Armed police descend on Richmond Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Nelson police want to reassure the public that they are safe after schools and businesses went into lock down and Bateup Rd was closed while armed police descended on a Collins Rd property in the second Armed Offenders call-out in Richmond in the last month. The latest call-out followed an incident at Sun City Motors at Three Brothers Corner just after 10am last Thursday when a 35-year-old man allegedly threatened another man with a shotgun. Armed police arrested the alleged offender after a nine-hour search that involved over 40 police officers. It was the second armed response in Richmond in the last month after police searched for a man at a Stratford St property on May 5 following a robbery in Collins Rd. Armed police were also present when police descended on a Bateup Rd property to execute a search warrant on March 10. Nelson Bays Area commander Mat Arnold-Kelly concedes

that two armed responses in the last month is unusual but stresses that police are “thoroughly trained” to use firearms and only employ them “if they deem the risk needs it”. He says the safety of the public and their officers is always paramount whenever there is an incident involving firearms. Although Mat says police have “historically been reluctant to arm themselves, all constabulary members who work in response have access to firearms”. He also says police have gradually been increasing the number of firearms, tasers and ballistics vests available to staff and are using them “more and more” in response to the risk associated with increased gang activity. “Certainly, with the increase in gang activity and methamphetamine, which is closely linked with gangs, we are coming across more firearms. But that’s not just in Nelson Bays - that’s a national issue, it’s just representative of what’s happening nationally.” Matt says he wants to reassure

“No, I still find it quite safe. I was very pleased to see two policemen walking around Richmond Mall the other day. I hope that means that there are more police in Richmond.”

“I only just moved here from Australia six weeks ago, but talking to family and friends it’s apparently getting a lot worse than it has been.”

Stage one of upgrade nears completion

NEW

Simon Bloomberg There’s “light at the end of the tunnel” for retailers who have been affected by the Queen St upgrade with engineers promising a quick conclusion to the problematic first stage of the $11 million project. The upgrade, which started on February 7, is designed to increase the capacity of stormwater pipes and direct water away from buildings on Queen St to prevent flooding. However, the first stage of the construction between Gladstone Rd and McIndoe Pl has taken a lot longer than expected, with the completion date being extended from mid-May to late June. And last week, the Tasman District Council confirmed that the deadline has been revised again with a new completion date of July 6. “We have obviously revised the timetable but we are on track now,” engineer’s representative for the project, Don Young, says. “A lot went wrong for us on the first stage but we have got over our major issues on site and, from next week, they can get the big machinery in and things will move quickly. “A new crew will be coming in and levelling it off and compacting it and coming through with the roading trucks. One of the next steps will be starting the curbing and once they start that you’ll

A Richmond company is engineering its own solution to a shortage of skilled staff by doubling the number of apprentices and employing a training coordinator so that it can continue to meet the demand for its services. Trinder Engineering, which also owns Hope-based Waimea Engineering, has just taken on seven new apprentices with another three to be employed in the next few months. That will bring their number of apprentices up to 19, double the number the two businesses usually employ, and increase their staff to around 95. Trinder managing director Kerry Hill says they needed to stepup their training programme to “meet our current and future growth needs while maintaining our reputation for quality engineering”. Kerry says they decided to “engineer our own solution” to the staff shortage because there is “a real lack of skilled applicants in the market”. The demand for their services is based on the region’s strong economic growth, he says. Many of their big clients work in forestry, viticulture and road transport and all three of these sectors are

“busy”. “Other people’s businesses are growing, so we have to grow to support them,” he says. Kerry says they are pleased with the quality of their latest intake of apprentices who will spend four years and 8000 hours training as fitter turners and fitter welders. “Young people get a bad rap at times but we are very pleased with the high calibre of the young people who have joined our work sites recently. We look forward to providing them with a safe and rewarding career and a good future in engineering.” The two companies have also employed Gordon Laird as a full-time training coordinator as part of the initiative. Gordon’s brief is to “oversee junior staff and provide ongoing trade and safety training to all of our team”. “Gordon is adding a lot of value to our training programmes with his strong engineering background and many years as a training provider,” Kerry says. One of Trinder’s new apprentices, Dan Rusbatch, says he has always wanted to become a qualified engineer and jumped at the chance to do an apprenticeship at Trinder.

