Rays Way resident Fritz Mann says the reseal job on his street has been ‘botched’. Photo: Andrew Board.

Residents of a Richmond street are angry after a resealing job turned Rays Way into a “pot-holed mess” that’s resulted in tar and roading chip being smeared over the footpaths and driveways. Before Christmas, the Tasman District Council contracted Fulton Hogan to resurface Rays Way as part of council’s resealing programme but residents say they have been left with a sticky tar-covered mess and they are not happy. Disgruntled resident Fritz Mann says the resealing is “a botched job” that is “unsatisfactory” and he wants council to fix “the bloody big mess”. “It’s just a bit of tar with some stones on it, that’s all it is, it’s not asphalt.” He says all the residents thought that it was a substandard reseal from the beginning but were hoping the tar would harden and the chip would settle down. “After four months, it’s still sticky and messy. The grit is still loose and it’s not getting any better. “We’re all in a nice area and our properties are really getting abused by all the tar and the grit. My garage is full of rubbish and asphalt, the mats in my car are full of tar and it keeps getting into the house.”

Maling to stand for mayor Residents unhappy with road FROM PAGE 1 adequate storm water; looking after the environment, in particular the rivers; supporting the proposed Southern Link road in Nelson. “Affordability of rates is a key issue and that was brought home to me last year when I visited a client with my insurance business. They’re earning good money but they’re looking at retiring and they have a property in rural Richmond but their rates are $4000 a year, or $80 a week. When they go on a pension as a couple, that’s a big portion of their pension, so they will have to move to reduce their rates. Now you should be able to stay in our own home when you retire and not have to move because the rates are too dear.” Kit is a big supporter of the proposed Waimea Commu-

nity Dam and says he would continue that support if elected. He says the key to making it affordable is securing financial support from the government. So far, three candidates have confirmed their intention to stand for mayor: Richard Kempthorne, Kit Maling and Maxwell Clark. Richard says Kit’s criticisms of him are wide of the mark. “I’ve been clear for the past three or four years about rates and this year we had a one per cent rate increase and reduced debt. On the dam, council has been clear on its funding, now we need the Waimea Community Dam Company to confirm their funding. “As far as being a nice guy, yep, and I intend to stay that way. As for not being tough enough, I don’t agree with that at all.”

FROM PAGE 1 Another resident, Bill Fergie, who is a builder, says he is “sick of having to clean up the mess”. “We’ve got a marble front entranceway and we’re forever getting the turps out and wiping the tar it off. The overspray never hardens properly so your tyre picks it up and in one rotation starts splodging it all over the drive. “We’re forever having to sweep out and clean out our garages. We’ve had it in our carpets and cars and everything, it’s been a real nuisance.” All seven residents of Rays Way say they are unhappy with the job and have tried to contact council about the issue but Fritz says “no one has been able to get anywhere with council staff.” “As far as they are concerned, it’s a marvellous job, it’ll settle down and there is no problem. But it’s been four months and we haven’t got anywhere with the council or

the road.” However, council transportation engineer Gary Clark is confident the reseal will settle down and if it doesn’t they will “send Fulton Hogan out to fix it.” He says the contractors used an emulsion to reseal Rays Way which is “very cost effective” and he doesn’t expect it to result in any long-term problems. “The road was part of our reseal programme and we identified that road as needing some work,” Gary says. “Our sealing guys went out and had a look and asked Fulton Hogan what was sufficient to do the job and we have taken the most cost effective option - we don’t gold-plate our roads because we want to manage our ratepayers money carefully. “The surface we put down there is called an emulsion and it’s an alternative to other methods. It is not expensive but it is very robust. - it does the job it is designed to do which is move water off the road.”

New apprentice to get free lunch too

Andrew Board As if starting a new job wasn’t good enough, the package for one local apprentice builder just keeps getting better. Two weeks ago, builder Andrew Martin put out the call for an apprentice to work for his small company, via a story in Nelson Weekly. Mitre 10 Mega then jumped on board to help Andrew’s new employee by donating a brand new tool belt and tools worth $400 for whoever got the job. And now Subway Richmond has also joined in on the fun,

offering a voucher so the new apprentice won’t have to worry about lunch for the first month or so, either. Subway Richmond’s franchise co-owner Rob Hambrook says their business believes in being part of the community and they are happy to help Andrew find a new apprentice. “Any business that takes on apprentices is doing a great job for the community, so we’re more than happy to support this initiative,” Rob says. “I’m sure the new apprentice will enjoy getting a free lunch from us as well.”

