Fire crews and police ‘stunning’ Colin Williscroft Reporter

colin@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Firefighters and the police were “absolutely stunning” dealing with the effects of the wild fire that began in Pigeon Valley a week ago but whoever opened up gates and let stock out didn’t have a clue what they were doing, one of the first people evacuated from the area says. Merv and Patricia Randle live on Pigeon Valley Road South, about 700m from where the fire started at about 1.20pm last Tuesday. Merv says he could see it from his kitchen window. He heard the volunteer siren go off in Wakefield, then saw a fire engine arrive, followed by a water tanker. “Within an hour, all hell had broken out,” he says. The work done by firefighters and the police since then was hard to fault, he says, and everyone he knows is extremely grateful for the work they had

done under very trying circumstances. Fortunately for Merv and Patricia the south-westerly wind took the blaze away from them. Having experienced bushfires in Australia, Patricia got up on the roof and stuffed towels down the top of downpipes, before filling them with water. She was aware that 80 per cent of homes that burnt down in bushfires caught fire before flames got there and wanted to do everything she could to stop that happening to her home. Because of the wind direction, they went to bed about 11pm marvelling at the pink sky radiating about two ridges away but not too worried about their own safety, despite having seen what Merv says was the “furious pace” the fire travelled. The next morning they woke around 5am to find their deck bathed in a beautiful orange and pink glow. As for the fire itself, it looked like lava coming down a hill, he says.

Excellent, there has been a brilliant response from the community.

There has been a good response, especially with the defence force and emergency services evacuating people calmly and watching over our homes.

Its just wonderful, everyone is just getting on and helping out.

The Police and the Fire Service have done a wonderful job, and the way the public is getting behind them and supporting them is excellent.

While Patricia packed their essentials, Merv, who is retired, went to round up his small mob of sheep. Friends Wayne and Kath Turner from Totora View Road helped shift the mob to the Turner’s place in Totora View. By the time he got back to Pigeon Valley at about 8.15am a cordon was in place and Merv had to wait for Patricia to join him there. They have since been allowed back in three times, essentially to dampen down their house. Merv says the big problem farmers in his neighbourhood had was despite stock being left in paddocks where there was plenty of feed and access to water, some people - he suspected staff from the Ministry for Pri-

mary Industries or the SPCA had come through and opened up gates, letting stock out. It had caused a lot of anger, he says. “There were animals everywhere. Stock was just wandering in and out of everybody else’s stock,” he says. Wayne Ricketts, MPI’s national animal welfare co-ordinator, who has been on the ground in the district in recent days, says some staff did go into the area after concerns were raised about animal welfare. While those staff were there decisions were made to open some internal farm gates, but not external ones, although there was one property where six cattle were accidently let out, which he apologised for. He denied MPI went through opening up gates without due consideration.

Businesses lend a hand Matt McCrorie Armadillos Richmond is one of many Waimea businesses that have come to the aid of firefighters and other emergency support members, providing free meals for those taking a rest from battling the fire that blazed through Pigeon Valley and Redwood Valley over the last week. From last Wednesday, the local restaurant provided meals for emergency service members and support crews, keeping them well fed after days of

working tirelessly to stop the fire. Managing director of Armadillos, Tony Crosbie, says although the effects of the fire are ‘absolutely devastating,’ it’s great that communities and local businesses can come together and get in behind those on the front lines. “These sorts of thing bring out the best in people. They really do. People get together, and they help.” That’s why Tony didn’t hesitate to use his resources to support emergency services crews.

Tony lost two businesses in the Christchurch earthquakes, and says he knows firsthand just how vital the work is that emergency services do. Armadillos partnered with another local business, Westmeats Richmond, to support the fire crews, with Westmeats donating the meat. Westmeats manager Kevin Krammer says “You don’t have to look very far to know of someone who has been affected by this.” Kevin says that in communities like Waimea, “you work hard to look after each other.”

Animals not forgotten SPCA, Helping You Help Animals (HUHA) and Massey University were three of the organisations helping to co-ordinate an animal welfare response to the Pigeon Valley fires. Managed by the Ministry for Primary industries, the organisations have been working to ensure a safe space for people’s pets while they were out of their homes, with Vet nurses and volunteers working in a joint effort. On Monday this week around 700 animals were being housed at the Richmond Showgrounds, with tempo-

rary pet accommodation set up to house animals, in the care of of MPI, SPCA, HUHA and other volunteers. Animal welfare officers were posted at the cordons at each of the four valleys that were evacuated as residents were allowed into their properties to check on their animals. Federated Farmers has opened its Feedline to support farmers affected by the fires and in need of extra feed or grazing. Farmers who are short of feed, or who have feed to donate, can contact Feds on 0800 327 646.

