Pedestrian access on Queen St hampered further Emily Beaumont As Richmond’s Queen St upgrade expands, pedestrian opportunities to cross the road have become further restricted. From Sundial Square to the Tasman District Council offices, pedestrians are unable to cross the street. Retailers and shoppers alike are looking forward to the end of the month when the street should be completed from Lower Queen Street to the Mall. While the idea of providing a crossing point was bandied about, Tasman District Council’s community relations manager Chris Choat says there are valid reasons why this would be impractical. “Access through the site was considered in the initial planning phase but, as has been proved through the job, the scale, use and movement of heavy machinery and the nature of the worksite made access too risky,” says Chris. Vehicular access to the Warehouse and Kmart carpark is temporarily unavailable via Queen St, access is obtained through Talbot St. The upgrade is still on track to be finished by the end of May.

More than 300 Brightwater school students turned up at 7 am on Tuesday to see Fonterra Ambassador and former All Blacks captain Richie McCaw fly in with his chopper to do the milk run. The school submitted a video,

created by some of the students, to the Fonterra ‘Richie’s Milk Run’ promotion. Brightwater school ultimately won the surprise fifth visit, after securing the most number of votes on Facebook. Richie McCaw said he was really excited for the opportunity to do the ‘Richie’s Milk Run’. “It has

just been great to see the looks on the kids’ faces, that’s the best bit. It was pretty touch and go with the weather this morning, if we could fly or not, but I’m stoked we did. I would’ve been pretty disappointed if I couldn’t do it that way.” Fonterra ‘Milk for Schools’ team member Tracey Fleming says,

“it’s amazing what one man can do, and how he can bring a community together like this.” Brightwater school had 352 nominations, this was the highest nomination rate per head. “This school was streets ahead of the others in the public voting. The community response was overwhelming,” says Richie.

Kohatu gets a green light Emily Beaumont Reporter

Kohatu Park Trust received the golden egg this Easter with the commitment of $300,000 from the Tasman District Council. The trust is developing a motorsport and adventure park accessed via Olivers Rd near Tapawera, and these funds are hoped to pave the way for further funding opportunities to develop the Kohatu Park site. With limited adventure and motorsport facilities currently in the area, this development would benefit central New Zealand and the local community. The $300,000 from the

Motueka Valley Highway junction, a necessary re-

quirement for the trust’s resource consent. Chairperson and driving force behind the park, Garry Adcock, says “this is a wonderful result, and thanks must go to the councillors and staff at Tasman District Council for their continuing support over the last ten years. The strong community support for our project across the area has undoubtedly also helped our cause.” A number of civil contractors from Nelson to Reefton are generously donating time, materials, plant and equipment to complete the junction’s work. With detailed planning underway, the trust hopes work on the upgrade will begin in a matter of weeks.

Quarry back in action Emily Beaumont Reinstatement works began this week at the Downer-operated quarry on Staplegrove Farm in Waimea West, and they’re anticipated to be completed in May, says Downer’s South Island general manager Scott Ford. Work at the quarry was halted late last year after elevated levels of nickel, lead, chromium and other chemicals were found in the soil used to backfill the site. The Tasman District Council placed the property on the Hazardous Activities and Industries List (HAIL) register on September 15, 2017, resulting in Downer’s application to renew its resource consent

being put on hold. “Before applying for a new consent, Downer will satisfy the requirements of the reinstatement works on the existing Staplegrove Farm consented site,” says Scott. Clean, screened, backfill material from Bartlett’s Alluvial Quarry will be imported for use and any non-compliant material which is exposed as a result of the reinstatement preparation works will be removed from site. Oversized hardfill material will be re-processed for use as hardfill. Site tests required by the TDC’s consent requirements have all been completed and results have met requirements set by the TDC, says Scott.

Richmond woman Ciara Halkett went to great heights on April 1 to increase awareness and raise funds toward epilepsy. Leaping from a Pilatus Porter, 16,500 feet above Motueka at Skydive Abel Tasman, Ciara was joined by seven others taking part in her and her mother’s initiative, ‘Jump for John’. John is Ciara’s big brother who passed away in their native Ireland, July 2017, after suffering a major epileptic fit in his sleep. “It was very sudden and very unexpected,” says Ciara. Scarring from an operation to remove a brain tumour that John developed as a child resulted in epilepsy for the once “bubbly and out-going” Irishman. As John’s age increased so to did the epileptic fits, and his medication caused such a change in his personality that he opted to discontinue their use in the time leading up to his death. The siblings last got together in January 2017 for Ciara’s New Zealand wedding at Nelson’s Founders Park. It would be the family’s final big gathering before John’s tragic passing that July. “Since John had done and really loved a couple of skydives in

