Paintball park could close down A popular paintball park in Appleby may be forced to shut down unless it is allocated a new site within the Tasman District Council’s Waimea River Park development. The Waimea River Park Management Plan was initially developed by the TDC in 2010, and includes management and development of approximately 394 hectares of land alongside the Waimea River. The four-hectare paintball operation at Challies Island has been on the same site for 26 years, and has been given until next February to move, in order to make way for a wetland restoration within the Waimea River Park. Although owner of Paintball Nelson Appleby, Wayne Stockdale, accepts the need for the wetland restoration project, he is becoming frustrated by the lack of assistance from council to provide an alternative site within the park.

Wayne had a meeting with the council last Thursday to discuss a possible relocation site but could not reach a resolution. Communications advisor for the council, Chris Choat says they are more than happy to work in partnership with

Classic boats shine at Rotoiti
The sixteenth New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show may have been treated to a shower only the ducks could appreciate, but it didn’t manage to dampen the spirits of those who attended. The two day event attracted around 120 classic and antique boats to the alpine venue at Lake Rotoiti where, if plans had not been disrupted, a schedule of races would have enter-

tents. Thankfully, the weather came right later on in the afternoon and boat owners who couldn’t restrain themselves any longer were finally able to take to the lake. Appleby man Peter Tait has had his steam launch, Vital Spark, since 2000 and has been to every single Antique and Classic Boat Show