“I’d been working in engineering as a labourer for five years but wanted to get a trade,” Dan says. “The company I worked for didn’t have any apprenticeships going, so when I got the opportunity to do one here I took it.” Trinder Engineering and Waimea Engineers are also fully supporting the new Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology’s managed apprenticeship programme this year. Kerry says that’s providing more opportunities to “tailor the training to suit our business and local industry needs”. “The management team at NMIT have been very good to work with and share the same commitment to training as we do,” he says. NMIT’s engineering apprenticeship coordinator Jeremy Classen says they started the general engineering programme last year and are delighted that Trinder has come on board. “Trinder has a great name and really leads the way in training apprentices, so we are thrilled they have given us a vote of confidence,” Jeremy says. NMIT has 19 general engineering apprentices enrolled on their courses.

Nelson adventurers feature in award winning NZ film Simon Bloomberg Two well-known Nelson mountainbikers are now movie stars after featuring in an awardwinning film about an epic rafting and biking adventure from St Arnaud to Kaikoura. Photographer Grant Stirling and mountainbike park designer Damian Stones joined former Nelson adventurer Deane Parker, Christchurch film director Simon Waterhouse and raft guide Samuel Jones on the six-day journey in February this year. Damian produced a short film about their adventure titled Waiau-toa Odyssey, which last week won the Hiddleston MacQueen award for best New Zealand-made film at the New Zealand Mountain Film Festival. Grant says they started in St Arnaud and mountainbiked wilderness tracks and packrafted down white water rivers to Kekerengu, just north of Kaikoura. They carried small oneperson packrafts, life jackets and paddles on the handlebars of their bikes allowing them to complete the 300km journey without support. “All of us have done mega-trips before but this was very different from anything I’ve done,” Grant says. “The independence part of it made it unique, especially with the combination of biking and white-water rafting. “It was a real effort but we had an amazing journey. It’s something that will be with us for years.” Grant says the mountainbiking and scenery were amazing but the highlight of the Odyssey was shooting big white water rapids in the packrafts. A self-confessed “poor kayaker”, Grant says paddling grade three-plus rapids in a small raft loaded up with a mountainbike and camera equipment was “a little bit puckering”. “There was a very real possibility of losing a boat and bike, but we got guidance from Deane and Sam and got through without any problems - it was a real adrenalin charge.” Damian, who has designed pump tracks and bike skills parks in Ngatimoti, Murchison and Tasman, and for Auckland Point School, says the adventure was “about taking his bike to places which would otherwise be hard to access”. The new packrafting and bike-packing gear “gave us all the tools we needed to get to places and explore terrain that hadn’t been ridden before,” he says. Thieves hit construction site in Richmond Thieves cut through “several padlocks” to break into a storage container and steal “up to $20,000” worth of tools from a construction site on Salisbury Rd over the weekend. Senior sergeant Blair Hall says

the tools belonged to builders working for Gibbons Construction on the new Days Plumbing site next to The Car Company on Salisbury Rd. They were stolen sometime between Friday night and Monday morning. Police are still compiling a list of the tools that were stolen but items included “builder’s tools” like battery drills and skill saws. Blair says that a vehicle was almost certainly used in the burgla-

ry because of the quantity of tools stolen and he asked anyone who saw anything suspicious outside the site to contact police. A police forensic team has examined the site to collect evidence, he says. “This wasn’t an opportunist theft. They certainly would have used a vehicle to transport the stolen property and put a bit of planning into it.” Police are also investigating a

Four Square owners say goodbye Jessie Johnston

Saying farewell to a community like Wakefield was certainly tough for former Wakefield Four Square owners Stuart and Jacqui Hore, however, the pair are also excited to be moving on to their next business challenge in Waimate. Stuart and Jacqui owned and operated the Wakefield Four Square for around 10 years before selling it to new owners who officially took over on Monday. “We’ve purchased a New World supermarket in Waimate, which is a community that is quite close to where Jacqui and I were born and grew up in Oamaru,” Stuart says. “It’s a community that, the more we find out about it, is very special and very similar to Wakefield - it’s just on a larger scale. “It’s an opportunity for our own personal development and to look at doing what we’ve done but on a much bigger scale. That’s the challenge for us, even though it’s so sad to say goodbye to Wakefield.”

