Wild pig runs riot in CBD A wild pig ran amuck around Richmond yesterday, racing into a construction site and charging at workers before it was caught by police at Washbourn Gardens. Estimated to weigh around 30 kilograms, the wild pig was being followed down Oxford St before darting into a Coman Construction site. Foreman Kris Renwick says it came onto the property at about midday. “I turned around and there was a pig just standing there,” he says. “It must have been running down the footpath but it came on site and next minute it started having a go at one of the guys who had to jump over it.” Kris says the pig’s next move involved jumping over foundations, running at another worker who was holding a wheel barrow. From there it ran towards Washborne Gardens where it was eventually stopped in its tracks by members of the public and

police. John Bergman, a contracted animal controller for the Tasman District Council, confirmed the incident and says the pig was tied up and put in the back of his truck before being taken to the pound. “Reports were coming in from Richmond where people had been seeing it and then the police got involved at Washbourn Gardens,” he says. John also says there had been a citing in William St last week and it was realistic to believe it could be the same pig. He says it is common for hunters to keep hold of pigs until they are grown up, if the mother had been killed. If the pig is not claimed it would be sold at auction.
Spring lambs spring to life Spring has almost sprung, and some parts of the region are experiencing signs of an early onset despite the season usually kickstarting in September. Joan Duncan, a local lifestyle farmer, says the lambing season has well and truly arrived on her Pigeon Valley farm and that it could be put down to an

Deadline nears for elections With just two days until nominations close, the distinct feature of this year’s council elections is the lack of candidates. Only three Richmond ward councillors have confirmed their position at the start line to Waimea Weekly, and with four seats for the ward, it could be a rather dull race. The three incumbents in the Waimea/ Moutere ward – Trevor Norriss, Tim King and Brian Ensor – are all standing again and as of Tuesday afternoon they were the only three. In 2010 Stuart Bryant won the Murchison/Lakes ward uncontested and at this stage he is the only candidate for 2013. The biggest news in the race for council seats is the re-emergence of Michael Higgins as a candidate, he confirmed to
Andrew Board Editor
andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz the Weekly he will stand in Richmond after losing his place in 2010, after 15 years as an elected member. Two of Richmond’s current councillors – the tireless Judene Edgar and Zane Murfin – are re-standing, while the other two are moving on. Glenys Glover has decided not to stand and Kit Maling is standing for mayor. While there is plenty of time for the fields to fill out before Friday’s noon deadline, the major talking point will be the mayoral race where Mainland TV’s Gary Watson has joined the race for Richard Kempthorne’s job. That means those standing for may-
or now include Kit Maling, Richard Kempthorne, Maxwell Clark and Gary Watson, who has tried and failed three times to be elected mayor of Nelson City. With only a small number of nominations, Tasman’s electoral officer Sandra Hartley is urging all aspiring candidates to get their papers in. “Expectations have been high with in excess of 50 information packs picked up since the nomination period opened but this expectation has not been met, with the low number of completed nomination forms returned to the council,” she says. Brent Hodgkinson knows how to produce good sheep, so good that he’s earned national praise for it. The fourth generation Tadmor Valley farmer and his wife Bernadette are one of five finalists in the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Sheep Industry Award’s sheep supplier of the year category, the winner of which will be named in Invercargill tonight. Even if the Tadmor Valley pair don’t win, Brent says just being nominated as a finalist is a big win for the region, which is generally overlooked in national sheep circles. “This district is not known as a sheep farming area because it’s so diverse; there are cows, apples and everything else. When you talk to people from outside the district they say ‘oh you farm in Nelson? I didn’t know there were any farms’. So it’s quite good to think we can produce lambs as good as the people in the main farming centres,” says Brent. The meat companies who export lambs were asked to nominate their top supplier based on their own criteria. Brent and Bernadette were nominated by Alliance Group, and Brent believes they lent to-

