Golfing dad Ron predicts son’s ace Simon Bloomberg Veteran golfer Ron Tasker has never had a holein-one but this month he experienced the next best thing, standing on the 18th tee and watching his son Regan ace the 17th just metres away. Ron was playing in a club day at Totaradale Golf Club on September 3 when he and his foursome of Gordy Thomas, Kevin Tippett and Ken Wilson finished teeing off on 18. Regan was about to hit off the 17th tee so Ron suggested they wait and watch his son’s

And not only did Regan unleash the perfect eight iron on the 122m par three, Ron jokingly predicted what would happen. “I said to the other guys ‘I’ll wait and watch Regan play his shot in case he gets a hole-in-one’,” Ron recalls. “It was a joke but then I said ‘seriously fellas, I think he’ll get a holein-one so you’d better watch’.” When the ball pitched about two metres from

He says the advertisement is a personal attack and that Max would be better off spending his time and money “focusing on the issues that are important to Tasman district residents”. Max says the advertisement is not a personal attack and is simply “a factual matter.” “It’s no personal attack. When you stand in the campaign trail you have to accept that people have got their positions and their viewpoints. “I don’t think there’s anything personal about it, I think it’s just a factual matter.”

Golfing dad predicts son’s ace FROM PAGE 1 the pin and spun to the right and rolled into the hole, the two foursomes erupted. “There was all this yelling and screaming - there were eight guys going nuts and I was the loudest,” Regan says. Ron was also ecstatic and dumfounded at the same time after watching his unlikely prediction come true. “I was getting high fives all round. It was unbelievable.” It was Regan’s second hole-inone after he aced the same hole in a Wanderers Cricket tournament about six years ago. However, Regan, who has a 10 handicap, says the latest ace was by far the best because “this time I’m a club member and got to shout my mate sand get my name on that board”. “I was telling everyone I saw

High-speed car chase ends with arrests
Smart work by an off-duty police officer in Richmond and cool driving by police officers during a high-speed car chase resulted in the arrest of a “high risk warrant” on Friday. Sergeant Greg Beer of the Nelson police says they have been on the hunt for the 23-year-old Nelson man for the last month after he allegedly “cut off his bracelet and fled his place of residence” while under home detention. Police arrested the man at around 3.50pm on Friday after the car he was in was cut off by a police car involved in a high-speed chase from
Richmond. The chase ended about three kilometres south of Hope on State Highway 6 when two police cars forced the man’s car off the road. “The car was slowing down and the police officer managed to get in front of him and cut him off. I think he might have been running out of petrol,” Greg says. Greg says the man was spotted by the off-duty police officer on Talbot St after he recognised his car. The officer called the duty officer but the man saw the police and fled and the pursuit followed. “Two police cars were involved
in the chase - a police car and a dog handler. I don’t know how fast the car was going - it was fast enough, it was a highspeed chase. “We arrested him - he is a high risk warrant,” Greg says. “We also arrested a female and she’s assisting with our investigations.” The man will face charges including fleeing police, breaching home detention, driving while disqualified, wilful damage, possessing a knife and possession of a methamphetamine pipe. The woman faces charges including aiding and abetting.

Harold also presented a medal to Ellen Urselmann of Motueka on behalf of her late father who had served in World War II. Maarten says the medal presentation brought back some fond, and not so fond, memories of his time in Indonesia. Although he spent most of his time looking after errant soldiers in Palembang in Sumatra, he also experienced combat when he was part of a
convoy that was attacked by Indonesian guerrillas. “I’ll never forget the sound of the bullets whistling over our heads. It was pretty scary, I am not a hero, but it was nothing compared to the fighting in other areas.” Although Maarten says the war became unpopular in Holland, many of the soldiers were drafted and “had no choice in the matter”. “It was very similar to Vietnam. We called it fighting for order and
peace and the Indonesians called it a freedom fight.” Now that Maarten has his medal, he wants to encourage other Dutch returned servicemen living in New Zealand to seek any recognition they deserve. “I have known one or two others who served in Indonesia who live here now and I wonder if they received their medals. At the time I wasn’t concerned about it but I think it’s nice to get official recognition for something like that.”