Stuart has always worked in the industry, but on the other side of the fence, supplying supermarkets. They decided to take the plunge and purchase their own store and were keen to be involved with Foodstuffs South Island, a Four Square at the top of their list. “Back then there were about 84 Four Squares in the South Island and we had about 10 located in different communities that we would have been

quite happy to look at purchasing if the opportunity came up, and we were able to secure the store in Wakefield,” says Stuart. Community support and their staff have always been high on the list of things Stuart and Jacqui have loved about living and working in Wakefield. “It’s all about supporting the people that support you, at the end of the day the store has grown immensely in the last

10 years and if we didn’t have a supportive community then we wouldn’t have been able to do that,” says Jacqui. Giving back to the community has always been possible thanks to their participation in the Foodstuffs Community Trust, which has helped the local knitting group, the skatepark, Wakefield School, the football club and many more over the years. Highlights include playing

host to the Four Square television advertisement a few years ago. “To actually bring in some of the community customers that we’ve had, as actors within those commercials, was just fantastic,” says Stuart. The Wakefield community gathered at the fire station last Thursday to wish Stuart and Jacqui well, as well as meet the new Four Square owners, Phil and Ruth Bell.

Dam costs to be discussed Tasman district ratepayers and Waimea Plains irrigators will have to pay more to get the proposed Waimea Dam project “across the line” after operational costs were underestimated by more than $600,000. Council had previously estimated that annual operational costs for the $82million dam would be around $700,000 but council announced on Monday that, after “more complex analysis”, the annual operating cost is now estimated to be in the order of $1.3 to $1.4million. Chief financial officer Mike Drummond says the biggest drivers of the increase are increases in material damage insurance of $365,000, public liability insurance ($100,000) and council rates ($215,000). Council will be considering its funding contribution to the dam at a meeting on Wednesday. Ladies learn self defence Jessie Johnston They may have been learning in a fun and encouraging atmosphere, but the lessons shared during the Women’s Street Smart Workshop were part of a much more serious topic. Around 25 ladies from Nelson and Tasman came together last weekend at Saxton Oval Pavilion for a two-day self-defence workshop, organised by Nelson Newcomers Network volunteer, Mary Somervell. “I talked to my manager and we decided that it was a good idea,” says Mary. “Part of the reason why I had thought of it is I was working as a health interviewer for the Ministry of Health, so I was visiting people in their homes and quite often I would be in situations that I was not prepared for. “I had also come across women who I thought were living in very vulnerable situations, so I’ve always thought that it’s good for us to be empowered and to be able to defend and protect ourselves.” The two-day course covered a number of defence techniques for situations including slaps, punches and grabs, headlocks, wrist grabs and how to use hands, legs, knees and elbows as tools for defence. “I think it’s been really good, actually, I’d like to do more of it just to keep it really fresh in my mind,” ays Richmond participant, Winnie Manning. “It was probably a bit more emotional and scary than I thought it would be, because it’s not just the physical side, but we’ve been asked to shout at each other and really imitate an attack, so it’ really quite full on.”

Are you building, renovating or decorating? “From the moment I walked in the door stressing due to service or lack of it elsewhere, they were amazing to deal with… Highly recommend and will certainly use again.” - Leah Keown “I heard about the great service at ColourPlus in Richmond so walked in with my new house plans with wallpaper in mind…I can highly recommend calling in to see the team at ColourPlus / COMMERCIAL for a great product range, friendly and knowledgeable service!” – Jane Fairs

Hitting close to home Judene Edgar Making social connections is a key focus for Age Concern Nelson Tasman for Elder Abuse Awareness Week this year, which starts on Thursday, as part of their ongoing commitment to preventing elder abuse and neglect. Age Concern is a charitable organisation dedicated to improving the quality of life and well-being of older people across Nelson and Tasman. Elder abuse and neglect prevention advisor, Mal Drummond, says that preventing isolation and helping older people to develop their own social connections has been found to help prevent abuse and provides a supportive network for older people who may have experienced abuse. “Isolation and loneliness gives abusers an opportunity to take advantage of a vulnerable person”, says Mal. He recently supported an older gentleman who had been financially abused by a friend, and despite knowing that he was being taken advantage of, he told Mal that “having a bad friend was better than having no

Nelson Tasman Civil Defence emergency management officer Michelle Griffiths and intern Kelsey McLean delivered that message to Waimea Village residents last Friday. They also donated bags to each home in the village containing a ‘What to do’ booklet, a guide to emergency planning, key contact numbers and a checklist of items to have ready for an emergency. “People often don’t realise that

