Smith says Greens ‘ill-informed’ Nelson MP Nick Smith has slammed the Green Party’s opposition to the Waimea Dam, saying their criticism is ill-informed and lacks credibility. The Greens announced their opposition to the proposed

$82.5million dam at the launch of their election campaign in Nelson on Sunday. Green Party candidate for Nelson, Matt Lawrey, and West Coast-Tasman’s Kate Fulton stated the dam would lead to harmful nitrates leaching into

aquifers on the Waimea Plains and also result in urban development across rural land. However, Nick says the Greens’ criticism is “ill-informed and shows they haven’t done any homework on the specifics of the

proposal and have just reverted to their anti-agriculture, anti-infrastructure rhetoric”. “The claim by Mr Lawrey that the dam will increase nitrates in the catchment is just plain wrong. He seems ignorant of the fact that ir-

rigated apples produce fewer nitrates than the existing dryland farming. “He also overlooks that the dam will enable substantial increases

It’s a very small world Jessie Johnston The Nelson Miniatures Club will be holding its seventh show this weekend, featuring a variety of creations and collections to make even the smallest person feel like a giant. With around 100 exhibitions expected on the day, in a range of scales, the show will also feature works for sale from local and visiting miniaturists. Jeff and Mary Saxton will be among those from the local club displaying their creations, including a miniature wedding banquet. The installation was created three years ago for the national convention, which was held in Nelson. The group was throwing around ideas when Mary suggested a traditional style wedding banquet and it was agreed on. Many within the club got involved in creating the piece, with Jeff making the round tables, Mary doing the silk work to create the elegant marquee

“Nelson Lakes is really nice. It’s probably my favourite area to go tramping.”

“The Hackett Track is one of my favourites because it’s by the river, there is some interesting geology and trees, and it’s so close.”

“We love the Brook Sanctuary – the concept and it’s just so beautiful up there. It’s definitely our top walk.”

Paul Wilkins has gone above and beyond, serving the Murchison community as a volunteer fire fighter for 33 years, but the time has come for him to put down the hose and pick up the fishing rod, he says. Paul started at the Murchison Volunteer Fire Brigade in 1983 and moved quickly up the ranks making third officer within a couple of years, then deputy chief, and has been chief fire officer for 12 years. “I wanted to do something to give back to the community”, says Paul. “I like to help people when they’re in trouble - that’s what you do in a small community”. And help he has. Being the first responder to most events, Paul has attended call-outs for tornadoes, floods, helicopter crashes, fires, motor vehicle accidents and more. “I remember at 1am getting the digger into Murchison creek and opening it up to stop the water from flooding the town”. Despite his love of the job it hasn’t been an easy role. “The hardest thing was every time I came to a motor vehicle accident with children”, he says. “They would devastate me and I couldn’t handle it, but I just had to. You’ve just got to get on with it and do it. In the earlier

My wife Sandra and kids have always supported me really well which has made my job a lot easier. “I also have to thank my employers for letting me go”, he says. “All of my employers have been amazing”. With about 55 call-outs each year, Paul says that it’s been more like a second job than a volunteer role. “The job never finished after the call”, he says. In addition to the increasing amount of paperwork, “next day I’d go around all the members and check on them”. But after 33 years and over

1,500 call-outs, Paul says that he was “getting dragged down by everything. My workload has doubled and my body felt that it had had enough”. Murchison Community Council chairman Simon Blakemore says that Paul leaves big shoes to fill. “He’s shown real dedication and courage”, says Simon. Paul is looking forward to a much-needed holiday and getting his trout fishing gear out again. However, his volunteer days are certainly not behind him. Paul has already put his hand up to help the local St John and civil defence. “There will always be something for me to do”, he says. But despite the ups and downs, Paul says “if I had my life again, I’d do it all again. I’ve really enjoyed it”.

Punching back against Parkinson’s Charles Anderson Journalist

charles@nelsonweekly. co.nz charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz

On an unusually cold Thursday morning, a support group of a different kind is getting gloved up while listening to a revolving playlist of Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash and Shania Twain. It’s not your typical boxing soundtrack. That’s because this twice-weekly group of men and women do not seem like your typical boxers. Every one of them has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease - a degenerative movement disorder which can cause deterioration of motor skills, balance, speech and sensory function. “Come on, guys,” says Victory Boxing’s Paul Hampton. “Keep working.” The group moves over to the heavy bags and begin punching. “This works,” says Bob Chase, who is originally from Hawaii. “Just imagine it’s Trump.” He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Parkinson’s about three years ago but has found the boxing a welcome addition to his week. “I loved it from the very first day,” he says. “Just the punching, it’s great exercise.”