So far, around 70 applications have been sent in and Andrew says he’s delighted with the response. “Obviously, there have been an overwhelming number of people and that’s good to have a good number to choose from.” He says he’s getting plenty of people asking him about the job. “Everyone keeps asking me about it and definitely a lot of people have seen it.” Applications close at 5pm Thursday, April 14. Warriors get dirty at Happy Valley Warriors of all shapes and sizes had to run, army crawl under barbed wire, climb walls, balance along logs, carry sandbags and monkey bar their way through the muddy Wairua Warrior course on Saturday morning. The obstacle race wound through the river and up the looming hills

at the Happy Valley Adventure Park, with 6km, 12km and 12km elite courses featuring over 20 obstacles. Four hundred and forty racers took part, with officials dishing out burpee penalties to racers who failed to complete the obstacles correctly.

With the fastest time of the day, and in his first obstacle race, was Wakefield’s Ethan Helliwell, completing the 12km elite course in 1:36:37. “It was more challenging than I expected and it over-met my expectations, the atmosphere was wicked, and it was an extreme amount of fun. “I wasn’t expecting to win because there were people from out of town who had done that sort of thing before, but I was really stoked.” Also making waves on the course was wheelchairbound David Trotter who featured in the Nelson Weekly two months ago on a mission to raise funds for an all-terrain wheelchair that would enable him to complete the race with the help of his team-mates. David and his teammates Simon Topp, Seija McIntosh, Jay Blazek, Jesse Clifton and Greg Witika pushed and pulled his wheelchair under, over and through the muddy 6km course. Teammate, organiser and trainer Greg Witika says the group came in at a good three hours and 40 seconds but it wasn’t about the time, it was about making a moment. “David went exceptionally well, he wanted to try everything we came up to. He was on an absolute high, he’s just grinning from ear to ear and he’s in that moment of what do I do now, where to next? “Everyone out on the course who came past was wishing David all

the best and giving him high-fives, he was stealing kisses as much as he could, it was brilliant.” Greg says David’s last obstacle, an A frame, was probably the most special. “That was the obstacle he really wanted to try 12 months ago so it was a really cool moment, and then for him to walk that last 20 metres to the finish line was really special. “Those are the moments that you can’t buy or create, they just sort of happen and we were just lucky to be there and experience it because it’s things like that that create memories.”

Richie keen to take on another Godzone Simon Bloomberg World champion adventure racer Nathan Fa’avae wouldn’t be surprised if the World Cupwinning All Black captain Richie McCaw puts his body on the line again next year and enters the Godzone Adventure Race in Queenstown. Richie was the star of this year’s Godzone race, attracting a big following as he trekked, mountainbiked, kayaked and rafted around the Tasman district with his Cure Kids team-mates.

Although the All Black legend looked like he’d just spent two days at the bottom of a Springbok ruck when he finished Godzone in Kaiteriteri on Thursday, Nathan thinks Richie will be back for more punishment next year. “I was speaking to Richie and Adam [Fairmaid], one of the event organisers, afterwards and Richie said he was definitely open to doing one again,” Nathan says. “I think Richie wants to fill the gap after rugby and stay fit and active and enjoy the outdoors

so adventure racing would tick those boxes. Nathan says Richie’s presence gave the race a high profile and was good exposure for the event, sport and the Tasman district. “The media coverage for Godzone has always been relatively high but this year Richie turned a switch on and said to a whole lot of people ‘hey have a look at what’s going on here’. “Once people got engaged, they realised there was this really amazing event going on and they stayed with it.”

Keen cyclists and walkers of all ages and abilities are invited to be among the first to experience the journey through Spooners Tunnel at its opening this Sunday. The official opening of the tunnel as part of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail will take place at 11am with a blessing, followed by a ride or walk through the tunnel. Tasman district mayor Richard Kempthorne says the opening of the newest section of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail is an exciting opportunity for people to experience a part of the region’s history. “Construction on Spooners Tunnel began in 1873 and it was used by trains running between Nelson and Kawatiri up until 1955 when the line was dismantled,” Richard says. “Now it will open to cyclists as part of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail. “I’m sure its history, as well as the experience of riding through nearly 1.4 kilometres of unlit tunnel – which is the longest tunnel open to cyclists in the southern hemisphere – will be a huge draw card for locals cyclists and visitors,” he says. Nelson Tasman Cycle Trust chair Gillian Wratt says the tunnel is part of the history of many families still living in the area, whose ancestors were involved with building it and the associated Nelson to Glenhope railway line. “The Great Taste Trail enables cyclists and walkers to explore our region’s heritage and culture in more detail,” Gillian says. “Thank you to our loyal supporters in helping us realise the vision of building the next stage of the trail. “Having Spooners Tunnel open means we are closer to completing the 175km of trail from Nelson that showcases our region’s food, culture, land and way of life.” Those wishing to participate in Sunday’s opening are invited to park at the Belgrove Tavern on State Highway 6 and take one of the shuttles that will transport people and bikes to the Tapawera end of the tunnel. Shuttles will run from 10am. The tunnel is not lit, so bike lights and a torch are essential. See the Facebook event, Spooners Tunnel Opening – Tasman’s Great Taste Trail, for updates about the event that will be posted between now and the opening weekend.

