Widely regarded as Nelson’s biggest event to date, retailers and locals alike are hoping it’ll pave the way for further major events, with the community having proved their capability of pulling something of this magnitude off.

With a number of organisations and groups vital to the planning and execution of the event, acting senior sergeant of Tasman Police Mike Wardle says communication between those involved played an integral role. “The real key was how well everyone communicated. We were all working towards the same goal, the whole thing was really well planned. We’ve shown we can do it and it just couldn’t have gone

any better,” says Mike. Pubs in Richmond say they experienced their usual steady flow of customers with no noticeable increase, put down to the likelihood of rugby revellers staying on in Nelson. Richmond Mall’s centre manager Belinda de Clercq says they had a 10% increase in foot traffic on Sunday with visitors to the mall, particularly for the food court, and over the entire weekend had 32,000 visit the mall. “Nelson was

buzzing with people. The bus stops looked like ant’s nests with people dressed in supporters’ gear, it was amazing how many people took advantage of the free bus service. It’s definitely been a huge success for the region,” says Belinda. At the post-match press conference, All Blacks coach Steve Hansen heaped praise on Nelson even stating that Trafalgar Park was “one of the better pitches we’ve played on”.

“It’s been a pleasure to be here, we’ve really enjoyed it. The weather’s tremendous. The community’s been fantastic, everywhere we’ve gone we’ve been well received,” says Steve. With the entire region buzzing from All Black fever, hats off to the Nelson City Council and Tasman Rugby Union for getting stuck in and putting us firmly on the map as a region with the ability to host major events.

The Tasman District Council voted 9-5 to revoke an in-principle decision it made on Tuesday, August 28, not to continue with the dam. Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne says the decision was overturned after new information was presented to councillors that showed the cost to ratepayers of a $23 million increase in the overall project price would be minimised. The information also showed the risk of the council’s credit support for a loan to irrigators through the CouncilControlled Organisation had significantly reduced. “We’ve still got a lot of work to do to reach financial close and the final decision point for the dam,” Richard says. “However, today’s decision means we keep the ability to draw on $73 million in external funding for a project that will give us 100year water security and protect the health of our precious water resource.” After the August 28 decision, the council’s dam joint venture partners, Waimea Irrigators Limited (WIL), working with investors and central gov-

Restricted river access frustrates whitebaiters Emily Beaumont Normally at this time of year you can find Dennis Puklowski whitebaiting on the Waimea River near Appleby, but this season he’s yet to set his net due to restricted access. “Dad always fished and whitebaited here. I started coming here with him in 1957 and have been here every year since,” says Dennis. This season the whitebait has been safe from his net as Dennis, hampered by “crook knees”, is unable to lug his gear the one kilometre to the water’s edge, since the Tasman District Council secured a steel gate across the access way. Last year the council opened the gate for the whitebait season but community relations manager Chris Choat says they’ll not be do-

ing that again. “The fencing and gate was provided to protect the riverbank from heavy vehicles and flytippers. When the gate was opened for the season the use as a four-wheel drive track resumed, endangering other users and the essential plantings, as did the flytipping,” says Chris. While Dennis says it was “hoons not whitebaiters” that drove over plantings last year, the council is remaining steadfast in their decision to keep the gate in place. “The area is becoming increasingly popular with residents and will only get more popular, hence the development as a sustainable community space, and ratepayers and residents should not be endangered nor pay for the collection of other people’s rubbish,” says Chris.

