Paintball park could close down A popular paintball park in Appleby may be forced to shut down unless it is allocated a new site within the Tasman District Council’s Waimea River Park development.

The Waimea River Park Management Plan was initially developed by the TDC in 2010, and includes management and development of approximately 394 hectares of land alongside the Waimea River.

The four-hectare paintball operation at Challies Island has been on the same site for 26 years, and has been given until next February to move, in order to make way for a wetland restoration within the Waimea River Park.

Although owner of Paintball Nelson Appleby, Wayne Stockdale, accepts the need for the wetland restoration project, he is becoming frustrated by the lack of assistance from council to provide an alternative site within the park.

“I have no hidden agenda with the council at all and I have known about the Waimea River Park for quite some time now, but I feel I am not receiving any assistance from them on a new site within the park for our business,” says Wayne.

The river park plan states that it will review the paintball operation and permit establishment of a paintball operation elsewhere within the park, provided the adverse effects of the activities can be avoided or mitigated. Wayne had a meeting with the council last Thursday to discuss a possible relocation site but could not reach a resolution.

“It’s a copy of the Edwardian lake boats that used to be on Lake Windermere in Britain at the turn on the century.

“This hull was a replica built in 1986 in Norwich, in the UK, and it was shipped out to the first owner in Hong Kong,” says Peter.

“It steamed in Hong Kong harbour from 1988 until 1994, then he got a bit worried about the People’s Republic taking Hong Kong back, so

he decided to immigrate to New Zealand, bought his steam launch with him, but within two years decided to sell; his loss, my gain. I’ve had a lifelong love affair with steam.

As a young lad I used to ride on the steam ferries in the Waitemata harbour and never forgot it. I chose a different career path but thought to myself ‘one day when I retire, I’m going to take it up again’ and my one day has arrived.”

“One of things the council is relying on is that Mr Stockdale knows his business better than we do, he needs to identify a geography and landscape within the area that works best for him and then we can sit down and discuss further,” says Chris.

Wayne says that because of its central location, the paintball operation is not only used for recreation but used by schools and education facilities from around the region too.

“When I grew up, Dad took me rabbit shooting and I learned about guns, where do kids learn those skills these days?

Our operation is much more than just a bit of fun, it is about educating the kids on gun handling and safety too.

“Last week, I was even approached by a primary school who wanted to recreate a scene from Gallipoli to educate 75 children on what it was like to be in the trenches. The council

needs to realise this facility is used for educational purposes too and is important to our community,” says Wayne.

After users of the facility heard about the possible shut down, they created a Facebook page which now has over 700 people opposing the park’s possible closure.

Nelson has enjoyed its secondbest tourist year on record and the news is expected to get even better once data around tourist numbers in Nelson for the Cricket World Cup are released.

Nelson and Tasman had more than 1.25 million “guest nights” in 2014, meaning one night stayed by each tourist in the region.

That’s a jump of five per cent from international visitors alone, compared to the year before.

Those extra people have helped fuel spending as well, with Nelson once again topping the country’s spending growth through eftpos provider, Paymark.

Last week, Paymark announced a 10 per cent increase for Nelson for the month of February, the highest in the country. Much of that growth has been put down to tourists with the accommodation and hospitality sectors seeing the biggest jump.

Effluent site opens at Three Brothers Corner Monique Bergman

A brand-new stock effluent storage facility at Three Brothers Corner in Richmond was officially opened today.

The new facility is a collaboration between the New Zealand Transport Agency, Nelson City Council, and Tasman District Council.

Regional Performance Manager Mark Owen says the Agency is grateful to both Councils for allowing them to develop the site, which will help to improve the safety of road users by keeping slippery effluent from spilling out onto the road.

The high-tech facility features electronic sensors in the underground tank which sends a message to the monitoring team to alert them when getting full. The closest similar facilities are in Blenheim and Murchison, so local truckies will benefit from using the new site.

WATER RESTRICTIONS: All water restrictions in Tasman district for both water permit holders and urban consumers were lifted on Monday following last Friday’s rain. The council’s Dry Weather Taskforce convenor Dennis Bush-King says the rain recharged the aquifers, and improved flows in rivers and streams.

The council will continue to monitor river flows and groundwater levels across the district and will reinstatement restrictions if river flows and aquifers drop to trigger levels.