Waimea Inlet gets a clean-up

Free workshops for Richmond retailers

Amy Russ Waimea Inlet Forum teamed up with Keep Richmond Beautiful and Forest and Bird over the weekend, for a joint effort beach clean-up. A total of 46 volunteers showed up on the day and between the three groups they divided up the coastline, from Mapua around to the Honest Lawyer, and set about the task at hand. Gillian Pollock of Forest and Bird had the idea of cleaning up the Waimea Inlet when she found out that Department of Conservation were no longer sponsoring the event, formerly called Big Beach Clean-up. Gillian, whose team cleaned from the end of Beach Road to Rough Island Bridge, says her team collected 13 bags in all from the cycleway areas. Ron Argue, chairperson of Keep Richmond Beautiful, says his team collected 2 trailer loads of rubbish, including a sizeable nylon tent and a lawnmower catcher. “What we really noticed amongst lots of other plastic was big quantities of white polystyrene. We picked up down to matchbox size, but that left a lot of smaller pieces.” Waimea Inlet Forum voluntary secretary Linda McClintock says that the most notable amount of rubbish was found where the road was close to the estuary, “it’s disappointing that so much is still thrown out of car windows.” Their team ended up with two trailer loads including sheets of plastic, car seats and tyres.

Richmond business owners began their April workshop series on Wednesday, April 4. A joint initiative between the Nelson Tasman Business Trust and Richmond Unlimited, the series has been established to arm Richmond retailers with the necessary tools to keep their businesses thriving during the Queen St upgrade. The series kicked off with Gina Munro’s presentation on Business Interruption Strategies to build Resilience. Trust manager Sarah Holmes says the presentation resulted in good discussion and ideas for building networks, staff engagement and dealing with unexpected events. Gina’s presentation emphasised the value in collaborating with other local businesses for support, and sharing resources and marketing initiatives. Pleased with the feedback, Sarah says, “everyone enjoyed the opportunity to meet up with other local businesses away from the day to day and learn more, and are looking forward to the other talks.” Next week’s speaker Bill Brett will cover Financial Management with following weeks on Marketing with Monique Wijnen and Social Media with Bea Pole Bokor. The workshops are a result of collaboration by the Business Trust and their business mentors, Richmond Unlimited, Richmond Mall’s venue, Ambrosia and the Wooden Spoon for refreshments.

Local lass gets cranking for a good cause Amy Russ Richmond Aquatic Centre’s RPM Instructor Mel Walker will be giving it her all on April 14, as part of an 8 hour ‘Crankathon’ Challenge, raising money for the New Zealand Rescue Helicopter Trust. Originally from Southland, Mel has been part of their annual Westpac Chopper 250 km bike ride fund-raiser, from Queenstown to Invercargill (QT2INV). She thought it was a cool idea

and wanted to do something similar for our area. Since getting the go-ahead from organisers, Mel has been busy putting the wheels in motion for her event. She has already raised over $500 for the cause after hosting a quiz night and selling raffle tickets for a chainsaw. All of which will be added to Saturday’s total. Richmond Aquatic Centre’s Fitness Manager Byron Hull says, “I think it’s just brilliant what Mel is doing. She has put in so much effort getting it all

organised, and all for a great cause.” To show your support at her Crankathon as an individual or to sign up as a team, contact the fitness team at Richmond Aquatic Centre on 5439755 or email byh@clmnz.co.nz You can choose between $50 for 4 hours or $80 for 8 hours. All proceeds go to the New Zealand Rescue Helicopter Trust. Can’t make it, but still want to help? Visit www.helirescue.co.nz/donate to make a donation.

Downer team managed to secure their place as reigning champions for another year in the Nelson Tasman Hospice ‘Tug of Peace’ fundraiser event. It came down to the best of three in the end, and with a one-all draw, it was a nail-biting victory for the local team. Pictured on right, Drew Hayes, Downer captain and the driving force behind the team, says, “It was a good competition. A few more ladies’ teams next year would be great for the event, too.” Nelmac Team leader Duncan Renwick (left) says the participation this year was great and “fun for everyone involved”. The annual fund-raiser for hospice is where teams from local schools and businesses get to test their strength, willpower and sheer determination to win ultimate bragging rights, and help raise awareness for the Hospice. Funds raised will go towards building costs at their new site on Suffolk Road. Photo: Amy Russ.

New Writing Group at Richmond Library Richmond Library are excited to announce their new writing group for adults. Collections Librarian Ruth Lawley says, “The Richmond Writing Group is for adults with an interest in writing – whether you’re just thinking about starting to write, or you’re a published author, or somewhere in between. If you like to write, this is the group for you.” Each month the group will host a visiting expert in the field of

writing. April’s guest visitor is Kerry Sunderland, a creative writing teacher at NMIT who also takes writing retreats. In May, CopyPress Publishing owner David McManus will be the guest speaker, and in June, award-winning author and playwright Michelanne Forster will attend to give some great writing tips and tricks. Lawley says, “The idea is that, in the first half of the session, a guest speaker will provide inspiration, and in the second

half of the session, attendees have the opportunity to put pen to paper and focus on writing. There’s definitely something for everyone.” The Richmond Writing Group’s first meeting is on Tuesday, 17 April, from 1.00pm-3.00pm in the Constance Barnicoat room, and will take place on the third Tuesday of every month. It is free to attend and all are welcome.

