Arson victims overwhelmed by support Simon Bloomberg Reporter

PC Systems officer manager Sally Cadigan says “Richmond is awesome” after their neighbouring businesses came to the rescue following Friday’s devastating arson attack on their offices on McGlashen Ave. The fire, allegedly lit in a skip bin next to the building by two youths late on Friday night, caused extensive damage to PC Systems office as well as destroying an estimated $250,000 worth of stock. All the stock in next door’s Rowan Dron Electrical was also damaged although fortunately no one was injured in the blaze that started just after 11pm. Police apprehended the youths, aged nine and 13, as they were allegedly trying to set fire to a bus in the nearby Nelson Coachlines depot, after receiving a 111 call from two freedom campers in Petrie Carpark. The 13-year-old has been charged with arson and will appear in the Nelson Youth Court on Wednesday. Although PC Systems lost everything in the blaze, it was business as usual for the company on Monday after staff and neighbouring Richmond businesses rallied around to help. PC Systems was able to find a temporary premises just 30m away after quick work by a real estate agent over the weekend allowing them

Staff brought all their own laptops to work to get things upand-running while Sinful Coffee owner Lisa Buchanan provided a free lunch for everyone at PC Systems and Rowan Dron Electrical. drew Healy Signs came out on Sunday to arrange new signage for their temporary offices. “Richmond is awesome,” Sally says. “We’ve had so many offers of help.” “We had the keys to the temporary office half an hour after we called the real estate agent about a leasing the building and our phone people were here working over the weekend. Sinful turned up with lunch on Monday and
OPD arrived with a desk and pens. We’ve had so many offers of help with moving and our customers have been amazing. It’s been very, very cool.” PC Systems co-owner Neil Albury says the amount of support from the business community has been “overwhelming”. Although he estimates they lost $250,000 of equipment in the blaze, he says their business is a “cloud based” computer company that could
continue operating. Neil is also surprisingly philosophical about the arson attack saying “I’m not dwelling on that”. He also wants to thank the two freedom campers who called emergency services and then valiantly tried to put out the fire using plastic bags of water to douse the flames. “I’ve never lost anything important, no. My son did find a watch on a beach in Auckland once, and a skateboard at the same time.”
“I found $400, it was left by a guy who was travelling NZ, it had cards and everything. I was driving him on the bus, and I was able to give it back to him personally.”
“I left my handbag in a taxi in Samoa. The driver waited over an hour to return it, missing out on $200 worth of fares, everything was there. Restored my faith in humanity.”
“I found a smartphone in the Richmond Mall carpark, so I handed it straight into police. They got back to me to say that it had been returned to the owner.” Teachers and children at Kiwi Explorers Early Education Centre in Hope dressed up in gold for a visit by St John Ambulance staff on Friday. Andrew Marriot is in the business of a perfect smile, so protecting the teeth of local kids with free mouthguards is a perfect fit. The long-standing sponsorship of free mouthguards for junior rugby players between Nelson Orthodontics and Tasman Rugby Union has now ticked over a couple of milestones: ten years and more than 50,000 mouthguards donated. Andrew says he’s delighted to help protect the teeth of Nelson kids. “As the only orthodontists in town, we feel a community responsibility and we really want
to focus on stuff that involves youth, dental health and giving back to the community. The feedback we get from some of the clubs is that it saves the parents money and some have even said it’s the difference between a kid playing sport or not because buying a mouthguard is just an extra expense.” As junior rugby prepares to kick off for another season after the school holidays, new Tasman Rugby Union rugby development officer Mark Cochrane says mouthguards will soon be handed out to local clubs and schools. “It has been a great, longstanding relationship. War medals lost and found Simon Bloomberg
The sharp eye of a machine operator at the Richmond refuse transfer station and skilled detective work from a retired service man have helped reunite a former RAF pilot with the medals he was awarded for serving in WWII and the Middle East. Loader driver Yogi Takimoana miraculously found the medals and RAF wings among a pile of rubbish while working at the transfer station last month. They were handed into the police who then notified the RSA which immediately called on the expert services of Nelson’s Ian Martyn to find their rightful owner. Ian has reunited 131 military medals with the recipients or their families since setting up Medals Reunited New Zealand in 2014. He is the RSA’s go-to-person when lost medals turn up, often in the most unusual circumstances, and only needed 36 hours to reunite the medals with the owner, Reg Clarke of Richmond. Ian says he recognised the medals allowing him to narrow the search to “someone who had served as a

