Judene Edgar ‘Resilient farmer’ Doug Avery is going to be sharing his inspirational story of going from ‘president of the rural sad bastards’ club’ to author and motivational speaker, in Richmond on September 28. Having weathered years of drought and depression, charismatic Doug’s story of how he turned his Marlborough farm and his life around is powerful and inspiring. Doug has got in behind Nelson charity Walk with Us, and will be speaking at their auction to raise funds to help put shoes on young people. In their first three years of operation the charity has provided almost 300 pairs of shoes and boots and have recently established a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS). “As a mentor, I’ve seen first-hand the need for shoes in some of these

The two youths accused of damaging around 70 graves in two mindless attacks on the Richmond Cemetery will have to face up to the families affected by the vandalism. Nelson Bays Youth Aid Sergeant Charlie Parfitt told the Waimea Weekly on Monday that two male youths had been questioned about the vandalism and would be referred for a Family Group Conference “that should occur within the next four to six weeks”. All the families affected by the vandalism, which occurred on September 7 and 9, will be invited to attend the conference which will “determine how these youths are held accountable and whether or not charges are laid in the Youth Court”. Youth Court is for offenders under the age of 17 who cannot be named. Charlie would not say how old the offenders are or whether they lived in Richmond. Although there has been a considerable amount of communication on Facebook where the youths were named and their ages published. “I understand that we haven’t yet been able to contact all of the families that were affected. Police and Victim Support are still working

However, Carol says the need for good quality footwear by families financially struggling appears to be on the increase. “We’re certainly seeing the need grow. We’ve given 100 pairs of shoes already this year,” she says. Trustee Jenny Bates says they have been fortunate to have many repeat generous sponsors donating items for the auction night, which is the charity’s annual fund-raiser. “We are hugely dependent on and grateful for the support of local businesses and individuals,” Jenny says. Carol says the event gets bigger and better each year. Doug will be sharing his story of strength and new-found happiness, there will be live and silent auctions, canapés, a cash bar and Doug’s book, ‘The Resilient Farmer’, will be
available for purchase. Some of the ‘big ticket’ items up for grabs on the night are, a Sydney holiday package including four night’s accommodation, a Discover New Zealand seven day, four-berth campervan hire, a luxury Abel Tasman day trip for 20 people including canapés, and a 12-month CLM Health and Fitness gym membership. As well as BBBS, the charity works alongside 15 schools providing shoes through partnerships with local footwear providers. Victory School principal Helen Taylor-Young says quality shoes provide students with a sense of equality, enabling them to play sports to the maximum of their potential and helping families feel less isolated because of financial difficulty. The Walk with Us charity auction night is Thursday, September 28 at Waimea Old Boys’ clubrooms. Tickets are $20 (including canapés), and are available from Richmond Mall, Stirling Sport Nelson, Nelson Weekly and Whitwell’s.

our way through this process and it could still be a big Family Group conference. “The conference will decide where we go from here and I can’t pre-judge that outcome. But I imagine it will be very emotional for the families – there’s understandably some very strong feelings out there.” Charlie says police are taking the offence very seriously and are delighted with the response from the public who provided information relating to offence. “Police were contacted through a number of channels which is very encouraging. It shows the community is upset and doesn’t tolerate this kind of offending.”

Work to upgrade Clover Rd intersection starting A blackspot on State Highway 6 near Brightwater is set to be improved when work starts on an upgrade of the intersection at Clover Rd next Monday. The New Zealand Transport Agency advised last Thursday that contractors will begin work to upgrade the intersection of Clover Rd and State Highway 6. That follows preliminary work on undergrounding of services and will include extension of a culvert to allow for road widening, and the installation of right-turning bays on the high-
way. NZTA’s Top of the South, transport system manager, Frank Porter, says two-way traffic will continue for most of the time but motorists are advised to “take care, slow down to the temporary speed limits, and allow for minor delays”. “Traffic will be able to enter and exit Clover Rd but people may need to allow extra time to be guided through by work crews. “We appreciate that roadworks can be disruptive, both for residents and people who have to
travel through the intersection, but the work is essential to improve the level of safety and reduce the risk of crashes at the intersection.” Frank says. NZTA crash statistics show that there have been eight motor vehicle crashes, including three serious accidents, at the intersection since 2012. NZTA does not record non-injury accidents. The upgrade is expected to take 12 weeks, weather permitting. Information on the upgrade’s progress can be found on the website nzta.govt.nz