There’s nothing like seeing a child’s eyes light up as they unwrap presents on Christmas morning, but for many children around the world it’s a pleasure they’re often denied. That’s where the charity Operation Christmas Child (OCC) steps in as the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind, using gift-filled shoeboxes to send to children in poverty, to ensure they have the enjoyment of unwrapping a present on Christmas Day. “Most of these children have never received a gift

before and for some it’s life changing,” says local coordinator Lynda Rea. Last year, 1203 gift-filled shoeboxes through OCC were sent from our region to children in the South Pacific and South East Asia, they were combined with other shoeboxes from around New Zealand and Australia to make a total of 327,451 shoeboxes. Preprinted shoeboxes are available now from the Richmond Mall to be filled with simple gifts from six categories: something to love, something to wear, something for personal hygiene,

Once filled, the boxes need to be returned to the mall on or before Labour weekend, they’ll then be sent to Auckland in preparation to reach the children by Christmas. “It’s something simple that anyone can do. It’s amazing seeing videos of the kids when they open the boxes, it really melts my heart. I know we have issues here in New Zealand but this is a whole other level of poverty. It’s so nice to give to people less-fortunate than yourself,” says Lynda.

AA calls on Government An end in sight for town traffic to test drugged drivers congestion The AA is calling on the Government to urgently progress its own actions to get drugged drivers off our roads. Despite a Private Members Bill from MP Alastair Scott to introduce random roadside saliva testing for drugs seeming set to be voted down after its first reading in Parliament, the AA was heartened by the comments of Transport Minister Phil Twyford that the Government has work underway to produce its own measures

to reduce drugged driving. “The AA has been calling for action on drugged driving since 2011,” says AA Motoring Affairs general manager Mike Noon. Figures released to the AA from New Zealand’s official crash analysis system showed 79 of the drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2017 were subsequently found to have drugs in their system - with cannabis and P being the most common individual substances.

The roading projects on Lower Queen St are soon to be at an end, says communications advisor for Tasman District Council (TDC), Chris Choat. The works between Gladstone Rd and Headingly Lane were undertaken at the end of April to support growth in Richmond, by increasing the water supply and improving the ability to drain stormwater. With the majority of the as-

phalting already being completed, Chris says the rest of the road works will be finished by the end of next week. However, work on Bateup Rd will continue for the next six months. Due to the extensiveness of the job, Chris says March 2019 is the target date. “Basically, we are on time and within budget. In January the project will swap sides of the road until completion in

Local harness race at centre of scandal The harness-racing industry is currently embroiled in scandal and a Nelson harness race at Richmond Park is at the centre of fixing allegations. A police enquiry into the alleged fixing found one of the drivers manipulated the result of a race this year on Friday, June 8 in Richmond. Eleven people nationwide have so far been arrested and charged in relation to Operation Inca — a National Organised Crime Group investigation into alleged corruption in the harness racing industry. The 17-month investigation culminated in raids on 17 properties in Canterbury, Manawatu and Invercargill. A 26-year-old man appeared in court on charges of deception, four men — aged 34, 40, 41 and 44 — are due to appear in court on Wednesday, September 12, on match-fixing charges. A 41-year-old woman is due to appear the same day on two counts of supplying Class B drugs. A 47-year-old man has been charged with deception by match-fixing and is due to appear in court, also on September 12. Three men, aged 30, 42 and 49 appeared on multiple drug related charges. And a 71-year-old man was arrested on September 9 on a deception charge. Can-do attitude for food drive Kate Russell Over 1500 items of much-needed food are ready to go to St Vincent de Paul, thanks to a student-led food drive at Garin College. It’s taken just three weeks for the school to accumulate tins of

baked beans, spaghetti, creamed rice, fruit, tomatoes and soup for their annual food drive. Cereal, pasta, rice, noodles, muesli bars, tea and other nonperishable items are also included. Every student has been encouraged to bring in as many

items as possible, and they’ve had a mufti day, a jelly bean guessing competition and a movie night as incentives. Student John Paul Schryvers says they are looking forward to loading the food into the school van and dropping it off at St Vincent

de Paul in the next few weeks. “We can’t wait. The fact that it’s going to our community is cool,” he says. On top of that, students have also managed to raise another $1000 through bake sales and sausage sizzles. Half will go to St Vincent

de Paul and the other half to the Cancer Society. “We are just pretty happy we can make a difference for families with the basics that we so often take for granted,” says John Paul. “Give a little, help a lot - that’s what it’s all about.”

