Cars to be banned from Mapua wharf
“
Simon Bloomberg Mapua businesses are supporting a decision to close the Mapua Wharf Precinct to vehicles from October this year after an independent health and safety report concluded that was the only way to ensure the safety of pedestrians in the area. A report to the Tasman District Council says the Mapua Wharf and Waterfront Park Reserve are becoming increasingly popular, placing pressure on the facilities and creating conflict between pedestrians and vehicles. That conflict is likely to worsen when the Shed 4 development opens in October, prompting council to consider a review of the Traffic Control ByLaws that regulate parking and traffic movements in the precinct. The by-law presently allows the closure of the precinct to traffic from December 20 to February 7 each year and every Sunday when the numbers of visitors are usually

highest. But the independent health and safety report says that’s inadequate and states that “separating vehicles and pedestrians by restricting vehicular access is the only feasible option to mitigate risks”. Although manager of the Jellyfish Cafe and Bar, Kat Heusel says it will be inconvenient for their staff, it will be good for the area. “There can be a lot of people around here at times and with the cars it’s dangerous, especially with so many children,” Kat says. Martin Lindley of the Laughing Fish Ceramic Studio on Aranui Rd says it makes perfect sense because “children

Beautiful snow caps cold weekend Jacob Chandler A winter wonderland of snow and ice blanketed parts of the region this weekend, including St Arnaud and parts of State Highway 6. There were even reports of snow falling in Tahunanui on Sunday night, but Metservice meteorologist Stephen Glassey says it was most like “graupel”, a type of fine hail. “Lots of people mistake it for snow because it’s white and frozen.”
It was definitely snow at St Arnaud though, and Lake Rotoiti Water Taxi operator Hamish Simpson says plenty of visitors were playing in the snow which fell all around the lake, township and walking tracks. “On Friday, I was out doing kayaking and a few exercises on the lake, so we were out in the thick of the snow when it came in. It wasn’t windy or anything but it was pretty thick snow,” he says.
“On Saturday at around 8am, I took the snowboard out and played around on the streets of St Arnaud before the cars got to it.” Hamish also operates an ice skate hire business but says the frosts came too late for the pond to be frozen enough to skate on. Rainbow Ski Area manager Jono Hay says Sunday was the best day of the season yet for the field.

Snow in St Arnaud Cars to be banned from Mapua wharf FROM PAGE 1
“It was beautiful, very nice clear sunny day. The cold temperatures were great because it keeps the snow nice and dry and light, you couldn’t ask for better really.” He says the field was “loaded” with people in one of the busiest days of the season yet. With snowfalls late Friday, the roads leading up to the ski area were icy and Jono says it was lucky people were able to get through for Saturday. The field is expecting a couple more sunny days before more snowfalls later in the week. The snow and ice didn’t bring joy to everyone, though. Those travel-
ling through the Lewis Pass on State Highway 6 had to detour or face a long wait, as snow closed the road. Tahunanui resident Sharon Knight was driving to Hanmer Springs for a holiday with friends and says she became frustrated by the closure. “Neither of the signs in Wakefield or Murchison said the Lewis Pass was closed. It took us ten hours to get to Hanmer,” she says. Nelson police didn’t have too many ice-related incidents to worry about over the weekend, but a milk tanker did become stuck on Takaka Hill reducing the road to one lane. For more snow photos, visit

