While the cars were on a slightly smaller scale, the action was just as furious as the South Island Off-road Radio Control Championships came to Nelson at the weekend. Continued on Pg 2.

Drunk drivers four times over limit Erin Bradnock A drunk driver is lucky to be alive after he lost control of his motorbike and crashed into a fence, the Nelson District Court has heard. Brightwater man Tyron Callaghan, 51, on Monday pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with

excess blood alcohol. According to the police summary of facts, Callaghan had failed to take a right-hand bend on his motorcycle as he exited Mount Heslington Rd in Brightwater on 1 August, at about 3.30pm. Callaghan then lost control of his bike and hit a fence. He was driven home by some

neighbours while an ambulance and the police were called to his home. Upon arrival, police noted that Callaghan had displayed signs of recent alcohol intake. A blood sample taken showed Callaghan’s blood alcohol level was nearly five times over the legal limit at 249mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The legal limit

is 50. Callaghan claimed to the police that he had drunk just one pint of beer an hour before getting on his bike that Sunday afternoon. Callaghan suffered from injuries as a result of the crash, however, his lawyer Mark Dollimore told the court he had made a “remarkable recovery” since the

incident. Judge Jo Rielly noted this was Callaghan’s fourth conviction for similar offending over a period of 32 years, the last being in 2015. “It is concerning that you appear before the court again especially

He was also instructed to attend an assessment for alcohol use and will hold a zero-alcohol license for three years. He was ordered to pay a blood analyst fee of $111.19. Mark Stephen Nichols, 44, was another Tasman man convicted for driving with excess blood alcohol levels in the court on Monday. According to the police summary of facts, Nichols was driving along the Wakefield-Kohatu highway near Norris Gully on 17 September shortly after 1.40pm. Police were informed by a member

There were thrills, spills and plenty of skills on show at the Richmond A&P Showgrounds as drivers duked it out to be crowned king of the radio-controlled car. Neil White took out the 1/8th Nitro Truggy, while Jayden Jamieson won the 1/8th Nitro Buggy. Organiser Mark Johnston also took home gold in the 1/8th Electric Buggy. Mark says they we were fortunate to get the green light for the event with Covid restrictions. “That stopped around 12

racers’ coming from the North Island, which was a shame, and with weather being so variable, we were stoked to get the event completed successfully.” Nelson is also set to host the New Zealand Championships from February 10-13. A hobby for anyone from ages 7-60, Mark says anyone is welcome to give the sport a go. Upper Moutere fire chief Fred Ewers says the crew are disappointed and “annoyed” to discover the theft. Photo: Erin Bradnock.

$25k in gear stolen from volunteer fire station More than $25,000 of life-saving gear has been stolen from the Upper Moutere volunteer fire brigade. The burglary is believed to have occurred sometime between 30 September and 3 October, where the offender(s) broke into three separate buildings at the Moutere Highway station. Brigade fire chief Fred Ewers says their gardener noticed some windows open when he was mowing the lawns early last Sunday morning. The team discovered that their thermal imaging camera, worth more than $25,000,

a torch, and a self-contained breathing apparatus had been stolen. The stolen thermal imaging camera helps firefighters to find people trapped in buildings, identify hot spots and help search for people following car accidents. A box of Coca-Cola cans was also stolen from the station's fridge. "It's very disappointing that someone would break into a community asset where everyone gives up their time to help people and the community," says Fred.

The offender(s) left behind broken windows and damaged the station’s shed door. They also unplugged the station’s generator and left if on the lawn. Police say enquiries into the incident are ongoing. They are interested in hearing from anyone who might have seen anything suspicious in the area during the reported times. Anyone with information, which could assist in the investigation is encouraged to contact Police by phoning 105 and quoting file number 211003/4254.

