts operate in other areas lacking public transport, including Marlborough Sounds and Golden Bay, so it’s time we designed a system here to look after people living in Tapawera, Wakefield, Brightwater, Mapua, Upper Moutere, Tasman, Motueka or anywhere in between.” A meeting is planned for Wednesday, October 17, in the Heaphy Room of Tasman District Council offices from 10am to 12 noon. ‘Thrips’ rife in region With the advent of a warmer, moister climate comes the associated problem of plant pests, both bacterial and insectile. People are experiencing the effects of Thrips in the region – a pervasive insect that lives on the underside of plant leaves and feeds from the goodness. They can be identified primarily by the silvering of the top of the leaf and a brown suede look underneath. Active from spring until autumn, Thrips comes out of hibernation in the soil when the ground warms up. Left unchecked Thrips will ultimately kill the host plant. Steve Linney from the Big Plant Depot says spraying in spring and autumn will fix the problem, but it has to be an annual event.
Dog poo disappoints Regular walkers and users of the numerous tracks around and above Richmond are becoming increasingly disappointed with the amount of dog droppings in doggy-do bags littering the walkways. “The latest one I came across was just a stone’s throw from the doggy doo dispenser, and more importantly, the rubbish bin. The only thing worse than finding a dog poo on the track is a dog poo in a plastic bag left on the track,” says one disgruntled track user. Dog owners are asked to please do the right thing and take the bag with you to place in the next rubbish bin.

Craig Hamilton from Richmond’s Mike Pero Real Estate presents Kristin Paterson of Whole Lotta Life Foundation with a $4000 cheque toward the charity’s upcoming retreat. Photo: Emily Beaumont.
Whole Lotta Life out there for cancer patients Emily Beaumont Hope woman Kristin Paterson knows only too well the challenges you face when confronted with cancer, so she established the charity Whole Lotta Life Foundation to help other young adults forced to walk the same path. Nearly ten years ago, at just 26 years, Kristin was diagnosed with cancer. A cruel diagnosis for the mother of two that in-
cluded a ten-week old baby. “Everything in my life started to turn on its head. I had just had a baby, my career had to go on hold and I felt more and more isolated as my condition worsened.” Coming out the other side and establishing The Whole Lotta Life Foundation, her mission is simple – that no young adult should have to face cancer alone. ‘Young adults’ is a group made up of people aged between 20 and 45 years - young people who
are just starting out at life, starting careers, starting families, starting adventures – who then, overnight, have to deal with a multitude of social, psychological and medical challenges. While most of their peers are leading healthy, active and busy lives, a cancer diagnosis makes it difficult for these young adults to keep up socially, academically and professionally, as well as relate to others, with isolation one of the biggest issues faced. This is
where Kristin’s charity steps in, and together with the generous support of Craig Hamilton from Richmond’s Mike Pero Branch, they run five-day retreats in Kaiteriteri to help young New Zealanders affected by cancer, by bringing them together to rest and connect. From Wednesday, October 17, twelve participants on this year’s retreat will feel connected, heard and understood during the charity’s fifth retreat since 2014.

Amy Russ Students of Tapawera and Murchison Area Schools recently combined forces for the Year 11 – 13 senior school formal, in Tapawera. Sarah Peacock, deputy principal of Murchison Area School, says, “having a combined formal was a first for the two schools and required a team effort from the organising committees from both schools to make it happen.” Principal of Tapawera Area School Kelvin Woodley says, “there is a long history of joining together for sporting events and staff professional development, but not for a ball. The theme for the evening was ‘A Night with the Stars’ and black and white predominated in the hall decoration and set-up.” This year the Murchison students travelled by bus to Tapawera who were hosting the formal, and Sarah says next year, Murchison will return the favour and will host the formal with Tapawera travelling to join in. “Both schools counted the event a success and feedback from the students was that it was a great idea.” King and Queen of the ball were Kelsyn Macdonald and his partner Puna Wikaira from Tapawera, runners-up were Matua Wilson and Tralee Watson from Murchison, says Kelvin. The event was supported by the local Fire Brigade, numerous staff from both schools, year 10 students from Tapawera, the Tapawera Op Shop, as well as the Community Patrol and Wakefield Police.