and cars don’t mix”. He also says that the wharf precinct is ideally suited to being a pedestrian-only area as long as council ensure there is convenient parking for disabled drivers. Charisse Papworth of Forest Fusion Functional Art says if council is going to prohibit cars then it needs to “come to the party and make the area a beautiful pedestrian-friendly environment.” “At the moment there’s nothing - it’s awful. They need to put out things like benches and provide wheelchairs for elderly so they can get around.” Charisse also says she would like to see a contingency that allowed cars into the precinct
“when it’s a wet grey day and there’s not too many people around.” Council commercial manager Gene Cooper says council has been concerned about the safety of pedestrians in the Mapua Wharf Precinct for a number of years. “There are 800 to 1000 people going through there on a busy day and you only need to sit there and observe things for a while to see there’s a safety issue. It’s the three and fouryear-olds that we are worried about - they only need to run off from their parents and not see a ute backing up and we’ll have a tragedy.” However, Gene says council plans to permit access for emergency vehicles at all times and delivery vehicles in re-
stricted hours. It also plans to create about 100 car parks immediately outside the precinct to compensate for the loss of parking and also cater for the new businesses opening in Shed 4 and future growth. Council has been using Mapua’s remediated land for overflow parking but it plans to sell that land later this year. The immediate parking issues at the Mapua Wharf area will be resolved by bringing forward funding for Mapua car parking improvements scheduled for 2018-2019 to pay for the new parks. Gene says there are now also temporary parking restrictions in place in the Mapua Precinct after construction of the Shed 4 development started last Wednesday.

Inspector Matt Arnold-Kelly had no intention of applying for the job as Nelson’s top cop when he took on the role as Nelson Bays Police Acting Area Commander after Steve Greally left earlier this year. But Matt enjoyed working with the area commander’s “high quality team” so much he soon changed his mind and applied for – and got – the job. Matt started his first official day in the role on Monday and is looking forward to the challenges ahead. “I had no intention of applying for the role because I loved the job I was already doing. I’m not really an ambitious career person either, but once I started in the job I realised that I enjoyed the challenges that keep coming at you from different directions.” Matt also had reservations about the demands of the job impacting on his other job as a solo father of a seven-year-old daughter. “I went on a school trip with my daughter to the museum and she said to me that evening, ‘Dad you spent all you time on the phone’. Initially I blamed that on the job, but then I thought I have three very good senior sergeants and I could have turned my phone off. So it wasn’t about the role, it was how I managed it.”

Inspector Matt Arnold-Kelly has been appointed area commander for the Nelson Bays Police, which includes all of Nelson and the Tasman district. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Interestingly, Matt, who was born and raised in Nelson where he attended Nayland College, started his policing career in the UK after “a six-month OE turned into six years”. He spent two years as a constable in Manchester before returning to New Zealand in 1996. Matt was posted to Auckland, Oamaru, West Coast and then Wellington, before returning to Nelson where he spent time as district manager of deployment and then, prevention, before stepping up to the top job. He says he initially joined
the police because “I like helping people and lots of variety in my work”. Although Matt says he is “still getting a feel for the role” he has some ideas he would like implement. He has already initiated a “health check of how we are doing things across the business”. “We are doing more than consulting, we are getting the ideas from our staff rather than imposing our ideas on them. We are putting it onto the staff and they are coming up with the ideas. We’ll try them and see if they work - it just makes sense to me.”

Our mountainbike tracks amongst the best
Simon Bloomberg
It’s official. Nelson has some of the best mountainbiking in the world and that’s good news for tourism. Last week the US-based International Mountain Bicycling Association gave the region’s network of tracks a Gold Ride Centre rating. IMBA trails specialist Jason Wells assessed Nelson’s tracks last month after Nelson’s Mountainbike Trails Trust applied
“
to have the region recognised as an IMBA Ride Centre. On Thursday, the internationally recognised organisation announced that it rated Nelson as one of the world’s few Gold level Ride Centre mountainbiking destinations. IMBA said: “The range of trail types is amazing, from gentle, family-oriented trail riding to full-on downhill runs, backcountry adventures and everything in between. Even better is that most of those trails

regional benefits right through this process.” The Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council, Nelson Tasman Tourism and the Economic Development Agency, and forestry companies AFM and Hancocks, fully supported the project. Jason says thousands of mountainbikers around the world use the IMBA website to find the best destinations for riding and a gold rating could result in an influx of international tourists to Nelson.