Four sisters take leap of faith Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

When Emily Milson unwrapped her 21st birthday gift from her parents, she never dreamt it would end with her jumping out of a plane … along with her three sisters. “I’ve always wanted to do a skydive, so when Mum and Dad surprised me with one for my birth-

day, I was beyond excited.” The youngest of four girls, Emily, from Hope, set about planning a date to do the jump with Skydive Abel Tasman. “I think my enthusiasm rubbed off on my sisters as, in a matter of hours, we’d all decided to do the jump together.” Taking the plunge last week, Julia, 28, Anna, 27, Sophie, 23, and Emily all bundled into the plane together at the airfield near Mo-

tueka for the 12,000ft jump. Their parents watched from the ground as the plane lifted up into the sky. “I was buzzing the entire time and watching my sisters fall out of the plane before me was such a vibe,” Emily says. When it was finally her turn to jump, she says she was terrified when her legs were dangling out of the door of the plane. “I was sat on the edge of the plane,

door open, and the instructor pushed forward and suddenly we were freefalling. It was, for real, the best experience of my life.” She says that it’s made her want to do at least one skydive a year, but one of her sisters isn’t so keen. “It was only at the bottom when I started saying I wanted to do it again that Anna was, like, ‘erm, nope’. But the rest of us are so into it now.” Her mum, Wendy, took having

her four daughters jump out of a plane all in her stride. “I knew what to expect as I’d done a skydive for my 50th, so I was actually more excited to see them land. Then you know they are all safely back on the ground.” She says the only one in their family who hasn’t done a jump yet is dad Owen. “With Christmas coming up, you never know, us girls might just buy him one next.”

Safety fears on Brightwater street Jo Kent Residents in Brightwater’s Hollybush Drive have highlighted their concerns about street safety after another pet was hit and killed by a speeding car last week. Gordon Suddaby, who has lived on the street for nine years, says the cat was run over outside his house and highlighted an issue which has been obvious for some time. “The speed that traffic drives down Hollybush is made more serious because it seems to be a shortcut between State Highway 6 at the Rutherford Memorial and Waimea West Road.” Many young families live on the street and Gordon is concerned the next victim could be a child. “Cars go hurtling past, well over the 50kmh limit because it’s being used as a cut through. All the pets who have been killed have been ‘hit and run’ situations, so how long before it’s a child?” Gordon took his concerns to Maree Dunlop, the Waimea coordinator for Top of the South Neighbourhood Support. She then involved Mike

Gordon Suddaby has lived on Hollybush Drive for nine years and fears for the safety of local kids. Photo: Jo Kent. van Enter - a senior transport engineer for Tasman District Council. Mike was quick to agree that Hollybush Drive seems a likely route where traffic would ‘cut through’ the residential street and suggested some future changes. “A speed table, such as the ones on Starveall Street, are what we would install to reduce speeds and discourage people driving through.” He says council supports neighbourhood interventions like this which aim to reduce vehicle numbers and speeds for a safer environment. The council has allocated an annual budget for these initiatives. This is the

first year such funding has been made available. “Unfortunately, this year’s budget is currently fully committed,” Mike says. “We do regularly reassess where our next priorities are, so I have added this to our prioritisation list.” The first neighbourhood which was looked at for 2021 was the Croucher/D’arcy Street neighbourhood in Richmond. “This was selected as it is a popular walking and cycling route through this neighbourhood from the Salisbury Road schools to the town centre,” Mike says. “Because of this we were successful in gaining 90 per cent funding

from Waka Kotahi.” He says the second neighbourhood TDC is working with is Crescent Street to Squire Way. “This came about via multiple reports of speed, and it is also a neighbourhood where walking or cycling to school or the town centre is difficult due to Wensley Road being a very busy, narrow route.” He says completing these projects is likely to take two years, fitting within the budgets. Gordon says that while it’s understandable the budget has already been allocated for this year, he hopes that Hollybush makes it close to the top of the list for next year’s allocation. “At what point would Hollybush hit the top of that priority list? Do we have to wait until there’s a serious accident?” He suggests that while residents wait for a more permanent solution, something temporary could be put in to try to help reduce speed. “We’d like to see some speed cushions put down, like the ones on Salisbury Road outside Waimea Intermediate, but I guess we’ll just have to