Canterbury farmers showed their support by sending truck loads of hay up on Tuesday.

Wakefield residents Bruce Bogle and Jenny Downey are pleased to be back at home, saying they can finally “start to feel relaxed again.” Bruce and Jenny were among the many Wakefield residents who were able to return home Monday, after being given the all clear from Civil Defence. Incident controller Roger Ball said the decision was made after a careful risk assessment. Residents were told that they had to be prepared to evacuate if conditions changed. Photo: Matt McCrorie.

Fires believed to be deliberately lit Police are seeking information from the public as they and Fire and Emergency New Zealand continue to investigate two fires believed to be intentionally lit. The first was on Rabbit Island, on Wednesday February 6, while the other was on Iwa Road around 2.30pm

last Friday. Both fires were brought under control quickly utilising resources deployed away from fighting the Pigeon Valley fire. The fire Walters Bluff started near the lower end of Iwa Road and spread quickly up the hillside. It had the potential to place

further lives and properties at risk, police said in a statement. They said, as part of their investigations, as part of they want to identify and speak with three young men seen on a bench on the Centre of New Zealand track in close proximity to Iwa Road,

around 1.30pm on Friday. They are described as Caucasian and between 16 and 20 years old. Two were possibly wearing baseball caps and one had fair hair. Anyone with information that could help the investigations should contact police on 0800 08 02 19.

Firefighters ‘livid’ after beach blaze

Volunteer fire fighters were livid after a fire callout off Beach Road in Richmond last Thursday night. Emergency services were called to put out a campfire lit by freedom campers on the beach around 11pm. According to firefighters present, a fire was started by “reckless” freedom campers on the beach. One camper defended the decision by saying it was just a small fire, but fire crew present begged to differ. “From where they were you could see the blaze in Pigeon Valley. I don’t understand how you could look at the flames and decide it was ok to light a fire in these conditions.”

A group of freedom campers early in the morning at the Fittal St freedom campsite, off Beach Road, near where the fire was lit.

Support ‘overwelming’ The public outpouring of support for firefighters has amazed Brightwater volunteer firefighter Steve Foote. Steve, who is one of the many volunteers battling the fire for the past week, says the Brightwater fire station look like some sort of food collection point. “It’s unbelievable what’s turned up at the station. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s quite overwhelming.” He paid tribute to the collective spirit among firefighters who have given their all to try and bring the fire under control. “It’s not just us. It’s every brigade in the region,” he says. “Then there’re all the other people involved who often get forgotten. The helicopter crews, people on the road blocks. It’s been a huge effort from everyone involved. He says morale among those on the front lines was very high. It has been a very tiring time for those fighting the fire, Steve says, with many working 12 hour shifts monitoring hotspots and maintaining the containment line to stop the spread of the fire. “It is tiring, but it’s what we’re trained to do.” It is not just a physical effort that is required, he says, adding it was important firefighters stayed on top of things mentally to stay safe. Some of those fighting the fire took time out from their own businesses to do so, while others had the support of their employers, and Steve says that sort of commitment was important.

Waimea on fire: how i Tuesday 5 February: A fire breaks out in Pigeon Valley, near Wakefield, shortly before 2pm. It starts to spread quickly due to dry conditions and strong winds later in the evening. 12 crews battle the fire overnight. Wednesday 6 February: At 8am a State of Emergency is declared in the Nelson Tasman region. The fire spreads to cover 1870 hectares. Fanned by southerly winds over most of Tuesday night it causes material damage from Pigeon Valley north to the Inland Moutere Highway and Waimea West Rd. Crews are now supported by 10 helicopters and 2 fixed wing

aircraft with heavy machinery on the ground. Over 100 homes are evacuated or self-evacuated in Eves Valley, Golden Hills Rd, Redwood Valley Rd, Malling Rd and Greenacres Rd. It is revealed that a farmer tilling dry fields led to a spark that first started the fire. He is said to be “mortified”. A fire breaks out on Rabbit Island in the afternoon covering up to 10 hectares but is contained by nightfall. The first Hercules aircraft lands in Nelson with more firefighting supplies for crews. Thursday 7 February: The fire still covers around 1900