Giant plant leaves its legacy Amy Russ Brightwater resident June Johnston has a plant growing in her front yard that is growing a spire at around eight inches a day. June planted the Furcraea parmentieri 27 years ago and says, “there was absolutely nothing here when we moved in, it was desolate. “So I went around all of my friends getting cuttings and spare plants. This one was only about
a metre tall when I put it in the garden.” June says the spire first showed around three months ago and has been growing around eight inches a day. Steve Linney from Big Plant Depot, on Main Rd Hope, says, “they take years to flower, but are spectacular when they do, and then they die. Pups grow underneath to continue the cycle.” The plant needs little maintenance and will last for years, but
will only flower once before subsequently dying. It will spend its time growing and building up energy in the leaves, stem and roots, with the purpose of reproducing. The expiring plant leaves a legacy of small plantlets on the flower stem, ready to begin again. The Furcraea parmentieri is a member of the Agavaceae family. A succulent plant with blue/ green foliage and described as an easy-care, drought-tolerant plant,
the Furcraea parmentieri is native to the dry regions of central southern Mexico at altitudes of 2500m-3300m. According to Dylan Norfield, the collection curator of the Geographic and Arboretum collections at Dunedin Botanic Garden, it can be hardy down to -5 degrees, or lower, and thrives in dry, free-draining poor soils with little irrigation once established. It is happy in sun or partial shade but hates permanently wet soil
conditions. June says her magnificent plant certainly has the neighbours watching in awe, trying to figure out what the heck is going on. There must be something in June’s soil, as it seems all of her plants are looking exceptionally healthy. But June is humble, “the plants are nice and ornamental when they are coming up, but they are starting to look a bit bedraggled now!”

Local students take out inaugural readers competition Emily Beaumont On Wednesday, September 26, two teams from Waimea College competed in the inaugural Slanza Aoraki Top of the South Readers Cup Competition and were placed first and second overall against 14 other teams from all over the Top of the South.
Oliver Chandler says their success at the competition was “surprising”. “It felt good to be the firstever team in the Top of the South to win the competition,” says Oliver. Around 60 students from eight high schools across the region competed in teams of four to answer sets of questions
on six books. The event was organised by the school’s librarians after being inspired by a similar Australian event that was introduced to the North Island a few years ago. Each librarian wrote the questions for one book and the teams from Waimea College got together every couple of weeks leading up to
the event for tips and tricks from their dedicated teacher coordinator Siobhian Bolt and school librarian Dinah Warren. The students all agree on the importance of reading and having books in their lives. “I like reading, you can escape what’s going on in life,” says Milla Glasgow.

Nelson Matters Our new airport terminal was blessed last Friday and opened for passengers this Tuesday. It is stunning. I love the architecture that mirrors our mountains, the laminated timber manufactured by Nelson Pine and the huge glass frontage that captures our famed sunshine and wonderful vista. The engineer in me is also excited by the use of the new tectonus seismic system that you can see in the timber columns. The upgrade was overdue. The old terminal was opened in 1974 when passenger numbers were 20,000 a year. It has become increasingly over crowded over the past decade as numbers have soared to over
a million a year. Nelson is New Zealand’s fifth busiest airport after Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown, despite many other centres being larger. This reflects our geographical isolation, popular tourism industry and the frequency and quality of our air services. I commend the leadership and project management of this massive project. We owe our thanks to Nelson Airport Board Chair Paul Steere, CEO Rob Evans, Project Manager Matt Griffin, their full team and the architects, contractors and subbies. Constructing a project of this size while keeping
the airport functioning safely is a logistics nightmare. We still have a year of transition ahead of us as the old terminal is demolished, the new terminal extended south and the roading and parking infrastructure reconfigured. Our two Councils deserve credit for supporting this $30m investment in our region’s infrastructure. I have been pushing for this upgrade since 2010 and both Mayors and Councils have been supportive. My role was in helping get the $5m capital approval from Cabinet for the new Airways Corporation control tower. This new terminal is also a statement of how important aviation is
544 Waimea Road, Nelson
to the region. Prime Minister Syd Holland was ridiculed in the 1950s when the Government provided £20,000 for the airport in compensation for not linking Nelson to the national railway network. His statement then that air travel would become more important than rail has proved to be true. There are some who have ambitions for international flights into Nelson and who have lobbied for runway extensions to enable jet services. I am cautious. Ratepayers in Rotorua, Invercargill, Palmerston North and Hamilton are paying dearly for similar big plans. Our airport is one of the few in regional New Zea-
land that pays Councils a dividend. Nelson has carved out a niche as a centre of excellence in turboprop aircraft. Our services work because of their frequency and competitiveness. Nelson Airport is better to focus on being the best rather than the biggest. The airport is a gateway for our region. It is about first impressions for visitors. It is where we farewell our loved ones. It is where we welcome home our heroes. My hope for the completed project is a warm, friendly and welcoming place that celebrates the nature, art and industries that make Nelson so special. Advt.

