The few drops of rain over the weekend provided a small spike in the river flows, but not enough to prevent water restrictions being put in place. Stage one water restrictions came into force from Monday, December 11. “The Waimea River has dropped down to trigger levels at Wairoa Gorge, so we are moving to Stage one rationing for urban users and most other water users on the Waimea Plains,” says Tasman District Council’s Dry Weather Taskforce Convenor Dennis Bush-King. The Stage one rationing means a cut in use by 20 per cent of consented water take levels, and applies in the Upper Catchment, Reservoir, Waimea West, Delta, Golden Hills, and the Upper Confined Aquifer zones on the Waimea Plains. Watering restrictions for urban water users in Richmond, Mapua, Ruby Bay, Brightwater, Wakefield, and Hope, and their rural extensions, means only hand-held hosing of gardens every second day is permitted according to your house number - if you have an even house number you may water on the even number calendar dates. Council also request people with swimming pools to not fill them, and if you have to wash your car to use a bucket. Leaks are another significant drain on the water supply. Please call in any leaks you notice to Council’s 24/7 customer services helpline on 543 8400.

Brianna McKay, 8, selling lilies at the first Bayleys Brightwater Market on Sunday at the Village Green. After seeing the success of other markets in the region, Kellie Todd and Sean Marr decided to create a market that the Brightwater community could call their own. As well as around 18 talented local stallholders, the market featured stalls that regularly sell at the Saturday market in Nelson. “The other thing we were focused on was having a kid’s marquee, so each time we’ll have different children there, selling their own items,” says Kellie. At this stage the market will run on the last Sunday of the month throughout the summer period. For more information, check out their Facebook page, The Brightwater Market. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

New Lake Rotoiti pool makes a splash Judene Edgar Living in the Nelson Lakes region is an idyllic dream for many, but living at the water’s edge means that the school’s 30 students need to be competent swimmers. When the school’s pool reached the end of its life, the community rallied around to raise funds. Thanks to the efforts of the school and numerous community groups, the existing five metres by 15 metres shallow pool has been replaced by a deeper, six metres by 25 metres pool. The new pool was officially opened by past pupil Pat Borlase and newest pupil Sophie Jordan on Thursday, December 7. “Around 35 parents and community members turned out alongside our 30 children for the blessing by Reverend Chris Richards,” says acting principal Mike Allen.

Lake Rotoiti School students finally got to cool off this week in their new swimming pool. Photo: Supplied. “It was a glorious day, full sunshine and all of the children got to jump in for the first time.” The children are looking forward

A Christmas to remember

to being able to use the pool over the summer and for their swimming lessons in the new year. Last summer they’d had to take

children to Wakefield School to enable swimming lessons to continue. “It was a huge effort and we

couldn’t have done it without the parents and teachers who volunteered to transport children to and from Wakefield,” he says. While Mike acknowledges some frustrations along the way, he says that the final benefit to the school and the community is worth it. Following approval from the Ministry of Education, the old pool was demolished in May to enable the Aquaflow team to start framing the new pool ready for the concrete pour. “Dave Puklowski and Phil Prentice and the boys from Aquaflow have done a great job.” Now complete with a heat pump to keep the pool at a balmy 27 degrees Celsius, Mike is hoping for a consistent and perhaps prolonged swimming season each year that the school and community can enjoy.

It’s a bicultural world for Garin Dux Judene Edgar Garin College Dux Joseph Robinson is just as comfortable speaking in Te Reo as he is in English, and he’s looking forward to undertaking further Maori studies at Otago University next year. “Te Reo was compulsory in year nine and I just loved it,” says Joseph. “It’s such a lovely language and such a treasure for New Zealand to hold onto.” He has also enjoyed learning about Parihaka, the Land Wars and the intertribal Musket Wars as part of early New Zealand history. “I find it really fascinating and I could talk about it for hours,” he laughs. Along with fellow academic captain Julia Froeling, who was awarded Proxime Accessit at last week’s award ceremony, they’ve coordinated the school’s peer tutoring programme as well as organising weekly quizzes. “We also did fun things like Pi Day,” says Joseph. “It’s amazing watching people shove their faces into cream pies to find pieces of paper with parts of pi written on them.” Joseph’s leadership skills were also recognised at the Awards evening, receiving the St Vincent de Paul Leadership Award. He credits much of his organisational skills to his time in the

Iron Duke Sea Scouts. Starting at primary school, he capped off his scouting career in August by receiving the Queen’s Scout, the highest award achievable for Venturers (14 to 18-year-olds).

