HAVING A BLAST: Have a Blast owner Jim Thomas has organised Have a Blast Day this Sunday. The day will feature 15 bouncy castles and it’s all free. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Set for blast off Jim Thomas wanted to give his son 15 bouncy castles for his birthday, but instead of letting just him use them, he has invited the whole community to join in. Jim and his wife Monica have organised Have a Blast Day, which will see 15 bouncy castles and plenty more free activities on offer this Sunday at Waimea Intermediate School from 10am. Jim and Monica are co-owners of Have a Blast, a bouncy castle business, but it was the lack of free events within the community, as well as his son’s birthday, which inspired Jim to create the

my freeview

event. “Basically it’s just to give people of the community something that is free, you know,” he says. The bouncy castles vary from standard castles, to ones with slides to obstacle courses. There are castles suitable for all ages. Originally planned for Tahunanui and then Saxton Field, the Nelson City Council would not allow the event to go ahead, until Waimea Intermediate School came to the party. Sport Tasman were keen to help out and will be running some activities on the day.

Residents say enough is enough FROM PAGE 1 over the village in 2006. One major problem with the fund, says the committee, is that it’s not protected, meaning the Wrights could walk away with all the money in the fund when they sell the village, leaving residents vulnerable to any future maintenance costs. Local politicians are promising to help the residents fight the increase with TDC councillors Judene Edgar and Kit Maling denouncing the increase. Kit says he has had numerous phone calls and letters from some of the elderly residents scared and upset by the proposed increase. “What Michael is doing is wrong, just wrong. In my opinion it is theft and needs to be stopped.” Nelson list MP Maryan Street is also working on a private members bill to get the residents more protection. Last week Michael and Carolyn told the residents they were taking the increase to arbitration after the proposed budget was leaked to Waimea Weekly. It appears the residents committee have had enough of Michael and Carolyn’s demands though and have refused to

participate in arbitration, meaning the dispute will instead have to be settled by agreement, an option in the residents lease. But their stance remains clear: “No increase and no arbitration”. This week the committee issued a newsletter to fellow residents, which says: “The committee is aware of the stress, anxiety and fear among many resident that the review has caused. “Your committee is appalled that Michael and Carolyn Wright would even make such a heartless proposal.” It then went on to say: “No! No! No! Enough is enough! Your committee is of the opinion that Waimea Village 2005 Ltd does not deserve one cent more than the $125 per month you are now paying. Our opinion is supported by three independent accountants who were absolutely dumbfounded at the proposed budget figures.” Kit says he is meeting with Nelson MP Nick Smith this week over the dispute and hopes to get his support. “A lot of the residents down there [the village] are vulnerable people and elderly people and we need to stand up for them when people like the Wrights try to rip them off and walk all over them.”

Nelson Pine Industries appoint deputy CEO Former Tasman Rugby Union chief executive Peter Barr has landed a newly created role with one of Richmond’s largest employers. Nelson Pine Industries Ltd managing director, Murray Sturgeon, announced the appointment of the local businessman as deputy chief executive officer of NPIL late last week. Peter will join the company on March 5 of this year bringing to this newly created position executive experience gained from his previous employment with BP Oil (NZ), and more recently as chief executive of the Tasman Rugby Union. The role of deputy chief executive officer has been created to provide a seamless continuity to the management structure of NPIL. “It is imperative that the company has a succession management plan in place,” says Murray. “Peter’s appointment will bring freshness to the company, and will enable us to capitalise on the wealth of experience he brings to the group.”

Principal eyes technology future

Having just celebrated 10 years as a school, Garin College principal John Boyce has one eye on a future with no paper or pens. Garin College is set to go wireless before the end of the term and John acknowledges it is only a matter of time before the school makes it compulsory to use laptops, netbooks or iPads and gets rid of writing on paper all together. “Once you’re wireless why don’t you have kids bringing their devices?” he says. John says a board committee discussed the proposal to implement it this year, but parents were still “50-50” on the idea. “Some of them thought do it now and others thought should we be exposing our kids to radio waves? There were all those issues so we decided not to make it compulsory this year.” Around 20 students already rely on using laptops because they have dyslexia. While on the face of it, it seems like an expensive option, John wanted to stress that the price of

Fresh

Beef Sausages

stationary over five years could easy exceed the price of one netbook laptop. “You go to a lecture at university and see who is writing notes. All of the people in tertiary are using a laptop or an iPad or something.” Once the wireless internet is up and running, John says it is only a matter of time before students will want to bring their laptops in. “I’d say by the end of the year we’d have 10 to 20 per cent of the kids bringing some sort of device to school.” He is also keen to look at building a chapel at the school. Although a $1 million price tag stands in the school’s way, John says it is important for a catholic school. During the 10 years, the school has had three student deaths. He says a chapel would be a place where students could reflect, remember and celebrate the lives of those that have been lost, instead of doing it in a classroom. It would also be a place students could pray.