search because there was no first name or service number and there are hundreds of RJ Clarkes around the world. “I started with on-line UK military archives and family trees to try and determine who RJ Clarke was, when and where he had served – nothing however was easily accessible. I then checked the obvious and went through the Nelson phonebook but there was nothing there so checked local cemetery records. “That didn’t turn up anything either so I then looked at old electoral rolls for the Tasman and Marlborough areas. It was here I found Reginald John Clarke who was listed as a civil pilot living in Blenheim in 1969. “That was the connection I needed – a pilot who had lived in the area. It turned out he’d been a pilot with Safe Air but on checking the phone book there was still no RJ Clarke listed although there was a J I Clarke at the same address. “I thought that Reg had probably passed away but when I phoned, Reg’s ex-wife Janet answered and to my surprise said he was still alive and gave
me his contact details in Nelson. Janet said they had emigrated from England in 1966 after Reg had retired from the RAF to pilot Bristol Freighters for Safe Air at Woodbourne”. When Ian took the medals around to Reg to confirm their
RAF pilot Reg Clarke in 1957. identity, he says the retired RAF pilot was astounded. Ian’s colleague Brian Ramsay offered to mount the medals for free and they were handed over in an emotional ceremony last Thursday. Reg, who joined the RAF as an apprentice aircraft mechanic in the last six months of WWII before later retraining as a pilot and serving in the Far East Air Force in the run up to the
1956 Suez Crisis, says he was initially “baffled” when Ian informed him about his medals. “I didn’t realise they were lost so I was quite baffled,” Reg says. “I keep them in a cupboard in my bedroom but they must have got mixed up with some other things when we cleaned up the house. “I’m delighted the gentleman found them and took the trouble to hand them in. I didn’t get them for anything heroic or anything like that but I do value them - they represent a big part of my life.” Reg was awarded the 1939-45 War Medal and 1918-62 General Service Medal with clasps for the Near East and Canal Zone. Although Ian says the 36 hours he needed to reunite Reg with his medals was relatively fast work, he has taken as little as 21 minutes. In contrast, the longest Ian has taken “so far” is two years to reunite a Boer War medal found in an old house in Northland with the descendant family living in Northumberland in the UK. Ian, who served for 37 years in the New Zealand army and air force as well as the Australian air force, says he always gets a huge amount of satisfaction when he hands over a medal. “I’ve reunited medals to families in Australia, the UK, Canada, US and all over New Zealand,” Ian says. “Sometimes the families don’t even know that the relative even existed and they are overwhelmed when they get the medals. “They are always so pleased and usually ask “how much” but as it’s a free, 100 per cent not-for-profit service, I just say ‘ my pleasure to be of service ’ and hand them over.” Ian says he writes up the history of each successfully reunited medal which can be found on the website medalsreunitednz.co.nz

Finding Leo ‘a relief’ It was the cold case that had stumped police, intrigued the wider public and left a Nelson family heart-broken. But last Monday a simple operation to recover an anchor by two crew members of a visiting super yacht blew the case of the whereabouts of Nelson teenager Leo Lipp-Neighbours, missing since January 2010, wide open. Nelson Weekly spoke with the people who were there on the day, helping to bring Leo’s distinctive Toyota Corolla from the water off Wakefield Quay. Here is how they felt, in their own words. The diver, Diving Services NZ Bruce Lines: “My overall feeling of the situation... I guess like everyone else involved, I feel relieved I was able to help the family and the Nelson community get some closure. There’s a little bit of retrospect, and people approaching searches in the future might think differently. It’s crazy when you put the dots together. “I found it pretty quickly. It was a fair way out really. Further than you’d think. Then again, there could’ve been some movement over the years from prop wash from ships and tugs working around that area. So I rubbed the door panel and straight away a bright yellow popped out. Instantly, I thought of Leo. I guess it’s such an unusual thing to see a yellow vehicle, you just don’t see them, apart from the odd Lamborghini, so it was a real trigger, and the fact it was old. It looked like it had been there for years, and I thought s*** that’s two likely scenarios.” The volunteers, Nelson Surf Lifesaving Club president Marcus Gardner: “From our point of view it’s really good we could assist and help with the recovery. It helps us feel as a group that we’ve done what we can do. It’s good to have a result, but sad it has taken so long to find the car. But it’s just the reality when you do searches. It’s hard to know where someone can go, and we can only search on the basis of what information we have.” The detective, Sergeant Mark Kaveney: “I’ve been the officer in charge of the case since the day Leo went missing. From my perspective, it’s a relief for the family. Obviously, there is still an identification process that needs to be
completed, but it has been an absolute nightmare for his family for the last seven years, and hopefully they may be able to now get some form of closure from Leo’s disappearance.” The journalist, Nelson Weekly editor Andrew Board: “It was the most surreal day. Huddled with other

