Nelson, Trafalgar Centre This weekend 14 & 15 April

Women’s Lifestyle Expo draws hundreds of stall holders The Women’s Lifestyle Expo returning to Nelson this weekend is held nationwide but the Expo also prides itself on having the best of the local companies from each region exhibiting beside the national companies. Renee Murray from Expo Organisers, Peacock Promotions, says the Expo is so popular because of the mix of exhibitors we have. “For example small business owners that work from home selling homemade crafts exhibit beside companies like Air NZ Holidays. This mix means we appeal to all ages and types of women because there really is something for everyone. Many of our exhibitors also only sell from online stores so the Expo is a great platform for them to showcase their products and visitors can check out their goods up close.” One of the many local companies looking forward to exhibiting at the Expo is Kelly More from More2 U who will be promoting her Mad Millie Cheese Mak-

ing Kits and new pizza ovens. You can find out how these ovens work and also see a Mozzarella stretching demonstration at 1.30 each day in the Expo Demonstration Zone. Kelly’s shop stocks Mad Millie Kits including cheese, pizza, pasta and preserving kits plus they offer after great sales support, technical advice as well as creative food ideas and recipes. Talk to Kelly at the Expo to sample her cheese and find out how you can make your own cheese at a hands-on cheese making workshop held a few days after the Expo. With around one hundred companies involved this year Renee Murray says “you are assured of a great day out. Bring your friends, mothers or daughters or simply enjoy a day to spoil yourself.” For more details please see www.expos. co.nz or to keep in touch with all the Expo news join the Expo’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/WomensLifestyleExpo.

Fair traffic issues will be sorted Phillip Rollo Organisers of the hugely popular Mapua Easter Fair are urging people to take alternative routes to the fair next year, following a near record attendance leaving traffic travelling at a slow pace from the Appleby Highway. Lisa Dunn, co-organiser of the event, says 16,000 people went through the gate, raising $41,000 for school and playcentre. The attendance figures were close to record highs for the event, being held for the 30th year at the Mapua Domain on Sunday. But Lisa says people should take alternative routes next year, to help the flow of traffic at peak times. They should also arrive earlier in the morning. “Day to day we’re a small village of 1700 people. So when ten times the number of your community arrive in six hours, it has

a huge impact,” she says. Some event goers drove to Rabbit Island to catch the Flat Bottom Ferry to Mapua. Lisa encouraged more people to take that option next year, or alternatively drive through the Moutere Highway. “There’s certainly a bottleneck from between 11am and 1pm.” Sixteen thousand people visited the fair in 2010. Lisa says the traffic situation has improved since then and a traffic strategy is put in place prior to the event with the New Zealand Transport Agency, Tasman District Council and Nelson Police. “With the change in the bypass you’d think it would be an easier route, but it’s something we’ll have to talk about. Everyone wants to make it as smooth as possible.” But overall the Easter fair was another big success with 340 different stalls under perfect Nelson weather. “We’re really thrilled.”

Tapawera hunters pig out Saturday night wasn’t about the one that got away. Instead, it was all about the biggest boar they managed to bring home. Tapawera Rugby Club hosted their annual boar hunt and Willie Andrew’s 74.5 kilogram boar took the top honours. Willie was clearly stoked with his catch, but says his hunt was probably the shortest. “To be honest I was out there for two minutes,” he says. “It wasn’t much effort at all. I just gutted it, dragged it out and went home. It was a lucky one I think.” Willie says it was the biggest boar he has ever caught. He usually goes hunting twice a week. The rules of the hunt were simple. They had 48 hours to find the heaviest boar from anywhere between Murchison and Nelson. Organisers of the Tapawera Rugby Club’s Boar Hunt say it was more quality over quanitity this year, with boars, stags and goats coming at whopping weights during the 48 hour hunting competition that raises a considerable amount of the team’s annual funds. “There’s probably less pigs than last year but the pigs that are here are much bigger and fatter,” says Peter Lyall. “We had a lot of people here that aren’t hunters but they Willie Andrew and Amanda Fishburn with the 74.5kg boar they caught at the still come along and show Tapawera Rugby Club’s Boar Hunt over the weekend. A cleanout of ten willow trees from Richmond’s Bill Wilkes Reserve has left residents upset and angry. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Tree removal angers nearby residents Phillip Rollo The Tasman District Council has ordered ten of the willow trees in the Bill Wilkes Reserve to be removed, angering users of the popular park. Peter Cash walks his dog through the reserve every day and has hit out at Tasman District Council for “ruining” the park. “I’m not very happy about it at all,” he says. “They said it’s to do with the drainage and they reckon the twigs and branchs come off and block up the drain. Well weeping willows don’t shed the branches or twigs. They come round and cut them once a year. They’re perfectly healthy trees and I’m really livid about it.” Peter says it is not just about having some shade in the summer, but that the reserve will look a

