Iconic Trolley Derby loses its momentum Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The Nelson regions iconic Trolley Derby was headed for Richmond in 2020, but this week organisers
announced that they’ve had to put the brakes on. The event, which has been running on and off since the 1950s, had found a new home on Richmond’s Queen Street, after being held on Collingwood Street in Nelson since 2002.
The event stalled in 2018, unable to get enough sponsorship from local businesses. The Nelson Trolley Club, who organised the event, hoped that moving the event from Nelson to Richmond might revitalise it and give it some new life, but
this week they’ve announced that they’re having to cancel the event, due to lack of interest. Trolley Club President Tim Bayley said that not enough people registered their interest to make the event viable, with only 17 entries submitted over the last 3
months. 10 of those were from members of the Trolley club. Tim says that in previous years there would be up to 90 trolley’s registered, and that they need at least 40 registrations to run the

Weather gods smile on Toy Run Matt McCrorie The weather was with the Nelson branch of the Ulysses Motorcycle Club this Saturday, with the Toy Run managing to go ahead despite the less than favourable conditions. The group motorcycle ride is organised each year as a way to raise funds and donations for The Salvation Army, who collect new toys and games from bikers and the public in aid of families in need. This year was the 34th year that the event was run, and it went off without a hitch. Although the forecast wasn’t spectacular, riders stood their ground and met at Founders Park in Nelson mid-morning on Saturday, determined to make it to the Richmond showgrounds, rain or shine.

Trolley Derby stalls from PAGE 1 event. Tim admits that taking a break last year may have helped with the derby’s demise. “I think the problem is that kids grow up. If you don’t have it going every year, it falls off and there is no one to carry it on – trolleys don’t get passed on from kid to kid.” Sponsorship was also an issue. Sprig and Fern were signed on as the naming rights sponsor, but Tim says that the group was still on their way to having enough funding to cover the event. “Just organising the event these days is a huge task. You’re talking a $25,000 day. You can’t really do that for just 17 people.” Tim first got involved with
the Trolley Derby in 2003 and formed the Nelson Trolley Club in 2010, which took over organising the event. After 16 years, Tim says that maybe it’s just had its time. “2017 was the last year that we ran it. It seems to have died a natural death.” However Tim doesn’t think the planned move to Richmond was a factor. “Queen St would have been a really great spot for it, so I don’t think that was the reason.” While the group hasn’t ruled out trying again in the future, they’re setting their sights on smaller goals in the short term, looking at a few private events for those still interested. “Who knows? As they say, it’s all downhill from here.”

Long-time committee member Derek O’Beirne said that this year they were lucky with the weather. “The weather gods smiled on us – it was overcast but we had 105 bikes that turned up – we were pleasantly surprised.” Derek says that while in the past they’ve started in Richmond and ended up in Nelson, it made more sense to ride the other way this year, after several issues with organising the logistics of the run in the last few years. “Going from Nelson
to Richmond made it easier for several reasons, especially getting through several roundabouts with such a big group. We used to have a police escort which made it easier.” Derek says that there was a lot of excitement this year. “It’s a great thing to be able to do. To provide gifts for children that otherwise might not get anything at all.” Local businesses also sponsored two raffles. Hope school makes contact with astronaut
Matt McCrorie Hope school pupils were over the moon on Monday this week, after they had the chance to talk to a real-life astronaut over Skype. The room 3 students at Hope School were lucky enough to win a nationwide competition run by the New Zealand Space Agency. The students, who won the competition with their poem, spoke to Nicole Stott, an engineer and a retired NASA astronaut.
Hope School Principal Freya Hogarth says that the school was absolutely ‘buzzing.’ “It was so exciting. The kids as well as the parents were excited. It’s given the whole school a real buzz.” Judah Frasier said he loved finding out how the special spacesuits got made. Nicole told the students about how they sleep in space, and how they had to Velcro their sleeping bags to the side of the wall to keep them from moving in the night.

Freya says it was an amazing opportunity for the students. “The students loved it, and the community has been so interested. It was a pretty cool thing.” While Room 3 pupils only got to talk to Nicole for a short time, it seems the conversation made a big impact. When asked if anyone wanted to be an astronaut now, there was not a single hand down. “We’re going to take our classroom to space,” said Solitaire Mclean, confidently.

