Richmond band sign US deal Nelson musical duo Broods have inked an international record deal, setting them up for world-wide stardom. Caleb and Georgia Nott, both former Garin College students, were in Los Angeles on Thursday to sign a deal with Capitol Records in the US and Polydor in the UK. The two labels will be jointly releasing Broods’ debut EP in February and a full length album in August. Capitol Records is one of the world’s leading record companies and boasts an alum-

Broods’ first single “Bridges” has already reached 300,000 views on their Sound Cloud page and received frequent airplay on New Zealand radio stations within just

one month of its release. The track is also receiving early play on KCRW in Los Angeles and Radio 1 in the UK, sparking US music magazine Billboard to ask whether they were “New Zealand’s next pop wonder”. “Bridges” was produced by Joel Little, who will be helming Broods’ forthcoming EP and album. Joe’s work with Lorde has resulted in one of the year’s biggest singles and albums, with “Royals” and “Pure Heroine”, respectively.

Glen Common, the co-founder of Smokefreerockquest, says this was a pretty special occurrence that needs celebrating regardless of what happens from here. “Things could go huge for them and I really hope it does,” he says. “We bumped into them at the NZ Music Awards and they seemed very excited then. You could tell things were going very well for them.” SEE PAGE 2

Richmond band signs with US label FROM PAGE 1 Georgia was the lead singer of The Peasants when they won Rockquest in 2011 while Caleb played guitar the year prior when the band was called The Peasants of Eden and finished second at the national final. While the group had been performing together well before entering the secondary school music competition, Glen believes Smokefreerockquest gave them encouragement to keep going. “That’s probably the key. There are other musicians of a similar ilk but these guys have really stuck at it. They certainly had the talent, they got an opportunity and it looks like now they’ve got the ink signed on the paper.” Broods aren’t the first New Zealand artists to sign with an international record company, but Glenn says it certainly isn’t

At school he was an all rounder.” And while Georgia “played sport and things”, she was much more focused on her music and drama, John says. “She was into the arts and threw herself into it. She was also one of our school captains last year.” Music teacher Kyle Proffit, who managed The Peasants, had not spoken to Georgia and Caleb since signing the record deal, but he was well aware of its significance. “If you see how many New Zealand bands have been signed to Capitol Records then you’d realise this is a big deal. This is a very big contract for these kids eh,” he says. Other than an EP and album release, details on the record deal have been kept quiet.

Richmond’s busy shops a headache for Kindy drop off A parking problem outside Richmond Kindergarten should be resolved this week when the Tasman District Council erects five new time limit signs outside the kindy on Florence St. Teachers and parents at the kindy on the corner of Elizabeth and Florence streets have been walking up to 300 metres, often carrying young children in car seats, to the kindy because all the car parks have been taken. The lack of car parking becomes an issue leading up to every Christmas when staff at the Richmond Mall are instructed to vacate the mall car park so that it is freed up for customers. Kindy parent Melinda Baigent says the lack of car parking is not just an inconvenience. It is also creates a safety issue and that needs to be resolved. “I pick my two children up at 2.45pm and I’ll have to park 200 metres away. It’s really difficult for me but it’s worse for parents who have to drop off one child and have another sleeping in the car. “Usually they’d just park right outside and quickly take their children into the kindy and leave the other one sleeping but they can’t do that if they have to walk 200 metres. “We are also concerned about

It’s turned it into a narrow one-way street.” Teacher Kate Westrupp says she’s especially worried about all the grandparents who bring children into the kindy. “We have quite a few grandparents dropping off and picking up children and they might have to walk the length of Elizabeth St carrying young children in car seats,” she says. Kate says they have spoken to the Richmond Mall and Tasman District Council about the problem and this week council transportation engineer Steve Elkington confirmed five new P10 signs are going up outside the kindy on Florence St. “We met with the kindy about a month ago and issued con-

tracts for the road marking and signs. The road marking has been completed and the signs should go up today,” Steve said on Tuesday. Steve says they will monitor how the new parking restrictions work and modify the time limits if required. Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says it is mall policy to ask their retailers to park outside the mall car park every December when space was at a premium. Belinda says she sympathises with the kindergarten and hopes that installing 10 minute car parks will resolve the problem “We acknowledge that it is a frustration for them but I have so many customers complaining about the lack of car parks at this time of year,” she says.

Crusaders game just the ticket this summer Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz The most successful Super Rugby team in history is coming to town and it may be the start of more to come. The Crusaders are in talks with the Tasman Rugby Union to bring two of its Super Rugby games to Nelson in 2015. But first, organisers are hoping for a sell-out at Sportspark Motueka on Friday, February 7 when the Crusaders host their southern rivals, the Highlanders. Tickets are now on sale for the biggest rugby game to hit the region this summer as both teams will bring their entire squad to the region – including close to 20 All Blacks. Tickets went on sale on Monday but the game is expected to be a sell-out and tickets to the covered stand are already close to sold. Tasman Rugby Union CEO Tony Lewis says the game is a great opportunity for the region to show its support for the sport and encourage the Crusaders to bring more games here in 2015. “It’s absolutely crucial we get a huge crowd. They have two games that they have to take away from Christchurch because of the FIFA Under 20 World Cup and we