NEWS Car crashes at Wakefield cemetery: Police were called to St John’s Church in Wakefield in the early hours of Saturday after a car lost control while driving through the church cemetery, ending up in the creek at the bottom of the hill. A police spokesperson says three people fled the scene on foot but were soon located with the assistance of a police dog. The incident happened just hours before the church’s 175th anniversary celebrations were due to take place. No one was hurt in the incident, but several headstones were damaged at the cemetery. Police say they are considering charges. Mask Carnivale is cancelled: The annual Mask Carnivale, part of the Nelson Arts Festival, has been cancelled. Local schools had been working on their masks for months and were excited to take part in one of the region’s biggest community events. “It’s with heavy hearts that we are having to make further changes to what the Nelson Festivals Trust is able to deliver in 2021 while keeping our community safe,” chair of the Nelson Festivals Trust Brent Thawley, says. Art teacher at Waimea Intermediate, Emma Panting, says the students’ work won’t be wasted. “We will just look ahead to our WIS Arts Celebration, held at the end of the year, where we will still showcase our students’ wonderful creative efforts digitally or with a live audience.” Low emissions in the region: Tasman and Nelson share the second lowest emissions of any region in New Zealand. This is according to Stats New Zealand which says that, in 2019, emissions in the region decreased by 5.1 percent, while nationally emissions increased by 2.1 percent.

Love of Lego goes on show Erin Bradnock

Self-confessed “Lego nerd” Sam Currie is getting his build together for this year’s Top of the South Brick Show next month. This year’s show is a fundraiser organised by the Nelson Brick Club to help fund Motueka High School’s coding and robot course. A college science teacher by day, Sam Currie is one of about 15 Nelson Brick Club members who will be contributing to this year’s show. Sam has been a part of the club, that has nearly 60 members in the region, for about four years but has had a lifelong love for Lego. “I was completely mad on it as a kid,” says Sam. After a stock take a few months ago, Sam says he has accumulated

more than 150 sets of Lego, meticulously organised in a dedicated space that his wife and three children have affectionately labelled as “the Lego room”. “If a young Sam was in this room, he wouldn’t know what to make of it. He’d probably sit down and get into everything.” He estimates his Lego collection to be worth about $15,000, with some of his sets now worth triple what they were bought for in the 1980s and 1990s. One toy, a limited-edition UNICEF Lego van released in 1985, can now be sold for more than $2000 and that's just for sets without the box. For this year’s brick show Sam dreamed that his project, three years in the making, would be

completed. The “mothership” build is to be an ode to the 1990’s “M-Tron series” - the most beloved set from his childhood. However, the project has seen many redesigns and Sam decided to add a motorised lift to build. So, it's looking like the “mothership” will have to wait another year before seeing the light of day. “As it keeps getting bigger and bigger, and heavier and heavier, it probably won’t be ready in time for the show.” Instead, Sam is getting to work on his ‘plan b’ build, a series of motorised trains, including some of his own design for Lego fans to ogle. The sixth annual Top of the South Brick Show is coming to Motueka Memorial Hall 13 to 14 of November with a gold coin entry.

CIRCUS IN THE FAMILY: Clown Ozzy Brophy, Ryder Webber, 7, Amelia McNaughton, 12, D’Artagnan Webber, 4, Rosie Webber, 6, and Kaleah Webber all love the Moscow Circus life. As a 7th generation circus child, Rosie has already performed the trapeze in some shows. Ozzy, a 5th generation performer, says while a lot of performers are born into the circus, there are still those that “run away to join”. Plans for Richmond’s big events well under way

Jenny Nicholson The success of Richmond Unlimited’s Halloween festivities over the past few years has contributed to it being cancelled this year. With an increase of about 200 people involved in the organisation’s ‘Ghost and Goblins’ event, numbers hit 1000 last year. Event organiser Charlotte Bidlake says, with the uncertainty of when we would be in Alert Level 1, and the challenges around altering the event to suit Alert Level 2, they had to prioritise other events, including the Pak’nSave Richmond Santa Parade and the Richmond Market Day. It is still a busy time for Charlotte, as she hands over the reins to new marketing coordinator, Sheena Murtagh, who took over the role at the start of October. Sheena has previous experience in marketing and sales at Christchurch Adventure Park and as consumer marketing manager for Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism. She moved to Richmond two years ago and says she is thrilled to find a part-time job that fits her skills and experience. “Charlotte is leaving the role in a great place with events coming up,” Sheena says. With the Pak n’