Funding boost for local schools Last week the Government announced a huge funding boost for schools across the country – nearly $400 million. And schools across the region are still taking in the news, and what it means. Matt McCrorie talks to several local school principals to get their point of view.
Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Schools throughout the Tasman region will be receiving part of the Governments new funding for Capital Projects. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced at Labour’s conference in Whanganui a $400,000 funding boost to upgrade school buildings and facilities throughout the country. All schools across the country will receive between $50,000 - $400,000 depending on the size of their roll, and schools in the Tasman region will be better off for it. Waimea College and Waimea Intermediate will both receive the full $400,000 investment, because of their larger rolls. For example, Henley School, with a roll of 518, will receive $358,974, Hope school, with 72 students, will receive $50,000, while Wakefield School, with 275 students, will receive $190,575 in funding.
Hope School Principal Freya Hogarth says the Government’s recently announced funding boost for schools will make a ‘huge difference.’ Photo: Matt McCrorie. The money is earmarked for property projects, which can be spent on upgrading classrooms, replacing roofing and guttering, installing energyefficient heating and lighting, and resurfacing outdoor courts. The funding package, the largest spend on school infrastructure in 25 years, works out to be roughly $700
per student and will affect nearly 2000 schools across the country. “Nearly every school and community in New Zealand will benefit from this windfall investment. I’m proud that students and teachers will be the first to benefit from our infrastructure upgrade,” Jacinda said. The Prime Minister said the
spending package was a “real shot in the arm” for schools across the country. Waimea College Principal Scott Haines says that the new funding has come as a welcome surprise. “There are a myriad of projects, both property maintenance and refurbishment, that these funds could be applied to. The management team and Board of Trustees will consider, in due course, the most appropriate projects to utilise this resource.” Freya Hogarth, Principal of Hope School, said that the additional funding will make a big difference. “For a small school like ours, this sort of money goes a long way and can make a big difference.” Freya says that the school had to cut corners and alter its vision with its last building project because of a lack of resources. Schools need to spend the money within the next two years, and special schools will receive $200,000 regardless of their roll size.

The club started the visits two years ago and they are very popular, in fact if they don’t confirm their visit by September the residents are ringing to ask if they are still coming. “We are a group of like-minded classic, custom and hot rod car enthusiasts who thought it was a great feel-good idea to share our passion for cars with retired residents who are very supportive of our Christmas Cruise.” says Kim Quint, a club member and part of the social committee. The rain on Sunday didn’t put a dampener on the enjoyment with a small crowd waiting 15 minutes prior to the cars arrival. Some of the cars were decorated for Christmas and there were even a couple of elves amongst the drivers. After parking the cars the club spent 15 minutes chatting to the residents and answering questions before departing with waves and calls of ‘see you next year’. Photo: Susan Johnson.

Getting through it together Matt McCrorie Heather Vass wishes she didn’t have to go through her cancer ordeal on her own. But now, three years after she was first diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma – a rare type of blood cancer, she is helping others in the Nelson Tasman region with similar conditions get through it together. Heather was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a form of blood cancer in white blood cells that normally produce antibodies, early in 2016. After being diagnosed in Christchurch Hospital, she went through 16 weeks of chemo, followed by a stem cell treatment, and then another 20 weeks of chemo after that.
“I felt isolated.” While she was supported by friends and family, Heather says that what she needed was to speak to someone going through the same thing. “In Christchurch, you are in isolation. The chemo ward is the only place that you have any sort of way to meet other people going through the same thing. I was virtually going out of my tree.” It wasn’t until Heather was in partial remission that she discovered a Blood Cancer support group, started in 2017 by Graham Sturgess and Lloyd Kenny and found the support that she had been looking for. “I felt isolated for the first 18 months, and I wanted to be able to connect with others
experiencing the same as me.” Finding a support group made all the difference for Heather. “This group gets it,” Heather says. The group has grown from its inception in 2017, from just a few members to nearly 30 members, including some carers. “You can talk about things that are difficult to talk to anyone else about.” While support from friends and family is invaluable, Heather says that it’s a different type of support to be able to talk with people who are in the same boat. “People going through the same thing understand it in a different way to anyone else.” Now, after running the group
for the last 10 months, Heather says that the benefits are huge. “There is this knowledge that we all know that we are understood, even when it isn’t spoken.” While most people in the group can’t be cured, Heather says she doesn’t regard herself as terminal. “We are not curable – but we go on living. We’re not done yet, we still have a lot to give.” Heather says that running the group has taught her to live in the now. “Instead of waiting for our condition to come back, we live for the now. You live for what you have.” Anyone with a similar condition can contact Heather on 027 4444 708 for more details.
Extra $80 for Network Tasman customers
Last week the Network Tasman Trust announced that residents from Golden Bay, Murchison, and the Tasman region will receive $80 off their power bill, for December/January. This comes from the Network Tasman Trust, who represents the end users of the Network Tasman network. The trust owns Network Tasman Ltd on their behalf. “We are delighted to be able to make this payment to consumers again this year through their energy bill”, said Gwenny Davis, Chair of the Trust. Gwenny says that between the Company itself, which gives regular discounts to its consumers, and the Trust, a total of around $230 million has been paid out to the consumers since the Company was formed in 1993. “This is money retained in the region, for the people of greater Nelson.” said Gwenny Davis.