Bob Chase hits the pads being held by Victory Boxing’s Paul Hampton. Photo: Charles Anderson. Which is why Paul started offering the classes at his Vanguard St gym about three months ago. A man came in off the street and wondered if Paul might teach his wife, who suffered from the disease. “I had already been reading up about it,” Paul says. “I found it re-

ally interesting.” He got in touch with a researcher at the University of Indianapolis, who had looked at the benefit of boxing for Parkinson’s sufferers, and put together a programme. “I tailored it to suit these guys’ needs,” Paul says. “The feedback is that it is really working for

them.” An organisation in the United States called "Rock Steady" has been offering a similar course for more than a decade. Now it has hundreds of affiliates around the world. Paul recruited his mum Annie, who is a registered nurse, to sit in

on the sessions to make sure it is safe. Even she can see the difference in the group. “They are stronger and they can tell if they haven’t been in a couple of weeks.” Bob Lynch, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 15-years-ago, says boxing does things other types of exercise do not. “It’s not so much to do with the legs. It’s using the top half and you have to think about numbers and timing. It’s quite different.” He says the group has become a type of support group. “It’s great camaraderie.” Parkinson’s New Zealand community educator Claire Fisher says exercise is great for sufferers as it stimulates dopamine, which helps with motor action. There are about 100 people in this area on the organisation's books and the hope is that more will get involved with the programme. “The gym is for everybody. It's a community place,” says Paul. “If people feel like we can help them, then we will.” And he is learning from the experience, too. “I love it, the guys are great. I learned a lot more about country music, too. "But their taste for Shania Twain is a bit weird."

Bribery, corruption and talent seals win Rutherford House’s fairy-tale performance was a big hit at Waimea College’s House Songs on Friday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The Waimea College House Songs are not just about students having fun, associate principal Graeme Smith says, they are a big contributor to the school’s unity. Waimea’s students dressed up in red, yellow, green and blue costumes for last Friday’s House Songs and proceeded to sing, dance, chant and bribe their way into the hearts of the judges. It was a tight contest, but in the finish judges, principal Scott Haines and former pupils Alex Bradley, Jessie Watts and Nicola Hone, awarded first place to Cooper House’s pirate-themed act ahead of Rutherford’s fairy-tale medley. “The performances are getting better and better every year,” Graeme says. “When they started they were just a song, and now they are a miniproduction. “They have a story and a theme and everyone wears a costume. I think the $2 shops do very well out of it.” Graeme says the quality of the bribes has also improved as students try desperately to influence the judges. Rutherford delivered an impressive-looking Shrek Castle cake layered in green icing to the judges before their fairy-tale performance, while Cooper ensured Scott saw red, bribing him with Jaffas during the week. However, Graeme played down the influence of bribery on the judges, saying “it’s only a very small part of the scoring”. He says one of the biggest parts of the judging is house unity and “that’s driven by the house captains.” Graeme also says the real winner in the house songs is always “the school spirit’ that is generated when students of all ages work together to achieve a common goal. “They are a lot of fun and do so much to help build school spirit. The House Songs have become a big part of this school.”

Simon Bloomberg Jimmy Lee Creek and the Tasman Great Taste Trail were added to the growing list of Toyota Kiwi Guardian adventure sites aimed at encouraging young children to get off the couch and start exploring the natural environment. Toyota Kiwi Guardians is an outdoor activity programme run by the Department of Conservation in partnership with Toyota New Zealand and already has 60 sites around the country. Last Friday, Nelson celebrated its first Guardian sites when primary children and representatives from DOC, Toyota, Keep Richmond Beautiful and Richmond Native Bird Recovery

explored Jimmy Lee Creek in Richmond. DOC Community Ranger Sally Leggett says children and their families can visit the new sites and, using the Kiwi Guardians activity maps, enjoy a range of activities. They can also find the new Guardian posts at each site and record the unique code and enter it online to receive an Adventure Medal. “They can spot birds feeding in the Waimea Inlet, learn about the hardy godwit, ride over an awesome suspension bridge on the cycle trail; check for weta in a weta hotel, search for ancient rocks with fossilised shells in them and look for birds up close in a bird hide at Jimmy Lee Creek,”

