So while he’s busy loading his sleigh with presents and preparing his reindeer for the big trip around the globe, he needs someone to step up and take his place in his grotto at Richmond Mall. Mall manager Belinda DeClercq says the applicant needs to be “friendly, enjoy kids and happy to chat” and available every day from December 13-23. Santa’s even been so kind as to loan the Mall a spare outfit for the successful applicant to wear and there will be giveaways, lollies and sticker books provided to pass onto children. There’s no doubt that household bills are the scourge of the daily grind, so when a refund of some sort is available you think it would be seized. Yet Patrick Adamson, the Network Tasman Trust secretary, advises that consumers have thousands of dollars in unclaimed distribution cheques. On 1 December, 2017, Network Tasman Trust distributed to consumers 35,012 cheques

with a total value of $3,124,160. As of 28 May, 2018, approximately 2,000 cheques totalling $190,000 had not been cashed by consumers. The Trust is anxious to ensure that all receive their entitlement and Patrick urges consumers to present their cheques as soon as possible. Once cheques are six months old banks will not accept them, but the Trust will re-issue them

for up to five years from the original date of issue. The Trust is calling time on issuing cheques and any future distributions made by will be credited onto your power account. Tasman farmers need to rally together to stop the spread of the mycoplasma bovis outbreak, says Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor. The Government announced on Monday, May 28, that it plans to attempt to eradicate the cattle disease from New Zealand instead of manage it, in what it says is a move to protect the national herd and the future of the farming sector. This comes almost one year after the first confirmed case was notified to MPI in July 2017. It’s expected that the total number of cattle to be culled will exceed 140,000. An MPI spokesperson says there are currently no properties in Tasman or the West Coast that are actually infect-

ed, though Tasman has one property with a notice of direction and the West Coast two. Notices of Direction (NoDs) are issued to farms when an inspector or authorised person considers that movement of stock and other goods from a property poses a risk of spreading mycoplasma bovis. “This can be when animals from infected properties have been moved to that property, but testing has not yet taken place or results of testing are pending. NoDs are also issued when specific directions need to be given, for example to cull stock.” MPI is still not sure how the bacteria made it into the country and investigations are ongoing to confirm if the first

farm to show clinical signs was where the disease even originated. Damien O’Connor says that there have been some delays in containing the outbreak. “If anything, this will signal to farmers the value in keeping accurate records,” says Damien. Tapawera dairy farmer Philip Riley acknowledges that “it’s going to be devastating for the farmers affected by it”, but says the government has made the right decision. “They’ve got to have a crack at (eradicating) it.” If successful, New Zealand will be the first country in the world to do so and MPI says the welfare of both farmers and their animals is at the heart of the decision.

Wakefield resident Brian Duncan got a ‘neat surprise’ when he got a phone call from his friend Bob Croy to say that a ring he was given, and lost half a decade ago, was found at Brian’s parents’ old home by a metal detector. Ian Spriggs had enlisted the help of Stewart Gill and his metal detector to recover a set of keys, lost in the area, after clearing vines from the Duncan’s former property. The keys were retrieved, along with a signet ring marked with the initials BJD. Bob had stopped to say hi to Ian, and the two men showed him the ring. Student Georgie Martin was competing in her annual school crosscountry and came home 4th, and the filly in the Winter Festival Harness Races in Richmond. The harness races attracted more than 2500 people over the two days and festival goers on Friday were treated to a beautiful winter’s day. For filly Georgie Martin it was her first time running and she came home in 11th.

According to Marty Price, chairman and co-founder of Richmond District community patrol, Marty Gill is the perfect recipient for this months ‘Good Sort’ $100 Stihl shop Richmond voucher. Marty has nominated Mike for the active role he has always played in the patrol group. Mike and Marty, along with 3 others, co-founded the group, back in 2007. Mike took on the role of chairman in 2008 and has only recently stepped down in March of this year. Mike says the nomination was completely unexpected, “it is a very nice surprise.” He has spent the last 10 years being very heavily involved with the patrol, “it was pretty agricultural in the early days, but the support from the public and from Waimea Weekly has been great. I think it has made a big difference having the community patrol around. I couldn’t believe what was going on around the area in the early days. We still get the occasional thing

happen now, but not like it used to be.” There are 25 members in the patrol group, and Mike says, “we have a really great representation of people from 19 years old to their late 70’s, it’s a very diverse group from all walks of life. They are a good solid crew.” As well as the patrol group, Mike has also played his part on the committee for both Waverley St and Henley Kindy, is currently the secretary of Neighbourhood Support Waimea, treasurer of Richmond Community Patrol and is secretary of Community Patrol NZ Tasman District committee. “I enjoy it, they are all great people to work with and that’s what I like about our community patrol.” Marty says Mike has been made a Life Member of the patrol, due to all the hard work that he has done over the years. “Mike has always been very approachable and has led the group very well. He is always willing to to assist the community where and when required.”

