Tapawera hops along just nicely Amy Russ Tapawera is making its mark on the hop-growing stage as having the perfect conditions to grow export quality crops. Local grower Colin Oldham is no stranger to the industry. Being a third-generation farmer, and spending 35 years in the business, he says Tapawera has the right climate and position for growing the product. “Tapawera has always been known as an ideal place to grow hops. With its relatively low winds, high sunshine hours and hard frosts, that creates full dormancy for the plant over winter.” Ten hops farms are now operating in the Tapawera, Tadmore Valley and Matariki area, a number that Steve Wilson from NZ Hops says is definitely up from recent years. New Hoplands was one of the first farms to grow organic hops in the country and his family have seen their fair share of successes and challenges over his time in the industry. “Seasonal variations have always been challenging for hop farming with the scariest one being hail when it wipes out your crop just before harvest. We have experienced other challenges when there has been an over-supply of hops in the world and prices have come right down, or contracts are renegged on. This comes from American and German growers planting up due to high prices and shortages. However great our hops are here, it all has a flow-on effect for us.” Colin says Tapawera will be the largest hop growing area in the country, bringing job creation to the region. “The initial development of farms is bringing skilled contractors to the area over the short term, however a huge number of seasonal workers will be required in the area at different times of the year.”

New street design for Brightwater Over $3 million has been budgeted for town centre upgrades around the region, with Brightwater destined to receive theirs first. A new concept design for Ellis St aims to create safe and accessible pedestrian, cycling and vehicle linkages, improve the streetscape and recognise local stories. Network Tasman have recently confirmed they will contribute to undergrounding the overhead power lines along Ellis St. The Tasman District Council carried out community consultation in Brightwater in 2017. This included discussions with a working group of representatives from local business, Brightwater School. The residents’ association, police, heavy haulage companies and others were also involved.
The council also did an interactive brainstorming session with Brightwater School pupils, and a public drop-in session for the wider community to contribute ideas. Construction of the upgrade is scheduled for late 2019. One of the elements of the upgrade is construction of a roundabout on the intersection of Ellis St and Lord Rutherford Rd. Currently, turning trucks have to cross the centre line to get around the corner, which is not safe. The intersection will be widened and a small roundabout installed to prevent this happening. Detailed design for the street upgrade are nearly finished, and council say more details are ex- Mila-Mae Morgan, Mere-Hana Smith, Jacinda Betty and Maddison Smith give the thumbs up for the pected soon. upcoming Brightwater town centre upgrade. Mayor to the rescue Emily Beaumont Tony Newport says he’ll never play the piano again, but he doesn’t mind, considering he’s never played it anyhow. Late in the afternoon of Friday, November 30, Tony was walking up Richmond’s Queen St north of Washbourn Dr when he tripped on a piece of uneven pavement, sustaining injuries to his left thumb and fingers and also becoming covered in blood from grazes. “A number of passersby and motorists stopped to ask if I was ok. I wasn’t, but I managed to use my good hand and cellphone to call my wife to pick me up.” At age 75 and with shock starting to set in, Tony soon spotted another vehicle stopping to assist and immediately recognised mayor Richard Kempthorne, who quickly located his first aid kit and stemmed the bleeding. “I’d just like to say thank-you to our worship, the mayor. It’s just a bit of good news about our oft-maligned local leaders.”

Brightwater break-ins wreaking havoc Amy Russ Brightwater has been hit with a spate of break-ins recently that has left locals feeling angry and frustrated. Ten incidents have been reported to police since December 4 and Richmond senior sergeant Martin Tunley says police are well aware of the situation and have a few angles they are working
on. “We encourage the public to report any suspicious activity immediately to the police and to ensure their cars are locked up.” Marty Price, coordinator for Neighbourhood Support Waimea, says the Richmond Community Patrol is in the area every weekend and he can’t stress enough for residents to contact police immediately if they see anything
out of the norm. “If police are called immediately, they - or ourselves - may be nearby and can hopefully catch these offenders. I also ask that the Brightwater community consider setting up a Neighbourhood Support street group. We already have a few running out here but the area is growing each day and more streets are being developed.”