Waimea river all clear of toxic algae The Waimea River has been given the all clear after it was surveyed for toxic blue green algae although Tasman District Council staff will continue monitoring for the district's waterways for the algae which reached dangerous levels last summer. The council has been testing water quality weekly in a number of rivers around the district and so far it has found no signs of the algae which produces toxins that are poisonous to dogs and humans. But resource scientist Trevor James says they have been extra careful about monitoring the sites for the algae after it was found in the Maitai River in Nelson late

last month. Nelson City Council issued a warning advising people to keep out of the lower Maitai River after the algae was found in high levels. The algae was found from the Maitai Motor Camp downstream meaning that many of the Maitai's popular swimming holes will be out of bounds. Trevor says the algae usually only reached dangerous levels during periods of low flow in the summer so it was unusual to be found in high concentrations in the Maitai in November. He says Cawthron Institute scientist Susie

Simon Bloomberg

Senior reporter Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz Wood is working to find out what is causing the algae to bloom and why it has happened earlier in the Maitai this year. “We are not sure what is causing it to grow and why it is only found in some rivers. It could be something to do with the fact that the Maitai and Waimea rivers have dams which changes the flow but that's just a hypothesis.” The algae, which is black or dark brown

and has a musky smell, represents a very real danger and Trevor says the council will be diligent about monitoring sites on the district's rivers. Last year a dog died after eating the algae in the lower reaches of the Waimea River. “We looked at the Waimea last Tuesday and the levels were very low so it's not a problem yet. We have integrated the surveys with our water quality testing at swimming sites so we'll be doing it weekly and then twice weekly over Christmas and into January and February.” Sites on the Motueka, Lee, Roding, Wairoa and Takaka rivers were also clear, he says.

Truck crashes on Brightwater street

A woman was left with just minor injuries after crashing her small truck into a wooden power pole on a Brightwater street. The incident happened on Lord Rutherford Rd on Saturday morning. She was the only occupant of the vehicle. Rural fire officer Steve Foote says the injuries were “very minor” and were isolated to just one hand. However, he expects the truck would be written off due to the significant damage. Brightwater Volunteer Fire Brigade and police were first on the scene.

A study of contamination from anti-fouling paints at boat slipways and hard stands around the Tasman district shows that some sites are so badly polluted that concentrations of toxic metals are over 100 times higher than national safety guidelines, posing a serious risk to the marine environment and boaties. A report to the council last month identified a number of sites where there were unsafe levels of contaminants from anti-fouling paints that are used on boats to inhibit marine growth on the hulls. Anti-fouling paint contains a number of toxic metals including zinc and copper as well as biocides to kill marine life and these have been accumulating in the sediments at slipways and boat hard stands around the district. A preliminary study conducted this year with funding assistance from the Ministry of the Environment showed that the commercial slipways and boat hardstands at Port Motueka and Waitapu, near Takaka, were the two most heavily contaminated sites. The council’s resource scientist Paul Sheldon says that some parts of the site at Port Motueka were so badly

contaminated that copper concentrations of 76,000 parts per million, or 7.6 per cent were recorded. The national guidelines state that anything over 270 parts per million will impact on the environment. “That’s gross contamination - it’s way over the safety guidelines,” Paul says. Paul says the key concern is that the high levels of contamination could be harming the marine environment. The contaminants also potentially pose a health risk to boaties frequenting those sites. Chairman of the Environment and Planning committee Stu Bryant says he is also concerned about the contamination and the council needs to work with the boat and facility owners to try to resolve the problem. Stu says remedial work to cleanup polluted sites and preventing further pollution at slipways are the key issues although the biggest problem could be deciding who pays for it, ratepayers or users. Stu says he is pleased the council is addressing the issue. TDC is waiting for a further report next year, which will include suggested options, before acting.

‘Santa’ pulls plug on lights Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz There won’t be any Christmas lights shining from Bob Peters’ place on River Terrace this year. He’s pulled the plug after 12 years. Bob was a regular entrant in the Light Up Nelson competition, which he won in 2007, and was well known for dressing up as Santa Claus and sitting outside with his cat while people wandered through his property over the festive period. He admits it will be a quieter December and he may even get a chance to check out the other houses this year, but it was the time consuming effort of putting up 36,000 lights over six weeks that spelled an end to his hobby. “Christmas will be a lot different this year, hell yeah,” he says. “It will be a lot quieter. I just want to thank everyone who came out and let them know I’ve finished.” It was a holiday to the United States which birthed Bob’s passion for Christmas lights. “I saw all these Christmas lights and there was a sale on at Kmart so I bought a whole lot and shipped them back and that got me going. It started off with a few icicle lights and went from there.” Bob reckons he spent $7000 all up on

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz First Years Richmond said goodbye to a long serving staff member last week when Marion Brooks retired. She’s spent 25 years at the hub of the early childhood centre in a varied role as an office administrator, secretary to the Board of Trustees, and go to person for both children and adults as the years have gone by. Marion says it’s only when she looks back over her time spent at the centre that she realises how far she’s come. “In the very early days when I started work at the centre it was known as Richmond Community Childcare Centre Inc. All of the office work was done manually, even the cash book was hand written along with all of the accounts for fees.” She says she was very anxious when the first computer was purchased and she “had to learn to work the thing”. “I was completely computer illiterate and had never turned on a computer let alone worked on one. Gradually everything was computerised and it was like having a new job.” Marion says she stayed on at the centre for so long because of her passion for the children she met there. “Being involved in the lives of so many children and their parents over the

First Years Richmond staff member Marion Brooks is retiring from the Salisbury Rd centre after 25 years. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie. years has been very rewarding. Every day is different. I will really miss the children and their parents and the team.” While she has stayed at First Years for a long time, Marion says she’s kept a close eye outside the centre to see what her ex pupils have gone on to do and has enjoyed quietly watching their successes from the sidelines. “I have enjoyed reading in the paper about children who have gone on to excel at sport and academically. Children come to us for work experience from all of the local schools, some of who used to attend.”