.CO.NZ Sections sell for ‘eye-watering’ prices Nelson home values continue to see strong value growth, up 16.9 per cent over the last year and 4.5 per cent over the past three months, the latest monthly QV House Price Index show. The average value in the city is now $522,201. Values also continue to rise in the Tasman district with an increase of 16.3 per cent over the last year and 2.7 per cent over the past three months. The average value in the district is now $512,754. With such strong growth over the past 12 to 18 months, affordability has become a major issue. Man charged with fleeing police A 28-year-old man is facing several charges after fleeing from police last Monday. The man was initially spotted sitting in a parked vehicle outside Waimea Old Boys Rugby Club. “As police approached, the man lifted his head and began driving towards the officers, and the officers had to take evasive action to avoid being hit,” says Sergeant Dale Smith. “The man then fled from police, crashing his car a short time later on the corner of Lower Queen Street and Swamp Road.” The man is facing charges of driving while disqualified, reckless driving, aggravated assault, and other driving and drug-related charges.

Andy and Tom building on their career changes Simon Bloomberg Two of Nelson’s top apprentice builders and workmates, Andy Wells and Tom Ashley, have taken an unconventional path to their new careers, exchanging snowboards and bicycles for hammers and tool belts. Andy and Tom, who both work for Tasman Homes, finished first and third respectively in the New Zealand Certified Builders (NZCB) Apprentice Challenge regional finals at ITM Nelson on Saturday. Although they are both well on the way to becoming accomplished tradesmen, they have taken their time to find their dream job. “I started-off doing an outdoor education degree and then going rock climbing, white water rafting and snowboarding for 15 years,” Andy, who is in his third year of his apprenticeship, says. “I was a snowboard instructor in Canada for years and came back here in summer and go to Queenstown or do other outdoor stuff.” Although Andy, 36, is a late starter in the building industry, he was always interested in “working with my hands and making things”. Andy says his step-father was a builder and he helped him build their family home and

Andy won the challenge, while Thomas finished in third place. I’m really enjoying the building and I still get up to Rainbow once a year and go for a bit of a slide so we’re really happy.”’ Tom, 23, started his building apprenticeship after a stint as a pro cyclist racing in New Zealand and Belgium.
“Cycling and building are quite different things but there are similarities, you learn to work quite hard as a cyclist, as any athlete really, and it translates quite well,” Tom says. “I just like making stuff, there’s nothing better than a good honest day on the building site and you always have something to show for it at the end. It’s definitely pretty different but I like living back in Nelson, you get that balance of doing activities like riding my bike and rock climbing in the weekends rather
than coming home from work every day and having to go riding straight away.” Tom says Tasman Homes Owner Garry Nott “really got behind us, he actually went in and changed all the blades on the saws and was probably more serious than us”. “Andy and I both went in with the strategy of using templates which definitely helped with the angles and things on the day. Garry was up north at a wedding and flew back just as we finished so as soon as we landed Andy was on
the phone to him and Garry was pretty chuffed I think.” Garry says Andy and Tom are both top employees who work hard and learn fast. “It’s a very tough competition to win so they did really well. They are going to be very good builders but we can take some of the credit for picking them right.” The seven finalists had to complete a practical test which involved building an outdoor table and bench seating. NZCB chief executive Grant Florence says fostering more quality apprentices is critical for the future of New Zealand’s growing building industry. It is especially critical in context of the construction boom and current shortage of qualified builders to meet demand, he says. “It’s great to see so many of Tasman’s local apprentices taking up the opportunity to participate in the NZCB Apprentice Challenge,” he says. “NZCB is pleased to give back to the community by way of donating the finished products, with materials sponsor ITM.” Andy won a Makita Drill and Driver and a $300 ITM gift voucher, and will represent Tasman in the national final to be held at the NZCB annual conference in Auckland on May 26-27.