Aquatic and Fitness Centre tops awards Simon Bloomberg The Community Leisure Management awards held in Whangarei last week confirmed what most people in the Tasman district already knew - that the Richmond Aquatic and Fitness Centre is a great place to go. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Fitness Centre, Riverside in Nelson and the Nayland Pool. Last Friday, CLM held its annual awards and the Richmond centre “pretty much had a clean-sweep” winning four awards including the Facility of the Year. “We have an outstanding team and that’s the main reason we did so well,” Richmond centre manager Vaughan Hope says. “We also have good engagement with our community and are willing to try new things.” Richmond also won the Swim School of the Year, Aquatics Department of the Year and Café of the Year and Vaughan says that’s a real tribute to their staff. “Our swim school has always done extremely well but the big factor this time was the level they have reached with their school’s programme. They are delivering water safety and swimming lessons to most of the schools in the region which is a great achievement.” Although Vaughan says they are delighted to kg receive the awards, he says one of the biggest Fresh NZ Plain/ compliments they get is the number of people Crumbed Beef Schnitzel who keep using the facility. He says the pool and fitness centre attract around 22,000 to pack 28,000 paying users monthly with 4000 of those having lessons with the swim school each week.

New initiative to help dog owners have a stigma attached to them and that makes them hard to rehome.” Tasman district animal control officer John Bergman says Deb and Mike also make life a little happier for all the Richmond pound dogs when they take the dogs walking two or three times a week.
“They already do a great job walking our dogs and now this subsidised desexing is a very good idea,” John says. “I’d really like to see dog owners take up the offer - it could help prevent the problem before it starts.” Deb says the desexing will be carried out by Victory Vets in Nelson. She says the practice manager Brendan Hickman is “fully supportive” of the initiative and has given them a “fantastic rate” to help reduce the costs. As well as walking the pound dogs,

John says Deb and Mike get a lot of them vaccinated, desexed and chipped. They also produce videos of pound dogs and post them on YouTube to attract prospective new owners. Anyone who owns a bully, bullycross or brindle dog and wants to have them desexed can contact Deb on 0220803599 or go to the website toomanypuppies.co.nz and complete an application form to see if they are eligible for the subsidy.

It’s always heartbreaking when a homeless dog has to be put down and statistics show that it’s often large bully, bullycross or brindle breeds that are the innocent victims. That’s why a Nelson couple have decided to do their bit to reduce the problem by offering to subsidise the cost of desexing those breeds in a two month trial. Deb and Mike, who don’t want their surname published, are trialling a limited offer to have 30 dogs desexed for $25 before the end of next month to help reduce the number of unwanted puppies. “These large mixed breeds tend to have big litters which often means there’s too many puppies and dogs and not enough homes,” Deb says. “These are the dogs that die in shelters every day across New Zealand because there are too many of them and they are usually the hardest to rehome.” Deb and Mike have already helped save one bully-cross brindle dog from an unhappy end, adopting Jools after she spent four months in the Richmond pound waiting to be
rehomed. Deb says Jools epitomises the problem because, although she is a loving, wellbehaved dog, prospective dog owners are often wary of bully breeds. “Jools is a lovely dog but no one would take her so we did,” Deb says. “It doesn’t matter how nice they are, these breeds

Assistance dog to help boy Jessie Johnston Every day life for Anna and Shon Costello isn’t easy as their son Blake, 4, has severe autism. However, the help of an assistance dog could make all the difference to the Richmond family. Blake’s severe form of autism means he is both non verbal and will run away if given the chance. Having no sense of danger means when the family do go out, Blake has to be retrained in an oversized buggy to make sure he doesn’t run out on to the road. “He’s just so strong and he’ll just take off, people comment and judge that he’s too big for the buggy or he’s lazy, they don’t actually know us, they don’t know our background,” says Anna. “I think I ended up walking through the mall one day in tears because everyone was staring and judging, it just gets really old. “A grandmother of a boy in our other son Logan’s class looked at me and laughed and said ‘he’s too big for that buggy’, and I said ‘well he’s non-verbal autistic with no sense of danger, how the hell am I meant to keep him safe’, and she just said ‘well get something bigger’,” says Anna. The family applied for an assis-