Marion says her longevity in the role is also a credit to “a very special person”, the late Gillian Perkins, who had a major influence on her understanding of early childhood education.” For centre manager Karina Rasmussen the end of Marion’s 25 year career is bittersweet but she says her legacy will still stay on at the centre. “We have worked closely together and she will be sorely missed. She is so capable, confident, happy and cheerful with the children. Every day you could guarantee someone would be at her door holding something to be sewn or mended.”

Rutherford Day proposal for our most famous son He was the Brightwater born physicist who split the atom and became known as the father of nuclear physics. And if one local man gets his way, we’ll be honouring Ernest Rutherford with a recognised day of remembrance next year. Tony Flewellen has set August 30, 2014 – the anniversary of Ernest Rutherford’s birth – in his sights as the first ever Rutherford Day. He says his passion for science, particularly the philosophy of science combined with the recent reading of a biography of Rutherford has spurred him on to create the day of recognition. “After coming to understand what an amazing bloke he was I thought it was only right that perhaps we honoured Rutherford in the same way he chose to honour us. When he was elevated to the peerage he took the name quite proudly, Baron Rutherford of Nelson, he had a lot of choices open to him but he chose Nelson and I think it is probably time to return that compliment.” He says despite place names and memorials around Nelson, more could be done to remember Rutherford and his achievements and that’s been the motivation behind pushing a special anniversary day. “There’s place names around the place and most of us are familiar with Rutherford house and

Rutherford St, but I think there is probably a whole generation of Nelsonians now who’ve grown up not really knowing the full story behind those names.” He says while the idea is in the very early stages of planning, he’s got plenty of ideas about what the day could potentially be for Nelson. “It’s in gestation at the moment but it has the potential to be a lot of things. I would like first and foremost for it to be a day where we honour Rutherford’s memory. Sec-

ondly it is a chance for us all to focus on the sciences in our region and the way they contribute to our economy because it’s a huge part of what we are in Nelson. And it could also be a chance to honour some of the academic work that goes on.” He says he is hopeful that the community will get behind it and encourages the public to support the idea. “August 30 next year will be the inaugural Rutherford Day – I’m quite sure of it.”

Spreading the Christmas spirit

with Sinead Ogilvie Wednesday November 27 The Tasman Visual Art Group's fifth annual summer exhibition attracted a great crowd two weekends ago who ended up voting for Betty Salter to win the People's Choice award. Betty's large oil painting 'Aoraki Sunrise' was the winning piece and the relatively new group member says she was thrilled to take home the accolade. Wednesday November 27 The 41 local Special Olympics Nelson athletes who attended the National Summer Games in Dunedin two weeks ago did the region proud bringing home a range of medals across the many different events. Coordinator Lois Aitkenhead says she was thrilled that nearly everyone achieved personal bests while at the games. Despite being up against 1200 entrants from all over the country the group took home 21 gold medals, 25 silver medals, 13 bronze medals, 12 fourth placings and 21 fifth placings. Wednesday October 25 The youth group Detonate Youth have raised the funds they need to get to the Phillipines after appearing in the Waimea Weekly and are set to fly out on their volunteer mission on December 28. Their plans have changed slightly however following the devastating typhoon which passed over the village they were heading for. They expect that tens of thousands of refugees from the disaster will be at the village, so while they will still visit their sponsor child, they will also volunteer their time anywhere that is needed. If you have an end to one of our stories contact Sinead on reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Grace Church have erected a giant, lit up star on top of the Richmond Hills for Christmas. Photos: Phillip Rollo.

Grace Church members Ken Polglase, Jean Phipps, Carol Burson, Annette Nistor, Trish Gauntlett, Linda Gill, Caren McBride and Mark McBride with some of the 9500 pieces of shortbread that will be distributed around Richmond homes.

Members of the Grace Church have gone about spreading the Christmas love by making shortbread, distributing it to homes around Richmond, building a UV nativity scene and erecting a giant star above the hills of Richmond. Ken Polglase believes the “real meaning of Christmas” was being lost from the community, so as a church, they decided to “refocus” the community towards the birth of Jesus Christ. “We’ve done a number of things like the shortbread with a card attached to as many letterboxes as we can in Richmond,” he says. “The whole focus is putting the focus back on Jesus.” About 9500 pieces of shortbread had been baked over the past few weeks with 50 members of the church helping out in teams. “Initially we were going to make them star shaped but logistically it became too difficult but they’ve got a star imprinted. Groups are marking off streets and taking them around. It’s very much been a team effort with different people doing different things.” The eight meter high star was set up on Saturday night and will be up until Christmas Eve. It is visible from Richmond, and can be seen above Champion Rd. “We just want to lift the awareness in the community that it’s not just about Santa Claus and that there is a real significance.”