Good company and a chance to ‘get out of his comfort zone’ is what keeps local man Shane Torrence volunteering with Nelson Presbyterian support, and the heavily-tattooed helper has been dubbed a “volunteer extraordinaire” by his colleagues. After losing his legs and some of his sight to Type 1 diabetes, Shane was unable to continue his job as a painter and decorator – so he decided to become a volunteer and hasn’t looked back since. Shane said that, initially, he was turned away from one volunteer group because of his tattoos and shaved head. “They didn’t have a place for me,” says Shane. “People take me differently because of my appearance.” But then someone suggested Presbyterian Support, and Day Services Manager Trish Armstrong decided to give him a chance. He has now been there for four-and-a-half years and says he will be there “until they tell me to bugger off.” As a volunteer for Enliven Positive Aging Services, Shane helps out with the Totara programme – a day club where frail or isolated people can get

He is also a paid part-time employee, working in the kitchen for three lunch periods a week. “At first, I was completely out of my comfort zone, but the people were so friendly, welcoming and accepting. I get on with them all very well,”

says Shane. “It’s funny, I’m just over 50 and the ladies are just over 70, but they have such a great sense of humour and we always have a laugh together. I think I’m the only one who can get away with tattoos and looks like I do - they take me as a totally different person.” Shane says if he wasn’t volunteering at Presbyterian Support, he’s not sure what he would be doing. “But this keeps me busy and helps with my attitude towards life.”

Wade Puklowski has won the Nelson regional final of the Certified Builders Carpentry Apprentice Challenge. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Wade nails top apprentice award

Coman Construction building apprentice Wade Puklowski is the Certified Builders Carpentry Apprentice Challenge Nelson regional champion, after winning the event at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology last Friday. This year, the challenge saw apprentices from across Nelson and Tasman build children’s playhouses, with the final playhouses destined for play centres, kindergartens, crèches and other early childcare providers in the community. Wade, 23, who is in the third year of his apprenticeship with Coman Construction, competed against five other apprentices to build the winning playhouse within a set timeframe. The challenge covered all aspects of technical building, with apprentices judged on workmanship, trade skills and time management by a panel of experienced builders, who also gave the final playhouses the tick of approval. Wade says he is delighted to win the regional final and is looking forward to representing Nelson-Tasman in the national final at the Certified Builders Annual Conference in Wellington on May 26-28. Wade says he has always been interested in becoming a builder although it took him a few years to start his apprenticeship. “My grandfather John was a builder so I was always quite interested in it,” Wade says. “But I didn’t get into it straight away because I had

a shoulder operation when I left Nayland College and then I worked in Bunnings for a few years. “Then I decided to do an apprenticeship after seeing all the builders coming in to get supplies at Bunnings. “It’s a good job - I really enjoy seeing the results of your work at the end of every day, you know you have accomplished something.” Certified Builders Chief Executive, Grant Florence, says a major focus for Certified Builders is fostering more quality apprentices and so he is pleased to see some of the talent coming through at our apprentice challenges. “Holding regional events also gives Certified Builders members an opportunity to give back to their local communities by donating the completed playhouses to local early childcare providers,” he says. “It’s fitting that potential future generations of builders should benefit from the hard work and skills of today’s apprentices, given qualified builders are vital to the future of our country.” The Certified Builders Carpentry Apprentice Challenge in Nelson is one of 12 events being held across New Zealand in March and April. It is run by Certified Builders and its Industry Training Association, in conjunction with Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. The national winner will take away prizes including trade-quality tools and an Outward Bound scholarship.

Nelson choir to perform at Carnegie Hall Jessie Johnston New York’s Carnegie Hall is the dream gig for any musician and a reality for the Nelson Civic Choir. Last year, in October, the choir performed a piece by living composer Sir Karl Jenkins called The Armed Man – A mass for peace. Because it contained a Muslim call to prayer, they were unable to perform it in the Nelson Cathedral, which drew national attention and was even picked up by press in the UK. As a result, their name was in the public eye and, along with many choirs from around the world, they were contacted by New York and asked to audition for a chance to sing in the premier of a new piece written by Jenkins. “The first thing was I sent an email to the committee and I said “I have been asked to send a tape, shall we do it?” and they said “why not, we can always try”, but we hadn’t dreamt we would be chosen because they auditioned all over the world. So when a week later we got an email saying 'congratulations, you are invited,' we were over the moon, then, of course, it started sinking in that it would cost a lot of money,” says choir member, Wim Oosterhoff. The piece is being written for choir and orchestra and will involve around 400 people. “Actually the composer is still working on it, we expect him to complete it in about July or August, then we will get the music and start rehearsing here, then we have five days rehearsal in New York to perform it in Carnegie Hall on January 15, 2017,” says Wim. The piece is to commemorate a huge mine disaster in Wales, “which, of course, resonates with Pike River mine here,” says Wim. With 30 choir members set to make the trip, Nelson Civic Choir is now working hard to raise a combined total of $150,000. Already they have made just under $10,000 from crowd funding and managed to get Trademe to waive all auction fees so they can keep all the profits of their sales. The group are doing sausage sizzles outside The Warehouse, are organising a silent art auction to be held in December, and a quiz night on Sept 5 at Speights Ale House. They will also be performing another piece by Karl Jenkins, called Stabat Mater, on August 5, at St John’s Church to practice for Carnegie Hall. To add even more excitement to their trip, a few weeks ago the group received an email

