what it’s going to be like or what the outcome will be.” The northern grandstand was upgraded for “earthquake purposes” in 1989, says John. The timing of last week’s magnitude 7.0 earthquake, which was heavily felt in the Tasman region, was a fresh reminder at the importance of the buildings’ safety. No damage has been reported from the quake. It is believed the buildings built before the 1970s are likely to be under most risk. The reviews follow suit from the Nelson City Council who recently
closed some of its buildings, including the New Hub, because of safety concerns. TDC property manager Jim Frater explains the focus was also insuring all civil defence emergency sites are safe from earthquake damage. Previous reviews were conducted in 2006 and the results showed some areas of concern in the TDC offices, which are currently being upgraded, the Golden Bay Service Centre, the grandstand at the recreation park in Takaka, the Collingwood Memorial Hall and the Motueka District Museum. Council expects to have its results by the end of the week.

New entrance and shops set for mall Phillip Rollo Construction will start at the Richmond Mall next month as it looks to future proof its premises ahead of potential expansion. A new entrance way is likely to be finished by the end of the year while the food court is being re-tiled. Richmond Mall manager David Hill says the two projects will “future proof ” the mall ahead of expansion next year. “The number one rule in a shopping centre is that you never box in your majors and this allows for future expansion of our majors, which are our two supermarkets and

It’s not something that just happens overnight. It’s been on the boiler for quite some time so to finally get the go is really exciting,” says Fiona. Fiona says foot traffic has always been quite high but noted that many people only visit Richmond to go to the mall. An international clothing retailer is also in talks with mall management about a site near Fresh Choice.
Dancers go global FROM PAGE 1 the Hip Hop Unite National Championship in Wellington last weekend, the girls were selected for the Netherlands. Final placings at the national competition do not guarantee teams a boarding pass to the Netherlands, a head judge from the competition has the final word. However, the girls shined on the national level and were picked along with one other junior team for the world championship. The junior category is for dancers aged 13 to 17 years old. There will be 16 to 20 different countries represented at the world championships with more than 1000 dancers competing. Origin Dance Crew coach Gemma Laing says New Zealand dance crews often do well on the world stage because they have their own unique style. “Teams that we competed against on the weekend to get this nomination have been to worlds before and have done very well before so we know we meet the standard,” she says. Timing, energy and strength are key areas that judges look out for but mainly they are after an overall package. Because of the timing of the world championship, dancers only have four months to fundraise what is likely to be $4000 per person. Origin Dance Crew will hold a hip hop competition called Shakedown on September 22 as part of its fundraising, but they were still in the process of confirming a venue. All of the dancers take workshops at primary schools to personally raise money for the trip. None of the girls have been to the Netherlands before but they were all busy Googling the country during the week. If you would like to help the fundraising cause to get Origin Dance Crew to the Netherlands please contact Gemma at effectdance@gmail. com.

Hundreds hit trail for bridge unveiling The latest link in the Great Taste Cycle Trail was opened on Sunday with the bridge over the Wairoa River crossed by the public for the first time. Hundreds took to the track, many heading to Brightwater Domain, where the dedication ceremony was celebrated with family attractions. The track is part of the Tasman Great Taste Trail, and it allows an easy passage for cyclists from Richmond though to through to Brightwater and beyond, linking with the track that runs from Nelson to Mapua. The bridge is located between Bryant Rd and Pugh Rd. It is part of an initiative to create a series of “great rides” around New Zealand that will showcase the natural beauty of the countryside and to stimulate the economy through tourism. “It’ll be great for tourism, and families as well. It’ll get people on the bike track and out of the traffic. It’s really good,” says cyclist George Terry. The suspension bridge was a toll route for Sunday only, asking a gold coin donation towards the Great Taste Cycle Trail fund. More than $640 was raised on the day with a further $820 of virtual trail also being sold over the past few weeks. Brightwater businesses noticed the influx of cyclists and tourists, with local pubs and cafes accommodating for the crowds. “It’s great for Brightwater, it was their day to shine,” says Fiona Newey, executive officer of the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust. “All those people will come back, that’s the whole thing. If the locals get behind it, that interest will spread.”
From My Desk
The next section of the track is due to open in October, with the Wakefield stretch completing the southernmost end of stage one. The northernmost stretch to Mapua is due to open in December. “Then we get into stage two, which is really exciting, from Mapua to Kaiteri. We hope to have that open by June 2013,” says Fiona. For more information about purchasing your own virtual segment of the cycle trail, visit www.heartofbiking.org.nz.

