Teen duo seek movie stars Phillip Rollo Two budding movie makers are looking to launch their careers by creating their first ever feature length film. Garin College students Alexei D’Ath, 16, and Jake Robinson, 14, are about to take on a feature length film about a group of teenagers that overcome bullying and they’re hoping to predominantly use disabled actors. Alexei has spina bifida and is hoping to include other people with disabilities. “For me, I have a disability and I know what it is like to have one. So I want to help people with a disability and give them this fun opportunity to be in a movie,” he says. Alexei says working with multi media is something that has always interested him and making his first ever film would be a great experience. The plot will be based around a school boy called Sam. “It’s based around their life at high school and all of the problems they come across,” says Jake. Jake will be doing the music for the project as well as starring in it. The pair are now in the process of securing volunteer actors for the movie. There are no requirements for the acting roles. Seventeen to 20 years-olds will be used as bullies and children, and teenagers will fil the extra positions. Adults will also be needed. To contact Alexei and Jake about Garin College students Jake Robinson, 14, and Alexei D’Ath, 16, are being in the film, which begins filmgoing to be directing a feature length movie starting in April. Nominations open for hospo awards
The hospitality awards are back for 2012 with nominations opening this week. The New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards recognise the best bars, restaurants, chefs, bar staff and maître d’s in the region. To nominate your favourite venue or person fill out the form on this page and send it away to the address on it or drop it off to the Waimea Weekly office. Once nominated, readers will vote for their favourites via voting forms to be printed in Waimea Weekly, with the winners being announced at a glitzy ceremony at the Trafalgar Centre on May 14. The awards are organised by Hospitality New Zealand and the Restaurant Association of New Zealand. Hospitality NZ regional manager Jeanette Swift says the awards are always popular and they encourage

people to make sure their favourite venue is nominated. “The awards are really prestigious and because we only hold them every two years people do get quite excited about them. So it’s important that people nominate who they think deserves to be recognised for their efforts.” Categories include best waiter/ maître D, best bar person, best bar, best cafe, best restaurant, most outstanding ambience and service, most outstanding ethnic cuisine, most outstanding entertainment venue and most outstanding suburban venue. There will also be categories for best chef but these will be judged by experts as opposed to voting from the public. Nominations close Friday March 30 at 12 noon, so cut out the nomination form on page 13, fill it out and make sure your favourite venue is up for an award this year.

A public display of love has prompted one local man to ask for the cupid to return and put the rocks used to make make a sign back where they came from. The sign made in the Waimea Inlet in front of the Richmond Racecourse was described as “environmental vandalism” by a Coastline Cleanup volunteer. The estuary is described as “unique” and “massive asset for our region”. The volunteer Ian Jonson says he has removed 457 tyres from the Tasman Bay shoreline and he hopes the artist of the sign will return to put the rocks back.

High flyers head for Motueka Phillip Rollo Hope man Bob Wagner doesn’t go for a Sunday drive, he walks out to his shed and pulls out his aircraft for a Sunday fly instead. Whether it’s a 20 minute play around the skies of Wakefield and the Moutere or a 30 minute flight to Blenheim, there isn’t one week that Bob doesn’t get out in his plane for a fly. This weekend, though, Bob is heading to Motueka, along with hundreds of the country’s microlight pilots, for the RAANZ National Fly In. Fly ins are held annually and it was only four years ago since the Motueka Airfield last held the event. Since then it has been in Stratford, Masterton, Rangiora and other central areas of New Zealand. It is hosted by the Motueka Aero Club in conjunction with the Nelson Microlight Club. The National Fly In gathers all of the pilots together for a series of challenges, educational workshops and a chance to discuss rules, regulations, microlight law and experiences and is going to be held on March 16, 17 and 18. Whilst it’s recreational, Bob says plenty of ideas get thrown around and you don’t go away without learning something new. Bob learnt to fly in the late 1960’s when microlights hadn’t even been invented. Instead, Cessnas and Pipers were the most popular. “In those days I liked to fly and I liked to sail boats. I don’t know what
Bob Wagner is one of many local microlight pilots heading to the National Fly In in Motueka this weekend. Photo: Phillip Rollo. young people wanted to do these days, but I want to fly and flying is fun,” says Bob. “Have you ever been flying?” Well my answer at the time was no, but ten minutes later and I was heading down Wagner Airfield into the sky, and it was easy to see how Bob got hooked. Microlights, which Bob described as “another word for a plane,” refers to lightweight, one or two person fixed-wing
aircraft. They will outperform a two-seat Cessna. “They will leave it for dead, both in speed and getting onto the ground. Everything will be better than in a Cessna.” They are not known for their “across the country” capabilities, but Bob has managed to get as far as Hamilton in his microlight. The majority of participants heading to Motueka will do so by plane. Surprisingly it is not an expensive exercise
flying from one city to another in your own plane. A four-seat Cessna will chew up 55-65 litres of fuel an hour. But a twoseat microlight will only use up 15-17L an hour, meaning just about anywhere in the South Island is within reach in less than two hours. “If you want to go for a Sunday afternoon drive in your plane it will use a lot less fuel, you go a hell of a lot further and it’s more interesting.”