“bloody eyesore” without them. “We all pay rates and everything and it’s just a bloody mess.” Peter says feedback amongst the neighbourhood and been equally negative and he was going to spend the weekend door knocking to get further opinion. Bill Wilkes Reserve is on Hunter Ave and runs through to Washbourn Drive. But Tasman District Council utilities asset engineer Robert Workman reiterated that the ten 30 year old willow trees were removed because of drainage issues, saying that they had begun to wilt in their age and were binding against each other. “The main reason is to prevent the blocking of the outlet screens from the detention dam,” he says. “We’ve concentrated on taking the first line of trees close to that inlet drain out.”

The Waimea Sheep Dog Trial club is gearing up for its annual dog trial competition. Held in April every year, the competition will be held at a farm on Higgins Rd in Wakefield from April 19. Dog trials set for Wakefield

Phillip Rollo Work has begun on a new crematorium at the Gardens of the World propety in Hope, following a blessing of the ground ceremony early yesterday morning. Tasman District Council gave funeral director and Gardens of the World owner Francis Day consent to go ahead with the gas-fired crematorium, before some neighbours opposed the idea, taking it to the environment court early last year. But with the green light, Tasman District Council kaumatua Andy Joseph blessed the ground at 7am yesterday morning with contractors starting work on the site directly after. “It’s a blessing to be able to get underway. It’s been a long journey. Today is the day is starts,” says Francis. “Forty years ago we wanted to put one in Richmond and this will be a really special area for all of Nelson.” Construction is expected to take 25 weeks on the “state of the art, modern” crematorium. While the process has been both lengthy and costly, he says going through the environment court did have one positive; getting all of the correct information to the public. Although the crematorium is on the same property as Gardens of the World, it will be a completely different entity. Other crematoriums are based in Wakapuaka and Motueka. Francis is a shareholder in the company that has been running the Motueka site for the past 30 years.

Just a thought Well another holiday weekend has come and gone. Hopefully you were able to chill out, recharge tired batteries, catch up with families and friends, treat yourself to a trip away, a meal out, a movie. Yes we long for holidays don’t we. But maybe we forget that the word ‘holiday’ is derived from the notion of ‘Holy Day,’ and originally referred only to special religious days, such as Easter and Christmas. How times have changed. Murchison Museum’s Gr wing Things military month ThisksTips

With Robyn Hollis

The community of Murchison has again supported their museum by loaning their military treasures to create another interesting display for the month of April. Along with artefacts the museum already holds, most of the wars have been covered including a medal from the Boer War, post cards home and field glasses from WWI, medals, photos and a field cooker from

WW II, plus much more. This is the third display at the museum since a rugby display during the 2011 Rugby World Cup and the second big display involving the wider community’s items. The display will continue for the month of April finishing after ANZAC Day. The museum is open from 11am to 3pm and entry is by donation

THE ONLY THING LEFT GREEN

What a great week we had – Johnno had his fill of the Aussie surf and I did a really grand impersonation of a “beached whale” for two days or so before the need to move and spend money drove me from the beach. Weather was excellent, warm and sunny and the break was really good for us both. Spent last weekend being a Nana again so that was also very exciting – boy – they really grow fast these little people.