Community dinner a ‘team’ effort Amy Russ Reporter
amy@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Each year the local community churches join forces with a team of volunteers to create the annual Richmond Community Christmas Dinner. To be held at the Richmond School hall on Tuesday, December 25, organiser Michaela Ross says the idea stemmed from holding the community church lunches. “The first year we held the Christmas dinner we had around 120 people attend. Last year numbers were up around 175. We were pretty much at capacity at that time. Michaela says the event works because they get a huge number of volunteerwithout whom it wouldn’t happen. “We have absolutely tons of people who play their part in it all. We have also had a huge number of donations from a huge number of people and that is a massive help.”
The team from Teapot Valley have cooked the Christmas dinners in the past and are doing it again this year. “It is astounding that people are giving up their own Christmas to give back to the community. What I am excited about also is the number of local churches all working together to make this happen.” Volunteer Vicki Spiers says they really appreciate help both before and after the event. “People can contact the church office if they would like to help out. Please leave a message with full name and contact details for us to follow up.” Michaela says everyone has a need. “For anyone who thinks that this is their best option, they are more than welcome. We would love to see you.” Tickets are available from the Richmond Mall and Vicki says they essential for people to attend the dinner. The event runs from 11:30 until 2pm. Call the Church on the Hill on 5448844 for more information.

The Santa Grotto is now open in the mall and Belinda is excited to get things going. “This is the first year we have an actual grotto. Photo are taken and printed on site by Santa’s two elves and each photo gets an entry into the draw for someone to win the Grotto playhouse.” Santa will be visiting daily and there are three storytime sessions each week. Police focus on distracted drivers across the region Police will be focusing on fighting driver distraction in the region this December, says senior sergeant Scott Richardson, area manager for prevention. Last year distraction was a factor in 36 fatal road crashes and 192 serious injury crashes in New Zealand. Police focus is on the four behaviours which are the main contributors of death and injury on New Zealand roads: a lack of restraints, impairment such as alcohol or fatigue, distraction, and speed. “We will be doing spot-and-stop operations, where police spotters will be watching for people not wearing seatbelts, running lights and using mobile phones. We want to make sure everyone makes it through to a safe and happy Christmas.”

Crime rampage ends with a swim A 23-year-old man who went on a crime rampage that kicked off with stealing a bicycle before progressing to vehicles during the morning of Saturday, December 8, was arrested after being pulled from a lake in Hope. The man has been charged with unlawful taking, aggravated assault, robbery, threatening to kill, reckless driving, failing to stop and assault with a weapon. “It was great team work by police and the public to catch the offender, it shows the value of everyone working together to keep our communities safe.” says Sergeant Dale Smith.

Harness racing investigation ongoing: After investigation of alleged corruption in a harness race held at the Richmond Racecourse earlier this year, New Zealand Police are continuing to investigate allegations of race-fixing in the industry. To date, 13 people have been charged in relation to Operation Inca, a longrunning investigation by Police’s National Organised Crime Group. The investigation began with information supplied by the Racing Integrity Unit (RIU). A number of people have been interviewed as part of last week’s enquiries and betting anomalies have been identified in at least one race in May 2018. The RIU is considering charges relating to the breach of rules around driver betting in relation to these anomalies. Further arrests and charges by police are also possible.