Save Santa Parade coming up on Sunday 28 November, registrations for floats are coming in. Sheena is looking for further registrations and pre-parade entertainment. Bookings for Market Day, which will be held on Thursday 30 December, are going well, with slots for food vendors now closed. Stall holders from around New Zealand have booked but registrations are still welcome. “It’s a day that works really well for our situation because we have a lovely brand-new main street, full of retail and hospitality that can join in with the market atmosphere,” Charlotte says. “All the domestic visitors at that time of year and people looking for things to do mean it’s one of the busiest days.” There were plans for a ‘Queen Street Quest’ in April, but that was cancelled due to Covid-19. The event is a family challenge with similarities to the Amazing Race or The Block. Sheena is hoping they will be able to run it next year, with a decision made in the new year. Speedway appoints complaints rep Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

For the very first time the Nelson Speedway Association has employed a community liaison representative to deal with any local concerns by families living close to the track. Land use consent to operate the existing speedway at Lansdowne Road was granted in December. Permission has been given for 15 race days, two practice days, and one public fireworks event to be held from 1 October until 30 April each year. As part of the compliance process, the speedway has appointed Kimble Rawson to handle any complaints and communication should now be directed to him as opposed to Tasman District Council. “I’ll be the first point of call for any issues the public may have resulting from speedway events going forward.” TDC says the community liaison role enables the consent holder to take active engagement with the community and any concerns they have during the speedway season.

Nelson Speedway Association has employed a community liaison representative to handle local concerns. Photo: Nelson Speedway Association. Principal planner resource consents, Alastair Jewell, says the purpose of an internal representative allows the consent owner to take responsibility of its noise management. “Fundamentally, the council wants to step back from being the first point of contact for noise complaints involving the consent holder,” Alastair says. “Instead, it is hoped that the Speedway will self-regulate in meeting the consent obligations. TDC team leader environmental health, Daniel Winter, says the council remains involved in terms of monitoring and reviewing the consent conditions, as well

as responding to any direct complaints made to the council. “The onus is primarily on the consent holder to operate within the terms of their consent. The community liaison role provides the consent holder with the opportunity to resolve initial complaints instead of escalating straight to council.” As part of the resource consent, speedway will be providing a noise and traffic management plan to TDC to ensure guidelines are adhered to. “We’ve also had to pay for and install noise control meters to make sure that we are within the agreed limits,”

Kimble says. “We want to work with the public to make sure that we can keep operating this asset to the local community.” He says speedway brings in much-needed revenue to the region in terms of accommodation, food and general spending from competitors as well as spectators. He says speedway is a familyfriendly event. “We are looking forward to the start of the season which is due to be on Saturday 16 October, but we can only go ahead in Level 1, so it could well be delayed.” Kimble can be contacted at kjrawson@xtra.co.nz.

Lack of qualified staff opens doors for apprentices Jenny Nicholson A shortage of qualified staff in the trades sector has increased the amount of apprenticeships on offer as businesses struggle to fill vacancies. Trade Me Jobs sales manager Patrick Cairns says Nelson Tasman saw a 44 per cent increase in the number of job listings in the trades and services sector in the third quarter of 2021 compared to the same period last year. He says wages for the sector have also increased, up 8 per cent on the previous year. Scott Construction operations manager Tyne Seward says they are constantly looking for qualified staff. In the meantime, they are training about five apprentices a year. “We have 23 apprentices at the moment,” Tyne says. NMIT managed apprentice learners have also increased from 266 in 2017 to 370 this year. NMIT chief executive Wayne Jackson says the lift in figures for new apprenticeships can also be attributed to the introduction of the Government’s Targeted Training and Apprenticeship Fund (TTAF). This aims to

NMIT is expanding its construction training facilities and has the capacity to take more learners in trades next year. Wayne says learners should enroll early to avoid missing out. Clayton Anderson was studying for the New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry (level 4) at NMIT when a position came up with Gibbons Naylor. Trades Academy tutor Rich-

ard Shepherd had identified Clayton as a student with a lot of promise and recommended him for the job. Clayton says he really enjoyed learning new practical skills at NMIT. Scott Green started an apprenticeship with DR Build soon after leaving school. “An apprenticeship is good because it gives us a trade,” says Scott. “It focuses on good quality work and teaches us to do everything well.” Tim Miller Plumbing’s Anne Miller agrees there are less qualified tradesmen avail-