From accountant to author Richmond accountant Ross Stevenson has taken time out from his day job to write two children’s books which he has just published. Ross has written “a bit of poetry over the years” and when he had some spare time on his hands last year decided to write a book. The end result were two children’s fiction books with an animal theme, Herbert The Hound Dog and Freddie The Ferret which have been published by USbased print-on-demand publisher Xlibris. Ross says his first book, Herbert The Hound Dog, is about the adventures of a young hound dog who dreams about becoming a tracker. Freddie The Ferret also features Herbert as the young hound dog tries to prove himself by tracking down the cunning ferret. Both books are illustrated by Raynald Kudemas . Although Ross is a keen part-time poet he says he never thought about writing a book until last year when he was taking care of his ill wife Lynn. “My wife had a stroke and I stayed at home with her and that’s when I started writing,” Ross says. “It all happened by accident really.” When Ross finished Herbert The Hound Dog he decided to submit his work to a discerning critic and was thrilled when it came back with a rave review. “I gave the manuscript to one of my colleagues

Bennetts bow out of Waimea Intermediate Two of Waimea Intermediate's longest serving teachers Paul and Marina Bennett are retiring after spending 40 years in the education service in England and around New Zealand. Marina, who leads the school's year 8 syndicate, has been at Waimea Intermediate School for 24 years after starting teaching in Bristol and then migrating to New Zealand where she taught in Tokoroa and Karamea. Paul started his career in Birmingham in 1974 and had stints at Bristol, Otorohanga, Tokoroa, Karamea and Tapawera before joining Marina at Waimea in 1993 where he is a deputy principal. Although the couple took a long time to get to Waimea Intermediate with Paul returning to England after his first teaching venture to New Zealand and Marina taking a year's leave to pursue a career as a professional musician, Paul says they definitely ended up in the right place. “Waimea Intermediate is a fantastic school,” Paul says. “We wouldn't have lasted in teaching if we hadn't come here. “It really cares about the kids and

it's based on values and people and not on national standards. The staff are great and the kids are getting better and better – it will be sad to leave.” In contrast, Paul says the first school he taught at was “a grey concrete jungle in Birmingham that relied on teaching by intimidation”. “I started teaching on September 4, 1974 at a comprehensive school in Birmingham. The staff were very friendly but after three years I'd had enough and decided to migrate to New Zealand. “I taught at Otorohanga College for two years and that was a big culture shock. I had a form class that was all Maori and I couldn't pronounce any of their names. However those kids taught me so much about being a New Zealander including not to wear walk socks.” After returning to England and working as a primary school teacher in Bristol, Paul met Marina and they migrated back to

Paul and Marina Bennett with Marina’s year 8 class at Waimea Intermediate School this week. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. New Zealand. Marina says they secured teaching jobs in Tokoroa and were considering a move back to England when they fell in love with Nelson. “We came out to New Zealand because it was the height of the cold war and Maggie Thatcher was putting nuclear missiles all over the place. There were something like 52 first strike targets around Bristol where we were

living which was not great with a family of young kids," Marina says. “We loved teaching in Tokoroa – the kids were fantastic and the staff were great – but then we were holidaying in Nelson and just decided that was where they were going to live. We bought a house in Mahana and started applying for jobs.” After teaching at Karamea, Ma-

rina and then Paul via Tapawera, got jobs at Waimea Intermediate and shifted into a house in the Aniseed Valley. Paul and Marina have witnessed a number of changes in the education system over the years but Paul says one of the best has been the introduction at Waimea of a behaviour and wellbeing plan which includes restorative practice. He says that has taught the students to be responsible for their actions and as a result "the kids have just been getting better and better". “Under the old system of punishment all the kids learned was not to get caught next time. Now they have to face up to all the people they have affected and that teaches them to treat everyone respectfully.” Marina and Paul say they will miss the collegial staff and relationships with the students but it is the right time to retire. Paul says he has lots of things he wants to do more of including travelling, gardening, and karate while Marina wants to run a marathon in a decent time and ride her horse more.

In September Nick had a first hand, first time experience of Cape Town, South Africa with Adventure World tours and Singapore Airlines. This is what Nick says about his experience;

This year between us we’ve checked out:

Getting to Cuba isn’t entirely straight-forward, the options are limited, via South America or alternatively Canada. I flew with Lan airline via Santiago in Chile with a stop in Peru on the way.

I would definitely recommend South Africa as a holiday destination, particularly Cape Town and the surrounding areas.

• Honolulu, Hawaii staying at the Hilton Waikiki Beach hotel, flying Hawaiian Airlines. • Noumea, New Caledonia staying at Royal Tera hotel and flying Aircalin. • Cape Town and the garden route, several game reserves and Johannesburg in South Africa, flying with Singapore Airlines. • Havana, Cuba, and Machu Picchu in Peru, flying with Lan. • Adelaide and the Clare Valley, with South Australian Tourism, flying Air New Zealand. • Rarotonga flying with Air New Zealand. • Perth, Western Australia, staying at the Four Points by Sheraton and flying Air New Zealand • This month Tim and Nick are checking out the Sir Stamford Hotel in Circular Quay, Sydney and cruising back to NZ on Holland America Line's ship MS Oosterdam.

I was fortunate to do a ‘Best of Cuba’ World Journeys tour which included the capital Havana, and on to the Unesco heritage-listed city of Trinidad. The World Journeys people were amazing and at times they worked miracles (such as producing a new bus when the air conditioning broke down). Highlights included seeing the stunning and well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture and vintage American cars lovingly preserved. I got to soak up the atmosphere and see how the locals live, and the impact of Fidel Castro’s communist government since 1959. The locals still need government issued coupons to buy bread at designated stores. Pleasant surprise of the trip was the variety and quality of the artworks for sale. I wish I had bought more art to bring home!

Highlights included Table Mountain, Stellenbosch (very old and pretty) and the wine-lands area, and a visit to the Cape of Good Hope. Included in the trip was three nights spent on two different game reserves (Sambona and Shamwari) seeing the wildlife. Seeing 4 of the ‘Big 5’ animals was an incredible experience. A bit of advice if travelling to South Africa in early spring is – TAKE WARM CLOTHES!! It gets cold, really cold! Also, 3 nights is not enough! My personal highlight was getting out of the jeep to walk through the African grassland savannah to take photos up-close and personal with two cheetahs! My only regret was that we didn’t get more time to explore the towns of Knysna (a lot like Nelson) and Plettenburg.

