Charles Anderson Kay Guyton-Miller has been helping local families and children in poverty for almost two decades – but now she is picking up the pieces of her own life after her home burned last month. Kay has long been a community
advocate for people struggling to stay afloat. She helps them get access to everything from the bare essentials to serious help. She is also Stoke School’s “social connector” who helps foster links between the school and the wider community. She is known as the “Angel in my Street,” funded by
the Nelson Tasman Charitable Trust. “I’ve always helped people,” she says. “So it’s really hard to accept help.” It was two and a half weeks ago that she was awoken to a loud bang in the middle of the night. She looked around and saw the
flames pouring over the walls of her Gladstone St home. “I raced out and went to wake up my husband and then to my son’s bedroom.” She managed to get them up and out of the house. Kay thought dog, Dre, was right beside her, but he didn’t make it.
“He was such a wonderful dog. He was a best friend to all of us in different ways. That is really sad. But I feel so grateful, it could have been so much worse.” Looking around the property now Kay wonders how they made

Parking Strategy submissions closing Submissions on the draft Parking Strategy for Richmond and Motueka close on Friday, February 23. The strategy is aimed at providing a prudent and holistic approach to balancing short, medium and long-term parking demands. The short-term plan includes measures such as introducing seasonal time restrictions, changing the layout of existing public carparks for maximum efficiency, improving enforcement, prioritising parking for people who car pool, improving walking and cycling networks and investing in public transport. Submissions can be made at www. tasman.govt.nz/policy/publicconsultation.
Swimming Ban Sunday’s heavy rainfall weather event resulted in an overflow of untreated sewage and stormwater contaminants into Waimea Estuary and Nelson Haven. The public is advised not to swim or have water contact at Waimea Estuary and the Haven, including Tahunanui Beach, until further notice. Council also recommends not swimming in the rivers for 48 hours following rainfall, due to overland run-off. Further, residents are reminded that shellfish should not be taken from within the enclosed waters of the Waimea Inlet and the Nelson Haven at any time as they may exceed maximum microbiological guideline levels.
New date for Asian Food Market Tasman’s Asian Night Food Fair had to be postponed last weekend due to the bad weather, but organisers are looking forward to running the event this Saturday. Nelson Multicultural Council coordinator Jenni Bancroft says that she’s delighted that all the stallholders are still able to attend the Fair. The evening of multicultural food and entertainment is at the Washbourn Gardens, Saturday, February 17, from 4pm. Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus open night Love to sing but not sure where to start? Formed 25 years ago, Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus is a women’s four-part acappella/ barbershop singing group, for all ages and all stages. So if you’d like to share your love of singing with a like-minded group of women, come along to their open night, Thursday, February 15, from 7pm at Club Waimea.

Angel in need FROM PAGE 1 it out alive. The entire house is charred, her van that she used to ferry supplies to needy families is burned out. Her garage is gutted. The only things that remain are a few drawers with some clothes and some family photos. “We were left with nothing.” Kay is in dispute with her insurance company about helping salvage something from the accident. Investigators are still working on the cause of the blaze. It means she and her husband are living separately, with friends, until they can get back on their feet. “It’s the shock of it all. You work hard all your life - I bought that house on my own, raising kids on my own. And it’s all gone just like that.”
They are hoping to demolish the home that Kay bought 24 years ago – the one with all her children’s heights marked on the wall. Then they want to build a small garage at the back of the property, so they can at least live back together. “We will live there until we figure out the next step.” But she needs help. Her goddaughter set up a Givealittle page for Kay and her family to help her through the difficult times. In the meantime, they need a two to three-bedroom place in Richmond to live. Before then, though, there is work to do. Kay went back to her job yesterday – still helping her community despite the problems that she is facing. “You have to. You just have to keep on going.”
The Waimea Dam proposal appears to have more lives than a cat, having survived yet another close vote at Tasman District Council earlier this month. Following public consultation on the proposed funding and governance model late last year, councillors voted eight to six at its Full Council meeting on February 2 to include the dam in the draft Long Term Plan 2018-2028. Despite the majority of the over 1500 submissions being against the dam, the staff report noted that it was not a “popularity vote”, and that the decision needed to be made on the weight of evidence. However, another major mile-
stone that is required before the dam can proceed is funding from council’s joint-venture partners, Waimea Irrigators Ltd (WIL). In March last year WIL reached its target of securing expressions of interest for 3000 shares at $5000 each from Waimea Plains irrigators, but now they need to secure an actual commitment. Last Thursday, the Product Disclosure Statement for the offer of water shares in WIL was officially launched, at a purchase price of $5500 per share, to raise their contribution towards the construction of the dam. Construction of the dam is estimated to be $75.9million, shared between WIL ($37.12m), a government loan
($10m), the Freshwater Improvement Fund grant ($7m), Nelson City Council ($5m) and Tasman District Council ($16.8m). In launching the prospectus, WIL project manager Natasha Berkett says, “we’re going to pay our fair share for a reliable source of water”. “All these years later, we are finally here with the best chance we have to secure a cost-effective solution that helps the broader community as well.” Under the share offering, shareholders can enter into agreements that allow them to apply under the Tasman Resource Management Plan to affiliate an existing ground water or surface water permit for water provided by the dam, once it’s built.