Tom’s walk with Sir Ed Jenny Nicholson Tramping into Hopeless Hut with Sir Edmund Hillary was just part of the job for Tom Paterson. Sir Ed was opening the new hut, and Tom was working as a ranger for the Department of Conservation in the Nelson Lakes area. “It was an interesting weekend,” says Tom. “Sir Ed was a Tom Paterson as a new ranger with Nelson Lakes chief ranger George Lyon very dynamic person. Tom says there were many rests and anecdotes as they walked the track. Tom, who grew up in Murchison, has now laid down some of those memories in a new book ‘As It Was’, which chronicles his time working for DOC and for the Forest Service. Born in 1941, he left school and worked on a farm for a short time before joining DOC in 1965. He worked on the initial development of many of the

In 1968, he was part of the team that replaced the initial hut at Lake Angelus, which has since been replaced again, and was involved with building huts at Blue Lake and John Tait. During the depression, miners and early trampers built tracks and huts in the Lake Rotoroa region. Tom was part of a team that stayed in these primitive huts while working to reopen the tracks.

Sir Edmund Hillary wasn’t the only well-known person Tom met. As part of his job, he also met royalty, including Prince Charles along with politicians such as Winston Peters, whom he took fishing. Winston caught a blue cod, but unfortunately it was only about six inches long. Tom snapped a photo and sent the picture to Parliament House. Winston sent a note back saying “everyone was suitably impressed with the size of bait I used”. Tom’s book is available from Copy Press.

It’s time to celebrate all the wonderful people who help make Nelson Tasman a great place to grow old in with the upcoming AgeConnect Champion Awards. The awards highlight the work done by individuals, local businesses or organisations who help support the region’s ageing population. AgeConnect group co-ordinator, Marnie Brown, says nominations are public and can be made by anyone. They can be for ongoing services provided or inspirational acts of kindness for the elderly. “Everything from volunteering, having an age-friendly workplace, or employing people over 65 - whatever it is, we want to raise awareness and thank them.” There are five champions award categories: Community Connections, for a group that’s providing programmes, education or activities for older adults; One Person Makes a Difference, for individuals who have done good; Intergenerational, for young people in

Jesse’s jiu jitsu journey to health In the leadup to I Am Hope’s Gumboot Friday on 5 November, Waimea Weekly is talking to young people and change-makers about their mental health journeys. This week Sara Hollyman speaks with Jesse Fitzwater. When Jesse Fitzwater lost his best friend to a drug overdose, he knew his lifestyle had to change. He was just 21-years-old, using drugs and struggling to find a solid direction in life. However, six years on, his life couldn’t look more different. “I always had a fire inside me and I didn’t have anywhere to channel it. When I lost [my friend], I started going to the gym.” Initially, Jesse just wanted to get bigger, but soon he noticed his mental state improving. Then he found jiu jitsu. “I took a liking to it straight away and it surrounds you with positive people and role models.” The sport’s core philosophy is to manipulate the opponent’s force against them. Jesse says it involves discipline which has helped keep him on the right path. He now trains at least four times a week as well as doing Muay Thai and weightlifting.

“There’s something really humbling about jiu jitsu, I think it’s the same for a lot of guys. You’re full of testosterone and walking around like you’re sort of invincible. Jiu jitsu teaches you how to face defeat and overcome things.” Through Tukaha Jiu Jitsu Nelson, Jesse was introduced to the team at the Male Room where he now manages the newly opened Whare Haumaru. “I am so grateful for the opportunity at the Male Room to use my own life experience to help improve the lives as others, it’s really changed my circumstances for the better.” Jesse says, even now, he finds it difficult to talk about mental health and problems but encourages those struggling to try and find something that sparks a fire inside them. “It’s quite a hard thing to bring up. I struggle definitely to talk about it especially when you need to have that level of trust in someone, but I think finding something, it

a big role in mental health. “You start eating right and treating yourself right, you’re just generally in a better head space and you can deal with things a lot more.”