Joan (Joanie) Smith
It is nearly that time on the calendar when Queen St closes its road for the annual Richmond Market Day on Friday, December 28. Market regulars come from far and wide to attend. Richmond businesses bring their specials out onto the street to barter their bargains, and music and entertainment is provided for the whole family. Richmond Unlimited marketing and events coordinator, Charlotte Bidlake, says people
from all over the country register for the event. “It is not just local stalls, we have loads of travelling stalls attending as well. We have a real mixture of goods; like locally-made artisan products, heaps of food stalls, plant stalls, seasonal berries, garden art and sculpture stalls, to name a few. And the shops on Queen St come out with some really great deals as well!” Last year over 120 guest stalls were registered plus an awesome turnout of Queen St’s
own business stalls, – combined with all the sunshine - Charlotte says it was a huge success. “It was massive last year, I think the biggest one we have ever had.” She is urging other stall holders to secure their place at the market by registering for the event. “It is not too late to register.” Contact Charlotte Bidlake at info@richmondunlimited. co.nz or call 5444898 for more information.

Stay safe around downed power lines It doesn’t happen very often, but sometimes power lines can end up on the ground. If a car crashes into a pole, or if a tree falls onto power lines, the lines can break and fall down. By knowing what to do in emergencies such as this, you can keep yourself and others safe.
Joanie had a debilitating disease called Inclusion Body Mystotis which affects the muscles in the body. This is a horrible disease and Joan battled the frustrations of it over a long period of time. It made it difficult to do the most simple of tasks but Joanie never complained. From the early 80’s until 2016 she ran, alongside her husband Kerry, the popular Richmond Carpet Centre. She was a familiar hands-on owner who looked after clients, answered phones, looked after company reps and anybody else who came through the doors.

Call our fault line on 0800 508 100 to tell us where the downed lines are located
We will get someone there as quickly as possible to make the lines safe and repair them. The only people who should ever come near downed power lines are our experienced and trained line mechanics. They know the danger and they will only approach downed lines if they are sure it’s safe to do so.
What do you do if a power line comes down on a car you’re in? If you are in a car and the lines come down on top of your car you should:

Nelson Airport Nelson Airport Nelson Airport Airport NelsonAirport Airport Nelson Airport Nelson Car Storage parking advice Car Storage Car Car Storage Storage Nelson Airport parkingparking service advice parking advice There have been a lot of frustrated travelers at Nelson Airport recently due to construction work on the new terminal and changes in the parking areas. In peak times it's a 500m walk from the end of the far car park, often the only area left with empty parks, so plenty of time needs to be allowed to avoid missed flights. When you return from your travels, it’s wise to use the ticket machines in front of the terminal to pay for your parking while you are waiting for your luggage, as the machines at the barrier gates do not accept cash.

Have your say... Something on your mind? Let our Editor know in our ‘Your Voice’ column and be in to win a $50 Richmond Mall voucher. Letter to the Editor sales@waimeaweekly.co.nz Dear Editor, Does anyone else besides me think that it is utterly absurd for Tasman District Council to state in the Newsline Updates that speakers in the Public Forum of meetings are allowed a maximum of three minutes? And no questions to be asked or responded to. Not even enough time for a speaker to give her/his name, where s/he lives and what the topic is..... Not much of an open, informative or even democratic process as far as I can see. Oh yes, the Mayor can exercise his discretion under Standing Orders to allow “an extended public form”. As was the case for the full council meeting on 30 November (single topic/ Waimea dam). With 30 minutes allocated for those in opposition, and 30 minutes for those in favour of the project. But still with speakers being allowed only 3 minutes. But wait! One speaker had “the floor” for 20 minutes. And the meeting went on for 7 hours? So, the Mayor can also allow public forum speaker time extensions? Is this in Standing Orders? If so, it wasn’t in the Newsline Update of 28 November. But really... time allocation of 3 minutes! What a joke! Surely speakers should be able to say what they want to say within a time allocation appropriate to the level of their concerns. Or is the way “to be heard” achieved by lobbying individual councillors. Or belonging to a particular clique/”club” - or to continue to feel disenfranchised and frustrated by the process? Helen MacDonald Waimea Weekly Facebook comments: Fund-raiser ride for helicopter trust: “Saved my life when Tim picked me up off the highway in the chopper, straight to Nelson hospital. Thank you, guys. The crash was Christmas Eve, 5pm, Upper Moutere Highway. On my Buell. Tourist turned in front of me.” Russell Thomas