hectares. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern arrives in Nelson and visits the site. Favourable conditions allow crews to contain the spread of the fire and build fire breaks. Friday 8 February: The fire now covers 2000 hectares. Schools in Wakefield close as a precaution with the town’s residents ‘on notice’ for evacuation The Nelson community starts rallying with donations and offers of help. w it unfolded Three helicopter, two fixed-wing planes, four appliances and five tankers arrive on the scene swiftly to bring the fire under control by 8.30pm. Saturday 9 February: The fire now covers 2100 hectares. Today there are 23 helicopters, two fixed wing planes, one drone team, 29 firefighting crews and around 150 firefighters, 47 Incident Management staff and 23 heavy machines fighting the fire. Residents in the Wai-iti area are told to evacuate. Sunday 10 February: The fire now covers around 2300 hectares.

There are 155 firefighters on the ground today, plus 23 helicopters and 3 fixed wing planes. There is now a total fire ban in place for Nelson Tasman and an emergency directive is issued to prohibit activities that could increase the risk of fire breaking out. A successful controlled burn-off operation was carried out in Redwood Valley. Monday 11 February: The fire is still covering around 2300 hectares. There are now around 190 firefighters, 10 helicopters, two fixedwing planes, 15 heavy machines and 47 Incident Management staff. The animal evacuation site at Rich-

mond A&P showgrounds is currently home to around 500 animals with more coming in by the hour. Evacuated Wakefield residents are able to return to their homes. Tuesday 12 February: The Richmond Civil Defence Centre, which had been based at Saxton Field Stadium, relocates to the Richmond New Life Church at 85 Wensley Road. Firefighters focus on identifying and tackling hotspots, and are likely to remain for some weeks within the fire area. Around 150 staff are working on the ground, supported by nine helicopters and 13 heavy machines (excavators and ‘dozers).

Much of the water being used to fight the fire is being taken directly from the Wai-iti River. Tasman District Council environment and planning manager Dennis Bush-King says teams have dug several trenches in the river to allow water to pool for the helicopters to refill their monsoon buckets. Dennis says at the peak of the fire last week, 180,000 to 190,000 litres of water per day was being used for firefighting ,but that has now dropped. Just after Brightwater, the Waiiti River joins the Wairoa to become the Waimea River. The flow from those rivers helps recharge the aquifers that the council draws water from for its reticulated supply into Richmond, Hope, Brightwater and other areas. “We have been releasing water from the Kainui dam to support river flows in the Wai-iti as flows are very low because of the long spell of dry weather,” he says. Civil Defence have also been filling tankers from council hydrants in Wakefield and

Brightwater for the firefighting effort. Water is being pumped from Brightwater to Wakefield to help support the supply needed for firefighting in that area. “The fire is having an impact on the council’s water supply but obviously water is essential to the firefighting effort and whatever is needed will be provided,” Dennis says. “We’d like to point out that the current hosing ban does not apply to water needed for firefighting or to dampen property to reduce the fire risk. “However, we do need everyone not in the areas under an evacuate or prepare to evacuate notice to continue conserving water and comply with the hosing ban and other restrictions as there is still no rain forecast to give a boost to our water sources.” In the meantime, the council has granted urgent powers to staff to impose further water restrictions on properties connected to the council’s reticulated supply, amid concern a severe drought is likely.

Children to benefit Children traumatised by the fire stand to benefit from an art exhibition being held this Friday and Saturday. The third annual How Great Thou Art exhibition is raising funds through a gold coin entry - to support PACT (Parents and children Together), a community counselling service. On top on that there will be a donation box to help provide counselling for children who have found it difficult to deal with the effects of the fire on their lives. Exhibition organiser Wendy Milson says the idea came from Christine Rutledge, a counsellor who lives in the Redwood Valley area. Christine had seen that some of the children at Appleby School had been traumatised by their experiences and she wanted to make sure there was money for counselling for them if it was needed.