Nadja Baden fought off a record number of contestants to be crowned the Richmond Mall Model Search winner for 2012. The tween beauty attends Broadgreen Intermediate School and has only been in the country for four years. Originally from Germany, Nadja entered the model search last year but could only manage a third placing in the intermediate category. This year she came up trumps, winning the intermediate category and the overall title. Model search judge Leonie Trathen says Nadja had the “overall package” and highlighted the rawness of her modelling experience. “She’s going to be very good to photograph and very good on the catwalk. She’s got a lot of confidence and she did an amazing job,” says Leone. “She hasn’t done a lot of modelling but she carried herself as if she had. There are some others that have done some modelling work before and we know what they can but she is the unknown and we think she can go along way.” Nadja was cheered on by a large group of friends at the model search, showing she had the most support from the spectators.
Nadja, who had no modelling experience other than last year’s model search, hopes her victory will be the start of a career in the industry. She added that modelling was something she always wanted to do. Milla Brabyn was the winner of Miss Primary Richmond Mall for contestants between four and eight years old, Georgia Rae was the winner of Miss Junior Richmond Mall and Sabrina Hennings was the winner of Miss Teen Richmond Mall. All of the individual winners then competed for the overall prize which included a $500 photoshoot. Bo Kessler, a entrant in the four to eight year old category, won a family trip the Gold Coast courtesy of House of Travel. Higher participation numbers also resulted in more confidence on the catwalk, with many of the contestants coming back from previous years. Past contestants have gone on to feature in television advertisements, enter New Zealand’s Next Top Model and star in the World of Wearable Arts show in Wellington. Richmond Mall manager David Hill was delighted with the turnout for the seventh edition of the model search and says it is one of the most succesful promotions run by the mall.

Shed to hold national conference The Waimea Menz Shed will host the organisation’s national conference just one year after opening its doors in Richmond. Around 80 Menz Shed delegates and their partners are expected to attend the national conference over the summer period as Menz Shed Aotearoa links a relationship between all of the sheds around the country. The Menz Shed is a workshop where its members can spend time building projects with the shed’s tools and equipment in a social environment. The second ever national conference was recently held in Wellington where a national body was formed with representatives from different regions. In Wellington, it was decided that the next conference would come to Nelson, delighting local shed
co-ordinator Alan Kissell. “I hope it will create a bit more interest in the region I suppose. There’s seven sheds currently underway in the Nelson-Marlborough region which is more sheds per head of population than any other area,” he says. The Waimea Menz Shed’s membership currently sits at 90 following its opening last September. Other local sheds in the pipeline include Motueka, Golden Bay, Tapawera, Mapua, Picton, Renwick and Havelock. There are more than 40 sheds registered nationally with some of those holding a membership of more than 100. The Waimea Menz Shed had been in the works for 18 months prior to opening and Alan says since that date it has really taken off. “There’s obviously such a need for it.”

July Special - Be in to win a $50 voucher from
June’s winner Sue Watts (centre) with Ian and Tania Read
The Richmond Community Police are on the look out for more eyes and ears. Those eyes and ears come in the form of a team of volunteer community patrollers that scour the streets acting as a prevention to crime. Currently there are a total of 28 volunteers registered to the Richmond District Community Patrol but because five of them are unable to commit for various reasons right now, the search for more begins. Community patrol co-ordinator Mike Gill says the turnover for patrollers has been quite low over the four years that they have been together. But with five of them out of action it meant other patrollers were volunteering more often that they needed to. “We’re just trying to get the numbers up at the moment so we can have peo-
ple doing a patrol every six to eight weeks,” says Mike. “We just want to make Richmond a safe and nice community to live in.” Currently the patrol includes volunteers aged between 30 and mid 70s. Some are retired, some are local businesspeople. Last year the community patrollers did a lot of work around Rugby World Cup and regularly attend events within the Richmond CBD including the Sprig & Fern Summer Fare. “When we had the big floods on last year we had a patrol out on a Thursday night for a cruise around seeing if we could be of any assistance.” If you are interested in becoming a community patroller please phone Mike on 027 286 4157 or pick up an application form from the Richmond Community Police Station.