In response to a petition from residents, the New Zealand Transport Agency is looking at reviewing speed limits on State Highway 6 between Hope and Wakefield. NZTA is seeking public consultation before considering any changes. With more development planned, the stretch of road between Hope and Wakefield is getting increasingly busier. Locals have expressed their concern, and said that speeds feel too high and make turning off and onto the highway difficult. Two drop in sessions are being held on: Wednesday 18 December 11am–1pm at the Brightwater Four Square, 58 Ellis Street, and another from 1.30pm–3.30pm Wakefield School Hall, Edward Street, Wakefield.
Fresh Asian Cuisine
The friendly staff at Chai Yo, from left, Wanlapa, Amiee, Sunita, Sangha, Saat, Rose, are dedicated to creating a great atmosphere to enjoy the range of Asian cuisine.
Chai Yo celebrates 10 years – says ‘thanks!’ The owners of the popular Thai restaurant Chai Yo are celebrating 10 years in business and want to say a big ‘THANKYOU’ to their loyal customers. “We have really appreciated the support of locals who come here on a regular basis,” says Bu-nga Krartaitong who owns Chai Yo with her husband Nuvattut Rodsienglum. “Our customers enjoy the relaxed, friendly atmosphere and our great selection of dishes such as ‘Thai Spicy Fried Rice, ‘Drunken Noodles’ and ‘Angry Duck,’
with favourites like ‘Pad Thai’ and our very own signature dish – ‘Crunchy Chicken with Creamy Red Coconut Sauce.’” The couple’s partnership has been a recipe for success. “My husband is experienced in cooking Asian-fusion cuisine and I have a strong business background. Nuttavut’s mother was a fantastic cook and she is an inspiration for everything we do. Our recipes use the knowledge we have from cooking with our families in Thailand and taking the best local ingredients and
adapting to the local palate.” Bu-nga says it’s a good time for them to expand and introduce a Chinese-oriented menu as well. “We are planning to have dishes such as Orange Chicken and Orange Beef, Duck with Palo Sauce and Hokkein Noodles.” Chai Yo is perfect for groups, corporate functions and endof-year work dinners and is also ideal for couples, families or friends looking for somewhere to dine over the holidays. Local business’ get kids in the water Matt McCrorie Watching Jade and Wyatt Maxsted glide through the water at the Richmond Aquatic Centre, it’s hard to imagine that these two were anything but confident swimmers. However, that wasn’t the case in June this year. Jade and Wyatt are both a part of the SwimMagic ‘Learn to Swim’ programme, a new initiative where several local businesses’ sponsor local kids to learn to swim. Earlier this year, SwimMagic, at the Richmond Aquatic Centre, partnered with NBS Bank and Raeward Fresh, to deliver the
SwimMagic Learn to Swim programme to 80 local school kids. The programme was dreamt up after SwimMagic staff saw that not everybody in the community could afford swim lessons. The team approached local business to sponsor kids that wouldn’t usually have the opportunity to receive lessons. Jessica Riordan, Jade and Wyatt’s Mum, says the funded lessons have been a ‘huge blessing.’ “They both didn’t know how to swim well,” Jessica says. “If we didn’t get the sponsored lessons, they wouldn’t have been able to learn to swim, just because of the cost for a one-income family.”
Jade and Wyatt Maxsted, who are benefitting from SwimMagic sponsored lessons thanks to NBS and Raeward Fresh. Photo: Matt McCrorie. After 20 weeks, of lessons Jessica is amazed at their progress.
“It’s amazing. They can independently swim now.”
Over just two terms, the programme has already delivered 3,400 free lessons to nearly 170 kids in the community. Crystal Gaiger, from the Aquatic Centre, says that so far the programme has been a huge success. “We’ve seen so many examples of kids like Jade and Wyatt that come through these lessons – they can’t swim, and they need these funded lessons.” Following a huge success from the first two terms of the project, NBS has signed on for another three years. “It’s something that we really want to push next year, to get more kids in the water that otherwise wouldn’t have the chance.”
Questions asked around proposed cannabis restrictions Matt McCrorie New Zealanders will have their chance to have a say on the legalisation of cannabis in a ‘yes or no’ vote at next year’s general election. Last week the Government published its draft bill, laying out the rules around purchase, use, and growth of cannabis. The legislation, announced by Justice Minister Andrew Little last week,
could see people grow up to two plants each, and posses up to 14 grams of cannabis. If the Cannabis Bill is passed, it would allow cannabis to be consumed and purchased for recreational use for people over the age of 20. The legislation would also ban all marketing and advertising of cannabis products, and consumption would be limited to private homes and specifically li-
censed premises. Online sales would be illegal under the legislation. While a person over the age of 20 would be able to grow two cannabis plants on their property, there would be a cap at four plants per household to avoid commercial growing operations. Marty Price, the Co-ordinator for Neighbourhood Support Waimea, said that he thinks having restrictions in place is key.
“This is a first for New Zealand, and it’s kind of diving into the unknown a bit.” “I definitely feel you have to have guidelines, restrictions & regulations in place. I’m undecided on whether I would be happy with it [current restrictions.] I think 14 grams seems like a lot for just one person.” Marty says that there needs to be questions asked about how the proposed restrictions might af-
fect people doing day to day activities. “Driving a vehicle is a big concern for me. How will that be managed? I think these things need to be looked at carefully.” He also thinks a pilot programme couldn’t hurt. “If it is allowed to be legal then maybe there is a few months/ years pilot program put in place so if it’s too much to be kept legal it can be reversed.”

