Acrobatics, clowns, freestyle motorbikes, and the flying trapeze are just a few of the acts that lo-

cals will have the chance to see at The Great Moscow Circus, which arrived in Richmond last week. “Most shows only have 2 or 3 big acts, with 9 acts overall. We’ve got about 20 acts all together so this is jam-packed,” says Ozzy Brophy, who performs in the show

as a clown. Audiences will get to see a range of acts packed into a two-hour show, like the Globe of Death, a circular cage with motorbikes riding around the inside, along with classic trapeze acts. The show, which is currently on an 11-month tour of New Zea-

land, has been all over the world, with recent tours in South Africa and South Korea. While life on the road may seem gruelling to some, for a lot of the performers it’s the only way of life they’ve known. Kiarnna Webber, who performs

in aerial acts in the Great Moscow Circus, has been a performer all her life. For her, circus is in her blood. “I’m a seventh-generation circus performer. I grew up travelling

It’s hard to choose just one as I shop in second-hand shops all the time but if I had to pick one, a handbag.

I once found a vintage rug and some lovely jewellery.

A vanity unit made from teak. A really good find.

A picture of a bird made out of feathers, which I love. It’s the first thing I’d grab in a fire.

Sandra said that the perfomer who was injured came away with minor bruising, and was checked by an ambulance officer after the show. “It was a minor accident with the performer falling to the floor, but he has been checked and everything is ok. He is already back at work, he just had a few minor scrapes and bruises.”

Rain not enough to ease restrictions Matt McCrorie Despite the rain that has fallen across Tasman over the weekend, water restrictions will need to remain in place for the next week, says Tasman District Council’s Environmental Information Manager Rob Smith. The Dry Weather Taskforce meeting that was scheduled to take place on Tuesday 10 March was cancelled, as the decision was made to hold restrictions. “In light of the small amount of rain on

Sunday night and the prospect of a little more again on Wednesday, we are going to hold all the present restrictions as they are for another week,” says Rob. Rob says that despite the rain, the situation has not changed dramatically in the last week, meaning that there is little chance that restrictions will ease. However, Rob says that “cooler nights, crops starting to be harvested, little wind and the small amount of rain we’ve

had is all certainly helping.” Currently, phase B restrictions are in place for Richmond, Hope, Brightwater, Redwood Valley, Eighty-Eight Valley, and Dovedale. These restrictions mean residents can’t water lawns or fill up/ top up a swimming pool, while veggie gardens can be watered with a handheld hose. Phase A restrictions are in place for Wakefield, meaning pools can be topped up and gardens can be watered with a hose.

Equipment failure sees minor injury at the Circus

A piece of equipment failing has meant a minor injury at the Great Moscow Circus, which is currently performing at the A&P showgrounds in Richmond. During the final act on Friday night, a metal see-saw swing fell apart while a performer was in the air. Sandra Espana, of the Great Moscow Circus, said that the corner of the frame came apart unexpectedly. Sandra said while this has never happened before, they had the structure checked thoroughly after the performance and “everything is ok.”

Crash slows traffic on Whakatu

Commuters had a slow drive to work on Monday morning, after a three vehicle crash on Whakatu drive. A truck and two cars collided just after 8am. Four fire trucks, police, and an ambulance attended the scene. St John spokesperson Gerard Campell said that five patients were assessed at the scene, with one person treated for moderate

Arson trial starts

A 34-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman have appeared in the High Court in Wellington, after pleading not guilty to two charges of arson last year. The pair faced two charges of arson, the first in relation to a fire on the Dovedale Hill and another near the Moutere Highway, on February 27 and March 6, respectively. The man was arrested on March 6 in Upper Moutere after locals saw a car fleeing the site of the fire on Dovedale Road. Crown prosecutor Mark O’Donoghue told a jury at the High Court in Wellington that fire investigators determined that the lighting of the fires was deliberate. The trial is expected to take two weeks.

Air NZ meets with Smith over price hikes Matt McCrorie Air New Zealand is looking at its regional pricing structure after a ‘please explain’ meeting with Nelson MP Nick Smith that sought to calm commuters’ fears about airfare hikes. And Nick says if action isn’t taken, a complaint to the Commerce Commission could be on the cards. The meeting came on the back of the Waimea Weekly revealing that the airline had lifted its Nelson prices by upwards of 18 per cent year on year, even before its competitor Jetstar pulled out of the region. Nick took those complaints to top Air New Zealand bosses last week to advocate for fairer fares for the region. He is also asking for transparency in how the airline makes its pricing decisions. “Nelson is an isolated region, geographically, and air services are crucial to our links with the rest of the country.” He says many small and medium businesses that run out of the region provide nationwide services that can’t compete if they are paying excessively for flights. “Our tourism sector also relies on competitive airfares.”