Assistance dogs are trained specifically for the people they will be matched with, including those suffering from diabetes or epilepsy. In Blake’s situation, both he and the dog would be harnessed to-
gether, while Anna or Shon have the dog on a lead. The dog will be trained to deal with Blake’s meltdowns and should Blake try to run away, the dog will sit down and act as an anchor. Assistance dogs are bred, raised and trained in Hamilton. They are put with foster families when they can leave their mother and once they turn one, start their six to eight months of vigorous training. The family had a trial with Assistance Dogs New Zealand dog

Amber, which included a family walk around Washbourn Gardens, through Kmart and to McDonalds for an ice cream. It was the furthest Blake had walked before and Anna says normally it would never have happened. “If he doesn’t want to go with you he’ll just drop down and that’s it.” “Usually in Kmart he’d try and shelter himself, put his head down, hands over his head and that sort of thing, but he was actually more aware of his surrounding with the dog and he was a lot
more manageable,” says Shon. “It just gave us an insight into what a normal family life could be, because we don’t really tend to go out much or do a lot because it’s hard work,” says Anna. While the dog costs $48,000 to breed, raise and train, Anna and Shon have to contribute $20,000 of that. “Initially when I looked on the website I thought “this is awesome”, but then I thought shit, $20,000 is a lot of money, but I’m kind of prepared to do whatever it takes so that we can have a normal life and give Blake the freedom that he deserves,” says Anna. “During the trial he was just able to be a kid and have that freedom, he was able to walk around and touch things and observe things from different angles instead of just being stuck in a buggy.” The family is still around 18 months away from receiving a dog, although a two year old dog has become available and the family’s fingers are crossed that they will be able to take it home. The family has set up a Give a Little page to help raise the necessary funds, so anyone who would like to help the Costello’s can donate at givealittle.co.nz/cause/ anassistancezdogforblake, or visit their Facebook page.

'Magical' Kellys Bush opens to public for a day Kate Russell A “magical” piece of bush tucked behind Nelson city will be open to the public this weekend as part of Conservation Week. Kellys Bush is an area of 5.7 hectares at Enner Glynn, and a 30 year bush restoration project there earned owner Lindy Kelly and her family recognition at the Eelco Boswijk awards last month. The bush encompasses a rare 2.5 hectare piece of original lowland forest, which has been described by Nelson City Council as an ‘area of special significance’ and ‘locally uncommon’, due to its proximity to Nelson city and its richness in Tawa and Matai. It is home to trees from pre-European times, native birds, rare and endangered species of fungi, giant native earthworms and the giant carnivorous snail, powelliphanta. A successful open day last November attracted over 200 people, and Lindy wants to hold another open day since they can’t open the bush to the public all the time. Many schools, kindergartens and community groups have been involved with the restoration work
over the years, which provides a great opportunity for people to learn more about the native bush, and Lindy hopes to keep that going. She says that walking trails, picnic areas, bridges and a shade house for school children to grow native trees, all help to make the forest a ‘place of active learning.’ "We love having school and kindergarten groups up here and they are always welcome to arrange visits. We want to make it a place of recreation and education – it’s about engaging children in nature and enjoying the bush," she says. "This is a magical place and we want to share it with people." Lindy says her grandchildren also love to help out, and her 12 year old grandson recently spent the whole day helping her plant trees in the rain. She says they are always looking for new volunteers to help with planting and clearing weeds, and they are also in the process of putting a QEII covenant over the bush. Kellys Bush will be open to the public this Sunday, 18 September, from 1-4pm, rain or shine. The address is 100 Enner Glynn Rd and no dogs, please.