Our lambs consistently yield well. You want them between 14.5 kilograms and 21 kg because the optimum price is about 17kg and it’s scaled less either end of that, so if you hit that you get the best cents per kilo.” Brent says the difference between how much meat is on a good carcass compared with a poor one of the same weight can also been a factor. But picking which sheep will yield

well can take years of stockmanship. Brent only produces texel-perendale cross sheep in his flock of 3200 ewes and he says the best way to get an indication of its potential meat yield is by looking at its hind quarters and the depth of the body. “It’s pretty bloody hard but you can get an idea. You can look at two and say this one might yield better than the other. But the meat works tell us how they’re yielding.” Brent and Bernadette will attend the awards ceremony in Invercargill tonight alongside 300 other farmers.

Writing the life of our loved ones Phillip Rollo Reporter
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Dorothy Stanton presses record on her tape recorder and tells her subject to go from the beginning. She asks for basic details first; the names of their parents, where they were born, and how many siblings they had, before asking “now tell me everything that you want me to know”. The 87 year old is one of several Nelson Hospice volunteers that call themselves “life story writers”, people who write biographies on patients nearing the end of their lives. The biographies are given to the patients, who are able to read weekly drafts. They are shared amongst the family, giving them a full life tale, including some of the subject’s most personal secrets that some family members didn’t even know about. Dorothy – who just completed her 50th biography, which was on terminally ill Richmond man Murray Hanna – is clearly passionate about volunteering, having done so for the past 25 years, but she admits the life story writing is particularly special, phoning up as a complete stranger, and finding out everything about someone’s life. “At the first interview you find that they don’t know what to talk about,” Dorothy explains. “Then suddenly they look at photographs and it brings back all these lovely memories and you get all these wonderful stories.”
Dorothy Stanton shows Murray Hanna the biography she wrote about his life. Photo: Phillip Rollo. The process is beneficial to the patient, as the conversation and recollection is therapeutic, but it also gives family members a chance to hear stories that would have died too. “I’ve had family members come to me afterwards and go ‘how did you find out about that? I never knew that.’ I just tell them ‘well they just talked’.” With families living further apart, sometimes in different cities or even countries, Dorothy admits it can be easy for stories to go untold. She also says sometimes the stories were meant to be kept secret until now. The questions are simple, but the

answers are often very detailed. Topics such as ‘what was your refrigerator like?’ even appear during the interview process, which usually occurs once or twice a week. “The best way to start is what were your parents’ names? Have you got brothers and sisters? What were their names? … and it goes on from there.” Dorothy described the biography, which is given to the patient wrapped up like a birthday present, as “valuable” and she hopes to keep writing them, even if she has to be wheel chaired out to visit.

Civil Defence join Oxford St site A new building development on Oxford St and Wensley Rd will partly double as an emergency operations centre. Nelson Tasman Emergency Management is renting out part of the first floor of the building and will relocate from the “cramped and unsuitable” office space it currently occupies at the Trafalgar Centre. Four staff will be based at the Richmond site, which will also be used to lead responses to civil defence events in the Nelson-Tasman area. Jim Frater of the Tasman District Council says past lessons have been that managing an emergency from council offices posed
problems, and moving into a separate building follows the suit of other councils around the country. While the Canterbury earthquake and regional flooding in Nelson-Tasman has underlined the need for such a facility, this building has been planned for a number of years now. “The building itself has been specifically designed to withstand the majority of disasters, it will also be set up specifically to house the Nelson Tasman Emergency Management Office and it provides training space for council staff,” says Jim, who then went on to reinforce it is not designed as a high tech facility with over-