Sally says. The new site on the Tasman Great Taste Trail can be accessed from Sandeman Reserve at Sandeman Rd off Lower Queen St, while Jimmy Lee Creek starts on Hill St just south of Queen St in Richmond. David Eagle from Bowater Toyota says they are happy to be part of a programme that is “enabling and motivating kids to get back into nature”. Toyota has teamed up with DOC, the Tasman District Council and the Tasman Cycle Trail Trust to establish the two sites in Nelson. The Toyota Kiwi Guardians explorer maps can be downloaded from www.kiwiguardians.co.nz

Jenna engineers successful job Judene Edgar Reporter

judene@waimeaweekly.co.nz

An unconventional childhood riding around in rubbish trucks that inspired an equally unconventional career, has led to national recognition for engineer Jenna Neame, for outstanding young leaders involved in infrastructure management. Jenna, who is currently an engineer at Tasman District Council, won the prestigious award at the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia’s annual conference in Dunedin last month. To win, you must be recognised by your peers as making an outstanding contribution to the community and engineering, as well as being articulate and wellrounded. But it’s all in a days’ work for Jenna who says, “I’m just doing what I enjoy”. While still at high school in Motueka, a friend of hers was working as a fitter and turner and she thought the job sounded really interesting, but told her friend that “it’s a shame I can’t do that kind of thing. But he said, ‘why not’ – so I did”. She started off doing a six-month

Jenna Neame is working in a man’s world in the council engineering service department. fitter and turner course at NMIT, but when the opportunity for an engineering cadetship came up at MWH, with encouragement from

her Mum, she decided to “give it a try”. She has since gone on to complete a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Highways), NZ

Diploma in Civil Engineering, and a National Diploma in Infrastructure Asset Management. Despite working in a field that

is still under-represented by women – only 16 per cent of engineers are women – Jenna says “I’ve never felt uncomfortable or out of place. I’ve always felt really supported”. The prize enables Jenna to attend the Institute of Management’s Accelerate Programme, which focuses on leadership development, collaborative working approaches, and enhancing business performance. “I really enjoy learning. I finish one [course] and then I’m always on the lookout for what’s next”, Jenna says. Jenna joined the council four years ago and says that, “it’s been the most challenging and most rewarding step in my career. I like that we can work together as a team and implement ideas that make life easier for people”. Engineering Services manager Richard Kirby says that he was delighted that Jenna won the award and that it was well deserved. “She beat some stiff competition”, he says. “It reflects all of the hard work that Jenna has put in previously at MWH and more recently at council”. Jenna is looking forward to attending the programme and integrating what she learns into her role at council.

Brightwater gala a fun fund-raising day Jessie Johnston Despite a postponement due to wet weather, last Sunday saw Brightwater School host a very successful Mid-winter Gala and Silent Auction. “Having a winter gala is great as there’s nothing else on at this time of the year,” says gala committee member Chantelle Gibson. “We’re thinking we raised around $35,000, which is very good for a winter gala. Because last year was such a great event, a lot of people came back again on Sunday.” The gala received a lot of generous sponsorship and prizes from local businesses and as well as parental help, Chantelle says the students were also heavily involved in making the event a success. “Our big-

gest thing this year was our garden art, that was our focus for the children, however they were more involved this year than ever, they were really into it. They made all the garden art, they pre-sold it to their parents, they were involved in making candy floss, they were on the stalls themselves and there were even kids wanting to make their own things at home and bring them in to sell at the gala.” The money raised from this year’s and last year’s galas will be going towards the revamp of the junior student’s playground. Chantelle says the school is grateful to all parents, students, teachers and members of the community who supported the gala. All left-over items from the event will be donated to local charities.

