The Kelly family continued its winning way at the Logger Sports at Higgins Park in Pigeon Valley on Saturday with Nigel Kelly and niece Sarah Heath teaming up with Sarah’s brother Jesse and partner Travis Fisher to retain their King of the Forest crown. Last year, Nigel and Sarah combined with Brian Heslop and Daniel Jenkins to win the race which features wire rope splicing, chainsaw assembly, delimbing and log cutting and splitting. On Saturday, Nigel, Sarah, Jesse and Travis showed the Kelly clan still had the edge, winning their heats before cutting down MCH’s crew of Sam Dixon, Andy Waters, Caleb Russ and Brent Searle in the final to win the Winston Allnutt Memorial Trophy. “This is my second year and my second time winning,” Sarah says. “It’s a family thing, I’m a Kelly and granddad (Rex) runs it - I like the atmosphere and I love the competition.” The winning team members each won a voucher for $600 worth of Stihl products from Stihl New Zealand, while MCH received vouchers from Stihl Shop Richmond. Nigel also recorded the fastest time in the wire rope splicing, sponsored by Bowater Toyota. The Pigeon Valley Steam Museum also hosted a Steam Logging Spectacular at Higgins Park on Sunday, featuring logging displays from yesteryear. It included tree-felling using axes and cross-cut saws with the logs taken to the

The Tasman district’s wine and food were showcased during Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall’s royal visit to the region last Saturday. The royal couple headed out to Mahana Estates after a public walkabout in Nelson, a visit to Nelson’s Cawthron Institute and World of WearableArt. They enjoyed a food and wine event at Mahana where they chatted easily with some of the region’s top wine, cheese and seafood producers. Judy Finn of nearby Neudorf Vineyards, had a long chat with Camilla who is President of the United Kingdom Vineyards Association. Judy says she congratulated the Duchess on the increasing strength of English wines. “They’ve just won a taste-off between the French - between Champagne and English sparkling wine, which they won and that’s what I said congratulations for,” Judy says. Mahana Winery owner Glenn Schaeffer says it was a huge honour hosting the Royal couple. “There’s something about the monarchy that stands above all else. To have the future King of England here, and the Duchess - it’s just a tremendous honour for us,” he says. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne, who joined Charles and Camilla at Mahana Estates, says it was “an honour and a privilege to meet and host their royal highnesses”.

“They shouldn’t sell fireworks to private individuals because it’s too dangerous and a fire risk. Public fireworks displays are the answer - they are much better anyway.”

“They are a lot of fun and we should let our kids enjoy the fun we had when we were growing up. It’s only a few people who ruin it for the rest.”

It won’t be so easy to miss Richmond when two new welcome signs are erected on Gladstone Rd and the Richmond Deviation next week. The signs have been commissioned by Richmond Unlimited which has been driving the project in conjunction with the Tasman District Council and New Zealand Transport Agency. They were initially designed by Nelson graphic design company HotHouse about two years ago and after “a huge process” are ready to go. Richmond Unlimited’s Toni Lane says the signs are long overdue because the existing welcome signs are well past their use by date. The new signs are aimed at putting Richmond on the map and attracting travellers into the town - the project has been funded by Richmond Unlimited, the TDC and NZTA. “People don’t know where Richmond is,” Toni says. “Visitors potentially drive straight on past so we need something to bring them into the town. “We got the concept plans from HotHouse and over the next two years we played with the

Getting ready for summer

Here’s some stories from www. Pharmacy burglar appears in court: Following the pharmacy burglary that appeared in last week’s Waimea Weekly, a 30-year-old man has been charged in relation to burglaries at the Queen Street Pharmacy in Richmond on October 28 and a pharmacy in Nelson on October 23. The man appeared in the Nelson District Court on Monday.

Distressed swimmer was a seal: Police, Nelson Surf Life Saving Club, the Coastguard and a helicopter were called to the Port on Thursday night in search of a seal. Police said an informant on the Port Hills called in at 7:30, saying there was a swimmer in the water near the entrance to the Cut, being dragged out to sea and calling for help. An hour later, another member of the public came forward, saying they saw a seal in the same location during the same time. With the light fading, the search was called off at 9 pm, police coming to the conclusion that the swimmer was, in fact, a seal.