I wonder why it is that when you are home and waiting for veges to produce you can be looking daily for some fruit, beans or a stray courgette to pop in the pot, and then the week you go away everything (including the weeds) decides to grow at an amazing pace. We came back to two giant courgettes – or zucchini, or even in one case a marrow, and have been eating them for a week stuffed with lamb mince, stir-fried with ginger and garlic, and there was still enough to make into a delicious courgette and apple relish. Oh, all right I will give you the recipe! Courgette and Apple Relish 750 g courgette, grated 1 1/2 tbsp sea salt 600 g apples, peeled and chopped (I used Eve as it is a sweet apple) 4 med onions peeled and chopped 250 g raisins, chopped 150 g brown sugar 500 ml white wine vinegar 1/2 tsp garam masala 1/2 tsp ground coriander 1/2 tsp turmeric Place courgette in a colander or sieve, sprinkle with salt and stand for two hours. Rinse under cold water and drain on absorbent paper or through a sieve. Combine courgettes, apples, onions, raisins and vinegar in a large saucepan. Bring to the boil and simmer, covered for about 20 minutes or until the mixture is pulpy. Stir in the sugar and spices and bring to the boil stirring until the sugar is dissolved. About 20minutes or until mixture is thick. Pour into hot sterilised jars and seal when cold. This recipe is from one of my favourite books called “Grow it-Cook it” and Sally is happy for me to pass on some of her tips and recipes.

• By now you should be well worn out, as the Easter break is a big one in a gardeners life. Autumn is a great time to plant all manner of things both in the flower and the vege garden. • There is still time to plant broad beans, carrots, cauli, brussel sprouts, winter lettuce (mizuna is a good one) cabbage and silverbeet. • In the flower garden you can sow alyssun, calendulas (winter marigolds), delphiniums, foxgloves, hollyhocks, lupins, pansies, poppies and viola to name a few. • It is now the time to sow new lawns, you have until about the end of May if it stays warm. It is also time to fertilise established lawns (I recommend Scotts Lawnbuilder) and check for bare patches which can be a sign of grass grubs feeding on the roots. Applications of diazinon granules (Lawn and Soil guard, No Insects Lawnguard Prills, or Soil Insect killer are a few available). Water well after applying to get the poison down to where the grubs are, or apply before rain. • Give hedges a final trim this month before winter and check for mites and mealy bug in some (use a spraying oil – Neem or Conqueror oil will work here) and psyllids in some of the pittosporum varieties. Trimming hedges removes the affected shoots and subsequent new growth should be relatively healthy. • It is also time to plant strawberries. If you plant in April you should be picking fruit in November. They need an open sunny spot with lots of well rotted compost and are best planted into ridges or raised beds as they need good drainage. Strawberries also do well in containers and just need a good potting mix and extra food as they start to set fruit. Check your local garden centre for available varieties. Hope you all had a great Easter – I was making quince jelly for most of it but we did get the magnolia planted!

Waimea downed at the death Phillip Rollo

Good Friday was anything but for Waimea Old Boys. Usually when New World Huia comes to town it spells success for the home side. The opening round of this season’s Car Company division one rugby competition was different, for the obvious reasons. Going into the final two minutes, Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys looked to have a hold on their Motueka opposition with the score at 24-20. Before a late try in the dying stages made sure all three points were heading the way of Huia. The full

time score of 27-24 did reflect the majority of the game as Waimea Old Boys failed to gain any sort of superiority up front. Captain Sam Prattley was on form, but the lineout struggled more than once. Halfback Kaide Whiting returned from Scotland to kick Waimea Old Boys into the lead in the opening ten minutes. He landed two penalties in quick succession to hold onto a six point buffer before Huia replied with a try and a penalty of their own. Whatever was said at the halftime whistle paid dividends for Waimea Old Boys. Sam set the example and it wasn’t long before the Crusaders wider training squad mem-

SG

ber crossed over near the posts for their first try of the season. Kaide then missed the conversion from in front. Josh Rutledge showed his pace on the ball when he scored the team’s second try following a break from centre James Lowe. James made a bustling run when he was put into a gap by first five-eight Carl Smith. Kaide made no mistake from the tee this time round putting Waimea in the lead by five points. Number eight Ben Eder was menacing on defence, but not even the tireless loose forward could stop Huia’s second try. Kaide looked to have given Waimea Old

Boys the victory with a late brace of penalties. But when the Waimea Old Boys line didn’t rush up together, a gap was found and Huia scored right under the posts with time all but up on the clock, stealing the game at the end. The senior A side will play ENZA Riwaka at Jubilee Park in the next round this Saturday. The game kicks off at 3pm. The Waimea Old Boys second division side got off to the best possible start in their campaign, putting away Huia 3715. Luke Thelin making the most of open space to score a brace of tries. The B’s will play Nelson at Neale Park.