Opinion

Lindsay McKenzie Tasman District Council chief executive The flier about the proposed Waimea Water Augmentation Scheme and the Waimea Community Dam that is being distributed to Richmond and some Nelson residents deeply disturbs me. It purports to present information as fact when it is not. Constructive discussion and debate about issues that communities face is critical in our democracy. The Tasman District Council has many such conversations with the communities we serve, as well as within the organisation. Usually these conversations are supported by good research, facts and lead to good outcomes for everyone. Sometimes people are honest enough to say, ‘I see the logic but I still don’t agree’. Sometimes the council needs to change its position. If there was not so much at stake for the community, I might have been inclined to let the flier go – but there is, and I cannot. The distribution of this flier with its misleading information on such an important matter at a time urban residents and businesses need the facts, is irresponsible. There are many things about the flier that could be challenged but I want to focus on one. The flier states that ‘the latest set of rules regarding river flow is the same as the previous set of rules.’ No, they are not. The recent suite of changes to the Tasman Resource Management Plan introduced a minimum flow of 800 litres per second in the Waimea River, where none existed before. It’s well established that to maintain that flow all water users and uses will be cut back. That includes you and me in our Richmond homes. Unless the proposed dam is built, or some costeffective alternative is found, the growth, development and quality of life we enjoy will be compromised through a lack of water in summer. If you live in Richmond, Brightwater, Mapua, Redwood Valley or parts of Nelson (that’s 20,000 or so of us), we will have to cut our water usage by between 25 and 50 per cent nearly every summer (Stage 3 rationing will be needed in nine out of 10 summers). There is one statement in the flier that is spot on, ‘the only purpose served by the dam is to lift the flow rate of the Wairoa (River) above what it would have otherwise been.’ That is exactly right. What isn’t said is that “and it is the lifted flow rate that produces all of the benefits for households, businesses, the natural environment, recreational users and so on, that we are so keen to deliver for you”. While we might debate the alternatives, there is no do-nothing option here. It is not about irrigators, householders, the environment or businesses. It’s everyone’s future that’s at stake.

Hill St at 100kmh A 20-year-old Richmond man, who was allegedly driving at over 100kmh on Hill St on Friday night, has been charged with dangerous driving and driving with excess breath alcohol. The man was allegedly driving with more than two and half times the legal limit for alcohol. Senior Sergeant Blair Hall says, “It was an accident waiting to happen and it’s fortunate we had patrol in the area that stopped the man.” Investigation concludes fire tragedy The tragic death of 64-yearold Brian Lewis Halvorsen, who died in a caravan fire at Club Waimea in 2015, was caused by a loose connection within a multi-box inside the caravan. Coroner David Robinson confirmed that Brian died from “inhalation of smoke and fumes, and direct effects of fire, resulting from caravan fire”. Brian, who suffered from an impaired lung condition, was “significantly intoxicated at the time of his death which would have limited his ability to understand the peril he was in, or able to extract himself from the caravan”.

Young fruit growers put to test Appleby’s Ralph Bastian pipped the opposition in a close contest in the annual Nelson’s Young Fruit Grower competition at Hoddy’s Orchard on Friday. The day-long competition saw six competitors engage in a series of practical challenges designed to test the skills needed to successfully run a horticulture business. Ralph, 29, who works for Wai West Horticulture in their pipfruit sector as an orchard-block supervisor, received top marks for many of the competition’s activities including first aid, irrigation, orchard analysis and soils, as well as being named

On Saturday, after a lunch at HQ Café, the former players and their partners made their way to Wanderers club rooms to watch Wanderers Senior A take on Nelson Senior A, before the All Blacks versus the Lions. “90 per cent of us still live here in Nelson and we’ve got our families here too, so we’re now watching our grandchildren play for Wanderers, Waimea Old Boys or Rangers,” says Bruce. “We all still love our rugby.”

We scored 392 points for and 65 against and in those days, it was only three points for a try. We used leather balls, leather boots with nailed sprigs and there were no mouth guards back then.” Despite the lack of protective gear, the team survived with 19 players, nine of them later selected for the country rep team and seven selected for the Nelson rep side. “We were very fit, well coached and we were all great friends, with a very good team spirit,” says Bruce. “We were all playing very good rugby but the game has changed so much today. Waimea College creating future leaders

It’s been just over 60 years since the Waimea College interim committee sat down to discuss the ins and outs of establishing a new school. From location, class rooms and enrolments, to uniforms, transport, teaching staff and, of course, the name that would bring it all together. All of those decisions led to the creation of a very “good” school indeed. It very easily could have been Rutherford College or Richmond High School celebrating 60 years, as these names were among those considered for the new school, as well as a possible location in Stoke. As early as 1950 it was clear that a new school would be needed in the 1960s, and that it would need to be somewhere between Wakatu and Richmond. Five possible sites were considered, but the favoured property was too expensive. It took four years to settle on a site, a 55-acre property that was acquired for 35,000 pounds,