Just before the crash, police had received phone calls from a concerned motorist about a man on a bike, who was riding in a way that “caused some concern”. Drone shot down over speedway: A drone filming the Nelson Speedway last week was shot from the sky. Sherlock Vision and the Nelson Speedway Association were shocked by the shooting of a drone at the speedway’s popular family-friendly event on October 31. “We were concerned when the live feed from our drone suddenly stopped towards the end of the fireworks display at the end of the speedway event,” says Sherlock Vision co-owner Geoff Sherlock. “Fortunately, we were able to manually land it away from spectators. The outcome could have been so much worse if the drone had landed amongst the crowd or if the shot fired had hit someone.” Nelson Police are currently investigating the incident. Murchison invaded by military Murchison was ‘under siege’ this week as hundreds of New Zealand Army soldiers moved into the town to combat rebel militia forces that had invaded the area. At least, that’s the scenario being played out by the New Zealand Defence Forces as part of their month-long Southern Katipo training exercise launched this week. The defence forces have been deployed to combat rebel militia causing problems near the Matakitaki River. Later, they will encounter civil unrest at Dip Flat airfield near St Arnaud. Southern Katipo will involve around 2000 defence force personnel from New Zealand and around the world as well as aircraft, helicopters and light armoured vehicles.

Best friends take top awards NEWs Simon Bloomberg

Two students who have been good friends since they attended Richmond Primary School together have been named as Waimea College’s outstanding scholars for 2015. Brittany Dick and Sami Jordan, both 17, received the top awards at the senior academic prizegiving last Wednesday. Brittany was named Dux while Sami received Proxime Accessit, the second highest academic award. Brittany had been awarded prizes for Classical Studies, the Deanna Waters Cup for Media Studies and the Senior Languages Cup earlier in the prizegiving ceremony. Sami won the Biology and Chemistry prizes as well as the Network Tasman Award and AICA NZ Award. “This is a real highlight,” Brittany says. “It’s hard to top this” Although Brittany and Sami worked hard for their academic success, they both say the teachers at Waimea College can also take a lot of the credit. “The teachers are so helpful and friendly,” Brittany says. “It’s really cool to have teachers who are there to support you in your education and everything else.” Proud mum Natalie Dick says they are thrilled with Brittany’s success because she “had worked so hard at school”. It also appears that Brittany works hard around home too, with Natalie saying “she cooks all the meals around here, so we’re going to miss her so much when she goes

Brittany has Maori heritage and is interested in studying Maori culture when she returns to New Zealand. Katie Thompson was awarded the Janet Hunt Cup for General Excellence for Girls while Elliott Kennedy won the K Anderson Cup for General Excellence for Boys. Ben Karalus and Hal Sellers shared the Principal’s Award for Academic Excellence. The

guest speaker at the prizegiving was former Waimea College student Floyd Thomas who encouraged students to work hard and always maintain a positive attitude. Floyd told the students it is also important to “find your strengths” and make the most of those strengths to “have a fun and exciting life”. Principal Scott Haines paid tribute to the students and school staff, board and parents for another good year at Waimea College. He also made a special mention of Peter Guilliard who was retiring after 37 years of teaching.

AQUATHON: The Richmond Aquatic Centre is hosting an aquathon as part of a worldwide event to raise funds for Breast Cancer this Saturday from 9am to 11am. All the centre’s instructors have donated their time to teach the fundraising aquathon class while the pool space is proving the facility for free so that all the proceeds of the $10 admission cost can be donated to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. NETWORK TASMAN DEED: Written submissions to proposed changes to Network Tasman Trust’s deed can be lodged at Craig Anderson at 270A Queen St by 5pm on November 21 and will be made available for public inspection at Craig Anderson and online from midday on Monday November 23. Petrolheads flock to V4 & Rotary With bases booming and engines revving, the V4 & Rotary South Island Champs came to a close on Sunday night. The weekend was petrolhead heaven with drag racing at the Motueka Airfield, a Show and Shine competition and a jet car for a bit of extra excitement. John McMillan brought his Mazda RX7 series 4 all the way up from Christchurch. “It’s probably one of the best weekends, I look forward to it annually.” John has towed his car up for the weekend three years in row and says it’s