Nick says that he made the point about how important air links are to the Nelson and Tasman communities. “Air New Zealand acknowledged that, with Jetstar’s withdraw, there has been an increase in demand which has increased the average price.” He says more transparency is

Nick Smith needed from airlines, especially from a company where the Government owns 52 per cent of shares. “In many jurisdictions, like the United States and European Union, airlines are required to disclose average airfares by sector. I think the public has the right to know what the average fare is to know whether you’re getting price gouging. “I think more transparency is

required.” Air New Zealand told Nick that the airline needed to take on board some of the criticism around prices. Nick is not ruling out lodging a complaint to the Commerce Commission if there are no changes. “I want to give them a fair opportunity to respond to my concerns.” I the meantime he is encouraging people to use the services provided by both OriginAir and Sounds Air to give the larger company some competition. An Air New Zealand spokesperson said that the meeting with Nick was “productive”. “We have taken on board Nick Smith’s comments.” According to the data provided by Air New Zealand, seats on Nelson routes have increased by more than 130,000 in the last five years. Over this period, the average fare on our Nelson services has fallen, while costs per seat have increased. “Naturally there has been a huge demand for seats on our services post Jetstar’s exit and we have seen flights fill up faster than usual. We expect this will start to balance out going forward.”

around Australia with my family in the circus. “When you’re growing up in circus, you just want to do it. Kids want to copy their parents.” It’s a busy life for performers though, usually spending between 2-3 weeks in a city before moving on. Kiarnna says that the team will pack down the show on a Sunday, travel on a Monday, and be ready to open a new show by Wednesday night.

“It’s hard work, but we were born into it. It’s what we do.” While life on the road can be gruelling, being able to entertain people all around the globe is worth it. “People walk away with a buzz,” Ozzy says. “Our aim is really to get people off their phones for a few hours, and just entertain them. When people are enjoying it, that makes it for us. “We want people to leave their problems at the door and just have a good time.”

The Great Moscow Circus is currently showing at the Richmond Showgrounds on Lower Queen Street, until March 22. Waimea Weekly has a family pass to give away for the show on Saturday, 14 March. Head to our Facebook page for details on how to enter.

Libraries are ‘key’ for healthy communities Matt McCrorie Libraries are increasingly becoming the ‘heart of communities,’ Tasman District Libraries Marketing and Events co-ordinator Pania Walton says. More than just spaces for old books, libraries are important community centres that act as hubs for learning, healthcare, and professional development. According to Te Ara, there are 667 public libraries in New Zealand. That’s nearly four public libraries for every McDonald’s. Public libraries provide free

access to information for everyone, no matter their circumstances. “There’s no social, wealth, class or cultural barriers,” says Pania, “there is free access to information for everyone.” Specialist librarians can guide users to find information, as well as teach users skills they might need. They not only give you a recommendation for your next book, but they can help with computer skills, guide you towards classes or workshops, and can guide users to information that will help them around health and

accessing various different kinds of government services. Libraries are essential for vulnerable and isolated members of the community as well, Pania says. “We have so many people who are able to come and be a part of a community. It improves people’s lives, especially for older people who might be otherwise isolated. “People might have that misconception that they’ll be told to shush. It’s not a place where you get told to shush, more often than not, it’s quite loud in here.”

Former mayor remembered as ‘pragmatic’ and ‘passionate’ Matt McCrorie Kerry Marshall, who served as mayor of both Tasman and Nelson, passed away last week. Kerry, 81, is remembered as the last mayor of Richmond and the first mayor of Tasman, thanks to the 1989 local government reforms. Kerry was a former teacher who became a Richmond borough councillor in 1982 and was elected mayor of Richmond in 1986. Following the 1989 local government reforms, he became the first mayor of the Tasman District, serving for 9 years. He also served as President of Local Government New Zealand. In 2007, he was elected as the mayor of Nelson, beating eight other candidates. He served one term as mayor of Nelson. Current mayor of Tasman, Tim King, says there was “no doubting Kerry’s passion for the region.” “Many of the decisions he guided through the respective chambers during this time prepared the region to be one of the country’s fastest-growing regions. “It was important for him that we retained what was special about the region in the face of

the inevitable growth we are experiencing now.” Tim says that Kerry’s leadership saw him play a leadership position nationally, taking an important role within Local Government New Zealand. “He did all this work with a

Kerry Marshall (1939 - 2020) great sense of humour and was as an entertaining public speaker wherever he went.” “At the heart of all his work was the need to cater for the people he served throughout the Top of the South. Elaine Henry, who served as deputy Mayor of Richmond from 1986-1989, remembers Kerry as ‘pragmatic.’ “While titles are notable, it was the work many did not see that

typified Kerry’s pragmatism and ability to garner respect amongst his peers.” Elaine also remarks on how Kerry was able to oversee the transition from mayor of Richmond Borough to Tasman District. “His leadership and organisational skills saw the Richmond and Motueka Boroughs, and the Waimea County Council, join together and function as Tasman District Council, six months ahead of the national schedule.” Nelson mayor Rachel Reese spoke to Nelson City Council’s environment committee on Thursday last week, and said that Kerry was a man of many passions, including the arts and conservation, and he was a man who “loved people”. Rachel says that “His life was one of service, incredible service.” Former mayor of Tasman, Richard Kempthorne, says that “It is really sad to see the passing of Kerry Marshall.” “Kerry served our district as mayor and local government throughout New Zealand with distinction for many years. We appreciate his contribution made over many years. “My sympathy goes to Kerry’s family.”