Providing hope in the Pacific Judene Edgar
Dentist Ann-Marie Urunkar, left, with nurse Chris Tuffnell on the MV Pacific Hope, providing outreach dental treatment in Vanuatu.
A group of Richmond dentists, hygienists, nurses and medical professionals have just returned from two weeks on board the 54m motor vessel “Pacific Hope”, providing outreach health care for isolated rural villages in Espiritu Santo, the largest of Vanuatu’s 82 islands. Local dentist Ross Ferguson has previously been to Fiji with Marine Reach, a Tauranga-based charity that delivers much-needed medical care and education to remote islands, but says this was the first time he had been on one of the ships. “I knew they needed a team and I was confident that I’d be able to get a team together,” says Ross. The use of ships, such as the Pacific Hope which was commissioned in 2015, is the most efficient means of bringing medical personnel, supplies and surgeries to inaccessible islands. A crew of 60 trained professionals and dedicated
volunteers from New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Germany boarded the Pacific Hope in Port Vila before setting sail to Espiritu Santo. Ross was part of a 12-strong contingent of medical personnel from Richmond that he says were very motivated to help. “To me, the great thing is that there’s a whole group in the community who have got in behind this.” During the two-week mission the ship moored at five different bays. Teams conducted clinics in the rural villages, and patients who needed surgical care were brought on board the ship which has a full range of dental equipment, and facilities for two dentists to operate side by side, as well as provision for a dental hygienist to provide cleaning and scaling services. Ross estimates that while he and dentist Ann-Marie Urunkar, also from Richmond Dental Centre, treated about 50 of the worst cases a day, GP Dr Trevor Parr saw maybe 1000 mouths.
“You see so many bad teeth but they only want the one giving them pain removed,” says Ross. In addition to a lack of dental treatment, Ross says the other key contributors are a lack of dental care and poor nutrition. Ann-Marie, who has previously joined Ross on outreach trips to Vietnam, Cambodia and Mozambique, was accompanied by her husband Mark Jenner, who is a skipper, and their two children, Isaac 10 and Ben eight. She says it was a real eye-opener for them but that they enjoyed playing with island children and jumping off the boat for swims. Sadly, many children are seen with serious decay in their new adult teeth, so oral hygiene is a major focus. The team have specifically-designed booklets and provide each patient with a toothbrush and education on how to brush and care for their teeth. “I saw children 10 or 11 years old and their first permanent molars were decayed down to the root; rotten to the core, literally,” says Ann-Marie. The Storylines Story Tour Bus visited the Richmond Library on Monday. Notable children’s authors and storytellers, Apirana Taylor, Juliet MacIver, Melinda Szymanik and Gareth Ward shared their stories in the children’s area to groups of excited younger readers from Richmond Schools. Pictured, back from left, Parana Taylor and Julius Maisey, enjoy some music, poetry and storytelling with author Apirana Taylor.

OpiniOn:
Cemetery vandals need harsh punishment Simon Bloomberg Reporter Steve Page Publisher There was good news for the families affected by the vandalism of around 70 graves at the Richmond Cemetery when police questioned two youths allegedly responsible for the sick and mindless attacks. The youths were quickly found after police received information from the public “through a number of channels” less than 48-hours after the second attack on September 9. And congratulations to those people. Really! The fact that there was an immediate response from the public is encouraging and shows the community will not tolerate this kind of despicable behaviour. Now the youths have been referred to Youth Aid and will have to face up to the people their vandalism affected in a Group Family Conference. And hopefully, the parents of these youths will also be held to account and asked why they didn’t know where their sons were late at night or early in the morning. If they can’t answer that question, then the various support agencies will need to become involved to help the youths and their families. And it’s time to stop blaming everybody else including the schools. Parents step up! Now’s your time. But the question remains, is the process of restorative justice enough? Is saying sorry and spending a few days weeding around the cemetery adequate punishment for this disgraceful attack? The fact that these youths rampaged through the cemetery not once, but twice, showed their vandalism was not just one night of sheer stupidity. It was a cold, calculated and repugnant act. The restorative justice process needs to consider this and the emotional harm it caused to so many families, and factor that into the punishment. The families and the community deserve that at the very least.
new parking limits Tasman District Council will be imposing P120 time restrictions on 40 carparks in the Petrie Carpark, at the back of the Richmond Library. Previously designated as all-day parking, the changes are designed to prioritise shoppers and short-term visitors. In addition, a number of parking spaces along McGlashen Ave will be changed to either P30 or P120 zones.