Locals get behind Philippines The organisers of a fun day to raise funds for disaster relief in the Philippines have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity they are receiving from the Nelson-Tasman community. Helping Hands Nelson have organised the community fun day at Auckland Point School this Sunday (Dec 15) to raise funds for victims of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the Philippines earlier this year. The group has been asking people

for help and two of its members, Philippine woman Juliet Barton and her step-daughter Ariel, say the response to their request has invariably been ‘yes’. “Our budget is zero so we are really grateful for all the support we are getting,” Juliet says. “All the people we have asked to help have said yes. “All the entertainers are performing for free and everyone is donating their time. It shows Nelson may be a small town but it has a

Ubana Jones, Trudi Wilson, Paul Madsen and Papercity. There will also be food stalls, spot prizes, games, bouncy castles, a team of huskies and miniature horses. Juliet says the earthquake and typhoon devastated the Philippines and she is so happy she has had an opportunity to help out. “It has been terrible. Thankfully my parents and family over there are fine although my parents’ house was destroyed by the earthquake and then hit again the

typhoon.” Ariel says there will also be a fundraising performance from Bryce Wastney and Steve Mitchell in the Bel-Aire Tavern in Tahunanui starting at 7.30pm this Sunday. An art auction at the Tahunanui Community Centre was also planned for March with proceeds from all the fundraising events going to World Vision and Red Cross. The fun day will be at Auckland Point School from 10am to 4pm.

Some do this in town and for business it works great especially for the ones swapping shifts. Aimee May. In attempting to explain the very strange parking format at Richmond Mall, the manager rather conveniently omits to mention she has issued a blanket ‘no parking in mall parking areas’ for all staff at the mall up until Christmas, resulting in congestion in local residential streets. So these parks would like what they are - a classic blunder and a total waste of space. Incidentally, when approached regarding local streets used for default parking by mall staff, Ms de Clerq did not appear at all concerned about the inconvenience to residents. Tasman District Council were equally disinterested. D Shaw.

A story on page 6 of today’s Weekly shows the council is doing something about the crowded parking on the streets surrounding the mall and its manager clearly has no jurisdiction in the streets outside the mall. Volunteers get ‘thank you’

“Without you guys we wouldn’t be able to function”, Red Cross Nelson service coordinator Amy Wilson told the volunteers. All of the 325 Red Cross volunteers and members were invited to the Nelson Golf Club on Friday for a Christmas afternoon tea, a thank you for all their work over the year. Volunteers help out Red Cross in a variety of ways including meals on wheels, community transport, community visi-

tors service, knitting group, response team, youth programs and working in one of the three shops. “We want to show people still care,” president Max Clarke says. Red Cross has active volunteers that have been involved for 50 years, and as part of the “thank you” afternoon tea, the organisation recognised the volunteers that had reached significant service milestones, including six who had reached 20 years.

One of those was Richmond woman Maryann Anderson who has done the same Meals on Wheels run ever since moving to the region. “I’ve just continued doing it, one day a week,” Maryann says. Maryann says she has enjoyed every moment of the 20 years spent volunteering for Red Cross and while she admits she might not be able to reach another 20 years, she “hopes to do it a bit longer yet”.

216 Queen St, Richmond Ph 544 4448 The Village Café on Queen St is gearing up for Christmas and the team wants you to celebrate with them. Time sure does fly when you are having fun; it’s been a busy year for owner Amber Warren who took over the local business just under two years ago. She’s completely revamped the menu, has livened up the café with her fresh ideas, great energy and has an awesome team to round it all out. While the Village Café offers old

fashioned kiwi classics, Amber has added a great twist to the menu that now caters to any taste. Her homemade food that is prepared onsite daily has well and truly hit the mark with locals who love having a wide variety of sweet and savoury treats to choose from. When it comes to stepping out of the hustle and bustle for morning tea, lunch or afternoon tea, you can’t beat Village Café. Located on the main

be able to grab a great coffee fix. “As far as I am aware we are one of the only ones around that open at that time, so it’s really convenient for our customers to swing by on their way to work.” Alongside award winning coffee, yummy cakes, tasty scones, savouries, sandwiches and great cabinet food, locals will be able to sample the new summer menu that Amber has introduced, featuring delicious panini’s that have already proven to be incredibly popular. The specials board is also taking off and with access to fresh whitebait Amber is introducing ‘Whitebait Fritter Friday’. The special day is this Friday and she urges locals to get into the café while the season’s catch is still in stock. “We have a great source of fresh whitebait so we will be making the most of it through our new ‘Fritter Friday’. Come in this Friday and order fresh whitebait fritters, made on site.” Another new feature on the menu is the Madbeat Milkshake, which Amber specifically designed for the local dancers who use the upstairs studio each week. She says she often gets the dancers coming in prior to their les-

sons and wanted to supply them with something special. “At just $2 a milkshake it’s a nice treat before or after a lesson. There’s also plenty of space for mum or dad to sit down and relax and enjoy a coffee or tea while they wait for the kids to finish dancing.” With the end of the year looming, it’s also the perfect time to get your Christmas party and BBQ catering requests in to the Village Café. Amber has become somewhat famous for her delicious range of salads which make catering to a crowd a lot easier. Whether it is morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea or a group get together she is more than happy to supply salads to any number of people. “We are really expanding the catering side of things and welcome all enquiries, there is no function too small or too large, we will do it all.” With a new summer menu, function catering and ‘Whitebait Fritter Friday’ to look forward to, visit the Village Café and taste for yourself why this local business is taking off. Amber and the friendly team welcome enquiries for Christmas parties or BBQ’s and are happy to take orders in advance.