Wendy says children at schools in other areas affected by the fire, such as Wakefield School, would not miss out. The exhibition will feature 16 or 17 local artists who will display their creative work, which includes paintings and photography. Richmond fine art demonstrator and tutor Randall Froude will run two sessions as part of the exhibition, one at 11am on Friday and another at the same time on Saturday. PACT does a lot of valuable work for families in the wider Richmond area, Wendy says, adding that there are a lot of families that need counselling but do not qualify for financial help to pay for it. That is where PACT steps in. She urged people to head along to the exhibition, which is at the Richmond Baptist Church on Friday from 10am to 6pm and Saturday from 10am to 5pm.

professional and volunteer resources, that it would be unfair on the community to go ahead. The volunteers include our own members who have been near the fire ground serving food and working with the animal rescue team”. Kevin says. “Everyone needs certainty, our stall holders, artists and attendees. Above all, we are thinking of the community and would not want the resources that they are relying on to fight the fire and provide for their welfare to be taken away if something goes wrong at our event”. “Can we also apologise to the many people who were planning to come to the festival. The club hopes that they understand why we have taken this decision in circumstances that are beyond our control.” The full proceeds of ticket presales, which are non-refundable, will be donated to the Nelson Hospice Trust, which was to be the main recipient of the festival fund-raiser for 2019.

Don’t fo rge

The Richmond Rotary Club, which has been organising the annual Nelson Wine and Food Festival, has decided to cancel the event this year. The festival was to be held at the Middle Earth Vineyard, Brightwater, this Sunday. The decision came after discussions with Civil Defence and Emergency Management and Fire and Emergency NZ officials on Monday. Club president Kevin Gear said that the organising committee had been considering the merits of going ahead or not ever since the scale of the Tasman forest fires became evident. Following the meeting the consensus was that this year’s festival should be cancelled, he says. “There are two issues really – the heightened risk of a fire at the event and the demands of the event on already fatigued volunteers and the wider community.” “On balance, we think with the increased risk of fire and the stretched

Now most staff are working double shifts to cover the shortage. “It’s a pretty big operation, and we’re looking for about 20 more volunteers to join us.” There are a range of roles availble, from working the tills to helping receive stock, moving furniture or repairing damaged items. A team of volunteers who have all been there for 10 years say there are several factors that have led to them coming back to volunteer year after year, including the great co-workers,

The Richmond Hospice Shop has recently grown and moved into a larger building on the corner of Queen Street and Gladstone Road, but the move comes with a greater need for community support, manager Anette Smith says. The Hospice shop, originally further up on Queen Street, has been running for 10 years.

It has expanded to take on more space and more products, including a large range of furniture. “We didn’t have the capacity for that sort of thing at our previous location, but we’re delighted with the new space we have now,” Anette says. However, the larger space comes with a need for greater volunteer support. The Hospice shop is currently staffed by a team of 64 volunteers, with volunteers usually working a three and-

a sense of community and a great management team. “It’s a lovely place to work, and you feel useful,” one of the volunteers says. “It’s all about giving back to the community, and even in retirement we get to use our skills that we have all acquired over long careers.” Feedback from the community is another factor that keeps the volunteers going. “It’s lovely to know that you’re making a difference,” volunteer Jackie Smith says. at the shop, and has been there since it opened. She polishes all of the silver, and says that it’s “nice to be involved in the community, and to make connections, especially when, like me, you live alone.” Jackie says that the Hospice Shop has been embraced by the community. “It took a while to get going. We had to be well known at the start, and donations were slow when were first opened 10 years ago, but as we connected with the community we grew.”

JIM BEAM WHITE LABEL BOURBON HANDLE

American as apple pie and a testament to quality, tradition and passion, Jim Beam is the best-selling brand of bourbon in the world. Seven generations of craftsmanship go into every bottle, along with corn, rye, barley malt, water, time and pride. Jim Beam is the flagship product of the Jim Beam distillery, founded in 1795, and family operated for seven generations. It was given the name “Jim Beam” in 1933 after Colonel James B. Beam, who rebuilt the business following Prohibition. When you take a sip, you’re savoring a bourbon that has been produced essentially the same way by the same family for more than 200 years. Isn’t it good to know some things never go out of style?

As I write these words the fires in the Pigeon and Moutere Valleys continue to burn, though they are contained to some degree. At times of civil emergencies, but particularly when they are so close to home, I feel very humbled by the way in which so many individuals, groups and organisations come together, to support and be with one another, and provide a concerted response. The offers of practical support, emergency accommodation and emotional care offered by individuals, combined with the co-ordinated response by civil and local authorities, has been outstanding and deeply moving.