Students win nationwide writing competition Emily Beaumont They have a way with words, the year 3 and 4 students of Hope School, and now their talent has been recognised on the national stage. The Room 2 students won their year group’s Book Review Competition held by Paper Plus and open to students across the country. It’s a great accolade for the school who instigated a school-wide ini-
tiative to improve writing performance by seeking professional development to advance children’s engagement in writing. “It’s so important for children to have good writing skills and this competition was great in the respect that it all had to be handwritten rather than on a computer,” says teacher Jacqui Wills. Awarded a prize pack including a HP5020 printer, the students continue to be enthused for writing.

Nelson Matters An inspiring part of my job at this time of year is attending our College prizegivings. I do not make every College, every year, due to clashes with each other and commitments in Parliament. But each year I come away buzzing with optimism for the future from the achievements of our young people and a deep respect for the work of our 600 teachers. The part I find most extraordinary with our schools of today is the diversity of their programmes. The opportunities stretch beyond the traditional academics and sports available to my generation. I see it in the arts and musical talents,
the sophistication of today’s trade and science programmes and in the huge range of sports. I love the way this diversity is allowing more of our young people to find the niche in which their talents can shine but such achievement also takes a huge commitment from teachers. An example is the Future Problem Solving programme. Last year the Nelson College Junior team won the nationals and went on to come fourth in the international competition in the US. The success largely rests on the dedication of an amazing teacher, Sarah Watts.
Another example of such dedication is Emma Hunter at Nelson College for Girls and her specialist Bronte House programme for girls at risk. I mention Sarah and Emma because I know them personally through my own family and have seen the sacrifices they make to give their pupils so much. They are just two out of hundreds of teachers in our region who make an extraordinary commitment. We also need to acknowledge that our teachers today are carrying a more complicated mix of challenges. We have more students with special needs. Technology is

making our youth more connected but this is also adding problems. Mental health issues are on the rise throughout the western world. We are rightly getting more support into schools to assist with these problems, but I am continuously impressed by how far our teachers are going to help. This positive rave about our Nelson teachers is not intended to take sides in the current dispute with the Government over pay. I do believe teachers deserve a healthy increase but I am no fan of the disruption and waste that goes with strikes. My hope is that common sense prevails and a
practical deal is done. My message as the school years comes to an end is one of gratitude. The excellence our schools and colleges provides is part of Nelson’s success story. Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls, Nayland, Waimea and Garin have different strengths but each are stunning secondary schools. We can also take pride in our network of good primary and intermediate schools. We need to give our school boards, Principals and mostly our teachers, a strong message of encouragement and thanks. They do a great job. Advt.