Richmond Menzshed member Ian Clark, left, with John Appelman and the windmill that John’s father Kees originally constructed. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
Menzshed restore windmill Jessie Johnston They’ve handcrafted children’s toys, constructed the reindeer display for Richmond Mall and for the past few weeks, one Richmond Menzshed member has been hard at work refurbishing a miniature windmill. It’s a windmill many people may recognise from outside The Grape Escape, as it’s café owner John Appelman’s father, Kees, who originally built the piece around 18 years ago. “Somebody sent him a plan from Holland many years ago and it’s all to scale. Of course where we come from there’s windmills left right and centre so it does have a lot of sentimental value,” says John. The original plans were from 1946 and are based off a real windmill in the Netherlands, Kees building a perfect miniature in his spare time which initially sat in the middle of a pond in his backyard. Before retiring, Kees was a woodworker by trade in Holland and also here in Nelson when he emigrated but, “he’s gotten on quite a bit in age, so he hasn’t been able to repair it and he doesn’t have any tools anymore,” says John.
After 18 years in the sun and the rain, the windmill had greatly deteriorated and was in dire need of some maintenance. “Then somebody told me about the Menzshed, I didn’t even know what the Menzshed was,” says John. He took his request to the shed where Ian Clark put his hand up to take on the project. “It was done over several weeks, a little bit here, little bit there. I had no other job on at the time and I wanted a challenge,” says Ian. Last Thursday the windmill was handed back to John, to be reinstated in the gardens of The Grape Escape. “Dad’s in Oakwoods rest home now and couldn’t take it with him, so I was only too happy to have it on display at the café,” says John. “He’s made a lot of things over the years but nothing as big as the windmill. It’s quite a special piece, this should keep it for the next generation. “He’ll come out to the café to have an official look at.” Now that he’s completed the restoration, Ian says he is looking forward to the challenge of constructing the same windmill from scratch, having been given Kees’s plans.

Simon Bloomberg Nelson police officers exchanged their handcuffs and stab-proof vests for running shoes and shorts as they took on the Waimea College touch team on Friday in a game aimed at strengthening relationships between the region’s police and youth. Although the Waimea College students were too good for the police team, winning by 7-1, the real winner on the day was community relations. Richmond constable Jamein Bristowe says they had already played against Nayland College and Waimea was second on the list as they aimed to strengthen relationships with all the region’s schools. “It’s all about breaking down the barriers between police and the community and letting people know we are just everyday people and like having fun,” Jamein says. “We want to get to all of the high schools if we can - we want to know the kids on our area. “We’ve got detectives, road police, community police and family violence staff in the team so there’s a real mix. The bosses are really supportive of it too which is great.” Waimea captain Demi Salton says the school enjoyed hosting the police team. “It’s good for the police to come out into the community and get to know everyone,” she says. College sports co-ordinator Daniel Hobbs says the “biggest value is that our students see the police out of uniform” to highlight the fact they are people as well as police officers. “Perhaps this game can help break down some of the misconceptions about the police and show that they are valued members of the community as well,” Daniel says. “Hopefully they enjoy it and hopefully it’s something we can do more of in different codes”.

WEDNESDAY 12 April 2017
Just a thought... Merrick Mitchell Lay Pastoral Leader, Richmond Catholic Church As I write this, the Christian Church is in Lent. Lent is part of the yearly Church cycle following the events of Jesus Christ’s life, and is the time before Easter. Lent is traditionally a time when we reflect upon the example of Jesus and acknowledge our need for God. Before Jesus started his public ministry of teaching and healing, he spent forty days in the wilderness. There is not a lot
to eat in the wilderness, and we re-enact this period of forty days through fasting, prayer and almsgiving – getting by with less, making an effort to pray more often and more deeply and by giving charitably. The basic purpose is to bring about a complete change in our thinking and a new way of seeing our lives in relation to God. We are reminded that we are hungry, uncomfortable, and lonely without God, and we come to contemplate deeply the meaning of Jesus’ life, suffering and death for each one of us.
It is a time to reflect what changes are called for in the way we live our lives as his disciples. Let’s not pretend that all this spiritual stuff is easy! Jesus goes to the heart of the matter – instructing his disciples “when you fast”, “and “when you pray”. And “be careful not to parade your good deeds”. Jesus calls us to a complete change of life, to an inner change within our hearts and attitudes, not merely outward observance – “Let your hearts be broken, not your garments torn”. In nine months’ we will observe
Christmas! It seems rather strange to be writing about a holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus, when we haven’t commemorated his death yet. But in the Church’s yearly cycle, the two are linked. We read in the Gospel of Luke that an angel appeared to Mary, Jesus’ mother, and informed her that she was to be the mother of the Messiah, or the Saviour. Just before Easter we follow Jesus through his trial and suffering and death. This is not just to make us feel miserable, but also to remind us that Jesus’ life and
death is our example and model that we try and follow always. This Lent, and indeed throughout the whole year, as we pray and reflect, let’s slow down; put space between things; quieten ourselves and go within our hearts, where God will find us. We don’t need to find God; God will always find us. And then we will celebrate Easter when Jesus overcame death itself. His resurrection has given us the promise of new life in closeness to God. Blessings during this time of autumnal quiet and reflection.