Tasman coffee drinkers will have the opportunity to taste the famous Kopi Luwak coffee, which sells for $60 a cup in the United States and $40 a cup in Melbourne. But if the price of the world’s most expensive coffee hasn’t knocked you off your chair wait until you hear how it’s made. Kopi Luwak is produced by the Asian Palm Civet animal – which looks like a cross between a cat, a possum and a ferret – that chooses to eat cherries off a coffee tree and then dispose of the green beans. The animal chooses only the ripest cherries and manages to pass them through its body intact with the coffee hulls still attached. While in its digestive system a combination of the stomach en-zymes that break down the cherry from around the green bean inside (this is usually a human job and takes a huge amount of time and methods) produces such a unique flavoured coffee. It’s said to be very mild and spicy. Hayden Thompson, of Pomeroy’s, says 5kg of the coffee was imported to New Zealand recently and he was able to get a hold of a 1kg bag of it. He says he will be roasting it this week and host-ing an open night where people can come and taste it for a reasonably modest amount of around $20 per cup.

Rainbow riders raise $7800
It took a lot of pedalling to get 40 bikers from St Arnaud to Hanmer but in doing so they raised $7800 for bible distribution amongst the South Pacific. The Rainbow Ride, which raises funds for the Bible Society, is always a big challenge for both riders and bikes and this year’s effort took between six and ten hours for the keen cyclists. Along the way, on a beautiful Saturday, there was plenty of opportunity for riders to enjoy the company of others and to take in the amazing landscapes. They are hoping to double the numbers next year.

Home Grown Midwives In 2009 an article was written about local women embarking on the journey to become midwives. They made up the first cohort of the Nelson/Tasman satellite of the joint CPIT/Otago Polytechnic Bachelor of Midwifery Degree. The course was 50% theory and 50% practical with the majority of the practical placements undertaken with self-employed midwives in the area and in Nelson Hospital. However, there were frequent trips to Christchurch and placements on the North Island and even as far as Bali! After three years of hard work, juggling commitments and reliance on the kindness, and understanding of their families and friends they have joined the New Zealand Register of Midwives. Hannah Straker, Kelly Mahuika, and Angela Hayes are now self-employed midwives caring for
women throughout pregnancy, labour, and birth, and up to six weeks after birth. They are all participants in the Midwifery First Year of Practice Program developed by the New Zealand College of Midwives to support graduate midwives. They also feel fortunate to be well supported by the strong collegiality of the local midwifery community. They would like to thank all the midwives for sharing their time, knowledge, and skills with them, but special heartfelt thanks goes to all the women who have been so generous over the past three years in allowing Hannah, Kelly, and Angela to learn from them and their whanau. They feel it has been a real privilege and important in shaping their midwifery practice today.

Just a thought... “The Bright Field” by R.S. Thomas I have seen the sun break through to illuminate a small field for a while, and gone my way and forgotten it. But that was the pearl of great price, the one field that had the treasure in it. I realize now that I must give up all that I have to possess it. Life is not hurrying on to a receding future, nor hankering after an imagined past. It is the turning aside like Moses to the miracle of the lit bush, to a brightness that seemed as transitory as your youth once, but is the eternity that awaits you.*