It was a reminder for me, in seeking the good of oththat, in even in a fast-paced ers returned. cyberworld of sound bites For me, as a Christian, this and cynicism, that the hu- kind of single-minded desire to see the man spirit flourishes, and best in my neighbour, and can flourish to do good by astonishingly them, reveals well. something in It’s a beautiful reminder too, the deepest aspect of our huin fact it is a man existence. profound tribute, to the unIt expresses to me something sung heroes of about the our world who deeper unity work so tireof the human lessly within our local comcondition that we share with munities’ sysall beings, tems and processes, along bound together by love. How good destiny and dream for hufor them to see their efforts man life and its flourishing.

St Paul beautifully integrates this message in his letter to his community in Corinth. A community beginning to fall apart by internal dispute, St Paul invites them to move beyond the world of appearances to the reality of who they are in love. True love, St Paul tells them, is God’s love, alive within them, expressed most fully in Jesus Christ: a love that is willing to abandon everything to bring true good to those it loves. That kind of love is truly something! And we are nothing unless we have it. I am deeply grateful to all those over this last week or so who have so tirelessly given time, effort, energy to limit the damage of the fire and provide care and support to all those who have needed it.

Keep active this summer A free programme of activities for seniors that will run until the end of March is about to get under way. Research shows that continuing to be active is good for the ageing body, which is why Age Concern Nelson Tasman, with support from Tasman District and Nelson City councils, is putting on a programme of activities this summer for people aged 65 and over. New activities this year in-

clude a guided bike trail and a mobility scooter guided trail. The 18-event programme kicks off on Monday, February 18, with events taking place outdoors across the Nelson Tasman region, including Motueka and Golden Bay. Included are six sessions of Tai Chi for all levels, with professional instructors to guide and assist everyone. There are also two sing-a-

long in the park events. No previous experience is required – just have a go and test out your vocal chords. For the more active there are two guided bike trail sessions on the Richmond Estuary Trail and the Monaco Loop. For walkers there will be seven on offer, from an edible walk along the Orphanage Stream, a Heritage Walk at Isel Park, to a guided walk along the Maitai Walkway in

Nelson. There will also be a mobility scooter guided trail outing along the popular Railway Reserve in Stoke. Full listings are on the front page of the Age Concern Nelson Tasman at www. ageconcernnt.org.nz. Bookings are not required, simply turn up and enjoy. For further information, please call Marrit at Age Concern on 03 544 7624, or email: commu nity@ageconcernnt.org.nz.

Nelson Matters

The fires that have ravaged Tasman and Nelson this last week have brought out the best in our communities. I pay tribute to the heroic work by so many that have prevented the loss of life, saved dozens of homes and provided refuge for animals. I am writing this column from my caravan at the Welfare HQ for Civil Defence at Saxton Stadium where I have been fielding questions and assisting people in getting access for caring for animals, income support, alternative schooling and transport. My strongest praise goes to those directly involved in fighting this forest fire. The volunteers from

our Richmond, Stoke, Mapua, Motueka and Takaka Brigades have been outstanding. So too have our Brightwater, Appleby, Hira, Upper Takaka and and Ngatimoti Rural Fire Forces. These firefighters have been doing the hard, dirty job on the ground. We should be equally grateful for the skilled helicopter pilots in the air and the workers driving the water trucks, bull dozers and excavators that are containing the fire. They have been doing extraordinary hours in tough conditions. I also acknowledge the work of our Mayors, Civil Defence, Police, Army and MPI. This fire is the largest in New Zea-

land in 64 years and is a tough test for the newly merged Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). The confused response to Christchurch’s Port Hills fire two years ago helped drive our former National Government to unite our urban and rural fire services. This response has been much better lead and is a credit to FENZ. I applaud the efforts of National Incident Controller John Sutton and our local Principal Rural Fire Officer Ian Reade. The volunteer effort to support our emergency services has been unbelievable. Red Cross, St Johns, Rotary, Huha and our Marae and Churches have stood out.