Going to hospital can be a scary experience for our youngest patients, so a group of local children have helped to make it a bit less daunting. Auckland Point School students have created a range of artworks for the emergency department (ED) at Nelson Hospital. Anne Geange, a Registered Nurse in ED responsible for the paediatric portfolio, says she thought of the idea to invite local schools to help refurbish the paediatric room. She asked children
to decorate some sheets of plywood, supplied by Mitre 10, with some paint that was donated by Resene. The brief was for different themes which could be mounted on the walls and be changed around seasonally, so that children could look at them while lying on the bed undergoing procedures. Cheryl Betman (also known as Whaea Betti), an art teacher at Auckland Point School, took up Anne’s invitation and asked her students to paint some of their favourite things. The resulting three panels depict themes

Anne says she hopes the artwork will help make a visit to ED more positive than negative and demystify their ED experience. “The paintings can be used as a distraction in the paediatric room by asking children to look for certain objects in the panels, similar to a ‘Where’s Wally’ book.” Cheryl says it took around 10 weeks to create the panels, and for their efforts the school was gifted a Santa sack full of Christmas treats.

Getting back on track with the Nelson Ark Susan Johnson 13-year-old Bailey Kerr admits that 8 weeks ago, her life was starting to go off track. “I was getting into heaps of trouble.” It was one of her teachers that referred her to the Nelson Ark programme after noticing the trouble she was getting into at school. The Nelson Ark, an organisation that combines counselling with animals, runs APART, an 8-week character education and dog training programme. The programme provides young people with op-
portunities to develop compassion, empathy, respect and responsibility by working with a rescue dog. “The program enables students to better engage with other members of the community,” says Alli Mitchell, co-founder. For Bailey, the programme has made a world of difference. “It’s made me a better person. I care more for others, and I see the world in a more positive way.” “My life is back on track.” For information on the programme, you can phone 03 542 3866, or visit www.thenelsonark. co.nz

Asset Protection A key role of a property manager is to protect your asset. Whether it is your family home or an investment property, a professional property manager should be able to demonstrate that they have the capacity and time to identify and address small problems and prevent these becoming bigger issues. Also, check out the number of properties your manager is looking after. They should have a manageable level of properties to ensure a high quality of service and so that problems are picked up early.