The wait will soon be over for frustrated drivers who have been seeing red at the lights on Gladstone Rd with a new camera system being installed to help improve traffic flows. The phasing of lights at three intersections on Gladstone Rd, which are owned by the New Zealand Transport Agency and cost $4.3 million, have been an issue since they were installed in 2009. But the good news is that NZTA has installed cameras at the lights to relay information to its Traffic Operations Centre in Wellington so that traffic flow can be improved by remote control. NZTA’s Anthony Frith says the signals at those three intersections are currently managed by Nelson City Council. In the coming weeks, management of the lights, between 6am and 8pm, will be transferred to our NZTA’s operations centre to optimise the lights to ensure motorists are able to move through the intersection as smoothly as possible. NZTA will make changes to the phasing while monitoring how effective they are in real time so it can fine-tune the changes. It will be able to link the three intersections to better suit current traffic flows and make some other minor adjustments.

parks, as well as more natural trail in both plantation forest and native bush.” Mountainbike Trails Trust chairman Chris Mildon says the gold rating is great news for the whole region. “It will give us a real international presence as an attractive mountainbike destination”. Chris says the MTB Trails Trust paid for Jason’s visit and the $12,300 assessment. “Although it’s quite an investment, we’ve been focused on the positive

Intruder wakes War truck still used by local business Richmond couple in their bedroom Simon Bloomberg
Nelson police are investigating an incident in the early hours of Sunday morning in which a Richmond couple awoke to find an unknown person in their bedroom. The incident happened about 3am in the Gladstone Rd area. The person left when the couple woke up. Police were called shortly after but the person was not located. The only description available at this stage is an adult male of small build. Police would like to hear from anyone who has information about this incident or has witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the Richmond area. Police also advise people to ensure their doors are locked at night.

A United States Army truck that was used in World War II and is still being operated by a Nelson business today will be one of the star attractions of the VJ Day commemorations to be held at Rutherford Park this Saturday. VJ Day marks the US victory over Japan on August 15, 1945 that effectively ended World War II. The historic day will be commemorated at Rutherford Park on Saturday when the sacrifices of Nelson soldiers who fought against the Japanese in the Pacific will be honoured. The commemoration will also feature a display of World War II vehicles including Waimea Drilling’s 1943 Chevrolet truck that was used by US troops in Germany. The Chevrolet K44 was set up with a drilling rig and used by the Signal Corps for boring holes for telegraph poles and, incredibly, it is still being used by Waimea Drilling today. Waimea Drilling owner Woody Woodford says the drilling trucks were a critical piece of equipment for establishing communications for the advancing forces in the war. It was also used for the less glamorous task of drilling holes for latrines for camps set up by the troops. “It was sent over to Europe for the invasion of Germany with the American troops but it’s never had a bullet hole in it,” Woody says. Woody says the truck was later used by the US occupied forces and Germans to help rebuild Germany after the war. It

It’s been used to drill holes all around Nelson - things like posts for Kiwi fruit orchards and it did all the holes for the piles for Braemar Hospital.” Organiser of Saturday’s commemoration, Kerry Neal says Nelson last commemorated VJ Day with a parade down
Trafalgar St in 1995. “That was a great day, people just turned up and took part, it was a great occasion.” Nelson RSA president Barry Pont says it is nice for the focus to be on World War II after all the Gallipoli Anzac commemorations earlier this year. “We still have around 80 members here in Nelson who served in World War II and many of them in the Pacific, so it’s great to recognise that.” Kerry says victory over Japan was a big deal for New Zealand as Japanese submarines and planes were seen around the country. Saturdays “informal commemoration” will start at around 10am.