Fire risk still high for region Recent rain has done little to ease the fire risk in the Nelson and Tasman regions. Despite recent rainfall across some of the district, fire danger levels throughout most of Nelson and Tasman remain high, says Principal Rural Fire Officer Ian Reade. A total fire ban is still in place across Nelson and Tasman districts, except Golden Bay which has a restricted season due to the higher rainfall there in February. “We still have a large amount of dead grass around from the spring growth that presents a risk for fire ignition and spread,” Ian says. Fire and Emergency NZ is closely

monitoring and assessing the conditions daily. “There is more rain forecast this weekend. If that occurs and there is sufficient green-up of vegetation, we will look to lift the prohibited season (total fire ban) to a restricted season for all of Nelson/Tasman. “We urge people to pay attention to the fire season status in their area and continue to take no risks - one spark is all it takes to start a fire.” When a restricted season is put in place, most open-air fires require a permit. Details about applying for permits in your area can be found atwww. checkitsalright.nz

of catching it here remain very low. We need to be alert, and ready to stamp it out, but at the moment we are still focusing on keeping it out. People do not need to be building stockpiles of food, the case numbers in New Zealand are very low. It is less infections than measles. If someone in a household has measles, 90 per cent of the other people in the house who could catch it do. With Covid-19, it’s between 3-10 per cent. For a lot of people this would be a mild illness, but it would be more severe for people with underlying conditions and older people. For those people it’s important that they are doing everything they can to keep themselves healthy. Would getting the Flu vaccine help?

Symptoms between the Flu and Covid-19 are very similar, and we Property M don’t want to get cases mixed up. Flu season causes busyness in our health system, so the earlier we can get people vaccinated the better. It will mean there is less confusion.

Family challenge to win prizes Susan Johnson Calling all adventure and fun-seekers. Do you like a challenge? Physical and mental. On Saturday, the 18th of April, families can compete to win prizes by completing a mixture of challenges up and down Queen Street in Richmond. Challenges will be designed for all ages, and the teams can be made up of family, friends or neighbours, providing there is a minimum of three people per team. Charlotte Bidlake from Richmond Unlimited, the local business association wanted to create an exciting event for locals and to draw people

to Richmond. “This family event is the best of both worlds, enabling families to spend quality time together while completing challenges right in the heart of the Richmond. Kids love completing quests and games on the computer screen, so why not bring those problem-solving skills out on to the street.” Registration is $25 and there are prizes to be won such as outdoor bean bags, boom speakers, board games and more. Plus spot prizes for best team names and best dressed. The number of teams is limited so register at richmondunlimited. co.nz/queen-street-quest.

Car Company cash up for grabs Staff Reporter Deserving organisations in the Nelson region have the chance to drive away with some much needed cash - thanks to the Car Company’s Charity Drive. The initiative, which launches today, sees $10,000 up for grabs for organisations who apply through the Car Company’s website. “We get approached daily for sponsorship but we only tend

to get people who are aware of us,” says owner Shane Drummond. “I wanted to turn it around and say ‘we have the money, you tell us why you should have it’.” Shane says the majority of their customer base comes from the community. “We are really strong on giving back. We are all locals who are passionate about our community.” Last year they had over 60

applications, with Helping Families Nelson receiving the biggest award of $4500. Other winners were Nelson Lawn Tennis Club, Nelson Whakatu MenzShed, Volunteer Nelson and Whakatu Riding for the Disabled. Application forms are available at www.carcompanynelson.co.nz from March 4, or at Car Company branches in Nelson, Richmond and Tahunanui, closing on April 6.

Having fun and helping raise funds Susan Johnson Lucy Lithgow is holding a fundraising event on her Lower Moutere property next weekend in the name of her father who has Parkinson’s disease. With the help of her family and friends she hopes it will be the beginning of a yearly event that will raise funds towards

community support, research and medication. “My dad has Parkinson’s but my parents live in the UK and I really feel the need to do something, so when I heard that the community support nurse works only two days a week due to lack of funds I decided to try and help with my fundraiser next weekend,” she says.

The fun day on Saturday the 14th starts at 9am at 3 Flett Road, Lower Moutere. There will be pony rides, an obstacle course, stalls, a sausage sizzle and more. Bring a picnic and enjoy a family day out. Gold coin entry for non-entrants of the obstacle course. For more information ph: Lucy 021 148 8691 or www.msnelson.org.nz

Nelson property prices keep on rising Staff Reporter Nelson continues to be an increasingly popular place to live, according to new data that shows house prices climbing at above-average annual rates. The latest QV House Price Index shows a rise of 6.8 per cent of residential property values this year - 1.5 per cent above the national average. The average value for a house in the Nelson is now $653,576 and in Tasman it currently sits at $623,416. QV senior consultant Craig Russell says that the demand for housing is exceeding the supply in the Top of the South. “In recent times, fewer available

properties are creating increased competition.” More expensive properties, over $1.2 million, are far less in demand and are sitting in the market for extended periods of time. “Demand is currently greatest for properties up to $550,000 with investors and first home buyers generally vying for these properties,” Craig says. QV general manager David Nagel says locations dependent on tourism are “likely to be first to feel the pinch” of the global coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, he says, with Nelson’s reliance on tourism and exporting, the virus is likely to cause some unwanted implications within the coming months.