Sir Patrick was instrumental in the establishment of Garin College, and Patron since it opened in 2002 until his passing in September 2017. Photo: Judene Edgar. While Venturers kept him busy organising tramps and outdoor activities, he still found time to complete the 25km Dun Run in September. “I did the Alpine Loop the Lake last year and it was a personal goal of mine to complete

the Dun Run this year,” says Joseph. “I’m not super competitive; it’s just a good way to keep fit.” He’s also in good company, with former Waimea Intermediate friends Christopher Gray and Andre Castaing, who went to Waimea College and Nayland College respectively, also achieving great success this year. “We were all friends at Waimea Intermediate before we parted ways, and then we’ve all ended up as Duxes.” Joseph is heading to Otago University next year to study law and a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Maori studies. His university plans got a boost when he was awarded the Otago University Academic Excellence Scholarship, a scholarship worth $40,000 over three years. “It was a bit of a shock to the system, however, I couldn’t have done it without the support and encouragement of Garin staff over the years,” says Joseph. Principal John Maguire says that it has been a very strong academic year, with the school receiving an outstanding $224,000 in tertiary and university scholarships. He says that this is well over double what they would normally receive and doesn’t include other corporate and private scholarships.

Skills and thrills at skatepark training Judene Edgar The Skatepark Tour gets bigger and better each year, but organisers are also keen for it to encourage people to skate and scooter every day, not just at the competitions. “It’s about giving people the opportunity and confidence to not only partake in the tour, but to use the skateparks regularly,” says Tasman District Council’s community partnerships officer Lani Evans. One of the tour sponsors, Cheapskates, are taking that message to heart, running free skate skills session for children in Richmond, Brightwater and Tapawera. Cam Barry and Tom McGhee were on-hand at the Richmond Skatepark on Monday, running a group of around a dozen children through their paces. Eight-year-old Awatea Roebuck-Danks and his fiveyear-old brother Manaia were there to gain confidence with some of the manoeuvres. Both boys had entered in the Skatepark Tour

for the first time earlier this year. “Skateboarding is really fun and challenging, but I’m not that good at ollies,” says Awatea. Younger brother Manaia was also keen to learn a kickflip while he was there. “I’m hoping to go in the tour again. I had a lot of fun last time,” says Manaia. The free skate skills sessions are at Richmond Skatepark on Monday, December 18, from 3.45 to 4.45pm, Brightwater Skatepark on Tuesday, December 19, from 3.30 to 4.30pm and Tapawera Skatepark on Wednesday, December 20, from 3.30 to 4.30pm. Bring along your skateboard or scooter if you have one, although Tom says that they will have some skateboards available for people who would like to give skateboarding a try for the first time. Participants need to bring along a helmet - a BMX helmet is preferable although a bike helmet will also be suitable - as well as shoes and water.

Santa meets his fans

Judene Edgar

Santa made his debut at the Richmond Mall on Monday to crowds of children, eager to sit on his knee and let him know what they’d like for Christmas. Four-year-old Olive Aynsley visits Santa each year and this year, “I told Santa I wanted Shopkins,” she says. She was also very excited that Santa had given her some stickers and a candy cane. Eight-month-old Ruby McKay met Santa for the first time, but her mum, Jessica says that she was not phased at all. “She was great, apart from trying to pull off Santa’s beard,” says Jessica. In his new-look grotto near the Richmond Mall information counter, Santa will be on hand every day from 12.00 to 2.00pm and again from 3.00 to 5.00pm. Despite being busy getting toys ready for delivery around the globe, Santa will also be in his grotto from 6.00 to 8.00pm on late nights (December 14, 20, 21 and 22). Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq

says that Santa is a popular visitor each year and the children love being able to whisper their present requests to him. A photographer is on hand if people would like a family photo, but Belinda says that this is optional, and people are welcome to take selfies or their own photos. “We are also doing Sensitive Santa again this year,” says Belinda. “We got a lot of positive

feedback after trialling it last year, so we’re delighted to run it again.” Sensitive Santa is the opportunity for a private, more quiet meeting with Santa for children with special needs. The first Sensitive Santa session on Monday was met with great popularity, and he’s looking forward to another session on Sunday, December 17, from 6.00 to 7.00pm. Finishing is winning and winning is finishing

Rod Dixon doing squats with children from Room 2 at Hope School. Photo: Judene Edgar.