Nelson Arts Festival offers ‘biggest line-up to date’ A smorgasbord of national and global talent has been locked in for this year’s Nelson Arts Festival, making it the biggest and most spectacular line-up to date. A total of 65 shows, including seven international acts, have been secured for this year’s festival, including Australian company Casus Circus’s new work Finding the Silence, and American jazz legend David Friesen. Musical crowd pleasers SJD & The Black Quartet, Sam Manzanza and the Afrobeat Band, and Trinity Roots with their Irish friends, will also be on offer, as will a raft of celebrated New Zealand writers, including Charlotte Grimshaw, Patricia Grace and Gavin Bishop. The line-up includes almost a third of locally-produced content, including The Billboard Project where four local and two visiting artists will create works of art beside the Maitai River. Councillor Gaile Noonan says the Council is thrilled to put on such a “much-loved” arts event for Nelsonians and visitors to the region.

Origin’s ready for take off
News
WEDNESDAY 12 August 2015
Andrew Board Originair will take to the skies on Wednesday but for owner Robert Inglis the thrill won’t be seeing an Origin plane takeoff – after all it’s hardly his first maiden flight. Originair is the latest airline under Robert’s ownership and he says months of hard work and preparation have been the exciting part for him, with this week’s first flight “just another step”. Despite his long association with aeroplanes, Robert says his first taste of flying wasn’t pleasant. “I was waiting about three days for my first born to turn up at the hospital in Motueka and I was getting a bit anxious. My father-in-law said he was learning to fly and he said ‘come to the aero club and we’ll take you for a flight to take your mind of it’. I didn’t like it much but a month or two later I went back and did some more flying. I got a private licence, then a commercial licence.” From there, Robert operated a fleet of planes in conjunction with the Nelson Aviation College and then started flying from Motueka to Wellington before deregulation opened up competition to Air New Zealand for domestic air travel. He then started Air Nelson before selling it to Air New Zealand and later founded Origin Pacific. Robert says he has nothing to hide with that airline’s collapse, one reason why he chose to call his new airline Originair. “If we called it anything else it could be seen that we were trying to hide and we don’t think we’ve got anything to hide about,” he says. “We just got caught in some aero-politics that became the perfect storm.” Origin Pacific hit trouble when Qantas pulled out of a deal to work together in the hope of buying a large share of Air New Zealand.
e l p o e p d o o f h s Y ou r f re Originair managing director Robert Inglis with one of his aeroplanes. Photo: Jacob Chandler. That left Origin with leased planes that it couldn’t fill and contracts that it couldn’t break, meaning it had to fold. The Commerce Commission later ruled that Qantas couldn’t buy a stake in Air NZ. But with that behind him, Robert has assembled a new team and refurbished planes to fly again. This week’s first flight will take passengers from Nelson to Palmerston North, a route Robert knows well. “People ask ‘why Palmerston’. Well, the Palmerston North route has the classic key requirements for an airline. There is a water barrier and it is a short sector, no terrain in the way, so it’s usually a nice, smooth flight.” He says it’s a route that has been successful for him at Air Nelson and Origin Pacific, as has the Nelson to Wellington route that will start next month. “We’re not serious about an attack on Air New Zealand on the Wellington route. It doesn’t cost us anymore for the crew to do four trips than two, so it works in nicely to do that extra service to Wellington.” Although Originair is nowhere near the size of what Origin Pacific was, Robert says it means they will be stable. “It’s hardly a big deal, it’s a very modest operation and we’re not exposed to the international markets.” Ticketing information and schedules are at www.originair.nz

Speed limit dropped from 80km to 50km outside Wakatu Estate: Could work, but after driving this road almost everyday for the last two years and seeing a lot of near misses in that time. I think the main problem is driver incompetence, I've seen a lot more near misses on that intersection caused by people going 4050kph and pissing off every other road user around them, which then causes people to get impatient and drive erratically, than I have people driving to the speed limit and being aware of their surroundings. Anton Stechman.

Perhaps the council needed to give advanced warning of this. Not let people travel to work at 80kmh and then drop it to 50 after lunch with no warning of changed road speed in sight. Sue Sara.

The problem with that intersection is that nobody knows when or who is giving way. They should paint a white line across where people feed in to the main traffic flow, so that people travelling at 80kms can continue and the people coming into the traffic can wait! Problem solved! Cheryl Wood Lambert.