Seasons greetings from the combined churches of Richmond and Waimea
President Adrienne Chilton presents a cheque for $3220 to Hudson Dodd from Tasman Hospice. From left: Audrey Kitto, Adrienne Chilton, Hudson Dodd, Caryll Booker and Lynda Pike: Photo: Susan Johnson.
Fashion parade raises money for Tasman Hospice Susan Johnson Members from local Lioness Haven Clubs collaborated recently to hold a fashion parade at Club Waimea, with raffles and entertainment. They were raising money for the Tasman Hospice and it was the President of the Nelson branch, Adrienne Chilton, who came up with the idea after a trip abroad. She had visited a Lioness Club in Spain where a fashion parade had been held to raise funds for the club. There wasn’t enough members in a single Lioness Club
to manage the event alone which is why the three districts combined their efforts. It took eight months of planning, preparation and support from Tasman Hospice, Yvonne and Chris Bowater, Mitre 10 and other local businesses and individuals. The clothes and accessories came from the Richmond Hospice store and the models were volunteers. “Despite the huge costs of staging the fashion show at the Waimea Club we were determined to make the event a success so that the public went away with
memories of a great evening,” says Margaret Ching, second Vice-President in charge of publicity. The Nelson House of Travel, Lemon-Tree Lane, and Richmond Mall customer service desks helped to sell tickets. “When we contacted local businesses and the Lions Club, they were all incredibly supportive which has enabled us to make a substantial donation to the hospice. It was a very exciting and fun project which we will do again next year,” says Margaret. “Our club would
like to thank everyone for the support we received.” The cheque was presented to Hudson Dodd, Fundraising and Marketing Manager for Nelson/Tasman Hospice on Monday the 9th in the foyer of the hospice. “Thank you for supporting the hospice, we know you have lots of cause you could have chosen and it’s nice that you picked us,” says Hudson. “The hospice is not ours it’s the communitys, the money to build it all came from public donations.” To support the hospice visit www.nelsonhospice.org.nz

Proposed speed limit change for Tasman – 4.12.19 Julia Twort – Facebook: I dont believe I saw anything about the TDC asking for opinions on the speed limits. But I do agree with tailoring the speeds on certain roads rather than a blanket reduce. Some narrow country roads are too dangerous to travel at 100. Carol Stewart – Facebook: I got quite a surprise when reading today’s Waimea Weekly to see the young man Jesse Whitehead on
the jiggerboard at the A&P show. It brought back memories of seeing my father also a Whitehead (Stanley Whitehead) doing the same actions at Trafalgar Park in 1952 when he was age 45. My father was to become the member of Parliament for Nelson five years after in 1957 and he was MP for Nelson until his death in 1976. He was also the Speaker of the House for his last three years. It was your spelling error of the name Jesse which I first saw when reading the story which caught my eye as well because my father’s mother’s name was Jessie Whitehead!
On Friday the 6th, Brightwater held its annual carols in Centennial Park. Sponsored by the Wanderers Sports Club, it was an opportunity for them to thank their supporters for the past year and provide a bit of festive fun for the locals. This is one of two bouncy toys keeping kids like Tane McKenna and his brother Liahn happy while the sausages cooked. ‘Kelvin’ provided the music and if you hadn’t brought your own picnic there was plenty on offer, along with a lolly scramble. Nelson Matters
Nelson is living up to the true meaning of Christmas this week with the launch of the “Housing First” programme to assist those sleeping rough and homeless. The initiative is being led by the Salvation Army with Te Piki Oranga, the Male Room and the Gateway Housing Trust with support from Government. We have always had the odd rough diamond sleeping rough. I have dealt with dozens of cases over the years. Those sleeping rough are predominantly men in their older years with significant alcohol, drug or mental health problems. Most are isolated from their own families and on welfare benefits.
Some are like Lewis Stanton with a cause. Some are real characters. Most are lost souls. We need to do better for them. Homelessness badly affects their health and compounds their other problems. The origin of Housing First is the United States. Its core philosophy is that getting these people into stable housing is the top priority. It rightly believes that you cannot address the other complex issues these people may have in their lives with addiction, health, employment or family alienation if they do not have a roof over the head and a place to call home. I came across the “Housing First” approach as Minister in the last
government when looking for innovative new housing programmes. We provided funding to trial it where homelessness was most acute, firstly in Hamilton with the Wise Group and then in Auckland with the City Mission. These were successful and got over 1,000 people off the streets and into permanent housing. I was pleased in May 2018 when the new government announced in its first Budget an expansion of the Housing First programme to Nelson. I have been frustrated with the 18 months of subsequent delays and have been lobbying to make it happen. I am delighted this week the programme gets un-