Anger grows over trimmed mowing budget Tasman district councillors have been under attack from ratepayers who are alarmed at the state of grass verges on roads around the district after council cut the budget of its road-side mowing programme.

Tasman District Council trimmed its roadside mowing programme two years ago, reducing the number of cuts from three or four to twice a year to save an estimated $160,000.

The next round of mowing was scheduled to be carried out this month but the work

has been delayed because of the high fire danger, leaving roadsides overgrown and untidy.

“I’ve been getting a lot of feedback on the roadside mowing,” councillor Stu Bryant told a meeting of the engineering services committee earlier this month.

“It looks untidy and some of the intersections are difficult to see because of the long grass.”

However, Richard says that any concerns about the long grass compromising the safety of Tasman roads would be promptly investigated by council.

“I have had a few people commenting to

me that the roadside doesn’t look as good but that goes back to the decision to go from three to two mows a year,” Richard says.

“The response we have been giving to them is that these are the sorts of things we have to do to keep rates affordable.

“But I appreciate that it can be a safety issue and if that’s the case people should contact council and let us know. We’ll go out there and have a look and if it’s affecting road safety we’ll trim the grass,” he says.

Snapper Classic postponed until this weekend Andrew Board Heavy rain and wind forced the Tasman Bay Snapper Classic to be postponed over the weekend and, while it created plenty of headaches for organisers, it’s good news for local fishermen.

Troy Dando says the decision to hold the competition for a week was made last Thursday due to safety concerns. But he also wanted to make sure the competition is worthwhile for the entrants.

“We could see the weather coming and decided it wasn’t worth it. We’ve held it a week and everyone who entered is automatically reentered. But if they can’t make it we will refund their entry money, no problems.”

It also means extra teams have until Thursday night to enter. “Some people who couldn’t make the original date will now be able to take part, and that’s great,” he says.

New airline flying to Nelson first

Brigade competes at regionals The Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade finished 13th in the four-person teams event at its debut at the National Waterway Challenge held in Greymouth from March 5 to 7.

The Waterway Challenge, which has been held since 1885, tests hoserunning and pump-operating skills of the brigade’s in a competition format.

The country’s newest airline, Kiwi Regional Airlines, will start flying out of Nelson as early as September when it will offer seven-day a week flights between Nelson and Queenstown, Palmerston North, Hamilton, Auckland and Tauranga.

The Hamilton-based Kiwi Regional Airlines announced its proposed routes this week and Nelson was first in line for the new flights. The airline will fly two, twin-engine Saab 340A planes that carry 34 passengers on two routes out of Nelson, starting sometime from September to February.

“We can’t give an exact date at this stage because we have to apply for Civil Aviation authority which is required for all airlines,” the airline’s route network development manager, Dave Macpherson, says. “We still have to employ people and produce our operational manuals and they all have to be vetted by Civil Aviation and that can take up to three to five months.”

Dave says one of the planes will fly from Dunedin to Queenstown, Nelson, Hamilton and Auckland and return via the same route once a day while the other will fly from Nelson to Palmerston North return three times a day with one on-going connection to Tauranga.

The flights will include full In-flight service provided by a flight attendant with refreshments and snacks offered to all passengers.

Volunteer firefighters join forces for field day Jacob Chandler One might question a snowy white tree in the middle of Rabbit Island in March, that is until you see a dozen firefighters standing around it testing out a compressed foam fire hose.

Local emergency services held a field day at Rabbit Island on Sunday in an effort to promote co-operation between emergency services and demonstrate

the equipment available in the wider region.

The event was attended by a number of volunteer fire brigades, Search and Rescue, Civil Defence and Saint John.

Activities ranged from operating fire apparatus to filling a monsoon bucket.

There were a number of discussions around the safe and effective operation of equipment.

One of the rotation activities involved

pre-treating trees with compressed foam. A retardant and extinguisher used during forest fires that uses less water than traditional water hoses.

A new fire appliance, which was officially handed over to the rural fire network on Sunday was on display as well.

The Waimea Rural Fire Network has not had to deal with any large fires this year with the last large fire in February last year.

Flight was a rough ride for passengers Monique Bergman Passengers on an Air New Zealand flight were screaming and throwing up as they flew into Nelson on Friday morning.

Flight NZ5270 hit severe turbulence while flying from Christchurch.

Half way through the flight, passengers onboard were warned by the pilot to expect turbulence due to storm conditions.

He said that he would try his best to land the plane in Nelson, however may need to divert the flight back to Christchurch.