Drop it to 50km and have two roundabouts, one for Elms St and one for Saxton Field. Garry and Maree Smith. Ultra Fast Broadband coverage: No help for Cable Bay. I'm sure most of the telecommunications companies are deliberately avoiding upgrading cellphone towers to keep people paying for landlines they would most likely ditch if cell coverage was better. Also, can't see why the same charge is applied for a property that can only receive standard (aka slow) broadband to someone who is receiving cable? Properties who can only get slow broadband should be paying less for their internet, not the same prices. In effect, rural properties end up subsidising urban properties which receive better service. Johanna Fowler. Scallops back in Tasman Bay: If things are looking good in the Tasman Bay then why the hell are they going to fish there? Leave the bloody things alone! Maxine Foster. Seriously... commercial guys will obliterate it in the first season. Leave it for us recreational guys! Gavin Palfreman. Cars to be banned from Mapua wharf: Lots of car parking in the huge new car park, maybe a sixty second walk to the wharf. How would I use

the boat ramp? Is the council going to put a concrete ramp at Grossi Point? The boat ramp gets used by many and has been forgotten about. Richard Marshall. Great idea, from someone who works down there. I'm even hoping for better lighting down Aranui Rd leading to the wharf area, for the safety of diners and staff who work late during the summer months. And having to park a mile down the road so spaces are left for visitors. That'd be awesome. Janelle Thorpe. I took my 90-plus year old mum there a short time ago and had to park way up the road. Isn't it pretty much pedestrians only already? Ruth McLaren. It's a great idea. People can drop off elderly just outside the Apple Shed and park the car round the corner. Reinhard Gebhard. Think this is a fabulous idea. Will make it even more 'peoplefriendly'. Highly recommend locals attend the Community Association meetings on the second Monday of each month (7pm in the hall). This is a great chance to hear what is happening, with councillors there to answer questions and listen to our ideas! They let us know about more parking, that is to be provided soon. Fiona BibbySmith.

far been unsuccessful, principal Justin Neal says the attic of the school’s oldest classroom, built in 1920, is proving to be the next best thing. “We’ve had the kids in the ceiling looking for things and they have found some incredible stuff. There’s an old valve radio, ink wells that students used to dip their pens into for writing, old certificates and two shields and lots of photos.” Justin says the radio was “so old the kids didn’t even know what it was” although he joked that “if you showed them a cassette player they wouldn’t know what that was either.” The shields were for the Boys’ 220 Yards and Girls’ Skipping and dated back to 1917, two years after the school started. Justin says another interesting find has been a booklet titled ‘By-Laws of Education in the District of Nelson 1932.’ He says the children have been fascinated by the section on corporal punishment which informs teachers, in great detail, when and how to administer the strap.

Mahana School on it’s very first day in 1915. The school started in a packing shed on the corner of School and Dominion Roads with a roll of just 12 students. “It says the teacher has to be fair about using the strap and because if it is used too much it indicates their discipline is too weak. It also says that senior girls can only be strapped in private and not in front of the rest of the class. “It’s been very educational for the kids to learn about this. We’re also going to incorporate some of it in our production for the centenary.” In the mean time, Justin says they will intensify their search for the time capsules. “The kids are desperate to find them. From what I can gather there are three of them - one
was buried in the 1960s and another at the 75th anniversary in 1975 and a third at some uncertain time under the old cobb hut that used to be here. “We will keep making inquiries in the community to try and find out if anyone knows where they were buried. There are still two or three families here that had grandparents at the school so they might know something.” Registrations for the school’s centenary celebrations close on August 14 and can be made on-line at mahana.school.nz