Even the staunchest pedalpowered cyclists have become converted by the lure of e-bikes and now Ian Robinson of Morley Motorcycle and Marine is joining the dealers. “They’re seriously cool. I was very skeptical of e-bikes previously but then I rode one and decided these are cool,” says Ian. For 29 years Ian’s business has stocked new and used motocross, farm ATVs, sideby-side, trail and road bikes throughout the Honda range, alongside second-hand lines of Japanese brands including Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki. This month Ian extended his range to include Italian motorcycle manufacturer Benelli’s e-bikes, and they’re already proving popular with three sold in the first week and lots of customer interest. Waimea College students, teachers and volunteers have been working tirelessly to ensure a quality production, with everyone pulling together and putting in big hours for the show. Production manager Pauline Farley says, “the kids are getting really enthusiastic about it all. The entire cast, orchestra, technical crew and staff recently spent the weekend at Teapot Valley, rehearsing.” Volunteer and costume designer, Tracy Gibbs, has spent hundreds of hours sewing and sourcing costumes for the cast. They were part of the entire process, learning about the water coming from the sky when it rained, to hitting the roof and sliding down the roof and into the guttering and going down the drainpipe and into the barrel, to come out of the tap. We have a big sustainability focus, it is a big part of our culture.” The children are taught all about gardening and composting, the plants, the water and the sun. “The kids are our future,” says Karina, “it’s important to start instilling those beliefs of looking after

our planet now. This is the age where children learn so much. The whole purpose is the idea that you teach them now and as they grow up they know it is important. Our learning goes right down to the rubbish, keeping the gardens clean and sweeping the path.” For Lisa Selwyn, she thinks very highly of what the centre is trying to achieve, “I love the centre, it is such a family environment here, and their learnings and beliefs have pushed me to be aware of our environment as well. The outdoor area was a key point for me, it’s just brilliant.”

Waimea dominate at Takaka Squash Open Takaka’s brand new squash complex is fantasic. Late last year the club moved from their old and tired one court club into their shiny new facilities. As part of the new Takaka recreation centre, they now boast two modern courts and a booming membership. So it seemed right to support Takaka in their first squash tournament in their new building. HLS Waimea Old Boys Rugby Round Up Nelson 0 v WOBRFC Senior B 50 Saturday was all about getting back on the wagon for HLS Waimea Old Boys Division 2 team after two weeks off and a poor performance against Marist before that. They certainly did that with a very satisfactory 50-0 win in the away fixture. Waimea started very well, sticking to their structures and building pressure for a sustained 15 minute period. Strong running from Unga Penitani (Man of Match) and Adam Hahn put them hard into the 22 and a nice darting run from Tom Crosbie to dot down managed to turn the pressure into points and get them on the scoreboard. It wasn’t long after that when they were on the score board again. This time with a try to Ben Amberger with his first touch of the ball and an impressive individual sprint down the sideline, to take

them to 14-nil. The Waimea lads drifted out of the game for the next 20 minutes but luckily the defence held strong for them until the halftime break. With a wee tune-up and a bit of focus at half-time Waimea started the second half on fire and it was Ben Amberger again straight after the whistle, scampering round under the posts for a double. From then the Waimea boys pushed on with Tom Crosbie and Chris King steering the ship home comfortably. Wanders RFC Women’s 10 v Waimea Old Boys RFC Women’s 91 Waimea Ladies travelled to Brightwater to play local rivals Wanderers Ladies. Wanderers have worked well in getting a ladies team up and running and have been building in numbers throughout the season.

It was always going to be hard day for Wanderers playing against the more experienced Waimea team that have been led well by captain Stephanie Mitchell who, along with Tessa Hiller, Anna Bradley, Jaunita Thomson and Jessica Foster-Lawrence is currently training with the Mako ladies highperformance squad. Waimea asserted themselves by scoring an early try after just two minutes. Wanderers responded with some good passages of play but were held tryless by a staunch and committed Waimea defence. When Waimea gained possession, Wanderers defence stood firm and applied pressure that resulted in passes being forced by Waimea and lots of handling errors ensuing. The constant pressure by Waimea began to have an effect on Wanderers and soon gaps were created. Waimea started making lots of ground and tries began to flow.

