Amalgamation report ‘flawed’, say councillors

Almost willing spring here is a hazard of the job for Sue Ward of The Rosarie. Both she and her husband Jeff are local growers based on the Appleby straight. Originally from Renwick they started their flower growing business six years ago and now supply wholesale flowers to outlets all over the South Island. The most popular according to Sue? “Definitely lilies and roses, after all we are called the Rosarie.” Here she is holding some fresh spring colour with Double Daffadils and Anthuriums. I work at Fresh Choice, it’s my first job and I’ve been there four years now.

I was superintendant of parks for the Tasman/ Richmond district for over 50 years, I loved the job.

The longest time I have been in a job was working for Wilkes; I was with them for 35 years.

I can beat that, I was a psychiatric nurse for 41 years and I really enjoyed it.

The Tasman District Council has completed the purchase of the property at 183 Queen St in Richmond, formerly occupied by the El Taverna bar and restaurant. The property adjoins the existing TDC main office complex. A lease has been negotiated with an incoming tenant and the income will offset the purchase price. The purchase is a strategic move to secure the long term future of the Council’s main office in Richmond CBD as well as an investment in the long term development of the area. “In light of its location it was a prudent decision to purchase the property as it provides an obvious option for future growth,” says mayor Richard Kempthorne. “Regardless of the outcome of the impending union vote in February next this was a sensible decision.”

Ranzau principal moves on after 17 years Barbara Gillham Murray Cain, Principal of Ranzau School, will be greatly missed by staff and pupils when he leaves this week to take up a new role with the Ministry of Education. Originally from Nelson, Murray’s teaching career began in 1972 at Eketahuna Primary School in the Wairarapa. He spent a number of years teaching in North Island schools before deciding it was time to head back “That’s what I did; basically I came home; gave up teaching for three years and drove tours for Newman’s around the South Island. My intention had been to go farming after that, but I got a temporary relieving job at Tapawera, which I enjoyed and I’ve been teaching ever since.” Murray says he has loved working at Ranzau School and says it as a “great school in a great community.” Describing it as semi-rural, Murray believes the local community has the best of both worlds. “It’s rural but you are so close to the facilities and all the things that the urban has to offer. The kids are just three minutes from the town library, the YMCA, the pool it’s all so close.” Murray leaves this week to take up a new part time position as a Senior Advisor for the Ministry of Education.

“I’ll be based in Nelson but the schools I shall be working with will be mainly Blenheim and Kaikoura. The base role is supporting schools and raising student achievement, but outside of that there is a lot more such as supporting schools with their charters, or staffing changes or any issues they may need some help and support with.” While Murray is looking forward to the challenges of his new role he cannot speak highly enough of the pupils at Ranzau School. “The key thing for me are the children we serve, they are dedicated, amazingly well behaved and very supportive of each other and high achievers. So that has to be the thing I look back on with the greatest amount of pride really and to achieve that I have to mention the staff, they work together as a team and make it all run smoothly. “I remember when I started here a rural advisor said to me, enjoy the honeymoon period and get the brownie points while you’ve got them, well I can honestly say my honeymoon period will finish this week. This school, it’s been amazing and I will miss it.” Dave Sampson will take over as acting principal for the next two terms until a new one is appointed. Everyone is invited to a special celebration being held at the Hope Community Church at 6pm tonight to recognise Murray’s contribution to the Ranzau School.

Richmond’s community cop back in town Barbara Gillham Richmond Community Constable, Glen Lloyd Jones is glad to be home after spending the past eight months in the Soloman Islands. “I wanted to go for the experience and I really enjoyed it, but I’m glad to be back with my family.” Glen says he found the Solomon’s very good and believes it’s the news we hear that makes it sound unattractive. “It’s the same wherever you go, you have to get out of that main island and out to the other bits of the Islands, it’s a beautiful place, fantastic. “If you just get stuck in the main place and look around you can think what am I doing here? But once you get out and look around you can see the place is really good. “I found the people were very nice and I really enjoyed everyone’s company that I worked with over there.” Richmond community Originally meant constable Glen Lloyd to be there for six Jones. months, Glen’s time was extended for work related reasons, however, he did manage to have a couple of visits home to see his wife Anne and their five children. “We have five children, three of our own and my two nieces who we look after; the youngest is eight and the eldest 16. “My wife’s really good, when I asked her before I went if it was okay she said yes, go and do it.” Since his return at the end of June, Glen’s been busy settling back into his work and catching up with the local community news. Although he says it’s good to be back, Glen admits he would love to go back to the Solomon’s again should he be needed.