Annual scholarship Immigrant to speak accepting applications of her childhood

Since 2008, Richmond’s McGlashen’s Pharmacy has annually awarded a local student who clearly excels in their chosen field of sports, arts, music, academia or other interests with a $1000 scholarship to help the individual achieve their goals. Application forms are available from the pharmacy on Queen St. Applicants must live within the district and be aged 16 years or under as of 30/09/18. Pharmacist Andrew McGlashen says the scholarship provides a great platform for the pharmacy to give a lump sum to a young person who could benefit from it and it’s “a nice way to give something back to the community that supports the pharmacy. We sponsor quite a few things, but it is nice to be able to give a large amount of money which we know will go towards helping someone achieve great things.” Previous winners have gone on to represent New Zealand on the international stage in their chosen field and include sailors, multi-sport athletes, musicians, cyclists and dancers. Poet and author Panni Palasti grew up in Hungary before and during World War II. Her memories of this time grew into the book Budapest Girl: An Immigrant Confronts The Past. Spring Fling at Willow Bank village It was daffodils, apple trees and smiling faces at Willow Bank Heritage Village on Sunday, September 2. Located 1.5 km south of Wakefield, Willow Bank held its first open day of the season. They were celebrating Spring and Father’s Day. This living museum is open to the public on the first Sunday of the month, from September to May. Sunday’s open day was a special fund-raiser for the Nelson Branch of the New Zealand Tree Crops Association. Tree Crops, as the group is affectionately known to its members, is a group of fruit and nut growers, lifestyle block owners, gardeners, orchardists and local owners of tree nurseries, honey, nut and olive oil businesses. Sunday was a busy day for Katrina Richards, nothing new to the woman who wears a lot of hats. She set up this special open day and is a member of Tree Crops, a Willow Bank volunteer and helps run the Wakefield Apple Fair. On Sunday, Tree Crops was selling small apple trees called “rootstocks” and the buyer got to choose what kind of apple would be grafted onto it. There were more than 60 kinds of heritage apple varieties to choose from. The grafting wood, also called “scion wood”, was sourced from

The Scullery. Willow Bank volunteers Carol Leggett and Colleen Warren served cream teas, coffee, cake and sandwiches in the charming Victorian Café. A pop-up store was set up in the 1970s RSA building to sell locally grown citrus, nuts and herbs and a delicious vinegar made with

quinces. The Wakefield Apple Fair committee contributed tasty jams and chutneys. Stall holders Lois Carter and Kaye Bel-Cher set up in the Sample Room. This type of building used to be a feature in old-fashioned villages. It is an otherwise empty room with shelves where travelling merchants can display their wares. Lois is a regular visitor at Willow Bank open days. Her wares are a mix of vintage and retro items, including toys and old tools. Kaye of Moonlight Art took advantage of the improving weather in the afternoon to display some of her impressive artworks on the lawn. Kaye paints native birds on large rocks, which are cradled in a driftwood stand. A great day was had by all the visitors and volunteers. The next public open day at Willow Bank Heritage Village is Sunday, October 7. Challenge Grand Prix proves a hit Fun, Sport and Safety were the key aims when local Police and Speedway Stars joined 12 Youth with disabilities at Pro Karts in Tahunanui for a family fun race day on Sunday, July 29. Police officers came along in their free time to support the event, they are often called by members of the public that are unaware of some of the medical conditions can arise from time to time with some of the youth. The police are keen to work with the families to understand and support them when situations do happen and how best to deal with each individual, a real benefit for all involved. The Speedway Stars were only too happy to put up their hand, the Speedway is a favourite passion for many of the youths and to race against real drivers was a huge highlight for them. The Nelson Speedway Club has been strong supporters of youth in the community over the years. The format had the youth in blue colour shirts racing against each other while the police and speedway drivers were in red. They had three heats each with eight cars per race, there were a few warning flags and the odd crash, but after all the heats eight went through to the grand finale with sprint car