will overflow into the TDC buildings next door.” Oxford St has been a flood hot spot in recent times, but this was also taken into account and the building has specific flood and earthquake measures built into the design, which were again reviewed following April’s event. Civil Defence is led by both local councils and also includes other agencies such as emergency services. The building, which is owned by a private developer, is likely to open early next year. Work is currently being undertaken by Coman Construction.
Motorbike rider rammed off trail A Nelson trail bike rider has received international attention for a video showing him being confronted by an angry ram. Marty Todd’s YouTube video, in which a surly ram prevents him from riding up a dirt mtrack, has gone viral after being featured on CNN and the UK’s Daily Mail website. “I was riding my trail bike up a hill when I came across this grumpy old ram with huge horns,’’ Marty told APNZ. “It charged my bike then started attacking me.’’ Marty said he couldn’t turn his trail bike around as he was on a steep hill and if he did the ram would have charged him side on which could have broken his leg. “This guy is known for his aggression and attacks for no reason, he’s even attacked a group of pig hunting dogs. In the end I had to pick up a branch and wave it in front of him, he didn’t like the noise and backed off enough for me to make my escape.’’ To watch the video visit www.waimeaweekly. co.nz.

NY Marathon in Kevin’s sight Kevin Jourdain is hoping to tick off a life long dream in November by running the New York City Marathon. The 25 year old Richmond man who was born with cerebral palsy says running is something he has always been really passionate about, and it’s also something he’s good at. “I just like to run,” he says with a contagious smile. “There’s no particular reason. It might seem weird but I just love it.” Kevin, who is often seen riding his scooter through Richmond, chose November’s event because one of his heroes had also

He’s like me, he has cerebral palsy so it’s someone I can look up to in that way.” In the build up to the marathon Kevin has been training about four times a week, and that often includes running half marathons in his own time. “The other Monday I ran 21 kilometres but at the moment I’ve got a cold.” Kevin, who described running as a “re-

Nelson had all the right ingredients for a major political conference over the weekend and the city stepped up to the plate as well, with all parties enjoying their stay and in the process injecting a fair amount of cash into the local economy. The National Party conference on Saturday and Sunday delivered plenty of headlines across the country for the policies announced by Prime Minister John Key and the protests taking place outside the Rutherford Hotel, where the conference was held. The fun began on Friday night when John Key officially opened a new exhibition on former Prime Minister and Nelson man Keith Holyoake at the Nelson Provincial Museum. Recipes come flooding in for cook book
THAT’S A WRAP: Anne Laing got more than she bargained for last Wednesday, when she looked out the window of her workplace, Curves gym in Wakatu Estate, to find her car had been completely covered in Glad Wrap. The culprits? Regular gym-goers decided to treat her to a friendly prank on her last day at work, and in the early hours of the morning while Anne was indoors oblivious, set about wrapping her Ford Captiva in the plastic film. Anne has worked at Curves for nine years and is leaving to take a lengthy holiday overseas. She took the prank good heartedly but says she wishes she’d unwrapped it before the Waimea Weekly arrived. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.
Gwynda Campbell-Brown doesn’t like to toot her own horn but a quick chat about her cooking background is enough to learn she knows her way around a kitchen. Gwynda started working in a hotel kitchen at 15 and it started a passion for cooking. Now living alone, she doesn’t cook as often as she used to and as often as she’d like but the passion is still there and she wants to spread it around. Gwynda has submitted ten recipes for the Richmond Mall cook book, which is aiming to compile the best recipes from the cook books and minds of locals and give one great cook book to every home in the region. She says she first read about the cook book idea in Waimea
Weekly and thought it would be a good idea to be a part of. “I had a few favourites that I’ve entered but I couldn’t find the one’s I wanted but hopefully they’ll like them.” She says she like to experiment with recipes and over the years have development dozens of cook books of her own recipes. The idea of one of her recipes being in a cook book that will go to every home is quite a thrill she says. To submit your recipe for consideration simply pick up an entry form from the customer service desk on your next visit to Richmond Mall. When completed drop the form into one of the Richmond Mall entry boxes, the top entries will also win mall vouchers.