The plane then experienced violent shuddering and shaking for around 20 minutes, with many passengers screaming and several needing to use more than one sick bag.

Passengers clapped and cheered in relief when the plane eventually landed. No injuries were reported.

Second generation starting at St Paul’s Monique Bergman A second generation of family is now playing in the grounds of St Paul’s School Richmond for the first time since it was established in 1999.

Beth Wadsworth started at the school as an intermediate student and wanted to give her eldest daughter, Aaliyah, the same nurturing environment she had experienced there. Her daughter has now started in year one and is very at home in her mother’s old classroom. “Even though it has grown, the school still has a small community feel, parents chat to you and you have a good relationship with the teachers and it is linked to the community. When I was there, the older kids took the little kids under their wing and looked after them and I still see that happening today,” says Beth.

The school started with 45 students, three teaching staff, a teaching principal and one administrator. In the 15years since, the roll has increased to 215 students, ten full-time teachers with an overall

staff of 22.

Not only has the roll expanded but the buildings have too. There were originally three classrooms, a principal’s office and a combined library and staffroom. There are now 11 classrooms, an office, staff room and purpose-built library.

Beth remembers playing on an empty field at lunch break, however the grounds have been developed and now include established trees and shrubs, a large playground, sports fields, courts and a landscaped sacred space.

Ron Locke, who has been part of the school staff since its formation, remembers helping parents to assemble desks and organise classrooms the weekend before the school opened. He says it has been a success due to its continuing ethos of working together as a community to achieve the best for the children.

“Like any new school we had some teething problems at the beginning but over the years we have ironed those out and it is a great school with good community spirit and character,” says Ron.

Former Tour de France rider Nathan Dahlberg is used to cycling up high mountains, but even the tour’s legendary ascents up L’Alpe d’Huez and Le Mont Ventoux will seem like molehills compared to the next mountain he plans to climb.

The Nelson-based cyclist, who rode in the Tour de France in 1988 and 1989, is aiming to set a new world record by riding a bike on top of the 8051 metre Broad Peak in Pakistan.

Weekly Broad Peak is the 12th highest mountain in the world and if Nathan is successful he will break Your Community the present record of biking on the 7564m Newspaper Nelson’s Nathan Dahlberg will attempt to set a new world record for the highest bike ride.

In reply to Ian’s comment: What I don’t understand is why is Waimea Rd not suitable as the primary road for trucks etc? It is wide and pretty straight. The only issue is the way it enters the city. An alternative entry/ exit route via St Vincent St seems logical.

Friday’s closure of Rocks Rd should serve as a reminder to all those in favour of the Southern Link that they need to take off their blindfolds and look at the bigger picture.

All the traffic from Tahunanui to Nelson was using Bisley Ave and Princes Drive. These roads are totally unsuitable for that amount of traffic.

Add to that the huge increase in traffic pushed through Whakatu Drive from Annesbrook roundabout, and the extra delays caused by that increase, and it is plain to see how vital Rocks Rd is as a State Highway. Simply building a new road for the sake of it is not the way forward. We need to look at sustainable ways of reducing the number of single occupant cars on our roads, starting with our hopelessly inadequate and expensive public transport. Leave the highway where it is. Flooding causes BP closure

BP Richmond was forced to close its doors and pumps last Friday due to flood damage caused by last Friday’s heavy rain storm.

Water was leaking through the ceiling and owner Michael Harte, says a decision was made to close the petrol station for the day because of potential health and safety risks to staff and the public. The petrol station was reopened for business the following day.

Pipe band champs in Nelson Monique Bergman

There will be plenty of colour and sound when the Royal New Zealand Pipe Band Championships are held at Trafalgar Park this Friday and Saturday.

It is the third time the annual championships have been held in Nelson since the competition started in 1926. Local band, The Celtic Pipe Band from Stoke are this year’s organisers. President Bryce Gilchrist, says the committee of eight have worked consistently for two years to organise the large event.

There will be 45 Pipe Bands and 1300 players competing in the championships from all over Australasia. The bands from New Zealand come from as far north as Whangarei and as far south as Invercargill, and there will also be three bands competing from Australia.

Not only is Bryce involved in the organisation of the championships, he will also compete on the day with the Nelson Celtic Pipe Band. Being involved in the Nationals is a family affair with his wife Helen, secretary and drum corporal and custodian of the band and liaison officer of the organising committee and their four children playing in the band alongside him.