Dam funding Tasman District Council will be consulting the public on proposals for funding and governance of the Waimea Community Dam. The previous consultation in 2014, which had no definite external funding streams, saw council go back to the drawing board and secure funding from central government and irrigators. The consultation will also outline the proposed governance model, a Council-Controlled Organisation. The consultation period will run from October

Central teacher to head Rotoiti school Jessie Johnston Reporter
jessie@waimeaweekly.co.nz
From a large school in the centre of Nelson to the small roll in rural Rotoiti, Sue Ford admits there are some big changes coming her way next year when she becomes the new principal of Lake Rotoiti Primary School. Ever since she was 18 she has wanted to be a teacher, or a vet, “it was one or the other,” says Sue. But, with teachers telling her that her science grades were not good enough and confusion surrounding her university entrance, it was off to a job at the bank. After travelling overseas and having children, Sue began to ask herself what came next, which happened to be a diploma in veterinary nursing. “I finished my diploma down here and then I thought, 'do I want to be doing all the early shift work that I had been doing in New Plymouth' and I decided 'no', then one of the vets there said, “why don’t you go teaching,” and I thought ‘that’s funny, I used to want to do that’, so that’s what put me back into teaching,” says Sue. She completed her teacher training in 2007 and started working

She did long-term relief teaching for a few years before a one-year gap where she moved between Nelson Central School and Nelson Intermediate, before getting her permanent position at Nelson Central in 2011. “What I love is probably the relationships you build with the kids, the fact that one minute you’re doing maths, the next minute you’re getting in and being crea-
tive making something for the masked parade,” says Sue. “I think the other thing I love about teaching is the way that teaching itself is changing. How I used to teach six years ago I don’t teach nowadays, it just keeps you on your toes.” Throughout her career in teaching, Sue has always been drawn to the aspect of leadership and, after some encouragement from a colleague, began further studies in

curriculum leadership. “I started that in 2012 and finished in 2015 and I absolutely loved all the studies from it,” says Sue. “That really made me think, I’ve got this study now I want to actually put it to good use.” Having grown up rurally in Bulls and having sent her children to St Joseph’s and Garin College, Sue says she’s familiar with smaller schools, which will certainly come in handy considering Nel-
son Central has around 450 to 500 pupils, compared to a roll of around 36 in Rotoiti. Her class size will also be dropping from one of 30, to one of around 16. “I can remember saying to the kids one time ‘rattle your dags’ and they looked at me in confusion and it dawned on me that these are city kids, they have no idea what ‘rattle your dags’ means. Whereas if I said that out at Lake Rotoiti, they’d know it meant hurry up,” says Sue. While Sue is excited to get stuck in to her role as principal, she admits there is a lot to learn. “I think I’ll be bringing enthusiasm and new ideas, but I’m not going out there to make changes,” says Sue. “It’s not like 'bang, I need to change this and change that', I would like to really get out there and get to know what the school’s wanting from me as a principal and where they want to go.” Former Lake Rotoiti principal Giles Panting, who led the school for nine years, is currently working as lead advisor for the Ministry of Education’s Communities of Learning. “I loved being there so much that I stayed longer than I had originally intended,” says Giles. “I hope that Sue finds it as interesting and rewarding an experience as I did.”

Keeping our community safe Each week, the Richmond Community Patrol volunteers commit dozens of hours and drive hundreds of kilometres patrolling our streets, parks and car parks, to try and keep our community safe. Despite celebrating 10 years of service on Saturday night, two dedicated volunteers still rolled into action at 9pm, leaving the celebrations at Club Waimea behind. Coordinator Mike Gill says 40 people attended the function including past and current patrollers, sponsors and supporters. Mike says the celebration was a great way to acknowledge the valuable support given to the patrol from the Police, Council, local businesses and members of the public “willing to help us make Richmond a safer place in which to live”. The patrol has a stable group of about 25 volunteers with five of them, Marty Price, John Cullen, Bruce Thomson, David Barnes and Mike Gill, who have involved since the patrol started. The five received a certificate and badge commemorating their ten years of service at the function on Saturday. “It began mainly because of a lot of damage around streets, letterbox damage and damage in carparks,” says Marty. Mike says that over those ten years they’ve gone from “rank amateur to something pretty professional.” Patrollers now have a three-month induction period and 10 patrollers have recently completed training with Nelson Tasman Civil Defence so that they can offer support during emergencies. The daily patrols are normally between 9pm and 2pm, but last Christmas they extended their hours by adding day-time patrols for three weeks. Sergeant Kyle Bruning from Richmond Police says, “they have undoubtedly had a huge impact on community safety and crime prevention in the Richmond Waimea area throughout the last 10 years, and I am extremely grateful for the members who give up their time and
talents to help make our community safer.” “The partnership with Richmond police has been fantastic,” says Marty. He says they have also been fortunate to have the ongoing support of the Council who supplies them a vehicle and petrol, Phil Nicholls who provides free servicing, as well as AMI and Mt Campbell Communications. While Mike and Marty are keen to thank their sponsors, Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says the evening was a good opportunity to recognise the benefit the community patrol provides the community. Kyle agrees. “These volunteer patrols offer an extra set of eyes and ears patrolling our community and neighbourhoods.”