60 Year sarY anniver set for the college, transport was organised to get children to school, and finally, given the number of enrolments expected, the department had to determine the school’s staffing numbers. Of the 50 applicants for teaching positions, seven were interviewed for the position of principal, which was awarded to Dr. F E Gallas. Originally 150 pupils had been expected to start at Waimea College, but almost 200 had enrolled by February, to be taught by nine full-time staff as well as part-time staff for music and home science. While those who had previously

Being the new kid on the block also meant standing up to the reputations held by the long-standing Nelson schools. “One of the things I remember that first year was being told by Dr. Gallas that we would be compared with the Nelson colleges and that we had better keep our socks up and behave ourselves,” says Bruce Ward. “The boys all had to wear caps and we were told to doff our cap whenever we met any adult we knew in the street.” “The last year we were there, we didn’t have a pool but we had a lifesaving team. At the time, there was a team for Nelson boys, Nelson girls and us and the Nelson boys

had had the trophy for a number of years. They really didn’t expect us to do anything and we won. It was a bit of a shock to them, they’d left the cup back at the school,” recalls Angela. Foundation pupils also remember the strict rules around uniform, picking up stones from the school field, finding cider down the back of the property that had been a hobby of the previous land owner, and the high standard of teaching they experienced. Sixty years on and the school has changed in many ways. As well as house leaders and captains for sport, academia, and performing and visual arts, the student body is led by four head students. “The school always pro-

motes leadership. From year nine and going through the school, we’ve always looked up to leaders because they’re always been on stage at assembly and leading school activities, so that’s inspired me,” says 2017 head student, Tayla Macbeth. “After seeing the positive culture that we have here, we want to carry that on and keep Waimea as good as it has been over the past 60 years,” says 2017 head student Caleb Fraser. “I think it’s that whole pride thing, we can recognise how lucky we are to go to a school like this.” As of this year, Waimea College reached 1600 students for the first time, although as students leave to start jobs and apprenticeships

From a staff of eleven back in 1957, the school’s current teaching staff has also grown significantly, now numbering 170, including support staff. Leading the school is principal Scott Haines, who was once a pupil at Waimea College himself. “Waimea College has been a big part of my life actually. I met my wife Kelly here, my siblings went to Waimea College, my mum and dad went to the school, and my wife’s

sister is a Waimea College old girl - so it’s a strong part of who I am,” says Scott. As well as a passion for teaching, Scott says it was this history with the school that drove him to apply for the position of principal. “There’s not a secondary school in New Zealand, or anywhere in the world, that I’d rather be at than Waimea College because this is my home, it’s coming full circle. I’m a product of this place and I want to give something back.” While much has changed at

the school since 1957, including a modern curriculum, modern teaching and learning strategies, and a modern environment, Scott believes the culture of care and community is certainly as strong as it’s ever been. Waimea College also has a number of goals that will see it further succeed in the future, including the constant development of its curriculum and a determination to always improve teaching standards and students NCEA achievements.

“We had a meeting a couple of weeks ago and agreed our attack has been pretty good but our defence has only been a six out of 10. We’ve missed too many tackles and I think that’s been a mental thing – we’ve needed to be more aggressive. “It’s also been a massive step up for our young guys. They were playing under-15 and under-16 rugby last season, so it’s taken a while for them to get used to the intensity and structure at this level.” Grant says they are now aiming for the top eight “with a bestcase scenario is finishing fifth”. The team is presently seventh after 10 rounds although they are just one point behind sixthplaced Rangiora.

Waimea College Combined coaches and players have given themselves a pass mark in the first part of the UC rugby championship and now they are aiming to maintain that high standard as they head towards the play-offs. Waimea recorded their sixth win from 10 games in the Crusaders region secondary schools’ champs after thumping winless Roncalli Combined at Waimea College on Saturday. All the teams have a bye this weekend before resuming on July 22 when Waimea plays Christ’s College in what cocoach Glen Grant says will be a crucial match for his team.