They are only a part of “a receding future” or “an imagined past”, and the rushing towards them just harms health, family and our relationship with God. One of the things I love about Jesus Christ is the way he was late to things – once so late that the person he had gone to visit had died before he arrived. But he implied it didn’t matter, rather it was important to turn aside and relate to the people along the way (and of course on arrival he prayed for the dead and decaying Lazarus who rose to live on for a number of years). When was the last time you slowed But in our region, sadly, people are down, turned aside like Moses and not slowing down and turning aside sought that pearl of great price? The Inaugural Leigh Barton
AGRICULTURAL DAY
Friday 16 March
10am to 6pm Leigh Barton Farm (entrance off Foxhill Cemetary Road, Foxhill)
Proud to support Leigh Barton Agricultural Day
The inaugural Leigh Barton Agricultural Day will be drawing in crowds this Friday, the culmination of months of effort and excitement from those involved, including Julian Stone, who has organised the event. Dozens of businesses have eagerly put up their hands to be involved, eager to run stalls and give demonstrations of their products or farming equipment on the day. It’s a great opportunity for the stallholders as well as the public; with free entry and free car parking it’s sure to bring people through the gate giving them the opportunity to see the impressive pieces of machinery in action and talk to those with experience and knowledge. The event will showcase a huge range of machinery including chainsaws, tractors and lawnmowers. Gough, Gough and Hamer will be covering all things logging, and Digitec will be on site to talk about computers and rural communications. Harris Training Services can even renew your Growsafe Approved Handler certificates on site. It’s not all going to be your everyday farming equipment either. PK Engineering are work-

The show will be run on Julian Stone’s own property (Leigh Barton Farm) in Foxhill, with entry from the end of Foxhill Cemetery Rd. Signs will help direct show goers, with plenty of parking at the event ground. Hello again. Like all of you I am sitting here under yet more cloud waiting very patiently for the ”Indian Summer” that is always Nelson in March. As they say in the Tui ad’s; “Yeah Right.” Still, we should not grumble – the North Island is really getting the brunt of this weather – and maybe we will have a nice mild winter. I am making regular forays down the back path to the blackboy peach tree and giving the fruit a little squeeze to see if it is time to harvest and also we are really happy to see the quince tree colouring up and fruit starting to turn that beautiful golden colour. If I am sounding just a little desperate - things are grim in the Hollis household! We are down to the last jar of quince jelly, the paste is all gone and there are only two jars of preserved blackboy peaches in the cupboard. This is cutting things way too fine – just as well the trees are laden with fruit. I feel that this weekend will herald the start of the March bottling and jelly season. What are you still eating from your vege garden? We are still harvesting tomatoes, courgettes (zucchini), runner beans, silverbeet, last of the beetroot has been pulled, lettuce, spring onions and herbs. Not too bad but some things are slow to ripen and powdery mildew is hitting the leaves of some plants quite badly.

winds!) and impatient gardeners (like me) can’t wait to get rid of the mucky bits and replace with a nice bit of colour! Impatiens (busy lizzies), tuberous begonias, bedding begonias and potted colour like the vinca’s, zinnias, marigolds etc can fill gaps and will flower for many weeks yet. Gazanias are another big bold flower that does well in a sunny spot and is pretty wind tolerant. • This is a good time of year to take stock of what you can change and how you can improve the colour and texture around the garden for next season. • Look at the borders and choose plants that give a bit of a colour boost like Heucheras, such as Lime Ricky, Amethyst, and Palace Purple. Tiarellas are good value also as they have a lovely variegated foliage as well as the fine white stems of fluffy flowers. • Silver leafed brunneras, “Jack Frost “ (perennial forget-menots) pulmonarias, and scabiosa, all have good form and foliage that lasts all year through and they really do not need much attention. Just a trim and tidy of the lower leaves is all that is required. • Now is time to trim the leaves of your hellebores – winter roses, to ensure they are not harbouring aphids and mealybug. Cut back lavenders, pelagoniums, and tidy hydrangeas that are starting to look a bit tired. Also deadhead geraniums to keep them flowering longer and also keep feeding with a liquid plant food and Seasol to encourage stronger plants for the next season. Autumn is the best time for planting larger trees and shrubs and also the best time for transplanting smaller trees or shrubs that are looking unhappy or just not thriving in their garden position. Before moving a plant however, it is best to check with your garden center as some things move better than others. Natives do not like being shifted as a general rule but Rhodos, camellias, hydrangeas, maples etc can be moved with care and will do very well.
• In the flower garden Autumn can be a disconcerting time for novice gardeners. Perennials are starting to die down, most annuals are past their best (my petunias were looking fabulous until the last big

Q: I was asked by a gentleman last week when was the best time to plant his broad beans. A: You can start preparing your garden area any time from now until the end of April. You need to dig your garden over to a spade depth and add some good compost, blood and bone and sheep pellets. If you plant now you will have to ensure you water well and also keep a wary eye out for pests which are still enjoying the warmer conditions. I tend to wait until the end of March and had a good crop last year. Have a good weekend in the garden,