At half-time Waimea led 43-0, both coaches spoke about swapping players but the Wanderers coach said he was pleased with his team’s commitment and effort. Straight from the kick off, Waimea scored again. Waimea’s coach made wholesale changes, bringing off the more experienced players and giving the less experienced an opportunity for more game time. Waimea were still playing attacking rugby which resulted in scoring tries. Waimea then reduced playing numbers, which saw Wanderers start to see some reward for their hard work and they went on to score two well-deserved tries. Waimea’s coach Adam Fraine said afterwards that the score line didn’t really reflect the game. It was a bruising encounter with both teams losing players through some big collisions. He said that Waimea have been working hard on their defensive

Nelson Matters Nelson was rightly in celebration mode over the weekend for the opening of the $9.5m refurbishment and strengthening of our School of Music. I am in awe of our pioneers who established the school in 1894. It was a first for New Zealand. It set Nelson apart so early in our history as a city of culture and creativity. The original 500 seat auditorium was opened in 1901 by Lady Ranfurly. Thomas Cawthron donated the organ in 1913. The Rainey House extension was added in 1966 and the Kidson Building in 1971. Murray and Jocelyn Sturgeon generously donated the Steinway piano

in 2009. It was a blow for our musical community when the building had to be closed in 2013 due to earthquake risk. Heritage buildings can be a nightmare to refurbish. Too often we defer so long that demolition becomes inevitable. We lost the beautiful architecture and heritage of Nelson’s Provincial Chambers in the 1960s out of neglect. I am pleased to have helped secure direct Government funding support of $1.5 million as well as contributions from the Rata Foundation of $850,000 and Lotteries of $1.2 million. The Nelson Council provided $3.3 million with the bal-

ance from the School of Music and community fundraising. I am not surprised the cost of the project stretched by about a million dollars as nasty surprises were found during the restoration. The core architectural features have been retained but the building has been made much more usable for modern performances. It has gone from one of our most dangerous buildings in an earthquake to one of our safest. The benefits of this refurbished building are educational, cultural and economic. The educational gain is that it will support a new generation of musical talent. The

structures and today the defence was fantastic and stopped Wanderers attacking play. He also said that Wanderers deserved a lot of credit as they never stopped trying for the entire game and showed a gritty determination. Waimea players of the day were: Three points to Tessa Hiller who, after receiving very sad news of a family member passing away this week, stood up and had a massive game in both attack and defence, showing her true spirit. The whole Waimea Club would like to send their condolences to Tessa and her family. The inspirational captain Stephanie Mitchell earns two points, not only for how she played but for how she led the team. Anya Schultz gained one point for taking every opportunity in using the space created by her teammates and scoring four tries.

cultural gain is the hundreds of future musical performances we Nelsonians will get to enjoy in this historic venue with superb acoustics. The economic gain for Nelson is being able to host events like the 2019 International Adam Chamber Music Festival that brings millions in visitor spending to our region. I pay tribute to the School of Music team, particularly Chair Roger Taylor, fundraising lead Colleen Marshall and former director Bob Bickerton, along with the Nelson City Council and hundreds of volunteers and supporters. We should also take pride in the local skills we have in firms like Irving Smith Ar-

chitects and Coman Construction that successfully delivered this complex project. Nelson is incredibly blessed to have three iconic arts facilities with our Theatre Royal, Suter Art Gallery and School of Music, each amongst the oldest in New Zealand. I gave a speech to Nelson Rotary a decade ago worried that all three faced an uncertain future without major upgrades and set an ambition for each of them to be progressively refurbished. It is an incredible achievement to have all three done. It shows what is possible when Government, Council and community work together. Advt.