from Helen Clark who said she would try to attend the New York performance. Anyone who would like to help the Nelson Civic Choir reach Carnegie Hall, whether it’s donating an item to be sold on Trademe, or making a cash donation, can email the group at nelsonchoir@gmail.com, or visit their Facebook page, New York Welcomes Nelson. The group also intends to bring back a DVD of their performance in New York to share with those interested.

Poison drop at Brook: The lack of consultation by Nelson council over the poison drop in the Brook is consistent with the previous lack of public consultation. The original funding for the Sanctuary was not notified to the public as required under the Local Government Act. At least two Official Information Act requests to council for copies of the Sanctuary Business Plan were denied. This sort of behaviour by government at any level to thwart access to information, and to stop public participation in decisions that have a direct financial or other effect on the public, destroy the legitimacy of government. traffic and think, why is this happening? There must be a better way". All Stuart had to do was look out of his window and see all the other commuters driving their cars at peak time. He would have noticed that 99 per cent of them had only one person in them and the vast majority were coming from or going to the Tasman District. If we look at other "bigger" cities with worse than 12 to 15 minute delays at peak time, he would see that public transport plays a big part in reducing congestion. It is time to put on our "fact" glasses and see who is pushing for the SL and why, because it sure doesn't have anything to do with traffic congestion or supporting our CBD. When was the last time anyone saw a traffic jam of shoppers trying to get to town? And why is there hardly a problem when school is off? Or just follow the money and see who gains the most from a new SH being built. To build a road or not, that is the question? But first let's be honest about why we are doing it. Graeme O'Brien.

Weekly reporter survives Godzone race Simon Bloomberg When Nathan Sturrock emailed me about joining their Greenhorns team as a very late replacement for the Godzone Adventure Race, I had some serious reservations. For starters, the race was only two weeks away and I hadn't done any training. Other teams had been trekking, kayaking, rafting and mountainbiking thousands of kilometres over the last six months to prepare for the epic race through the Tasman district's backcountry, so how could I expect to survive the 490km journey? I hadn't even sat in a kayak for over two years. And even if I did last the distance, wouldn't I be way too slow for my three young teammates, Nathan and Lachlan Brownlee, both 19, and Rachel Baker, 21? I had visions of Nathan carrying my pack as Lachlan pushed me up a hill with Rachel walking behind muttering something about 'a pathetic old man'. I was also concerned about the team dynamics, which is always a big part of expedition races. At 58, I was almost older than all three of them put together, so what the heck would we talk about during the long treks through the night - certainly not Justin Bieber. I hate Justin Bieber. But Nathan was desperate. Their fourth team-mate had been injured and I'm sure they'd phoned just about everyone who owned a mountainbike to try and get a replacement before they finally got to me. I was their last hope. It was either me or they'd have to pull

And then, finally, we kayaked across glassy seas to the finish line at Kaiteriteri and after racing non-stop for 31 hours, gratefully received a pie and cold beer from race organisers. And yes, they were the best pie and beer I'd ever had. For the record, the Godzone Pure race was won by Team Yealands

Family Wines featuring Nelson's Dan Busch in three days 12 hours 44 minutes with Team Swordfox, featuring Ash and Naomi Whitehead and Brent Edwards, second in three days 16 hours 55 minutes. Team Silky's Vicky Shelling, John Harris, Stephen Busby and Callum Irvine were the fastest mixed team in the slightly shorter Godzone Pursuit finishing in three days 22 hours eight minutes. Greenhorns were fourth.

