Wild pig runs riot in CBD A wild pig ran amuck around Richmond yesterday, racing into a construction site and charging at workers before it was caught by police at Washbourn Gardens. Estimated to weigh around 30 kilograms, the wild pig was being followed down Oxford St before darting into a Coman Construction site. Foreman Kris Renwick says it came onto the property at about midday. “I turned around and there was a pig just standing there,” he says. “It must have been running down the footpath but it came on site and next minute it started having a go at one of the guys who had to jump over it.” Kris says the pig’s next move involved jumping over foundations, running at another worker who was holding a wheel barrow. From there it ran towards Washborne Gardens where it was eventually stopped in its tracks by members of the public and

police. John Bergman, a contracted animal controller for the Tasman District Council, confirmed the incident and says the pig was tied up and put in the back of his truck before being taken to the pound. “Reports were coming in from Richmond where people had been seeing it and then the police got involved at Washbourn Gardens,” he says. John also says there had been a citing in William St last week and it was realistic to believe it could be the same pig. He says it is common for hunters to keep hold of pigs until they are grown up, if the mother had been killed. If the pig is not claimed it would be sold at auction.

unseasonably mild winter with a lack of hard frosts hitting the area. She says lambs have been seen around the valley for a few weeks now and while it hasn’t been as cold as she would expect, it wasn’t unusual to see lambs arriving earlier there than anywhere else in the Wakefield area.