Fun With Flax at Richmond Library Yvonne Hammond is running two free, flax weaving workshops at Richmond Library as part of the library’s Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori (Maori Language Week) celebrations. Yvonne says, “Participants will learn tikanga (Maori customs) and kaitiakitanga (protection and guardianship) and the skills of raranga (weaving). I’ll also be bringing in a display of my woven creations, including my World of Wearable Art entry Kaitiakitanga.” Yvonne Hammond’s weaving workshops are being held at Richmond Library on Thursday, September 13. The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is a Rotary ‘New Generations’ service programme intended to develop leadership skills among young adults. Nelson Matters Nelson was as much the winner as our celebrated All Blacks when they beat the Los Pumas 46-24 last Saturday night at Trafalgar Park. We proved as a community that we are capable of hosting New Zealand’s national sport at the international level. The event was inspiring for Nelson rugby, fun for families and good for business. We projected Nelson onto the national and international stage with class and we boosted our pride and confidence in ourselves. The seeds of the success date back many years. We were bold

in putting our hand up to host games in Rugby World Cup 2011 and proved our capability. Our rugby credentials have grown with the remarkable rise of our Tasman Mako. We are indebted to the visionaries from Tasman Rugby, Nelson City Council and our Nelson Regional Development Agency who in February last year, backed by commercial sponsors, put the bid in to host this Argentina/All Blacks game. A vision can go awfully wrong without successful execution. Those responsible for preparing the grounds and stands should take a bow. The pre-game in-

volvement of the All Blacks in the community was inspirational. The fan trail embraced by so many businesses created a citywide festive spirit. A big thanks to the retailers for their shop displays, the 22,404 who dug deep and bought tickets and the 200 volunteer ushers who helped make it all happen. I enjoyed the game from the southern stand with my son and like so many families, loved the atmosphere. My favourite moment on field was when Mako Shannon Frizell scored, but the best overall was when Sky commentator Tony Johnson said it

To keep the All Blacks strong, the union must continue to nurture rugby in the regions. This event proved the worth of Trafalgar Park. We are so fortunate to have this large capacity sports facility right in the heart of our city. I remember the groans when we spent $8m of rate payers and tax payer funds to upgrade it for the Rugby World Cup with the west stand, new gates and toilet facilities. We need to finish the job and replace the tired and

outdated east stand. We also need to further capitalise on our unique heritage of the birthplace of the New Zealand rugby. We need to be preparing now for the 150th celebration in 2020 of that momentous game first played between Nelson College and Nelson Club at the Botanics on 14 May 1870. Rugby is on a roll in Nelson. The Hydraulink Nelson team have been proudly servicing the local area from their Brightwater branch for the past 14 years. The branch started life as Nelson Hose and Hydraulics, before being purchased by Hydraulink back in 2010. Aimex came on board as a

Hydraulink Distributor in 2011 with a strong background in the local marine industry. Last year a further two owner/ operators joined the team – JVS Ltd and AK 24/7 - both based out of the Brightwater branch. For the last 13 years, the branch was managed by

Jasmyn Hogarth, who had previously worked for Nelson Hose and Hydraulics. Jasmyn recently took an opportunity in Australia and is now working as the Operations Manager at Hydraulink Rocklea in Queensland. As such, Hydraulink Nelson are very pleased to announce the

addition to their team of new Branch Manager for Nelson - Richard Aitken. Richard comes to the business with a wealth of industry experience and knowledge and he is looking forward to meeting all of the local area Hydraulink customers.

Jon has been in the hose and fittings industry for many years, having worked in Perth, Australia, as well as here in Nelson. He has a wide range of skills - from tube work through to installations, as well as being highly experienced in all types of breakdowns. Jon has been with Hydraulink for the last three years.

Sean has been with Hydraulink for almost five years with his main focus being installation work. Sean’s time is currently being divided between hydraulic service work, quoting of installs and training our newest mobile operator to ensure a continued high-quality level of work.

Ethan is our newest Hose Technician. He joined us for two years ago and spent the first 18 months as the Branch Service Technician. During this time, he learned the product, met our customers and provided over-the-counter service, giving him a very wellrounded perspective of the business and our customers' needs. He is now out in the field in a mobile service truck providing a great breakdown service and starting to undertake install work.