Seven years ago, Rob Ford was writing submissions to Tasman District Council along with his three young sons to try and get a new cycle track built at Saxton Field to replace the 100-year-old facility at Nelson’s Trafalgar Park. Tuesday, February 13, he was at the official opening of the Saxton Velodrome. While the Saxton Velodrome Trust was formed in 2011, the process of looking for a new home for the region’s cyclists started back in 2008 before the upgrade of Trafalgar Park began. “The Trust have put in a phenomenal amount of time and effort,” says Council’s Community Development manager Susan Edwards. However, Trust chairman Bruce Fraser says that today’s achievement is thanks, in no small part, to the drive, tenacity and determination of Rob. “Rob has been a dynamic force in ensuring it’s happened, right
from the beginning to today,” says Bruce. “From concept designs to technical aspects, we certainly wouldn’t have it without him.” But Rob says that it’s really been a community effort, acknowledging the role of his fellow trustees, funders, both councils and cycling advocates. He also says that other groups like the Taranaki Velodrome Trust have been incredibly generous, sharing their designs and spending time discussing construction methodology with him. “It’s been a long road and there’s been plenty of hurdles, but it’s great to see the finished product,” says Rob. “We’re really thankful for all of the input and support from the community.” Bruce and fellow trustee Kendall Jones says that in addition to funding from both councils, they’ve had great support from the Rata Foundation, Lion Foundation, New Zealand Community Trust and Mainland Trust, as well as in-kind
contributions from local businesses. Kendall emphasises that it’s not just a racing track, but a community asset that provides a much-needed facility for people of all ages to learn, get fit or simply have fun. The velodrome includes a 333m-long embanked track with a sevenmetre-wide sealed surface as well as an inner warm-up track and learn-to-ride arena. “The learn-to-ride is a real point of difference,” says Bruce. “It provides a safe exercise opportunity for older or less confident riders, as well as a learning facility for schools and families.” Access to the velodrome is via Champion Rd beside Garin College, with parking near the new toilet and change facilities block by Avery Fields. An underpass to the centre of the track means that the public can still access the learn-toride arena while cyclists are using the main track. A public opening is being organised for March.

Despite doing her best to “stay in the background” when it comes to recognition, Diane Drogemuller is most certainly at the forefront of Wanderers Sports Club, which is why she’s the winner of this month’s Stihl Shop Richmond Good Sorts award. “Club manager is the official title, and that includes secretary, a bit of treasury, the grounds and so on,” says Diane. “I like to see the community involved in the sports club and you do your best to make things work – it’s nice to have a pat on the back, I suppose.” Diane has also been involved in projects within the general Brightwater community, including the upcoming streetscape project, and says “there’s always something popping up” to get involved with. Nominator, past president of Wanderers Sports Club Denise Palmer, says Diane has been a “powerhouse for the club for decades.” “Diane has been involved in cricket, rugby, netball and squash at both senior and junior level, she also does a huge amount of work on the domain – from picking up rubbish to organising community events,” says Denise. “Her role has changed significantly over the years as the club has embraced more sports and, with the inclusion of other activities as well, Diane is probably one of the busiest people in Brightwater.” Stihl Shop Richmond owner Grant Blanchet is also familiar with Diane’s commitment to the club. “Diane does a lot of tireless work for the Wanderers community and she puts in a lot of hours, over and above what she’s required to do, she goes the extra mile.” People can nominate anyone from the Waimea Weekly’s distribution area for the monthly Stihl Shop Richmond Good Sort award by emailing editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz. The email needs to explain why the nominee deserves to win and include contact details.