A former Search and Rescue volunteer, committee secretary John Hewison says that it is important to ensure every resident in the 172-home village is prepared. BabySpace is Richmond’s early childhood setting that specialises in care and education for children aged 6 months to three years. In recent years there has been a renewed interest in young children’s brain development and its relation to early childhood care and education. The research unfailingly proves that the early years, particularly ages zero to three, are the most crucial. Every experience and interaction a young child has can have a profound effect on the way their brain develops, thus the quality of the early years is a key factor in how a child may fare in character development and academic pursuits now, and in later life. The teaching team at BabySpace is very experienced and qualified at meeting the specific needs of your young child in a calm inclusive environment. Come in and visit us at 5 Chelsea Ave, Richmond, to see why we are the first choice for many families, or give us a call on 544 1106 or visit our website for more information.

When it comes to transport engineering, a certified and qualified team is vital for quality workmanship that’s safe on the road. Active Engineering Services Ltd specialises in transport engineering offering repair, design and fabrication services to clients, whether it’s for a domestic horse float or car trailer, right through to a commercial log truck and trailer. When a trailer built by the team is travelling along the road at 90kph, it’s a bit like a constant force 10 hurricane and an eight on the Richter Scale, so to create a vehicle and a trailer that will handle such forces, the team requires a lot of skill. Owner Graham Adams has owned and operated the business for over nine years and is proud of the high standard of workmanship that comes out of his workshop. His team are certified welders and each have a comprehensive background in the engineering industry, as well as a knack for offering innovative solutions to meet their client’s requirements. Whether it’s a domestic trailer or the complete fabrication of a log truck, Graham and the team are more than capable of completing the job, so give them a call today to discuss your requirements.

Nelson painting company Total Decorating cleaned up at the national Master Painter awards in Auckland earlier this month winning eight gold medals.

The ten-strong team at Total Decorating won medals across the board for exterior painting on a house, interior painting in new houses, interior painting in renovated homes and wallpapering. Owner Aaron Mallinson says the number of gold medals they won was a shock. “I wasn’t even going to go to the awards but I got a phone call suggesting it would be in my interest to do so. So I thought we might be in the hunt for one, I was shocked that we won so many.” He says the win was validation for what has been a few years of hard work. “The team we have here now are great and that’s the reason. But we’ve spent years getting

I’m stoked for them because it’s always nice when you’re recognised at this level.” Aaron says the Master Painter awards told him there was only one other medal ever given to a Nelson company before this year. “That highlights how special this is, I think. It’s great for Nelson to be doing so well at these kind of awards.” Officially, Total Decorating received two golds in the residential exterior under $25,000 category; three golds

in the residential interior under $25,000 category; a gold in the new interior over $25,000 category; a gold the new interior character renovation category and a gold in the residential wall coverings category. They were for work done on various homes in Nelson, including houses for David Reid Homes and Jason Gardiner Homes. Aaron says it shows that when it comes to the higher end of the market, Total Decorating are one of the best in town to make the most out of top architecturally-designed homes.

“The award I was really happy with was the wall coverings one and that was one of our guys Richard Crompton. Years ago I was his apprentice and he’s outstanding at his job, so that was really nice to get for him. But our work across the board is of a very high standard.” Total Decorating also work along side GJ Gardner Homes, Ferguson Contracting, You Build, Charlie Harwood Builders, Signature Homes, Mark Douglas Builders, Urban Box and would like to thank Craig at Dulux NZ for his support.

Ross’ silent progression SportS at Richmond Athletic Jacob Page Ross Sloan admits playing football can be a peaceful experience. The talented midfielder, who is playing division two football for Richmond Athletic is deaf, but despite the limitation is impressing everyone at the club with the quality of his play. Ross wears a cochlear implant to be able to hear what is going on around him each day, but takes it off for football because of the risk of it being damaged. The Scottish-born player says after being diagnosed as deaf at 18 months old, he started playing football at age five, as a way to make friends. “The doctors advised my parents that I should be doing more to be sociable, so instead of being stuck indoors I gave football a try. “I can either be the most peaceful guy on the field or the most vocal. I need to be more aware than most people about what’s going on around

me on the field and I’m always looking for a player in support.” Ross says football means a lot to his life. “Football has given me the chance to be myself and without it I wouldn’t have the social life that I do have. Ross works in civil construction and is in New Zealand on a one-year visa. The 23 year old says he’s loving playing with his Richmond division two team but has the goal of paying division one football by the end of 2017. He says he is open to staying in New Zealand but that it depends on his work. “I have the goal of playing first team football for the last couple of games of the season but I’m lacking a bit of fitness and awareness around the field to make that jump. Richmond first team co-coach Steve Clark and star striker Ben Harris have been impressed with Ross’ progression since joining the club which suggests he is on the right track to making his dream a reality.