Nelson Matters The first problem is Labour promised no new taxes during this term of Parliament. PM Ardern is arguing it is a duty and not a tax. That will not wash with the public. It is also hollow for the Government to argue that it is not a new tax on the basis that it is just putting up an existing tax. On this basis she could put income tax and GST up. This extra 10 cents a litre fuel tax will hit families’ car running costs by $250 per year but also add to the bill for groceries through increased transport costs. The killer blow for Nelson is

how they intend to spend the money taken in petrol taxes and road user charges from cars and trucks. Funding for improved State Highways upgrades nationally is to be cut 70% from $1375 million in 2018 to $425 million in 2028. It is a $5 billion reduction in new highway construction. New light rail projects in Auckland and Wellington are to get $4 billion and other rail an extra $1 billion. The other changes are an increase for road safety policing, walkways and cycle ways and funding for Council roads but are

Nelson’s congestion and road safety problems are getting worse because of the growth in population, exports, and visitors. The extraordinary message from the new Government’s ten year transport policy last week is Nelson is going to have to pay more but get less. Petrol tax is to go up from 70c to 80c per litre meaning it will cost an extra $5 dollars each time to fuel up. This will increase the amount Nelson and Tasman road users pay from $100 million to $110 million a year.

small by comparison. The big change is taking billions more off road users across New Zealand, slashing highway funding and giving it to Auckland and Wellington tram and train commuters. This 10 year plan means the chances of seeing any significant upgrades of SH6 or SH60 in our region are close to zero. We have done the Richmond Deviation in the 1990s, the Stoke Bypass in the 2000s and the Ruby Bay Bypass in 2012. National had budgeted $135 million for the Southern Link starting before 2020 and that

was without the 10 cents hike in petrol tax. I worry about Nelson and Tasman’s future with this plan. Our vehicle fleet is projected to grow from 100,000 to 120,000 over this decade, but without roading investment it means more congestion and more accidents. Taking an extra $10 million a year out of households in the region will also negatively impact our economy. This plan from Nelson’s perspective is nothing short of highway robbery. Advt.

Ministry of Social Development (MSD) Taskforce Green workers are on the job cleaning up damage caused by excyclone Gita in the Tasman district. MSD, in partnership with the Tasman District Council and Valley Education and Training Enterprises Ltd (VETEL), launched the Enhanced Taskforce Green programme in the Brooklyn, Riwaka and Marahau area. Orchardist Mark James of Brookland Valley is full of praise for the ETFG team and his local community, after his orchard and packing shed were inundated with silt and debris in the late February storms. The Brooklyn Valley Stream burst its banks and flooded his property, right at the beginning of harvest. “I have never felt so helpless as during the flood when my wife and family were rescued by our local fire brigade,” says Mark. “However, the whole community has been brilliant. The flood made us meet neighbours we’d just nodded to before - now we all know one another.” With the help of the ETFG teams to clear away the logs and debris, and clear around

Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne said the extra clean-up help was very welcome. “We are grateful that Government announced Taskforce Green funding which has enabled us to further support the clean-up following cyclone Gita. Our local producers make a re-

ally important contribution to our regional economy, so getting them back up and running as soon as possible is important for our wider community - as well as being vital for the emotional and economic wellbeing of the people who own and work on the land,” says Richard. Those employed on the scheme will be working to clear productive land and salvage as much as possible for growers. Passionate petition presentation Save Our Springs arrived in full volume and colour to present a petition on Te Waikoropupu Springs to the Council ahead of the consideration of the Water Conservation Order application. The passion for this taonga, shown by the approximately 35 supporters who travelled from Golden Bay, was obvious. Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne, in accepting the petition from the Save our Springs group, assured the lively assembly the protection of Te Waikoropupu Springs is of utmost importance to the Tasman District Council as well. “The passion of the group and

community for Te Waikoropupu is wonderful to see. The Springs are a precious place and we are well aware of how important it is that we care for them. I expect the current Water Conservation Order process and Takaka Freshwater Land and Advisory Group work will result in a firstclass water management regime for the Takaka catchment that reflects the aspirations of the community.” The public hearings for the Water Conservation Order application begin on 17 April at the Golden Bay Shared Recreation Centre. The submissions and hearing schedule will post on the EPA website from 10 April.