Judene Edgar Back home for the 50th anniversary of the Nelson Sports Awards, Olympian Rod Dixon took the opportunity to visit some of the schools taking part in his Kidsmarathon programme. Rod was selected to represent New Zealand at four Olympic Games, getting a bronze medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics in the 1500 metres race, and is a two-time world cross-country medallist. In 1983 he won the New York marathon in one of the race’s most dramatic finishes, winning by a nail-biting nine seconds.

But Rod’s journey to victory started back at primary school, and his Kidsmarathon programme is aiming to provide that same opportunity for other children. “You’re born to move. Sitting all day in classrooms dumbs kids down,” Rod says. “I had a teacher at Tahunanui School who would send me to the principal’s office with a note every hour. It was only much later that I realised that the note was blank, but he knew that if I sat for too long that I closed down and disengaged.” Kidsmarathon is a schoolsbased running and nutrition programme that enables kids to

complete a marathon by running approximately 5km each week over eight to 10 weeks. The training guide provides nutrition tips, warm-up and cool-down information, and weekly goals. “The kids know the story of the tortoise and the hare and I use that to teach them to run slower and last the distance,” he says. “It’s about the achievement, finishing the journey - finishing is winning and winning is finishing.” For Rod, the journey is not only about running, but about a lifelong commitment to good health, nutrition, exercise and being more physically and mentally en-

gaged. Around 100,000 kids take part in the programme each year across America as well as some schools in Nelson and Manukau, but California-based Rod is keen to see it extended further. “I’ve had some discussions with Nigel Muir from Sport Tasman and have already had great support from Pic Picot and Chris Bowater from Bowater Hyundai.” Sport Tasman chief executive Nigel Muir says that he’s looking forward to discussing the programme further. “We’re certainly supportive and have seen what he’s done with it in the US, which is fantastic,” says Nigel. And, of course, no visit back

home would be complete without visiting some schools. He had visited Hope School on his last trip home in April and was keen to see them again. “I’d seen his programme online and enquired, and he came out and talked to the kids and has kept in contact,” says Hope School teacher Jacqui Wills. Eight-year-old Ellamae Withington says, “I’m glad he came. It doesn’t matter how you do it, it’s just about doing it.” “I liked how he said everyone’s a winner and I liked learning about the running and that finishing is winning and winning is finishing,” says Maggie Paterson.

Outings with friends, having visitors pop in, going to community events, or being part of a club or group, are the things we look forward to in life. However, for older people, these simple human connections and interactions aren’t always that simple. Even going to the supermarket, paying bills or visiting the doctor, the things we don’t relish, can be hard. None of this is new, but the problem has a greater impact than people realise and it’s growing, according to Age Concern Nelson Tasman manager Sue Tilby. “The extent of the problem came out of a survey we conducted last year,” says Sue. Loneliness and isolation were identified as the biggest issues facing older people. Chronic loneliness can increase the likelihood of developing dementia, or suffering a heart attack or stroke. She says that you’re only limited by your imagination as to things to do together. “Age Concern has really inspired me, and they need people and I really like what I’m doing. Doors open for Christmas dinner Judene Edgar Christmas is coming, which means that plans are well underway for the annual Richmond community Christmas dinner. Richmond’s Holy Trinity Church, the “Church on the Hill”, hosts the free dinner in the Richmond Primary School hall to enable people to enjoy Christmas day in the company of others. Now in its fifth year, vicar Susan Gill says that it’s intended for anyone, including families, who don’t have a better option. “It’s about doing what we can to meet the needs of people,” says Susan. “We don’t want anyone to be lonely on Christmas Day. We provide food, company and carols.” This year, Karen Hoddy has taken on the key organising role, but she says that it’s really a team

effort with around 40 volunteers helping collect and prepare food, organise decorations and entertainment, and cook and serve on the day. “We’ve been so blessed by our volunteers who step up and share the workload,” says Karen. Karen says that it’s a real community effort with most churches in the area contributing towards the dinner as well as local market gardeners and growers and businesses who step up to generously support it. The hall fits around 150 people, so Karen says “our greatest challenge is capacity, which is why we require registrations.” Entry is by koha, but Karen says that they haven’t turned people away who aren’t able to contribute. She says that some people have even volunteered to help on the day as their way of contributing.