Exciting discovery for local family historian Susan Johnson

Elaine Valk was reading the Waimea Weekly when one of the photos in an article caught her eye. She had an identical photograph in her own family album. In an article published on 4th March, Richmond Hospice shop manager Anete Smith had contacted the paper asking for the readers help with a photo album that had been left with them in a load of do-

nated goods. “The album was nothing much to look at but the photos inside were too good to throw away,” says Anete. “Some dated back over 100 years and followed families through generations.” When Elaine went through the album with Anete she knew all the names in the photos and even had a few of the same photos herself. “We still don’t know who the book belonged to but believe

it has come from a deceased estate,” says Anete. Elaine, who has already been working on her family history and can trace it back to the first Nesbits, William and Rebecca arriving in Nelson in 1842, believes the album is going to be a great help in compiling it further. “I’ll share the album with the rest of the family and I’m hoping a cousin in Christchurch will be able to fill in the blanks,” she says.

Nelson Tasman Hospice chief executive Frans Dellebeke and NBS chief executive Tony Cadigan celebrate the new partnership. Photo: Jonty Dine.

The Nelson Tasman Hospice has signed its first major corporate sponsor for 2020. NBS, which also donated funds for the build of the new hospice in 2019, has signed a two-year partnership with the organisation to help boost its funding. NBS chief executive Tony Cadigan says the NBS team prides itself on giving back to the local community, and supporting the not-for-profit sector is what helps to set them apart from other financial institutions. “The Hospice is such a deserving organisation, it provides a muchneeded and valuable caring service for individuals and their families at what is often one of the most difficult times of their lives. We have a huge amount of respect for their work, and

Nelson Matters

We lost two special New Zealanders last week with the passing of former Tasman and Nelson Mayor Kerry Marshall and former Green Party Co-Leader Jeanette Fitzsimmons. Kerry made a stunning contribution to our region. He taught my wife Linley and was extraordinarily talented teacher in making learning fun. He carried the same infectious positivity into public life as the last Mayor of Richmond Borough then on to become the first Mayor of Tasman for three terms and then Mayor of Nelson for a term. Kerry’s greatest contribution to our region was successfully forging the diverse Richmond, Motueka, Waimea and Golden Bay boroughs

and counties into the Tasman District Council in 1988. Many merged councils of that era remained divided for years. Kerry’s uniting personality proved to be the right person at the right time and in the right place. Projects I worked with Kerry on included the initiatives of Saxton Field sporting complex with Nelson Mayor Peter Malone, the Richmond Aquatic Centre, the Kahurangi National Park, Whakatu Drive and the upgrading of Nelson’s Trafalgar Park facilities. I have always been in awe of Kerry’s natural skill as a speaker and performer. His dapper fashion matched his colourful personality and he could always make young

and old laugh. Some politicians have great minds and others great personalities. Kerry was exceptional in having both. He was very broad in his knowledge and enthusiasm that covered the arts, sport, education and business. Kerry and I have both served Tasman and Nelson, he as Mayor and I as MP. We shared a passion for town and country, working together and favoured a single Nelson District Council. Kerry also contributed nationally through his Presidency of Local Government NZ and chairing the NZ Conservation Authority. I must also pay tribute to Kerry’s wife Colleen who has and contin-

the support they provide in the community.” Tony says, as well as providing a significant yearly donation for the period of the agreement, NBS will also support the Hospice with promotions and provide a presence throughout their local branches. “As we’ve already seen with the level of community support for the build of the Hospice, people in Nelson Tasman region are big-hearted when it comes to a good cause.” Nelson Tasman Hospice chief executive Frans Dellebeke says he was delighted that NBS had made an ongoing financial commitment for the next few years. “We’re a homegrown organisation, by and for the people of the Nelson Tasman region, so it’s wonderful to have the support of NBS.He says the Hospice has a shortfall in funding of more than $1 million each year.

544 Waimea Road, Nelson

ues to make an amazing contribution to Nelson’s music, education and arts communities. We must thank Kerry’s family and the staff of Ernest Rutherford for the care they took of this wonderful man over his last years. I shared 14 years in Parliament with former Alliance and then Green MP Jeanette Fitzsimmons. She led the brave move in 1988 for the Green party to split from Jim Anderton’s Alliance Party and she did so with total class and without bitterness. Many commentators wrote the Greens off but with then coleader Rod Donald the party went on to prosper while the Alliance collapsed.

I spent years on select committees with Jeanette. We shared a passion for nature and we kept in touch since she retired from Parliament. She was principled, intelligent and built main stream support for the environment cause. Jeanette Fitzsimmons and Kerry Marshall leave a legacy and style of public leadership that sets a high bar. Respect for democracy worldwide is being tested by politicians who thrive on division and nastiness. Many accept it is just part of politics. Kerry and Jeanette showed it is possible to lead and be pleasant, polite and professional. May they Rest in Peace. Advt.