Wakefield to Nelson commuters sought Wakefield to Nelson commuters are encouraged to attend a meeting at The Villa café in Wakefield at 4pm on Sunday, April 15, to discuss their transport needs. A petition in February 2017 that garnered over a thousand signatures requesting a Waimea Express bus service running between Wakefield and Nelson each weekday for commuters was unsuccessful, on the grounds it was unlikely to be well-patronised.

Petition organisers Del Wasley and Kate Malcolm came up with an idea to test if demand was there and Cr Dean McNamara approached Hilary Bird, the new owner of the Wakefield Rest Home, to enquire if she could spare her van for the purpose. With Hilary’s interest, organisers say the next step is to determine if there is enough community support to make such a service viable. Register your interest by phoning Hilary 541 8995.

Sport fishing for youth Amy Russ For the next two Sundays, thanks to the Sports Fishing For Youth Trust, local children will have the opportunity to participate in a guided ‘fish out’ day at the specially-built Waimea River Park Fishing Ponds in Appleby. The trust’s original objective in 2012 was to provide youth with an opportunity to go fishing, enjoy the outdoors, and to develop an appreciation of the outdoor environment. Ian Kearney, chairman of Sports Fishing for Youth Trust says, “we believe the ponds are a great opportunity for children to experience outdoor activities.” The event has successfully expanded over the last five years with over three hundred children attending last year. The Trust provides participants with the equipment and members of the public and of the Nelson Trout Fishing Club will act as guides to show the children how to use the equipment and how to fillet their catch. Dates for guided fishing are April 15 and April

22. Participants will be given a onehour time slot for one of the fishing days. All children must be registered at Fish and Game, call 5446382 or via their website www.fishandgame. org.nz/nelson/ Will Sargeant and David Sulser Horner show off their impressive catches at the Waimea fishing ponds. Tapawera Area School had a Pi Maths day recently. We celebrated this date along with other countries that follow the month/day (m/dd) date format, because the digits in the date, March 14 or 3/14, are the first three digits of π (3.14). It is also Albert Einsteins’s birthday. Pi Day was founded by Physicist Larry Shaw in 1988. Since then, Pi Day has grown into a worldwide celebration of math and pastry. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its di-

ameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi has been calculated to have over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. Pi is also a homophone of the word pie - the 2 words are pronounced similarly but are spelled differently and mean different things. The staff paid homage to this well-rounded mathematical constant by representing the pi formula (circumference divided by diameter) using — what else — baking pies! Sweet and savoury pies were made for the senior house leaders to judge. Each of the three school

houses had teachers who belonged to the houses make a savoury or sweet pie. Naturally enough, the teachers who baked the pies weren’t identifiable to the House Leaders when judging, otherwise bias might have come into play. Taste buds were temped big time, as the students were sampling all the 6 pies from a traditional bacon and egg pie to the sweet raspberry pie. There was even a perfect score. The staff were able afterwards to have a great morning tea. The Baton teacher ‘Chefs’ won but there were only by a few points in it in the end.

All day at school, various activities took place. Such as making pi bracelets, Fibonacci number art and investigations and human pi symbols. In the afternoon, a whole school event was held where students raced to make the numbers one to ten using the digits of Pi 3.14159 and drawing creative patterns with chalk and a piece of string. The friendly house completion had Tadmor house as the victors. This whole school, 5-yearolds to 18 displayed great leadership and social interaction and the afternoon was engaging for all levels.

201 SONGER STREET STOKE - 547 8454 Open 7am-7pm 7 days a week

Waimea Area Quilters will be showcasing their creations over two days on April 14 and 15, at Wakefield School. This will be the second time the bienniel event has being held, hosting over 500 people through the doors last time, and the show is set to impress again this year with around 130 quilts on display. When founding members Sue Burrowes, Marilyn Gibbs and Vonnie Wadsworth started the group in 2011, the vision was to have a fun and happy, local group, they now

boast a membership of 30. Past president Sue says, “it is lovely to see some of the younger and newer members coming out of their shell, and really blossoming with their confidence.” Motueka Quilting group ‘Undercover Girls’ will be visiting, and have 12 quilts in the show. Entry is $3 and refreshments will be available at the event, catered by the school pool committee, with coffee, tea and home baking available for purchase. All proceeds in aid of the Wakefield School pool. For enquires contact Marilyn Gibbs on 5418435.

Budding scientists enthrall Cynthia Martin, Diana Wilkins and Debra Gibbs join Waimea students Taine Allen, Mac Karalus, Bradley Davis, Melia Gillam and Holly Sturrock. Photo: Supplied. Emily Beaumont Five Waimea College students spent the evening of Monday, March 26, regaling the Rotary Club of Richmond with stories of their two-week stint at the 29th annual Rotary National Science & Technology forum.