Jordan is our Branch Service Technician and has been with us since November last year. He comes from a strong customer service background and is always available and keen to help our customers.

JVS Ltd Joel Scott has been working with hydraulics for 10 years throughout New Zealand. He has been an owner-operator with Hydraulink for one year and thoroughly enjoys the many and varied challenges he faces on a daily basis. One of the most significant projects Joel has been involved in was the hydraulics installation for the 2011 Rugby World Cup prize-giving trailer - the one that raised and lowered into the shape of a rugby ball. He has also designed and installed hydraulic hop press power packs to the new hop gardens in the area. Whilst he lives in the heart of his business area - in Belgrove - Joel services the Tasman region. The majority of his work is in the forestry industry.

AIMEX HYDRAULICS Aimex Hydraulics has been a Hydraulink Distributor, based in Port Nelson, for over seven years. The team have over 40 years of experience between them; being on the road as mobile breakdown service techs and with a full backing of a hydraulic service technical team. Rob Martin (Mussels) has been with Aimex Hydraulics for three and a half years and has built up a very loyal following with our customers. He also has a wealth of knowledge in the fishing industry and loves what he does to help our customers. Putting teens through their paces Amy Russ For Tapawera Area School students Mitchell Brooks and Keanu Sharpe, deciding what they wanted to do after leaving school was a big call. They were both interested in pursuing a career path in the uniformed services and after recently completing a month-long course run by Whenua-Iti, and funded by the Ministry of Education, things are a bit clearer. “I always knew I wanted to join the army, since I was a kid,” says 16-year-old Keanu, “the course has definitely inspired me to pursue it now. I really enjoyed the first aid section and the LandSAR scenarios, it is quite amazing how quickly things can happen.” Students work in teams running through real life scenarios, and taking on different roles within their groups, to develop leadership skills and confidence in themselves and their abilities. Working through the different services; Police, LandSAR, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Paramedic and Civil Defence, the students also learn bush

Mitchell has been inspired to look into a career in the Police force when he finishes school and says the course was a great way to try things out, “it has pushed me more to go in that career path. I enjoyed the LandSAR techniques we were taught.” Lead tutor at Whenua-Iti Ben Fenselau says the stu-

dents are put to the test both physically and mentally, “they have to participate in the same physical pre-entry tests (PPT) that the Police and Fire Services do, so we definitely put them through their paces!” Ben explains that after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, the Coordinated Incident Management System (C.I.M.S) which was put in place to help manage

multiple response agencies, is now an integral part of the students learning, “it is the thread that weaves through our course. The students get the opportunity to take a leadership role. They are immersed in dry emergency scenarios and are given different roles and environments. It’s the kind of thing I would’ve wanted to do when I was at high school.”

Keryn has been a member of the Rotary Club for 10 years and the club’s director for the last couple. Motueka to Mapua relay attracts nearly 20 teams Stunning views, friendly rivalry and warm sunny weather made for a most enjoyable relay for Nelson and Marlborough runners and walkers on Saturday, September 8. The 26km social relay run over the Great Taste Trail between Motueka and Mapua attracted 18 teams of between 1 and 4 runners. The winning team was ‘MHC Speedsters’, in a superb time of 1hr 53 mins. In second place was ‘Team Jono’, a one-person team of Jono Leach, also from Marlborough, who ran the whole distance in 1hr 55 mins. Less than a minute behind him and in third place overall, was another individual runner, Nelson’s Claartjia Van Schle, in an equally impressive time of 1hr 56 mins. In 4th and 5th place respectively, were solo runner Stu Cottam and a four-person team, ‘Shades of Awesome’, from Nelson. The Waimea Whippets proved too strong for their opposition and were the first of the walking teams home in 3hrs 18mins, 9 minutes ahead of their nearest rivals. For most of the athletes this relay provided a very good practice run for the more competitive Queen Charlotte Relay on Saturday, September 15. The relay season concludes with the National Road Relay to be held in Christchurch on Saturday, October 6 and in which Tasman will be well-represented.