ADVERTORIAL
Bank’s customer first focus brings better banking to Nelson TSB Bank was set up in 1850 on the principals of self-reliance and independence. And 160 years on, those principals are still true today. It has grown into New Zealand’s largest and strongest independent bank. It’s been a great success story, but not one without its challenges. Back in 1985 the government proposed to merge all of New Zealand’s twelve independent banks into one big one. They delivered an ultimatum – get in line or be doomed. TSB Bank decided they didn’t want to throw away 130 years of independence. They knew it wouldn’t be in the best interests of their customers. The pressure to merge was intense – from the other banks, and the government. TSB Bank stood firm. The merger went ahead without them. But within a few years it faltered and was sold off to a big Aussie bank. How did it work out for TSB Bank? They went from strength to strength – with customers from Cape Reinga to Bluff, to all corners of the world. They’re still making their own decisions. Still giving customers the kind of care and attention they’ve always been known for. Putting customers first is as important to them today as it was nearly 28 years ago. As far as they’re concerned, it’s just a better way to bank.
100% New Zealand owned Not having overseas owners means that they can make decisions based on what’s best for their customers. So if they want to NOT charge you cheque, ATM1 or EFTPOS transaction fees, it’s up to them. Having real people on the other end of the phone when you call? That’s their choice too.
Customer first philosopy TSB Bank has been rated highest for customer satisfaction in the banking category over and over again. Most recenty they were awarded Canstar Blue’s 2013 ‘Most Satisfied Customers in Banking’ award which questions Kiwi’s on their satisfaction with their Bank across seven categories. It’s hardly surprising when you consider their amazing customer service record. So what’s their secret?
app, lets you open, close and even personalise how your accounts look. You can also sort your day to day needs through the TSB Bank Direct call centre. Their friendly staff can answer all your queries in person Monday to Friday, 8.30am until 7pm. They’re so helpful in fact, they won the 2010 CRM Contact Centre Award.
Fees? What fees?
“We are guided by one key thought: what would we expect if we were the customer?”
TSB Bank have a philosophy of low or no fees. There are no cheque, EFTPOS or bank owned ATM* fees, on any of their accounts. So how exactly do TSB Bank make their money? The oldfashioned way – they earn it.
Strong financial performance
Where does your money go?
TSB Bank’s Managing Director/CEO Kevin Murphy says:
TSB Bank has just reported an impressive 10.6% increase in pre-tax profit for the last financial year. Their Capital Adequacy Ratio (an industry measure of financial strength), at 14.56% continues to be one of the strongest of all banks in New Zealand. Kevin says “We’re totally New Zealand owned and all of our funding is obtained from within New Zealand – we rely wholly on the deposit support of our customers.”
Convenient banking Wherever you are in New Zealand, or the world, banking with TSB Bank is easy. There’s an office right here in Nelson, on the corner of Bridge and Trafalgar Streets. If you can’t make it to TSB Bank’s offices, HomeBank is their Internet, phone and text banking service – you can access your accounts, make payments, review transactions and transfer money. [my]bank2, the Bank’s mobile banking
TSB Bank’s investment strategy has always been somewhat conservative, and largely home loan focused. As Kevin Murphy explains: “Most of our investments, up to 70% of our assets in fact, go into providing home loans for everyday New Zealand families. This has been our investment mainstay for over 100 years now, and it will continue to be so.”
Full range of accounts on offer TSB Bank offers a rewarding range of personal cheque, transactional, savings and investment accounts. Whatever you want to do with your savings, TSB Bank has an option to suit.
Taking care of all your banking needs It’s not just savings that TSB Bank does well. If you’re in the market for a home loan, TSB Bank takes a flexible approach - you can mix and match from a range of options to suit your finances and lifestyle.