always a great event. Saturday’s racing saw around 50 cars and motorcycles lined up on the drag strip to fight for the title of the fastest vehicle. The event gave car enthusiasts an excuse to do smokey burnouts and prove they had the best engine on the tarmac. Around 4000 people showed up to watch the vehicles go head-to-head and check out all the different cars and motorcycles. Saturday’s Show and Shine featured over 50 cars from a variety of classes being judged and displayed in the Saxton Stadium. Car owners spent hours beforehand, ensuring their cars

were pristine for the judges and the hundreds of Nelsonians who packed into the Saxton Stadium. The day included DB drag racing, Dyno runs, a jet car fire show and the official prizegiving. V4 & Rotary promoter, Azhar Bhamji, says it was the biggest turnout they’ve had in Nelson. “The event has been amazing, we’ve had more cars here than the last two years.” Azhar says he hopes V4 & Rotary will be back for more events next year. “This is the end of our three year deal with the venue as well as with the drag racing, but let’s not say that this is the last you’ll see of us.”

Twilight gala the best yet

Wakefield School may have hosted its best twilight gala yet after a successful turnout on Saturday evening. The gala has been a popular community event for several years with families coming along to enjoy the many activities, entertainment and food. From the gumboot toss and horizontal bungy to the inflatable climbing wall and motorbike rides, children and their parents appeared to be soaking up the fun and the sun. Organisers were thrilled with the number of people who came along to support the school and gala

coordinator Sonia Emerson says they’re “pretty sure it’s the best one yet.” Although a final figure hasn’t been calculated, Sonia says the proceeds will be going towards the development of a new outdoor area. Wakefield School has created the Great Outdoors Steering Committee, incorporating teachers, parents and students, to research and decide on what the outdoor area should include. Wakefield School would like to say a huge thank you to sponsors, the local community, and everyone else who made the twilight gala a success.

Who doesn’t like strawberries? Especially the ones you’ve grown yourself Strawberries are sun-loving plants that will thrive in sunny conditions and well drained soil. They love plenty of good compost dug in and when your plants begin to flower, then is the time to apply fertiliser and mulch around your plants. By keeping your fruit off the soil, it will help to avoid diseases and rotting. Strawberry plants need to be watered regularly for good growth, but when the strawberries begin to turn red, reduce their water to avoid soft fruit with little flavour. Strawberries are susceptible to a number of pests and diseases which can be controlled by several chemical sprays. However, if you are like me and would prefer a more

Spring garden trail

Gardening enthusiasts will be able to take a leisurely “stroll” around over 100 gardens when residents of Waimea Village hold their A Salute to Spring garden trail this Saturday. One of the organisers, Raewyn Inglis says, many of the village residents “work very hard on their small gardens” and the trail will be an opportunity for people to see the results of that work. Visitors will also be able to enjoy a Devonshire Tea as part of the $3 entry fee, as well as purchase sweets, cookies, cakes, pickles, preserves, produce and plants. Raewyn, who has organised the event with Marion Crengle and Ethel Murdoch, says they would like people to come and see the gardens and the “wonderful community” of Waimea Village. All proceeds from the trail will go towards the residents committee which helps look after the grounds. The trail will be held this Saturday from 10am to 1pm. Visitors can drive into the Waimea Village entrance at 125 Gladstone Rd.