Slow start to whitebait season

The whitebait may not be running just yet but the enthusiasm is still there with plenty of optimistic whitebaiters lining the Waimea River this week. The whitebait season opened on August 15 and although the runs don’t usually start until next month, a bunch of dedicated fishers have been
setting and scooping their nets on rivers around the Tasman district. And it’s been slow-going with Laurie Christian saying on Monday that “I’ve had about five pounds in total and that’s poor - there’s not much about”. Laurie also laments that the catches are not as good as they used to be back in the day when he’d often return from the river with “25 pounds or more”.
“I’ve been fishing for almost 30 years and it’s not as good as it used to be. But it’s still enjoyable getting out and that’s what counts.” John Buckland says he’s been getting out on the river “four or five days a week” this season although “there hasn’t been much around so far, but you’ve got to be out to find out” “I’ve enough for a feed every time but that’s about all,” John says.
Nathan Campbell didn’t really care that the whitebait weren’t running yet saying “it’s just nice being out on such a lovely day.” Tim Roadley blamed the cold weather for the poor catches that he’d had over the last week. “It’s pretty quiet and probably all that snow isn’t helping,” Tim says The whitebait season in the Nelson district closes on November 30.

Iron Dukes gather round the campfire Jessie Johnston The Iron Duke Sea Scout’s annual campfire is hoping to join old scouts with new. The traditional event will take place at Maitai Valley Camp later this month. “Because our group’s gotten quite big now, we’ve got 120-odd youth involved. It’s a chance to get all the sections together, the Keas, the Cubs, the Scouts and the Venturers,” says Iron Duke leader, Peter Kortegast. The event will feature a flag ceremony, traditional, funny and new songs and skits that generally involve the leaders of each section being doused with water or embarrassed in some way, all with a roaring campfire in the centre.
It was after attending Nelson’s recent Merchant Navy Day that Peter decided to invite some of the past members along. “Our group was formed in 1921 and we’re the oldest continuously-running scout group in New Zealand so there are lots of old boys around in the community who are ex-Iron Dukers and we thought, well, our campfire does get quite large but it would be really nice to invite some of those guys along.” The campfire evening will be held on Tuesday, September 26, from around 6:30pm, with any ex-scouts encouraged to bring along a camp chair and a mug. If any ex-Iron Duke Sea Scouts would like more information on the upcoming campfire, they can contact Peter on 545 9369.
Bedpost Nelson has a simple philosophy when it comes to selling beds: only stock the best quality beds, offer a best price guarantee and then ensure your service is the best in town. By sticking to these three rules, Bedpost Nelson has earned a reputation as the best bed stockist in town and owner Elliot Earp says they’re just getting started. “We’ve had a great last year and that’s because we really work hard to get the right bed for people. We stock only the country’s top bedding brands, no cheap nasty stuff, just high quality beds.” That’s the quality part of their philosophy. Top brands like Sealy, Sleep Maker, Design Moble, Beauty rest, Tempur, Eastwest Designs, Turnwood and True Comfort are stocked by Bedpost and all of them are backed with a 10 year warranty. Then there’s price. Elliot, whose family hails from Wakefield, says the store’s “Best

Teams think big during Startup Weekend Jessie Johnston Those taking part in Nelson’s latest Startup Weekend brought passion, creativity and real-life problems to the table, creating some truly unique solutions. Organised by local.foundation, the event was a chance for aspiring entrepreneurs to create a business pitch for judges in just a matter of days. In the end, it was the six-person team Where on Earth which impressed the judges most. “The problem we were addressing is that there is a growing number of consumers who want to know the back story behind the products, they want to make informed decisions,” says team member Mathew Pottinger. “That might be because they’re concerned about the quality, they’re environmentally-conscious or they want to have social fairness in the manufacturing process.” Their solution was to create an online marketplace where businesses could list products, accompanied by an interactive map that showed consumers each stage of the manufacturing pro-