“We had a good win on Saturday, although we expected to do that. I was pleased with the defence – it was good not to let them cross our line.” “But we need to try and beat Christ’s at home because we have a tough run into the playoffs. We play Timaru and St Bede’s away and then finish with Mid Canterbury Combined, so it won’t be easy.” However, Grant says the team are “pretty happy with the way we’ve been going” after making a slow start to the season. He says the players have gained the self-belief needed to compete against the top teams in the competition, and if they continue to improve, “anything can happen.”

As the only orthodontist in the top of the south, Nelson Orthodontics is a busy surgery, caring for patients from Blenheim, Nelson, Golden Bay, Murchison and the upper South Island generally. They can have up to 70 patients through the doors on any one day, which is why the team is proud to showcase their remodelled surgery on Waimea Road. The redesign has allowed for more surgery space, better patient flow and the incorporation of a range of high-end orthodontic technology. As soon as patients walk in they will notice a brighter, more spacious, waiting room, as well as an improved administration space and a separate office for the surgery’s general

manager. Nelson Orthodontics has made the decision to rely less on paper and store more information electronically, as well as reduce the size of their laboratory, allowing for two more surgery stations and the inclusion of two new orthodontic scanners. “It’s made a more comfortable interior for Nelson Orthodontics’ clients, it’s provided a rationalised layout for staff and a more comfortable environment for them to work in, and it’s also provided an illusion of space within the existing building through the use of materials and colours,” says Justin Fletcher from Redbox Architects, who project-managed much of the work. “Certainly, the brief of having to remodel

within the existing footprint and to achieve those additional spaces was challenging, but enjoyable. The other factor of the project was, we had to carry out the renovations and alterations within a very tight time frame, so coordinating the project to achieve that was challenging, but Kennedy Construction did a fantastic job to complete the majority of the project within the surgery’s Christmas shutdown period.” Technological advances in orthodontic treatment allow for greater precision, improving the end result and reducing treatment times. Nelson Orthodontics have invested heavily in this available technology and part of the upgrade brief was to provide space for the

health, and through the ‘Wish for a Smile’ scheme we support kids with severe cases whose families can’t afford treatment to get access to what they need.” With a long history of orthodontic care in the Nelson region, the latest technology and professional, friendly, qualified staff, contact Nelson Orthodontics on 546 6981 when you are ready to schedule an appointment to begin your orthodontic treatment.

Nelson Orthodontics is one of a very few orthodontic practices in New Zealand to integrate this technology into their surgery. The CBCT machine provides a 3D image of the mouth and jaws, offering far more detailed images than what can be achieved with an x-ray. As a result, Nelson Orthodontics is welcoming a number of other dental practices and specialists within the region into their surgery to use the technology for their own patients. The Intra Oral scanner is linked through the internet to a company called Suresmile, so, after a scan is taken, it is sent electronically to the USA to be produced. 3D imaging, treatment planning software and robots are used to create the wires, before they are couriered back to Nelson Orthodontics. Previously the wires would have

been fitted by hand by Nelson Orthodontics, however this new technique can decrease the time required to complete the treatment and increase the precision of the results. Another advancement in technology offered by Nelson Orthodontics is Invisalign treatment where teeth are moved by clear aligners, like a thin mouth guard. The aligners are both as close to invisible as it is possible to get and can be taken out for cleaning and eating and are a great option in many situations, especially adults considering orthodontic treatment. Conveniently located between Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls on Waimea Road, Nelson Orthodontics has been situated here since 1991. This was the first major refurbishment of the surgery and represents a significant investment for Andrew Lush and Andrew Marriott. Orthodontics literally means ‘straight teeth’, but as Andrew

Lush explains, misaligned teeth and an uneven bite can cause their owners issues beyond appearance. They increase the risk of dental cavities, excessive/uneven wear and assorted gum and mouth problems, which can sometimes be painful. “Teeth are meant to last a lifetime and our role is to help develop strong, healthy, straight teeth that will do their job for as long as possible,” says Dr Lush. “Equally if not more importantly, we see patients gain the confidence to smile and feel better about themselves generally. It’s really rewarding to see the results and how it improves people’s confidence, especially the day that the braces come off and they show off their new smile.” Drs Lush and Marriott work closely with community dental clinics, private dentists and dental specialists around the region in regard to patient treatment. World Cup dream for Claudia