“We’ve found that a lot of people wouldn’t come if they couldn’t give something,” says Karen. The dinner commences at 11.30am with nibbles and non-alcoholic drinks, followed by dinner at 12 noon featuring new potatoes, roast vegetables, salads, ham and roast lamb, and topped off with a delicious dessert of fruit salad and pavlova. Guests also get to take home a piece of Christmas cake. “It’s a lot of work, but that’s why we have a team,” says Karen. The Richmond community Christmas dinner is Monday, December 25, at the Richmond School hall commencing at 11.30am. You can register and collect your tickets from Richmond Mall service desk, Age Concern or the Church on the Hill, at 544 8844 or email church.onhill@xtra.co.nz.

Local retirement village residents were treated to a classic car display on Sunday afternoon, when a Nelson hot rod club took to the streets for a Christmas Retirement Village Run. Around 28 cars took part in the event, which saw them drive by four retirement villages Oakwoods in Richmond, Ernest Rutherford and Somerset in Stoke and The Wood in Nelson. “It was a one-off thing that we decided to do,” says Cambusters Hot Rod Club member Brenda Ford. “We’re just trying to up the profile of hot rodding in the

Nelson region and get involved in the community.” Cambusters Hot Rod Club has also established a social committee, to brainstorm community-minded events, like the retirement village run, that all the clubs in Nelson can get behind. “It just makes you smile when people are looking at your car and it’s giving them a buzz,” says Brenda. “Personally, I really enjoy doing that type of thing and for them it’s special because these types of cars were part of their every day when they were young.” The group finished its run at Founders Heritage Park with a social gathering.

Just a thought... I sat with a pretty special bunch of people the other day. They are special because they volunteer to do a job which sees them drop what they are doing and go and do things which call upon their training and ability to adapt and make a difference when others need help. They are all fire-fighters. These days when firefighters get the call it can be anything from a fire, to a child with their finger stuck in a drain, to a life-threatening medical event and everything in between. What made this group so special is they also volunteer as Peer Supporters to help fire-fighters to deal with the psychological impacts they face. Fire-fighters go to things which others would choose not to and, being human, they can be affected by what they see, smell and experience. Without a little help they can be affected. These Peer Supporters are not highly trained ‘shrinks’, rather they are fellow fire-fighters who know what it means to be wrenched out of ‘normal life’ and be thrust into abnormal situations. They use the skills they have learnt to help others when they need a little help. They give the greatest gift that cannot be brought and that is their time. As we enter the silly Christmas season, I recall Dr Seuss, saying, “what Rev Martin Harrison if ChristBrightwater Community mas, doesn’t Anglican Church come from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?” (How The Grinch Stole Christmas, 1957). The Christian understanding of Christmas is God became human in the form of Jesus to deliver personally the message God cares. God knew the power of someone who could walk the talk. By Jesus giving his personal time, millions of lives have been changed for good over the centuries. The greatest gift you can give this Christmas is to give your time to others. How can you use your life to support others? If Christmas isn’t found in your heart, you won’t find it under a tree. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13

Winning memories Denise Bensemann, right, receives a picnic hamper from FreshChoice Richmond’s Lynne McPhail last Tuesday. As part of their 60th birthday celebrations, owner Gary Watson offered a hamper for the most interesting story about working or shopping in one of the Watson’s stores. Denise Bensemann was one of Ivan Watson’s original employees, working for him when she was 18 for about two and a half years in the 1960s. Her grandson Reuben has worked at FreshChoice Richmond for five years, carrying on the family tradition. Her story was printed in the Waimea Weekly, October 25, 2017. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

“It’s such a great Richmond tradition, along with the Christmas lights on the giant redwood tree which will be on too.” The festivities kick off at 6.30pm with popular acoustic duo Kramit, followed by 10-year-old Richmond School girl Mia Coldicott and Nelson’s top soprano Allison Cormack, who will be accompanied by Kate Scarlett on piano. At 8pm the Take a Chance choir will lead the choral singing accompanied by local band Soundz of Richmond. “It will be a great mix of traditional and modern family favourites that we can all sing

Washbourn Gardens is set to be lit up by candlelight and song once again, at the Richmond Carols by Candlelight this Sunday. Each year around 1000 people don Santa hats, bauble earrings and their festive spirit, and head down to Washbourn Gardens for a picnic tea, fun family entertainment and, of course, carol singing. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for people to come together and celebrate the festive season,” says Council community partnerships officer Lani Evans.