derway. There is no single magic bullet to Nelson’s housing problems. We need to build more homes by freeing up more land, constructing associated infrastructure, training more builders and reducing the bureaucracy of building and resource consents. We need to expand support of first home buyers like the Home Start grants. We need to be careful that excessive rental regulation does not drive up rents or switch homes into Airbnbs. We need to grow the number of social homes available with the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust, Housing NZ and Habitat for Humanity.
I salute our local Salvation Army and its partners for picking up Housing First here in Nelson. I also acknowledge our Night Shelter, St Vincent de Paul, Loaves and Fishes, Kai with Love and many others who have worked for years in supporting our homeless. The volunteers and donors who give of their time and money for these organisations are modern day angels. Homelessness was part of the Christmas story for Joseph and Mary. My hope for Nelson’s new Housing First programme is meaningful help that improves the lives of some of our poorest and most vulnerable. Advt.

Just a thought... Rex and Annie Lynch Announcing the Grand Opening of YWAM Nelson, Sunday December 15th @ 2pm 248 Wakapuaka Rd, Nelson [former Garindale Estate.] God is birthing a dynamic new YWAM work here in the Nelson/Tasman/Marlborough region of New Zealand. In Maori lore, the South Island of NZ is considered the Waka (large canoe) and the Nelson area is the front or tip of the Waka. We believe that YWAM is a prophetic
part of breaking ground physically and spiritually to see God’s Kingdom move forward in NZ and the nations of the world. Our hearts are to see people, young and old alike, encounter the amazing Love of God and discover God’s purpose for their lives. The vision of this base is to carry out the YWAM mandate “to know God and make Him known”. We desire to see all generations from many regions and nations raised up to reach the world through training, evangelism and Mercy Ministries.
Our amazing God has provided the perfect place for this to happen. In early August 2019, the Garindale Estate came on the market. At that stage, YWAM Nelson had just been formally established and had very minimal resources. It would indeed take a miracle for YWAM to be able to purchase the property. On August 5, 2019 the team felt to fast and pray for three days. During that time we were given two passages from Scripture; Joshua 1:11 and Ephesians 3:20.

Nelson Petroleum Distribution (NPD) has temporarily closed its gas filling facility while they await certification, and there may be a local shortage of places for the public to get their LPG bottles re-filled. This was confirmed by Mike Luck, NPDs Retail Manager, who couldn’t provide any further details. While they still swap 9kg bottles, they are no longer refilling them. For Richmond residents who might have 4kg or 12kg bottles and want them filled, you will need to go to Caltex Bishopdale, or out to Wakefield. It is currently unknown when NPD will resume their gas filling services, or whether or not they will be running in time for Christmas.