Senior footballers excite the crowd

Richmond Athletic AFC’s 13th grade Waimea Print Express Red Devils team had a close encounter with their FC Nelson opponents at Neale Park on Saturday, June 9. A good early run and cross from Nat Gill saw the crossbar rattled early, and shortly after Richmond’s goalie was tested but remained solid between the posts. Some great defensive work from Julian Woodhead, who was later named man of the match, helped the team finish the first half at 0 - 0. An early goal for Richmond in the second half, after a super pass from Callum Cousins to set up the goal, gave them the lead, however it was cancelled out when Nelson scored from the penalty spot to go 1 - 1. Tom Appleton then added a goal after a great cross, with the goalie only managing to deflect it into the net. FC Nelson replied again with a great longrange shot to make it 2 - 2. And with the pressure on both teams, James Stilwell scored the deciding goal, showing some real pace when it counted, meaning the Richmond team finished 3 - 2 winners. It was an exciting game enjoyed by a great turn out of supportive parents and spectators. In the U17 division, the Car Company Richmond Glory played Nelson College Academy at Jubilee Park and, with their opponent playing a nice style of football, knew they were in for a tough chal-

lenge. The Richmond side were the more aggressive to start with and matched College for most of the game, and after the College team scored the first two goals, Richmond’s Ashley Keen scored a great goal before half time and got them back in the game. Most of the second half was fairly even with both teams having opportunities and it was only in the last 10 minutes that College scored three more goals against the tiring Richmond side to make the final score 5 – 1. Cameron Thompson is Nelson Speedway’s youngest competitor to win the Hebberd Cup Sportsperson of the Year award since 1968. The Hebberd Cup is an overall award for all speedway classes in Nelson. Cameron has raced out of the Nelson club since he turned 12 but it wasn’t until his last season, this past summer, that he achieved his goal of winning a home race - and finishing his youth stock career - on his home track. The 16-year-old’s nomination was based on his commitment and contribution to the track. It speaks volumes that his peers have, again, voted him as the Nelson Youth Mini-stock Sportsperson of the Year, for the third year running. MC Wayne Martin read out at the Speedway prize-giving on Saturday, May 19, “There is so much to be said about this young man. He has an enthusiasm level well above most people of his age, and determination to make sure he does the best job possible whether it be as a competitor, a mentor or organiser for class displays and fund-raising. When racing, Cameron isn’t preoccupied on chasing the chequered flag. He has set himself goals throughout the season, of reducing his lap time, consistently placing, and running a clean race.” Cameron was humbled and a bit shocked to receive the ‘big cup’, wanting to thank everyone who has helped him

I L DE E R S LR TD D You only have to see the smiles on their faces and their enthusiasm for playing basketball – that says it all. The special education department at Waimea College started the Waimea Tornadoes Basketball team in 2009. Coach Ed Book says “that year we went to Palmerston North for our first Special Olympics summer game. We just thought it would be a one-off but it continued to keep snowballing. Now, the Tornadoes are our elite team. We have the Fulton Hogan League and Olympic certificate days – everyone is participating, but this is the next level up to have a tournament team that travels; it gives them something a little bit special to be part of – something to strive for. Things really began to develop in 2017; we now have school exchanges from Christchurch, and this year we head to Greymouth to help get their Special Olympics up and going.” Tornadoes team members have a range of disabilities from autism through to cerebral palsy, “but the kids are very competitive just

like anyone else. And like any other basketball team, they also go through the usual trial process and learn to deal with disappointment when they are not selected. When this happens we help them work on these skills so they can perhaps get selected the following year. For those who do make it on the team, they get to travel, go away to tournament – it’s an absolutely fantastic experience. These players become leaders who model the kind of behaviours future players can follow.” There are numerous dedicated basketball coaches at Waimea College who love their involvement with the Tornadoes and the Fulton Hogan League. “There’s Paula Roberts and Juanita Ingham and many more who want to give their time to come and coach the kids. I’ve been involved since 2002, and it’s been getting bigger and bigger. It’s great Waimea College has been so supportive in getting these kids participating as much as possible.”