There will be coffee and cold drinks for purchase, and candles and song sheets will be available for a gold coin donation to the Nelson ARK, a local charity that delivers educational, rehabilitative and integrative programmes that benefit young people and rescue dogs. Carols by Candlelight at Washbourn Gardens is on Sunday, December 17. Pre-entertainment starts at 6.30pm and carolling is at 8pm. All welcome.

Walking into temporary premises after PC Systems’ offices burnt down in April was an unusual first day for technician Mike Terry, but he says that it did help with team bonding. Around 11pm on Friday, April 7, freedom campers called police to report a fire in the Petrie car park in Richmond. While their quick actions led to the apprehension of two youths, 10 and 13 years old, for alleged arson, unfortunately fire services were unable to prevent the spread of the fire through PC Systems’ building. Fire crews battled for three and a half hours to put the fire out, but according to Richmond’s chief fire officer Craig Piner, the fire travelled through the roof and some pieces fell through creating “several separate fires” inside. Owner Neil Albury says that he was “standing out there watching it burn… but by the morning we had a plan.” The building and stock were a write-off, but Neil says, “the biggest saving was that most of our services are cloud-based”. Local businesses rallied around and by Saturday he had secured temporary premises just 30 metres away. They moved into their temporary offices on Sunday, ready for work on the Monday morning. “We begged, borrowed and stole laptops and parts,” he says.

something like, ‘this is a bit of a strange phone call, but our building was hit by arson last night’,” says Mike. “He rang back Sunday night and said, ‘yup, start Monday, it will be great team bonding’.” Mike says that he knew that it would be difficult and fast learning, but he wasn’t going to let that stop him from trying to help.

Under new management Harrington’s Bar 321 is your Richmond bar and restaurant serving up honest food, honest service and a great atmosphere. Harrington’s Brewery has taken the lease back on and have employed Glen Taylor as the new manager. Glen is highly experienced in the hospitality industry having managed bars and restaurants around the South Island for over 15 years and was keen to take on the challenge of transforming Harrington’s Bar 321. “I’ve worked for one company for the last 10 to 15 years. My job role was to take on different bars and restaurants throughout the South Island and help turn them around,” says Glen. “In the years I worked for them, I think I managed around 20 or so of their bars. I really enjoyed the constant change and challenges however, now I have a young family and it’s not so easy to move around as much. It’s a good feeling being able to settle

Proud to supply Harringtons Bar 321

Alongside Glen’s management skills, Harrington’s Bar 321 is also benefiting from a new team and a fantastic new menu that has something for everyone.

The other big change is a revamp of the building itself, which Glen hopes will be done and dusted within two to three months. “We’ve just accepted a painting

quote so we’re looking forward to a fresh new look inside, and there is new signage on the way for the exterior. The transformation we’re undertaking will have a significant effect on the atmosphere inside Harrington’s Bar 321,” says Glen. For those who aren’t familiar with the Harrington’s brand, it started in 1991 with John Harrington and his brewing team, who began experimenting with traditional styles of beer that were less available in New Zealand. Twenty-six years later, Harrington’s encompasses over 15 different beers and ciders that are enjoyed up and down the country. Harrington’s Bar 321 focuses on the Harrington’s range, however, it’s not the only drink you’ll find behind the bar. They stock a selection of mainstream beers and non-alcoholic beverages, and are proud of their extensive local wine list. They even have some slightly obscure drinks for those

They also operate an off-license, so pop in on your way home and grab a rigger of your favourite Harrington’s beer or cider, a bottle of local wine or any other drink of choice. With a designated bar area and separate dining space, there’s plenty of privacy for those enjoying a drink after work, or a dinner with the family. Glen says the team operates a family-friendly environment, with a specially-designed kid’s menu that includes steak with roast potatoes and vegetables or fries and salad, and chicken and bacon fettuccine with creamy pasta sauce. When it comes to their main dinner menu, the kitchen team has pulled out all the stops to offer good honest food that tastes great, such as pork schnitzel, grilled steaks, including the big

Christmas gift appeal will make a difference Simon Bloomberg Milestone Homes’ Make A Difference Appeal received a boost last week when Nelson Netball Centre’s Player Development Programme and Twilight Netball players dropped off a big bundle of presents under the Christmas tree. Milestone Homes is running the appeal again this year, and last Tuesday took

the Christmas tree from the Richmond Mall out to Saxton Field netball courts. Richmond Mall manager and netball coach, Belinda de Clercq, organised the Nelson Netball Centre’s donation to support the appeal. “We started the appeal here in Nelson last year and it went really well,” Milestone Homes Nelson Bays manager Adam Hills says. “It was just out of control -

we got about seven or eight ute loads of toys which was amazing.” Adam says the appeal was so successful, it was adopted this year by Milestone Homes franchises throughout the country. All the gifts placed under the Make A Difference Christmas tree in the Richmond Mall go to the Fifeshire Foundation’s The Big Give Appeal which aims to help