Simon Bloomberg

Claudia Green has taken another big step in her cricketing career and now there are just two steps to go before she reaches her ultimate goal. The former Waimea College and Wakatu cricketer has just been named in the New Zealand women’s open indoor team to play in the World Cup in Dubai in September. Although Claudia is excited about the prospect of playing indoor cricket for New Zealand, she remains focused on her goal of representing her country in the traditional form of the game. “I’ve been in the Central Dis-

tricts Under-21 team for the last four years and now I’ve made the New Zealand indoor team which is really exciting,” she says. “But I need to keep improving because I’d love to make the women’s CD team and then play for New Zealand – that’s my dream.” A right-arm swing bowler and mid to lower order batter, Claudia concedes she was surprised to be named in the team for the World Cup. The Canterbury team she was playing for didn’t perform well at nationals but Claudia thinks it was her all-round game that caught the eye of the selectors.

“It was a shock when they read my name out. “We didn’t do very well but I think my bowling and my fielding got me selected – my batting was okay.” Claudia, who is studying physical education and psychology at Otago University, started playing cricket for Jon Linyard’s Waimea Intermediate girls team. She continued playing for the Waimea College girls team before switching to the Wakatu men’s second grade team and then the Taieri men’s second grade team when she moved to Dunedin. “I had to start playing in the men’s teams to get a reasonable

standard of cricket. “There weren’t any good women’s teams in Nelson and there’s none in Dunedin, so a lot of the girls play for men’s teams.” Claudia started playing indoor cricket at Action Indoor Sports in Richmond when she was 14 and says she enjoys the speed and intensity of the game. It also ensures she can keep her cricketing skills finely tuned during the winter months.

“I’ve always enjoyed it. You have to be good at making quick decisions because of the speed and intensity of the game – it’s a bit like a faster version of T20.” Although Claudia has worked hard at her game, she says she has been fortunate to receive excellent coaching from Jon, and her uncles Matt and Aaron McCauley and Warren Brown. She has also had plenty of support from her parents Mike and Rachael.

Titles in both hemispheres Hedges stars Andrew Board Journalist

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz

At the start of the season, Jesse Walker had a rugby league championship on his mind – it just happened to be in London, not Nelson. Jesse spent two years in the UK playing for the West Warriors rugby league side. There he won a championship in 2016 and his team qualified for the prestigious Challenge Cup competition, where the Warriors reached the third round, the furthest any Londonbased amateur team has made it in the competition. But an expired visa found the 24-yearold builder leaving his team-mates and heading back home to Nelson. “I wasn’t even thinking of playing when I got back because it was half way through the season and the teams I played for before I left [the Ta-

hunanui Tigers and Stoke Cobras] had folded.” A couple of phone calls from the Richmond Rabbits tempted him back onto the pitch and on Saturday he picked up another piece of silverware, although his first in Nelson, as the Rabbits ran up 44-30 winners over the Wanderers Wolves in Saturday’s grand final at the newly-minted Champion Field, at the Saxton Field complex. “It’s awesome. The way these guys have welcomed me into the team, I’ve loved it.” Jesse was one part of the halves combination with Hayden Smith that kept the Rabbits on the front foot early in each half, with the Wolves dominating the latter periods and almost pulling off a stunning comeback with some handling errors in the final 10 metres letting them down on several occasions. Jesse says it was a tough match but he

was thrilled to finally win his first Tasman Rugby League winners medal. “It’s bloody great coming back for something like this. The way we came out firing was great for the boys and then the momentum switched and they got back into it, fair play to them, but I’m proud of the boys - how we were able to grind it out in that last 20 [minutes].” He says it’s been a surreal 12 months winning a title in two countries, something he’s still struggling to believe. “If someone had told me at the start of the year that I’d be winning a title with the Rabbits, I wouldn’t have believed them. The footy career has certainly been boosted up a bit in the last couple of years.” Jesse says he isn’t sure what’s next for him. “I’m just going to enjoy tonight with the boys and see what happens next.”

with four tries Andrew Board Richmond Rabbits' centre Sam Hedges scored four of his side's five tries in its 44-30 win over the Wanderers Wolves in the Tasman Rugby League grand final at Champion Field on Saturday. Sam, a local star with the Rabbits and Tasman Titans, said after the game that it was the best of his four titles. "This is the best because in the past years we've had a strong team and plenty of depth so we were sort of expected to win. But this year we only had four players at the start of the year. “We didn't know if we'd have a team. So to pull it together and win today is the most rewarding, because I thought this was mission impossible at the start of the year."