mentioned three props, that’s because I was a tight head prop. They probably don’t. Please understand that these were great All Blacks just like Richie and Dan, but now they are generally forgotten. What I am trying to remind folk is that our life and our achievements, no matter how great, are fleeting. We are here today, gone tomorrow. 70, 80, 90 years is not long to live, really. The Bible reminds us of this many times, like in Psalm 103:15-16, where God says to us that “ Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die. The wind blows, and we are gone—as though we had never been here.” Now this all sounds a little morbid, but friends it’s reality. Let’s get real, all that we are and all that we work for and strive for will one day be forgotten. Now friends, Jesus, knowing the transitory nature of this world, encouraged us to invest in things eternal. Jesus made it clear that the best is yet to come for those who invest in the eternal. I want to ask you have you seriously thought about life after death? The Bible has a great deal to say about this, and I want to encourage each and every reader that you owe it to yourselves, and your children, to investigate this matter. Delayed gratification is not a concept that this modern world buys into- but for those who understand it, it’s priceless! Hope you have a blessed week and an extra-blessed eternity.

Last week’s solutions

David Jensen, senior pastor, Richmond Baptist Church. Did you watch the rugby? What an awesome game. I thought it was so fitting that this brilliant, hard-working All Black team stamped their mark on the history books. And what about that Ma’a Nonu try? Outstanding. Beauden Barrett’s try wasn’t too shabby either. I must confess that I was a bit worried when the Australians started to fight back, but this challenge showed the quality of this great All Black team to endure. Years back, when I was a younger man, I got to go to the first Rugby World Cup final. The club I played for in Auckland, Northcote, somehow got officiating rights and so all I had to do was show people to their seats and then I got to watch. That was a brilliant game. I think my favourite part of that game was when David Kirk ducked under the arms of Eric Champ. Kirk sprinted like a madman and then got tackled. Wayne Shelford popped the ball up into the arms of John Kirwan, try in the corner- oh yeah. At the moment we are caught up in names like McCaw, Nonu, Mealamu, Woodcock, Carter and Smith, but fast-forward a couple of hundred years and will they just be names? Ask your kids if they know who Waka Nathan is? How about Gary Knight? Ron Jarden? Kevin Skinner? Wilson Whineray? Notice I

When you are next looking to shop, take time to think about why you should, and where you can shop locally, as opposed to shopping on line or from a national chain store. Shopping locally is important for a several reasons, from the number of local jobs it can create and the product knowledge and quality service local businesses can supply their customers, to the moral grounds of choosing business owners who have put in an incredible amount of time, money and effort to create their enterprise. One of the most important reasons to support a local business though, is to recognise and support their contribution to our local community. It’s common knowledge that small, local businesses are what drive a community, not the huge corporations. When money is spent locally and passes through many local hands more people are able to benefit from it. It can be very hard nowadays to keep money in ‘Most Recognised’ in the 2015local officecommunity awards. when we are constantly bombarded with

thousands of corporate advertisements telling us that cheapness is important above all else, leading us to overlook the values that independent businesses provide us, both as shoppers and in our community. When people shop locally, they keep money flowing around their community and it creates opportunities for local businesses to give back to those who support them, which is something to think about next time your child’s sports team, school or club needs sponsorship. Local business owners aren’t just involved in supporting the community financially, but in person too, giving up their time to coach sports teams and often using their business premises to do good for local causes such as letting people run sausage sizzles and other fundraising activities. There are examples all over Richmond of local businesses giving back to the community. Andrew McGlashen from McGlashen Pharmacy has for the past six years offered up a scholarship worth $1000. “I

wanted to make an amount available that was enough to make a difference to a young person with their sport or art or academia. It goes to anyone who excels in their chosen field and we’ve had a wide range of recipients over the years. It’s the community that keeps us open as a business so you’ve got to give something back and I thoroughly enjoy doing it too,” says Andrew. Stihl Shop Richmond owners, Grant and Jo Blanchet, are proud to give back to their community too, sponsoring and supporting, amongst many other things, both Waimea Old Boys and Wanderers rugby clubs, the Logging Sports, Totaradale and Greenacres golf clubs, plus, Grant gives his time to coach a college rugby team. “Along the way I’ve had some good people who have been very influential in my life, including coaches and other people in business, and we’d like to be like minded and give back to the community that supports us,” says Grant. “If someone doesn’t sponsor these things, then they won’t happen,” says