Richmond Unlimited proud of busy year promoting our town The Richmond Unlimited committee have had another busy year promoting the Richmond businesses and is now preparing for its annual AGM and welcoming new members. One of the highlights of the year for the business promotions group was the launch of a new website www.richmondunlimited.co.nz. “The intention of the website was two-fold. It enabled us to give a web presence to every business in the Richmond CBD, and it also enabled us to promote the township of Richmond”, says committee member Judene Edgar. Richmond Unlimited also delivered three fantastic events this year – Richmond Pak n’ Save Santa Parade last November, the Fresh Choice Market Day in December and the Sprig & Fern Summer Fare last March. With the support of these sponsors and so many more, all of these events were a wonderful success says Judene. “With the great community spirit of the Richmond businesses, we dressed up the town for Christmas with some new street decorations we purchased and some beauti-

fully dressed shop windows. A special mention goes to Queen Street Pharmacy who won best dressed window and received a $1,000 advertising prize from Waimea Weekly,” she says. The group has also been working with a number of different organisations to represent the needs and interests of the business community – Tasman District Council with their CBD developments and attendance at the Waimea Business Group meetings, Richmond Police on security cameras, Nelson City and Tasman District Councils on Rugby World Cup/Game On activities, the Tasman Regional Sports Events Trust to support the South Island Masters Games and much more. We have lots of new developments and exciting promotions in line for this year, and with TDC planning major CBD developments, this will be a great year to join the Richmond Unlimited committee, says Judene. Its Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 10 August, 5.45pm at TDC Chambers.

Hunt on for lost church “Have you seen our church?” That is the call from Richmond Church of Christ who is looking for any information regarding their founding facility. With the 100 year anniversary closing in, the church is looking for it’s first ever building, which was formerly situated where the Richmond Library currently sits on Queen St. It was built in 1911, before being sold to Wrighton’s in 1980 and shifting in to a new building on the corner of Croucher and Darcy streets. Pastor Steve Rollo believes the church building is in the Brightwater area and

has come across a possible match to a photo in the church’s possession. But Steve and the rest of the church are seeking any information regarding the church’s history before the 100 year anniversary on September 2. The anniversary celebration will include a vintage car rally around the Waimea Plains, the area the church is believed to be in and where the founding families lived. If you have any information or would like to be part of the centenary celebrations email Steve at richmondchurch@ xtra.co.nz.

Emergency services rushed to Richmond School on Friday. The primary school’s students were treated to visits from policemen, fire-fighters, Medi Max, and other emergency services for its Red Cross/Civil Defence day. Every three to four years Richmond School studies local disasters and the special day, learning how to cope when disaster strikes, concluded the topic.

Just a thought... When recession hits and people lose the job they thought they had for a lifetime, it can be very traumatic indeed. We men are especially vulnerable, as we often associate work with value, and thus it can knock our self esteem. Anyone losing their paid work when they are over sixty, finds it particularly hard, as it is such a hard market to break into despite knowing you have so much experience to offer. Perhaps you owned a strong business, but the reces-

sion has struck a lethal blow to your finely tuned profit margins. Interestingly women who have children almost always face this dilemma in the prime of life. They must decide: do I opt for childcare and carry on? Some do this, others deide to take time off paid work for a season, hoping they can reengage with employment at a later date. In either of these situations, it is critical to remember that you have value as an individual just for who you are and not for

what you can achieve. Christian belief focuses around a strong assertion of the sanctity of Life. Whether you are young or old, strong and bold, or elderly and infirm, whether you can carry logs inside or struggle to get out of bed each day – You are precious to God. Your life is of inestimable Rev.d Allan value and can never be limited to productivity, output, or income Wasley, Vicar level. You are a person worthy of of Wakefield. respect, dignity, and honour. Perhaps the hardest person to convince of that

truth, is actually yourself! What can you do about this? I suggest faith is one of the best means of rediscovering that you are of great worth, made in the image of God, and by God. God doesn’t make Junk, and you remain a Taonga or treasure to God and others. King David prayed “I praise you , because I am fearfully and wonderfully made”. Isaiah wrote: “You are precious and honoured in my sight, and I love you”.