544 Waimea Road, Nelson

Thousands of Nelsonians have provided food, accommodation, donations. A huge thank you to those helping at Saxton with care for people and at the A & P Showgrounds for animals. It has been pleasing that there have been no reports of looting of evacuated properties as has occurred in other recent emergencies around the country. Police have been right to throw the book at a couple of arson incidents in the city over the weekend involving waste skips. A place needs to be reserved in hell for those responsible for the suspicious fires on Rabbit Island and at Walters Bluff.

It is good that most people are back in their homes, but we are not yet out of the woods. There are weeks of work still required on this fire. We also require ongoing vigilance on any activities that could spark another fire given the extreme conditions until we get significant rain. My job during this difficult time is to help ensure proper coordination of the many agencies and to be an advocate for affected constituents. If you have problems with income support, accommodation, insurance or animal welfare, get in touch. We can and will get through these awful fires together. Advt.

SPeedway This weekend is the turn of the open wheel brigade to hit the Moutere clay here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway as we host the Waimea Testing Station New Zealand Three Quarter Midget (TQ) Grand Prix. We expect around thirty cars to enter this event as most of the competitors will head north up the state highway after a New Zealand title at Ruapuna in Christchurch the week

before. The super-fast Jeremy Webb from Canterbury would have to be a favourite while Alicia McLauchlan, Dylan StoneCuthbert and Morgan Frost could be amongst the locals who could do well if everything goes their way. A good North Island contingent is also entered with fast cars and drivers competing from Western Springs in Auckland and Napier, both tracks being strong in TQ racing.

A TQ driver gets ready with his race face on. speedway these guys have really been the entertainers at the track this season with great numbers and super close racing. This meeting will also be a good practice run before their South Island championship which will be held here on

There’s a good reason why Nelson swimmers are prominent in the national Banana Boat Series - it’s the constant high level competition, week after week, in the Port Nelson Sea Swim Series. Luke Kelly has been at the top in the national races, but every week he has to battle it out in the Nelson series. Last Thursday, 146 swimmers competed over 1600m or 500m on a perfect night in Nelson harbour. Bendi Kepess took his second win of the series, winning a four-way sprint at the end of the 1600m swim. Racing home in 19 minutes 25 seconds, Bendi had a three

second buffer over Alex Swan, with Fergus Drummond (19.29) third ahead of Luke (19.32) and Oxford Bayley (19.39). Luke remains at the top of the leader board with four races left in the series Abbey Smale has consistently been the top woman this season. On Thursday she took sixth spot overal in 19min 44sec, ahead of top M30-39 swimmer Ben Marshall (19.51), M40-49 leader Terry Bone (20.18) and M50-59 boss Hamish Neill (20.52). Making up the top ten was Sophie Alexander (20.54), the second woman. Zara Aydon (22.21) was the third woman, ahead of F50-59 leader Christina Harris (22.53),

Hannah Martin (23.57), Kerry Mathieson (24.03), Wendy Healey (24.13) and Jude Vincent (24.34). With 12 swims completed, there are only four to go in the series as summer draws to a close, strange though that seems. In the short swim over 500m, Brooke Swan continued to dominate, finishing in 6min 35sec ahead of Alexandra Grenfell (6.45), Jessica Gallagher (7.06) Tom Perkins (7.11) and Corey Tremblay (7.16). Nelson sea swimmers continue to compete at a national level in Mt Maunganui on Saturday, with the Big Tahuna bringing the Banana Boat series to Nelson on March 2.

HAVE YOUR SAY: Proposed Dangerous, Insanitary and Affected Buildings Policy Consultation closes 22 February 2019 Buildings may become dangerous or insanitary, or be affected by other buildings, over their lifetime. This could be caused by natural disaster or extreme weather, because of illegal building work or lack of maintenance. We want your feedback on our proposed Dangerous, Insanitary and Affected Buildings Policy, which outlines how we will identify and take action to address any dangerous, insanitary or affected buildings in Tasman District.

What does the future hold for Kingsland Forest? That’s a question we’re considering this year and will be included in a development plan for this important asset on Richmond’s back door. Fill in the survey on our website to have your say.