Big challenge for Waimea Old Boys Simon Bloomberg

“It will be a very physical encounter,” Mark says. “It’s probably going to be close too, so it’s going to be important for us to make our tackles.

Waimea Old Boys are preparing for a bruising battle against neighbours Taylors Wanderers in their Car Company Nelson division one semi-final at Brightwater on Saturday. Waimea had already secured third spot in the play-offs before beating Stoke 40-38 on Saturday, but had to wait for Nelson to edge out Wanderers 36-33 to find out who they’d meet in the semi-final. Mark Milne says those score-lines show there’s nothing between the top teams and he’s predicting another close contest on Saturday.

“It

will be a very physical encounter Coach Mark Milne

“Both sides have got very good attacking players so it will be the team that has the best defence that wins. Semi-finals footy is

always about defence and we’ll be focusing on that.” Although Waimea conceded six tries in their win against Stoke, Mark says he’s not too concerned. “We probably didn’t get that bit right but we rested a few guys and took a couple of guys off early, so that had an impact. We’ve had some injuries so it was more important to get those players right for the semi rather than put our top line-up out against Stoke.” Mark believes Wanderers will go into the game as favourites after “thumping us” 54-7 the last time the two teams played. The

home ground advantage will also help Wanderers, which has an impressive record at Brightwater. “They are the defending champs as well, so they will be favourites. They played well last time but we didn’t make our tackles and that’s not going to happen on Saturday.” However, Mark says they will have to negate the attacking power of a Wanderers backline that includes national sevens star Trael Joass.

“They have some big game players and they will come at us hard, but we have the players to match them. It’s going to be rugged.” The game kicks off at Brightwater Domain at 3pm. Waimea Old Boys senior B’s season is over after they lost their final game of the season 18-12 to Wanderers at Jubilee Park. Waimea finished fifth and missed a place in the play-offs.

Tasman Boys u15 Tasman Basketball Under-15 boys coach Ed Book says the team will be aiming for a top eight finish next week at the national tournament in Dunedin.

Ed says, with more than half the squad new to age-group basketball, the main focus has been self-belief. They have played a seeding tournament, where they met competition

heavyweights Canterbury, which was a learning curve. “Canterbury are traditionally strong and the first time we played them it was a real eye-opener to the level of

25

Representative Team

intensity, the level of defensive and everything else that you have to play with.” Ed says that when they met a second time, Tasman was far more competitive. “We made some adjustments and we were competitive with them for three quarters but ran out of energy. We have five or six guys who are new to

representative basketball this year so it’s a learning process. Everyone is improving and they are listening to the crash course of advice that I’m trying to give to them.” Confidence and self belief will be the most important things for us because we don’t have the size of other teams.”

The Lantern

Is early intervention priceless? I had been thinking about the cost to us all of having to wait for help when a friend told me this story. She was waiting for a bus in Wellington recently when a guy asked her which bus went to Kilbernie. She told him to catch the number 24, and it would be coming soon. Then her bus came and she got on. As it left she heard him ask someone else which bus would go to Kilbernie. It took a while for her to think this through, and she said, “He might not have been able to see, but I think he could have told me that, so I guess he couldn’t read!”

able to provide for his children, or help with their homework, made him feel worthless. After years of struggle he gave up. His family and children were devastated. They felt to blame. Can we as a community imagine better outcome from early intervention? How much would you be willing to pay for better health and education? — Shiona Frengley, church member

As a country we rank fifth for teaching our children to read; but all is not well when 90% of those in our prisons struggle to read and write. How come those prisoners didn’t learn to read? What must it be like not to be able to read? We can’t really understand what not being able to read is like, but I imagine would be like finding yourself in China, you wouldn’t be able to read any of the signs, find a toilet, buy food and drink and if you got lost how could you ask for help? A recent UK study estimated the cost of failing to provide the best possible help for children who are not achieving at school is over NZ$500 per year for every person in the UK. If we give our children the best possible start in life; with world leading educational support for the child, teachers, family and whanau; and the best possible housing; and an adequate income, we can change our country for the better. However the dilemma is that the cost is high, because we still have to respond to those who have missed out while investing in early intervention. Caring for our children along with the families and whanau who raise them is good for our communities and country as a whole.