Double-Olympian drops in on Ranzau School
Simon Bloomberg Ranzau School students are hoping they are good at taking selfies after Black Sticks double-Olympian Shea McAleese visited the school last week. Shea spent Thursday afternoon at the school as part of his role as an Olympic Ambassador with ANZ. The veteran of 150 games for the Black Sticks inspired the pupils to aim high and work hard to achieve their goals and then talked about his experiences playing hockey at both the London and Beijing Olympics. When Shea was at school in Napier, he was inspired by a talk from New Zealand Olympic board-sailing legend Barbara Kendall and says he hopes to be equally inspirational to the latest generation of school students. “She said, ‘If you have a dream, chase it. Don’t give up’. Dreams and goals are important for young people so I talked about that and hope I inspired them a little,” Shea says. But Shea also entertained the school with some amusing and in-
formative stories from the Olympics, including one about Usain Bolt eating six chicken McNuggets and drinking a Coke before winning the 100m final at Beijing. He also showed some photos of him posing with his role model tennis super-star Roger Federer and with 2.13m tall NBA star Pau Gasol towering above him - Shea is just 1.77m. And then it was time for Shea to get another photo, taking out his cellphone for a selfie with the kids and promising to post it as the centrepiece of his website if was the best one from the schools he was visiting this month. “I get a massive buzz coming out to the smaller schools - they are always so friendly and appreciative,” Shea says. “ Shea also had a session with the school leaders, with principal Dave Samson saying “it is a wonderful opportunity for the students to engage with Olympic athlete and learn some leadership skills.” Shea is hoping to gain selection for the Black Sticks for his third Olympics in Rio next year.

Just a thought... Hi everyone, my name is David Jensen and I am honoured to be the new senior pastor at the Richmond Baptist Church. My family and I are truly thankful to be part of a great church, in a great town, in a great district. Thankful also, after being up north, to be back in Crusader country. Now, I must confess to you all that I had no idea just how beautiful Nelson was until we got here. The town has great character and it’s great to see the majestic snow-capped mountains in the distancewow. And what a blessing to have so many wonderful amenities at our disposal. We are truly blessed here with great parks, cycle tracks, walkways and beaches. Now, I don’t know about you, but I find it’s easy to, over time, take good things like this for granted. And this reminds me of something that took place nearly 2000 years ago. So in a nutshell
Pastor David Jensen, Richmond Baptist Church. what happened was that Jesus, the long awaited Messiah, healed a whole group of lepers. It’s recorded in Luke chapter 17 that while Jesus was entering a certain village, 10 lepers, who kept their distance, cried out, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” Jesus looked at them and said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, their leprosy disappeared. Friends, it’s important to understand that the loving power
of Jesus didn’t just restore their bodies- it restored their lives! I say this because at this time in history lepers were isolated from, and ostracised by, society. So the only way that these men were able to be restored to their families, synagogues and workplaces was for a priest to verify that they were not in any way contagious. Now, I imagine that these men, who had just been healed, were keen as mustard to get to the priests so that they could take hold of normal life again. One of these men though, instead of going to the priest went back to thank Jesus and give glory to God. Friends, what amazes me most in this account is not the miraculous healing. No, what amazes me most is that only one man, out of this whole group, expressed his gratitude for what had been done for him. Thank You, God, for the many blessings You have graciously bestowed upon us

Young singer a top performer Waimea Intermediate student Danielle Aitken continues to impress as a vocalist, wining a major award at this year’s Nelson Performing Arts Competitions at Nelson College for Girls. Danielle, aged 12, won the Mrs Comparini Cup for the Most Promising Female Voice in the two-day competitions held late last month. It was a top performance by Danielle who was competing against many older, more experienced singers ranging in age up to 18. It was the second year that Danielle has entered the annual competitions and coordinator and Nelson Performing Arts Competitions Life Member Jan Berthelsen says “Danielle’s voice has been improving year by year”. “She has been gaining in confidence and this year she really stood out,” Jan says. “The judge (Wellington’s Rosemary Bromley) said she won because of the quality of her voice - she has a lot of promise.” Danielle entered five classes in the vocal section of the competitions that also included instrumental and speech and drama sections. The competitions are aimed at enabling young students to gain valuable experience as performers in a range of performing arts. Danielle has been singing in choirs since she was.co.nz a year four pupil at Brightwater School. She says her music teacher at Brightwater, John Phillips, was responsible for inspiring her to start singing.