Sprig & Fern expands to Wellington Jonathan McKeown One of Richmond’s iconic local brews will soon be available in the capital as the Sprig & Fern gets set to open a tavern in central Wellington. There could even be a couple of politicians walk the few hundred metres from parliament for a cold one, says Sprig & Fern coowner Dave Barrett. As the most awarded brewery at the 2011 BrewNZ International Beer Awards, Dave says the Sprig & Fern beers will be a perfect fit for a city that calls itself the craft

and they embrace the beer capital of New Zealand. “They call qualities that Nelson’s themselves the craft taverns are known for beer capital and I think a family friendly place Nelson-Tasman is the where patrons can go at the end of the day to craft brew capital of New Zealand so it was catch up and really talk a natural progression away from the distracto go to Wellington,” tions of pool tables and says Dave. pokies, great service “and obviously great Co-owner Tracey BanDave Barrett and Tracey Banner. ner says the ownerbeer.” operators of Wellington’s Sprig & Fern The tavern is due to open in Wellington by know what the culture of the taverns is like the end of the month and Tracey says fur-

ther expansion is not out of the question. “We get asked three or four times a month by people wanting to start new Sprig & Fern bars but it’s a matter of finding the right people in the right place.” Sprig & Fern now has five taverns in the top of the south with another few bars that pour their beers on tap. Dave says it’s exciting to see the brand grow. “It was always in the plan but it is great to see it happen and great to see the brand move out of Nelson. We would like to see a Sprig & Fern in every major city in New Zealand and eventually to take it overseas.”

TO THE EDITOR

The opportunity to reduce the size of the bureaucracy governing the Nelson and Tasman provinces is something that every rate payer should embrace by voting for the amalgamation of our two councils. I totally disagree with the mayor of Tasman in his attempts to defend the efficiency of the existing council structures. The ever growing size, red tape, head count and ballooning rate increases of council are unsustainable and indefensible. Amalgamation provides the opportunity to turn that tide on so many levels. Amalgamation will introduce unified planning and a unified decision making process that will be more administratively efficient and less costly on ratepayers. It is commercial nonsense that under the current system of separate councils each council submits on the others proposed Resource Management Plan changes. The costly executive time is essentially wasted in the preparation of these submissions, in just one example of the inefficiency at work we need to address. One council for the combined area will ensure the development of common standards for regulatory control. Not only will greater consistency and co-ordination put an end to the ‘endless talk fest’ between councils but single standards lead to less compliance and less cost. The current decision process is too time consuming and costly as it is dependent on the two separate governing bodies reaching agreement, difficult because of personality problems amongst councillors, private agenda’s and different policy objectives. Services to the community cannot be provided efficiently if executives from both councils spend time at what appears to be endless meetings. All too often rate payers seeking to make contact with council staff are simply told “they are at a meeting and cannot be contacted”. The current council’s structure is process driven not outcome driven. They appear to be more interested in a long winding journey than the destination itself. Administrative savings are a small part of what’s on offer from amalgamation. The huge cost savings to be made by development and operation of services through unified council should not be underestimated. A single council armed with a clear set of consistent guidelines will for better positioned to represent the people of the region than the current army of bureaucrats. Peter Talley, Tasman.

Airport runway set for makeover Nelson Airport is gearing up for a $3 million runway upgrade while juggling flights on the country’s fourth busiest airport. Work, by contractor Fulton Hogan, is starting this week and Nelson Airport Ltd chief executive, Kaye McNabb, says there has been a huge amount of work that has already gone into the project with planning requirements being excruciatingly detailed to make sure the project runs smoothly and the airport continues to be operational during the hours of scheduled operations. Work is expected to take 15 nights so that scheduled passenger services are not disrupted. With around 2000 passengers a day coming or going from the airport, ensuring flight schedules are

not affected is of paramount importance to the airport company and the airlines, says Kaye. The project will see a team of up to 40 working throughout the night to overlay sections of about 90 meters each night from Saturday to Thursday each week until completion. As Friday night has flights coming in until 10.30pm, that has been designated as the rest night for the duration of the project. The area to be resurfaced is 61000m2 and around 8500 tonne of asphalt will be required to complete the overlay which will see about 500 tonne being laid each night, which is no mean feat. The runway was last resurfaced with a 40mm overlay in 1995 at a cost of $875,600.