Hockey Nelson welcomes new RDM Jessie Johnston With a passion for hockey and having recently achieved a Bachelor in sport and recreation, Tamara Dudley is feeling confident about her new position as regional development manager for Hockey Nelson. Tamara joined the team in late January, taking over the role from Craig Brett who had served the organisation for 14 years. Starting the job just weeks before Hockey Nelson’s senior and junior programmes kickoff has been “chaotic”, but Tamara is thrilled to be working in a sport she loves and in a region that offers such a great lifestyle. “I was in the Navy for 14 years and then I decided to go to AUT where I’ve recently finished a Bachelor in sport and recreation, majoring in coaching and management,” says Tamara. “Hockey is definitely something I wanted to be involved in, I’ve been playing for the last 30 odd years.” Tamara was born in Blenheim but has spent most of her life in the Auckland area. She’s played representative hockey for North Harbour, been in the
New Zealand Maori Women’s team for the last four years and has just been named in the New Zealand Women’s 35+ squad which will be competing at the Masters World Cup later in the year. Tamara also has extensive coaching experience and is looking to play club hockey this season. As regional development manager, Tamara oversees three key areas, community hockey, hockey in schools and representative teams. “Further on this year, I can probably implement some
changes, but I think this term, especially, it’s more observation and seeing how Hockey Nelson runs,” says Tamara. Operations manager Fabian Amor says Tamara’s personality was a big driver behind her appointment, as well as her hockey background. “The way she can interact with schools, young kids and young coaches is very important. We are excited about how Tamara’s role will impact the community and give us the opportunity to grow the sport within the region.”

Following a call for a safety review by Nelson MP Nick Smith, key agencies have met to try and address the increasing number of serious injuries and fatalities on the Appleby Highway. Since 2015 there have been seven deaths, 12 serious injury crashes and 45 minor injury crashes on the stretch of road from Three Brothers Corner roundabout to Motueka. The regional road toll for Nelson and Marlborough dropped to just five in 2015, but has grown even faster to 10 in 2016 and 14 in 2017. “The Appleby Highway has had four serious accidents in the last month involving fatalities and serious injuries,” says Nick. “The problem is not just State Highway 60 but too many accidents and near misses on Lower Queen St and feeder roads like McShane Rd and Lansdowne Rd.”
Following discussions with Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne, a meeting was held last Thursday with representatives from Tasman District Council, the New Zealand Police and the New Zealand Transport Agency. “All agencies understand the issues of safety on the roads in our district and are particularly concerned about the rise in fatal and serious crashes that have happened this summer on State Highway 60,” says Richard. “The human and social cost is simply too high.” Nick says that the fundamental problem is growing traffic numbers from increased population, exports and tourists, and that the number of lanes, intersection designs and speed limits need to be reviewed along with other measures to get on top of what is a serious road safety problem. “We particularly need to look at the provision of safe turning and merging lanes, given the
frequency of accidents around intersections,” says Nick. Senior sergeant Grant Andrews, team leader of road policing, says that the meeting helped to provide both a common understanding and a shared commitment towards actively working on solutions. “This has become a busy stretch of highway, as have the majority of highways within the Tasman district,” says Grant. Possible solutions include reviewing the speed limit on State Highway 60, and an increase in enforcement on those under the influence of substances, cellphone use while driving, and the number of people who do not bother to wear seat belts. However, Grant noted that while there are a small number of motorists who take risks, he says that we need to recognise the majority who do drive safely and are courteous to other road users. “It is their actions which prevent more crashes and inju-
ries on all our roads, not just this section of highway,” he says. While the $30million Ruby Bay bypass opened in 2010 and Maisey Rd intersection upgrade have improved the safety record on these sections, Nick says that the review needs to be looking at what further upgrades will help make this increasingly busy road safe. “We need both short-term and longterm solutions - warning signs, slower speed limits and more road policing need urgent consideration now,” Nick says.“The longer-term solution needs to be focused on roading infrastructure. We also need to raise awareness of this dangerous stretch of road, so
people will take additional care.” With Tasman District Council’s regional land transport plan currently out for public consultation, Richard says that it provides a timely opportunity for the public to give their input on the problems and, more importantly, possible solutions. “I encourage anyone wanting to share their views, who wants safer roads, to make a submission to the Council’s Regional Land Transport Plan,” Richard says. “Your message needs to be loud and clear to support us making our roads safer for everyone.” Submissions can be made online at tasman.govt.nz/feedback before 23 February.

Key things to remember • Sundial Square to the Warring Carpark entrance is closed to vehicles.
• Other parts of the street up to the Salisbury Road intersection will be subject to intermittent closures/ one-laning. • Footpaths remain open throughout the day and businesses are open as usual. • Carparking is available on much of Queen Street and in the off-street carparks accessible from Cambridge Street, Oxford Street and McIndoe Place.