Siblings inline for Australian test

Lloyd Jones, Tony Knudsen, Richard Ross and Jordan Keir at Repco Richmond will be holding a sausage sizzle to help fundraise for Waimea Old Boys JAB Rugby. The sausage sizzle will be held this Saturday from 11am to 3pm, so if you are heading down to the game, make sure you stop off at Repco on Gladestone Rd on your way there. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

They both have much different approaches about representing New Zealand at inline hockey, but Richmond brothers Josh and Devon Stove are raring to go ahead of this weekend’s five match series in their respective age brackets. Josh, 16, has been named as the assistant captain for the New Zealand 16 and Under side. This is the third year the Nelson College student will represent New Zealand. He will, again, be looking to cement his spot in the side for future tournaments, including the Junior Olympics which will be held in the United States. The location of the Junior Olympics also plays some significance as Josh is looking to join the pro ranks once he has left school and it will be his first chance to check out life in USA. “So it’s about playing well this year and just making sure I cement a place when that team gets named,” says Josh. He says professional inline hockey players can get paid around US$70,000 a season, so there would be no pressure to try out for ice hockey. “I want to go over after Year 13, so I need to make sure I’m in that squad for the Junior Olympics.” His younger brother Devon has been selected in the first ever New Zealand 12 and Under squad. The 12 year old Waimea Intermediate School student says his focus is just on one thing: “Winning,” he says. “I want a gold medal.” He will also be assistant captain. Both teams will play Australia five times.

Mountain bikers taste success at nationals Scott Barr is Waimea College’s latest national champion, after the mountain biker lead a group of five cyclists to the New Zealand Secondary School Championship in Levin last week. All of the cyclists made the top ten in New Zealand, with all but one of them making it on the podium at some stage throughout the tournament, stretching Waimea College’s outstanding success on the bike. Scott took out the cross country and hill climb in the Under-15 boys catergory. Combined with his 10th place in the downhill section, the results tallied together made Scott the overall champion. Caitlin Holmes came close to matching

his efforts in the Under-19 girls section, but a broken chain ruined her chances, despite running three kilometers with it next to her. She won the downhill and was second in the hill climb to finish second overall. DJ Holmes was runner up in the Under-15 boys section following a second place in the downhill and a tenth in the cross country and an 11th placing in the hill climb. Ben Karalus won the Under-15 boys downhill and was third overall. Henry Jaine picked up two top ten fin- SUCCESS: Waimea College sent five mountain bikers to the New Zealand Secondary ishes in the Under-17 boys to finish tenth School Mountain Biking Championship in Levin last week. Youngsters get stuck into pre-season The football season will officially kick off this weekend, but some of the region’s top young players made sure they had a head start, competing in a pre-season tournament hosted by Richmond Athletic over the long weekend. The club usually hosts an annual pre-season tournament for senior clubs, but with Easter ruling out the majority of the city’s players, it was four youth teams that made the most of a free weekend as 60 junior players competed over the two days.

Richmond Athletic entered two teams, the Nike Cup side and an Under-17 team. They both played against FC Nelson’s Nike Cup side and the visiting Wellington Tornadoes team that features four local players in their ranks, including Mat Todd-Smith, Sam Wilson, Zac Muir and James Peters. FC Nelson won the tournament going through undefeated over the two days, second was the Wellington Tornadoes. The two Richmond teams drew against each other.

Tasman Resource Management Plan

Street Closures – Anzac Day

Proposed Plan Changes 32 to 36

For the purpose of enabling ANZAC Day Services and Parades, the following sections of roads will be closed to ordinary vehicular traffic on Wednesday 25 April 2012 for the times indicated below.