Five different teams were formed during the Startup Weekend, the common theme amongst individuals taking part being to have fun and learn new skills. “For me, the biggest thing is that we came into it thinking that, with six people, it was going to
give us a major advantage because we’ve got so many brains, but then we quickly worked out that six people is actually a massive source of conflict. At some stages we all struggled with teamwork, but it was really rewarding when we overcame that,” says Where on Earth member Helena Merschdorf.
Throughout the weekend teams had to unite around an idea, focus on customer development, validate their ideas, practice LEAN Startup Methodologies, and build a minimal viable product before demonstrating their prototypes and receiving feedback from the judges. Roost was runner-up, focusing

their business around taking the pain out of first home buying. Eco My aimed to help people become more environmentally-friendly, and Biz Movers sought to bring employee bases from large businesses from Auckland to Nelson. Their initial problem being high house prices, traffic congestion and other problems people face living and working in the larger city centres. Judge Dan Khan says he has been to many Startup Weekends as a participant and mentor, and often sees “relatively run-of-themill ideas,” however the topics discussed over the weekend were “actually meaningful problems that needed solving.” “Where on Earth had been down to the market and talked to 120 people. I’ve never been to a Startup Weekend where a team has done that much validation work,” says Dan. “I think there’s a tendency to go out to try and prove what you already thought was true, but it sounded like those guys had learned a lot from the people they’d talked to and the product they built in such a short time was huge.”

Hobby horse show jumping, a New Zealand first Judene Edgar and James Fleury An authentic Finnish sport has galloped its way across the world to the Hope School Country Fair, with hobby horse show jumping taking centre stage at the fair on Saturday, September 23. Organising committee member Sarah Whittle says, “my parents in the UK came up with the idea, I don’t know anyone else who’s done it, we think it’s a first for New Zealand”. The hobby horses have been designed and crafted by members of the Waimea Menz Shed, but people are welcome to bring their own horses along too. Menz Shed coordinator Alan Kissell says he researched hobby-horsing to understand how the horses would be used. “I googled it, and thought it was hilarious,” Alan says. Despite the hilarity, Sarah says they take their hobby horsing very seriously in Finland. The video gave Alan some great ideas of how to paint and decorate each horse. Riders straddle the horse, and parade around the arena, jumping hurdles and hoping to impress with their fancy footwork. Sarah says they will have a timed course with four different categories, including an adult/child pairs section. “We’re hoping for a clean competition with no horse bucking,”
says Sarah. In addition to the hobby horse show jumping, there will be all of the family favourites including their famous plant sale, preserves and baking, chocolate wheel, raffles, fresh fruit and veggies, and a huge secondhand sale. As well as live entertainment, there’ll be plenty to keep the kids entertained including pony rides and bouncy castles, a human fly wall, and fairground games. Organising committee member Olivia Neubauer says, “it’s more than a school event, it’s a whole community event.” The range of support from the community doesn’t stop at donations for the silent auction or helping on the day, many residents have been preparing year-round, growing and freezing produce to make delicious sauces, jams and pickles. Make sure you come and check out the hobby horse show jumping, taste delicious homemade treats and don’t miss out on the silent auction which has heaps of great items available including a Weta Studio tour, TranzAlpine rail journey and garden sculptures and furniture. For further details go to the Hope School Country Fair Facebook page. The fair is on Saturday, September 23, from 10 am to 2 pm and is the Hope School’s major annual fundraiser.

What you need to know We’re now working across two stages to try to get work done faster. Quick and quality work is our key focus. Work is well underway in Stage 2 and Downer has now moved into Stage 3. This is a change from the way we originally said the work would be carried out. Working across two stages is a more efficient way to progress the infrastructure replacements and allows Downer to work faster. Unfortunately, the trade-off is having to close off a longer section of the street. Downer will continue night work on the footpaths and work Saturdays where practicable.
The small section of Stage 3 past Sundial Square will remain open as long as possible. Although Cambridge Street is officially part of Stage 3, Downer will reopen access from Cambridge Street within a month of the Stage 2 opening. Vehicle access will be restored as soon as possible.
Key things to remember: • The footpaths remain open with access to all shops and there is plenty of parking • The road is closed to vehicles between Noel Leemings’ temporary carpark entrance to past Sundial Square. • Access in and out via Croucher Street (Sundial Square) and Cambridge Street is closed.
Stage 2 (Noel Leemings’ temporary carpark entrance to Cambridge Street) is scheduled for completion in lateSeptember. The underground services have been replaced. The road construction is underway which includes footpaths and streetscaping. Stage 3 (Cambridge Street up to ASB Bank) is scheduled for completion in late-November, however the Cambridge Street intersection will open earlier.