Just a thought... Rev. Martin Sungchel Oh Nelson-Tasman Methodist Parish How often do we judge people by their outlook? I recall an incident which occurred back in Auckland when I worked for a Church up there. I was driving home in our Church van and was approached at an intersection by a young man – he looked a bit scruffy and suspicious. He asked where our Church is located, so I gave him some quick directions before I drove off when the lights turned green. I did not think much further of this interaction at the time. The following Sunday, the same man attended our Church service. I discovered that he had just arrived to New Zealand and was looking for a Church family to join for fellowship. Fast forward, he ended up becoming our Church organist for many years until he eventually moved on. This experience taught me not to judge people by their appearances. I am aware that it’s not an easy thing to do. Here in Richmond and Nelson, when we come across homeless people in the streets, some may not feel comfortable with their presence. But we as a Church try to help them. To be completely honest, I was initially not entirely comfortable talking with them when we first met them outside in our Wesley garden. But ever since winter last year, we have been supporting them. The basic idea of “just a cup of tea” was how we kicked things off, as surely everyone deserves to have a hot drink in the winter. They come almost every Wednesday morning and we share some valuable time with them. Now we have extended our support even further by providing a shower room in our Church building. This is so that they can access their basic humans needs to a warm shower and feeling clean. We are a small Church congregation with a big heart. We will give and share what we can with the people of this community. So next time you come across a homeless person, try your best to not judge them by just their outlook – everyone has a story. Perhaps give them a gentle smile or a simple hello – you might make their day.

Family fun at the Snapper Cup 2020 Susan Johnson It was an early start for the annual Snapper Cup competition in Richmond this year. Members of the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club had their hooks baited and ready to go at 5am on Saturday, hoping for a share of the $10,000 prize pool. With 16 categories including six for junior members, this was an event the whole family could be involved in.

Di Connelly, who went with her husband Michael, enjoyed the event because although she doesn’t fish, she meets interesting people from all walks of life. “It’s a great day out, the kids love it, and the size of fish they bring in is amazing,” she says. On the menu were snapper, gurnard, kahawai, kingfish and crayfish with fishing restricted to the Tasman Bay and fish having to be caught

using only rods and reels or a spear gun. In its fourth year, the event is the major event in the club’s calendar and was well attended with around 160 members registered, 40 of whom were kids. The heaviest fish of the day was a snapper caught by Luke Dell at 10.5kgs who won a $1184 prize pack from Big Blue Dive and Fish, followed by Mike Connolly with a 10.2kg snapper earning him

a $800 prize pack from DNA boats. The heaviest kingfish was caught by Shane Harwood weighing in at 8.1kgs, winning him a $1196 prize pack from Big Blue Dive and Fish. Big money could be won for closest average weight, which for 2020 in the adult category was 3.9kgs and the closest was Dan Monopoly who won $3600. Weighing was done at Waimea Old Boys Rugby Club in Richmond.

Volunteer Fire Fighters Awareness Community says ‘thanks’ to local firefighters

It has been just over one year since the Pigeon Valley Fire ominously loomed over local villages and townships. The blaze, which started following a spark caused by farming equipment, grew into a major fire which threatened Wakefield and forced the evacuation of several thousand residents. A state of emergency was declared in Nelson-Tasman and the fire was described as the country’s largest since 1955. The battle to contain it was fought on the ground and in the air, and residents were able to return to their homes on February 21st, however soon afterwards, a new fire broke out in Redwood Valley. On March 6th, 2019, Nelson Tasman Emergency Management Group announced that the fires were fully contained and controlled. The

community is extremely grateful for the tremendous efforts by firefighting crews in the region for averting such a disastrous threat to locals and their land and for all their work in countless other daily emergencies. Whether it’s fires, car accidents, medical callouts, chemical spills or adverse weather events, local communities are hugely thankful to all the paid and volunteer fire fighters for the work they do, risking their own lives to protect others, along with their homes and businesses. In July 2017, a new authority was established called Fire and Emergency New Zealand under which numerous fire stations serve our local region, including Richmond, Wakefield, Tapawera, Upper Moutere, Mapua and Nelson; meanwhile our region’s voluntary rural fire forces include Appleby, Brightwater, Glen/Hira,

In February 2019, local firefighting crews fought hard for many weeks to contain the Pigeon Valley fire which encroached on local villages and towns and forced the evacuation of many residents. By early March, the situation was fully contained, and locals remain very grateful to local fire crews. Marahau, Lake Rotoiti, Ngatimoti, Tasman, Upper Takaka and Wainui Bay. Nationwide, there are over 8000 volunteer firefighters along with an additional 3000 volunteers who volunteer for rural fire forces.

Become a volunteer

Almost anyone can join a Brigade or Fire Force and the roles vary a lot; Operational Volunteer Firefighters (Urban) are front line members who make up the crews at fires, car crashes, medical in-

cidents and hazardous substance callouts. Operational Volunteer Firefighters (Rural) are part of local teams trained to respond to vegetation fires, structure fires and car accidents. There are also Operational Support roles across rural and urban services. To find out more, talk to your local brigade to find out whether they are looking for volunteers. You will be asked to fill out an application form, you will need to pass a security check and be deemed medically fit for duties.

Safety checklists

To avoid a fire in your home, there is a comprehensive checklist available on the Fire and Emergency New Zealand website, which includes things like: making sure there are smoke alarms installed in every bedroom, living area and hallway, keeping your

Outside on your property, recommendations include removing overhanging branches, cleaning all dead leaves from your roof and gutters and clearing thick vegetation within 10 metres of windows.