“Banding is very much a part of our lives, it is something we do as a family.

We are up late at night and the house is overrun with pipe band equipment but it is something we all have in common and it is one of the strong points of our band,” says Helen.

In addition to the performances at Trafalgar Park, Nelson will be treated to a

All 45 bands will compete in this march which will start at 9am on Saturday from Millers Acre, turning into Trafalgar St and ending outside Subway in Bridge St. The mayor of Nelson, Rachel Reese, will officiate, taking the salute from the Drum Major as the band marches past. At around 11.30am, the Grade Four bands will

march back to Trafalgar Park together as a massed band.

Bands may also support their drum major in a staff flourishing contest, which will be held on Saturday afternoon, with the high spinning lethal staff, always a great crowd-pleaser.

At the end of the contest all bands line up ready for a massed band performance with a final closing ceremony and contest presentations.

Despite changes to this year’s Muddy Buddy adventure fun run course, organisers say they are looking forward to a great event with loads of mud.

In order to comply with resource consent conditions imposed by Tasman District Council, the school was required to meet a number of regulations.

“We have worked really hard with the council to ensure the ecological footprint is negligible and it is great that the outcome has met everyone’s needs and the fun run will go ahead,” says Tasman School principal, Pip Wells.

In order to meet the terms of the consent, the course has been changed slightly from previous years and runners now need to cross Aporo Rd to get to the estuary, instead of going through a culvert underneath it. The road will be closed briefly for the duration of the race and the school has implemented a traffic management plan to divert traffic

Music trust band gets new uniform The Tasman Music Trust Band now has a brand new uniform, thanks to their teacher’s ingenuity and assistance from the New Zealand Music Commission.

The band, which is made up of 40 students from around the region, was in need of a uniform to perform in.

Waimea College teacher, Nick Sharpe, noticed some old New Zealand Music Month t-shirts lying around and thought they would be ideal, however there wasn’t

enough for the entire band.

So he phoned the New Zealand Music Commission who were only too happy to help and supplied the rest of the band with T-shirts.

The students, who meet every week to practice at Waimea College, were not only treated to new uniforms but also received a visit recently from a surprise international guest.

Volunteer fire fighters from several brigades came together for a training exercise last year in which a structurally damaged house was burned to the ground If it wasn’t for our volunteer fire service, the Tasman community wouldn’t function like it does. These local heroes spend their everyday lives in the office, out on the farm or with family but as soon as the fire siren sounds, they jump into action, don their uniforms and respond to save homes, lives and properties.

The New Zealand fire service relies on thousands of volunteers all over the country who donate their time and effort to help communities protect what they value. The Tasman region is lucky to have the protection of local volunteer fire brigades in Murchison, Richmond, Wakefield, Tapawera, Upper Moutere and Mapua, as well as the rural fire services based in Appleby, St Arnaud and Brightwater. Each one is a vital lifeline for the continuation of our families, schools, homes, businesses and properties.

Although volunteer fire fighters get a lot of satisfaction out of helping people and keeping their

community safe, their love of the job must be recognised and appreciated by the public. Volunteering for any organisation means sacrificing your time, and being a volunteer fire fighter is no different. Whether they’re spending time with their family or going about their everyday activities, their commitment to the community must be 100 per cent when that siren goes and they get there as soon as they can.

The decision to become a volunteer fire fighter is an important one, but if you do have an interest in being part of a volunteer brigade, the first step is making contact with your local station. Fire fighting isn’t as glamorous as it may seem from the outset; there is a lot of gear to get trained on and training is continuous, but talking to a current volunteer will help give you valuable insight into what it’s like being in the service and whether it’s for you. They bring skill sets from their occupations, they could be engineers, or they may have good practical skills around land management. They bring a different set of eyes and they know their community as well,” says assistant area commander Des Irving.

While the physical volunteer work that fire fighters undertake isn’t for everyone, those wanting to be involved in the organisation have a range of operational support roles open to them.

From traffic management and administration, to cleaning the fire station; they may not be the tasks we associate with fire service volunteers, such as freeing a driver from his car or extinguishing a fire, but everyone’s role affects the success of the regions fire service.