Soroptimist fashion show needs designers Jessie Johnston The Soroptimist Club of Waimea is organising the inaugural Artful Creations event and they’re looking for creative people in the community to get involved. The creative design competition features four sections, challenging people to create an outfit
that will then be modelled by dancers from Fargher Academy. Entries are now open for the competition and will close on March 31, with all garments to be submitted for judging in August. Judges will then select the best designs to feature in the culminating fashion show on Friday, August 24, at Hope Community Church.

It’s not often you see a child crying because they don’t want to leave preschool and go home with their mum, but at Kiwi Explorers their fun, physical environment has children begging to stay. Co-owner and manager Rebecca Dudley says that a key point of difference is their Perceptual Motor Programme (PMP), which she says is not just about the activities they provide, but rather a philosophy that all their teachers subscribe to. “While PMP started in schools, as a team we felt that it should be part of our everyday curriculum, too,” she says. “PMP is different because it aims to develop the child rather than the skill.” She says that the focus of the movement-based programme is the importance of both verbal and physical development, where language is the key factor in providing the knowledge about the physical experience. In addition to a range of obstacle course-style outdoor play equipment, they also take the children on a range of outings such as to the local tennis courts, cricket pitch and the beach.

“Having a focus on outdoor activities fits well with the kiwi lifestyle, especially in our region,” says coowner Bevan Dudley. “It’s great to see the children gaining so much confidence through active movement before they go to school.” While there is a clear emphasis on development through movement, the centre also provides art, music, puzzles, building tables, blocks, cooking and stories, that Rebecca says all help a child’s understanding of the world. “A lot of learning comes through play and exploration,” Rebecca says. “We provide a stimulating and safe environment for the children that promotes challenges – and they’re so proud of themselves when they achieve them.” Rebecca and Bevan run Kiwi Explorers and Little Explorers preschools and say that the learning fundamentals are the same regardless of age, but that the key is meeting the needs of the individual child because they all learn at their own pace. To find out more about Kiwi Explorers go to www.kiwiexplorers. co.nz.

Tasman Talks Titles It’s often said that there’s nothing better than curling up with a good book; but finding a good book to read isn’t always that easy. Skimming through the shelves in your local library or book shop, browsing the sections you’re interested in, glancing at the new releases, and flicking through the books that catch your eye are all tried-and-true options. Or you could join a book club. Traditional book clubs prescribe a book for all members to read and then discuss, however, Tasman Talks Titles is a book club with a difference - you read and talk about the books that interest you, and hear about what other people have been reading. “You meet people with similar interests and you have a very wide range of different books you talk about,” says member Tony Jonkers. “Some of the books you hear about you’d never have dreamed of reading before hearing other people’s views.” Tony recently read the graphic novel series ‘Maus’ by Art Spiegelman, based on the recommendation of another book club member, and says that it was “absolutely superb”. The story of Polish Jews during the Holocaust, ‘Maus’ depicts the Jews as mice, Germans as cats and Poles as pigs, and was the first graphic novel to win a Pulitzer Prize. Librarian and book club coordinator Pania Konecna says that it’s a relaxed, social bookfocused time. “Anyone can turn up and talk about any book or books they’ve been reading,” she says. “You also get to see a selection of new titles that the library has purchased to help inspire you.” Tasman Talks Titles meets on the third Wednesday of the month, 3pm at the Richmond Library. Simply come along on the day or talk to one of the friendly library staff members.

Sam dives into new teaching role Judene Edgar Starting a new school can be quite nerve-wracking, but for new Henley School teacher Samantha Hickman, a classroom of seven and eight-year old children is nothing in comparison to the schools of barracudas she’s used to spending her days with. Originally from Walsall in the gloomy heart of the industrial West Midlands of England, and about as far from any open bodies of water as possible, Sam took up diving when she was 17 years old. “My dad set me up on a try dive with his friend who was a diver,” she says. “It really inspired me and sparked a passion for adventure and travel,” she says. A self-confessed adventure-junkie, Sam’s love of travel has seen her div-
ing, white water rafting and canoeing in Italy, Zimbabwe, Malaysia, Scotland, America, Fiji, Australia and most places in between. While she got up-close-and-personal with the whitetip and grey reef sharks diving in Sipadan, a volcanic island in Malaysia, she says they didn’t compare to the tiger sharks in Fiji. Cathedral in Fiji is one of only a couple of places in the world where you can dive eye-to-eye with the tiger shark – the biggest predator of tropical seas. “We got so close - they were immense,” says Sam. But her most exciting dive was in Scapa Flow, surrounding the Orkney Islands off Scotland’s north coast, exploring the wrecks on the seafloor that span centuries of failed and victorious sea explorations and battles. Following the German defeat in