WEDNESDAY 11 December 2013

Just a thought... We are now in the final month of the year, and you know what that means – Christmas. We grow up with the expectation that Christmas is about joy, family, giving, summer, a break from school or work, and if you grew up going to a church, the birth of Jesus. However, Christmas time can often be a month of stress, worry and even anxiety. We may have family coming to visit, which can sometimes be more stressful than enjoyable. Or we may be travelling to see family, and the business of making travel plans can often but stressful as well. If you work, there is often a high expectation put on you over the holidays to work longer and harder due to the holiday rush and business. Christmas time can also mean a break from work, which only means more stress because you need to wrap up projects before the end of the year so you put in long and hard hours before you take time off for the holidays. If you’re a student you might be stressing about your end of the year exams and papers. If you’re a parent that usually sends their kids to school every day, you now have kids around you 24/7 which can leave you feeling weary and anxious. Maybe you are looking at your bank account and you’re worried about how you’re going to make it this year to meet the expectations of Christmas presents. Maybe you recently lost a loved one and you’re anxious because it’s a reminder of that person not being around anymore. I’m not trying to take the joy out of Christmas – on the contrary. We sometimes are so desperate to enjoy life but fear and anxiety are the thieves that creep in and rob us of our joy. Christmas is only an example of this and I’m sure there are plenty of things in your life that cause you to be fearful and worry: the future; relationships; work; family; money – we could go on and on. If you are human you probably struggle with some sort of fear and anxiety, but there is hope. Do you know how many times the phrase “do not be afraid” comes up in the bible? 365 times. That’s one for every day. And do you know why we do not need to worry or be afraid? One of the 365 phrases says it well: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10). We don’t need to worry because Jesus is alive today and he is with us. Though we celebrate his birth during the Christmas holidays, we also celebrate his death during Easter because we know that he rose from the dead, and we can have access to him every day. All you need to do is give over your fear and anxiety to him and stop trying to do it all by yourself, because the truth is, you can’t! Have a Merry Christmas, Nick Ippolito, Hope Community Church.

RICHMOND COMMUNITY PATROL ground are needed.” The community has seen a definite drop in the levels of crime occurring in the wee hours of the weekend, a result of the efforts of the community patrol and the great support the community show for each other in deterring night life crime. Working with the NZ Police, schools, families and local businesses to patrol known trouble spots, patrollers are well trained and the safety of volunteers is of the highest priority. Community constable Glyn Cunningham says he can’t speak highly enough of the patrol group and he’s in no doubt that they have played a huge role in preventing crime in the area. “The patrol is lead by a very enthusiastic leader who is very proactive. We find them extremely valuable to the community. They definitely assist police in our role. I know they have prevented crime, they patrol areas such as schools, churches and parks and provide a visible deterrent to people hanging around there. They’ve also assisted us in quite a few incidents and been able to provide dialogue from the scene while police are still en route.” Glyn recommends that anyone who has considered joining the patrol before or would

If you want to help keep Richmond a safer place in which to live, while doing something worthwhile for the community, then joining the patrol is a good option to look at. A group of keen volunteers are the extra eyes and ears of the Richmond Police, keeping our community safe from harm and their presence on our streets has made all the difference. It has now been more than five years since the dedicated group began patrolling the streets of Richmond and they have never been more appreciated. The patrol’s visible presence around town has helped to reduce the levels of disorder evident from earlier years, such as graffiti, damaged properties and generally unappreciated nighttime behavior which inspired the group to inception. The volunteers now spend their Friday and Saturday nights out on patrol, sharing a close relationship with our police, council and community to keep the streets clear of unwanted crime. Mike Gill, coordinator for the Richmond Community Patrol group says that in the last year, his volunteers have successfully dealt with insecure buildings, assaults, willful damage and similar scenarios while providing essential support to the community. “We have also assisted the police on the ground by providing cordons and at various local community events where extra feet on the

• It has been one of those days. It began this morning when I dropped the toast, butter [and honey] side down. Banking clouds made the sky look as if it was about to drop buckets. But it didn’t, so I had to water plants and deal with a cold spiteful wind at the same time. Then the sun came out, so off came the sweat shirt. But 10 minutes later, the cold set in again. Dropped something, retrieved it, stood up and banged my head. I could go on, but the day ended with a delicious blueberry muffin thanks to Peter, and all is well again. If our chat is a little cranky on my part, all of the above, are the reasons why! • So. The summer veges are in the garden, a-growing [and a-blowing] by today’s efforts. It’s time for a bit of fun. • Plants, just like people, have personalities. We are all aware of “the life of the party” type of person. They can be fun, but we are all aware of some who are not! And come to think of it, there is always some self-appointed leader on a bus tour. The one who is always first on the bus, thus ensuring the best seat. This self-same “leader” is also first off as well, and is a confirmed first up at the food bar. And so it goes on. There are the loud mouths, the shy violets, the hard workers, the slackers, The supportive types, and the gunnas. They are always “gunna” do this and that. But probably the most reliable of the collection, are the “supporters” because they can be relied upon to lend a hand and give a bit of support when needed. And of course there are the “flamboyants” as well as those who like to do their own thing, regardless. • A shrub called kalmia latifolia likes to be different. It begins life with a pink bud that resembles a star made with a cake icing tube. No wonder it is often called the icing sugar shrub. It is a fascinating thing, liking conditions that rhodos and camellias prefer. • There is another shrub called brunfelsia, also going by the name Yesterday Today and Tomorrow. Three shades of mauve bless the shrub at the same time. I forget how it goes, but as the flowers develop, they change their