Craig Hamilton and thanks to Mike Pero locally in Richmond, many more organisations are able to continue their great services. Mike Pero are proud to sponsor the Nelson Giants, local kart sport, Tasman Tennis and Tasman Swimming. The Sprig and Fern Tavern in Brightwater also support their local community. Every week they host fundraising Quiz nights and through these quizzes, Kevin and his team have helped local organisations raise well in excess of $60,000. New to Richmond, the Fit Superstore is already supporting locals through sponsorship. Already they are helping International Powerlifter, Michelle Welsh achieve her goal of attending the next Commonwealth Games in Vancouver as well as sponsoring the Strongman Challenge

being held at the upcoming A & P Show. Maree and her team at Super Liquor Richmond are staunch supporters of local community events. They are Major sponsors of the Nelson Tigers Stockcar team, Waimea Old Boys Rugby Club, Richmond Rabbits League team and regularly supply prizes for local quiz nights, raffles and fundraisers. To date the Fresh Choice Richmond Community Fund has given $95,250 to local individuals and organisations who apply in store for either a $500 or $1000 contribution. They also sponsor Richmond Athletics and Tasman Wheelers and donate a considerable amount to local schools and organisations holding fairs and running raffles. ger businesses. This coming weekend Eyebright will showcase locally produced garden art, and they are providing prize money for the winning entries, as well as running the auction where the art will be sold with all proceeds going back to the artisans. With Christmas coming up, gift buying is about to be one of the most important things on everyone’s to do list, but before you pull up outside your local big box retailer, ready to get all your shopping over and done with, take some time to check out the great range and quality of products your local business owners have to offer first. Don’t think you’re too small to make a difference - every purchase made with a local retailer is a step towards a better community economy and a unique identity for the town we live in.

info@tcvet.co.nz www.tcvet.co.nz Victoria University landscape architecture student Zak White explains his concept plans to Wakefield’s Alix Rimmer, left, and Sarah Bowron at the exihibition at Wakefield School. Concept plans for Wakefield unveiled Victoria University landscape architecture students have given Wakefield residents plenty to think about after the students displayed their concept plans for the town at an exhibition at Wakefield School. Twenty-six students visited Wakefield last July to conduct their initial studies of the town’s streets, walkways, parks and buildings. They returned on October 30 to present their plans for the future of the town at a three-day exhibition and Wakefield School principal and Focus Wakefield member Peter Verstappen says the students presented some exciting ideas. Peter was particularly impressed with plans to enhance the village green which he says was “a bit of grass surrounded by car parks.” “We need to clear out all the traffic and turn it into a genuine village green where people want to go and sit. At the moment, more people are

using it as a place to sell their cars.” Wakefield resident Don Everitt says Wakefield “has huge potential” and the students’ plans showed some really creative ways to realise that potential. “The village needs to be turned into something a lot more than just an entrance into Wakefield and these plans show how we can do that,” Don says. “I really like plans to integrate the Wai-iti River into the town and develop parklands in some of the subdivisions. “The students have also identified that State Highway 6 is a big factor. It divides the town and the students have got some good ideas for getting over or under it or slowing the traffic down to make it safer for pedestrians.” Peter says the next step was for Focus Wakefield, Wakefield residents and the Tasman District Council, “which has been very supportive”, to “drive some of the ideas forward”. They planned to form a working party to identify the best concept plans and try and turn them into a reality. “Some of these concept plans, like the ones for the village green, are very do-able. It would be nice to identify those ones and start with them because they are not a massive investment.”

Rural Mail Wakefield Preschool Farm trips provide many benefits to young children and the Wakefield Preschool dairy farm excursion was a great way for the children to see where the milk they drink comes from and learn a little more about life as a dairy farmer. Farmer Brian Dineen talked to the children about the cows

on the farm and how they harvest the milk from them. By the end of their farm adventure everyone knew about the special machine that sucks the milk from the cows, and where it was then taken. Most of the milk goes to the Fonterra truck which then delivers the milk to Fonterra for processing so it can be sold in the supermarket

Some milk is made into cheese, ice-cream, yogurt and flavoured milk. What a fun educational adventure on the farm. A huge Thank you to Dineen’s Family, Fonterrra, the centre’s parents, whanau and caregivers and Wakefield Preschool for all the support that made this farm excursion a fun learning experience for everyone.