Team-mates Lachlan Brownlee and Rachel Baker are in the background. Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport. out, so after getting the all clear from my family, work and cat, who I knew would miss me the most, I said ‘yes’. And surprisingly, over the four days, two hours and 27 minutes it took us to complete the race, I only regretted that decision once. It was on the first night when it was so cold I only managed half an hour sleep on the tops after climbing Ben Nevis. It was freezing, and I shivered uncontrollably for three hours as I listened to Nathan and Lachlan snoring next to me. I couldn't wait to get up at 6am and resume our 52km trek through the Red Hills to St Arnaud. But the rest of the race was amazing. We'd had a cool kayak from Kaiteriteri to Rabbit Island and a fun mountainbike along the Great Taste Trail and through the familiar tracks in Silvan Forest into the Aniseed Valley and onto the Wairoa Gorge. The ride through the Porika Track to Lake Rotoroa and raft down

the Matakitaki River were also race highlights - a perfect blend of great scenery and exhilarating high speed downhills and white water rapids. Yeehah! The rafting stage was also a highlight for another reason. After having the worst sleep of my life on the first night of the race, I had my best sleep ever on the third night when I had nine blissful hours snoring my head off in a raft on the banks of the Matakitaki. After that, we charged to the finish, only stopping at transitions for food supplied by our dedicated support crew as we biked up the Owen Valley, trekked over the Owen Range and got back on our bikes for the 140km stage from Tui to Totaranui via the Takaka Hill and Rameka Track. The only speed bumps on these stages were a bull that had escaped from its paddock that sent us scurrying to safety up a bank and a desperate, skidding stop for a rare Powelliphanta snail

Mapua Easter Fair, Wednesday, March 30: The Mapua Easter Fair was once again a successful event for the Mapua community. Although organisers are still waiting for the last of the money to come in, they say it’s looking as though the fair managed to raise around $60,000. The fair is organised by The Mapua Easter Fair Charitable Trust which raises money for both Mapua School and the Mapua playcentre. Ethan Bruce, Wednesday, March 23: It’s unclear whether Ethan Bruce will be able to take part in the annual Fire Fighters Sky Tower Stair Challenge in May after he broke his leg in two places during the Rainbow Rage. Ethan was competing to raise money for Leukemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand, which is the charity for the Sky Tower stair challenge. His participation in the stair challenge will depend on his recovery time. So far Ethan has raised $2000 for the cause, his goal being to break the $3000 mark. To support Ethan and donate to Leukaemia & Blood Cancer, visit firefightersclimb.org.nz, click “donate” and then select “Ethan Bruce”.

The first Wild Bean Cafe in

You’ll see all the familiar faces at BP Connect Richmond, as well as a couple of new ones. From left: Nathan, Darren, Lex, Shania, Anastasia, Pitria, Fiona and Karen.

BP Connect Richmond swung open its doors this morning, marking the first BP Connect Wild Bean Cafe to open in the Nelson region. The grand opening at 117 Queen St was held at 6.00am, with the first customer on the forecourt just ten seconds later and one million more customers expected through the doors over the next 12 months. BP Head of Retail Frank van Hattum said the company was excited to bring an upgraded offer into the area. “We always aim to make the BP customer experience better than they can get anywhere else and we invested here because we think the local community deserves the best. “BP won’t cut corners on quality – that applies to both our products and our service. We take pride in our quality products and our fantastic people. “It’s great that our new store enables us to bring additional employment opportunities to the area with up to 20 positions available, but it’s really fantastic to see a number of familiar faces transitioning across from the old store as well,” he said.

The 24-hour operation has wide lanes for easy access, ample parking, a carwash and four fuels across every pump; Unleaded 91, Premium 95, Ultimate 98 and Diesel. BP Connect Richmond customers can also benefit from BP’s brand new, best ever, dirt-busting BP Ultimate 98 fuel that was launched just last week after five years of research and testing. BP Ultimate fuel now contains ACTIVE technology, a unique formulation that is designed to actively fight dirt, protect against dirt build-up and help engines run as the manufacturer intended. “But it’s not just our quality fuel that sets us apart from the rest... With a Wild Bean Cafe offering comfortable seating, free WIFI, free newspapers to read while you are waiting and updated bathrooms, we’re providing a one-stop shop for locals,” said van Hattum. “Wild Bean Cafe is also the number one retailer of barista-made coffee in New Zealand and has been serving Fairtrade Certified coffee since 2008. “We want to share our great coffee with the people of Nelson so they can see, or rather

Lex Deans, Nathan Cooper (Retail Area Coordinator), Darren Coe (Area Manager), and Karen Marell (Store Manager) take a quick break to enjoy their Wild Bean Cafe Coffee.

Did you know that every Wild Bean Cafe coffee is guaranteed to satisfy? So if your coffee isn’t made just how you like it, they’ll make you another one for free.