colours giving a fascinating effect. A woman wanted to give a gift to a friend who was about to deal with a serious operation. She chose the brunfelsia because of the special country name. • A plant that does its own thing, regardless of its cousins, is hydrangea ayesha. It produces flowers that resemble the flowers of the fragrant lilac. Alas, ayesha doesn’t have the fragrance, but she is indeed different. Pink or blue blooms depending on soil. Remember, lime for pink flowers, acid for blue. The oak leaf hydrangeas like to be a bit different too, with foliage resembling oak leaves. They colour up nicely in autumn too. • Conical shaped flowers add to the difference. The Shrimp plant is really different. Can’t remember its botanical name. Too hard to spell as well. But the country name says it all. The flowers really do look like hanging shrimps, colour and all. Can be grown as an indoor plant as well, and I must add it flowers for ages. • Thinking about the pushy person on the bus. There are perennials and shrubs that behave like their human counterpart too, so be sure to seek advice when buying. • Mention should be made regarding the Supporters. In the plant world these are often called companion plants. They quietly offset the loud noisy plants in the garden and make a valuable contribution to the general effect. Never underestimate their value. • Think about a play or musical performance. Yes, the performers are great. The costumes likewise. The props are magnificent. But the audience has eyes only for the performers. At the end of the performance they come forward and bow in acknowledgement of your appreciation. • But what would have happened if the stage crew, the make-up, and costume departments and the tea lady had gone on strike, what would you have then? Nothing! Catch you later, Jill.

Swimmers slash personal bests Ninety-four swimmers from across the region competed at the Christmas Ribbon swim meet on Saturday hosted by the Tasman Swim Club at Nayland Pool. The Tasman Swim Club, formerly the Nelson Swimming Club, has recently changed its name to more accurately reflect that the majority of its swimmers are based and train at the ASB Aquatic Centre in Richmond, and to also remove the confusion that exists with another similarly named club the Nelson South Swimming Club. There were four standout swimmers at the meet who all swim for the host club. David Price, 14, led the way by recording an impressive seven personal best times from all of his races, including slashing a huge 90 seconds off his 1500m freestyle and almost 15 seconds off his 200m breaststroke time. Cassandra Hagan, 12, not to be outdone also recorded seven PBs from seven races and she took an impressive 32 seconds off her 800m freestyle time, and added icing to the cake by making NZ Junior Champs qualifying times in the 100m and 200m freestyle. Kaleb Johnston, 12 recorded four PBs from four races including the biggest PB of the meet as he smashed 93 seconds off his 1500m freestyle time while Xavier Anderson, also 12, rounded off the four standout swimmers also recording four PBs, taking a massive 60 seconds off his 400m freestyle time. The Nelson South Swimming Club entered 25 swimmers and the standout swimmer

David Price, 14, was one of the standouts at the Christmas Ribbon swim meet on Saturday, slashing seven personal bests. Photo: Phillip Rollo. was Joe Banner, 13, who claimed four PBs from five races. Jet Persico, 12, also from Nelson South swam well to record three PBs and knocked four seconds off his 200m breaststroke

time. Gabrielle Hannen, 14, was another Nelson South swimmer to impress as she slashed 19 seconds off her 400m freestyle best time. One of Nelson South’s top nationally

ranked swimmers, Eddie Neill, 16, broke the Nelson-Marlborough regional record for 16 year old boys in the 400m Medley taking the record off his older brother Fraser. Some of Nelson South’s swimmers found it tough going as they had just swum in their club championships the night before. Waimea Swimming Club entered 17 swimmers and the swimmers to impress were Oliver Stark, 11, and Ruby-Lou Stuart, 11, who both swam very well to record four PBs each from six races. Oliver took six seconds off his 200m freestyle best time while Ruby-Lou dropped her 200m Medley best time by seven seconds. Competitors from Motueka and Golden Bay were also in attendance. Overall there were eight Nelson–Marlborough regional age group records broken at the meet, and the host Tasman Swim Club scored seven of those records. Sam Mckenzie broke three of the 14 year old records for boys in the 50m, 200m and the 1500m freestyle which has stood since 1993, Talya Harwood broke the 14 year old girls record in the 800m freestyle which has stood since 1994, Madisen Stanley broke the 17 year old girls record in the 800m freestyle, Kaine Ransby broke the 17 year old boys record in the 1500m freestyle while new club member Thomas Heaton, who has recently transferred up from Otago, broke the 15 year old boys record in the 1500m freestyle which has stood since 1994.

Brightwater mountainbiker Scott Barr’s dream of becoming a professional rider became a little more real last week when he was named in the newly formed national junior development squad. Scott is one of eight cross-country riders selected for the Torpedo7-sponsored squad which will be training for under-19 races at the national mountainbike champs in Rotorua in February and the Oceania champs at Mt Hutt in March. The 16-year-old Waimea College student will also race in the New Zealand Cup which will be held in Canterbury on January18-19 and Nelson on February 2-3. “I really want to race full-time so this is a big step along that pathway for me,” Scott says. “It’s going to be a big advantage good training with the squad for nationals and then the Oceanias.” It is the first time that Scott has been named in a national team although his selection is no surprise after recording a series of impressive results at national level. He first came to the selectors attention when he won the under-15 national secondary school’s title in 2011 and followed that up by winning the under-17 nationals last year and the under-17 New Zealand Cup this year. Scott is determined to continue producing top results and has been training hard on the trails around the region. “I mostly ride on the Codgers tracks or around the Richmond Hills and sometimes I get out to Kaiteriteri. I also do a bit of road riding which

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. is good training and it’s also nice to get out with other riders.” Scott says he also enjoys getting out with his father Darrin, who is also a keen rider, once or twice a week. “It’s fun riding with dad although he has trouble keeping up now.”