Vanguard, both now designated war graves, and more than 150 other wrecks ranging from 18th century sailing ships through to more recent fishing vessels. “We explored 13 different battleships from World War One,
going as far down as 47 metres, which is quite considerable,” she says. However, a trip to New Zealand in 2016 to visit a friend saw Sam fall in love. “I love the outdoors – you can dive, go up a mountain – everything is on your doorstep,” she says. Working as a relieving teacher for the past year, Sam is excited to get her first fixed-term teaching post in New Zealand at Henley School and to become a part of the local community. “I’ve been itching to get my own class and Henley is a great school,” she says. “The diversity of opportunities they offer is amazing, and I love how John [Armstrong, the principal] brings the outside community in.” Sam is looking forward to getting to know her students and sharing some of her adventures and stories with them. “Sharing my passions helps me to bond with them and find out what their passions are,” she says. “Writing from their own experiences is the easiest way to get their creative juices flowing.” But Sam says she won’t just be relying on her old stories. She’s looking forward to having new adventures and creating new stories here in Nelson.

Richmond Community Church Valentine’s Day is a day that for most people is about romantic love expressed with red roses, hearts, chocolates, cards and gifts, which is all good, especially for florists, gift shops, jewellers and restaurants. You might be interested to know that every year in the USA over $18 billion is spent celebrating Valentine’s Day, with pet owners spending well over $50 million spoiling their cat or dog with special Valentine treats! I am sure Valentine himself would be very surprised to hear that 1750 years later his memory lives on, and especially that billions of dollars are spent celebrating the day named after him. It is interesting also that very few people today have any idea who he was, so read on if you would you like to know who Valentine was. It is believed that Valentine was a Priest in the third century when the cruel Roman Emperor Claudius II issued an edict that prohibited the marriage of young people, based on the hypothesis that unmarried soldiers fought better than those who are married. Valentine took a strong stand against the edict and continued to perform weddings for young couples because, for Christians, marriage is a very sacred commitment between one man and one woman for life and is encouraged. Because of his stand, and for his Christian beliefs, he was subsequently arrested, imprisoned and tortured, and on February 14, 269 AD, he was executed. While in prison he was said to have prayed for a young blind girl who was the daughter of Asterius, the judge or jailer, who himself became a Christian as a result. The story goes that the last words Valentine wrote were in a note to Asterius’ daughter, signing it “From your Valentine.” It wasn’t until the 1700s in England that Valentine’s Day became the day in which lovers expressed their love towards each other with gifts. Since then February 14 has been primarily relegated to the celebration of romantic love, which contrasted with the even greater unconditional agape or sacrificial love of Christ that Valentine communicated and, like Jesus, he too paid the ultimate price for. For the greatest love of all is a love that sacrifices all. And this great love is demonstrated when a person sacrifices his life for his friends - John 15: 13.

A big show for a little theatre needs some helping hands – building hands, that is. The Nelson Youth Theatre Company is bringing The Phantom of the Opera to Nelson for the first time ever this April – and while they’ve got the acting and singing sorted, they need a help with some other “staging challenges”. “We are calling on any current or retired builders to give us a hand on a couple of projects we need to complete for the production,” says the show’s director Richard Carruthers. This includes building two ‘portable’ royal boxes into the theatre auditorium on either side of the stage, devise means for candles to float out of a mist in the phantom’s lair, a boat to flow seamlessly across the stage, and numerous other magical devices that are outside their “normal range of staging expertise”. Richard says that other sets that have been used around the country are too big to fit into the Theatre Royal. “It’s the first time the show has ever been performed here, and all those magical moments that everyone’s seen in the big Broadway or West End versions of the show have to somehow be transposed into our little theatre. “We’d love to hear from anyone who can volunteer their time for couple of weekends – maybe two or three Saturdays. They’ll have the thrill of being able to say ‘we built that’ - and free tickets to the show, of course.” The classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House. “The music is not an easy sing and it’s a huge step up for some of our talented young performers,” says Richard. “But they are being carefully coached and I’m confident people will not be disappointed in our cast’s abilities to sing those sublime top notes. “Now we just need a set to match that.” The Phantom of the Opera is on at the Theatre Royal from 8-21 April with tickets from the theatre or TicketDirect. To volunteer your building services, email Richard at nelsonytc@gmail.com