He is the man to go to if you want something different from the rest, and he’ll always work hard to accommodate his client’s specifications. Although a small company, PR Construction has been able to compete with other larger building companies, offering good advice, quality workmanship and no cost-cutting. Leighton has a passion for building passive homes and is always searching for a better way to future-proof his builds. Many of his past clients would agree that he should be your first choice. “When we decided to build a new home on our property we had no reservations in choosing PR Construction to do our build. We had seen the completed homes that they had already done in our area and were impressed enough to not even try looking for someone else. They have been extremely professional in all our dealings with them and the house is coming along just as we expected. PR Construction are managing the build to the extent that all we have had to do is make decisions on design and décor. We would recommend them to anyone.” – Dick and Liz Hocking. For over 20 years James Chappèll has studied the effects of electromagnetic fields in the home, and keeps up-to-date with the latest research. Headaches, tiredness, CFS and immune dysfunction are just some of the many symptoms felt by those who are sensitive to these fields. On inspection of the premises, James uses instruments to measure the fields before preparing a report. He recommends changes to improve the home’s electromagnetic environment. There are many simple remedies. In the case of poor sleep, it can help to move the bed away from a wall where wiring is producing a pulsing electromagnetic field. The field could be charging the Gib board, which in turn charges the headboard and the pillow. There are many aspects of a home that produce electromagnetic fields causing discomfort. James does not offer any medical advice, only architectural changes to the premises. James has a degree in interior architecture and has worked in this field for his whole working life. For the last 17 years he has advised on electromagnetic environment in Wellington. Recently moved to Richmond, he is available to help people feel more comfortable in their homes. Just a thought... Ross Ferguson
Richmond Community Church Depression, mental illness and suicide has now reached epidemic proportions globally, and is of such concern that the United Nations in the last five years acknowledge that it requires urgent attention. The World Health Organisation (WHO) predict that by the year 2020, depression will be the second most debilitating cause of disease, across all countries, genders and ages, just behind heart
disease. Poverty, broken relationships, drug abuse, physical and sexual abuse are major contributing factors to the near one million people who commit suicide globally every year. The cost of treating depression and all forms of mental illness is astronomical and obviously needs to be addressed at every level, but we have relied on skilled medical health professionals, counsellors, pharmaceutical companies and politicians, yet are so often inadequate in addressing the feeling of hopeless-
ness. We live in a world devoid of hope, yet the only one who can offer a lasting hope is the author of life and his word of hope is able to bring light into the darkest places. That dark place may be your own inner world or it may be a nation that has suffered years of oppression or repression. For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Rom. 15: 4 Hope is basic to life.
Without that needed spark of hope, we are doomed to a dark, grim existence and nowhere else and no one else but Jesus Christ can offer that spark of hope. On a global scale you might be interested that two of the countries that have had the most repressive regimes that have tried to eradicate Christianity and the message of hope that the church brings, are now unable to stop the rapid growth of the church. Chairman Mao and his cultural revolution and forced secularisation failed miserably and the

Christian population in China numbers over 120 million today. Iran is a country that has worked very hard to eliminate Christianity and close down churches, but it remains the place where the church is growing the fastest. The apostle Peter said “You killed the author of life, but Christ raised him from the dead and we are witnesses of this fact.” They tried to kill the Son of God, but they failed miserably and in fact it has only strengthened his message of hope which just gets stronger.
The Mapua Community Library is a hive of activity preparing for this weekend’s biennial literary festival. The festival is the library’s main fund-raiser and a major drawcard for the town bringing in hundreds of people over the weekend. The theme of this years’ festival is ‘Journeys’ – journeys real and imagined, of time and space, and of the mind and the heart. Festival committee member Anne Thompson says that they have expanded the programme this year to include a schools’ day on the Friday as well as ‘readers and writers’ format conversations with authors Saturday and Sunday. Storyteller Roger Sanders will be holding a session for younger children on Saturday morning. There is also evening entertainment with a literary quiz on the Friday hosted by columnist Joe Bennett and ‘Twilight Poetry’ on Saturday. The full programme is available on their website mapuacommunitylibrary. co.nz. All events will be held at the Mapua Community Hall on Aranui Rd.