Trio of teens build winning e-bike Emily Beaumont The other competitors may have had a few years on them, but what our local teen boys lacked in age they made up for with tenacity. Waimea College year-9 students Michael Dewe and Finn Eger were joined by Garin’s Brennan Drach at EVolocity’s 2018 grand final in Christchurch on November 24 at the Air Force Museum. The grand final is the culmination of a year’s work which sees the secondary students design, build and compete in electric vehicles. “It’s such a fun thing and gives us something to do,” says Michael. The school teams build a vehicle, either a bike or with 3+ wheels, powered by a standard 350W electric motor, controller and two 12V gel cells. Innovation is encouraged as students strive to make their vehicle the fastest with the least drag, and able to cope with the demands of a tight street circuit. The innovation categories encourage teams to
build in object detection and mitigation features along with the measurement and display of key performance metrics. Finn was charged with writing most of the software and says it provided a great opportunity to learn more about electronics. Their bike impressively included sonic sensors for collision detection and had the standout feature of automatic gear changing. “I’ve really enjoyed the entire project,” says Finn. Category winners from schools all over New Zealand arrived in Christchurch to compete in drag racing, street circuit, economy runs challenges, as well as design and innovation, to determine the overall EVolocity winner for 2018. With eight categories vied for, the three local teens won two categories for innovation, and engineering and economy. “It was pretty good considering it was our first year and we weren’t really intending to win, we were just there to see what it was all about. It was a real bonus to win two categories,” Brennan Drach, Michael Dewe and Finn Eger show off the bike they built for the national secondary schools says Finn. EVolocity championships. summer in nelson
www.itson.co.nz
Summer in Nelson Tasman is officially here, with the launch of an action-packed programme of free or affordable events to keep locals and visitors entertained throughout the festive and holiday season. The summer events are a great way to highlight what the Nelson Tasman region has to offer, and a free guide was delivered to residents last week so they can note their calendars with an array of much-loved events. This Saturday the magical Lantern Celebration will be happening at the Centre of New Zealand. Bring along your homemade lantern (remember to use a battery-powered light to avoid fire risk) or grab a torch and the kids, Photo: Tim Cuff and head to the Botanic Reserve from 7pm. With a theme of Invention and Imagination, entertainment runs from 7-9pm on the ‘up’ track, with all kinds of creations, installations and music waiting to surprise and enchant walkers making their way up and at the top. From dark fall (9pm) the UV Light Show takes over to enhance the lantern procession on the ‘down’ track. Entertainment is also at Sir Stanley Whitehead Park from 7.30pm until dark fall. Summer Movies Al Fresco also begins this
weekend, with four pre-Christmas screenings, including Miracle on 34th Street, at the Botanical Reserve following the Lantern Celebration. The al fresco movie programme offers a musical, a drama, a dark comedy, - even a famous dog! Gather a group, a picnic, contemplate a blow-up couch and join others from 7:30pm to play giant board games before the movie begins. On the horizon, a New Year’s Eve countdown with three live bands and fireworks welcomes in 2019 in the city centre, followed in early January by Tahuna Summer Sounds: two Fridays of live music, giveaways and loads of interactive beach games and challenges. Plus there’s so much more throughout Nelson Tasman through to the end of March, with the annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic, live music from ska to jazz to chamber music, the Nelson Buskers Festival, market days, car and horse racing, International cricket, guided walks and beach carnival days all featured in this year’s programme to encourage the community to come together. If you don’t already have a programme see www.summererevents.nz, or www.itson.co.nz. Business Update. Adv.

St Alban’s Anglican Church has just celebrated 150 years since being built and organiser and retired minister Fergus Capie couldn’t be more pleased with how the weekend went. Amongst many parishioners young and old, Saturday’s service was also attended by current Bishop of Nelson, Rt. Revd Richard Ellena, mayor of the Tasman district, Richard Kempthorne, and director of Suter Gallery, Julie Catchpole. “It was a lovely

weekend. On Saturday it was standing room only. We had a nice generational balance portrayed with art from the children of Appleby School and photos of Bishop Suter and his wife who donated the church.” “It was great for the congregation, which has now grown somewhat older, to see a representation of the future of the church with the school children’s involvement.” Built in 1868 and consecrated by the Bishop of Nelson, the Rt. Revd Andrew Burn Suter, St Alban’s is one of the old-
est remaining churches on the Waimea Plains. A typical example of a New Zealand country church of that period, the church has undergone no major alterations since its construction, its originality adding to the charm. “It is easy for a tiny country church to feel a bit vunerable in this day and age. We have been under the threat of closure in the past. So to have that sense of confidence, of celebrating 150 years, with everyone who attended - it was wonderful.”
Runners head down Collingwood St towards the Maitai River walkway at the start of the race. Photo: Supplied.
Sun beats down on runners Runners and walkers appreciated having trees shading them from the heat of the sun for their 8km race on the Maitai River track on Saturday. This was an out and back course with the temptation to jump in the river and join the many other people who were cooling off in it. Donald Hilson was the fastest over the course, finishing in 29.44 mins with Dan Busch a
minute behind him. Katie Malthus was the first woman, only seconds ahead of Klaartje Van Schie. Don Bates led the walkers home with Ian Courtenay in second place, while the first woman was Gillian MacDougall followed by Claire McKenzie a minute behind her. Wednesday 5th December was the fourth of the Waimea Harrier Eddyline 5km races, this time along the Maple-Saxton
Course, which is a favourite with many of the runners and walkers. Looking over the results of the series so far it is great to see athletes improving their times over each of the 3 courses. One runner who stands out in this regard is Aimee Burnard, who has competed in all the runs and has worked hard to get her time down to 23.54mins; a great achievement!