Public services in Nelson are bursting at the seams as new data shows the region is the fastest growing in the country. According to recent population data released last week by Statistics New Zealand, Tasman was shown to be the fastest growing region in New Zealand with a growth of 1.68 per cent. That same data showed Nelson in third place with a growth of 1.54 per cent. Auckland was in second place with 1.65 per cent growth. Much of that growth can be put down to an exodus of Cantabrian families moving away from the earthquake-ravaged city. The figures show 5000 people have left Christchurch, 1500 of them coming to Nelson and Tasman. But that growth is putting pressure on services, including health and education. President of the Nelson Principals Association, Don McLean, says schools are recording record numbers, some up by more than 100 students on last year. “There are definitely more kids around and we’ve got to house them and provide a learning environment for them.” Nelson Marlborough District Health Board secretary, Mike Cummins says they too have noted an increase on services, especially an increase in the number of people enrolling for GP services, aged residential care and an increase in pharmaceuticals being prescribed. That pressure has put the DHB over budget. As a result Nelson MP Nick Smith says he written to ministers to make sure they are aware of the pressure the population increase is having on the region.

Calling all food vendors Food vendors can now register to be part of the annual Sprig & Fern Summer Fare, but if previous years are anything to go by, sites could be snapped up very quickly. More than 3000 people visited the Summer Fare last year and organisers say it is the “last hooray” for Tasman residents before winter sets in and daylight saving finishes. Richmond Unlimited marketing and events coordinator Kim Quint is encouraging food vendors from all over Tasman and Nelson to be part of the biggest street party in the region. The event will be held at Sundial Square on Friday 23 March from 5:30pm to 10pm. You can register your interest at www.richmondunlimited.co.nz. Stall sites cost $80 and are 4m by 3m deep. Organisers will not allow food stalls that have not been registered or licensed with the Tasman District Council, or alternatively, the New Zealand Food Safety Authority. This year’s theme will be medieval and there will be music and entertainment for all ages. For further enquiries please contact Kim on 544 4898.

In total, the shop has sold 30 major prizes, just four short of Radius Pharmacy Peter Dunkerley in Hastings. Major wins are counted from Lotto First Division, Powerball, Strike and Big Wednesday. Richmond Night ‘n Day has sold 27 Lotto First Division prizes. Late last year it sold the mammoth $8.1 million Powerball prize meaning the store has given out $17,848,848 in winnings during the past 30 years, ranking it 11th on the all time list for the amount of cash won. Owners David and Amber Smolenski say the luck just keeps on coming because of the amount of Lotto tickets they keep selling each week. David says he clearly remembers his first big win in charge, although he was down in St Arnaud when the results came through. “It was pretty exciting all the same,” he says. All 30 major wins have gone to locals except for one which was claimed down in Christchurch. David and Amber are always sworn to secrecy but he does remember the faces when they come back into the store. “But one thing you have to remember is that $1 million isn’t going to change your whole lifestyle, it’s going to make it a hang of a lot easier for you, but it’s not like you can just stop everything and do want you want,” he says. “$8 million dollars will change your life though and to be honest I’ve hardly seen them since.”

College students bring down the house Hillary were the ultimate winners at the annual Waimea College house sports day, despite coming third in the morning’s colourful march in. The house sports day includes the student favourite march past, which sees all four houses dress up and perform chants in front of their school, as well as many activities like egg throwing, three legged races, tug of war, swimming relays and other various challenges. Cooper were awarded maximum points from the march past ahead of Sheppard, Hillary and Rutherford. But by the day’s end it was the yellow of Hillary

that came out supreme, followed by Sheppard, Cooper and Rutherford. Waimea College principal Larry Ching says the day is the perfect way to start the year. “I think overall it’s a wonderful way to get started and it really helps our younger and new students gel with the rest of the school,” he says. “While it’s competition, you don’t have to be a great sportsperson to do any of the events that are out there.” Through the years, the day has become less reliant on staff involvement, with the students taking ownership, says Larry. But some of the staff also take part.