Money can’t usually buy this once-in-a-lifetime tugboat experience, but one lucky bidder at the Walk With Us auction fundraiser will take home just that. Port Nelson have donated the big-ticket item to help raise money for the charity, which gives school shoes to families who struggle to provide them for their children. Communications and engagements manager Jessica Ammundsen says the tugboat experience isn’t something which is normally available to the public, so the only way to get on

board is to bid at the auction. “This is a chance to experience real life aboard a tugboat and really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We only do six of these trips a year.” The lucky bidder can choose up to three friends to go with the tug master while they guide the vessels coming into port. Other big-ticket items include helicopter rides, motorhome rental and a stay on D’Urville Island. Charity auction dinner cancelled

exploring our

Nelson’s annual Big Brother Big Sisters fundraising auction has been cancelled for the second year in a row. Big Brothers Big Sisters Nelson Tasman Board chair Richard Kempthorne says the board made the difficult decision to move the auction online after last week’s Alert Level announcement. “We all had a zoom together. By the time the announcement finished we were quite unclear about what the rules meant and decided it was the best option considering numbers and spacing concerns,” Richard says. Pre-Covid, BBBS annual auctions would raise upwards of $50,000 says communications coordinator Cushla Vass. “The online auction last year didn’t do as well as the dinners usually do. We managed to raise $40,000.” Richard says the auction helps raise crucial funds for the BBBS programme with proceeds going directly towards matching the young people in Nelson-Tasman on their waiting list, as well as recruiting, training, supervising and supporting over 200 active matches from Hira to Golden Bay. He says the funds would help the team attend to around 55 kids on their waitlist for a mentor. Cushla estimates that around 50 of that number are boys. “A lack of male mentors has always been an issue for us and there’s a constant stream of referrals coming forward,” she says. Both Cushla and Richard have been blown away by the support they’ve received already. “I’m genuinely so surprised by people’s generosity each day.” Cushla says. The online auction closes soon on 15 Friday October at 9pm. https://app.galabid.com/bbbs21/

‘Richmond lads’ organise old fete Robyn Parkes In November of 1845, the “lads of Richmond” placed an article in the newspaper informing the public of a fete that would be held. The article went as follows: “To the Editor of the Nelson Examiner. Sir — I am requested by the committee of the Richmond fete to request that you will insert in your paper that we, the Richmond lads, do intend to celebrate the recall of Captain FitzRoy on Thursday, the 20th November, in the old English style : — Ist, A running match for men ; 2dly, a wrestling match; 3dly, jumping in sacks ; 4thly, grinning through horses’ collars; 6thly, a gingling match ; 6thly, a shooting match; 7thly, a race between two pack bullocks, one, the celebrated Jumper, belonging to H. Brown, the other belonging to a neighbouring farmer, both rode by the owners. After which a good, substantial dinner will be provided by the worthy host, Thomas Kite, of the Plough Inn, of Richmond Village, at six o’clock precisely. After which a ball will take place

Richmond’s The Plough Inn in 1948. Photo Supplied. and we shall not leave off till grey morn appears. W. Snow, Richmond. Nov. 14. Chairman.” So, what was the purpose of the fete being held? Captain Fitzroy, who was appointed Governor of New Zealand in 1843 was not at all popular with many in the community. After the Wairau Affray, Fitzroy declined to ‘punish’ Ngati Toa as he was unsure if the New Zealand Company had obtained the land legitimately. He also made a point of investigating the company’s other land purchases to ascertain if they were legitimate before confirming they were valid. This, and several other matters, made him very unpopular with settlers who in turn did all they could to

have him recalled to England. Scanning through the article some questions arise as to what is a gingling match and what is grinning through a horse’s collar all about? After a bit of research, here are the answers. A gingling, (or jingling) match starts with a circle that is enclosed by a rope (or marked off) and is occupied by eight to 10 people, all blindfolded except for one person. This player is called a ‘jingler’ because they carry a bell which is rung constantly. The blindfolded players must locate the jingler during an allotted time. The first person to catch them is the next jingler. The game of grinning through horse collars was an old game of rural English tradition, whereby participants vied with one another by putting their heads through a horse collar and grimacing or pulling faces to see who could make the ugliest face. They were then considered the winner. All in all it sounds like a fun fete and we can only wonder if the ball did indeed go on until the grey morn appeared.