In the event of a fire

If there’s a fire in your house, you will only have around 3 minutes to get out. NZ Fire and Emergency, recommends you should do several things immediately: 1. If there are others in the house, shout ‘FIRE, FIRE, FIRE!’ 2. If there’s smoke, crawl low and fast to escape smoke. Smoke is toxic – if you breathe it in, it can kill you.

3. If possible, close doors behind you to stop the fire spreading. 4. If you can’t get out of the house, close the door of the room you are in and put a towel under to stop smoke coming in. Go to the window and yell ‘Fire, Fire, Fire!’ and wait for help. 5. If you can’t open the window, consider using a chair or other furniture to break the glass. Use bedding to cover sharp pieces of glass to escape unharmed. 6. As soon as it’s safe, call 111 immediately, either from a mobile phone or neighbour’s house. 7. Meet at your agreed safe meeting place, away from the house. Once you are out of the house, stay out. Never go back inside. Tell arriving firefighters whether you are all out safely or if there’s anyone missing. If you see a fire, call 111 and

There are a lot people can do in their own homes to lessen the chances of a fire erupting, with lots of helpful advice available on www.fireandemergency.nz including a comprehensive safety checklist. ask for ‘Fire’ immediately and provide the following details: house number, street name, nearest intersection, suburb and city or rural address property identification (RAPID) if you have one.

Create an escape plan

You can use the online escape planner tool to make your home fire safe. To build

your escape plan, you will be asked to think about: - Smoke alarms in your home. - How you will make sure everyone in your household gets out. - A safe place where everyone will meet. - What are your best and alternative ways out.

Check your fire weather

You can check the fire weather in your area by going to www.checkalright.nz. You will find up-to-date weather observations and forecasts which are crucial for determining fire danger and fire behaviour. You can also look out for ‘fire danger’ signs in your region which indicate the current fire risk in your area: low, moderate, high, very high or extreme. Knapps Lawyers’

BOULDER BANK WALK March is such a beautiful time of year — the perfect opportunity to be part of the annual Knapps Lawyers’ Boulder Bank Challenge, which raises funds for Coastguard. Managed as a scenic reserve by the Department of Conservation, the Boulder Bank is composed of granodiorite pebbles, cobbles and boulders derived from nearby Mackay Bluff. Early Māori used the Boulder Bank for gathering birds and seafood. European fishermen later mended their nets on the Boulder Bank and built simple baches, six of which remain.

Hosted by the Rotary Club of Nelson West since 2010, this year’s Boulder Bank Walk takes place this Sunday March 15th. Buses depart from outside Styx on Wakefield Quay and go to Boulder Bank Drive, and people then walk along the Boulder Bank to The Cut (around 9 kms), which takes around 3 hours. Boats will then bring participants back to Wakefield Quay. Along the walk, participants can visit the historic baches and lighthouse. Many also pick up plastic and other rubbish that washes up on the Boulder Bank and Some bach owners will be on site and you

Have your say and go in the draw to WIN a $50 Richmond Mall Voucher each month waimeaweekly and www.waimeaweekly.co.nz For Nick Smith to say he is “disappointed at the Waimea Dam cost blow out and that investigations should have picked up problems” (with the geology) beggars belief (WW 4th March); the risk was pointed out by many people, including professionals, but ignored by Council and by Dr Smith (himself an engineer, I believe). Equally, Dana Wensley was a Councillor when the dam was approved, despite its historical cost escalations. I also have news for her. In common with the Council, Central Government actually has no money but only manages/ mismanages and allocates the taxpayers’ (council = rate payers’) money so whichever way one looks at it, the ratepayer/ taxpayer will carry the cost. The contract with Waimea Water Limited, as I understand it, leaves the ratepayers carrying anything in excess of a $3million blowout; what idiot agreed to that? Over the past six years, at least, there were a number of credible alternatives to the dam proposed but none were independently investigated, or seriously considered; one wonders why? The simple answer is that the dam was an easy option for the WWL group and many of the people leading the council had clear vested interests. I suspect we are too far down the track to stop and reconsider and we are stuck with the dam BUT those councillors who have pushed this through have been shown to be, at best, incompetent (at worst I won’t speculate) and as such are not worthy of representing the Tasman electorate. I look for one Councillor to raise a motion of no confidence in the key councillors who have brought us to this point and the courage of other councillors to support the motion (but I won’t hold my breath). Norman Phillips BSc, PhD Richmond