Nelson’s Georgia Whitla showed why she is a world rogaine champion, teaming up with Megan Carter to win the women’s section of the Nelson Orienteering Club’s Wily Weka six-hour race held around the Maitai Valley on Sunday. Last month, Georgia and Greig Hamilton won the open mixed race and finished fifth overall at the world champs in Latvia. It was Georgia’s second consecutive world title after winning the women’s team race in Alice Springs in 2016 and on Sunday she showed her class again, zeroing in on controls around the Botanics, Grampians and Sharland Creek to record 3520 points. Georgia and Megan’s total was just 450 points behind the winning men’s team of Dan Busch and Patrick Higgins, and only 600 less than the winners of the men’s mountainbike-running section, Dave Quested and Callum Wilkie. The next fastest women’s team was Robyn Dunmore, Alexa Harris and Lorene Palmer with 2900 points in the Spring Challenge category. “It went pretty well today,” Georgia says. “It’s a good event and good training for the Spring Challenge.” Georgia will be racing with Isla Smith and Anna Barrett in the Spring Challenge in South Canterbury in two weeks and says they will need to perform well to win the nine-hour all-female team’s event.
A long-range goal is GODZone in Fiordland in March where she will race with her Swordfox team-mates Ash Whitehead, Brent Edwards and Stu Lynch. “We’ve had a few seconds in the Spring Challenge so it would be nice to win, but it’s going to be really hard this year. “Sophie (Hart) is back racing and Jo Williams will be there too – it looks like the most competitive Spring Challenge ever.” Dan and Patrick finished on the same number of points as Ash and Brent in the men’s Wily Weka but won by 360 after Ash and Brent finished 11 minutes after the six-hour cut-off. The mixed running section was won by Zoe King and Gavin and Rebecca Stobie on 3350 points. Jenna Neame and Maria Voight won the women’s mountainbikerunning section on 2530 points while Tim Bygate, Gretchen Dalzell and Kieran Hambrook were the top mixed team on 3000 points. Gavin and Olivia Lambert won the family section with 2460 points. Richard Greatrix and Darron Jones won the men’s three-hour race with Mel Barker and Naomi Whitehead winning the women’s section on 1730 points. Dene Gavin and Hayley Segal won the mixed three-hour race on 1830 points, Riley Croxford and Sam Johnson won the junior boys with 1680 points while Jess Alloway, Hannah Martin and Charlotte Tucker won the junior girls on 1240 points. The event attracted more than 400 competitors and was a fund-raiser for the Nelson Orienteering Club.

Record field for Dun Run Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Nelson’s Patrick Higgins and Appleby’s Paula Canning showed they are on track for bigger events later in the season when they led from start to finish to win Saturday’s Dun Run. Patrick won the 23rd edition of the 25km trail that started at the Maitai Dam and took runners over the 875m Dun Saddle to the finish at the OK Corral in The Brook, to finish in 1hr 54min 18sec. Paula also set a fast pace out in front, finishing in 2hr 6min 49sec to win her third Dun Run from four starts. Olivia Bird has been the only runner to beat Paula in the event. “I wasn’t really planning to go to the front, but the pace was only steady so I decided to go,” Patrick says. “I got a bit of a break, although
I was looking over my shoulder coming down the track to make sure nobody was chasing.” But the Dun Run is just the start for Patrick who is building up to

in this year’s race held around the Queenstown district. Paula’s win shows she is on target for her main mission, the national half marathon champs in Kerikeri in November. The region’s top female distance runner was just outside her Dun Run course record of 2hr 5min 28sec, set last year. Dave Keen was a close second in the men’s race, finishing in 1hr 56min 45sec, while Stu Cottam won the 50-59 age group in 2hr 10min 26sec and Graeme Sellars won the 60+ in 2hr 35min 22sec. Young Nelson runner Callum Wilkie also impressed, finishing in 1hr 59min 52sec. Jessica Barnes was second in the women’s race in 2hr 25min 43sec, just ahead of third-placed Frances Riley in 2hr 26min 32sec. Mapua’s Maria Voight won the women’s 50-59 age group in 2hr 51min 10sec. A record 181 runners competed in the event.

FC Nelson claim football title Andrew Board
FC Nelson has smashed ten goals past Wakefield to emphatically claim the Nelson Bays Football first division title for 2017. The game was moved from FC Nelson's home ground
of Guppy Park, which was deemed "unplayable" due to recent rain, to the Wakefield Domain. That move looked to have helped the underdog Wakefield side which started the game strongly and even had a penalty opportunity. But FC Nelson is full of classy
players with plenty of experience and it didn't take long for that to show. Taking a 3-0 lead into the half time break, FC Nelson coach Paul Brydon says he was happy with how his team was performing. "We just had to be patient and keep playing. Wakefield start-
ed well but once we had three I was pretty happy with where we were." The second half turned into a rout, but Paul says the win was still sweet. "To come back the way we did. I always thought it was possible and it's great for the club."
SportS RUGBY Tim Perry is the latest Mako to be called up to the All Blacks. The prop will join Kane Hames, Liam Squire and David Havili in the All Blacks camp ahead of this weekend's test match against the Springboks in Auckland. Perry has played for Tasman since 2012 and also plays for the Crusaders at Super Rugby level. He was called into the All Blacks camp on Monday after starter Joe Moody was ruled out with injury. FOOTBALL Tasman United has announced two more signings this week, Wairarapa United players Cory Chettleburgh and Brian Kaltak. They join four other Nelson Pine LVL Tasman United players who spent the winter playing for Wairarapa United. Former New Zealand Under 20 representative Chettleburgh, 26, is a midfielder who was playing for Hawke's Bay in last year’s competition. Brian Kaltak, 23, is a Vanuatu international centre back. Tasman United play in the ISPS Handa premier National Football competition which commences in October. RUGBY A big second half comeback, led by first five Mitchell Hunt, has seen the Tasman Makos earn its second win of the Mitre 10 Cup season. Down 28-13 early in the second half, the Makos fought back to win 37-35 at Blenheim's Landsdowne Park on Sunday. Hunt finished the game with a 22 point haul including a try, three penalty goals and four conversions. Tasman next play Otago in Dunedin on Saturday.