BabySpace - Lynda Richards
Why do you only provide for children up to three? Children of this age have specific physical, emotional and social needs. These are best met in an environment that is secure and predictable while still flexible enough to offer the challenges they need to build and practice new skills. BabySpace is very wellresourced and has a stable team of trained teachers who get to know the children and their families very, very well. What are the children actually learning here? At this age we see big changes in the children’s sense of autonomy – this growing independence comes as they develop physical and verbal skills, and increasing social competencies like turn-taking, problemsolving and supporting others. Our care-

fully chosen resources, safe environment and small group size support the children to fulfill their own learning potential. What advice do you have for parents looking for a centre? Quality early childhood education is closely linked to small group size, positive relationships between children and the adults in the centre, and a low turnover of staff. When parents visit a centre they need to allow enough time to be able to observe and ask questions about these aspects of centre life. Parents who are looking for a small group environment with a high teacher/child ratio and a very special atmosphere are welcome to visit Lynda and the team at BabySpace or see the website at www.babyspacenelson.co.nz
What is going to happen with the change from analogue to digital? The transmission will be turned off and you will have no reception so call me now. When is this happening? April 2013. If your TV has Freeview built in you will need a UHF aerial or a satellite dish with a set top box.

Greenwaste to Zero - Patrica Murrow
Does your compost have weed, seeds, diseases or toxins in it? The hot temperature reached during our composting process kills all weeds, seeds, diseases and toxins. Do you use “fillers” eg, bark in the compost? No we do not use any fillers. You are buying pure organically produced compost. Can I plant straight into the compost, or will it damage my seedlings? You can plant straight into the compost. It has cooked for two year and is just like black soil and causes no damage to your seedlings. The garden is mostly clay soil, how will the compost help?
Our compost works on the clay and heavy soils breaking them down. It is full of nutrients, feeding your garden for up to two seasons. With natural compost will I have to add chemical fertilisers? There is no need to add anything. Our compost is full of nutrients and will feed your garden for up to two seasons. What is the difference between the fine and chunky compost? It is the same compost, they are just different screen sizes. The chunky compost gives great aeration and drainage and is used for filling gardens and planting into. The fine compost is for spreading and digging in. We stock both grades.

Tasman Homes - Garry Nott
How do your customers benefit from calling you as an expert instead of one of your competitors? We pride ourselves in both our transparency and flexibility. It is paramount that we cater for each client’s specific needs and wishes, and to have a level of honesty and trust in order for the client to know we are going to give them the best experience possible when building their new home. They will receive a high level of service and workmanship from experienced craftsmen. Garry oversees all projects and therefore the client is dealing with him directly for the duration of their project. What is the most common question you get asked? One of the common questions we are asked during the initial contact with a new client is
whether we use ‘set plans’. The answer is simple. We meet with potential clients and establish what they would like in a home and go from there. There are no set plans and therefore no limits or constrictions within which we have to operate. We build for a number of people who have plans already in place with either an architect or designer. We also have a number of architects and designers we work closely with when people come with a basic idea of what they would like to build. How did you get into this line of business? Garry has over 20 years of experience in the industry and has a real passion for building and for working with people. In 2007 the opportunity came up to buy Tasman Homes, an established local construction company, with a great long standing reputation.
Do you want your new home within budget, on time and with a builder who believes that their success depends on your complete satisfaction? For quality homes with individual style.

Ashton Kilties under 12s (Nelsons Champion team and 3rd South Island Team)
Best of luck from Marching Nelson for New Zealand Champs in Hamilton 15-18 March. Both these teams have trained hard all season for this and coach Jodie Jenkins along with Marrianne Fenwick (co coach for Ashton Seniors) have done a fantastic job with these girls to get them to the standard they are at. Both teams leave for Hamilton on Wednesday morning and are looking forward to some fantastic results up there. Thanks to everyone who has supported these teams through their fundraising this season.
The Haier Appliances Central Pulse were in town on Saturday to meet, greet and train Nelson’s youngsters. The trip was part of the ANZ Community Roadshow, which is being held throughout the country this month. Sixty girls took part in the morning session with 80 partici-

pating in the afternoon. The girls were involved in shooting challenges, passing challenges and one on one defence. There was also time afterwards to get photos and autographs from their favourite players. Silver Fern legend Temepara George also made the trip as an ambassador for ANZ. Nelson Netball is alligned with the Pulse, and Nelson Netball’s development manager Trish Lowe says it is important that they continue their relationship as it gives the region’s players something to strive towards. “Absolutely, it’s fantastic. We love them coming down,” she says. Trish says it was another strong showing following last year’s visit.