NELSON WINE + FOOD FESTIVAL 2018 Patrons of the Nelson Wine and Food Festival loved the country setting of Middle Earth Vineyards so much, last year they baulked at the suggestion that maybe it should be shifted somewhere else! So the Richmond Rotary Club took note and decided to keep the event where it is. “It’s a lovely rural setting,” says organiser Peter Glue, “with a natural amphitheatre –everyone sits amongst its gorgeous grounds, and has a wonderful time.”
What’s more, people can stay the night if they want to, for a mere ten dollars, “which is pretty damn cheap!” says Peter. “Besides it means people don’t need to worry about their drive home after consuming the odd wine or beer. As long as you have a self-contained motor home or caravan, come along and stay the night.” The event began as a fair but “we decided it could be made a lot better by turning it into a festival by adding

Swap meet organisers Gary Plum, left, Max Clarke and Jim Wareing with some of the goods on offer at the annual swap meet this Saturday. Photo: Judene Edgar.
Something old, something old Judene Edgar From hobbyists to obsessives, swap meets are often the best way for car restoration enthusiasts to find cars, parts and auto-related items for their “labour of love”, all in the one location. And that’s exactly what the Nelson Vintage Car Club are offering this Saturday at their fourth Swap Meet. As well as being a bargain hunter’s dream, it’s also a great excuse to do a bit of a clean out and bring along those car parts hidden at the back of your ga-
rage that might be just what someone else is looking for to finish their restoration project. While car parts and accessories are a key theme of the day, organising committee chairman Jim Wareing says that it’s not just about cars. “There will be stalls and boots filled with garden tools, household items, bikes, toys, memorabilia, vintage signs, collectables and bric-a-brac,” says Jim. This year they’ve included more food and drink options as well as a ‘Cars for Sale’ area. There will also be gate passes
available, so people can come and go as they please throughout the day. “There’s stuff for the mile so people cart gear home or check them out and then come back later and get more,” he says. Sales sites are available for $15 or vehicle sales can be included for only $10. For site bookings contact Merilyn Clarke on 548 3899 or email swapmeetnelson@gmail.com. The Swap Meet is at the Speedway grounds off Lansdowne Rd, Richmond on Saturday, February 17, from 8am.

Despite the huge range of activities that are possible at Happy Valley Adventures, their broader programme includes support for some major events such as the Wairua Warrior, which is happening on April 7. Happy Valley Adventures is proud to be the venue for this incredibly popular obstacle racing event. In the long term, Richard and Helene would like to do a full rebrand of the business and take everything to a higher level. “A lot of that has to do with riparian plantings, signage and presentation. We want it to be a destination that is very close to Nelson and when people are looking for things to do, they won’t have to look very far – they can pop over to Cable Bay knowing there will be somewhere with a huge range of things they can enjoy.” Although the existing café is working well, Richard and Helene hope to de-

the main road between Nelson and Picton, makes it a fantastic spot to break up your journey if you are travelling in either direction. From Havelock, Marlborough Travel offers a half day Greenshell Mussel Cruise, a wine and food experience in the stunning Malborough Sounds. Havelock is famous for Greenshell mussels, and this tour will give you a fascinating insight into how these delicacies are farmed – as well as an opportunity to witness the beautiful setting of Kenepuru and Pelorus Sounds. This is a half-day activity starting at 1:30pm each day in the summer. The Queen Charlotte Drive is a backroad between Havelock and Picton. This
provides road access into the Marlborough Sounds, where you have further kayaking, walking, accommodation and nature experiences on offer. Cable Bay is situated within 5km of Happy Valley Adventures and the range of activities there is also fantastic; kayak around Pepin Island, with spectacular scenery and crystal blue water and a chance to see dolphins, seals, penguins, and maybe even the occasional orca. You should allow half a day for this tour. There is also a local rifle range in Cable Bay that will give full tuition, if needed, in a safe and fun environment. Allow an hour to enjoy the range. If you are keen to check out
the opportunities in the Abel Tasman National Park, there are a variety of operators offering everything from sea kayaking tours and water taxi services, to information and support services for walking the coastal or inland track, or parachute jumping and acrobatic plane flights. All of these activities are easily and frequently combined with the Happy Valley Adventures experience. So, the possibilites are endless at Happy Valley Adventures. The SkyWire, Argo rides, horse trekking, paintballing, 4-wheel driving, you name it, it’s happening. For more information, go to www. happy valleyadven tures.co.nz.

programme will continue. The Murchison A and P Show is held on the one day, Saturday, February 17, however the wood chopping championships and equestrian events run through until Sunday (February 17 and 18). While the future of the Murchison A and P show may have hung in the balance several months ago, with a newly revived committee and strong support from local businesses and individuals, the event is looking to be another fantastic day out for all ages. “The show has been around for 98 years and it’s the one event in Murchison that involves the whole community,” says Sue. “And we’d like to keep it going for another 98 years!” For more information phone the secretary Irene James or email murchison.ap.show@gmail.com. Event information can also be found on the Murchison A & P Facebook page.