The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board has refurbished its facilities at Alexandra Hospital in Richmond where it runs an inpatient older person service designed to cater for dementia and older persons’ mental health assessment. The hospital remained open during the yearlong refurbishments and the beautiful grounds have been retained. Pictured at Friday’s ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the completion of the upgrade are, from left, NMDHB staff Kate Robson, Bert Wilkinson, Peter Krammer, Chris Fleming, Nathan Davis, Megan McQuarrie, Craig Fenwick and Tracey Harrington. Police open day a ‘huge success’ The Nelson Police Station opened its doors to the public on Sunday. The open day saw hundreds of families lining up to go into the jail cells, challenge themselves on the police obstacle course, hop into police cars and fire trucks, check out the police taser, riot gear, and guns, watch firemen rip open a car, meet Pyro the police dog and many more activities. Two of the more hard-out participants were 10 year-old Tor Vanderplas and 11 year-old Riley Smithers. “It was pretty fun, but he beat me by three seconds,” says Tor pointing at Riley.

Police communications manager Barbara Dunn says the day was a hit. “It went fantastic, it was a huge success from our perspective, with lots of engagement, lots of questions, lots of people trying things out and getting information.” “The public really enjoyed it, we’ve had enormous feedback from people on the day, coming up and chatting to us and via social media.” Most of the kids who went say the obstacle course and police cells were their favourite parts.

As we are all aware, we have some fantastic fishing opportunities right on our very doorstep, here in 'Sunny Nelson’. Every now and again it's worth venturing out a little further and experience something different. One of my all time favourites is picturesque Fiordland. Over Labour Weekend we took a trip to Doubtful Sound, staying in a DOC hut on Secretary Island. To get to Deep Cove, the gateway to Doubtful Sound, you first have to cross Lake Manapouri and then tow the boat across Wilmot Pass on the other side of the lake. The journey over Wilmont is an adventure on its own, with waterfalls, sheer cliffs along a steep narrow windy gravel road that often has snow at the peak. A few days earlier there was

heavy rain which flooded the bridge across the Mica Burn. I might be good for telling stories, but believe me, if something blows out in Fiordland, it truly is impressive. The environment below the water in Fiordland is as unique as its acclaimed landscape above. Due to the tea-stained fresh water layer you can see black corals in less than 40m of water. Over the next five days we gorged ourselves on crayfish, caught blue cod as big as a dive tank and pulled grouper out of 40m depth, but what really makes the place special is the total remoteness and untamed but fragile wilderness and then to be able to share it with the local population of penguins, whales, dolphins and birds.

Funding is needed to keep a water safety programme afloat that helps former refugees in Nelson and Tasman enjoy, and stay safe around, the region's beaches, rivers and swimming pools. The majority of refugees who settle in Nelson don't have any knowledge of water safety because they come from regions that don't have beaches, rivers or lakes. Victory Community Centre's Katie Hughes indentified a need to teach these new Nelsonians water safety and initiated the programme with the help from Red Cross, the Richmond Aquatic Centre, Port Nelson, Todd Foundation and a loyal group of volunteers. But the funding for the programme, which started at the beginning of this year, is

running out, and Richmond Aquatic Centre swim school manager Lisa Stove is desperate to keep it going. Lisa says the programme has received a great response from the refugee community and plays a big role in keeping them safe around water. "We held the first session earlier this year and 40 of them turned up. It's been making a huge difference to these people and we'd love to keep it going. "We have ladies who come along and they are frightened about even getting into the water with a life jacket. A lot of them come from landlocked countries like Bhutan and they've never been in water deeper than their waist, so it's not surprising they are so scared." Lisa says the water safety programme covers boat safety, fitting and wearing life jack-

ets, swimming in clothing and learning to float and retrieve someone from the water. They also get "thrown in the wave pool to get a real live beach experience" and are encouraged to take 'learn to swim' classes. Refugee Bijay Pradhan says the classes are "really helping us develop our swimming skills, and helps us survive. It’s a great way to hang out with friends, too." At 51, Bishnu Adhikari is learning to swim for the first time and says "it means I can help my kids learn too". "Swimming is important for everybody in New Zealand. I love it." Lisa says the funding is needed to cover the costs of a coordinator, transport to the pool and pool admission and swim school staff which the Richmond Aquatic Centre provides at a discount.