Richmond F45 show moments of magic Richmond F45 made sweet moments of magic against Jacks, but were ultimately out-performed during last Thursday’s premier netball game at Saxton Stadium. The defensive pressure was on once again from the outset with goalkeeper Sarah Steele creating turnovers from the opening whistle. After impressive defence work, captain Kat Jones was forced to depart the game with a calf injury. The first quarter settled up at 11-9 to Jacks. Jacks’ shooters felt the strain in the second quarter, with Richmond 45’s defensive unit, Amy Cunningham and Sarah Steele, gaining a barrage of tips and turnover ball. With the half time tally at 22-18 in Jack’s favour, the time was right for Richmond F45 to raise their game. The athletes started well, with experienced centre Lisa Book directing her shooters into opportune space. Waimea Old Boys Rugby Club, dubbed your ‘local club of choice,’ will be celebrating rugby at its annual club day on June 16th, and the whole community is invited! “Club day is all about recognising our past and current players as well our club member supporters and all the parents,” says WOB Director Jono Phillips. “It’s a real community day, with a real focus on the rugby; it’s a great opportunity for everyone to come along and enjoy themselves. Sixteen games will be played at Jubilee Park, starting with the junior teams at 9:30am, right through to the Senior A team playing Central from Marlborough at 3pm. We’re hoping it will be a fine afternoon; it will great rugby for people to watch and just be part of the local community. The Waimea College girl’s rugby team will be running a sausage sizzle, and the club rooms will be open – club day will be an ongoing event of celebrating rugby!” The strength of the club can be traced back to its roots; the Waimea Old Boys Rugby Football Club Inc was established in 1896 when it forged strong links with the Waimea and Tasman community, which remain true today. “What keeps our club going is that we are all passionate about the game of rugby itself; the love of rugby that you get from being part of it,” says Jono. “But we also want it to be the ‘club of choice’ in the Tasman region – for people choosing to play rugby. well.” When Jono Phillips moved to the region two years ago his idea was to “move out of rugby”, but “getting involved again has been a great way to give back at this level.” Jono brings 23 years of professional coaching experience to the club which includes coaching Scotland and the Hurricanes Super Rugby. “It was a great achievement when Waimea Old Boys won the local competition for both 15s and 7s last year, so now the focus is for the Senior A Team to win the Tasman Trophy, and also to have as many people playing rugby as we can.” Despite his obvious success, Jono was quick to deflect the attention away from talking about his own contribution, to that of the countless volunteers who “do fantastic things in their own time” for the WOB’s. “On Club Day they are very much part of it – setting up the grounds, making sure the referees and teams are looked after, they keep the bars running and the kitchens working – there is a whole army of people making the day work really well.” Jono was also keen to mention key people such as Marc Hunt who oversees the Junior Club, and “who will be looking after all the morning rugby and the junior teams on club day. There’s also Troy Hahn – our Club Manager who takes care of the senior club and all the day-to-day running of the club and the general club management together with our Club President Zane Beloe; these three people do an incredible amount of work alongside numerous other dedicated club members and, with the valued support of our sponsors, make it all possible.” The future of the Waimea Old Boys Rugby Club

A large stormwater pipeline is due to be installed in the Lower Queen Street area, and will require two large water mains to be lowered to allow the stormwater pipe to cross them. Public access to the eastern half of Moturoa/Rabbit Island will be closed on two days this winter while an organised game bird hunt takes place. The closure includes the beachfront at the eastern end of the island. Fish and Game organises the hunts, which are permitted on a trial basis under the Moturoa/Rabbit Island Reserve Management Plan. The hunts are timed to coincide with low tide to avoid any effect on shore birds. No hunting is allowed within 100 metres of the high tide mark. The Agrecovery chemical collection programme collects and safely disposes of old agrichemicals. Some chemicals need to be sent to France for high-temperature incineration and collections can usually only be carried out in each region every one to two years. The programme has recovered more than 100 tonnes of unwanted agrichemicals since it began 11 years ago. It is funded by voluntary levies paid by 60 manufacturers of agrichemical, animal health and dairy hygiene products - enabling Agrecovery to provide these programmes to farmers and growers free of charge. Products from participating brands are free to dispose of through the scheme. For non-funded products, user-pays fees apply. Kaiteriteri Wastewater upgrades move into next stage Significant construction work is underway in Stephens Bay to upgrade sewer pump stations at the Stephens Bay Reserve and Tapu Bay Reserve. The work is the second stage of a major wastewater project to increase the capacity and efficiency of the wastewater network in the area. The first stage was the installation of a new sewer main in the Riwaka-Kaiteriteri Road from Cederman Drive to Goodall Road, replacing the existing pipe under the Tapu Bay estuary. Moving the pipe into the road means it is easier to maintain and protects the estuary from any accidental spills or overflows. The two pump stations now need to be upgraded to push wastewater in the opposite direction – to the new main in the road. The work at the two reserves will take until July to complete and will mean some disruption to access. Some parking spaces at Stephens Bay and an area to the north of Tapu Bay reserve will be fenced off while construction is carried out. There will also be some construction traffic on the roads around Stephens Bay. People using the reserves should take care when accessing the steep access road to Tapu Bay Reserve and be aware there is construction taking place.