altogether. Needs sorting! (Via text). Yes, it’s easy to drive pass Richmond. I hope the signs wont be like the ones in the photo! Slightly boring looking. Need a sign that is bright and cheerful, that will make people think Richmond is awesome! haha. Jennie Teece. No, ‘cause it’s on the main drag through. If people really want to visit it there are plenty of signs pointing into the town centre. Ben Van Den Elzen. Am I the only one who thinks this is a spectacular example of needless and excessive Council spending of ratepayers’ dollars? D Shaw, Richmond. Clock found in Appleby farm: Haha now I can stop asking people where it’s gone! Loved that clock! Kimberly Martin. New retail building in Nelson: In my opinion Nelson should be focusing on locally owned boutique stores containing well designed, well crafted wares, things that have meaning and last, not just more “stuff ”. Nelson does not need to pretend to be a big city, we can be little, boutique and unique. Richmond

can have the mall, chain retailers and those that enjoy this sort of retail experience can do so in Richmond. Ishna Jacobs. I like the idea as Nelson does need a revamp however this would not make me shop there as I am in Brightwater and everything I need is in Richmond or will be soon (Warehouse and K-mart). Lisa Foote. Once the Warehouse, K-Mart etc goes in all Richmond needs is a cinema then there wont be much reason to go to Nelson. Rowena Hart. I think this is a good idea, it’s about time the council did something to make the cbd more appealing, personally I think it looks run down at the moment. Anton (via website). Perhaps the current Farmers building can be occupied by local boutique businesses, bringing character and uniqueness back into the CBD. Marilyn. So nothing new then - will be good to see Farmers in a new store but not what I was expecting given the hype before the announcement! Tania Brunell. Approaching a global depression worse than all before it. What shall we do? Build more stores to make more
people in debt!!! I guess the 1% will be fine though. Ryan Fouhy. Great to see investors willing to take the risk with this venture. Wish them the best of luck. Dave Trigg. Good to see a new retail building coming, great for Nelson. (Via text). At the present point in time Nelson is losing the race and may eventually be outrun. Any large development is a good thing for the city. Better still sell Trafalgar Park & use the money for a stadium at Saxton & build motels shops & conference centre in the city. Example; A nation wide tour & the man with the muppet isn’t even booked for Nelson. Live the day. Glen Jarvie. Fun at protest: Had a great time at the protests by the Rutherford today. Plenty of crazies out though, makes for a colourful day in Nelson. (Via text). Black Caps to play in Nelson: I see on your Facebook page that the Black Caps are playing at Saxton Oval this summer. This is great news and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but well done to the two councils for building that oval. My kids are already excited about watching it. (Via text).

30 years of teaching our dancers For 30 years Peta Spooner has been teaching the youth of Nelson how to have fun with dance, and despite the significant milestone she says she’s up for 30 more. Peta moved to Nelson with her husband in the winter of 1983 and within weeks held her first dance class with around 40 students coming along. By the end of that year she had around 100 students and has never looked back with tens of thousands of Nelsonians swivelling, twirling and stretching on the dance floors of the Peta Spooner Academy of Dance in the three decades since. The sheer number of people Peta has taught or influenced is staggering and she says she still loves it and her love of dance struck at an early age. “I’ve always taught, I remember very clearly when I was a kid that if other kids came over to play I’d make them all line up and dress up. We had a record player and I’d make them line up and dance. It’s instinctive and I have a great passion still to teach and to share and give to a community what I’ve been lucky enough to have.” She has seen around 25 students attend the country’s top dance schools and several more have danced for the Footnote Company. Peta Spooner Academy of Dance is also one of the very few in the country that is accredited to teach the teachers to fellowship level, the highest level possible, something Peta says she is very proud of. But her success, she believes, isn’t in helping those dancers and teachers at the elite level. “I’m always so proud of our kids who have gone on to dance, but equally proud of our kids who have gone on to be good people and to be happy and be part of a community. It’s really impor-