Tyre-shredding burnouts, motocross riders jumping cars, monster trucks and vehicles being dropped out of the sky, was just some of the engine revving fun on show at the eighth annual Nelson Car Show. Cadillac Way in Annesbrook was aptly named as classics, hot-rods, turbos and muscle cars snaked in through the gates on Saturday and Sunday. With 280 cars on show and a record crowd of close to 5000 people attending, organiser Peter Van Humm of the Nelson Car Show, says it was the “best show yet”. “It’s a great family-type day with plenty of entertainment. We’re really happy with the weekend.” One of the crowd favourites at the show was the burnout competition. It was started in proper fashion by a car being dropped from a crane and motocross riders soaring through the air. The first burnout featured Steve Steele in

Stan Heywood of Appleby relaxes with a barbecue lunch at the conclusion of Saturday’s Ride for Hope. The Ride for Hope saw motorcyclists venture from Nelson to Hope via Motueka. $10,000 was raised for the Richmond Mall Foundation. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Ride for Hope raises 10k for foundation Close to $10,000 was raised for the Richmond Mall Foundation on the back of another successful Ride for Hope. The annual event, which sees motorcyclists from around the region head out to Hope via Motueka, attracted around 200 motorbikes and their riders despite some murky weather. Richmond Mall manager David Hill says the riders alone raised $2000, which was then matched by the mall’s owners. “It was outstanding. It really was,” he says. “Weather-wise and the amount of riders that turned up, we were exceptionally thrilled with it.” There were also plenty of donations from sponsors which raised the funds even higher. David says the funds are “the backbone” of the foundation which gives to individuals as well as local groups including the Rescue Helicopter Trust

and the Nelson Hospice. The Ride for Hope is one of a number of fundraisers run by the Richmond Mall. Richmond Mall Foundation is also the charity of choice for the Richmond Rodeo. David spoke to “just about everyone” that went on the ride and says the feedback was all hugely positive as participants enjoyed a barbecue cooked by the Waimea College first XV. “It was a relaxing ride; the whole day is about relaxing and camaraderie.” The motorcycles ranged from Harley Davidsons to Vespas and everything in between. There were plenty of awesome prizes on offer, estimated to tally $5000, including motorcycle registrations, All Blacks jerseys, radio controlled helicopters, belts, buckles, badges and even Welsh and Australia rugby jerseys.

New Zealand’s largest & most respected national supplier of Concrete Products.

Russell Bruce welcomes customers to the new premises at Kotua Place in Wakatu, where the Bruce Design and Build offices and Flashman workshops are located. A home is the biggest investment you’ll ever make, so it’s understandable to want the most for your money. Bruce Design and Build understand this, and are able to provide their clients with the quality you can expect of a building company for a lower price tag. Russell Bruce began the venture 18 months ago, as the logical next move in an already successful building career. He began as the apprentice and first builder for another reputable building company in Nelson a decade ago. His building skill and flair for the industry meant that soon he was being individually requested by clients to build their homes. Over the last 10 years Russell and his team have worked on over 150 houses within the Nelson region, with as many satisfied homeowners. In 2011 the team from Bruce Design and Build worked on four homes that went on to win their owners’ House of the Year awards from Master

Builders. One was a home that they had constructed under the new title of Bruce Design and Build, which won the Silver Award. Over his time as a builder in Nelson, Russell built up a team of 10 builders, many of whom he trained as apprentices and kept on because of their skill and work ethic. When he branched out into owning his own company, he brought his team with him. They work for Bruce Design and Build directly, not through contractors. This, along with their respect for Russell, means that they always work to the highest standard to uphold the company’s reputation. In 2011 Isaac Alder, one of Russell’s apprentices, was awarded Local Apprentice of the Year. He then went on to win New Zealand’s apprentice of the Year. He is still working with Russell for Bruce Design and Build, and makes up just part of the impressive building team.

Bruce Design & Build work closely with reputable local contractors and companies creating styish homes that their customers love. Bruce Design and Build are fortunate to have Russell’s own home as a means to show clients what a completed home looks like. The house demonstrates the workmanship and gives an example of products and fixtures. They have also built five of the neighbouring houses, along the Tussock Place cul-de-sac in Stoke. This gives them what is almost a show home village, but with more variety; they have an example of a two story house, houses in different price ranges, even one that is on a steep site that required significant earth works before construction could start. The houses are all occupied, however the owners have all said they’re happy to show perspective clients through to give them an idea of what an actual Bruce Design and Build home looks like. This is a comment on the positive ongoing relationship Russell fosters with all his clients. Bruce Design and Build have many long term professional relationships with some of the best contracting companies in the district, who they take on to complete the specialised work in houses they build. The contractors provide the highest standard of workmanship for the best price. If, however, you have a preferred company of your own, or would like to source the work to a friend or relative in the trade, Bruce Design and Build is able to accommodate. As they have no obligation to any company through a franchise, they can be very flexible to your desires to personalise your home. Working for his own company rather than for a