Summer Events Guide - have your say Let us know your views on the Summer Events Guide and go in the draw to WIN a $100 voucher for Mitre10. Entries close 28 February 2019. Conditions apply. Due to navigation safety requirements, water users not involved in these events may be excluded from defined areas during activities. Brightwater water leak detection

Bateup Road construction to finish in April

This week we have a specialist company helping us find water leaks in our Council water supplies. Detection Services will have two staff in the Brightwater area this week. They will be listening for leaks and marking up the ground with paint where they find them. Their vehicles have Detection Services written on them and they wear high–vis jackets. They often work at night when it’s quieter and the water use is less. If your water meter is down a private driveway, they may access it, otherwise they will not be coming onto private property. If you see any water leaks on any scheme, please continue to report them to us immediately. The lack of rain has resulted in the ground drying out which has increased leakage in some areas. Leaks are fixed as soon as possible, usually within one or two days. Where there is a backlog of work, the largest leaks are prioritised.

The widening of Richmond’s Bateup Road is progressing well with new fibre-optic cables, a new waterpipe, an improved stormwater system and undergrounding of overhead power lines completed. We’ve been working with the developers of subdivisions in the area to ensure the construction of infrastructure such as footpaths and utilities are coordinated and reduce the need for additional roadworks in future. As a result, we have added some work into the project to construct road access, footpaths, power, water and drainage to service the Paton Rise subdivision. The extra work means the Bateup Road project is now due for completion in April 2019. We appreciate the patience of residents and road users. Under-18 team retains Blair Cup Josh Donnelly’s progress in the pool is phenomenal, Lisa Stove says. Photo: Matt McCrorie.

Josh jumps in at the deep end Matt McCrorie Josh Donnelly is getting ready for a one kilometre swim under the Auckland harbour bridge this April. Josh’s love of swimming is evident the moment you start talking to him, but it hasn’t always been that way. Growing up in Invercargill, Josh never got the opportunity to learn to swim as a child. However, in 2017 he decided it was finally time. Josh went along to the Rich-

mond Aquatic centre with a simple goal, to become water confident for a holiday in Tahiti at the end of that year. When he first got in the pool he struggled to swim a length, and treading water was a challenge, too. “I wouldn’t even look at the deep end.” But with the help of private lessons from coach Jude Vincent, he was able to find his rhythm. “Jude is very technical. She gets in the water with you

and actually demonstrates and helps you learn. It’s hands on. Jude got in with me at the deep end.” When he returned from Tahiti, Josh decided that it was time to set a new goal, an ocean swim. Two years later, Josh is as confident as anything in the water, and it’s hard to get him to stay on dry land. SwimMagic co-ordinator Lisa Stove says that the change in Josh has been ‘phenomenal.’ “I’m blown away, seeing the

change from the first day he got in the water to now.” Josh credited the supportive environment at the Aquatic Centre as one of the key factors of his success. His coach Jude said that “Josh’s progress is a reflection of the hard work and commitment that he’s put in.” “Taking that first step is always the hardest part” Josh says - and Lisa agrees. “The hardest part was getting him in the door.”

The Talley’s Nelson under-18 representative team showed good form recently, beating Marlborough 10-6 to retain the Blair Cup. The Blair Cup is one of five junior representative tennis fixtures over the summer season. Play began with doubles. Both teams played confidently, with some outstanding net play keeping the results tight on either side. James Williams and Sam Inness-Walker proved a formidable pair, winning their match. Rani McGuire and Charlotte Osborn followed suit, also winning, which meant the doubles finished 2-2. Nelson picked it up a notch in the second leg, winning all four boys singles comfortably. Charlotte Osborn followed with a tenacious display to win a tough battle against Lily Parkinson, giving Nelson a two-win edge going into the final mixed doubles round, which proved to be tight. Top seeds Rani McGuire and Alex Brogan lost their match before Sam Innes-Walker and Tina Waine played the match of the day, beating Lily Parkinson and Oscar Sandford-Jury in a tight third set tiebreaker. Charlotte Osborn and James Williams won their mixed doubles comfortably, before Jackson King-Powell and Lucy Gilbert sealed the deal, winning their match to make the final score 10-6 to Nelson.

More experience, More papers, More choice Last month we became the largest group of newspapers here in Nelson/Tasman. The most copies printed and the most newspapers delivered to all homes in our area. By far! That means we deliver the largest base of potential customers than any other media. And we are all owned by local families. We eat sleep and drink in the same towns as you. We know what’s going on and we report it. So when you want to tell the locals something, the choice is simple. Use us. More experience, more papers, more choice. Call our market team today and let us help your business prosper.