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz tant to me not to just recognise the ones who are good, but to acknowledge them all as equals.” In that vein, Peta also teaches special needs students and includes them in her end of year show. She also has several students there on a “kind of scholarship” and says being involved in the community is the legacy she’d like to be known for. She has also led dancing trips to Finland and Jamaica and fondly remembers when she involved dads in several performances by making them dance “Swan Lake”. “We introduced the men to do Swan Lake and we’re going to recall the swans this year for a reunion. We did that because dads only ever paid the bill, men never got a chance to be a part of the ballet thing, it was always the mothers and we thought ‘let’s do something to include them’.” She’s hoping to recall the swans for this year’s show to help celebrate her 30th year. She says teaching means so much to her, she can’t think of not being involved in the academy. “I just love it, I can’t imagine not interfering in people’s lives and bossing people around and doing just what I like. I’m very happy with the way the students, parents and my working team around me help out.” The academy now has five qualified teachers, plus two in training and around 180 students. She says the success of her dance academy is its involvement in the community, keeping up with the latest styles and innovations and the can-do attitude that has been its hallmark.

Just a thought... Andy Swanson is currently on board the M.V Pacific Hope, delivering a ‘new’ Mercy ship, to New Zealand from Japan. A number of members from Grace Church have been involved on the Mercy Ships over recent years. Andy writes from the bridge of the M.V. Pacific Hope
Over the past four months I have travelled twenty five thousand nautical miles through eight different countries. I have dealt in Hong Kong, Singapore, Solomon and New Zealand dollars, Pesos, Vatu and Yen. A humble can of coke has cost anywhere from one, to hundreds of the currency I have had in my hand. Often I found myself trying to pay with a note inappropriately sized or even from another country. The notes and coins came in different shapes weights colours and sizes yet all had one thing in common: value. To different groups of people each currency held value and, depending on which island I was docked at, a note could buy me dinner or be completely worthless. My struggle was in knowing the value of what I held in my hand. Next year the ship will be equipped with a hospital and will sail north to serve the people in the remote islands of Vanuatu and the Solomon’s. The medical services we offer can mean the difference between pain and sickness or health and

even life. The message we share has potentially even more value with a dividend that is eternal. To sow into this ministry whether it be as a doctor, seaman or even a dishwasher is to give a gift that has a value far beyond what we put in to it. For some items value is relative to its location. Copra (dried coconut) has little value on an island covered in coconut trees but when shipped to Malaysia or the Philippines for processing it doubles in value a few times over. The copra has not changed but the need for it has raised its value. The skills we are blessed with are a commodity, that when shipped into the Pacific are worth far more than the sum of our labours in New Zealand as the need is greater and the supply more scarce. The best news is that although we give our services for free this does not diminish their value and we are repaid in full to an eternal account that is neither taxed or at risk in hard financial times. Why should we give such a valuable thing as our time for free? God gave us the most valuable gift anyone could ever conceive, the death of his son for our shortcomings so that we might be acceptable to him. He commanded us to care for others even “the very least of them” in doing this we can demonstrate our obedience and love for the Lord. Neil Simpson 83; 2nd Vincent Bayley 80; 3rd Murray Shepperd 79. Ben’s firmly in the hunt
Nelson’s Ben Hunt has taken the slenderest of leads in the National Rally Championship after finishing second on the Canterbury Rally today in his Subaru WRX STI. Going into the last stage in the Ashley Forest near Rangiora, Ben was lying third overall and it looked as if Masterton’s Richard Mason would win the event in his Subaru WRX STI. But Richard’s car punctured a left front tyre near the start of the 13.74 kms stage. Richard and co-driver wife Sara continued through the stage rather than stopping for a time consuming wheel change. However two kms from the end of the stage they had to stop and change the offending wheel, ultimately losing nearly seven minutes. The 20 seconds lead they had over Chris West evaporated and they finished fifth overall nearly six and a half minutes behind. Christchurch’s Chris won the event by 55 seconds from Ben, with Matt Jansen (Christchurch) in another Subaru WRX STI third overall. Ben has taken over the lead in the series from Geraldine’s Haydon Paddon, who is now in Europe, competing in rounds

class winning front wheel drive cars. He won the previous round of the series, the Manawatu Daybreaker event, his first ever rally win. The remaining rounds of the championship are the Pukekohe based Possum Bourne Memorial event on September 7 and the Rally of Wairarapa on October 5.