False alarm raiser ‘I felt really silly’ Brittany Spencer We know to call police if we see a crime, fire service if there is a blaze, the ambulance if someone needs medical attention, but who do you call for an emergency on the water? That’s the scenario that faced Nelson woman Cass Esposito last Tuesday when she saw a kite floating in the water but no kite surfer, while driving along Rocks Rd. Pulling over, Cass watched for movement and after not locating the kite surfer for 10 minutes, she made the decision to act. But she had no idea who to call. “I was worried that maybe someone had come down and cracked their head or was in serious trouble. But I had no idea how to get help,” says Cass. “I Googled the Nelson Coast Guard and saw on their website that I had to call the police.” Cass called and around 20 minutes later, two police units, a helicopter, and an ambulance were on scene, trying to sight the person whose

kite was floating between Fifeshire Rock and the buoys. “When it’s on the water and you’re looking from the road or the beach, there are so many things that you just don’t know and won’t until someone is with the person,” says Cass. “I kept being asked if I thought the person needed medical attention, but I couldn’t even see him. As an observing member of the public you feel pretty stupid and helpless in that situation.” When the Harbourmaster’s boat was in sight the kitesurfer was sighted, they got
up and continued to kite surf. “I felt really silly and said to the policeman, ‘that was an expensive false alarm’, but he said I did the right thing and I figure it’s better to make a fool of yourself than read in the paper the next day that somebody had died.” After the incident, Cass says everyone needs to know who to call for help when there’s an incident on the water. Nelson Harbourmaster Dave Duncan says people shouldn’t hesitate to report dangerous situations on the water and that Cass did the right thing.

“Call 111 straight away and ask for police, search and rescue operations should always be directed to police” says Dave. “Report the incident, stay in the same place, talk to police, keep a vigil eye and, if the person is okay, just ring 111 again and say it’s all good now.” Dave also says people who report things should not feel silly if the situation is not as it initially appears. “We all care and the cost is not a problem, we’d always sooner go than not, and if I was in trouble it’s nice to know people care and would ring.”

Gondola gets NCC grant: Nelson ratepayers will be heavily impacted if the Gondola continues to be funded from our money. It cost Queenstown over $60 million to get its Gondola underway. Mass poison dropping is not the most awesome thing, but it is the best option we have right now. Personally I value our snails and birds way more than the possums, rats and stoats and I am pleased to hear this is happening. Jenn E Fer. Research from TB Free NZ shows that ‘snails can take up 1080 from the soil at significant levels’ and there are numerous reports from. The public of dead native birds and livestock and I have witnessed fantail feeding on aerially dropped 1080 pellets as well as seeing similar videos online of other bird species feeding on it. There is a financial value on possum fur add a small subsidy to that value and there will be possum trapping contractors
everywhere. We will never eradicate rats and mice and $3.5 billion has been spent on the 1080 purge since it’s onslaught began. More money should go into research so we can be very specific on the target pest. Periodically placed predator proof fences would create breeding havens and tourist attractions. Cailan Gibson. 4 MAYOR TASMAN
Focus - Fresh Approach - Community Involvement
Important notIce Did you know that Mayoral candidate, Kit Maling, potentially has major conflicts of interest regarding the dam? He is the Chairman of Waimea East Irrigators – the group which will benefit most from the dam. They are the largest irrigator and the only group which draws water directly from the river. Every year this is a major factor in the perceived water shortage for the rest of Richmond. Water from the proposed dam will not be piped for domestic use. 90% will flow directly out to sea. Mr Maling is also a Director of Waimea Community Dam. It is not a dam for the community – it is a dam for the irrigators. We need to implement the plan for the Clover Road reservoir and weirs as well as introduce a Council backed scheme for household rainwater collection tanks.
AT V’s & QUADs
The reservoir and weir system will be “user pays”. The irrigators – not the rest of the ratepayers - will pay for what they use. RATES WILL RISE SIGNIFICANTLY IF THIS DAM IS BUILT.