Local volunteers will take to the streets on Friday 29 October and Saturday 30 October for the nationwide Breast Cancer Foundation Annual Appeal. Richmond and Stoke Area Coordinator, Rachael Watson, says they are fortunate to have a loyal

bunch of people who come back year after year to volunteer. “We get help from Richmond Li-

ons and the local Soroptimists group, which is great,” says Rachael. However, there are still a few spots available for people who would like to join the roster. If you are interested in helping out, do give Rachael a call. “We are reassuring people that the Breast Cancer Foundation are putting guidelines in place for collecting, that includes scanning of QR codes, use of hand sanitiser and the wearing of masks.” It’s a very worthy cause – everyone knows someone who has been affected by the breast cancer. In fact, Rachael’s own sister passed away from the disease 11 years ago, so for her, it’s very personal. “My 12 year old daughter, Bella, helps me out each year too as well as my Mum and sisters picking up shifts.” Businesses are encouraged to get involved – they may want to contribute to the appeal, wear pink or having a morning tea.

Volunteers such as Jen Adams, Ruth Malcolm and Jane Mitchell, will soon be out on the streets collecting for the Breast Cancer Foundation Annual Appeal. Funds are used for research, education and support of those fighting breast cancer. “Funds are used in for research, awareness, education and support of those fighting Breast Cancer.”

For more information, phone Rachael on 021 209 3325 or register at www. pinkribbonvoulunteer.org.nz.

Late rain leaves Waimea Toi Toi short

Jonty Dine Despite the late arrival of heavy rain, only one match was called off as the Nelson 40-over cricket competition got underway on Saturday. Defending champions Athletic College Old Boys kicked off its season in style, managing to get in a result before the rain arrived at the Maitai Cricket Ground. In his debut for the club and his first year out of college, Jonty Raxworthy made an immediate impression with a half century at the top of the order against Wakatu. Reuben Smith capped off the innings with a blistering 35 off just 15 balls, smashing four sixes as he propelled the hosts to 215/8. Dhamesha Rathnayake's 3 for 52 helped reduce the damage for Wakatu who made a strong start to its chase. Opener Brad Smith scored 48 to

Regular wickets would reduce Wakatu to 167/9 after 40 overs, falling 48 runs shy of victory as Ollie Jones-Allen, Martin Slabbert and Kevin Dsouza all bagged two wickets. before backing up with a 50 with the bat. Jordan's heroics weren't enough however as Nelson fell 56 runs short, Joseph O'Connor claiming 3/23. The late downpour cut short the final game at Jubilee Park which was deep into the second innings.

Stoke Nayland was looking set for victory against Waimea Toi Toi United before the game was abandoned. At 133/7, Waimea had some work to do chasing Stoke's total of 196 with just six overs remaining. Earlier in the sunshine, the visitors made a strong start with opener Ben Stark scoring 42 while Sean Neal provided some late fireworks with a 24-ball 43. Sam Baxendine was the pick of the bowlers for Waimea claiming 2 for 32 as Stoke fell just shy of 200 in its 40 overs with the loss of eight wickets. In reply, Waimea struggled to gets its innings going with regular wickets falling. Jared Silvester, Cameron Neame, and Neal each picked up two wickets apiece while Matt Deaker conceded just 13 runs from his six overs. Stoke/Nayland was awarded the win via Duckworth/Lewis Method.