There’s a lot going on along Queen Street at the moment, with the final push to replace a fragile concrete water pipe dating back to the 1960s. We suggest you use the ring road, park and walk to Queen Street to avoid delays. Access into Queen Street from the Salisbury Road roundabout may be limited – use the ring road instead as much as possible.

A new WW1 memorial will be unveiled this weekend at Marsden Valley cemetery, recognising the sacrifices made by local soldiers during the Great War. The idea was hatched around two years ago after Nelson’s Mason Robinson, a sergeant in the Royal New Zealand Airforce, was present when Helen Clark unveiled a statue of a WW1 soldier in Sydney. “The next time I came back to Nelson and played a Last Post, I looked around and thought, our soldiers haven’t got much recognition for all the efforts that they’ve put in, I think we should do something along the lines of a war memorial,” says Mason. Since then he has led the project on behalf of the Nelson Returned Services Association. A statue was completed by Oamaru artist Don Patterson in June last year and depicts a WW1 soldier resting on arms reversed. “The position he’s taking is one of being absolutely buggered, the expression on his face depicts a hard day out in the field, it’s really one of genuine bewilderment at what’s just happened in battle,” says Mason. Nelson City Council contributed $20,000 towards the statue, while Lottery provided Nelson RSA with a grant of $30,000, however, when it came time to find a place for the statue to rest, Mason saw there was a lot of work left to do to create the war memorial. “I looked around and thought, you can’t put this statue in the current surrounds, so we had to bring them up to a respectful level that our soldiers deserve,” says Mason. The memorial will be unveiled on Saturday, April 15, exactly 100 years after prominent Nelsonian, John Herbert Cock was killed in action while serving in the Royal Flying Corp. “The biggest impact on me has been the amount of buy-in from the community and how much people have contributed, donated and supported it. It needs a lot of organising but it’s meant a lot of satisfaction in pulling it all together,” says Mason. Beginning at 11am, the Minister of Veterans Affairs, David Bennett, will unveil the statue and inspect a troop of local cadets and New Zealand Defence Force, there will be a fly over by the Royal New Zealand Air Force display team. The public are welcome to attend the unveiling, although people are asked be at the cemetery no later than 10:30am.

Running, rolling and strolling to Saxton
WEDNESDAY 12 April 2017

Simon Bloomberg Twenty-one Nelson Prep students ticked another one off the list as they scootered, ran, walked and, in Connor Matthews’ case, hobbled to the finish of the City2Saxton on Sunday. The students joined 251 other runners, strollers and rollers in the annual Sport Tasman event, starting at the Victory Community Centre and following the Railway Reserve and Tasman Great Taste Trail to the finish at Saxton Field. Although Prep’s scooter riders set the pace, finishing in just over 35 minutes, Connor produced the most impressive performance, completing the course on crutches. Teacher Dian Edmondson says Connor, who had injured his knee mountainbiking, was determined to complete the City2Saxton because it was part of the William Pike Challenge. Dian says the students have to complete a number of tasks and events for the challenge and Connor was determined not to pull out. “They have to make a commitment to finish all the challenges so it’s good to see Connor do it,” Dian says “The challenge is aimed at getting kids who don’t usually get into the outdoors to become more active.” City2Saxton organiser Jane Miles says the event attracted people of all ages and abilities. Four-year-old Robbie Freeman was one of the youngest competitors, biking the course alongside his dad Mark who ran.
Nelson Prep scooter riders and speed skater Xan Twissell, fourth from left, set the pace in Sunday’s City2Saxton fun run, walk and ride. The students completed the event as part of their William Pike Challenge. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Nelson netball will look to keep trending upwards in 2017. After several years of growth in all areas of the sport, Nelson Netball Centre manager Lindsay Filiata says she wants to strike the perfect balance between getting all ages from all walks of life into the game. “It’s important we keep finding ways to introduce and re-introduce the game to people of all ages.” The Future Ferns have been a big part of getting young children introduced to netball without the usual pres-

From Year 7 players up, there will be 162 teams competing on the netball courts at the Saxton netball facilities ,both indoors and out, this season. “That number is pretty steady with last year and this year it’s all about consolidating and finding new ways to keep people engaged. “We are fortunate that we have high exposure as one of New Zealand’s leading female sports, it’s just a case of maximizing that as best we can.” It is a bit of a disjointed start to the

Prices Pharmacy beat Stoke by 12 goals in the decider last year. School holiday skill sessions are also in the works with one to be held in the April holidays so junior players can brush up