Efficiency is vital for the fire service and each appliance is well equipped with fire fighting equipment. From the time the pager message reaches

volunteers at home or work to the time truck has reached the scene is around 11 minutes. In a more isolated community, volunteers are especially important as there can sometimes be no one else closer than an hour away. “The community needs to look after itself, not only for fires, but for natural disasters as well,” says Des. “The fact is we only have two paid crews here, so if we were to have a natural event that requires a lot of resources, we would have to get more resources in and the paid staff will be tied up. It’s about the community being resilient and part of that resilience is having volunteers available to assist.” The fire service also has access to helicopter support, so in an isolated emergency, two attendants can be dropped on site with a cache of tools to offer assistance until further help is available. The number of medical call outs is also becoming a bigger part of the job as many

In the case of a purple event, when someone’s life is threatened, and St John can’t respond immediately themselves, a fire truck will often be sent first to cover the situation until a professional medical team can take over.

The work ethic of volunteer fire fighters is to be highly admired by their communities and without this major component within the New Zealand Fire Service, they would be unable to operate. Those who are interested in joining a volunteer brigade are greatly encouraged to do so. With more experience and a willingness to progress often results in greater responsibilities and even the chance to lead the brigade. “Volunteers are a vital and integral part of the community and without them New Zealand doesn’t function, not only for fire fighting but for a lot of the services. It’s getting harder and

harder with the demands on life to find suitable people to become volunteers, so we strongly encourage people with an inkling to make themselves known and we’ll take care of the rest,” says Des. We can also thank our local volunteers by doing our part to minimise fire risks by following home firesafety basics. “It’s been pretty dry and we’ve been fortunate on this side of the divide that we haven’t had the succession of fires they’ve had in Marlborough. It’s about keeping lawns mowed, grass down and ensuring all homes have working smoke alarms. Our preference is 10 year life smoke alarms, and if someone wants assistance putting them up, call your local fire brigade and they will come and do that for free. At the same time they’ll give you fire safety advice,” says Des. Siblings ready for trolley derby When 11 year old Daniel Edmonds finished painting his trolley, he stood back and admired his handy work.

Over his shoulder, his father Rob was admiring his own work.

After all, the Mike Pero Nelson Trolley Derby is just as much about the dads as it is the kids.

“The competition amongst dads is fierce,” says Rob. “You want to build the best trolley for your kids and there’s always a little joke at the finish line amongst the dads.”

This year Rob has been working on three trolleys, one for each of his three children.

He says it’s been a great project.

“The great thing about the trolley derby is that it’s really a dad thing. Just dad and the kids.”

Rob’s eldest son Daniel will be competing for the third time, son Luke, 7, will be taking part for the second time and for five year daughter Lydia, it will be her first trolley derby.

Rob, who is the construction manager at Kidson Construction, says two of the trolleys

have been modified and one he built from scratch, with the help of some friends.

“The engineers at work helped me out and a friend, Pete Chapman, did all the steering for us, so that certainly helped.”

All of the parts were recycled apart from the wheels.

“That’s the only thing I bought.”

The annual trolley derby will be held this Saturday on Collingwood St. The event runs from 10am to 4pm and for the first time ever, every race has a full field.

Former miners strike ‘white New sewer gold’ with water business may disrupt A couple of former West Coast miners have struck “white gold” with their premium bottled water, with even the Prime Minister giving it his seal of approval at the company’s official opening last Friday.

The E’Stel Premium Artesian Water plant has been established by brothers-in-law Andrew Strang and Wayne Herring, who were both made redundant from Solid Energy’s Stockton Mine last year. Second cousin Steve Diskin is also a founding director.

“We wanted to do it for years but it required a large outlay and start-up,’’ Andrew says.

“Each and every one of us had to be at the right place in our lives.’’

The trio have invested more than $1 million into the business and have a contract to supply up to 1000 containers a year into China, as well as deals underway with Australia, America and the Middle East.

The last six months have been a whirlwind of activity getting all the manufacturing capability and contracts in place.

They’ve already exported a couple of trial shipments and have over a million bottles stored ready for bottling to begin next week. The plant will initially employ 1015 staff on the production line but this is expected to grow as the company expands supply.

Nelson MP Nick Smith says the business fits into the region’s already-strong food export market. “This adds to the bow of the fruit and the fish that we are well-known for.”

The bottles are all manufactured onsite, starting out as a little test tube which then gets expanded into the final product.

The trio looked at different regions in which to base E’stel but Nelson came up trumps due to their family links in the area, good access to the port and the ability to extract water from a specially-drilled 1km deep bore in the Waimea Plains.