ENJOY 10 CENTS PER LITRE DISCOUNT! the Nelson region is open taste, what all the fuss is about. “Our Richmond customers can also take home our used coffee grinds and use them in their gardens,” he said. The new BP Connect store will be added to the company’s national carwash program that recycled more than 70 million litres of carwash water in the past 12 months alone – an initiative that other retailers are yet to implement to this level or scale. BP has also invested in bright, energy efficient LED lighting to reduce the site’s power consumption and has installed heat pump technology that allows exhaust heat from air conditioning and refrigeration plants to be recycled and used to heat the building’s water, delivering a sustainable and cost-effective solution. As the lucky recipient of this year’s BP Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB), Nelson Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) was on-site for the grand opening today, showing off their brand new IRB and collecting donations. Club President Marcus Gardner said he was thrilled that the Club could be involved in the store opening and was extremely grateful for the new BP IRB because their

old one had been “pushed to its limit”. “We are involved in a lot of call-outs around the Nelson/Tasman region so IRBs really are an essential part of our lifesaving armoury,” he said. “Our old IRB has taken quite a battering over the years, so this new one will make a huge difference. “It really means a lot; not only to the club, but to the entire community and we wanted to bring it along today to show it off to locals because it’s as much theirs as it is ours. “BP has been a partner of Surf Life Saving New Zealand, and of our Club, for 48 years so it’s only fitting that we would be here to celebrate with them today. “I must admit, our Clubbies are pretty keen to test out their famous Wild Bean Cafe pies too,” Gardner said. BP 2go Haven Road is planned to undergo a similar transformation later in the year. BP has owned these sites for more than 25 years and said they needed significant investment to bring them up to scratch, so the company decided to invest a bit more and convert them to a full BP Connect offer.

Fiona Stickland, Shania Fenwick and Karen Marfell are all pumped up and ready to welcome customers to the new BP Connect on Queen Street.

Wild Bean Cafe team members Anastasia Deans and Pitria Johnston will offer much more than just quality barista made coffee – they’ve got a sumptuous range of meals and snacks on the menu too.

Don’t forget to pick up your Wild Bean Cafe key tag instore. Once you register it, not only will you get every sixth coffee FREE but you’ll also receive exclusive promotions and offers for Wild Bean Cafe purchases. This offer is available across the national Wild Bean Cafe network, so even if you’re away from home you can still access these great deals.

EXCLUSIVE OFFER FOR WAIMEA WEEKLY READERS! Purchase an Ultra Carwash for HALF PRICE and receive a FREE Wild Bean Cafe coffee* To redeem this great deal, simply surrender this clipping to a friendly BP staff member by 6pm on 18 April. *RRP of Ultra Carwash is $17.00. Proud supporters of the Mike Pero Nelson Giants

It's easy to start getting excited about the fortunes of the Mike Pero Nelson Giants 2016 season, but coach Tim Fanning insists the team itself is just taking the season one game at a time. The Giants blasted past the Hawkes Bay Hawks at the Trafalgar Centre on Saturday night and local basketball fans have plenty more action to come. This Saturday night the Giants play host to the Waitakere Super City Rangers, before an Anzac weekend double at the Trafalgar Centre, starting with the Southland Sharks on Thursday April 21 and then Canterbury Rams on April 25. Tim says he's happy with the start his team has had but is bracing for the toughest game yet, against the Rangers. "I think it will be the most difficult we've had so far this year. They're going to have Mika [Vukona] back and they've won three in a row. They are a team that, at the start of the year, was a favourite to win the championship, so it's going to

be a huge test for us on Saturday, but we're looking forward to it. We're looking forward to the challenge and we'll be ready for it." He says the feeling amongst the team is good after two straight home wins. "I think we have a really good balance in our roster, in terms of different guys who bring different skills. "The home court advantage for us is huge. We've talked about it, we want to defend our home court and the crowds have been great so far. We feel like we have a huge advantage by playing at home." In the win over the Hawks on Saturday, Tim was able to give some of his younger players plenty of court time and says it's invaluable to be able to do it. "Those guys have been working really, really

We offer fantastic entertainment for everyone including corporate functions, sports events and parties...

Back in my teen years in the 1980s, there was a popular show on TV called The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. The show featured a group of hyper-intelligent beings who demand to learn “the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything”. They ask a supercomputer called Deep Thought which was specially built for this purpose. It takes Deep Thought seven and a half million years to compute and check the answer, which turns out to be the number 42. The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, I think reflects the mind set of many people today. Life is just a random number - it has no purpose or meaning. The Bible however provides us with quite a different answer. The opening words of John’s Gospel tell us this - “in the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” (John 1:1–2) “Word” is the Greek term logos. Logos gives us words like logic and logistics and logarithms. It’s at the heart of all those words that end with “logy” like biology, psychology

and theology. Heraclitus, in the fifth century BC, used this word to refer to the principle of order and knowledge that governed all of reality. The Stoics used it to refer to “the divine fire, the soul of the universe.” Philo, a Jewish philosopher used it to refer to “the agent of creation.” But John goes further. This divine “word” is not an it but a he”: “The word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed his glory, the glory’s the one and only son from the father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14) We see it now, don’t we. All is revealed. This logos is none other than Jesus Christ, the very Son of God. The term “took up residence” can also be translated “to tabernacle.” The tabernacle was the place the Israelites met with God. John tells us Jesus is the new tabernacle. He is the place where flawed people can meet with a holy God. If you want to know the meaning of life, Jesus is your answer. If you want to find God, Jesus is the one to whom you go. Jesus gives meaning to a confused life. He gives hope to lost souls. Without him, there is no hope, no meaning and no life. Just confused existence.