Not only has it given the 15-to-17-yearolds a chance to improve their skills on the court but they were able to learn key mental skills as well as the value of nutrition. “The hope is that we can identify players who can make our age-group representative teams and give them a pathway.” Nelson also hosted its

Spreading the love of science Jessie Johnston The world of science is a fascinating one, which is probably why people flocked to Cawthron Institute’s open day on Sunday. Their last open day in 2015 attracted around 850 people and organisers estimate they managed the same, if not more this year. “This year Cawthron decided to open its doors to the public to show them the work we’re doing in the fresh water space,” says spokesperson Nicole Taber. “We have many very talented freshwater scientists and we thought it was important to share that science with the community, there’s been a lot of public interest in freshwater science, it’s very topical.” Held at the institute’s site on Halifax St East, the open day saw people ‘follow the river of fish’ to learn more about healthy freshwater and the science done at Cawthron. People were free to explore seven stands that featured information and hands on activities on areas including fresh-
water plankton, urban stormwater, water bugs, freshwater fish and their habitat, algae and river health. Cawthron scientists also gave presentations throughout the day on a wide range of topics. “[My son] Cameron has a keen interest in science and we saw that one of the first things was a speech on the energy content of freshwater invertebrates and we just thought that sounded really good, so we thought what a good opportunity to come and have a look,” says Lance Wakefield. “You don’t really hear too much about Cawthron out in the general public, so when they hold this sort of thing I think it gives people the opportunity to see what they actually do and the good that they can do for Nelson, it’s pretty important. They should do a lot more of them.” Entry into the open day was free, however if anyone wishes to support Cawthron Institute and the work they do, donations can be made to the Cawthron Foundation. Details are available on their website at Wakefield’s Lance Wakefield, left, and his son Cameron at the Cawthron Institute open day on Sunday. Photo: Jessie Johnston. www.cawthron.org.nz Riddle Time

Back to the future for Richmond goalie Jacob Page Sports Editor
sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Richmond Athletic goalkeeper Mark Papps says he will have to invest in a spa pool if his Nelson Bays Division One football feats are to continue. At 51-years-old Mark is turning back the clock. Once a national league goalkeeper for Nelson United, Mark
was playing in the outfield in Nelson fourth division football last year. A “tap on the shoulder from Richmond coaches Matt Campbell and Steve Clark” changed all that. “They asked me in the offseason what I was up to and the rest is history. “Playing fourth division was good for me... At my age, I won’t run on the streets but I will chase
a football.” He says playing in goal gave him a chance to show his sons Tom, 15 and William, 10, that he had the skills that many remember him for back in the day, “The boys have seen me run around in the lower grades but it’s nice to be playing division one football especially when they are keen on the game.” Richmond Athletic underlined their league credentials with a
4-2 win over defending champions Suburbs Seals at Saxton Fields. Mark says he’s enjoying playing with a young team, including some teenagers in the defensive line. “It’s important to keep talking and giving them encouragement and when you can see the improvement it’s really pleasing especially against Seals because we were lacking a bit of height
today. With two trainings a week at the moment, a spa pool might not be too far away.” Coach Matt says the team is building nicely with youth at both ends of the pitch and the return of Stirling Sports premiership striker Ben Harris not too far away, all set to make the team stronger. He says lessons have been learnt from last year when they started hot and limped home.

Nelson Heat earn bronze at baseball nationals Jacob Page The Nelson Heat have won a remarkable bronze medal at the Ripken Under-13 National Baseball tournament after a slurry of stunning results at the week long event at Rosedale Park. The team was only put together six months ago as Baseball got a foot-hold in nelson through former softball pitch Marty Grants and the allocations of Champion Green as a place for a baseball diamond. The Heat went undefeated in their three pool games, beating Howick-Pakuranga 17-3, Central City 20-6
and Counties 15-3. Nelson had four batters in the top 11 averages after pool play with Astin Knowles, Reegan Lawton, Nikau Pouaka-Grego and Matt Lowe proving super productive at the plate. Astin and Matt were also in the top 10 pitchers rankings, proving they were multi-skilled players. The team beat Bayside 18-3 in the quarter-final to set-up a semi-final showdown against Orewa which they lost 12-3. However, the Heat showed plenty of resilience to finish third thanks to a 7-0 win over Howick-Pakuranga.