Meanwhile, their former mining colleagues are watching with interest.

“The boys love hearing about it,’’ Andrew says. “This is our white gold.’’

A new sewer will be installed in Richmond from this week.

Donaldson Civil will do the work, putting in the 150mm diameter PVC sewer main and the manhole structures that go with it.

Work started on the sewer in William St on Monday and will progress across Hill St and then Churchill Ave. The TDC project is due to be finished by the end of April. There will be some parking restrictions on the road, says the TDC. “Traffic will be controlled through the work site using traffic lights with extra controls in place for pedestrians. These may be slightly different to what are normally used so please be aware,” says a TDC spokesperson.

“Residents will be kept informed throughout the construction period however, people are also welcome to make contact for further information on this project.”

Theme needed for masked parade Grandmother given her own Organisers of the Nelson Arts Festival are asking for public submissions for theme ideas for this year’s Masked Parade.

The winning submission will also get the chance to have their group lead the front of the parade and see their theme come to life.

Festival’s team leader, Axel de Maupeou, says the winning theme will allow for people’s imagination to run wild when creating their masks.

“We want people to come up with an idea that will result in a Masked Parade that is full of bold, colourful and unique masks and costumes that this

The annual battle of what to buy your mum for her birthday is something a lot of people struggle with, but a pair of Nelson sisters has come up trumps – giving their art-loving mother her own solo exhibition.

Jean Jackson has always loved painting but it’s only been in retirement that the Stoke grandmother has really made it her passion.

She’s exhibited her artwork with the Tasman Visual Art Group and is also a member of the Suter Art Society and Art Group Nelson, but this will be her first solo exhibition. She says it was a shock. “The girls were apparently mulling it over with Barry [Jean’s husband]

and they knew it was something that I’d always wanted to do, so I was delighted when they surprised me for my birthday.”

Jean’s daughters arranged for the exhibition to be in the Maitai Room at Trailways Hotel this Saturday, March 14. Jean says it’s been a rush to get everything organised but fortunately she has plenty of artwork. “We only had three weeks to get it all sorted but I’ve been doing a lot of painting since Christmas, so we’ll have 36 pieces there and many of them will be new.”

Jean describes her art as “realism, bordering on fine art”.

The exhibition will be held from 10am to 4pm.

Footballers off to mix it with the best Simon Bloomberg

A team of talented young soccer players from around the Nelson region will have an early start to the season when they head to Auckland for the Auckland City Football Club Under-17 Youth tournament.

And the Paul Cousins-coached Richmond AFC Challengers is expecting a tough start to the tournament, that runs from March

20-22, when they meet a team from New Caledonia in the first round of pool play.

There are 32 boys teams and 24 girls teams in the tournament with the top two teams in each pool qualifying for the premier section.

“No one knows how good the New Caledonian team will be, but I expect they will be very good,” Paul says.

“We also have Auckland City Central in

our pool so it’s going to be hard to qualify for the top section.

“We reached the quarter final of the bowls last year and lost on penalties. I’d like to think we can reach the semis of the bowl this year.”

Paul says the team has been training as a squad since mid-January and will have had three lead-up games before it heads to Auckland. It played against a mixed team

last week and was to play a Nelson College team on Tuesday and the Richmond 1st XI on Friday.

Paul says the team has some really talented young players who range in age from 14 to 17.

“It’s a great opportunity for them. They’ll be playing against the best teams from around the country and there will be scouts out there looking around.”

Biggest Nelson ‘Tryathlon’ yet A new event record was set for the Nelson Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon held last weekend, with over 1800 kids aged between seven to 15 years taking part in the largest ever children’s event in Nelson.

After last week’s heavy rain, the skies cleared for perfect racing conditions at Tahunanui as kids lined up on the beach in readiness for their sprint into the sea. Parents, grandparents and friends cheered on children of all fitness levels as they participated in a 50 to 200 metre swim, four to eight kilometre bike ride and a one and a half kilometre run.

,along with local sporting heroes, Black Sticks women’s hockey team captain, Anita Punt and Nelson Giants basketballer Sam Dempster, joined in the fun by congratulating the kids and handing out medals at the finish line. The organisation of the event was a winner also, with plenty of marshals on hand ensuring the day ran smoothly for both kids and parents.