I would like to respond to points raised in a recent article regarding government support for the Nelson/Tasman region’s infrastructure projects. During February, Minister Jones was challenged by MP Nick Smith as to the value of investments by the regional development fund over unemployment figures. Jones responded that he had been advised that if further assistance was required for Nelson projects, he was under no circumstances to associate them with Nick Smith as National MPs had a history of rushing to bask in the reflected glory of regional development initiatives taken by others. Given that these comments were directed to Nick Smith it seems somewhat disingenuous or even manipulative for him to now call out for central government support to fund cost blowouts on the dam. Further, the inference that geological faults were unexpected is misleading, especially given that opponents of the dam campaigned on this very issue. It appears that Nick Smith is a roadblock to ratepayer’s future peace of mind. Perhaps it would benefit all if Mayor King and CEO Mike Scott independently petitioned Minister Jones. Central government has already stepped up financially and is likely to again. Climate change, population growth and greater demand on natural resources dictate that the dam now underway must continue even if it seems that the primary beneficiaries are, at present, irrigators for production. I’d like to ask where our Mayor and Council stand on the issue and what action is being taken. Is it time for National to recognise that this issue has festered for years and cannot be allowed to fail due to political ideological differences to the detriment of ratepayers? Region’s fines top $1.5million Sara Hollyman Nelsonians forked out a whopping $1.6 million in speeding fines last year, the most since 2013. The figures released by New Zealand Police show that more than 24,000 speeding tickets were issued in Nelson Bays during 2019, from a combination of mobile speed cameras and officer-issued infringements. Almost 19,000 of the tickets came from mobile speed cameras strategically placed around the region. The large figure is the most paid out in the region since 2013, when the figure sat just over $1.7 million. Over the hill in Marlborough, drivers were issued just $737,000 of speeding fines throughout the year, half as much as Nelson. Nationally, drivers copped more than $115million in speeding fines during 2019. As well as being hit in the pocket for speeding, Nelsonians also racked up more than $268,000 in road-related fines for not wearing seatbelts, using mobile phones while driving and running red lights. Tasman road policing manager, senior sergeant Grant Andrews, says it’s extremely disappointing to see the figures rising. “It’s just really poor,” he says. “We’d love to go out there and not issue anyone a ticket, it would be great, but the reality is people are just getting worse, particularly with using their phones.” In 2019, 977 infringements were given to drivers for using their mobiles, up from 555 the previous year. Grant says if driver’s attitudes don’t change, the numbers will increase again this year. “These are the things that cause people injuries; not wearing restraints, using mobiles, driving while impaired and speeding. We will be doing weekly operations to make sure these people are held to account, we would like to mount these operations and have a negative

result, that would be fantastic.” Grant says it’s not just about the person using their phone or speeding. “It’s about the people they are putting at risk and the lifechanging injuries that they can inflict on the pedestrians or the other road users.”

Figures from police show how much Nelsonians have paid out in fines.

The club did a review last year of all its teams with regards to ‘what their experience is worth,’ and has subsequently implemented some changes. “There’s been a number of initiatives which are very positive which bodes well for the future.” The Wanderers enjoyed a relatively successful season last year, making the semi-finals of every competition the teams were in and it’s hoped that this year’s involvement will extend on that. Wanderers trio make under-19s Jacob Page A trio of Wanderers rugby players have been named in the Tasman under-19 squad for the upcoming season. Taylor Berkett, Jake Jenner and Jake Goeddert have all been selected with the rugby season set to begin at the end of March. For Goeddert, it’s good motivation after an injury-plagued last couple of years thanks to his right knee. “It’s great to be selected for

this,” he says. “I didn’t expect to get a chance at it again. “I’m really hoping I can play a full season of rugby for Wanderers and show what I can do.” The hooker and former captain of Waimea Combined, for whom he played more than 50 games over three seasons, said he was eager to prove himself in 2020 and would be motivated by the selection. Berkett has gone through a time of transition himself. After playing much of his rugby in the front row, he has

moved to a flanker role and is loving it. “The move worked for me because I got skinnier and was always pretty mobile anyway,” he said. “I would always play like I was fetching the ball, so it has worked out.” The Waimea Old Boys club are represented by Max Fraine, Taya Brown, Zach Andrews and Angus Kay in the squad. The 40-strong squad will come together for their first training on March 23.

Nelson fifth at Evergreens tournament Jacob Page The Nelson Evergreens softball team have finished fifth at the annual tournament on home soil at Saxton Field over the weekend. They started the tournament with wins over Tauranga and the Combined Services team before a narrow defeat to eventual runners-up Wairarapa 9-8. Day two began with a last

gasp loss to last year’s winners Southland. The team bounced back to end the event with victories over Hutt Valley and Auckland. Canterbury won the final 9-1 after finishing 16th and last twelve months ago. Event organiser and Nelson player, Alex Oliver, said he was thrilled to finish fifth. “I thought we hit really well, fielded in the infield well and

23

took some great outfield catches. “The body may not be as willing as the mind but it’s still competitive while we have fun,” he said. “We’ve built the team back up so to finish fifth is great.” From an organisational standpoint, things went very well. We had lots of positive comments and Club Waimea hosted us really well.”