Since its inception in 2005, In Haus has annually entered the prestigious Master Builders House of the Year Awards and has consistently faired well; all of its homes entered have won medals, including two local supreme winners and four national category winners. Their most recent success this year was ‘Local Category Winner and Gold Award for New Homes in the $700-000 to $1,000,000’ prize bracket, as well as local winner for Sustainable Homes. In 2015, their son Shaun, who is a builder at InHaus, revealed he has the same ‘meticulous’ eye as his Dad, taking out the national ‘Apprentice of the Year’ award. “Russell’s previous training as a joiner gave him precise attention to detail. He’s also a qualified builder and has broad knowledge of the industry and building processes.” Meanwhile, Tanya’s extensive experience as an interior designer is also a huge asset to InHaus. “Russell and I do most of the designing together with architect Hugh Grant – we work well together. We try to
create homes which are a little bit unique, are stylishly designed, using good quality materials.” Over the years InHaus has gone from strength to strength, which Russell partly attributes to its focus on quality over quantity, and on only delivering the best workmanship possible. “We’d rather do only five or six homes a year to a high standard.” If you are looking to build your dream home, InHaus build everything from modest economical houses to luxury holiday homes, and has a great line up of consented, ready-to-go Home and Land packages. What is the safest car seat? The safest car seat has nothing to do with brand, make or model. The safest car seat is the one that fits your child, fits your car and is installed and used correctly every time. That includes the use of a tether strap, where fitted, are tight and secure seat belts to hold the car seat and child in place. Following the car seat manufacturer’s

Jacob Klootwyk, one of the founding members of the building committee for the hall, says, “we wanted to give everyone an opportunity to put the names of their children, grandchildren and other loved ones onto the stones, to be buried into
the foundations of the new building. We wanted the community to feel as if they are a part of the process. “We have been working on fundraising for a long time and it will be exciting to have the building finally completed.” Jacob says the new $1million facility will be available for community events and it is hoped that it will encourage people to come together and share whatever is on offer. The building committee would like to extend their thanks to Rata, Lotto, Nelson Pine Industries, GJ Gardiner, Trinder Engineers and others who have generously supported the community project. Local talent shines in Las Vegas Amy Russ Twelve local dancers recently travelled to Las Vegas to compete at Starpower - a stage where performers of all ages and levels across the globe showcase their talent - and Kids Artistic Revue (KAR), one of America’s most prominent dance competitions. Two of the girls danced their way to the top and secured themselves individual titles during the September trip. The group came together just over a year ago to rehearse and learn the two lyrical and contemporary group dances, as well as solo, duo and trio section dances. Rhianna Steer won the overall title of Starpower National Champion for Intermediate Solo and first place for Intermediate Tap 16 years. Rhianna says she was surprised when she heard her name called out, “I did not expect to win my tap section, let alone the overall intermediate group. It was surreal to be on the stage with dancers from all over the world including USA, Canada, Australia, Mexico and my friends from New Zealand. It was an amazing feeling that a tap dancer from Nelson could beat dancers of other genres who regularly
compete in this standard of competitions. I didn’t go expecting to come away with anything but the experience of dancing on an American stage.” Hannah Stevenson also made an impression on the judges, winning Starpower National Champion for Novice Lyrical and first place Novice lyrical 17 years. “This was definitely my biggest competition to date,” says Hannah, “I am not a competition kind of girl and haven’t won since I was little. So, to win my section in the USA, I was pretty stoked. It meant that all the hard work leading up to it had paid off. To be called up to stand in front of the audience and say my studio name and that I came from New Zealand was such a surreal feeling that I will never forget.” “Since we were such a small group all the way from New Zealand we had to really support each other at the competitions because, of course, no one knew us. So we would cheer extra loud for each other when we performed and it made it that much more fun. It was an amazing experience and to share it with a bunch of your friends just made it even better. We all got so close over the three weeks and shared a lot of laughs and special memories.”