The event, which is in its 23rd year, is all about encouraging kids to get active in a fun environment and is the world’s largest triathlon series for under 16s as certified by the International Triathlon Union. It continues to be a rite-of-passage for many kids across our region.

Herbal medicine has been used across the globe safely and effectively for more than 3000 years, and Richmond residents can now access it right on their doorsteps.

One of the country’s most experienced and educated herbalists, Carole Fisher, has joined the Hardy’s Richmond team to work alongside qualified herbalist and naturopath Anna Millard.

Carole, who has a Post-Graduate Diploma in Public Health and is studying for a PhD in addition to her medical herbalist training, says it is important people visit herbalists who are properly trained and professionally registered. “A properly qualified medical herbalist has trained for a minimum of three years to gain a full understanding of the way herbs can be used, why they work and most importantly how to use them safely. A large number of modern drugs are based on herbs and their medicinal properties are increasingly being scientifically validated. Herbs can work uniquely to correct imbalances and enhance the body’s ability to maintain good health.” Carole Fisher has been practising herbal medicine for 22 years. She trained in the United Kingdom and has taught at various institutes around New Zealand and has written two herbal textbooks which are used around the world.

Anna, who gained a Bachelor of Natural Medicine 2013, says proper training teaches the science behind how the body works and what happens when things go wrong. “This knowledge allows us to combine a number of herbs together which will treat the cause of the problems, as well as the symptoms. Herbalists are trained to know if there are herbs that cannot be taken with prescribed medication and all treatment is closely supervised to ensure it is appropriate, safe and of benefit,” she says. Anna offers a compassionate and analytical approach when helping her patients resolve their health issues; and it is her intention to not only assist healing but also to provide people with information in relation to their own health concerns. A first consultation will last around an hour, while follow-up consultations are half an hour long, allowing for in-depth analysis of health issues. “Because a herbalist takes a thorough case history, a medicine can be formulated for your individual requirements,” Fisher says. Treatment plans also take into account a person’s particular lifestyle, to address factors like diet and stress.

Waimea swimmer smashes personal best by 26 seconds Saturday’s stormy weather was challenging for some at the Tasman Swim Club meet at Nayland Pool, however a dozen swimmers managed to smash their personal best times by 10 or more seconds at the last outdoor meet of the season.

Sierra Thomas (11 years, Waimea Intermediate) from Tasman Swim Club achieved the largest personal best time by taking 26 seconds off her previous time in the 800m freestyle event. She also chopped her 400m individual medley time by 23 seconds.

Oliver Stark (13, Nelson College) from Nelson South Swim Club also had a great swim in the 800m freestyle event taking 25 seconds off his previous best time, and achieved five personal best times out of seven events.

Bree Anderson and Emma Fox (both 12 of Waimea Intermediate) from Tasman took 22 seconds off their 800m freestyle times. Also, in the 800m freestyle was a 15 second personal best for Maya Lewis

A contingent of Nelson triathletes had a big day at the office on Saturday competing in the Kelloggs Nutri-Grain New Zealand Ironman but for two of them the hard work has only just started.

Eileen Searle and Wayne Leighton headed the Nelson assault on the 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42.2km run by finishing in second and third respectively in their F50-54 and M55-59 age groups to qualify for the world champs in Kona, Hawaii in October.

Although both athletes jumped at the chance to perform in the biggest and toughest Ironman event in the world, they also knew what they are letting themselves in for.

“I was looking forward to a break after Taupo but now I’ll have to keep training,” Wayne says.

“It’s going to be a long, hard winter.”

It was a top result for Wayne in his first Ironman and he conceded he was surprised to finish third after recording a fast 10hr 35min 23sec.

“I had no idea how I would go because running a marathon after cycling 180km is such a big unknown. I was aiming for a top 10 finish and would have been happy with that but I surprised myself ” In contrast, Eileen was expected to go close to qualifying for Kona after two impressive wins in Challenge Wanaka.

But it was still a tough race for Eileen who battled in all three stages before finishing in 11hr 34min 47sec.

“I didn’t feel good at any stage. I got nauseous in the last 20km of the cycle and struggled on the run which is normally my strength.

“I also got knocked around by the wind so it was a real test – it was mind over matter that got me to the finish.”

Nelson’s Donna Shaw and Mark Corlett also had to find extra resolve on the run with both suffering from severe cramping.

However, they managed to keep going finishing one second apart in 11hr 50min 29sec and 11hr 50min 30sec to improve on their personal bests by over 40 minutes. Donna finished fourth in her F44-49 age group.