New Giants import Kyle Adnam may have provided a spark with his arrival but a win for the franchise still seems a wee way off. Kyle answered an SOS from coach Alan McAughtry and has certainly added more hustle in his two matches with the club after the departure of American Joe Slocum. However, Sunday’s 81-63 loss to the Hawke’s Bay Hawks – a team which had lost its last 24 matches - proves that the winless Mike Pero Giants have a long way to go to avoid the wooden spoon. Dion Prewster hit a game high 25 points while Kyle added 11 points and five assists. After just arriving at the club, the 23-year-old believed he could add value and push himself beyond his limits. “The chance to be an import in a league like this, at this point of my career, is fantastic. “That game was there to be won, I had a couple of chances and we made a few defensive mistakes. “I’m not going to back down; I want the ball in my hands in the fourth quarter and in overtime, that’s what it’s all about, being a point guard.” Kyle has had stints in the Australian NBL and seems to be finding his feet with Mel-

The Lantern
Everyone needs a home People become homeless for all sorts of reasons. We shouldn’t try to characterise them, say those who are dedicated to dealing with this dire social problem. Some of us have never been without a roof over our heads; sadly others have had a transient lifestyle pretty much from childhood. Some leave flats in desperation to escape violence and a drugs culture, even if they haven’t got alternative accommodation arranged, says Edward Andrews who has been supervisor of Nelson’s Night Shelter for the past 23 years. Some of his clients come from prison and need to re-establish in society; they may just need time and space. But others want to avoid any need to work. “Many have no direction in their lives and little hope,” says Edward, who was awarded a QSM last year. “Sometimes the police ask us to take someone who has nowhere to go and hasn’t done anything bad enough to go into the cells.” The Night Shelter offers spiritual as well as physical support. Edward routinely asks the question: Are you happy with your life? Often the immediate answer is yes, they enjoy spending time on the riverbank, perhaps sharing a carton of beer. But later many admit they are not satisfied and are willing, sometimes keen, to discuss an alternative, less precarious lifestyle. “They realise that without a change they are going nowhere.” Edward says his own early experiences – he was a seaman for 16 years – were not all good. He needed to change and found a way that enables him to help others in need. “In a way I feel like a missionary in my own country. I know I can’t solve everyone’s problems but I’m prepared to listen and offer guidance.” The Shelter can take up to six men, although there have been as many as nine with extra mattresses on the floor. Clients pay a small daily fee, which includes a simple evening meal and toast for breakfast. One or two newcomers arrive most weeks, but often the faces are familiar. The most usual age is early
thirties. Many return when their circumstances change; one even came back after 20 years. Up to three days is a common length of stay but Edward has discretion to extend it. “It can be a chance for recuperation, and if I am able to help I do. He is encouraged occasionally by seeing dramatic improvements in someone’s life. “I’ve seen alcoholics transformed into decent citizens. “I tell them about what Jesus has done for the world and show them the reality of eternal life. Sometimes it works wonders.” Captain Kenneth Walker of Nelson Bays Salvation Army has noticed an increase lately in the number of homeless people around Nelson and says it is a definite problem here. “We believe accommodation is a basic building block in life. “We don’t try to explore the reasons for people being homeless. We work to alleviate the situation, offering support in various ways. We prefer a hand up to a handout.” He says some “inherit the sins of their parents.” They may have bad credit ratings, not always through their own fault, so if some accommodation does become available they are always at the bottom of the priority list. “We believe everyone deserves a second chance, a 10th chance, a 15th chance, whatever it takes.” There is never an easy fix. If someone is out on the streets something just has to be done to help them. He commends the Government for setting up a special needs fund for emergency housing but says it is often not enough and usually only for up to a week, a short-term solution. There are not a lot of rooms available around Nelson other than motels. “Some go to camping grounds at $15 a night.” Captain Walker says years ago the Salvation Army used to own buildings to provide cheap accommodation, but now it’s privately owned. He believes there could come a time “when we need to look at that policy again.”