300 families facing hardship in the region. The Christmas tree is located inside the mall near the entrance to Pak ‘n Save and will be there until December 21. People can select a gift tag off the picket fence around the tree and purchase an appropriate gift for a child of a specified age and gender – the presents can be gift wrapped for free at the mall’s help desk before placing it under the tree.

Wishing everyone safe and happy motoring this holiday season.

All Marie Hill wants for Christmas is a home for her family. The 23-year-old solo mum of two has been looking for a rental property for almost a year and a half, but has faced constant rejection. During that time, she and her children, 23-month-old Ashton and 9-month-old Braxton, have been living at Ma’s Place in Richmond. The emergency accommodation provider has been a stable roof over their heads - but now they have until February to find their own place. Nelson Weekly told Marie’s story back in August, as part of the ‘Safe and Sound’ series, but four months on, Marie says “things are worse”. She says she is competing against up to 20 other people at rental viewings, and has even taken her plea to the Prime Minister and former Minister of Housing and Nelson MP, Nick Smith “I just got to a point where I thought, ‘right, let’s get this out there,’ and I’m speaking on behalf

Photo: Kate Russell. of lots of people,” says Marie. Marie went on the Housing New Zealand list last month, but she has been given no indication of how long the waiting list is. She has been told she is a “high

priority”, but her ranking could go up or down depending on who else goes on the list. “They have given me a score and told me that my ranking is really high, but I don’t know if that’s

even going to work.” Marie also scours Trade Me every day and has put the call out through her social media networks several times, but it hasn’t got her anywhere.

“I’ve done everything that I can think of, but there are just so many people looking,” she says. “It’s not getting better and there are many who are in the same situation as me. “Bad credit lets you down, children, the benefit – even though it’s money coming in people still don’t look at you.” Marie says she is looking for a 2-3 bedroom house in the $200 $400 price range and she is open to living in Richmond, Stoke or Nelson. With Christmas fast approaching, and her eldest son’s second birthday next month, Marie dreams of giving her kids a home to create memories in. “We won’t be doing much for Christmas this year and I have to have my son’s birthday party at my mum’s house. Last year we had it at my step-dad’s house,” says Marie. “It’s things like that which are hard. I want to be settled and I don’t want to keep living like this. I’d like to have my own space and fly the coop, but you can’t do that when you’ve got nowhere to go.” If anyone can help Marie and her boys find a home, you can contact her on 0274554845 or marie.cath erine.hill.94.mch@gmail.com

Port races make a comeback More than 100 riders are expected to line up for the day's action with speeds of over 200 kmh expected on the long straight. Adrian says around 60 volunteers help make the day run smoothly and the event gets "outstanding" support from Port Nelson. "We are really lucky to have this event and we need to make the most of it while we still have it. Last year when we didn't run it we had a lot of feedback from people who were disappointed, there was so much of that and a lot of people thought it was over."

The most exhilarating motorbike event ever seen in Nelson is returning to the summer schedule. The Port Nelson Street Races will be held on January 2, returning after a summer off due to upgrades at Port Nelson, the venue for the races. The street races combine the high speed thrills of motorbikes racing up to 200 mph with an unrivalled spectator viewing, in places just a metre away from the action. Organising committee member Adrian Curtis says the street races are one of the most unique racing events in the country. "It's really good for Nelson, but we live in a PC world and while guys going flat out with curves and concrete things is exciting, street racing is maybe something that we won't see forever. Maybe within our lifetimes it will be gone because people consider it too dangerous for the riders. But it's pretty exciting seeing that

speed straights tempered by tight sections that will suit the smaller bikes. "The new track is amazing and it's

really going to even up the field between the big bikes and the little bikes. Supermotrads could be the fastest thing there."