“The run was awful – I had bad cramping for 42km,” Donna says. “I had sore feet too and changed my shoes at 21km which turned out to be a mistake because when I sat down everything seized up.”

Donna and Mark attributed their big improvement in time to following a training programme by coach Graham O’Grady which placed an emphasis on “quality not quantity.

Richard Bamfield produced a super-fast cycle leg of 5hr 26min to finish in 10hr 44min 26sec while Eric Wylde impressed in his first Ironman with a time of 11hr 6min 2sec.

Richard also found some extra speed in the swim to complete the 3.8km in 1hr 14min 31 sec almost 20 minutes faster than he swam last year.

Nathan Chippendale also made a good Ironman debut finishing in 11hr 24min 23sec.

‘Chips’ started with a 1hr 9min 6sec swim and 5hr 57min 1sec cycle before enjoying a 4hr 8min 40sec marathon.

“I enjoyed the experience. I didn’t know what to expect or how hard to go so I just made sure I finished and enjoyed it.”

Wayne Corbett finished in 11hr 51min 40min in his Ironman debut to secure family bragging rights beating his son Tim who finished in 13hr 27min 8sec.

Simon Bloomberg finished fourth in his M5559 age group in 10hr 39min 1sec after a good swim and cycle and steady run.

Reflecting on Life’s Journey

we visited the Sacre-coeur (Basilica of the Sacred Heart) in Paris after we were just married. I had never been to church but I was baptised in our local Baptist church some time later. We felt it later when we opened our own pharmacy after working for my father for ten years. We felt it as my father was dying from prostrate cancer and we made the decision to sell our pharmacy so we could spend the last months with him. After his death we emigrated to New Zealand. Today Carol wrote this poem for me

It’s Thursday morning 12th February 2015 , and we are driving back to Nelson via Christchurch having left our daughter Sally at Dunedin - at the prestigious Carrington College no less. I was contemplating my navel as you do while driving. I was smugly thinking mission accomplished my two offspring at university.

Sally is studying health science with Andrew, a permanent student, studying medicine, now its up to them, job done! As if we can take all the credit for their achievements. I said to Carol, “Just you and me then, kid.” I was feeling something was wrong but could not put a finger on it, other than it was a slightly empty, unfulfilled feeling.

We are happy with our new independence. We have had these other feelings before - kairos moments.

(Kairos is a word from ancient Greek which means the right or the supreme moment.) In the church it is also used to talk about a moment in time when the Holy Spirit draws near to do a special work in and through a person or group. We first felt it when

… but life can be cruel and life goes on, for some it’s the end for others just begun.

I need you now and needed you then No question of how, no question of when.

So follow your dreams let the first page open, I will be there always, caring and hoping.

Take the path up the hill or the path through the vale.

They will be both be a challenge and you might even fail.

Trustee Position: Melrose Society - Nelson The Colonel Noel Percy Adams Trust (Melrose) Society was formed in 1974 when the house and grounds were taken over by Nelson City Council. The Trust is a registered charitable, ‘notfor-profit’ incorporated society comprised entirely of a volunteer trustee’s as well as ‘Friends of Melrose,’ which are focused on the preservation and promotion of Melrose House and Gardens. Long Term Plan Consultation Document released Tasman District Council has released its Consultation Document to begin the public consultation phase of the Long Term Plan process. People are now invited to have their say on any aspect of the issues contained in the Consultation Document and on the proposals and policies outlined below.

As well as the Consultation Document there are a number of other documents and policies that the Council is consulting on which support the Consultation Document: • Schedule of Charges • Policy for Early Payment of Rates in the Current Financial Year • Revenue & Financing Policy • Development Contributions Policy • Funding Impact Statement • Rates Remissions Policy • Policy on Rate Relief for Māori Freehold Land • Statement on fostering Māori participation in Council decision-making Consultation Document for the Long Term Plan 2015-2025 The Consultation Document was approved for public consultation by the Council at its meeting on 5 March 2015.

Changes to the Local Government Act 2002 now require local authorities to produce a Consultation Document instead of a Draft Long Term Plan. The Consultation Document, identifies the big issues and key options that will influence the Council’s decisions as it plans its budgets and activities for the next 10 years.

There are also a range documents that went into the development of this Consultation Document and support the Long Term Plan 2015-2025.