The Tasman Men’s sevens side has backed up its team of the year status as they completed a three peat at the regional qualifiers. Tasman went through the Timaru tournament unbeaten to claim the Tofa Shield for the third year in a row and book its spot in the nationals. Fresh off leading Stoke to a Motueka Sevens title, the dynamic Sam Chamberlain led the side to victory over southern rivals Otago, Southland, Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and Canterbury. Sam says they went there to win it and remain undefeated. “We did that and are extremely happy as a group to achieve that goal and make it three in a row.” He credits coach Sam Gibbens for creating a quality team culture with a lot of new faces in the squad. “We had 12 players who could all do a job.” Sam says Central’s Timoci Tavatavanawai (Jimmy) was outstanding all tournament while Jesse Pitman’s experience was invaluable. He says Stein Schreiber, in his first tournament, was another standout. Leading from the front, Sam dotted down four times at the weekend to lead the try scoring charts with Timoci and Te

“It was a see-saw affair, they came back and the boys had to show a lot to get up, we scored early and then they put us on the back foot a bit and starved us of possession. Tasman held on for a 19-10 win.
“We got back in it and got the job done, it’s always good to beat Canterbury.” Tasman then met Otago in its final game. “We still had to beat Otago to win
it outright, so it was effectively like a final.” Tasman took the win 36-10. The side now switches focus to the nationals in Tauranga this weekend.

After four races in the Port Nelson Sea Swim Series, Luke Kelly and Alec Swan are locked together at the top of the men’s points table, with two wins each. Luke, 20, is last season’s series winner, while Alec is the 15-year-old challenger proving more than a handful to contain. Last Thursday’s 1100m swim was over a long triangle from the Nelson Yacht Club ramp, heading south against the tide for 500m, before a short leg across to the ‘dolphin’ navigation marker and a return to the final offshore mark, a small boat moored 40m from shore. As usual at the start, everyone was seeking to get behind a fast pair of feet to benefit from the drafting effect. Luke, Hayden Squance and Terry Bone took on the lead role, with a large group tucked in behind. At the first mark, Alec drew alongside, swimming with Luke to the dolphin, while the bunch stayed largely intact behind. Luke made his move on the final leg of 400m, but had Alec and Bendi Kepess right on his toes as they rounded the offshore mark for the sprint to the finish. Slightly confusing at the end