franchise also means that Russell has no overheads. Your building costs won’t include overheads such as franchising rights, meaning they can keep your costs down while you still get the same, or better, quality. Your home will be completed on a fixed cost contract, meaning that there are no hidden costs or additional fees. Whether you’re after a house and land package, have already got the land and are hoping to build, or even rebuild on your own section, Bruce Design and Build can take care of it. They have an in-house designer with an architectural background who you speak with initially to figure out your house plans. Whether you’ve got something in mind or need a professional to determine the best way to build on your particular section, the designer can work with you to get a plan that you’ll love to live in. Russell’s background in the housing industry and having worked as a builder himself means that working on a timeline and to a deadline is second nature. He understands that providing the highest quality on the timeline discussed is paramount, and will work to get the job completed in the best possible time frame in relation to the scale of the build. As your biggest investment, you want to achieve your dream home, and with Bruce Design and Build, you can.

Say No to Leaky Buildings

50% of Leaks in Leaky Homes occur around Window & Door Cladding Junctions. The Flashman Flashing System is the Solution. 50 Year Durability.

Russell Bruce (front row center) and his team of builders (back) Will Conlon, Nathan Gibson, Isaac Alder, James Pomeroy, Jacob Cox, Bevan Schwass, (front) Ben Alder, Aaron Mitchell, Tom Bruce and Steve Wilson. As well as trying to achieve the highest standard of living for you and your family, Russell is also environmentally aware and conscious to build energy efficient homes. Whether it’s prioritising under floor insulation to ensure effective heating and lower energy bills, or solar heated water systems and rainwater collection systems to make your home more efficient, he finds solutions that not only save the environment, they’ll save you money in the long term and make your home more comfortable. Russell has experience in all aspects of the building process, and prides himself on being able to provide what a housing company can at a lower cost. Your home will have a 10 year guarantee with Master Builders, so you can build stress-free. They will take care of the entire process, including design, council approval and construction, so that all you have to do is look forward to enjoying your newly built home. Bruce Design and Build have based their business from Russell’s home in Tussock Place, and have recently expanded to have offices at 8b Kotua Place in Wakatu. This is due mostly to their involvement with the National product called Flashman, which is de-

signed to stop significant leaks that have become a common problem around aluminium windows. The Wakatu offices have room for a workshop in which to manufacture the Flashman window system. Since aluminium windows were first introduced 40 years ago, there has never been an adequate flashing system. This combined with NZ’s unique climate; window and door cladding junctions have been responsible for 50% of the Leaky Homes academic. Heavy reliance on silicon sealant as a flashing has been, and still is, the cause of many leaky buildings. The Flashman flashing system is the solution – it has been invented by New Zealanders to protect Home Owners, Designers & Builders by eliminating leaks at the junction between the cladding and aluminium joinery. Russell says that after explaining its benefits to clients, they always want to use the Flashman system on their new home. If you’re looking to build your dream home, visit the experienced and professional team at Bruce Design and Build. Visit the website at www.brucebuilders. co.nz or contact Russell to discuss your plans, and he and his team will take care of you.

Two chances to win!

Two draws were held for the first time on January 19. One was a new draw that is increasing weekly, and the second was for the $1500 that had gone unclaimed in the weeks prior. Member No 1524 wasn’t present to claim the $500 draw, and Member No 661 was also not at the Club, and missed out on the $1500. January 26 saw Member No 661 drawn for the $600, but due to absence was unable to claim the prize. Member No 1394 was also absent, and missed out on the $1500 draw. The $700 draw was unclaimed by Member No 390 on February 2, as was the $1500 due to Member No 99 not being present at the club. Last week’s draw, held on February 9, saw Member No 72 miss out on the $800 draw, with Member No 50 also missing out on the $1500 prize on offer as neither was at the Club. The member’s draw is awarded weekly but you have to be at the Club to claim the prize, so make sure you’re there on Thursday; it might be your number that’s drawn.

Club Waimea welcomes outdoor bowlers Club Waimea has expanded, with the recent decision to allow Richmond Bowling Club Inc. to become part of the Club. The addition was affected after a rule change was discussed and approved at a special general meeting, held on February 8. The incorporation of the bowling club is beneficial for both parties, with a significant increase in Club Waimea member numbers due to the move.

Richmond Bowling Club Inc. is delighted as they can now take advantage of the space available at Club Waimea, as well as the facilities on offer which provide all the required services. In recent years outdoor bowling has moved towards shedding the reputation of being the sport of retirees, with many younger people taking it up and realising the benefits of the

skilful, social sport. A variety of competitive tournaments will be run by the Bowling Club throughout the year, as well as Business House and other introduction tournaments for those not yet confident in their skill. These are a great way to get involved with the sport, and provide Club Waimea with an excellent opportunity to welcome new faces to their community.