Records fall at winter champs Records tumbled over the weekend as 100 swimmers from the Top of the South contested the Swimming Nelson Marlborough Winter Champs held at the ASB Aquatic Centre. In an outstanding display of swimming, 10 year old Sarah-Kate Birkett from Nelson Swimming Club took out the award for overall best female swimmer, as well as the gold medal in the girls 10 years and under age group with an impressive 9 wins and 1 second place including two Nelson-Marlborough regional records for 50m fly and 100m fly. In the boys 10 years and under, Bendi Kepess from Nelson Club was a clear winner. The girls 11-12 years age group was a closely fought battle with the leaders changing several times over the weekend, but at the conclusion of the meet, Gabby Lovell of Waimea Club took out the honours winning the gold medal. The winner of the boys 11-12 years age group was Oliver Stark from Waimea Swim Club. With seven wins and one second place, Oliver also deservedly won the title of overall best male swimmer.

Natalie Stuart always wanted to make a splash on the international stage but she never imagined it would be in a boxing ring. The talented 22 year old was preparing for the national rowing trails when an injury forced her out of the trails and the sport. Naturally competitive, she cast her eyes towards a new sport but strapped on some boxing gloves to keep her fit in the meantime. It didn’t take long for those fitness sessions to turn into a new passion. “I really enjoyed it and almost straight away I started training for a fight.” Her coach Alan Dickey saw potential in the novice and in no time she racked up a 9-0 record. “My first fight I thought ‘what am I doing here? I can’t believe I’m actually doing it’ and I just bounced around as much as I could so I wouldn’t get hit.” Her first loss came at the hands of the Australian champion in her weight class. Her second loss to the New Zealand champion at nationals. Natalie says she doesn’t want a third and will head to this year’s nationals as the top ranked fighter in her class after the previous cham-

She says she isn’t expecting too much from her time in Europe, other than to learn. “I’ve had 13 fights and I’ll be facing girls with 200 fights so I’m not expecting much but it will be great experience and opportunity for me.” Natalie’s ultimate goal is to represent New Zealand at the 2016 Olympics. On the way she wants to win nationals this year. “I’m really driven to do well and I really enjoy the training. I don’t enjoy getting hit but I’ve got a great coach and my defence is pretty good.” Natalie says she needs to raise $5000 for the trip to Germany and Poland and any sponsorship would be grateful. Rival’s wing defence Jasmin Price had an outstanding opening quarter as she grabbed intercepts and used her extremely long reach to her advantage as she pressured the ball going into Waimea’s offensive third. The girls settled quickly into to their new positions to outscore Rival 6-5. Waimea should take it as they have several options through court with Gracie Roberts offering another shooting option.

There were plenty of complaints at the breaks at Saxton Courts on Saturday when players struggled with the unaccustomed sun and heat. The rumblings were wasted on supporters and yours truly as everyone relished a pleasant day. In the Grade 1 game Rival Cougars took the court, firing on all cylinders and were soon up 10-5 against Waimea College B. While Rival’s shooters Kelly Jenkins and Renee Bouzaid were confidence personified as they were supplied an abundance of quality ball from feeders Dana Weir and Lisa Thompson the college shooters appeared hesi-