No rest for show crew Phillip Rollo It has been a case of “what holidays?” for the crew behind the scenes of Waimea College’s production Guys and Dolls. From the lighting crew to the costume designers, all of the 20-strong crew behind the scenes have been spending every day of the school holidays back at Waimea College getting their jobs done before show time on July 25. Lighting technician Nick Thompson, 17, says his role is a great way to give back to the school. Nick will be operating the lighting on the night of the production but is in the current stage of deciding which mood of lighting best suits each scene. “I’m looking for moods and what kind of
day it is. For example you’d use a blue light if it was night,” says Nick. Rebecca Robertson, 17, has spent her holidays creating all of the dresses in the show. She estimates there will be approximately 160 items in the show that have been created by her. Around $1800 was spent on materials for the dancers’ costumes alone. All of the costumes are individually tailored to each student. Guys and Dolls was a Broadway show set in the 1950s. Show director Melanie Stewart says people can expect a “surprise” when they see the costumes but hinted there will be plenty of sparkles. Tickets are currently available from the finance centre at Waimea College.

Ford collector’s 50 year love When Ken Ivory saw a 1931 Ford Model A with a for sale sign on its windscreen, he slammed on his brakes. Driving down Nelson’s Bridge St in 1961, Ken saw what was near identical to the same Model A his grandfather drove him around in when he was a boy. He was quick to get the money out of his pocket and paid up in full – just $220. “You pay more for a tyre these days,” says Ken. The Stoke resident’s love for Ford and his 1931 Model A has taken him right across the country. He worked on an orchard in Hastings around 1939 and used Model Ts to cart the fruit out. He counts 47 times he has done the return trip to Christchurch in his own Model A, which has now clocked up 70,000 miles. His collection of Fords has reached 24 different cars, although that is much smaller now. But it’s not just his love for the Ford Motor Company that attracted him to the 1931 Model A. It had a strikingly similarity to the one his grandfather owned. When Ken was a boy he used to go for trips with his grandfather and hoped that one day it would be passed down to him. New Zealand was just coming out of the depression back in those days, so driving around with his grandfather was Ken’s greatest enjoyment. “We’d get in the car with grandma and granddad, get a flask and some sandwiches and go for
a drive. We thought it was marvellous.” Ken, a former painting contractor, has been offered close to $25,000 from potential buyers, a much large figure than when he bought it. But he wants to make sure it stays in the family for the younger generations and is not prepared to sell. Ken was one of the founding members of the Nelson Vintage Car Club and is the only member to have had owned the same car since its inception. The car is near identical from when he first bought it, with no crashes and no problems ever occurring. He says that comes down to the condition he keeps it in. In the winter the car is kept inside with its registration put on hold until the warmer months. “I used to fold the hood down, but it needs a new one now. To get any upholstery work down

now costs the Earth.” While the car reached its 50 year milestone, his future trips to Christchurch could also break the 50 mark. Driving to
Christchurch via Kaikoura in the Model A now takes Ken about eight hours – seven if he doesn’t stop off for a cup of tea or two during his trip south.