Club Members on Tour A contingent of members took advantage of the Nelson Anniversary long weekend, using the opportunity to get away for a few days. The group left at the break of dawn on Saturday to make the trip down the west coast in time to take a conducted tour of the impressive Stockton open cast coal mine. Members donned reflective vests to admire the aerial ropeway, constructed in 1953 to assist in bringing the coal up from the mine’s depths. The group spent the two nights in Karamea socialising and enjoying the coast. Sunday was spent in the Oparara Valley,

with some choosing to bushwalk while others drove to the entrance to the Heaphy Track and sorted out other items of interest. An early start was had by an eager few who went up the Mackley hills to admire the wilderness and river. Others spent the morning at the Westport Coal museum, before everyone regrouped for the journey home. A brief stopover was had up Mount Murchison before arriving back in sunny Nelson after a memorable weekend. If you’d like to be a part of similar getaways in the future, get in touch with the Club.

Gr wing Things

With Robyn Hollis

Hello again – February is now upon us and thank goodness we have had a very quiet start to it. Nothing more to report in the “silly things” area and having just come back from another Nana break in Christchurch. The photo this week will be easily recognised as the beautiful Now Available flowers of the Eucalyptus ficifolia. I saw this tree while walking down the Railway Reserve this morning and asked Johnno to take a shot as the colour is amazing. It always means “summer is here” to me when these lovely eucalypts start to flower. The bees love these blossoms also as the tree was literally humming as I walked past. We spent a lovely weekend pottering in the garden, bringing in our wood for winter and generally tidying up. I should tell you a little about Beryl. She was a remarkable lady who became a good friend and I met her while working as a volunteer 59 Saxton Road, Stoke for the Foundation for the Blind several years ago. She was 93, blind and nearly totally deaf, still living on her own (with good family support), and was still a very keen gardener. She grew a lot of her own veges and had saved seed for many years from dwarf beans – they were very tasty – and from tomatoes that she and her husband were given by the Italian growers in the Wood area of Nelson about 40 years ago. Keep picking berry fruit, peaches (we have eaten all our fruit from the dwarf peach –delicious!) plums etc as soon as they ripen to stop the birds getting them. • Rake up fallen fruit and leaves to deter wasps from hanging around. • Thin out fruit on apples, pears and citrus so that remaining fruits are spaced about 10-15 cms apart. This encourages more even-sized fruit and also helps young trees establish more readily. • Prune out the old canes from raspberries, boysenberries etc when they have finished fruiting and train up strong new canes to take their place. • Roses – continue deadheading and to help with the last flush of flowers, trim all new growth back by about a third. Keep feeding them and ensure they get good water regularly. Also keep a good eye out for pests on new growth. • Keep picking zucchini to encourage them to produce and take out the lower leaves from tomatoes to allow for more even ripening. • Do not put tomatoes in the fridge as they will lose flavour. Pick them when just turning and put them in a bowl inside to ripen at room temperature.

Q& A Q: From Linda who is a Waimea Weekly reader. She wanted to know more about her cactus and sent in a lovely photo. Linda you are quite correct in thinking it is an Echinopsis Pachanoi. Also known as the San Pedro cactus. A: We opened quite a can of worms with this query for more information Linda so here goes: This particular cactus often goes missing from peoples gardens in the Nelson area so I have been advised to tell you not to have it on view from the street as you may well lose it. It has strongly hallucinogenic properties and I am told that after much boiling down and straining of the juice the end result is supposed to give quite a feeling of euphoria. However – it is very unpleasant, causes vomiting and other side effects which can be quite dangerous so this use is to be avoided at all cost! One good thing about this cactus is the beautiful flowers. They are short-lived as this helps the plant retain moisture. They are best grown in the ground as they lose energy when in a pot and do not do so well. They are easy to grow and if you cut them across they will branch out. They also are spineless which is a real bonus for a cactus. They will handle frost very well and really are worth growing as the flowers are quite stunning - just keep them around the back of the property!! I do hope this added information is all you need Linda. Q: From Judy in Stoke – She wanted to know why her cauliflowers were turning pink. “The seed was “Phenomenal Early” and it was from Watkins. A: I phoned Yates, (who distribute Watkins) and spoke with a delightful lady called Denise who told me the following: “They do not believe it is a seed problem. Good news is it is not a fungal disease or a pest. Genetic purpling can occur when plants are exposed to too much sunlight – they can either turn yellow or pinkish purple around the edges at first.” They suggest keeping the head of the cauli covered with the leaves as much as possible and it should help the problem. If the leaves are turning purple as well they suggest you check the level of magnesium in your soil as too little or too much could be adding to the problem. Eat and enjoy your pretty Cauli – hope that helps! Until next time – happy gardening,