Māori acknowledged in corrected team name Andrew Board Journalist

The Tasman Rugby Union says it’s “proud” to correct its team name by dropping the ‘s’ in Makos to become the Tasman Mako. The dropping of the letter ‘s’ from the previous brand is in respectful acknowledgement of the correct use of the Māori name for the magnificent taonga, the Mako, that is our emblem, said a media statement released this morning. Tasman Rugby Union CEO Tony Lewis says the change has the full support of TRU stakeholders – the Board, staff, Mako players including recent Māori All Blacks, team management, major sponsors and the eight iwi of Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka-āMāui, Ngāti Kuia, Ngāti Koata,

FOOTBALL Tasman United's love-hate relationship with a draw has continued. The national league football side drew 1-1 with Hawke's Bay United in the ISPS Handa Premiership game in Napier on Sunday. Tasman, now in 6th on the ten-team table, had the chance to win the game late via the penalty spot, but skipper Cameron Lindsay hit the crossbar with his attempt.

Rangitāne and Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō, Ngāti Rārua and Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ngāti Tama, Te Āti Awa and also mātāwaka. Mana Whenua spokesperson Barney Thomas says “all iwi are supportive of the proper

usage of te reo Māori me ōna tikanga by the Tasman Rugby Union”. Current Mako head coach,

Leon MacDonald of Rangitāne, and a NZ Māori representative in 1998, 1999 and 2005, welcomes the change. “We pride ourselves as a team that respects our community, and we acknowledge the proud contribution of Māori to our game in Marlborough, Nelson Bays and Te Tau Ihu. For us, we simply see it as the right thing to do in using the Māori language correctly.” New Zealand Rugby Māori Board chair Dr Farah Palmer congratulated the Tasman Rugby Union on the change. “This is a wonderful decision by Tasman Rugby that shows respect for Māori and a name they carry proudly. It is great they have the confidence and support to make a change that enhances their identity and mana in the community”.

RUNNING The annual Jingle Bells Jog and Santa Walk is on this Sunday, 17 December with all proceeds going to the Heart Foundation. Adults and children and even dogs are encouraged to dress up in festive attire and run, walk, skate or scoot from Trafalgar Park to Tahunanui Beach. Entry is $5 per person or $10 for a family and there will be prizes for the best costumes. 9:30am start, with registration from 8:30am.

CLUB CRICKET Stoke/Nayland and Nelson will face off in the final of the Car Company Nelson Cricket club cricket competition despite both losing in their final round robin games of the 110 over competition this weekend. Stoke/Nayland were wellbeaten by a fired-up Waimea Toi Toi United, while Nelson failed to chase down a modest target set by Wanderers. The final will start this Saturday at 11am at the Marsden Rec in Stoke.

WEIGHTLIFTING: Nelson's Abbie Cederman on her way to winning the best female at the New Zealand Masters Weightlifting Champs at Results Gym over the weekend. Thirty-eight competitors from around the country, including five local lifters, took part in the event. Despite winning, Abbie was below her best The Hearne family, from left, Justin, Raiden, Blake and Lisa with the boy’s ministocks.

Keeping up with the Hearnes Jody Scott

Speedway Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Justin “Red Feathers” Hearne hasn’t had much time to rest after retiring from stock car racing -his two boys are keenly following in his footsteps. Raiden, 15, and Blake, 12, are spinning plenty of laps at Mile-

stone Homes Top of the South Speedway in their Youth Ministocks. Raiden picked up his maiden win a few weeks ago, while Blake has completed his mentor programme for new drivers and is now free to race at other tracks. Justin has built Blake’s car over winter and gave Raiden’s an overhaul. The structural engineer

from Trinders also looks after the steelwork on a few other drivers' cars as well. The cars mirror his former Stock car, sporting the Lift and Shift colours on both machines. Raiden carries his dad’s race number 14 while Blake’s is 41. Justin raced for six years and was a member and former captain of the Tasman Thunder stock car

team. Now he’s a Speedway NZ scrutineer, checking cars prior to racing. His wife Lisa was involved in building up and running the popular junior members club. But with both boys racing this season, she is kept busy looking after the cars and boys during race nights. The boys are active away from racing -- Raiden enjoys basketball and soccer while Blake is a keen

boxer and plays rugby. He does a pretty mean haka as well. The boys are looking at racing at the NZ Youth Ministock title at Oxford in May and will continue to race at home with a few trips to the Blenheim and Greymouth tracks. They wish to thank their sponsors Lift and Shift, Jacks Tyres, Oxford Court Motels, Trinders and Nicholson Industrial Contracting.