Dana Wensley is more than qualified to become one of the councillors representing your interests and is keen to bring her fresh, constructive voice to the Tasman District Council. Born and raised in Motueka, Dana now works, lives, volunteers and raises her family in Richmond. “I am passionate about bringing a change in culture to council. I know this area well, its concerns and the communities that live here,” says Dana. When it comes to local politics, Dana brings a strong background in law and policy, gaining a law degree from the University of Auckland and a PhD in Medical Law and Ethics from King’s College in London. Dana has a significant track record in governance and board experience, currently serving on the Hospital Advisory Committee (NMDHB) as well as being appointed by the Minister of Health to the National Ethics Advisory Committee (expertise law). It’s Dana’s belief that transparency is key for democracy and she has a clear vision for council. “I want to put Tasman back on track with transparent decision-making. TDC should stop wasting its money and use it where it is needed the most,” says Dana. “Local
government has become more complex in the last 10 years. Tasman needs to elect a council that understands law, policy and politics, skills that I can bring to the table.” She is also passionate about mending the relationship between council and the public after witnessing an “alarming disconnect with the community.” “The result has been significant cost overruns and a community that feels they are not listened to,” says Dana. Rapid growth is also a primary concern for Tasman requiring creative, connected thinking that supports infrastructure and services that meet the communities developing needs. “Richmond’s continued growth is a challenge for council with projected population numbers 190 per cent above those anticipated. Yet council is flagging on infrastructure and policy around Tasman’s changing demographic. TDC’s Positive Aging Strategy is 12 years out of date and overdue for a review,” says Dana. If you would like to find out more about Dana and her vision for Tasman, visit tasmanissues.net, or email danawensley@ xtra.co.nz.

Single parents pampered for a day
PAMPER DAY: Richmond mums who were treated to a pamper day on Saturday are from left; Astra Perks with son Liam Perks-Richards, Heather Palmer with 14 month old son, Jayden James and Marie Hill with son Ashton Hill. Photo: Brittany Spencer.
Brittany Spencer Single parents from across the region were invited to the Richmond School Hall on Saturday as part of Love in Action’s Single Parent Pamper Day. Run by the Richmond Waimea Ministers Association, a dozen of the region’s churches came together to treat solo parents and their families. Organising committee volunteer Ange Harris says they had around 80 solo parents in the Richmond School Hall throughout the day. “We’ve had mainly women with littlies, some that have been solo mums for 10-15 years and have just come to enjoy a bit of me time.” Ange says everyone enjoyed the chance to tick things like vehicle checks, physio and health nurse appointments off their to do lists while also being pampered with cosmetics, hair cuts, manicures and photos. “People are very overwhelmed and thankful and thats what we wanted to do today, we just wanted to bless people.” Richmond’s Heather Palmer is the single parent of a very cute 14 month old son, Jayden James and says she enjoyed the day immensely. “A day like today is pretty awesome, being a single mum you just don’t have time to do things for yourself so its been great getting a bit of attention and being pampered and everything is free which is really nice.” Single Richmond mum Astra Perks says one of the best parts of the day was the professional photos with her son Liam. “It is my first actual family photo with him so this is just incredible, I’ll be able to take that away with me today and they are doing my hair and make up for it before hand which is also really nice.” If you need more info, contact Ange Harris - she is the Richmond School receptionist.