Robyn

Rope in your friends for Tug of Peace Tug of Peace organiser Phil Wright is encouraging Waimea residents to rope in their friends, colleagues and team mates for the annual Nelson Hospice fundraiser. The Tug of Peace will be held in Richmond for the first time in its 13 year history, following many years on Trafalgar St, Nelson. The last Tug of Peace was held during the Rugby World Cup, which was part of the reason to move it to Tasman. Sundial Square will be the backdrop with teams of eight competing to see who is Nelson’s strongest. Past winners have included the Tasman Makos, fire fighters, police and forestry

workers, but Phil says the competition is wide open this year. Phil is encouraging friends, family and sports teams to enter. “We’ve got a trophy. It’s a hand carved trophy which will be on display and the winning team will get their names engraved on it,” he says. The event is free to enter but there will be raffles to help fundraise for the hospice. To enter, fill out a registration form from Farmers, Richmond Mall or download from the event’s website www.nelsonhospice.org.nz. It begins at 12:30pm this Saturday; participants should be there for 12noon.

Water-logged areas of Rabbit Island could open in the next few weeks Low-lying picnic areas on water-logged Rabbit Island will remain closed for the coming weeks. Rabbit Island endured the worst flooding in its history, following the December floods, according to Tasman District Council parks and reserve manager Beryl Wilkes, and continued high water tables have seen many of the island’s top picnic areas under water for two months. While slowly drying out now, Beryl says it has been a much longer process than first expected. “I’ve never seen it like that before. It’s had a lot of water. Probably in the next two or three weeks it will be open again.

There’s one area that is quite a lot wetter than others,” she says. Any further rain would lengthen the time until it was fully open. High tides compact the water on the island creating a “bubble” in the water tables. The island has been signposted and fenced off stating contaminated water is in the area. Trevor James, a resource scientist for the TDC, says the fences are now only there to protect the ground conditions from cars and people. He says they were still unsure of the direct cause of the contamination, which had exceeded the limit for recreational parks.

Dance party thrills for the tenth year The Wairoa Gorge hosted an alien invasion for the tenth year running over the weekend, making Alien Nation the longest running is active outdoor dance party in the country. Close to 350 people of the alternative breed landed up the right branch of the valley for the tenth Alien Nation dance party. According to Moxely, a local DJ and crew member the name Alien Nation refers to anyone who has felt alienated from the norms of society, and the festival is a place where those people can come once a year and be part of a community. “If you feel like an alien, we welcome you,” she says. Unlike a number of other festivals with big name acts, this event is proud of its underground music. Psychedelic trance, progressive, minimal and Techno are just some of the genres of dance music that featured over the four day event. The organisers describe Alien Nation as “a unique festival that opens new dimensions of the mind. Allowing you to see, hear, feel - experience the primal music of New Zealand talent in a beautiful native

environment along with carefully selected Underground Producers and DJ’s from around the world”. Event organiser Warrick Harrinton says the festival is a place where people can relax and listen to some great music or dance all night, but one of the most important components is creating a safe environment to enjoy it in. The top of the south is a “perfect” place for outdoor music events, he says. “The location is a perfect fit for Alien, beautiful weather and fantastic people is the reason why we’ve been coming back here for a decade,” says Warrick. The local economy will also benefit from the influx of people to the area as quite a lot of the ‘aliens’ from overseas and around the country holidaying in the area afterwards. Wairoa Gorge resident Peter Russ says he doesn’t mind having the aliens descend of the valley. “They don’t cause any trouble so I’m happy for them to get on with what they want to do. My daughter’s fruit stall might even get a few extra sales,” he says.

Members of the Nelson College rugby team got an early pre-season workout as they helped pull a 1940 International ambulance through Richmond to Nelson. ASB Bank and Marist Rugby Club also took turns on the fundraiser. The ambulance pull was designed to raise awareness and collect money for a new events ambulance that St John is currently fundraising for. They have raised $56,000 to date and need

to raise a further $69,000 to meet their target. The ambulance took two hours, with plenty of stops, to get to Nelson. St John’s Sarah McCabe wanted to thank all the teams that took part. “I’d like to say thanks to all the teams and everyone who donated from passing cars, it was a great day and the vintage ambulance pull was a first for Nelson.” To donate, visit www.stjohn. org.nz/nelsonpuzzle. Motorbike legend and man of many skills Paul Dowell makes his way up some rocks ahead of the NZ Ihatove Adventure Trial this weekend.