Scholarship sends Waimea student to US Record number Simon Bloomberg who has been making good for sea swim Sami Jordan comprogress under the astute guidWaimea College student Sami Jordan will be pursuing her academic and running future in the US after gaining an athletic scholarship at Maryville University in St Louis, Missouri. Sami, who plans to study biochemical engineering at Maryville University for three years before finishing her degree at Washington University in St Louis, signed up for the scholarship last Wednesday. That capped a big day for the 17-year-old who had earlier received the second highest academic honour at the Waimea College prizegiving. “We started looking at schools that matched academically and athletically back in June and Maryville looked perfect,” Sami says. “It has a good running team - they have recruited really well for next year and think they could have a chance of making the national champs in two or three years.” The talented 1500m, 3000m and cross-country runner,

ance of Greg Lautenslager, says she is likely to focus on racing the longer distances at Maryville. She has already spoken with her future coach, Mickey Kaufmen, and he is keen to see her try the 3000m steeplechase and step up to 5000m and 10,000m on the track. Sami will also have to adjust to a more demanding racing schedule with a big emphasis on indoor track meetings on the US collegiate circuit. She will start her scholarship in August right in the middle of the indoor and cross-country season. “In New Zealand, we only have the track season in summer and cross-country in winter but the indoor track season is really big in the US. It will be a full-on year of racing.” Although Sami doesn’t join the Maryville track team until August, she plans to start following a new training programme devised by Mickey after nationals in March.

The popularity of the Port Nelson Sea Swim series continued on Thursday when a record 162 swimmers took the plunge in the opening race of the 2015-2016 series. Garin College student Thomas Heaton showed good early season speed to win the long course race held over 800m in 8min 38sec. Thomas led a group of teenaged swimmers home with Waimea College triathlete Hayden Squance second 18 seconds back and last year's series winner Luke Kelly third in 9min 27sec. Caitlin Delany was the fastest female, finishing fifth overall to win the 16-19 age group in 9min 34sec. For more info and full results go to nelsonseaswims.co.nz

Mountainbikers take on Kaiteriteri

Wayne Pool

The Nelson Mountain Bike Club held two of its series races last week with round three of the Evening World Series Super D in the Maitai Valley on Thursday and round four of the Cross Country Series at Kaiteriteri on Sunday. The Super D numbers, although still impressive at 105 riders, were down on the previous two events in the series, probably due to the more challenging course through the Matai and Supplejack tracks. Under-15 riders began their runs first with Max Singleton showing good pace to take a class win with a time of 11min 45sec. Cameron Jones showed it was no fluke he was fastest on the down hill section of

the recent Milk and Honey Race by winning under-17 category. The women were next out of the blocks showing they had the skills to match the challenge of this tough run. Master 1 rider Amanda Pearse almost broke the 12 minute mark with the fastest run to keep ahead of Olivia Johnston and Alice Baker. Master 3 winner Nick Kirby set the new “time to beat” with an 11min 4sec. Dean Fulton showed he is not only very quick on a road bike but has the skills to ride a tough downhill at speed to win Masters 2 in a time of 10min 24sec. Masters 1 Maestro Kurt Lancaster showed why he is Nelson’s current Top Gun with his 9min 59sec the first run of the night to break the magical 10 minute mark.