Council has prepared amendments to the Tasman Resource Management Plan, known as the following: Proposed Plan Change 32: Wall Offset – Residential Zone This Change deletes the requirement for an offset in the alignment of walls longer than 15 metres, of dwellings and other buildings in the Residential Zone. This Change has no immediate legal effect. Proposed Plan Change 33: Minor Changes to Recreation, Open Space and Conservation Zones This Change amends the zoning of some small parcels of land at Riwaka, Richmond, Wakefield and East Takaka where inappropriate Recreation, Open Space and Conservation zoning has occurred. This Change has no immediate legal effect. Proposed Plan Change 34: Fire Risk Management for New Dwellings This Change amends provisions for managing fire risk in rural areas where there is no water reticulation. The requirements for having sufficient stored water near any new dwelling are now more demanding, however Council has also provided for alternative fire protection options including, in particular, home sprinkler systems, but also nearby dams or pools. This Change has no immediate legal effect. Proposed Plan Changes 35 & 36: Water Metering These Changes amend water metering requirements to ensure they are consistent with the national regulations. Submissions Any person may make a submission on any part of any of the proposed Changes. Submissions can be sent to the Manager Policy, Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond 7050 to be accepted by Council for a period closing at 4.00 pm on Thursday 3 May 2012. Forms for making submissions are available as indicated below under “Availability of Proposed Changes”. Submissions must be in writing, clearly indicating support or opposition to the provisions, the decision that the submitter wishes the Council to make (with reasons), whether or not the submitter wishes to be heard in support of the submission and an address for service or contact address. Consideration of Proposed Changes After submissions have closed, Council will publish a summary of all decisions requested by submitters. There will be a further period of 10 working days within which further submissions in support of or opposition to those submissions made may be sent to Council. Council will then hold hearings on all submissions and all submitters may be heard. After the Council considers the submissions and makes its decisions, any submitter who is not satisfied with the decision has the right of appeal to the Environment Court. Availability of Proposed Changes The proposed amendments are available to view at Council’s Richmond office, Motueka and Takaka service centres or to access online (www.tasman.govt.nz) under ‘Changes and Variations’ via ‘Policy’, ‘Resource Management Plan’. Submission forms are also available. For more information or advice on these amendments, please contact Rose Biss Ph. 03 543 8421 Email rose.biss@tasman.govt.nz, Neil Jackson Ph. 03 543 88485 Email neil.jackson@tasman.govt.nz or Mary-Anne Baker Ph. 03 543 8486 Email mary-anne.baker@tasman.govt.nz Update Pages to the Plan Update No. 43 to the Plan, including all amendments to the text as a result of the proposed Change, will be available as soon as possible. For enquiries concerning the update or availability of the Plan, please contact Pam Meadows Ph. 03 543 8581 Email pam.meadows@tasman.govt.nz or one of the Customer Services staff.

community notices New Zealand Red Cross – Community Visitor Service VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Community Visitors Service helps establish links between people living in an aged care facility and their local community. The objective of the Service is to improve the quality of life of residents in aged care facilities who have limited family and social contact. A Community Visitor befriends a resident of an aged care facility, who has been identified by the facility, as being lonely or at risk of isolation. A community visitor is a person who sets aside time, usually for 1-2 hours per week, to visit and befriend a resident of an aged care facility. If this sounds like you or you require further information please contact Amy on Ph. 03 546 5012 or Email: amy.wilson@redcross.org.nz HELP YOUR COMMUNITY TODAY.

Keep Richmond Beautiful (KRB) AGM 11 April 2012 at 3.00 pm, Tasman District Council Chambers, Queen Street, Richmond The reason for this meeting is that KRB has changed the date for the end of its financial year to 31 March (from 30 June) so the past ‘year’ was only 6 months - this means it will not have an Annual Report this year (the next will be this time in 2013). The purpose of this AGM is to elect officers and committee and present the financial statement to 31 March 2012. Guest speaker - David Sissons.

Important Reminder to all Water Permit Consent Holders subject to Water Meter Returns Council’s Compliance Officer, Daryl Page, reminds consent holders that the requirement for water meter returns runs until Monday 30 April 2012. Daryl advises that if you cease water use before 30 April 2012 you must tell Council and this can be used as your final reading for the season. Only then can the requirement for further returns be removed. Otherwise, returns are required by 4.00 pm Wednesday. Missing or late returns may result in Council staff reading the meter at a cost to the consent holder of $200.00. Council takes this opportunity to thank those consent holders who make their returns on time. Accurate and timely water meter returns are key components of the water metering project.