Just a thought... In one of the greatest short stories ever told Jesus expresses the uniqueness of sibling rivalry, rebellion, anger management and family dysfunction all in a few verses of St.Luke chapter 15. The scene is set with a father (no mother) and two sons. One is a rebellious snot, the other repressed and loveless. The good father in the story expresses the pain of waiting and watching as one son leaves in a family feud. The younger son leaves for an OE and father hopes he will not pick him up in A&E. Waimea College were on target during its defence of secondary school paintball glory. The Paintball Nelson Appleby Cup was held last Friday with teams from Nayland College, Nelson College, Motueka High School and Waimea College taking part. The four teams of seven collected points throughout the day as they took each other on in a series of challenges, including capture the flag, speedball, black hawk down, Gettysburg and many other scenarios. Some of the games include “hit and your out” rules where players must leave the field of play if they get shot. Other matches even saw schools team up and play two on two. Waimea College dominated most matches, pushing its buffer to more than 100 points over second place Nelson College. Due to its overwhelming success, Paintball Nelson Appleby owner Wayne Stockdale is hopeful the teams could push on to play out of town competition. The skill level has increased from last year with most schools utilising all its team-mates better. “I was impressed with the guys’ team building,” says Wayne. “Even though they might think they’re up against it, their willingness to try new things and be a team rather than be individuals, I Waimea College paintballer George Walters runs with was impressed by their attitude and the flag during Friday’s Paintball Nelson Appleby Cup. Training classes for you and your dog Strengthen the relationship with your new best friend and give them skills that will benefit them, and you, their whole life. Vikki Pickering has recently begun eight week courses offering basic skills and good manners training. The group based classes are ideal for puppies that have graduated puppy school. In small, focused groups of up to six dogs, Vikki uses positive reinforcement to teach foundation exercises that will give your dog heightened focus and attention. This is necessary to gain a connection with your pet or to give them the skills to progress onto further training. Vikki has a firm background in dog training, competing in obedience with her own border collies. Vikki has been fascinated with dog
behaviour, recently gaining her Diploma in Canine Behaviour, Science and Technology, as well as memberships with many leading dog training authorities and attending seminars in Australia and New Zealand to keep up-to-date with modern research on canine behaviour. She is currently working towards industry recognition in Australia. Vikki believes in the use of positive reinforcement rather than punishment and force. College star adds spark to Nelson Phillip Rollo Jelena Vucinic hasn’t been able to keep away from the basketball court during her summer holidays. The 20 year-old shooting guard had just completed her sophomore year at Louisiana Tech University where she played in front of crowds of up to 7000 people, before taking court for the Nelson Sparks in the first of three Women’s Basketball Championship tournaments. Jelena’s summer holidays, which ironically is during Nelson’s winter, has involved catching up with friends and family, and the challenge of steering the Sparks to national glory. Jelena is the daughter of current Tall Blacks head coach Nenad Vucinic and former Tall Fern Tatjana Zizic. Fishing with
Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Another successful club season has past and I would like to share a few highlights of the year. This year we introduced some new classes with free diving, and kayaking being the most popular ones. New club members and kayaks class reps Kathy and Gary Pantling have been a big bonus to the club with great enthusiasm shown throughout the year. Gary’s 20lb snapper from a kayak near Cable Bay was a highlight for the year showing you don’t need a big boat and go to D’Urville Island to get a trophy fish. Kathy took on board the club website and also started our Facebook page providing a good place to share our fishing pictures. There was also the introduction of a fish species of the month providing triple points for those that managed to catch one in the nominated month. This concept is a good way to learn how to target a certain species of fish. We also held informative nights once a month during our prize givings. Club members got a chance to share what works for them when catching fish, fishing different areas, with the techniques and gear used to do it. Saturday social nights were introduced once a month at the Suburban Club. Lucky prize draws and guest speakers were an all new concept. We had some excellent guest speakers that came in to share some knowledge in their professional areas. We also had a major
prize each month. All club members that caught and weighed fish during that month were eligible for the draw. Some of the major prizes included a scallop dredge, a weekend away for two to Raetihi Lodge in the Marlborough Sounds and a day out kayaking. The annual prize giving was held recently, with a great turnout of members who enjoyed a fantastic evening. An awesome buffet meal, followed by the trophy prize giving got the evening off to a good start. Another new concept for the club was a spot prize draw for most of the prizes donated. This was well received with everyone getting a prize and some two. The major prize for the evening was a 100 litre esky and this was left until last. All numbers went back in the hat and the lucky winner Alan Rose walked away with the prize. We will be holding our AGM on the July 12 at 7pm at the Port Nelson admin building, visitors centre, Low St, Port Nelson. Also we will be holding an Open Club day on Sunday July 22 from 4pm at the Nelson Suburban Club, where we will be taking registrations for the new season and explaining how the club could benefit you and your family. So please come along and get involved in your club. We are hoping to grow the club a lot more this year and look forward to meeting a growing list of people wanting to join the club.