Triple the triathlon challenge at Rabbit Island Rain, rough seas and a very low tide didn’t look like a recipe for a successful family triathlon, but 78 competitors aged from seven to 72 smiled their way through Sunday’s event at Rabbit Island. The team of Robert Sheridan and his sons Josh and Kalani led the way, with Marlborough teenager Connor Guillemot putting in a brilliant individual performance for second. The event involved a short triathlon, starting with a 200m swim, a 6km bike ride, and then a 1km run. The triathlon was then completed a second and third time without a pause between the various sections. Although 28 individuals took on the full nine stages, another 50 people combined in 18 teams, choosing their own order. Some chose to complete a short triathlon each, while others put a specialist swimmer, cyclist and runner together - each repeating their discipline three times. Although the rough sea could have deterred less confident swimmers, the shallow water and short course

allowed competitors to walk through the roughest sections and was seen as an enjoyable frolic in the balmy water. Hayden Squance ripped through the first triathlon in 20 minutes 30 seconds, matched only by the Sheridan family in 20min 47sec, with Matt Newberry (22.07), Guillemot (22.38) and Glenn Bathgate (22.45). Squance handed over to his father Charlie for the next three stages, while the Sheri-

dan family went on extending their lead, as Guillemot moved into second and Newberry and Bathgate worked hard to hold on to the next spots. Coach Pogo Mcauley took on the swim legs for rising star 14-year-old Luke Clatworthy, who pushed hard on bike and run to move their team into fifth place, ahead of the Marlborough team of Fergus Greer, Gus Morfell and Mark Grammer. Individual competitors Josh

Barber, Marlborough’s Joseph Westend and Wayne Leighton brought up the top ten. Evangelene Craig was the first individual woman, finishing in 1hr 18min 32sec for 16th overall, ahead of Dawn Chalmers (1.23.34) and Carolyn Squance (1.25.30). With the ability to choose their own format a popular option for teams, the race will be repeated in January under the banner of Proper Crisps.

this year and is made up of secondary school aged students from around the Tasman region and Buller. They’ll be getting together closer to their departure date to get a few practices under their belt, although the main aim of the trip is to interact with the local people, learn about their culture and enjoy some friendly competition on the field. “It could be the only opportunity they get to play sport overseas as most trips like this are reserved for representative teams,

be it regional or national,” says Ian. “We also take a 23kg bag full of donations over to Fiji, be it sports equipment, educational equipment or hygiene items. The community hosts us, spends time with us and provides entertainment for us, so this is just our way of thanking them for their hospitality.” Thanks to Ian, many students have had the opportunity to experience a sporting tour in the South Pacific however, this will be the first girls team he has sent overseas.

The week-long tour will be a mixture of activities around the island and games against the local students and the team couldn’t be more excited. Fiji is also keen to see secondary school netball teams visit, giving their players experience for an upcoming South Pacific tournament in 2019. Ian will be working on organising these tours for next year, so keep an eye out on Facebook for any upcoming trips. Fundraising is ongoing for the

Tasman Secondary School Girls team, with their travel package including all trip expenses such as transport, activities, food and accommodation. “The team is always on the lookout for sponsors, so if anyone is interested in supporting them, they are welcome to contact me at bigszs@xtra.co.nz, or people can keep an eye out for car washes, quiz nights, raffles etc. that will be happening around the place up until they leave next year,” says Ian.

Ian Biggs created South Pacific Sports Tours to give students new sporting experiences overseas, which is why the Tasman Secondary School Girls team is heading to Fiji in June next year. “I organise sports trips to anywhere in the South Pacific, kids put their names forward and we form a team,” says Ian. “There’s no criteria they need to meet regarding skill level, whoever wants to go is able to.” The team was formed in January

The Mike Pero Nelson Giants have nailed down one of their big-man spots with the signing of 6 foot 9 inch Tall Black Tohiraukura Smith-Milner. Tohi, a Tall Black at FIBA World Cup Qualifiers 2017 and the FIBA Asia Cup, is a development player with Melbourne United in the Australian National Basketball League. After a successful junior career, where he collected a national Secondary Schools title and played in national age group teams, he played a year at Polk State College in the United States. Chair of the Giants board, Bill Dahlberg, says Tohi has a lot of potential. "The Nelson Giants have a proud history of developing talent and we look forward to Tohi growing his game plus adding some excitement for the Giants' fans,” he says. The news comes a week after the Giants secured the services of Kyle Adnam, who also plays for Melbourne United in the ANBL.