Hunters help keep airplanes safe Hunters are being called in to help control the number of black swans living in the flight path of planes coming into and out of Nelson airport. A hunt last weekend killed 56 birds and various groups reported a significant increase in the numbers of swans in the region. The birds pose a “real risk” for aviation say Nelson Airport. Nelson/Marlborough Fish & Game, who are

tasked with controlling the numbers of game birds in this region, held a successful event last weekend using local game bird hunters to reduce the number of black swan and consequently the risk to aviation. Hunters have been encouraged to target this game bird species during the 2011 Game bird season (May- July), and have been assisted by the provision of some sponsorship from Nelson Airport Ltd. Around 30 hunters took part in the weekend event reducing the local black swan population by 56 birds. Five Canada geese which are recognised as a significant risk to aviation in many countries and are a growing risk in New Zealand were also taken during the event. The reason for the rise in swan numbers in this area over the last few years remains unclear although an increase in estuarine eel grass in the Nelson Haven may have contributed. Whatever the reasons, Fish & Game staff are pleased to have been able to harness the skills of local game bird hunters, some of whom hunt the Waimea Fish & Game Ranger Lawson Davey helping control bird Inlet and top of the Nelson Haven area numbers in the Waimea Inlet and Nelson Haven. Local man builds taxi company from chair up Andrew Board Jimmy Jeffery is a busy man. By day he is the owner and manager of Nelson Bays Cabs, one of the three largest taxi companies in the region (“and the cheapest” jokes Jimmy) and by night he works as a driver for the company, picking up customers all over Nelson until the early hours of the morning. On his days off, Jimmy likes to race his off-road buggy, hunt pigs and dream of getting back on a motorbike. But what makes Jimmy’s story remarkable is that he does it all from a wheelchair. When he was a teenager Jimmy damaged his back riding a motorbike, his doctor told him he had weakened his back and another serious injury could leave him paralyzed. A few years later he was the passenger of a car that crashed, breaking his back and leaving him a paraplegic. Jimmy, who now lives in Stoke, but runs his company from its Wakefield office, says it was a tough time. “I was definitely gutted, I didn’t really believe it, I thought ‘nah, it’ll come right,’ as you do when you’re young.” After several years of recovery, which included spending his 21st birthday in Burwood Hospital, Jimmy was encouraged by ACC to get back into the workforce. The jobs they suggested involved sitting in an office, something Jimmy was keen to avoid. “I’m an outdoors man, always have been, the

idea of sitting in an office all day didn’t sit well so I started to try and find something else.” He asked if he could be a taxi driver to which he was told he could try but there was no other paraplegic taxi driver in the country and it was unlikely he would gain the necessary medical certificate. But he did in a canter. Jimmy then got to work for a mate who owned a shuttle business. When his mate wanted to start a taxi company Jimmy bought half of the fleet he needed to get it off the ground. Four months later he bought the other half and has spent the IN THE HOT SEAT: Nelson Bays Cabs owner Jimmy Jeffery has grown past five years building it into an extremely suc- his taxi business while keeping busy hunting pigs, and driving his offroad doom buggy. Murchison, Wanderers set up epic final Two underdogs, two country teams with great forward packs and two tough semi final wins – but only space for one team to be called champions. Murchison and Wanderers will do battle for Car Company division two glory this Saturday after they both overcame their more-fancied rivals in horrendous conditions to book their spot in the final. Murchison beat Waimea Old Boys at Jubilee Park after getting out to a 10-0 lead early in the second half before holding on at the death to a two-point gap and earning their spot in this weekend’s final. Taylor’s Wanderers won by a bigger margin, but only just. The blue and gold machine kicked an early penalty and defended stoically to defuse wave upon wave of attack from the defending champion Marist side. Wanderers went on to win the match at Tahunanui, 3-0. The results set up an epic clash in Brightwater with Murchison and Wanderers going head-to-head for this season’s championship. Wanderers manager Fraser Lochhead says his team is under no illusions how tough the game will be this weekend. “They will be furious. They will be hitting rucks and mauls and will grow again this week and we need to as well.” Wanderers won the last game between the two sides when it went down to Murchison and ruined its club day. The southern boys will not have forgotten and Fraser says the message this week is simple: “It is going to be a toughie”. Kick off for the big game is at 2pm, it is tentatively scheduled for Centennial Park in Brightwater, but if rain this week continues it will be moved to Lord Rutherford Park, also in Brightwater. Either way it will be a cracker.

Waimea Old Boys 2011

www.wobrfc.co.nz

Waimea div 2 knocked out of semi, thirds march on Three of the past four years Superliquor Waimea Old Boys has won the Car Company second division and after it beat defending champs Marist last Saturday the signs were pointing for another strong finish to the season. But along came the rain and a determined Murchison side that out-passioned Waimea and ended its hopes of another title. The 10-8 loss at Jubilee Park singled the end to a miserable day for the club, with the division three side the only team to pull out a win for the club. It beat Marist by 36 points to remain unbeaten and on top of the third division table. While across town, Stoke beat the Waimea women’s side. The focus of the day was at home though where Waimea, frustrated by a lack of running opportunities, saw a strong Murchison pack dominate the first two thirds of the game. At half time Murchison were up by seven and minutes into the second half extended that lead by three. Waimea fought back late in the second half thanks