There’ll be lots of smiles on children’s faces at this years’ Murchison A & P show as they enjoy all the fun activities on offer. “This is a lead up to the 100th show, where we will have a section for the last two shows (2018 and 2019) and photos from these years will be judged at the centennial show. So, basically people need to take photos this year so they can enter next year!”
At 2pm the results from the dairy and pasture classes will be announced at the function room, then “at 3.30 participants can remove their entries from the sheds,” says Sue. Although the show itself will begin winding down at this stage, the woodchopping and equestrian

Maggie wins Coast to Coast section Judene Edgar
Friday 16 February, 10am - 3pm
Sixteen-year-old Waimea College student Maggie McLean secured her place as one of the nation’s rising multisport athletes by winning the secondary school section of the iconic two-day Coast to Coast event last weekend. One of the world’s longest running multi-sports events, the Coast to Coast has become almost a rite of passage for multi-sport athletes from around the world with over 18,000 people having completed the event since it was founded in 1983.
If you missed our open day in January and would like to view our townhouse showhome you’re welcome to come along on Friday 16 February. I will be here to show you around, and the tea and coffee will be ready if you’d like to sit down for a cuppa and have a chat about your retirement living options.
helloworld travel presentation
Held every February, the sixstage course starts at Kumara Beach south of Greymouth, and traverses the width of the South Island, crossing the main divide and finishing at New Brighton Pier in Christchurch. The 243km course wasn’t entirely new for Maggie who had raced the kayak stage in last year’s event as part of a three-person team from Waimea College alongside cyclist Daniel Reid and runner Maddie Mitchell. “I’ve been adventure racing since Year 9 and have done the Junior Get2Go Challenge
twice as a team and our team came second in the Hillary Challenge last year, but this was my first proper individual multi-sport event,” she says. “I didn’t start training until quite late and I hadn’t done any road biking before, but I had a goal based on last year’s times.” Setting her sights on a top ten finish based on last year’s times, while this year’s times were faster, she was happy that her time was faster than anticipated. Finishing with a time of 15 hours, 55 minutes and 29 seconds, Maggie came first in
the secondary school girls’ category and 17th overall in the women’s open two-day section. “I’m really happy with my time. Based on last year’s times I would have come eighth,” she says. Spurred on by her “really awesome support crew” and family, Maggie crossed the finish line with a smile.
And while many competitors might be tempted to take a day off to recover, not only did Maggie turn up at school on Monday, but she’s already preparing for a six-hour adventure race in Reefton this weekend. The overall winner of the Coast to Coast was Sam Clark with Robyn Owen winning the women’s section.

prize on offer and Webb was the car to catch after breaking the lap record at practice. He lead on points after qualifying night and won the six lap top eight dash to decide grid positions for the 30 lap final. He didn’t have the best start as he was passed on the opening lap by Auckland’s Ryan Barry. But Webb snuck underneath to grab the lead, and he edged away before cautiously threading his way through lap traffic. It meant the chasing pack closed in and it was 15a of Ryan Baker that latched onto the rear bumper of Webb for the last five laps. While still trying to move round the slower traffic, Webb held his nerve on the final lap to win the title by a
car length. It was an epic final race with no stoppages and all 24 cars finishing. Jeremy's title goes with the two that his father Dick won, in Nelson in 1996 and at Ruapuna in 1992. The Nelson club were represented with six cars in the final. Club champion Alicia MacLauchlan was the best, coming home in 9th, with Dylan Stone-Cuthbert, Darkie Armstrong, Jayden Corkill, Morgan Frost and Luke Dilworth all completing the 30 lap feature. There were 10 qualifying races on the first night with 9 different winners amongst the 45 drivers competing. Nine was also the number of rollovers during the night with local George Crosbie going over twice and Christchurch's Daniel Jenkins flying to the top of the safety fence. Local Shane Robertson won the first heat of the night, but lost his chain in the second. Other results: Youth Ministocks best pair’s winners were Caleb Jessop and Hadley Boyce, while Alex Hill is the closed club Super Stock champion after surviving some last race battles.