Bradley Davis, Mac Karalus, Taine Allen, Holly Sturrock and Melia Gillam are high-achieving science students who were selected for the opportunity to experience lectures, labs and field trips across different campuses to expose them to the possibilities that exist in the world of science and

technology. The fully residential programme is for students, to enable an understanding of the tertiary courses available. Richmond’s Rotary Club sponsored the students to attend the event, a privilege usually only reserved for one or two students.

“The calibre of the students was so high that I put forward we sponsor the five students, which our club accepted,” says Debra Gibbs, Richmond Rotary New Generations Committee. A move appreciated by Waimea College who say they value their relationships with members of

the community and local businesses who support the school. The forum is noted for its ability to develop and motivate students and it was obvious by the students’ presentation that they have returned home with heightened confidence levels, a sense of purpose and a desire to achieve.

Jennian Homes Nelson Bays win Gold At an awards evening on the Gold Coast, Tuesday, April 3, a Nelson Bays franchise won the Jennian Homes’ prestigious Franchisee of the Year award, the second time in three years the franchise has won the award. “It’s both a surprise and a tremendous honour to accept the Franchisee of the Year award on behalf of the team,” says Jennian Homes Nelson Bays

franchise owner Simon Collett, joined by Jennian Homes Nelson Bays general manager Darryl O’Reilly in accepting the award. “It’s a tribute to the hard work that everyone’s put in to ensuring that we deliver the best product possible.” Jennian Homes chief operating officer Aidan Jury says that the Nelson Bays franchise impressed with the consistent

quality of their homes. “We are proud of the achievements of all our franchisees, but Simon, Darryl and the team have set a new benchmark that really gives all of us something to aspire to,” says Aidan. “It is gratifying to see the way Simon has given back to his community, his colleagues, and to other business people through his mentoring and sup-

port.” With Jennian Homes being a proud partner of the New Zealand Commonwealth Games team and #EarnTheFern campaign, Aidan says the opening of the Games presented the perfect opportunity for Jennian’s annual awards evening. “The Gold Coast is buzzing with athletes, I can’t Jennian Homes Nelson Bays Sithink of a better time and place to mon Collett and general manager celebrate our top players as well.” Darryl O’Reilly Photo: Supplied.

Waimea Dam just misses chop Nelson MP Dr Nick Smith is relieved the new Coalition Government is honouring the previous National Government’s commitment of $35 million towards the Waimea Community Dam, despite the April 5 announcement that Crown Irrigation would be wound up. “National views the Waimea Community Dam as the only practical way we can lift summer minimum river flows, improve water quality and grow our successful horticulture industries on the Waimea Plains. The $82 million cost is beyond what the community and irrigators can afford so our Government committed to provide $42 million in support, made up of a $7 million grant from the Environment Ministry and $35 million in capital funding at discounted rates from Crown Irrigators. “The cancellation of any further Government support makes it vital that we get this project over the line or the region will lose the $52 million in Government funding. I am encouraged that Waimea Irrigators is 90% of the way to its $16.5milllion initial target and urge other landowners to come aboard during this last week. They will not get a better deal. I am also urging both Councils to ensure they contribute. “We have this unique opportunity to provide water security for the next century for horticulture and housing as well as address longstanding problems of summer low flow and algae blooms. We will regret for decades if we let this $42 million of funding slip away.”

A Grey Power good sort

Amy Russ

Long-serving Grey Power past-president Gordon Currie has achieved a lot in his lifetime. From serving 11 years as a volunteer fireman and chief fire officer in Golden Bay, to looking after the interests of the over 50’s age group in his past role as Grey Power president, serving as chairperson for the National Federation Board Grey Power, volunteering on the Nelson Bays Community Law Board (which he still does to this day). Gordon’s contribution to the community seemed like perfect grounds for fellow committee member Pauline Daly. “Gordon has definitely been a ‘good sort’ over the years and deserves some recognition for all his work. I know he helped build up Grey Power to what it is today.” When Gordon started with the organisation in 1993, there were around 1500 members, when he left his post after 21 years, the membership had risen to 14,000. “We were the biggest Grey

Key contributor retires from meat works Amy Russ Terry Kreft has been a key figure at the Nelson Freezing works export meat plant since 1990. He was instrumental in saving the Nelson plant and building the new site, where it still stands today. He helped collaborate the plant’s 100 year celebrations in 2009, one of his fondest memories. Terry will be retiring on April 13 this year. Terry started working in the meat industry 41 years ago, in Dunedin, working his way up to manager. In 10 years he had gone from being a meat inspector to running a crew of 700 people at 2 sites. He was the youngest plant manager in the country at that time. Steve Baird, Alliance Group Production and Compliance Manager, says if it wasn’t for Terry’s hard work and input the plant would never have happened. “The decision went through by very small margin and that was all down to Terry. He has a social conscious and you could see it all over those negotiations years ago. If it wasn’t for him, everyone would have been made redundant.” Terry says one of his biggest and proudest achievements was getting the go ahead to build the new

plant. He was involved in building the plant from the ground up. “Things are done very differently now, from the old place. We were very aware of the growing residential environment, our neighbours. We had to become environmentally-friendly, so that’s