Chatham Cup Nelson Surburbs have drawn fellow Mainland Premier League team Coastal Spirit in Nelson in the third round of the Chatham Cup. The game will be played on the weekend of June 24-25. Netball Nelson Netball and the Trafalgar Centre will host the first ever Super Club netball competition this July. The event will run from July 2 to 7 and will feature eight teams from Europe, Africa, the Americas and Oceania. The top three teams from the ANZ Premiership will qualify for the tournament. Football A 10-man Nelson Suburbs team beat Nomads 4-1 in their Mainland Premier League match at Saxton Field on Sunday. The win keeps their faint title aspirations alive.

Target Shooting Nelson’s new $450,000 facility looks set to put the sport on the map. The new facility at Saxton Field opposite Saxton Oval was officially opened on Saturday with the national body of the sport confident Nelson would host many national meets in the future. The club has had to fund-raise for the project with no council funds used to get the inside of the building completed. “There’s been more than 2000 man hours from volunteers and a lot of businesses around the region have been very generous,” club president Alan Gibbs says. Rachel McLean is one of the top shooters in Nelson and a New Zealand Smallbore representative who won her second open championships win a fortnight ago. The 34-year-old says she has loved the sport ever since she started it at age 12. “I had been very sick. Before that I was a very active kid but

Photo: Jacob Page. I didn’t have the stamina to play traditional sports and my nurse, whose son was a shooter, took me to the range and I was hooked.” Rachel loves the social aspect of the sport which she says is more mental than physical. “It’s very disciplined, you have to take into account your breathing and keep your shoulders relaxed because if one of those things are out of the or-

dinary, it can really affect your score.” The other thing she likes about the sport is how it is done on an even playing field. “The great thing about it is that women can beat men and age isn’t a factor. “I know some days I shoot really well and the next I have lost my rhythm a little bit and people beat me. It’s all part of why I love the sport.”

Garin College’s Aston Inwood’s sporting abilities have him on the fast track to success. The multi-talented 14-year-old is a promising first five-eighth in rugby, a power forward in basketball, an all-rounder who averaged 149 as an opener in his age-group school team. He also enjoys long distance running. While in Australia as a young child he remembers playing AFL but he

remembers that once he came to New Zealand, he played soccer, with his first memory being on the scoresheet 11 times in one game. While many sports have come easy to the talented teen, it hasn’t always been a top outcome. Aston’s burst appendix went undiagnosed in November 2015 which had him in a serious condition in hospital. Phill Jones ‘humbled’ with No.13 retirement Jacob Page Phill Jones looked up at his newly-retired No. 13 Nelson Giants singlet and said there would be no more come backs. The face of the Giants franchise confirmed that, despite coming out of retirement three years ago and even filling in when import Kyle Adnam was injured for a couple of games in 2017, his singlet would not see active competition again. The retirement of his and former player-coach and owner Nenad Vucinic’s No. 4 means no player will ever wear those numbers for the Nelson Giants again. “It’s pretty humbling to be recognised in that regard,” Phill says. “When you think about guys who have had their numbers retired, maybe not in the NBL but in other sports, who have contributed to other sports organisations around the world, it

means a lot.” Phill played an extra 39 games for the Giants after announcing his first retirement three years ago. From 1993 to 2017 he played 398 games for the Giants to go with 10 games with Otago in 1999. He won NBL titles 1994 and 1998 and played in Finland, Greece, Italy and Australia. He played for the Tall Blacks in two Olympic campaigns and three World Championships between 1994 and 2010. Nenad played for the Giants between 1990 and 2000 amassing 227 games, including five seasons as a player-coach. He coached 237 games and won the NBL title as a player in 1994, a player-coach in 1998 and a coach in 2007. Finn Delany was named Giants MVP for 2017, while Aussie import Kyle Adnam was named the Supporters MVP.

