The Kelly family continued its winning way at the Logger Sports at Higgins Park in Pigeon Valley on Saturday with Nigel Kelly and niece Sarah Heath teaming up with Sarah’s brother Jesse and partner Travis Fisher to retain their King of the Forest crown. Last year, Nigel and Sarah combined with Brian Heslop and Daniel Jenkins to win the race which features wire rope splicing, chainsaw assembly, delimbing and log cutting and splitting. On Saturday, Nigel, Sarah, Jesse and Travis showed the Kelly clan still had the edge, winning their heats before cutting down MCH’s crew of Sam Dixon, Andy Waters, Caleb Russ and Brent Searle in the final to win the Winston Allnutt Memorial Trophy. “This is my second year and my second time winning,” Sarah says. “It’s a family thing, I’m a Kelly and granddad (Rex) runs it - I like the atmosphere and I love the competition.” The winning team members each won a voucher for $600 worth of Stihl products from Stihl New Zealand, while MCH received vouchers from Stihl Shop Richmond. Nigel also recorded the fastest time in the wire rope splicing, sponsored by Bowater Toyota. The Tasman district’s wine and food were showcased during Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall’s royal visit to the region last Saturday. The royal couple headed out to Mahana Estates after a public walkabout in Nelson, a visit to Nelson’s Cawthron Institute and World of WearableArt. They enjoyed a food and wine event at Mahana where they chatted easily with some of the region’s top wine, cheese and seafood producers. Judy Finn of nearby Neudorf Vineyards, had a long chat with Camilla who is President of the United Kingdom Vineyards Association. Judy says she congratulated the Duchess on the increasing strength of English wines. “They’ve just won a taste-off between the French - between Champagne and English sparkling wine, which they won and that’s what I said congratulations for,” Judy says. Mahana Winery owner Glenn Schaeffer says it was a huge honour hosting the Royal couple. “There’s something about the monarchy that stands above all else. To have the future King of England here, and the Duchess - it’s just a tremendous honour for us,” he says. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne, who joined Charles and Camilla at Mahana Estates, says it was “an honour and a privilege to meet and host their royal highnesses”.