Talented sportspeople selected for pathway programme Seven of the most talented young sportspeople in Nelson and Tasman have been selected for the regional Pathway to Podium programme designed to help them become the next generation of New Zealand sporting stars. Swimmers Sam McKenzie, Talya Harwood and Clara Foster, volleyballers Tane McDonald and Holly Chandler, basketballer Max Darling and hockey player Devon Stove have been chosen for the talent development programme run regionally by Sport Tasman in conjunction with Sport NZ and High Performance Sport NZ. Sam was named Sport Tasman Junior Sportsman of the Year in November for an outstanding 2015 which included winning gold and breaking a NZ age group record in the 100m freestyle at the Australian age groups championships as well as collecting a host of national titles and records. Talya is a national age group representative while Clara is a national age group champion and a member of the national junior team. Devon is in the national under-16 inline hockey team while Waimea College volleyballers Holly and Tane are both national under-19 beach volleyball representatives. Holly says the Pathway to Podium will be “very helpful’’ in preparing to step up to international competition. “To be able to meet other athletes and find out about things like nutrition and the psychology of competing will be really useful,’’ she says. Pathway to Podium regional coordinator Terri Willcocks says it is the first time the programme has been open to regional athletes from a wider range of sports. Previously it was restricted to those capable of winning medals at Commonwealth and Olympic Games, which meant it was mostly rowers who got picked from the top of the south region. “It’s great to get a mix of different sports and a mix of males and females,” Terri says. “The quality is excellent, with most of these athletes already performing well nationally and in some cases internationally.’’ Terri says one of the major selection criteria was that the athletes had to be or close to representing New Zealand at age group level. “We really looked for those with potential and a willingness to learn.’’

Next weekend’s Geraldine Hodgson tournament marks the beginning of Nelson Netball Centre’s 2016 season. The majority of clubs had their trials and selected their teams in February so players and coaches will be keen to get their season underway. And the Geraldine Hodgson Tournament, which is named after Nelson Netball’s lifetime supporter and patroness, provides the perfect start to the season. It is encouraging to see the increase in numbers of teams entered, from 35 last year to 54 this year. Senior teams have been split

into five grades, along with a collegiate and junior grade - teams will play three pool games on Saturday before going into cross-overs on Sunday. Six of the eight Premier teams have entered, with only Richmond and Suburban absent. Waimea College A will be keen to test themselves in the elite grade having gained promotion. Prices Pharmacy A look to be contenders as a top qualifier in one section, while Jacks OPD look likely in the second. A new club has been formed by Marist and their Black team will foot it in the A grade which will provide a challenge for them. While all teams would like to get their hands on the first piece of silver for the season, most will take the opportunity to test combinations and gel as a team. While some teams may have

had a couple of practice games, only Prices Pharmacy has competed in Netball Mainland’s Super Club competition played in Ashburton and Blenheim over two weekends in March. There will be a break for the school holidays before the season-proper begins. The Premier grade will begin with a series of shortened games on May 12, with the regular season beginning on May 19. All other grades will have a grading day on May 7 before beginning their competition on May 14. Grading day is a challenge as there are a phenomenal number of games to be played which pushes umpiring resources to the limit. Once the day is completed, the grading of the teams is handed to the competition’s committee. It is a huge undertaking as the committee works through

Waimea notch first win of the year Andrew Board

Waimea Old Boys secured its first win of 2016, with a hard-fought victory over Kahurangi in Motueka on Saturday. The 29-22 win comes on the back of a 70-point loss to Wanderers the week before and will give the club a massive lift as it progresses through its “development year”. Kahurangi started the better of the two sides, scoring the first try of the game but Star & Garter Waimea then went to work with tries coming from Jake McLachlan, Jeff Lepa and Bailey Scott before the half time break. Midfielder Connor Trathen scored Waimea’s fourth try shortly into the second half. Waimea co-coach Mark Milne says he was “well pleased” with the performance and the win. “It’s important, as we go through this phase, if you can nibble a win, it’s good for the confidence. All the hard work going in, it’s good to get a reward for it. That’s the key for a young group.” Kahurangi rested several of its key players against the previously winless Waimea but substituted them on at half time. “They obviously got a rev up at half time and dominated parts of the second half to come back