Possibly the most exciting battle of the day was the senior woman section, with Katie Roddiss staying just ahead of Hannah Feely until the last lap when Hannah found something extra and put down her quickest lap last to take the class win. Zoe King completed her three laps in 1hr 6min to win Masters 1 ahead of Suzie Wood. Kiel Boynton’s travel from Blenheim was rewarded with a win in Masters 1, while Jake Stow claimed the Masters 2 win with some very quick times for his three laps. Brenda Clapp was the Masters 3 women's winner, Cliff Bowman won the Masters 3 men with Warren Algie showing he still has some pace in his legs to take the 60-plus group.

Sunday bought the area’s cross country elite across to Kaiteriteri where the course consisted of a serious climb at the start, followed by a tight twisting single track and some technical downhill. Henry Jaine set a frenetic pace, closely followed by Chris Sharland who had claimed a second in the previous day’s Source to Sea. Henry set a consistent 18 minute lap time for his five laps that no-one else could match, to take the overall. Cameron Jones posted the second fastest lap times which gave him a comfortable win in the under-17 section. Finding a spiritual home Although I grew up in Cornwall with the ruins of a Celtic monastery on my doorstep, it was not until many years later that a book I picked up in Dunedin introduced me to Celtic Spirituality — and immediately I felt I had come home.

For me, Celtic Spirituality is like a pair of old shoes. My feet slip easily into the well-worn grooves, and I can trust them to take me safely on my spiritual journey through life. Jean Palmer — church member

What was it that attracted me?

The Celts lived in a world where the spiritual and material were closely intertwined. They had a strong sense of God’s presence in his creation and wrote simple poetry celebrating creation’s wonder and beauty. Long before St Francis, the Celtic saints were caring for the natural world. St Kevin remained with his arms outstretched until some blackbird eggs laid in his palm were fully hatched. Whatever we make of stories like this, for me, they challenge us to see living in a more ecologically responsible way as part of our Christian spirituality.

For the Celtic Christians, there was no distinction between sacred and secular, every part of the daily and seasonal rhythm of life was marked with prayer. Ordinary men and women would be praying as they went about their everyday tasks. There was a prayer for rekindling the fire in the morning and for damping it down at night; a prayer for milking, or weaving, or fishing. God was not a distant being but near at hand and involved in every aspect of their lives. It encourages me to think of prayers I could say as I go through my daily routine — taking a shower, cooking a meal, logging on to the computer — you get the idea.

Working together Church on the Hill sits at the end of Cambridge Street opposite Richmond Primary School. This central and raised site reminds us of the importance of faith communities in our larger community. The church enjoys great relationships with so many groups, agencies and individuals in Richmond. We know that a large number of people regard the church as ‘our church’ whether or not they are regular attenders. We love this! “Our church” works with our wider community in many ways including community lunches, youth group, chaplaincy services, budget advice, playgroup, and caring for the elderly.

Family Service To work more effectively together we plan to replace the inadequate and decrepit old hall with a new church and community facility called the Lantern. It’s going to cost a lot of money – the church community has raised over $800,000 and we hope our wider community will help us raise the other half. We’re aiming to start building in 2016.

How can you work with us? You could offer us building materials at cost price or give a discount, make a financial donation, or offer your musclepower once we start. We’d love to hear your ideas and how we could work together to make the Lantern a great space for our community to share. Give us a shout church.onhill@xtra.co.nz or 544 8844, Susan Gill

Weekly meter readings re-commenced for the summer irrigation season from Monday 26 October 2015. Community Notices With the busy season arriving, volunteers are urgently required to work three hour shifts on a weekly or fortnightly basis at the Information Centre in Gladstone Road. Successful applicants would be required to work with more experienced volunteers initially before being asked to work on their own. Although applicants should preferably have a good knowledge of the local community, this is not necessary, as the Centre has a large data base. They should be well presented and enjoy meeting and conversing with visitors from all over New Zealand and the world. The Centre is well appointed with good facilities. If you are interested in this type of work, call in to the Centre or Ph. 03 543 9521 or Sally Symonds Ph. 03 542 3983 (rosters) for further details. Authorised by Keith Chaplin, Volunteer co-ordinator, Ph. 03 547 3116.