Netball NZ award for local umpire Jacob Page Reporter
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Waimea College teacher and prominent Nelson umpire Maree Smith has been recognised with a Netball New Zealand Service Award for her contributions to the sport. “It was really amazing, you don’t do these roles for that sort of thing but it was really cool to have the acknowledgement for the years I’ve been active,” she says. “I’ve been umpiring for about 20 years and in that time I’ve got my national badge and once I became too old to go to tournaments, I started umpire coaching which has been pretty cool as well.” She said her transition into umpiring came when she was watching a national tournament in Nelson. “There was a national tournament held here in the late 90s and I was watching and I thought ‘I could do as good of a job as them’ so I thought I’d learn how to do it. “It’s quite satisfying even though you do get a bit of stick.” Smith said she was always motivated to keep progressing through the levels. “First you get your centre badge,
then your zone badge and then your New Zealand badge and then the next goal was to get the New Zealand B badge which is hard to get but it was like a carrot which kept me motivated. My passion has always been the physical umpiring but it is nice to coach the next lot of umpires coming through and watch them make progress,” she says. Smith says the game continues to be physical. “If you get competitive people on the court there’s no way it is going to be non-contact. “You have to find that balance between letting them play and enforcing the rules.” Smith had been part of the New Zealand umpire development group for six years. “Plan A remains coaching and umpiring for as long as I can and I look forward to seeing how long my body allows me to do that.” She said officiating a national under-21 final was a highlight. She also umpired in England where she officiated New Zealand against England in a trial match. “It’s been great because you get to know so many people from Maree Smith’s services to netball have been recognised by the sport’s national body. She is pictured around New Zealand and make at the 2019 Nelson Sports Awards with Don Carter, left and Shane Drummond, right. Photo: Evan life-long friends,” she says. Barnes/Shuttersport.

Richmond swimmer Abbey Smale dominated the women’s field in the King of the Bays, race one of the national Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series, held in Auckland recently. It was the perfect hit-out for 16-year-old Abbey, who travels to Australia on the weekend before Christmas as part of the New Zealand team to compete in the NSW open water championships. Along with four of her Richmond Aquatic Centre training mates, Abbey will compete in events over
5km and 7.5km at Penrith. Ten Nelson swimmers joined a field of just over 500 for the 2.8km swim between Milford and Takapuna on December 7, winning six age group medals and with 16-year-old Abbey finishing sixth overall, splintering the women’s field to win the women’s title a minute ahead of the secondplaced swimmer, with another minute back to third. Conditions weren’t easy, with the swim following the coast and the small swell rising as it hit shallower waters, then bouncing back, making sight-

Wanderers outclassed in Marlborough
The Wanderers-Motueka premier cricket team found the going tough in Marlborough on Saturday. The good weather did not last into Saturday for the Wanderers Sports Club cricket teams. The premier Wanderers Motueka team brought elite level club cricket back to Motueka for the first time in five years and were
able to complete their game, losing to the competition leaders Marlborough Dolphins at Memorial Park. Marlborough batted first and showed why they currently sit top of the ladder, making a comfortable 261 for four. Taylors Wanderers -Motueka bowlers persevered and the first two wickets at 27 and 77 gave
heart, but a commanding partnership of 177 set up a challenging score for the hosts. The four wickets were shared between the Wanderers bowlers but unfortunately the Marlborough bowlers were almost unplayable following the stoppage for rain and with Ben Blackmore taking five for 15, Wanderers-Motueka
were all out for 71, with only Jack White showing any resistance with 31. The second grade team had their game against Motueka washed out after being 160 for six. The third grade team made 165 off their 25 overs, and had Nelson College 55 for three after 10 overs when the rain finished
that match. Next week will see Wanderers-Motueka premiers host ACOB at Centennial Park and the opportunity to continue the development, with the 2nds playing Waimea Toi Toi at Greenmeadows. The College third grade team will play their T25 fixture also against Waimea Toi Toi at Greenmeadows.

Four Waimea College sailors have earned a National Youth Training Week Scholarship. Sarah Charles, Luis Schneider, Ruby Campbell and Macgregor Jones are the lucky winners of the first-ever Mastercard scholarship and as a result, spent a week at Kawau Island with an RNZYS coaching team sailing in Elliott 7 Keelboats.
Easy Carve Boneless Hams
The scholarship is designed to give a team who may not have usually been able to attend – the chance to attend, and this – as well as their obvious interest and dedication to the sport – is one of the reasons why the team from Waimea were selected as winners of this scholarship. Sarah Charles, 16, was on trim last week and has been sailing with the Waimea College Racing Team for four years and
was excited by the opportunity. “Sailing has become a sport I really love, and I can’t thank Mastercard and the RNZYS enough for giving me and my teammates this amazing opportunity.” Bowman Macgregor Jones, 16, started his sailing journey in 2013 when he took up a learn to sail course at the Nelson Yacht Club, and he hasn’t looked back since.