SPORTS Harriers: The newly-landscaped Brightwater Village Green came alive on Saturday afternoon as 80 competitors and officials registered for the annual Waimea Harriers Brightwater Sprig & Fern 10km Fun Run and Walk, rescheduled from Covid-19 lockdown. The Brightwater course, with 3kms on the Great Taste Trail heading up towards Wakefield, a circuit around the scenic Mt Heslington and the remaining 4kms down-hill to the finish on River Road, is a favourite of many. Chris Sharland, Curtis Moore and John Rudge were the first three runners home while Catherine Delaporte, Renee Hunt and Colette Read were the first women to cross the finish. Saturday October 16 is the last race in the 2021 series, taking place at Mapua. Cycling: Wheel Woman, the Nelson Tasman-based mountain bike coaching organisation for women, has just reached a major milestone, seeing its 1000th woman take to the pedal. Coached by Founder Emma Bawtree, Greymouth’s Hope Dietrich claimed the stand as the 1000th woman to participate in a Wheel Woman course after a recent coaching session at Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park. The milestone symbolises not only the success of a great business concept but also the progress of women in mountain biking in general. As a mountain biker racing the national circuit in the early 1990s, Emma was one of just a handful of women taking to the tracks, but that has since changed. For Wheel Woman the

achievement comes after nine years in business, 3000+ hours in the saddle, the training and engagement of six coaches, and growth across the top of the South Island, with courses available in Marlborough, Blenheim and Hanmer, as well as in the Nelson Tasman region. Sports Awards: The 2021 ASB Nelson Sports Awards will be held online as a virtual event on Friday 3rd December. One of Sport Tasman’s signature events of the year, the ultimate accolade of the evening is the ASB Sportsperson of the Year who is determined to be the overall winner from the winners of the eight categories. To nominate someone, go to https://www.sporty. co.nz/viewform/167367 Cricket: Former Waimea College wicket keeper-batter Kate Gaging is the new name on the list of contracted Central Hinds for 2021/22. The 20-year-old made her Hinds debuts in both the national T20 and one-day competitions earlier this year and has now joined the list of nine other domestic contract players for the first time. The Central Hinds begin their 2021/22 campaign in just over a fortnight’s time, at Saxton Oval. It will be the first time that the Hinds will play in Nelson. Tennis: Nelson’s Lucas Cup team lost 10-6 to Marlborough over the weekend. The team of Alex Low, Harry Pugh, Oscar Symonds, Johnnie Cameron, Ruth Seeman, Mandy Beynon, Suzanne Spencer, Susan Rooney and Lucy Mitchell travelled over the Blenheim to try and wrestle the cup back but fell just short.

Chinese Church started in Richmond Jenny Nicholson

Richmond Church of Christ has started Chinese Church services. Their first guest speaker, Jack Stuart, grew up in Spring Grove before heading to Hong Kong as a missionary as a teenager. When Jack returned to New Zealand he was met at the airport by Ross Heyward, who had been the original pastor of Annesbrook Church of Christ in Nelson. Jack and Ross formed a Chinese Church in Christchurch and after 30 years the church has several hundred members. “This whole journey has been lots of unique stories in itself,” says Richmond Church of Christ pastor Steve Rollo. Steve has spent time as a missionary in Asia, taking teams into China, and

starting a Chinese Church in Richmond was very much on his heart. When the church began discussing running the church, they didn’t know anyone in the community who spoke mandarin but at their first service they had 38 attend. “There was a lady at the first service who said she had been praying about a Chinese speaking church for two years,” Steve says. “She was so excited to hear this was starting.” Currently services are being held once a month at Richmond Church of Christ but Steve hopes in time they will be weekly. The service starts with morning tea, a time to meet up with those who have earlier been to the English-speaking service. A meal, put on by the church, follows the service. “We had a Chinese first course and

Photo Supplied. kiwi desert for the first lunch,” says Steve. “We are hoping to have a blended meal.” Steve says they don’t want to be just a single culture church. Currently, a Samoan Church meets in the Richmond Church of Christ hall at the same time as the English and Mandarin speaking services are held in the main auditorium. While they meet separately, they have had a few combined services. Along with monthly services, a weekly zoom meeting bible study is being run in conjunction with the Chinese Church in Christchurch. Mandarin speaking classes for the community are due to commence in the New Year and Steve says he will be attending. The next service at Richmond Church of Christ on corner of Croucher and Darcy Street will be held on Sunday 28 November starting with morning tea at 11.15. The service starts at 11.45 with a lunch provided by the church to follow. The service in December is on Sunday 19th.