Nelson Knights indoor cricket players Jon Routhan, Mason Thelin, Ryan Edwards, Simon McGowan, Ollie O’Connor and Brendan Hodgson have been selected in the Canterbury squad for its Action Inter-provincial Championship campaign in September.
Canterbury goes for six The Canterbury indoor cricket team will have a distinct Nelson flavour to it this season. Six local players, Jon Routhan, Ryan Edwards, Simon McGowan, Brendan Hodgson, Ollie O’Connor and Mason Thelin, have been handpicked for the Canterbury squad’s Action Interprovincial Championship campaign in September. It is the highest percentage of players that Nelson has ever supplied to the indoor sport’s premier national tournament. The six players’ selection comes on the back of a successful Action South Island Championship with the Nelson Knights that saw the team run away with the title. Jon – who is a current New Zealand international, having represented the side in the past Indoor
Cricket World Cup – is a major factor in the participation figures. Since returning from Auckland, Jon has been able to put more focus into the sport, leading to a number of top local cricketers crossing over for the winter. “They’ve taken to the sport like a duck to water. They’re an incredible group of guys and they’ve managed to transfer basic outdoor cricket skills into the indoor version of the game,” says Jon. National selectors will have a keen eye on new players at the tournament with the next Indoor Cricket World Cup just two years away. Jon says that international indoor cricket would be the next step for the six players and was hopeful they would impress in Christchurch come September.

Cyclists time it right in trial Around sixty riders competed against each other and the clock on Saturday, during the Tasman Wheelers, Nelson Bays Holden Motor Group Winter Series. The Individual Time Trail saw cyclists cover a distance of approximately 19 kilometres in sunny conditions with a slight tail wind on the first half but a head wind on the home strait. Riders were set off at 30 second intervals with five minutes between grades. ITTs are also referred to as ‘the race of truth’, as winning depends only on each rider’s strength and endurance, and not on help provided by team-mates and others riding ahead and creating a slipstream. Despite having to ride back home to pick up his timing transponder prior to starting, the fastest time of 25 minutes and 20 seconds was
set by Chris Nicholson averaging almost 45 kilometres per hour, 1 minute and 9 seconds clear of the next fastest rider in A Grade, Warrick Spence. Ann Rigg, competing in the Masters 5 age category, set the fastest time in C Grade of 31 minutes and 12 seconds. Ann is the national time trial champion in her age group. Ethan Batt, a promising Under 15 rider, won D Grade in a time of 31 minutes and 7 seconds, 40 seconds ahead of the next rider in the grade. Next weekend’s race, which is not part of the Nelson Bays Motor Group winter series, is a combined Tasman Wheelers/Cycling Nelson event – the Brian Harford mini tour. Full details of this event can be found on www.tasmanwheelers. co.nz.

Wolves to face Rabbits in semi final

Malbas Wanderers Wolves retained its unbeaten record at the Brightwater Domain this year with a hard fought win over the Wairau Taniwha and in doing so have secured the fourth spot in the semi finals of the TRL Smokefree Bin Inn Cup. In what was a must-win for both sides to keep its season alive, it was a game played at high speed, attack and counter attack and an exciting spectacle to watch. Hayden Smith opened the scoring early on with a penalty goal and Sam Hedges opened his try account not long after with a trademark bust down the left flank from 50 metres out. The Taniwha hit back with a try to nuggety centre Uriah Esaw who would go on to prove a handful to the Wolves’ defence all game. With solid defence leading the way, both
sides struggled to gain any ascendancy run the cover defence and take the Wolves and it wasn’t till the 25th minute that the to the lead at halftime 14-10. determined to throw every chance they had at securing a spot in the semi finals in their first year in the competition. Fullback Marlon Samuels carved through the wolves defence, beating three on his way to the line to close the gap to 12 and when giant second rower Ceyphus Samuels busted his way over soon after, the lead was down to six with 20 minutes to go. Sensing a shift in momentum and a need to react quickly, Wolves’ coach Joe Kiriona re-injected fresh players into the game with immediate effect. Fresh legs running at a tiring defence meant quicker plays from the Wolves who used the retreating defence line to good effect, a slick backline move sending Sam across for his second. Sam finished his second hat trick of the season and utility forward Ben Cooper crashed over to seal the win 36-20. The Wolves have a re-match against the Rabbits this weekend at Lower Ngawhatu.

Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys are just one win away from reaching the semi-finals of the Car Company division one championship following a tight 20-18 victory over Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers on Saturday. On the 78th minute of the match, Fijian international lock Tevita Cabuvati stretched out to score under the posts to tie the match. First five-eight Josh Rutledge made no mistake from the kicking tee, sending Waimea to its first win over Wanderers this season and to put them just one win away from reaching the playoffs. With both sides trying to sound each other out in a heated battle, it was Wanderers that took
an early 6-0 lead courtesy of two Jackson Harvey penalties. Waimea slowly got into the game and levelled with two penalties of its own to take the score to 6-6 at halftime. Wanderers made the most of a numerical advantage, following two yellow cards, with Loa Windley crossing over the first try of the game. But the red and whites rallied together to get a seven pointer of its own, this time hardworking prop Ropate Rinakama dotted down to level the game at 13 a piece. Trael Joass scored with only eight minutes to go before Waimea stunned its local rivals to seal an important victory. Waimea face defending champions Wakatu Marist this Saturday at Jubilee Park at 3pm.
Women target third championship in a row Phillip Rollo The Waimea Old Boys women’s team will face old foe Stoke in the championship final this week, hoping to secure its third title in a row. Waimea Old Boys Women ended the regular season with only one loss, that coming against Stoke last month. Waimea were close to not fielding a team in the women’s competition despite its successful history that has seen the team win the title seven times in the past eight years. Team manager Stacey Davis says there is no psychological disadvantage having lost to Stoke the last time the two teams met. “We won the first two and we know we can beat them. It’s just a matter of having that confidence and not letting the result of the past game get to you,” she says. Waimea will have home advantage but

without a competitive fixture – it had the bye on the weekend – the side will be feeling fresh for the final. Stoke cruised past Marist at Greenmeadows to secure its spot in the final. Stacey highlighted the slick backline of Stoke as one of its dangers. Waimea will instead utilise its strengths right across the park. “One of our strengths is that we play as a team. We’re quite a tight bunch of girls and they have really good leadership within the team, everyone takes that role,” she says. The Waimea squad features a mixture of youth and returning players, a handful even make the trip from Blenheim three times a week for practice and matches. “They’re a big part of the team, even though they don’t live here.” The grand final will be held at Jubilee Park this Saturday afternoon after Waimea finished top of the ladder. Kick off is at 1pm.

Both Waimea 9A and 10A teams excelled at the South Island Junior Tournament which was held in Christchurch last week. Not only did the Waimea teams have to contend with tough opposition, they also had to adjust to playing outside. The weather elements were not kind – there was rain, freezing cold temperatures and along with the rain came the wet, heavy ball. If the Nelson girls did not already appreciate play indoors at Saxton Stadium, they would have returned from Christchurch well aware of the benefits after sometimes playing on sub standard surfaces at Hagley Courts. Waimea 9A finished the tournament with an impressive seven win and one loss record. They went through their pool play with convincing wins over Wakatipu, Timaru Girls and Burnside High. They then beat Columba College and Villa Maria before meeting Ashburton High in the quarter final. A superb team performance paved the way for a resounding 31-16 win.
The Waimea girls were disappointed with their game against Southland Girls in the semi final, as it was not their best performance however they rose to the occasion and moved up a gear to take the scalp of Marlborough Girls 30-22 to claim third place. The co-captains Ellie Gaging and Michaela Kerr came in for special praise from coach, Miranda Hart-Tava. Waimea 10A won all three pool games, defeating Central Southland 46-22, Craighead Diocesan 44-16 and Cashmere High 33-21. Crossover games were victories over Villa Maria and St Hilda’s Collegiate before winning the quarter final against Nelson College for Girls, 38-22 win. The semi final was a heart-breaking loss to Southland Girls – the score was tied at 24 all at full time and extra time was required. The rules state that play is to continue until two goals separate the teams. The play off for 3rd resulted in a 39-42 loss against Roncali.