Simon Bloomberg Richmond’s Suzie Wood and Trevor Voyce of Nelson justified their pre-race favouritism in Sunday’s Gibb’s Hill Challenge, with Suzie easily winning the women’s section and Trevor setting a new race record for individual men. A former Commonwealth Games cyclist, Suzie made a good start to the race, finishing the opening 23km road cycle from Takaka to Wainui in seventh overall in 44 minutes 1 second. She completed the 21km mountain run around the northern section of Abel Tasman National Park in 2hr 2min 35sec. before riding back to Takaka in 53min 8sec to finish sixth overall in 3hr 39min 44sec. “I was in the second bunch
on the first bike and ran with Wayne Leighton for quite a while which was nice but then I suffered on the bike back to Takaka,” Suzie says. “I’ve done the race about three times now and this was my fastest time, so I’m quite pleased.” Suzie was using the race as a lead-up to the Spring Challenge adventure race to be held in Wanaka on September 26. She will team-up with Sophie Hart and Fleur Pawsey for the race which they won last year. “Gibbs Hill was a good tester for me but I think I’ll need to get out and do some longer treks before Spring Challenge. Garin impress with hard-fought win An impressive third quarter paved the way for Garin Senior A’s 26–21 win over the higher-ranked Jacks Pro Netball in the Premier 2 game at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. Garin had a 7–6 lead at the first break and although they drew the second quarter the college girls appeared to be growing in confidence as the game progressed. There was a huge amount of turnover ball in the second stanza, so much so even the umpires were heard to comment on it. There were only three converted from a total of 18 turnovers. The majority of Garin’s turnovers occurred when they attempted to cross more than two channels in the offensive third. Jacks goal keep Jordan Webby was on hand to severely punish the wayward pass. Garin’s inspirational captain, Poppy Restieaux is gradually working her way back from an injury sustained at Queen’s Birthday weekend. While her team-mates have put in some commendable perfor-

Since Poppy’s injury, Kate Hand has moved from the defensive end to help out in the shooting circle and she has handled it with aplomb. Both Kate and Poppy are confident on a high delivery and with good body positioning there is very little opportunity for their opposites to snare a rebound. With Kate’s move to the offensive end, it has opened the door for more court time for Mereana Haldane who has established a formidable partnership with the talented Sarah Robinson. Centre, Holly Webster put in a solid 40 minutes as she worked hard to establish straight lines through court, and she was effec-
tive in pressuring Jacks pass into their shooters. Jess Brooks was a handy replacement at half time at wing attack, she offered more off the line and as a shooter herself she knew where to place the ball into Kate and Poppy. As Kate and Poppy’s partnership grew, so too did their tally as they outscored Jacks 11–4 in the third quarter. With Poppy’s return to court being managed she was replaced by Brie Lobb for the final quarter. While there wasn’t a lot of opportunity for the college team as Jacks left their best until last, Brie showed signs of rotating the circle nicely with Kate. With their first win in the championship round, Garin will be working towards the pinnacle of their season – the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament at the end of the month. Garin won the B Grade last year and will step out in A Grade this year.

Waka ama gaining in popularity Kate Russell Outrigger canoeing, also known in New Zealand as “waka ama,” is a rapidly-growing sport in Nelson, and the local Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club offers a range of options for beginners right through to seasoned canoeists. Club president Peter Bywater, who has been involved with the club for eight years, says that outrigger canoeing is a very social, accessible sport that is great for fitness. The club, which was formed in 2001, has around 120 members, and has doubled its membership in the past five years. “We’ve grown quite significantly,” says Peter. “We cater for a large range of ages, so there are ten year olds up to 70 year olds getting involved.” The club participates in a winter series every year, where clubs throughout the Nelson Marlborough region take turns at hosting
a race every month over the winter. The clubs involved are Maitahi, Waikawa, Golden Bay, Motueka, and Whakatu Marae. At the end of the series, the points are tallied up and the winner takes the trophy. So far this winter, they have had three races, with the last one to be held in Kaiteriteri at the end of August. “It’s a great way to keep everyone active over the winter months,” says Peter. The summer months are also busy for the club, with lots of races throughout the region, a big regatta in Kaiteriteri, and a fun day at the beach. The club also holds their own race at Nelson Lakes every February. If people want to find out more, or give outrigger canoeing a go, the club holds a club day every Sunday where people can just show up and try it out. For more information about the club and events, visit www.maitahi-outrigging.org.nz.