Golden boy claims three national titles

Tapawera Area School jumper Chris Brake claimed three national titles at the New Zealand Secondary School Athletics Championship in Hamilton. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Personal bests, gold medals, national titles, Tasman records. You name it, Chris Brake has got it. The 18 year old Tapawera Area School student became just the second person in Nelson Athletics history to hold eight medals from the New Zealand Secondary School Athletics Championship, adding three golds to his collection on the weekend. The Year 13 student went to Hamilton with the goal of winning one gold medal in his final high school competition and at the very least, a personal best in either high jump, long jump or triple jump. He arrived back with much more than that, and labelled his performance at Porrit Stadium as “perfect”, equalling the Tasman senior re-

cord with his 2.03m first placing in high jump, and smashing his own personal best in triple jump to win with 14.18m - a staggering 66cm ahead of the silver medalist, and 18cm further than the current Athletics Nelson record. His long jump, of 6.88m, another personal best, capped off a weekend Athletics Nelson head coach Greg Lautenslager described as “one of the most dominating performances by a Nelson-area schoolboy.” Chris says “it’s amazing”. “Cracking the two metre mark [in high jump] just before nationals was

a big thing for me because there was about five kids that had cleared the two metre mark.” Chris was the only person to clear 2.03m however and he says it was a “real surprise”. Out of the three medals, Chris says the high jump was “definitely” more significant. “Mainly because I’ve finally got over the two metre mark and it was such an intense competition. There were so many good jumpers that I thought there was a real chance I wouldn’t even get a medal.” Chris will now turn his attention to the New Zealand Track and Field Championship in Wellington in March. He was undecided whether he would enter all three jumps at the event.

Gridiron season a real ripper The cry of “hut, hut, hut!” doesn’t echo around Nelson very often, but for the past ten weeks it could be heard at Saxton Field as one of its paddocks had been turned into an American football pitch. The Junior Ripper Gridiron League concluded on Friday night and head coach Mark Rais, who ran around in a full black and white referee uniform during the season, says it was another big success. The aim was to get children playing a new sport at a time that would generally be their offseason. But having been told that some of them had been researching their favourite players and had been glued to the TV screens when the NFL was on, Mark believes there is some interest here in Ameri-

can’s biggest sport. “The most important thing was to make sure they enjoyed it, you don’t want it to be a tedious sport,” he says. “For people that never met, they’re now friends and that meant a lot.” The age of players varied between nine and 16 years, with competitors of both genders. Each player was put into one of the two evenly matched teams, the Nelson Knights or the Tasman Hornets, and given a position for the season. “A lot of them came from different backgrounds; track and field, rugby, some came from soccer, but to have that mix brought a different set of skills.” The next season will begin in September with registrations happening in August.

Makos quintet headline sevens squad There is plenty of speed and strike power in the Tasman Makos sevens squad which was named last week, and the team’s manager believes they are a real chance to reach the quarter finals of the Bayleys National Sevens for the first time. The 20-man training squad features fulltime Tasman Makos Tevita Koloamatangi, Bryce Heem, Billy Guyton, Mitchell Scott and Robbie Malneek, while a mixture

of top club performers and youngsters complement what is probably the strongest squad Tasman has sent to the national championship. Manager Mike Kerrisk says, providing Tevita and Billy are released from their Super Rugby squads, the team is more mature than they’ve had in the past. “There are some really good leaders this time round and we’ve got genuine pace and a good un-

derstanding of the game,” he says. He singled out Mitchell and James Lash as two players that will be key to Tasman’s success, while Bryce, who is part of the All Blacks Sevens squad, will also be an added boost. The full training squad is: Daniel Baxter, Te Puoho Stephens, Sione Holani, Dan Hytongue, Tevita Koloamatangi, Bryce Heem, Daniel Van Waas, Willie Umu,

James Lash, Mitchell Scott, Ryan Setefano, Billy Guyton, Nanai Naturanga, David Havili, Robbie Malneek, Latham Jones, Kerehama Barrett, Hana Corbett-Burrows, Pelefoti Siaki and Eliot Smith. Kaide Whiting was still under an injury cloud and therefore was not named in the 20-man squad, while Wanderers duo Fletcher Matthews and Trael Joass have been ruled out.

Volleyballers fight for King and Queen Nathan Irvine and Alice Zeimann are King and Queen of the Pines, taking out the unique event at Tahunanui Beach on Saturday. Beach volleyball is generally played in pairs, and while the King and Queen of the Pines was also, there was just one winner in each grade. Competitors entered as individuals and had different partners through its duration. Alice, who was partnered with Nicky Pio in the final, beat Holly Mace 2-1. Holly was partnered with Eloise van Velthooven. Over in the men’s draw, Jesse Kempf came up against Nathan, but couldn’t get the better of him, with Nathan winning out 2-1. Jesse was partnered with Amos Stephens and Nathan had Teryn Proracki on his team for the final. Overall there were 20 competitors with 15 in the men’s draw.