at us but in saying that we scored reasonably quickly after half time and stretched the lead and we were bloody unlucky not to score again.” Mark says it was the perfect turnaround from a heavy defeat the week before. “The boys were pretty happy, now doubt about that, but in saying that we haven’t been down. “So, after the game on Saturday it wasn’t over the top elation or anything like that, but it was an opportunity to sing our song for the first time this year.” This Saturday, Waimea are back at Jubilee Park, where it will host traditional rival Stoke. Mark says it will be another tough battle. “Jeez, it doesn’t get any easier. They will be gunning for us. They probably see us a good opportunity to get a victory. They have a reasonable squad this year too. They have a bit of firepower so it will be a ding-dong battle.” Mark says he is pretty keen for the team to “rectify” its last performance at Jubilee Park, against Wanderers. “It’s important to play well at home.” Waimea Old Boys v Stoke kicks off at Jubilee Park in Richmond at 3pm this Saturday.

Draw ‘felt like a win’ A 24-all draw against a high-flying Huia side “felt like a win” says Waimea Old Boys division two coach Wayne Bateman. Waimea has slowly been improving their performance and a hard-fought draw with the competition leaders has shown how far they’ve come since the start of the year. “It was unreal, we’re improving each game, we really stepped up. Huia have been thrashing everyone all year. To us that was a win,” says Wayne. “New guys are starting to gel together and guys are getting fitter. We can only get better.” Wayne says the forwards worked hard for the win, with Kane Hart in particular doing plenty of grunt work. “To me the forwards laid the

platform for the win with their pick-and-go’s and we went from there.” Winger Hetadaka Heitia scored a try as well as kicking three conversions and a penalty goal, while blindside flanker Pyrro Gardyne and first five Jason Ichon also scored a try apiece. Waimea face Stoke at Jubilee Park this Saturday and Wayne says Stoke will be another tough test. “They’ve been going pretty good, they are a young side so we will need to be up for it. But each game we’ve been stepping up and we need to step up again this weekend.” Waimea v Stoke is this Saturday at Jubilee Park from 1.15pm.

Local student in leadership role God’s vital role in their lives, and to stimulate their faith.”

Another important responsibility he sees is to maintain good effective contacts with the youth members’ parents, even formal reporting to them on occasions if desired about the group’s activities. He says he has been looking forward keenly to taking up the new role and describes his basic goal as “strengthening our young members’ relationship with Jesus” at weekly meetings.

Church on the Hill’s new Youth Leader, Antonio Sardella, brings a strongly supportive family background in the church and immense enthusiasm to the challenging responsibilities he is taking on. Now 23, he was born in Wales and came to New Zealand with his parents as a child. While continuing his own studies to become a primary school teacher, by a distance learning programme through Canterbury University, he is also a youth worker at Waimea College with a special interest in music. He has been involved with the church youth group for several years now and intends to build on the excellent work of the previous leader, Micah Did Dell. There are currently about 15 members in two groups, aged between 12 and 18, and Antonio hopes to see that number grow. “It’s an important next step after Sunday School, providing good Christian role models. We encourage the young people to learn more about the church and

While the groups’ regular activities involve social interaction and plenty of fun, there is clearly also a vital spiritual component. They provide a path that can lead to friendships and shared interests, combined with spiritual growth. Overall it’s seen as an introduction into the church that can mature into a lifetime of involvement for mutual benefit. The social aspect of the groups “might well include an occasional jam session,” he suggests. Antonio says he is fortunate to have the support of an established leadership group that includes Jared Altments, Paniah Adams-Martin, David Wasley and Kay Thomson as well as the Vicar, Rev. Susan Gill. “They’re an awesome team, more like a family really,” he says. Antonio’s own education involved being a pupil at St Paul’s School in Richmond, five years at Garin College and a two-year music diploma course at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. He has been a member of the Christian-based City of Light Youth Band as a bass guitarist for the past five years.

Helping our neighbours Sometimes random ideas are the best. In October last year the Anglican regional AGM was held in Westport. We saw first-hand how easy it would to be discouraged in the light of their economic downturn. “Let’s do something to help and encourage them” one delegate suggested. So the idea was born. On a Friday night in March this year eleven people from Church on the Hill headed off to paint St Peter’s Church in Granity. Our crew had varying skill levels, varying experience and varying personalities but one thing we held in common: a desire to show Jesus’ love to the Buller community. Interestingly most of our crew were over the age of seventy with a few younger ones in their late 50’s, early 60’s. Who said you are ever too old to make a difference?

of us contributed to the church services at St Johns in Westport itself. We were blessed with Buller hospitality as they put on a feed for us at lunchtime — including crayfish! To us it didn’t seem like a big thing — one weekend of fantastic fun in fact. But Dave, one of the Granity organisers, wrote to us, “A brilliant initiative Richmondites. You made a big job that looked hard to us into a reality — enjoyed meeting and working with you.” We came away tired but enthusiastic about our time and the hospitality and determination of the Buller folk.