International trial riders descend on 88 Valley The third annual NZ Ihatove Adventure Trial is set to take place in 88 Valley, near Wakefield, this Sunday. The event attracts riders from all over New Zealand and Japan and tests riders’ skill, negotiating obstacles including rocks, sheer walls and tyres. The popular Goldpine Team Xtreme riders from NonStop Adventure will also be on hand to entertain spectators and play hosts to the event. The rider-friendly event is all about fun and participation, a recipe that has been working very successfully for over 34 years in Japan, the home of the Ihatove event, says organiser Stephen Oliver. “The founder of the Japanese Ihatove event, Yasuo Manzawa is keen to see this type of event grow in New Zealand as it has become very popular in Japan. This event caters for all levels of rider which helps to give the weekend a fun atmosphere which is very well received.” Top World Podium rider, and multi Japanese

Ingham hungry for Nuggets Phillip Rollo A shift to Dunedin could spell more game time for former Nelson Giants guard Tom Ingham. The 18 year-old has enrolled at Otago University and will find out in the coming weeks whether he has made the cut for the Otago Nuggets NBL squad. Tom trialled down in Dunedin about a month ago and has been included in a 20-person training squad. The final 15-man roster will be confirmed next month and Tom says the feedback from the coaching staff had been positive; however he did not want to chance his luck. “I don’t want to get over confident but we’ll see how it goes,” he says. Tom filled one of the two mandatory development roles with the Nelson Giants in 2010 before moving on to the full team roster in 2011, playing just one game. Ruben, along with Tasman Rugby League, are hosting the day, starting with a free breakfast, followed by coaching, skills and drills, family activities and games and the opportunity to have your photo taken with the Rugby League World Cup, held by the Kiwis. TRL chairman Paul Lafotanoa says the day was fantastic last year and he hopes families are keen to come down and have a fun day out. “It’s a really enjoyable day and the kids just love it. Ruben is fantastic with them and last year they all went away with a big smile on their face. They not only learn the fundamentals of League, there are a heap of other activities for the whole family.” TRL is running the Primary Schools Competition for the Simon Mannering Cup again this year, kicking off in a couple of months. The carnival kicks off at 11am this Sunday, for more information email trlsecretary@xtra.co.nz.

Tasman District Council Navigation Safety Bylaw: Speed Limit Suspension and Reservation of Kerr Bay Lake Rotoiti, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 March 2012

Rider Training – Learn how to be a better motorcycle and scooter rider

The NZ Antique and Classic Boat Show will be held at Kerr Bay, Lake Rotoiti between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm on both 3 and 4 March 2012.

Sunday 12 February 2012 – Advanced Riders on road training

Pursuant to powers provided to the Harbourmaster by the Tasman District Council Navigation Safety Bylaw 2005 (Amended 2006), the speed limits imposed by the Bylaw in relation to vessels within 50 metres of another vessel, or within 200 metres of shore or a structure are suspended for those vessels taking part and controlling the event. Also, exclusive use of Kerr Bay, Lake Rotoiti out to a line which heads due east from a point 200 metres south of the Brunner Peninsula is provided to the event organisers. The reserved area will therefore include the water ski access lane and those areas of water immediately adjacent to the launching ramps and beach at Kerr Bay. Vessels wishing to transit through or enter the reserved area during the event may do so only after consulting with the event organisers, and then may do so when, and under such conditions that the event organisers may choose to specify. Event communications may be using UHF radio, or Channel 17 on Marine VHF radio. Vessels entering or within the reserved area are requested to comply with any direction given by the event organisers or event officials relating to passage through that reserved area as if it was a direction given by the Harbourmaster. Persons wishing to swim from the lake shore or waterski are recommended to use West Bay. Waterskiers should deep-water start anywhere more than 200m from shore outside of the reserved area, unless towed at less than 5 knots to or from the 200m line.

Saturday 11 February 2012 – Progressing Riders on road training Progressing Riders: for those just starting out, or without any formal training. Learn some practical techniques to keep yourself safe on the road. Advanced Riders: for those wanting a tune-up. This is a chance to brush up on your skills and fill any gaps in your knowledge. To enrol or find out more contact: Krista Hobday Ph. 03 543 8551, email: krista.hobday@tasman.govt.nz