to a try by Cam Salton and penalty to Paddy Smith and in the dying moments had the opportunity to steal a late win when it was awarded a penalty. But Paddy couldn’t convert and Murchison held on for a famous victory. Waimea captain Scott Lines says it was a disappointing way to end the season. “At the end of the day we were beaten by a team that wanted it more. They came after us and really took it to us and dominated from outset. We didn’t deserve the win.” The loss ends the side’s season and the focus will now be on the women’s and division three teams. Both sides are heading on big bus trips this Saturday with the women off to Blenheim to take on Central, while the thirds head to Tapawera. For Waimea rugby fans there will still be action at Jubilee Park though, every Saturday younger members of the club turn out and play for the JAB at various times. Club secretary Aleisha Hart says people are always welcome to pop down and support the next generation of Waimea Old Boy stars.

Nelson rep netballers earn tough wins Nelson hosted teams from Marlborough, Motueka, Golden Bay and Buller at the Nelson Age Group Tournament in changeable weather conditions at Saxton Courts on Sunday. Nelson was represented by Under 17, Under 15 and Under 13 and Developments teams in all three age groups. The Nelson Under 17 team made every post a winning one as the recorded three wins from three. Playing for the Wratten Cup against Motueka, Nelson displayed well drilled skills through court to take the game 49 – 12. Coach, Sam Lowe was able to make a number of changes through the game which settled well and lost nothing in doing so. Goal shoot Maddison Billens was an excellent target and was strong at the post while returning commendable statistics. Rosa Edwards worked well through court at goal attack and moved the circle well to convert her fair share. Ella Marwick was a good link through court while at centre and at wing attack found great position on the circle edge for the optimum feed. In their game against Marlborough for the Healy Shield Nelson’s instructions were simple – “Everyone on defence”. The girls carried out the instructions to the letter, with everyone gaining tips and intercepts. Whitney Orange and Ashleigh Laing shared the wing defence bib and applied considerable pressure on the outside of the circle which allowed the circle defenders to pick up the intercept ball. Nelson’s transitional play was also exceptional as they switched quickly from attack to defence and vice versa. Goal defence, Jordon

Webby had a huge say in the proceedings, she read play exceedingly well which enabled her to pluck off a number of well timed intercepts. Whitney Orange found herself in the unaccustomed position of goal attack in the game against Nelson Under 17 Development. She handled it with aplomb, cutting the top of the circle, she was able to re-offer and converted 12 from 14 attempts in the 44 – 22 win. Stand in coach for the Nelson Under 15 Development team Anne Wicken said she was thrilled with the girls. Although recording one win and two losses Anne said the team were totally focussed and were accommodating to positional changes. Nelson accounted for Marlborough B 29 – 17 with some great circle defence by Annelise Van Zoelen, who toiled for the entirety and hunted for the intercept ball. Nelson Development lost to Nelson Under 15 however they really stepped up against Marlborough and although they lost by eight, they can be proud of their efforts. Goal attack, Keilamarita Pouri – Lane took on a hefty work load through court and was effective in slotting the goals while Abbey Franklin moved nicely to make an impact off the bench. Jess Matthews had a sound showing with both the WD and WA bibs while Ruby Jensen had a busy day donning all three mid court bibs. Kea McGuinetty applied considerable pressure at wing defence to gain good ball. Nelson Under 13 had a two win and one loss record. Although Nelson defeated Marlborough at the recent Top of the South Tournament in Blenheim, the tables were turned this time around. Nelson recorded

convincing wins over Buller (38 – 8) and Motueka (45 – 10). Coach, Kathryn Orange said she was pleased with her team’s progress, however there is still a bit of work to do on passing. Ariana Tekawa Wiremu had impressive outings at goal shoot, goal attack and wing attack while Poppy Restieaux converted 14 from 17 in the Marlborough encounter. The shooters received some quality feeds from Megan Stack who worked hard to hit the circle edge. Merekara McGuinetty and Caitlin Delany played great defence, they hunted for every scrap of ball and rebounded well to deny the second opportunity. Nelson under 17 player Ella Marwick looks to claim possession at Saxton Field.

Local bowler wins national title It was a long time between drinks, but Club Waimea’s Lyn Sloper is the Clubs New Zealand indoor bowls champion, her first national title in 26 years. Lyn won both the single and triples titles at the Clubs NZ women’s indoor bowls championship finals held at Club Waimea in Richmond last week. She went through undefeated and came out number one out of 212 competitors. “I kept thinking every game, this will be it, this will be it. I still can’t believe Club Waimea indoor bowlers Betty Henderson, Jean McKenzie, Lyn it,” says Lyn. “I think I’m Sloper, Pat Slade and Linda Carrick.