Dan says a great team spirit helped. "We were over the moon with the season. We set a few goals right from the start. Right from the first couple of trainings it was a good culture." Nelson Trout Fishing Club is getting ready for the opening of the fishing season on October 1, with a two-day fly casting clinic with one of New Zealand’s leading instructors, Tony Entwistle. Tony started trout fishing as a seven-year-old and has held a licence ever since. He started teaching in his early twenties and has taught hun-
dreds of anglers how to cast. Club president Michael Stevenson says there will be other experienced fly-casters helping Tony on the day, and that it’s a great opportunity for club members and the public to get an introduction to fly-casting for trout. “The course is for anyone interested in learning fly-fishing and fly-casting as well as those anglers who need a bit of rust removed.” The club has members from their twenties through to

Electors may demand poll
Creating an Age-Friendly Tasman
Events
Notice is given under Section 28(1) of the Local Electoral Act 2001, that Tasman District Council resolved to retain the First Past the Post (FPP) electoral system for the next two triennial general elections, being 2019 and 2022. Electors of Tasman District Council have the right to demand a poll to countermand the resolution to use the First Past the Post electoral system for the Council elections in accordance with Section 29 and 30 of the Local Electoral Act 2001. The choice is between the First Past the Post (FPP) electoral system and the Single Transferable Vote (STV) electoral system. A valid demand for a poll is to be made in accordance with sections 29 and 30 of the Electoral Act 2001, and must:
We want Tasman to be a great place to live for people of all ages. As part of our planning for the next 10 years, we’re asking our older residents how we can make it easier for them to get out and about, participate in social activities or employment, access housing and achieve good health. The feedback will be used to inform the drafting of our Long Term Plan for 2018 – 2028, and to develop an AgeFriendly Policy. Come along to one of the community drop-in sessions, or fill in an online survey, to get involved. Community drop-in sessions Richmond – Monday 25 September, 10.00 am – 12.00 pm, Council Chamber, Tasman District Council offices, Queen Street. Motueka – Tuesday 26 September, 10.30 am – 12.30 pm, Motueka Recreation Centre, Old Wharf Road. Murchison – Monday 9 October, 10.30 am – 12.30 pm, Murchison Sport, Recreation & Cultural Centre, Hampden Street. Fill in the survey: Visit www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback

For any demand received after this date, the outcome will apply from the 2022 triennial elections. Every elector who signs a demand must also set out in it his or her full name and the address for which he or she is qualified as an elector of Tasman District Council.
New parking time limits in Richmond Time restrictions will be imposed on 40 carparks in the Petrie Carpark, as well as on several sections of McGlashen Avenue, to reduce the pressure on parking in Richmond town centre. The changes are:

Flush Your Taps Did you know metals in some household fittings can be dissolved into your water? As all of Tasman District Council’s drinking waters supplies are naturally ‘soft’, it means they can more easily absorb minute amounts of heavy metals such as lead, nickel and copper from your household plumbing. The Ministry of Health therefore recommends that for these types of water supplies which are known as ‘Plumbosolvent’, people should not drink the first mugful of water if their tap has not been used for several hours, such as overnight. Instead, people should run the tap for a second or so, which will quickly flush away any water that has become contaminated with lead or any other metals from the plumbing fittings. You should also never fill your kettle from your hot water tap, as it could have high levels of copper in it (from your hot water cylinder). Additional details on this issue can be sourced from the Ministry of Health website – www.moh.govt.nz – search for ‘plumbosolvency’.

Do your trees hang low? Now is a good time to check that the vegetation on your property hasn’t become a nuisance. If you have a hedge, shrubs or trees that grow alongside a footpath it’s up to you to make sure they don’t make it hard for people to get past – including those with prams or mobility scooters. So please take a walk around your property and check if any trees, shrubs or bushes need a haircut.