Terry Kreft in 1991. He was appointed Plant Manager in 1990. Photo: Supplied. how we designed it. The support we got from the local Mayors during that time was tremendous. I very much appreciated it.” Terry is looking forward to his retirement, looking forward to relaxing and having some ‘me’ time. “I will miss the people, the really dedicated hard working people

here. I take my hat off to the work force. It is a good atmosphere in this place. It is not easy work and it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but we are blessed with a good work force. But my wife Barbara and I have just built a new house and I have landscaping to do, so now I will be on the end of a shovel instead of a pen! And I’m also looking forward to retirement giving me a bit more time to row surf boats!” Terry has been involved with surf life saving right from a young age and recently brought home a gold medal from the Gisborne New Zealand Surf Lifesaving Championships. Terry has also been heavily involved with Waimea Rugby Club over a number of years. He was a competitive rugby player in both Otago and Canterbury and coached at the Waimea Club for 2 years. The avid Makos supporter grins as he says, “I really love my rugby!” Steve says Terry will be sorely missed when he retires. “On a personal level I have really enjoyed working with Terry. He sets high standards for himself and is a great role model to learn from. I genuinely wish him and Barbara all the best. It is very ironic that he chose Black Friday as his last day, it suits his sense of humour!”

Upgrade moves into next phase

Within the next two weeks, the Queen Street/Wensley Road intersection will close completely while the roundabout is reconstructed and streetscaping is carried out. This will be a challenging time, as both Queen Street entrances to the Richmond Mall/Warehouse carpark will be closed. We've been working with the carpark’s owners to manage the disruption, particularly on Talbot Street when it becomes the only entry and exit point into the carpark.

Talbot Street will come under pressure and we will make temporary changes to the street to manage this as best we can, including: • a small temporary roundabout on Talbot Street at the middle entry/exit to the carpark to better manage traffic flows in and out • removal of several parking spaces on Talbot Street to improve visibility

When it comes to emergency situations—whether it’s fires, car accidents, medical callouts, chemical spills or adverse weather events, local communities are extremely grateful they have volunteer fire fighters who freely donate their time to protect lives, homes and businesses. Under the umbrella of the newly-established authority Fire and Emergency New Zealand, numerous urban fire stations serve our local region including Richmond, Wakefield, Tapawera, Upper Moutere, Mapua and Nelson; meanwhile our region’s voluntary rural fire forces include Appleby, Brightwater, Glen/Hira, Marahau, Lake Rotoiti, Minister Agriculture, Biosecurity and Food Safety Ngatimoti, Tasman, Upper Takaka and Wainui osecurity and Food Safety MP forof West Coast-Tasman MP Coast/Tasman Minister for Rural Communities st/Tasman nities MinisterWest of Agriculture, Biosecurity and Food Safety Bay. the fire service. “At the Richmond Fire Brigade it is really varied with the kinds of callouts we get because of our location,” says Volunteer Firefighter and Recruitment Officer Alex Theobald. “Because we are a mixed urban and rural area, we have structure fires as well as vegetation fires and a lot of car crashes, especially along Appleby Straight and Main Road Hope type areas.” In such situations, the Richmond fire crews work alongside the Appleby Volunteer Fire Brigade. Richmond Firefighters also get a lot of medical callouts. Meanwhile, brigades such

as the Wakefield Volunteer Fire Brigade are also well prepared for medical events; they carry an AED, are trained in CPR, and have other tools such as monitoring kit so that when St John arrives they can relay important stats such as heart rate and breathing. “When you volunteer with a brigade such as Richmond, you will complete a five day course to get all the basic skills,” says Alex. “People can also train in vehicle accident extrication and first aid, because these days we do a lot of work in conjunction with St John.

Volunteer Fire Fighters Awareness All of our volunteers get taught the same things; you start out as a firefighter and you can also learn things like fire truck driving and pump operations. Later down the track, volunteers can apply to become a fully-fledged fire officer; they have more capabilities—in Nelson for example, the fire officers can utilize their chemical command truck and a large ladder truck. If there is a decent sized accident or a large structure fire, we will often call for their assistance.” New Zealand’s first volunteer fire services were founded in the 1850s. Since then, our firefighting service has evolved into the mix of paid full-time, paid on-call and volunteer responders that make up Fire and Emergency New Zealand today. For most of its history, New Zealand’s fire services were funded and managed locally. In 1975 local authority Fire Boards amalgamated into a national New Zealand Fire Service. However, Rural Fire Authorities were retained as separate organisations, coordinated by the National Rural Fire Authority. For over 40 years, there were no further significant changes to fire service legislation until last year. After two reviews of the fire

services in 2012 and 2015, and following extensive consultation, Fire and Emergency NZ was established on July 1st, 2017. This new, unified fire organisation brings together our country’s urban and rural fire services for the first time. There are nine Fire and Emergency New Zealand Voluntary Rural Fire Forces within the Nelson Tasman District com-