Annual school snow day a winner ASB to host launch party for nominations for the Sports Awards 2018 Murchison Area school held a ski-day, at Rainbow Ski Field, on August 14. Altogether 78 students and 33 adults attended the annual event. The 51st ASB Nelson Sports Awards will kick off in style this week with a launch party hosted by ASB to celebrate achievements in the sporting industry. The annual event honours the region’s most successful and inspiring athletes across a range of sports, with previous winners including Richmond’s Shaane Fulton, who took out the 2017 Junior Sportswoman of the Year for her efforts in track cycling. The inaugural launch party will be held on Thursday, 13 September, at the ASB Nelson branch. More than 60 people from business, banking and sporting industries, as well as local school sports leaders, are expected to attend, with ASB midlands regional manager Hayden Pierce saying it was a great chance to recognise previous winners. “We’re thrilled to be a sponsor of these awards honouring some truly amazing New Zealanders. Some of the country’s most talented and inspiring athletes have come from Nelson and it’s great to be able to celebrate their success,” he says. Almost 100 nominations across 38 sports were received for last year’s awards, with event organisers Sport Tasman expecting nominations to top that this year. The nine award categories include; sportsman, sportswoman and sports team of the year, junior sportsman, sportswoman and sports team of the year, coach of the year, master sportsperson or team of the year and a lifetime contribution to sport category. The awards will be held on November 24 at Annesbrook Church where each of the nine category winners will be announced, before the ultimate accolade of ASB sportsperson of the year is awarded. All Blacks leave a good impression with students Selected Waimea College students were treated to a visit from three members of the All Blacks squad on Friday, September 7. The trio were greeted with a powerful haka from members of the school’s three year 9 and 10 Sports Pro programmes, the U15 and U16 Waimea Combined rugby team players and the 1st XV girls rugby team, before heading into the staffroom for a questions and answers session, followed by signings. TJ Perenara, Rieko Ioane and Richie Mo’unga were put through their paces with the panel session and the squad members opened up about their childhood idols and how they cope with the pressure of being an All Black. With some sage advice for the young teens and a lot of selfies, it was obvious from the nodding and excited smiles that these young All Blacks had left a lasting impression on the Waimea College students. St Alban’s Turns 150 Back in 1868, Nelson was not long proclaimed a city and Appleby, with its fertile soils, was being cleared for farmland. The settlers could survive well at last, and to give thanks they built the small, well-crafted totara and matai church on the highway at Appleby. Bishop Suter himself dedicated the new church to St Alban, the first Christian martyr in England.

Concert a bright start to spring Being greeted at the Church on the Hill by Stormtroopers from Star Wars was just the beginning of a Spring Variety Show that delivered what was promised – music, humour and a surprise or two. The children from Richmond school led the opening item, always a joy to hear the young voices. So many artists donated their time and talent. We had soloists, a group of wonderful Solomon Island men and women, the two men with their guitars and a double-bass player delighted with their selection of songs. There was a monologue, poem, and a few jokes to keep the audience laughing. The two sopranos, plus our other performers showed us just how much talent there is in the Nelson area and how lucky we were to have them entertain us. Richmond Aquatic Centre are teaming up with Riverside Pool, to host a free Legends Move It class, and attempt to set a new CLM record for the biggest over 50’s exercise class. They will be challanging all the other CLM clubs to do the same. Richmond Aquatic Centre’s marketing coordinator, Crystal Gaiger, explains the event was created to promote active exercise for the older community, “the one-hour class is suitable for all abilities and ages over 50. There will be options for those who prefer to exercise sitting or standing. This event gives people a taste of what they can expect from each class held in Richmond or at Riverside.” Leigh Dalzell, CLM fitness instructor, holds daily Legends classes at the Richmond centre and loves exercising with the members, “they are such an amazing group to work with. Our programme is all about balance, agility, vitality and laughing!