Waimea 10A have had a bumpy start after the unfortunate resignation of the team coach to other work commitments, however team manager Karla Thurlow has stepped in to lead this group of talented girls, supported by team manager Melanie Neve. Captain Chelsea MoffittNeve and vice-captain Kari Brown lead this team on the court and with Chelsea playing mid court/defence and Kari playing defence, they ensure that the team is united. The girls’ vocal presence and encouragement can be heard throughout the court. Shooters Talia Gray, Milly Thurlow and Aimee Berkett work together closely to outwit and out run the opposition. Their shooting stats, sharp eyes and quick hands

continue to improve vastly as the season progresses. Centre court is filled by Jade Gower, Lareiana de LeonMcGrath, Sofia Sampson and Chelsea Moffitt-Neve. Their role is bringing down the ball and feeding into the shooters, their precise passing and quick thinking playing is an important role on court. Defence players are quick to think and react and Kari Brown, Taylor Suckling and Lara Goulding make up a hard-working defensive circle. Their never give up attitude, long reaches and ability to read the play make them a tough line to push through. Karla believes that the girls are starting to play more as a team and if they can continue to improve on their fitness and cohesiveness they will do well in Christchurch in July.

“We had no intensity, which is completely understandable after the performance in the final. “Having said that, we can’t take anything away from Marist, and what they did, because they saw an opportunity and played bloody well and they deserved to win.” Waimea looked set to mount a second half comeback, thanks to a dominant scrum. A penalty try from an attacking scrum and then a try each to first five Eli

Kneepkens and No 8 Jeff Lepa got them within striking distance but even coach Milne admitted the better team won, and his side was fortunate to earn a bonus point. The table is now congested with teams looking to claim top spot and home advantage for the semi-finals. It doesn’t get any easier for Waimea Old Boys as they travel to take on Nelson at Neale Park this Saturday. Nelson beat Waimea Old Boys by one point in their first meeting of 2017.

Tongan church meets on the hill If you have enjoyed beautiful singing coming from Church on the Hill on a Sunday afternoon, you can thank our Tongan brothers and sisters. Every second and third Sunday in the month, the Free Church of Tonga meets in Richmond under the leadership of Pastor Sam Vailea and his wife. The couple have been part of the Free Church of Tonga in Nelson for the past 20 years and set up the Richmond church one and half years ago. They now have twenty-four people from five families attending the Richmond services. “We feel very lucky to be part of this community. We thank God that maybe this is the plan he gave to us to move to Richmond,” says Pastor Vailea.

The church also has vegetable workers attend who come to the region every year for seven months to work in the market gardens. “They stay with one of our church families on the farm,” he says. The rest of the church congregation are locals. Anyone can join them for their services. “Please feel free, you are very welcome to join with us. Come to enjoy the beautiful singing and our service,” he says. The other Sundays in the month, the Richmond church joins with those in Nelson at the YMCA hall in Vanguard Street. But the Richmond church is here to stay. ‘We feel very comfortable here and feel part of the community God has given us in Richmond.”

A small trust but a big heart St Andrews Family Trust had its beginnings in 1887 when a group of people saw the need to support orphaned or needy children of new settlers. Subscriptions were raised and the Trust was started. Initially many of the children were placed in what we would now term foster care. As the need grew family homes were set up. The name of the Trust has changed at times but the overall purpose has not. The purpose is to help and support children and families in a non judgemental, caring way showing active Christian love.

In the 1960s a purpose built home was built in Cautley Street in Richmond and this became the family home that has seen many children pass through. Some children lived there for many years, others only briefly. This home has now been sold and the capital invested to provide funding for projects which meet the aims and purposes of the Trust. More information can be found at nelsonanglican.org.nz/standrews-trust — Vicky Stocker, Trust Chair

Opinions shared amongst friends The Men’s Forum discusses topical, non-religious subjects.

discussion took place and we still parted company as friends.

In March the topic was superannuation. With the Government having announced that the age of eligibility will rise from 65 to 67 in time, questions arise; Statistically women live six years longer than men. Should they receive super six years later than men? Mãori have a shorter lifespan than Pakeha. Should they receive super earlier? Should there be a difference in eligibility between manual workers and say accountants or schoolteachers? Not surprisingly, no consensus was reached but a very wide

In April the topic was, where is the balance between farming and clean waterways? In May the discussion was on should 16 year olds be able to vote in general elections in New Zealand? If you would like to come and share your opinions, this men’s group meets on the last Monday evening of the month - ring the office for more information.