Waka ama paddlers from the top of the South jostled for titles in the 10th anniversary of Tuna e Hoe Ana, ‘paddling with the eels’ regatta at Lake Rotoiti this weekend. Conditions were ideal, and competition was fierce throughout the two-day regatta which drew a record field of 176 competitors in 22 categories. Competitors came from as far afield as the UK, with others from Lake Wakatipu, Christchurch, Waikawa, Motueka, Onetahua and Whakatu. The outrigger or ama keeps the waka upright if leaning left, but it can easily overturn if the weight of the paddlers goes too far to the right. Consequently, some of the biggest cheers came for those who overturned their waka, losing time, but
persisting, finishing in style. All competitors received a commemorative medal, and trophies were awarded to winners and to encourage the paddlers as well, with Motueka High School student Mamie Puha from Motueka Waka Ama club awarded winner of the Jack Young Memorial Mere for outstanding leadership in waka ama. Crews from Motueka Waka ama Aurei won the open men’s six-person waka team races, with Waikawa Manuao winning the open women’s races and Whakatu Waka ama, Wakapaddle taking out the mixed crew category. Taking out the women’s singles honours was Tara Hope, and Todd Jago took home the men’s singles. In the doubles, Char-
maine Payn and Anisha Huntley took out the women’s title and Kereama Payn and Mike Beech dominated the men’s category. Maitahi president Charmaine Payn says that the event was well supported by both competitors and sponsors. She acknowledged main sponsor Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō along with Nelmac, Shane Anderson from Kite Surf Shop, Vaughan Hope from CLM, Rob Smith of Kialoa, Summit, Rosalie Adamson, NMIT and SBS bank, as well as all the volunteers from the Maitahi Club. Boat safety support came from Tasman District Council’s Deputy Habourmaster Jimmy Mackay, Andre Christian, and Dave Gunter from Nelson Bays Dive Club.

SportS FOOTBALL Tasman United's hopes of a top four finish took a heavy blow in Auckland on Sunday as it lost 3-0 to Eastern Suburbs in the ISPS Handa Premiership. Tasman are still fifth on the table but are now six points behind fourth-placed Canterbury United, which also has a game in hand. Tasman are set to host tabletoppers Auckland City this Saturday at Saxton Field, kick off is at 2pm.
bowlers was Jones, picking up 3 for 46 off his ten overs. Jones then turned his attention to the batting crease, scoring 82 off just 57 balls. Andrew Drummond (52*) was the next best for Wanderers but the lack of a tail saw the chase peter out at 198 in the 41st over. Meanwhile, Nelson College romped home to a big win over Athletic College Old Boys on the back of a big 74 by College's Thomas Zohrab. Batting first, College had put on 162 when it was bowled out in the 47th over. In reply, ACOB could only muster 106 runs before it was bowled out in the 26th over.
CRICKET A man-of-the-match performance by Wanderers' Evan Jones wasn't enough to secure a win for his team as it failed to chase down Stoke/Nayland for the second week in a row. Batting first, Stoke/Nayland put on 244 in its allotted 50 overs. Pick of the Wanderers

RUNNING Several Nelson athletes ran away with Buller Marathon titles over the weekend. Phil Costley won the half marathon with a time of 1 hour,
13 minutes, 41 seconds. Paula Canning won the 45-54 year old women's section of the half marathon with a time of 1:25:23. Yvonne West won the 65-99 women's section of the half marathon, with a time of 1:52:28. Kathryn Cocker won the marathon walk in a time of 5 hours, 29 minutes and 13 seconds. SEA SWIM They say every cloud has a silver lining. It didn't seem that way when the fierce storm that hit Nelson severely damaged buildings along Wakefield Quay, including the yacht club. Due to that damage, last Thursday's Port Nelson sea swim was shifted to Tahunanui Beach - and what a silver lining that was. Swimmers revelled in the warm water and calm conditions with Luke Kelly, riding high on his national series win in Wellington, cruising to victory in the 1200m race around the fixed buoys in front of the beach.

Father and son, 57 and 15, self-employed, responsible and honest would like a place to shoot. Deer rabbits goats etc. Happy to work out a payment (from stocking the liquor cabinet on a regular basis) to paying a cash lease for a reasonable lease charge. Very careful, respectful of rules and regulations on property and willing to abide by Farmers instructions on animal types and numbers etc. Just want to enjoy the great outdoors closer to Richmond. Love to shoot around Murchison etc. Both members of two gun clubs and licenced hunters. Have our own modern 4wd and accommodation. Please email at babaji05@xtra.co.nz or 0275449448. Thanks.