Vegetation Control – Roadside Spraying in Rural Areas Registration of Non-Spray Areas
Waimea College information evening
Tasman District Council’s roading maintenance contractor is responsible for vegetation control within the road reserve. This includes the use of knock-down, residual and brushweed herbicides to remove vegetation growing in the roadway and around street furniture. The contractor is also responsible for control of pest plants and other noxious weeds such as gorse, fennel, hemlock, blackberry, broom, bracken, purple pampas grass and box thorn. Residents can request that their rural property frontage not be chemically sprayed and instead undertake the vegetation control themselves. On approval Council will mark the no spray area with red marker pegs. Rural residents who choose the “no spray” option must control the vegetation growth along their property frontage to ensure road users are not impeded and all roadside signs and markers are clearly visible. Vegetation height should not exceed 300mm. Any stormwater drainage ditches need to be kept clear of excess vegetation. At intersections vegetation must be kept well clear to ensure good sight lines for traffic using the intersection. If you wish to apply for your property to be added to the “No Spray” list, please contact Robyn Scherer, Engineering Secretary, Tasman District Council, Phone 03 543 8524 or email – robyn. scherer@tasman.govt.nz.
Waimea College Information Evening for Parents of Students Entering Year 9 in 2013, An information evening will be held on Tuesday 17 July 2012 at 7.00 pm in the Waimea College Hall. This is an opportunity for parents to hear how our school is organised, our support systems and expectations and to meet in small groups in a question/answer session.
Notice of meeting – Richmond Residents Association Tuesday 24 July 2012, 7.30pm, Richmond Recreation Centre/Richmond Town Hall (Small Meeting Room).
Notice of Annual General Meeting Mapua and Districts Community Association Monday 13 August 2012 at 7.00 pm – Mapua Community Hall (supper room). Following the agm, a public forum will be held as part of a general meeting of the association – everyone welcome!

Roadside Spraying Contractors employed by New Zealand Transport Agency undertake an ongoing vegetation control programme to ensure that roadside vegetation does not affect the safety or operation of the region’s state highway network. This programme includes the spraying of chemical herbicides including the following active ingredients: Glyphosate, Metsulfuron, Terbuthylazine and Triclopyr. Persons wishing to register their property as a ‘no-spray’ zone, which requires a commitment to maintain a property’s highways frontage to specifications provided by NZTA, may do so by contacting Stephanie Lawlor or Donna Hills on 548 1099 at Opus International Consultants, c/- Private Bag 36, Nelson.
Motueka Aerodrome Management and Development Plans The Council has prepared a management plan and a development plan for Motueka Aerodrome and is now inviting the community to comment on those plans. The plans are available on the Council website www.tasman.govt.nz/policy/public-consultation Copies are also available from Council offices and Libraries at Motueka and Richmond. The purposes of the plans are to coordinate the aerodromes use, operations, maintenance and developments safely, efficiently and in cooperation with the aerodrome operators. The management plan addresses issues such as permitted and discretionary uses of the aerodrome, management objectives, conditions for the operation of businesses, environmental as well as health and safety issues. The development plan sets out the parameters of acceptable growth for the aerodrome including the provision of proposed development areas including criteria for any future buildings etc. There will not be a hearing to consider submissions. Once the Council has considered written submissions, the plans will be finalised and placed on the Council website. This process should be completed by the end of August 2012. Submissions to these plans will be received up until 4.00 pm Friday 13 July 2012, and should be addressed to: Submission on Motueka Aerodrome Management and Development Plans Tasman District Council Private Bag 4 Richmond 7050 Or may be emailed to mamdsubmission@tasman.govt.nz Submission forms may be downloaded from the Council website or may be obtained from the Council offices or Libraries at Richmond or Motueka. These plans do not cover activities outside the envelope of the aerodrome. While an increase or decrease in future activity at the aerodrome may impact on the numbers and frequency of aircraft using the airspace in and around the aerodrome, the use of the airspace is not addressed in these plans as the Council in its role as owner and operator of the aerodrome does not control airspace. Submissions should focus on the information provided (or not provided) in the plans and while consequential matters may be considered by the Council when reviewing submissions, issues such as flight paths, flying areas or pilot behaviour, where the Council does not have control, are unlikely to be considered.

We are your one stop decorating shop Building trust one room at a time To the team at Colourplus I have recently dealt with Helen from your Nelson shop and I cannot speak highly enough of her excellent service and help she provided to me with the supply of blinds for our tenanted property. Helen was a pleasure to deal with and impressed with her style of communication and giving helpful advice. Helen also went the extra mile to help us get the blinds installed quickly as she understood the urgency for us with our new tenants which we were extremely grateful for. Helen is a great asset to your company and I will certainly be recommending your company to anyone I come in contact with for household furnishings, etc. And Helen will be the person I seek to contact when we do more refurbishments at our home. Please pass on my personal thanks to Helen. Regards Trisha Strickland