Volunteer rural firefighters frequently attend vegetation fires which can require special expertise and multiple crews to bring such situations under control. prising 130 volunteers. “Since July last year, rural fire authorities ceased to exist,” says Principal Rural Fire Officer Ian Reade. “All our volunteer urban brigades and volunteer rural fire forces have come under one umbrella, administered and governed by Fire and Emergency NZ, which

is funded through insurance levies. The primary focus of our region’s rural fire forces is vegetation fires, but we also support, and in some cases are the first to respond to; structure fires, motor accidents and medical callouts. However, our rural fire forces don’t carry breathing apparatus so any structure fires they attend they attack from the outside. Whereas the primary focus of an urban brigade is based around breathing apparatus, so they go into the smoke and attend hazard substance type calls. The urban and rural services are often very complementary—two crews attend a job and one has vegetation expertise and the other has structure fire and hazardous substance expertise. The new legislation has provided our people, in particular our volunteers, with the legislative backbone to respond to the likes of motor vehicle accidents, medical calls in conjunction with St John, hazardous substance situations and natural disasters such as flooding and earthquakes.” “Our region’s dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to serve their local communities and the rural assets within the district. We are ever grateful to the commitment, sacrifice

and often hard and dirty work our volunteers undertake to serve the dis-

trict and the rural community.” (Nelson Tasman Fire and Emergency NZ)

Don’t let your life be limited. If you are concerned about our future you need not also be concerned about how far into it you can travel before you need more energy. The 4th generation Toyota Hybrid System has been developed to be not only incredibly fuel efficient, but also very user friendly. So much so you will hardly notice the difference driving “normally” except when it comes time to fuel up. You will be pleasantly surprised at the petrol pump and will end up looking forward to topping up just to see how far you have gone between fills! If you want to take it a step further we can show you how use the technology to get maximum fuel efficiency.

The company also appreciates the importance of good relations with its local customers. “We like to maintain a good rapport with all of our clients, and have built strong relationships with key players such as the two councils and the Nelson Airport.” Now that it's reached 70 years, McKenzies Painting Contractors can celebrate on April 16th with a real sense of pride and achievement, having fulfilled its

goal to reach a significant milestone, after so much success in a highly competitive sector. The family-run painting business, which currently has 24 fully qualified painters, two apprentices and five fully qualified furniture finishers, has delivered quality work at a fair price for three generations now. And with four family members (including two of Ray’s grandchildren) working for the company presently, McKenzies Paint Contractors could well be here for another 70 years! Summer tennis wraps up for juniors This weekend saw the Talley’s Junior Summer Open run in conjunction with the final Tennis Hot Shots (THS) tournament, offering tennis from 5 year olds through to the 18 year olds. THS is an introduction to tournament tennis using equipment and court size modified to suit each age. Red level was won by Matai Arnott, followed by the orange level winners Max Murdock & Lucas Swarbrick, finally green; Allen Collins. The Talley’s Junior Open began on Friday with doubles play; Christie Gilbert and Charlotte Osborn romped home with a confident win in the 16 girl’s doubles, followed by Rani McGuire and Tina Waine taking the 14 girls

doubles title. Number one seeds Maisson Begg and Lucy Mitchell were tested in the second set against Honor Barry and Annabel Grenfell, Begg and Mitchell came through to take the 10’s girls doubles win 4-0, 5-3. The 12’s boy’s doubles title went seamlessly for Harry Pugh and Finn Brown taking the title with straight sets wins throughout the draw. Tournament umpire James Brown commented that the sportsmanship and camaraderie was obvious, “players across all ages supported each other on and off court, it was a pleasure to work with these young competitors” The 16/18 girls singles final proved to be one of the matches of the tournament with

Marlborough player Ella Williams giving Christie Gilbert a run for her money. Despite proficient serving, both players broke serve fairly regularly with competent return of serve followed by lengthy and hard hitting baseline rallies that forced each player to angle the ball with speed and accuracy. Finally Gilbert prevailed 7/6, 7/6. The 14’s girls singles final also produced a tight match; Rani McGuire had a tough fight on her hands against Ashley Welsh, with Welsh hard on McGuire’s heels throughout. However McGuire’s experience and competence succeeded to win the title with a final score of 7/5, 6/4.