A very special, unique black pearl pendant when I visited the Abel Tasman park/ Nelson region in March. Lost on March 19th, it may have dropped on to the main through road just outside Motueka or on a layby just after the winding hills section past Hira, near the Whangamoa. Trustpower Community Awards
Are you a rural-based club or do you have rural-based players? If so, the Tasman Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund can help meet your travel costs. Sport NZ Travel Fund reduces the barriers for young people (aged 5–19 years) taking part in local sports competition by offering grants to subsidise travel costs. The clubs must apply on behalf of players and the next closing date is 30 April 2017. Application forms and further information is online at www.tasman.govt.nz/council/grants-funding or phone Mike Tasman-Jones 03 543 8403 for further information.
Volunteers are at the heart of every community – dedicating hours of time and energy every year to making their community a better place to live. About 1000 voluntary groups from around New Zealand enter the Trustpower Community Awards each year. It’s a celebration of just how much volunteers mean to our country. No matter how big or small, if your group, club or society has volunteers, it has earned the right to be involved. Anyone can enter a group... groups can even enter themselves! Entries for the Nelson Tasman Trustpower Community Awards close on 28 April. Register online or visit your local Council for an entry form. www.trustpower.co.nz/communityawards
Use Good Wood for winter burning Look for the Good Wood tick when you stock up on winter firewood to be sure of dry firewood that will burn cleanly. Suppliers in the Good Wood scheme can be trusted to provide either: • Seasoned firewood, suitable for immediate use during the winter months, or • Green (unseasoned) firewood delivered far enough in advance, that if properly stored by the user, it will be ready to burn in winter. Remember, green wood will not burn efficiently, leaving you with a cold house and smoky fire. A Good Wood supplier will have a moisture meter to measure the moisture content of wood if you wish to confirm that wood being delivered is dry enough to use. Find a Good Wood supplier: Head to www.tasman.govt. nz/link/good-wood for a list of Good Wood suppliers.
Subsidised neutering for menacing dogs We’re working with the Nelson SPCA to deliver subsidised neutering and microchipping for menacing dogs. The subsidy is funded the Department of Internal Affairs. Eligible dogs will be neutered and microchipped at a nominated vet clinic for $25. Dog owners who wish to take advantage of this offer should contact the Nelson SPCA on (03) 5477171 to confirm whether your dog is eligible.
Local Governance Statement Our revised Local Governance Statement is now available online at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/lgs. The statement provides a suite of information about the structure of the Council, its functions, responsibilities and activities, decision-making processes, legal authority and policies. We review and update the statement within six months of each local body election.
Richmond watermain replacements Over the next seven months, new water pipes will be installed in D’arcy Street, Fauchelle Ave, Florence Street, Elizabeth Street and Herbert Street in Richmond. The existing pipes in these streets have reached an age where they are showing signs of deterioration and need to be replaced to avoid disruption to residents’ water supply. At the same time, we will replace ageing water meters on these streets. At times during the works, access to the footpath and some car parks will be affected. Please avoid the coned off areas and follow signage and instructions. Traffic will be restricted to one lane for short periods of time throughout construction. Your patience is appreciated.
Schedule of Charges We have reviewed our fees and charges for the 2017/2018 year. Go to www.tasman.govt/feedback to view the proposed Schedule of Charges. Submissions on the Schedule of Charges close on 18 April 2017.

Proposed speed limit change for Queen Street and Sundial Square, Richmond We are consulting on a reduced speed limit for Queen Street, Richmond - to 30km/hr. The current speed limit on Queen Street from Gladstone Road to Salisbury Road is 50km/hr. The proposed reduction in speed limit will also include Sundial Square (from Queen Street to McGlashen Avenue). There are several reasons for this proposed reduction in speed: • The new road profile is designed for a lower speed environment • The new road design has a narrower carriageway (reduced from approximately 9.5m to 6.0m) • The new footpaths will be wider and make the area more pedestrian friendly • There will be no raised speed humps (due to stormwater flow requirements) Everyone is welcome to provide feedback and comment on the proposed change during the next six weeks. To do this either complete the form online at www.tasman.govt.nz/ feedback or fill in a form at one of the Council Service Centres and leave there or send via email to robyn.scherer@tasman. govt.nz. The consultation period closes at 5.00 pm on Friday 19 May 2017. For further information, contact us on 03 543 8400.

Your early input to the Long Term Plan 2018 – 2028 In the next year, we will be developing our plans and budgets for the next ten years - the Long Term Plan (LTP) 2018–2028. This provides a great opportunity to consider whether we are heading in the right direction and how we can work with our communities better. We want to hear your views about: • What are the key issues the Council needs to address over the next 10 years and how should we do this? • Are there projects or improved services you would like us to consider in the future? • Should the focus remain on financial prudence in the form of low rates increases (<3%) and reduced debt levels? • Are there things we could do better, or more or less of in the future? Send us your feedback and ideas to tasman.govt.nz/feedback by 18 April 2017.
Easter Hours Council offices and libraries will be closed on Friday 14 and Monday 17 April for Easter. Resource Recovery Centres will be closed on Good Friday. You don’t need to pre-register your intention to speak – just take your turn when invited by the chairperson. These presentations don’t form part of the formal business of the meeting – a brief record will be kept of the matters raised. Any matters requiring further investigation may be referred to staff by the Chairperson.