Busy season as tournaments ramp up Nelson Hockey Association (NHA) players have been testing their mettle as national tournaments amp up across the country. The NHA under-15 girls team competed in Carterton last week at the girls national tournament. The girls conducted themselves well against the other teams, taking ninth place in the competition. Heather Davidson, team manager, says, “Nelson were proud to have won four and lost two games and claim ninth position.” Team captain Jess David-
son earned herself MVP for the tournament. NHA’s under-15 boys team travelled to Christchurch to compete at the boys tournament last week, placing twelfth overall. Team manager Shelley Smith says, “the boys can be incredibly proud of both the result and the way they have carried themselves this season. They have left everything on the turf, played to the final whistle and proven themselves worthy of the Nelson uniform.” Also underway is the 2018 National under-13 boys Hatch Cup
Trophy at Saxton Turf. Twentyfour teams from across New Zealand have descended upon the grounds for the week-long tournament, with twenty games a day being played this week. Operations manager Fabian Amor says, “it is a great opportunity to host these teams from all over the country and to watch all our provinces playing at this event. “We can appreciate all the talent and future for our sport.” Finals are being played on Saturday, October 13, at the NHA hockey turf.

Triathletes battle it out on Rabbit Island Some of the country’s top multisport athletes mixed it with weekend warriors at Sunday’s Kayak HQ Multisport Triathlon, organised by the Nelson Triathlon Club at Greenslade Park on the inlet at Rabbit Island. Cameron Jones led the way on the run to the kayaks, but once on the water Dan Busch took the lead on the 8km paddle over a two-loop course up the Waimea River. Cameron clawed back some of the deficit on the 17km road bike course, but Dan held on, increasing his lead
slightly over the 3.4km run to win by five minutes. Frances Riley was quickest in the women’s field. In the meantime, non-paddlers fought out a run-bikerun duathlon. Newcomer Pete Marshall was fast out of the blocks over the opening 3.4km run, but Jon Linyard soon asserted himself, stretching out his lead over the 17km bike and final 3.4km run to win by three minutes from Roydon Hawkes. Carol Cooper had caught Pete on the bike ride and the
pair went into the final run close together. Fighting hard, Pete just took third place overall, with Carol hot on his heels to take the top women’s spot. An enthusiastic throng of competitors also competed over more recreational short events in both multisport and duathlon. The club now turns its attention to the Port Nelson Swim Series, starting November 8 and the Chia Super Sprint Triathlon on November 18. Full details and race results at nelsontriclub.co.nz.

Richmond youth scoops second at mini motocross The brand new Yamaha YZ65 has not been on the market for very long, but the impact felt at the weekend’s New Zealand Mini Motocross Championships near Porirua was massive, and Richmond’s Wills Harvey was among the competition, coming a close second. It was a Yamaha 1-2-4 at the top of the premier 9-11 years’ 65cc class at the Moonshine track, in the Akatarawa Valley, about halfway between Lower Hutt and Porirua, and the results really don’t come much better than that. More than 160 riders entered this year’s TSS Red Baron Motorcycles and Friday Homessponsored mini nationals and were greeted by an immaculately-prepared track at Moonshine,