The quality and workmanship were excellent We couldn't be happier with our relationship with McKenzies and with the fantastic job they did painting both the complete exterior and parts of the interior of our home as part of an extensive renovation. The quality and workmanship were excellent, as was working with their team at each step of the way. Great job all around - you'll see us again for sure!". RICK & MELISSA - NELSON

Youth swimmers battle it out

The Nelson Tasman Primary School Swimming Champs held at the Richmond Aquatic Centre had 135 swimmers from 22 schools swimming their hearts out on Sunday, April 8. Of the 11 schools from Tasman District, Maddie Seymour from Henley School won the most gold with three gold medals and a silver. Swimming in the year 5 and under group, she won the 25m backstroke, the 50m breaststroke and 50m backstroke events, and got a silver in the 50m freestyle event. Maddie broke last year’s records in both backstroke races by over two seconds. Wakefield School won the most medals for the Tasman area, claiming two gold, two silver and two bronze. Alex Todd won the 25m backstroke for year 6 boys and Zoe Lovegrove claimed gold in the year-5-and-under 50m freestyle event, and a silver in the 50m breaststroke. Ursula Oakes went home with a silver medal from her 25m breaststroke event, Lucas Bell got a bronze in the 25m freestyle. Lily Trench, a year 6 swimmer from St Paul’s, won two gold in the 25m freestyle and 25m backstroke events, breaking a record in the backstroke. Marcell Kepess, also from St Paul’s, claimed a silver in the 50m backstroke. Upper Moutere School swimmer Hannah Urqhuart won a gold in the 25m breastroke, silver in the 25m backstroke and a bronze for the 50m freestyle. Schoolmate Brecon Jelfs-Berry won a silver in the 25m freestyle event. Silver was the colour of the day for Brightwater School, coming second out of 21 teams in the 100m freestyle relay and their swimmers claimed three individual silvers and a bronze to add to their tally. Jaxon Palmer-Bensenmann claimed two of the silvers in the 50m freestyle and 25m butterfly events. Makenna Holland came second in the 25m butterfly event and won a bronze in the 50m freestyle. Bronze medals went to Nico Traut of Motueka South School for his 50m freestyle swim and Liam Egan from Takaka School in the 50m breaststroke race. The hosts, Swimming Nelson Marlborough, were thrilled that all kids swam really well and that medals and finalist ribbons were shared amongst 21 schools from Hira to Collingwood. With such strong support, the primary school champs will continue to be an annual event for the region.

Lots set to Loop the lake Saturday’s Alpine Lodge Loop the Lake is once again a ‘sell out’ with a capacity 400 strong field entered to circuit Lake Rotoiti, Nelson Lakes. While 165 are Nelson region based, similar numbers travel from the rest of the South Island, whilst 70 North Islanders cross the Cook Strait. Male and female percentages are almost identical, a far cry from the 1990’s when men dominated at around the 80% mark.

Last year’s women’s winner, Serena Kelly (Canterbury) returns and she’s likely to again be chased by Nelson’s Kerry Semmens. Andre Bonny (Nelson) is in good form and he’ll be hoping to improve on his 4th (2017) and 3rd a year earlier. Phil Costley 1.37.42 (2010) and Fleur Lattimore 1.54.50 (2012) hold the course records and they are likely to stand unless a Kenyan or two detour ‘Down Under”.

Emily Beaumont Although it was the serenity of Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) that attracted Richmond’s Tara Hope to the sport only five years ago, her competitive streak kicked in and she’s found success on the national stage. Competing at the 2018 National SUP championships

on the Hibiscus Coast’s Orewa Beach from March 22-24, Tara exceeded her expectations and became the new national women’s surf race champion in the elite category. Her golden run didn’t stop there and she also placed second in the elite distance race. “I’m still coming to terms with what happened, it’s a

bit surreal still. I’m beyond stoked,” says Tara, mother of two boys, 8 & 6 years. SUP is the fastest growing water sport in the world and has a steady increase in participants from the Tasman region who can often be found on the water at Tara’s training sites of Tahunanui beach and Rabbit Island. Tara’s championship win

came down to a sprint for the finish as she held off the current world champ and took the title, a win that could see her compete at the world championships in Brazil this November if successfully selected in June. “It would absolutely be a dream come true to represent New Zealand, and travel to Brazil,” says Tara.

The Wakefield Bowling Club held a triples tournament on Easter Monday for development players from around the region. Each team had to have one member with eight years or under bowls experience and two with six years or under. The club holds the tournament every year to encourage the Junior

With duck shooting just around the corner, the Nelson Waimea Gun club are holding their very popular Duckshooters shoot this Sunday starting at 9 am, wet or fine. A chance to dust off those shotguns and get your eye in. With over $3000 in prizes and food and ammo available, it’s also a great day out. And it’s open to the general public as long as you hold a firearms license. Club spokesperson Chris Scully says that most hunters shoot on the first few days then the guns go back into the safe, so this is a great safe way to practice the skills and make sure the shotgun is operating safely and reliably. A number of club members are on hand to help and advise if needed. Shooters in general are welcome even if you just want to put a few thru the ole side by side, you don’t have to be a duckshooter.