Stack smashes 34-year record Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Waimea College’s Adam Stack smashed the over-16’s high jump record this week, beating a record that was set by James Campion in 1986. James set the record at 1.9 metres in 1986, a record he shared with Neil Gardener, Adam’s uncle. He still remembers the day in 1986. “It was on the back field at Waimea College, and the whole school turned up to watch. It was a phenomenal day.” “Neil bombed out, so I won the competition, but we just continued to see what we could set. “They had to do it after lunch, and it was just on grass on the back field, so it’s a bit different to the turf they’re on at Saxton these days.” For 34 years, his record was left untouched. Until this week. “A few weeks ago, one of the staff got in touch with me and said, ‘Hey, we think someone is going to beat your record’ and looking at his [Adam’s] other records, it wasn’t surprising.” That’s because Adam holds every other high jump record in the school. “He’s consistently been getting closer and closer. “I thought I better make sure I came down and saw it for myself,” James says. At 2pm on Monday, at Waimea College’s athletics day at Saxton field,

James’ longstanding record was shattered. Almost with ease, Adam soared past James’ 1.9 metre record that had remained untouched for 34 years, breaking the record at 1.91m. Keen to put a bit of distance between himself and James, Adam soared over the bar, setting a new record at 1.95m. For Adam, the new record was the payoff for a lot of hard work. “I started jumping when I was probably about 10, and something really sparked in me at 12. “It was a challenge, for sure.” There was no doubt of consistency in the judging department, with Waimea College teacher Lee Smith, who judged the record in 1986, still judging 34 years later. “It was fantastic to watch all those years ago, and great to see another athlete do so well.” Waimea college principal Scott Haines says that he was ‘blown away’ by the performance of Adam. “1.95, that’s taller than me. Absolutely phenomenal to see a student doing so well.” James says he’s thrilled to see another athlete do so well. “I’ve got mixed emotions,” says James, whose record was finally snatched from him. “It’s a great achievement, and it was fantastic just to watch an athlete - and I use that word seriously, because he is a true athlete - like Adam perform.” “I did jump on grass though, so I’ll hold on to that,” he laughs.

Kelly and Smale take the lead at the Big Tahuna Peter Gibbs Swimmers Luke Kelly and Abbey Smale took full advantage of local knowledge, taking out the top male and female spots respectively in race four of the national Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series, The Interislander Big Tahuna, held in Nelson on Saturday. It wasn’t a flash in the pan for either, with Kelly defending his title from last year and Smale dominating this year’s series, having won all three of the previous races in Takapuna, Wellington and Akaroa. Kelly was the winner in Wellington in January, but has yet to upset Auckland’s Sebastian Priscott, who won race one in Takapuna in December and defeated Kelly in race three in Akaroa two weeks ago. to the right. When they stood up in shallow water, Kelly had a slight edge, with only seconds separating him from Squance, Drummond, Bayley and Smale, who took out the women’s title, cementing her series victory with three races still to go. Alex Dunkley from Auckland was a minute back, followed by Nelson’s Terry Bone, winner of the M45-49 age group. In an interesting development, Nelson teenager Isabella Thurlow looked to have second place in her grasp, but decided to take on the slide, allowing Sammi Harnett of Christchurch to take the women’s silver medal with Thurlow taking the bronze. Nearly 500 took part in the day’s swimming. Details and full results at oceanswim.co.nz.

Akaroa, Nelson produced glassy seas and a fine day for the main event - a 3km swim from Tahunanui Beach around Fifeshire Rock. A Nelson quintet of Kelly, Smale, national triathlon champion Hayden Squance, Fergus Drummond and Oxford Bayley formed a tight group leading the field around the triangular course. A feature of the event is a large four-lane water slide just off the beach, with swimmers being encouraged to climb on to it, run along one of four runways and slide back into the water. None of the serious swimmers seemed inclined to use this option, which seemed certain to take longer than swimming around it. As the lead group rounded the obstacle, Squance went left, the others took a course

Running ‘a new addiction’ for local mother Yvonne West While the Nelson Summer Running programme might be a great way to get fit, or to enjoy the summer weather outdoors, it has been life changing for one local - mother of four, Rebecca Glen. Rebecca had not run since childhood, so when a friend asked her to go to the Honest Lawyer 5km Fun Run starting early November, she had to decline, but in her mind decided she did want to run to get healthier and stop smoking. She decided to get out in the evenings to see if she could actually run. While she was exhausted and feeling sick within a short distance, she persevered every second evening until she got up to about 4kms. At that stage she decided to take the plunge and go to the Honest Lawyer Run. Rebecca admits to being very nervous, having to push herself to complete the distance and collapsing in a ‘sweaty, panting mess’ at the end. Over the next month she improved her time over the 5km distance and then started out on the Saturday Pub Runs of about 7 kms. With persuasive encouragement from her teenage son, Rebecca entered the New Year’s Day Monaco 10 km race, took short walks on 3 occasions, but kept going and completed the course. She went on to do the 6am Zumo 5km races, unable to believe people got up to race for fun at that ridicu-

lously early time of the day. However, the feeling after completing the runs was amazing and she felt so much more productive afterwards. By the second week of January, Rebecca had drastically reduced the number of cigarettes she was having. Certainly not feeling like smoking after running, she felt she was now ready to quit completely, trading one addiction in for a much healthier one. Rebecca had her last cigarette on January 14th, and says that she has never felt fitter or healthier in her life. She also says that she has met some lovely supportive people through running and will never look back. Her new addiction has led her to competing in other races in Nelson’s Summer Running Programme such as the Eddyline 5km Series, and longer runs including the epic 20 km Mt Robert Mountain Run. Rebecca has just entered her first half-marathon which she will run in May this year. This story has not ended, it is just the beginning. Rebecca intends to keep running and encourages anyone else to give running a go to help quit an unwanted addiction and to realise their capacity to push through difficult situations in their lives. She is an inspiration to those who who wish to totally change their lifestyle - for the better.