Waimea Old Boys Rugby Club
www.wobrfc.co.nz
Aiming for treble Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys are just two wins away from sealing a famous treble for the Richmond club. With the Car Company division one and women’s trophies already locked away in the cabinet, the only remaining team is still firmly in the hunt to win a third. Waimea Old Boys will host Riwaka in one semi-final, with Murchison hosting Stoke in the other. Manager Brent Stewart says there had been plenty of friendly banter within the club, acknowledging what it would mean if Waimea can win the next two games. “There certainly is some internal banter in the club but no one is putting any more pressure on us than us,” says Brent. “We’re doing exactly what we wanted to do all year and the success of the other two
teams is a contributing factor but we’ve got high standards already.” Saturday’s game kicks off at 1:30pm at Jubilee Park and the team is hoping for a large crowd, while further down south they will also be cheering on Stoke, as a potential home final will be better than an away one. But standing in Stoke’s way are the defending champions Murchison and coach Mike Huxford says it would mean a lot for the town to hold another division two final. “It falls in our favour that we can get a home crowd. This is quite big for the community,” he says. “It’d be like last year, which is huge. It’s rarely seen in any competition that a team can take it out twice, and we’re in the running to have a shot at it.” The Murchison vs Stoke game will also be held at 1:30pm.

Plenty of antics at famous shield clash The visiting team has won the Kaka Shield yet again – but under an un-written rule, they always have to. Once played as a competitive rugby match between Tui and Sherry Valley in 1923, the most recent format of the Kaka Shield was contested on Sunday with the visiting Richmond side beating Tapawera 6-3. Two tries were scored by Richmond, which was made up of former and current Waimea Old Boys club members, meaning the “most valuable shield in New Zealand rugby” will be coming back to the Star & Garter. It also means Tapawera will have to travel Jubilee Park next year to contest it. Although the initial game was played under the 1923 rugby rules, Sunday’s game was nearly the opposite. The nine a-side fixture saw women and men play on the same field, gumboots and sneakPlayers from the Tapawera and Richmond Kaka Shield teams gather for a photo on full ers replaced rugby boots, drinks breaks included scooping a glass of beer from time. a stainless steel bucket sat next to a keg, and short line-outs were literally that, with players kneeling as the ball was thrown in. Missed out during the war years, the Kaka Shield has been contested every other year since its inception 1923. No one on the sideline seemed to know when the ‘new rules’ came into play, when Richmond and Tapawera took over from Tui and Sherry Valley or even why the game was even played. Ron Fenemor, a former Kaka Shield trustee, believed the social aspect occurred in the 70s, around the time of the 50th jubilee. While most people were short on details, he did know one thing. “It’s more valuable than the Ranfurly Shield,” he says, about the trophy which contains sovereigns, half sovereigns and nuggets of gold. $700 was raised for Tapawera JAB at the game.

Swim president the latest life member Stephen Fryer of Richmond was made a life member of Swimming Nelson Marlborough at the regional association’s 2013 Annual General Meeting recently, in recognition of his long service at club, regional and national level. Brent Cheyne, also of Richmond was recognised with an honours award for his service as SNM treasurer, past chair and board member for many years. Stephen is currently the SNM President and chair and also chairs the region’s technical committee that oversees all swimming referees
and other officials in the top of the south island. In accepting his award, Stephen says it was not just for him, but also for his late wife, Wendy, who encouraged him to get involved in officiating and was herself actively involved at poolside. He also announced that, with his daughter Alice, he was establishing, in honour of Wendy, an annual trophy for the region’s best “up and coming swimmer”. Both Stephen and Brent are members of the Nelson South Swimming Club.
A HELPING HAND: PGG Wrightson Murchison has rewarded the commitment shown by a combined country under9s rugby team by kitting them out with Pro Rugby hoodies for the rest of the winter sports season.
The team, made up of Murchison and Tapawera club players, meets up for training once a week, despite the logistics of travel from one area to the other, before playing games every Saturday in the Nelson Bays under-9 competition.
A Murchison Rugby Club spokesperson said the club was hugely appreciative of the generous gesture and says the commitment from the players in rarely seen in children so young. Photo: Barry Whitnall.