The Lantern
What is important? When I was young I visited many Cathedrals in England. The beautiful stained glass, the soaring arches, the decoration all filled me with wonder but what also fascinated me were the memorial plaques in the wall and floor. Many of them were very worthy, but a few were quite shocking, saying things like, “a mean person” and “no one will grieve now he is gone”! I also read some time ago a book called “What they teach you at Harvard Business School”. It is about a journalist who enrolled on the MBA programme at Harvard, a programme that is reputed to have produced more multi-millionaires than any other. The journalist recounted how many successful men and women came and talked to their class. Someone always asked if they had any regrets. Time after time it was the loss of their family; not being there
Youth group volunteers a great help
when their mother or father was dying, not seeing their son score the winning goal for his college, not being there to see their child presented with an award. One of the journalist’s learnings was that he didn’t like what the very competitive environment made him. He was happy to work to be the best he could be but not at the cost of his family and friendships. It is easy to say we all have choices, but sometimes we find ourselves in places which come at high cost in terms of our relationships. Often when we started out we didn’t know that is how it would be, or maybe we just drifted into that place, or perhaps things around us changed. We may not have chosen to be where we are now, but we can choose to stop and work out what is important. What would I want to be remembered for? — Shiona Frengley, parishioner
What Messy Church is all about
At Messy Church children and adults of all ages meet together. Messy Church is designed mostly for people that find it hard to find God in a more traditional service. It involves creativity, celebration and hospitality. Usually we begin with a game activity, more games and crafts follow with a story and time to connect with God. It is not quiet and you don’t have to sit still. Always we finish with a meal together and go home at 6pm. We meet at 4pm on the third Sunday of each month.

St Albans, Appleby Services
Tom Gower has recently taken over the leadership of Messy Church at Church on the Hill. Tom says, “Messy Church is the fastest growing church across the Western world because they are starting and growing all over the place.” Tom is excited to lead a great team and to be part of growing a community where people get to know each other and learn about Jesus together. For Tom this means more than learning though – it is about experiencing God’s love in a very real way.
Jared Altments and Paniah Adams-Martin are fantastic volunteers who have been helping our youth pastor, Micah, run the Friday night youth group. Jared Altments is currently working as a music teacher at Nelson College for Girls and is also the worship director for St Stephen’s Community Church in Tahunanui. He has a great passion for worship and teaching young people to develop their musical abilities. Several of Jared’s students were successful at the recent Smokefree Rockquest competition. Paniah is currently working in retail and is involved in various ministries at St Stephen’s. She gets on really well with the girls at youth group and has been a blessing to us. Paniah was originally involved in The Shed youth group in Greymouth before moving to Nelson early last year. Jared and Paniah also delivered some exciting news a couple of months ago; they’re engaged! Jared and Paniah have truly been a blessing to our youth ministry and we’re very grateful for their help.
What’s on
At Church on the Hill there is a time capsule under the foundation stone that was laid in 1872. This was found during the extension of the building in the 1980s. It was reburied with another time capsule from 1984. See us again in the Waimea Weekly on 9 September

Mum, its one year ago that our cement that held our family together slipped peacefully away. Life has gone on but it’s not the same without you. You were one amazing lady, never complaining despite all you went thru & living life to the max as best as you could. Didn’t say it often but I hope you know how much I loved you. Teena xx