ha YZ65), who won the premier 9-11 years’ 65cc class after a weekend-long battle with Richmond’s Wills Harvey (Yamaha YZ65), although several other riders in this class also featured with race wins to their credit. Wills was just five points adrift of Teddy at the start of the weekend’s final 9-11 years’ race, but Teddy managed to stay ahead of Wills throughout the seven-lap affair and the title was therefore settled in Teddy’s favour. Third overall in this class was Coles (KTM), who finished 24 points behind Wills, while another rider on one of the new Yamaha YZ65 machines, Hastings youngster Charlie Schaw, finished just two points behind Coles to grab fourth overall for the championship.
“I just knew I needed to win, or at least finish ahead of Wills Harvey in that last race,” says Teddy, a year seven pupil at Martinborough School. “It was frustrating for me when I lost so many points in the first race today (Sunday). I had a terrible start and managed to get back up to 11th at the end of the race,” he says - that 11th placing the only time he didn’t finish either first or second all weekend. Teddy beat Wills by seven points in the final analysis and, if the talented South Island rider had not crashed twice, both times while leading the way, in the first two 9-11 years’ 65cc class races on Saturday, their respective final rankings could so easily have been reversed.

Rugby League set to grow from grassroots in Tasman Bay Peter Jones Dominic Tola plans to grow rugby league in the Tasman area – and he wants to start from the grass roots. The 25-year-old, who was appointed as the region’s rugby league development officer in May 2018, admits his focus is firmly on the younger brigade as he sets about building a youth player base to ultimately augment senior ranks. Originally from Australia, Dominic came to New Zealand six
years ago and, after completing physical education and commerce degrees in Otago, moved north to take over the Tasman role from the departing Duke Climo. The Cronulla Sharks fan has had a lifelong passion for league, having played the game growing up across the ditch and for Otago University. Now he is fully focused on helping others into the sport. Tasman Rugby League are hoping to grow the senior competition next year, “maybe adding another team
or two”, while putting extra energy into taking the game to the younger brigade. He spent a good part of last term introducing league to the region’s intermediate schools. “The schools were all pretty receptive to it,” he says. “I am hoping to get a junior league going for that age group.” At the end of last term, a tournament between the intermediate schools was organised. There were four boys teams; from Waimea Intermediate, Nelson Intermediate, Riwaka School and
St Pauls, along with three girls teams from Waimea Intermediate, Riwaka and St Pauls. “We have never had a separate girls division before, so that was encouraging. A lot of the girls had not done contact sport before but they all seemed to enjoy it.” The development continued earlier this month when an under-12 Tasman team travelled to Greymouth for a development tournament. Most of the players had been involved in the intermediate programme and they gave a bold
showing on the coast. “They played two West Coast teams and a Canterbury team, who play regularly throughout the season. Although we didn’t win any games they were all tight contests and the kids really enjoyed it, which is the main thing.” Dominic is relishing his new role, which he admits has its challenges given the amount of sports available to youngsters these days. “It’s been good, I’m really enjoying introducing the sport to the youngsters … there is such a lot of talent in the area.”

Three packs of runners and walkers took to the Richmond Hills on Saturday, October 6, to enjoy the many and varied tracks in the area. There was a lot of positive feedback after the run and athletes found it great to explore new territory with like-minded people. The views down from the trails were awesome and added to the appreciation of the event. Meanwhile, in Christchurch, Nelson was well represented in the annual Takahe to Akaroa Road Relay, with six Athletics Nelson teams competing in this National Event. The ‘Over 60’ men’s teams ran particularly well to take out 1st and 3rd places in their Grade. This was the first time in the history of the 78-year-old relay that two teams from the same club have managed podium finishes. Andrew Barker from the winning team also broke the record for the fastest Lap 1 runner in the 60+ grade. About 80 runners and walkers enjoyed the first of the Wednesday Turf Hotel 5km races last week. The news will be out how good these races are and members look forward to another run on Wednesday, October 10. Next Saturday, October 13, Athletics Nelson are organizing the local race, with information on the whereabouts of this on their website. Every race is an opportunity to train for the Nelson Half Marathon, which is now only four weeks away.