From My Desk
With our weekend behind us, bringing us a beautiful Saturday to spend time outdoors, and a lazy rainy Sunday where it was the perfect time to catch up on a good book or in my case filing cupboards with baking and catching up with family, I hope you are both rested and ready to enjoy this week. My focus for the week-Sunglass Style. I recently purchased an additional pair of sunglasses, needing a sports style for running. I discussed my needs with Sophie, who manages the store and she gave me fantastic advice with a few choices that would suit my needs. The pair I choose are absolutely perfect in suitability, look, and comfort. The girls in this team are knowledgeable on both style and specialty, and the selection to choose from of Dior, Bolle, Adidas and Serengetti to name a few is superb. With the sun setting lower in the sky in the afternoons, now is a great time to head on in to Sunglass Style and update your look. At Fashion Island our stores and team aim above the mark to hit the mark. Have a fabulous week and I look forward to your visit at our Fashion Island.

Wolves and Rabbits impress at Nelson Nines Tournament It was two of the out of town teams that dominated the inaugural ProRugby League Nelson Nines League Tournament with Aranui Eagles going through the days play undefeated and heading down the Lewis Pass with the trophy in hand. Aranui defeated Wellington side Toa in the grand final 20-6, after both teams had topped their pools at Trafalgar Park, Aranui, who were the clear favourites in the nine-a-side tournament, surpassed an impressive Stables Richmond Rabbits side in the semi finals 28-6. The tournament was the first time the Rabbits had played together and showed they will be one of the front runners when the TRL begins in a few week’s time, although they could be sweating on an injury picked up by the mercurial Eliot Smith.
Toa beat Wanderers Wolves 20-10 in the tournament’s other semi final, which featured plenty of heated moments. Last year’s TRL champions Stoke Cobras defaulted in the fifth and sixth playoff, handing the victory to Wairau Taniwha. Stoke pulled out of the clash due to an increasing number of injuries. The Victory Vikings beat the Tahunanui Tigers 24-16 to claim seventh place, in an entertaining match. The tournament was well organised with hundreds of spectactors coming through the gates during the day. There was Tasman Titans merchanside up for grabs for those that dressed up. It is hoped the Nelson Nines Rugby League Tournament will bring in the country’s top rugby Shamus Eltham crosses over for a try in Wanderers Wolves opening match against Wairau Taniwha. Nikita Lunjevich, Charna Thompson and Amanda Sim are encouraging more women to join the WOB team for the coming season.
Women seek new players After an outstanding 2011 season culminating in winning the finals, the Waimea Old Boys women’s team is ready to face the new season. The team already has 18 girls signed up but is still looking for some new faces to join the upcoming campaign. Stacey Davis, pregnant with her second child, is taking the season off playing rugby and will instead manage the team and be its official team sober driver. “I’m due on the finals day which could be interesting,” she says. A dedicated player, taking a year off is a tough call for Stacey who organised her wedding day to coincide with a team bye last
season. “We’re thrilled with the number of girls already signed up for the team and coming to pre-season training but we’re always keen to recruit some more. No experience is necessary and there’s still time to join us training on Thursday nights at 6pm and get fit and see if rugby is for you.” This year, Brendan O’Connor returns after a year off to coach the girls and will be assisted by Kane Hart. The girls’ season starts on Saturday April 28. For more information please contact Stacey on 0272267811 or email rubix_chick12@hotmail.com.
The Waimea Amatuer Swim Club took a team of seven swimmers to the South Island Town and Country Championship in Cromwell and the majority of them collected personal best time. They competed as the Nelson Marlborough team and came home with a medal for second place overall on points. Records tumble at school champs The region’s top young athletes ran, threw and jumped into the record books as seven records were broken at the Tasman Secondary School Athletics Championship on Saturday. It was the first time in the events history that it was staged on a weekend, with all of the secondary schools from Golden Bay through to Marlborough taking part. Tapawera Area School’s rising talent Chris Brake got himself amongst the record books again, leaping 1.96m to equal his personal best in the Boys Under-19 high jump. Chris raised the bar to two metres, but was unable to clear the height in his three attempts. He also won

the triple jump with a distance of 13.07m. Waimea College’s Brendon Barnett was another top performer. Brendon won the Boys Under-19 100m in 11.35 seconds, the shot put with a throw of 13.89m, the javelin in 49.46m, the long jump in 6.62m and ran in the winning 4x100m relay team. Emily Jensen won the Under-19 girls triple jump, long jump and the 400m. The top two athletes from each grade gain automatic qualification into the South Island Secondary School Athletics Championship which will be held at Saxton Oval from March 31.