What’s worth waiting for? so that when your goal is finally realised you don’t undervalue it.
For my grandparents’ generation, expensive items were unable to be purchased on credit cards or hire purchase. Items were saved for and highly valued, often being passed down as heirlooms to younger generations. And no matter who you are, babies take 9 months to arrive. And it’s a good thing too, as you need time to prepare for the huge change in lifestyle that babies bring.
Winner Luke Kelly was chased to the finish by a large group of swimmers. Photo: Ruth Leckey. was the mooring of a second small boat near the finish during the race, causing a couple of swimmers to go astray in their navigation. Luke held on for the win in 13 minutes 28 seconds from Alec (13.32), Bendi (13.34) and Fergus Drummond (13.44) Abbey Smale (13.51) caused an upset in the women’s field, coming in fifth ahead of Squance (13.57), Bone (14.10), women’s series leader Sierra Thomas (14.23), Oxford Bayley (14.30) and tenth placed Matthew Hansen (14.34). After winning gold in the national series race in Bay of Islands the previous weekend, M50-59 swimmer Hamish Neill continued his good form
in 14min 38sec. Sophie Alexander (14.44), Ruby-Lou Stuart (15.23), Flossie Van Dyke (15.49) and Christina Harris (15.50) were the next women to finish. A total of 115 swimmers finished the event, while another 30 took on the shorter 500m race. Alexandra Grenfell made her second appearance of the season, taking her first win ahead of Brooke Swan, Hannah Hobbs, Mia Langley, Caitlin Alexander and Edward Swain. Swimming continues every Thursday evening in Nelson until March, with many swimmers making frequent trips around the country for Banana Boat Ocean Swim events.
Who likes to wait for things? Seriously, if I can’t get what I want, and I can’t have it when I want it then I’m thinking I’ll take my business elsewhere. Waiting is for suckers or people who haven’t figured out the system yet. Well… a little bit of patience can be admirable. We have to cheerfully wait a few minutes for our coffee, or stoically endure a queue at the airport. Of course sometimes we can’t avoid it. Like when you go to order fish and chips in Motueka on a public holiday. There’s only one place open, and everyone in the area is getting dinner. While you’re waiting for your order you could even whip out your phone and buy that thing you always wanted. No need to wait for the public holiday to be over for the shops to open again, sweet as! No, we don’t really do waiting these days do we? But there is another sort of waiting. There are times when the thing you are waiting for is so precious that it requires time for anticipation and preparation. Sometimes you need waiting time

WEDNESDAY 12 December 2018
This period in the church’s year— just before Christmas — is known as Advent. It’s the thing that advent calenders measured before we decided that we couldn’t wait for Christmas to get our chocolate hit. Advent is all about waiting. It reminds us of the long period of waiting for the promised Messiah that the Jewish nation endured. Advent is all about slowing down and taking a break from the ceaseless noise and activity. It’s a time to reflect on the wait for something precious. We all like Christmas, and it’s a temptation for it to seep earlier and earlier into our year. Especially if it helps sell mince pies and santa hats. But we need time to wait too. This season, why not find time to step off the treadmill, sit quietly and reflect on the things that are precious. The things that are worth waiting for. Church on the Hill is open between 7:00—9:30 pm from 17-22 December with Christmas lights and carol music for those who wish to take a quiet moment away from the busyness of the season. — Karl Summerfield, parishioner

Out on the water Dominik Berghamer The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club’s competition picked up a lot of speed over the last month with the snapper returning into the bay. They are still around in large numbers and some impressive catches have been entered by the club members. They will go off the bite shortly to spawn, so best to get out there while they are still in the mood. The location is not really important right now, they are everywhere, from the shallows to the deeper water in the middle of the bay. Get out as early (or late) as possible, the early morning and late evening hours provide the best fishing, especially when combined with a fast-running current. Use lots of burley and tie it to your anchor rope if fishing deeper waters. Be quiet, snapper are very shy fish and hate noise of any kind. Aluminium hulls have a tendency to resonate well under water so keep all walking, knocking and rattling to a minimum, especially in shallow water. Smaller boats have an advantage there, some of our club members even use jetskis. Stray lines and flasher rigs caught a lot of fish over the last weeks but small jigs and soft baits work well, too. When the snapper are hungry they will take almost any bait but squid, pilchards and shrimp tails seem to be favourites. There are still lots of sharks between the snapper but we get

Be careful if you decide to bring a large one (they grow up to 50lb) on board, they have sharp teeth and strong tails and can cause some serious damage. The Dawnbreakers committee members are already busy preparing for this season’s Snapper Cup which will take place in early March, find more info on www.dawnbreakers.co.nz or on facebook. Tight lines!

Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway hosted the South Island Street Stock on Saturday, December 8. The local Tasman Thunder team cruised to win over the Greymouth Grizzlies, but that was the only highlight for the local drivers as the other three weekend titles went south to Christchurch. The club hosted the eventful evening, which included open club championships for the Stock cars and Super Stocks, which made for a full pit with plenty of visiting drivers and a great night’s racing. The teams win for Tasman Thunder was not made easy, with Levi Collier not making it out of the pits and Keightley Teece left stranded in turn three with both axles broken, but the early lead taken by John Everett was never challenged as Hamish Carter and Dylan Clarke took to the Greymouth drivers. The Super Stocks saw the re-
turn of Nick Fowler piloting the Harwood machine while Ian Clayworth jumped into Trevor Lineham’s car after Trevor suffered a hand injury in the opening heat. But the night was dominated by Asher Rees (who won his NZ stock car title here in 2015) winning all three heats showing he will be at short odds at the NZ title and GP here in Nelson in January. Final result saw 126c Asher Rees take first place, 48n Brett Nicholls in second and Alex Hill in third. The Stock cars lined up with nearly 25 cars from Christchurch, Blenheim, Greymouth and Nelson. A consistent drive from 991c Harley Robb saw him take out the club title from Blenheim’s 77e Scott Alexander and his older brother 191gm Dylan Robb, who was representing Greymouth. Ryan Musgrove won the first qualifying heat in the South Island Street Stock but found plenty of attention in the finals as the block cars held up the local speedsters. A few tangles amongst the lo-
cal cars didn’t help their cause as they were out-paced by the Canterbury cars. Shannon Marr was left parked on the wall in heat two as the racing got quicker. In the end it was a Christchurch podium with NZ GP champion John Leslie winning his first South Island title from Daniel McNally and Dave McSherry. The Production saloons ran round two of their club champs with a huge field of visiting drivers making for some good racing. Once again it was two drivers from Canterbury that stole the show. 3nz Matt Sherlock winning the feature from David Filius with a huge drive by Pam Nixon to come home in third. Matt leads the title race but will need to return for round three to claim the trophy. Santa might be bringing a sack full of race parts for some drivers for Christmas as many head away to chase NZ titles over the holiday season. A meeting on the 29th of December is the final meeting before the NZ GP Super Stock title here on the 11/12th of January.

Bateup Road widening: Christmas work shutdown Work on the widening of Bateup Road, Richmond, will take a break over the Christmas period to reduce disruption to residents and the public over the holiday season. The project is to widen the road and provide a shared walkway/cycleway path to cater for increasing volumes of vehicle, cycle and pedestrian traffic from new subdivisions and a new supermarket planned for the area. It includes upgrades to water and stormwater infrastructure for the growing population in this part of Richmond. Construction will stop between Friday 21 December and Monday 7 January. We hope to reopen the road to two lanes over that time, but will assess whether we can ensure pedestrian and motorist safety before making a final decision. Gemma Thomas and David Ollis at the Westland Car Club rally sprint over the weekend. Hampden Hotel in Murchison hosted the sprint on December 1. A total of 32 cars entered the 10km sprint and long-time race sponsor Leigh Knowles says it was a fantastic day. “They are an awesome group of people, you are guaranteed a really good night with that bunch, they are a really passionate crew.” Leigh says it is a great fund-raising event for the community, “it is a good event to sponsor and all proceeds from the event go to the Murchison Kindergarten.” First started six years ago by Graham Ferguson and Kevin Lynch, the event involves participants from the Nelson Tasman region, Westland, Marlborough and Christchurch. Graham managed to take home the winning trophy in the Class 3, Open 2wd, section of the race with a time of 8.36 minutes. Brad Harris won the winners trophy overall with a time of 8.11. Jono Taylor won the the Class 1, 0-1300cc, section with a time of 9.38 and Jonty Brensell won the Class 2, 1301–1600cc, section with a time of 8.49. Class 4, Open 4wd, was won by Alan Cottingham with a time of 8.28 and Class 5, E Class, was won by Brendon Hart with a time of 8.31.