Time to help the helpers
Simon Bloomberg
The Nelson Hospital Chaplaincy service provides comfort and encouragement to thousands of patients and their families, and even to hospital staff, each year and now it’s their turn to ask for help. It’s Hospital Chaplaincy Week next week and the Nelson Hospital Chaplaincy is holding a fundraising stall to help maintain the invaluable services provided by its dedicated volunteers. Hospital chaplaincies around the country get half their funding from the government but the remainder comes from donations and fun-
draisers and Nelson Ecumenical chaplain Yvonne McLean is asking for the community’s support. Yvonne says the service, which is a nondenominational, plays a key role in helping patients in Nelson Hospital. She says their 18 voluntary chaplaincy assistants spend around 300 hours completing 800 visits each month as they endeavour to get around each ward twice a week. “We are not religious,” Yvonne says. “We are here for all faiths and no faiths - we are here for everybody. “We don’t ask if people are religious and everything is strictly confidential. If someone asks for
a chaplain of a particular denomination we arrange that but often people just want to talk to someone and we are there to listen.” Volunteer chaplaincy assistant, Annie Brown, who is also the service’s fundraising coordinator says “it’s a privilege” being able to help the patients and their families although she concedes that it can be emotionally tough. “It can be difficult at times but it’s a calling - it’s a privilege,” Annie says. Yvonne agrees, saying the chaplaincy assistants wouldn’t be able to do their job if they didn’t feel empathy and “didn’t let the pa-
tients touch their hearts”. However, Yvonne says the volunteers are well-trained and are required to undergo a debriefing after visiting the wards to make sure there aren’t any issues. The chaplaincy assistants also offer support to patients who are about to have surgery and look after the chapel which is located on the second-level near the cafe. The service can also arrange visits from Catholic priest Father Bill Warwick and Maori chaplain Andy Joseph who is also the hospital’s kaumutua. Yvonne says they get great support from Nelson Hospital which
“recognises the importance of the spiritual aspects of health”. They are also supported by the region’s churches as well as the Interchurch Council for Hospital Chaplaincy. The Nelson Hospital Chaplaincy fundraising stall is being held on level two of the hospital from September 19 to 23. Anyone who would like to donate new goods and baking to the stall can email Annie at annie.brown@nmdhb. govt.nz People can also make financial donations anytime by visiting the website ichc.org.nz and specifying Nelson.

RICHARD KEMPTHORNE Mayor, Tasman
I have been a successful and effective leader of our Council team in delivering:
reduced debt low rates increases new community infrastructure 1.
Strong team leadership
My leadership of the Council team has proven to be inclusive, decisive and effective. I have led the Council in reducing our debt level, keeping rates increases to a minimum and ensuring all residents and ratepayers have input into the key issues that affect them. I provided strong leadership in our community in the face of damage caused by adverse weather events across the District. I have made sure core services have kept abreast of District growth enhancing community wellbeing through the development of a number of community facilities.
6.
Tasman District has experienced high population growth in recent years. This has required significant ongoing development to our stormwater system, sewerage reticulation, water supply and roading network. I am pleased to have led Council in delivering these essential services in a cost effective manner. These core services attract new people and businesses to our District.
I have enjoyed partnering with the community to provide sports facilities, community hubs and the Tasman Great Taste Trail.
7. 2.
Reduce reliance on debt
Under my leadership, we have reduced our reliance on debt over the last term. Council’s finance team have indicated by the end of this financial year we expect to have $30 million less debt than predicted. By maintaining and managing our current infrastructure well I will ensure the reducing trend continues, freeing us up for the future.
3.
Water supply
Ensuring safe and secure water supply for our current and future residents and businesses is important for the entire Tasman District. For the Waimea Plains we need to establish a fair and equitable funding model. I will continue to listen and work with the whole community for an acceptable outcome.
5.
Environmental management
People need to be able to swim in our rivers when they want to and Council needs to give confidence by monitoring our water quality. I will ensure that Council works with our community to manage land and water well, supporting our Freshwater and Land Advisory Groups in the Takaka and Waimea Basins. I will protect and enhance our environment while supporting sustainable growth for our industries. We need to leave our environment in an improved state for our children and grandchildren.
Keep rates increases low
With less reliance on debt and focussing on all areas of council spending we have been successful in keeping rates increases as low as possible. Our average rates increase over the last three years has been 2.5% per year. This year’s rates increase is just under 1%. We have achieved this while facing costly weather events, keeping core services in line with District population growth and continued to develop required community facilities. As Mayor I will continue this prudent financial management.
4.
Community and services
Emergency weather events
Over recent years we have had a number of major adverse weather events which have resulted in serious damage to roads, property and core services. These events have required wise use of Tasman District resources to repair the damage and minimise disruption to our community. I am proud of the way we have worked together as a team and risen to the challenge for a quick and effective outcome. Authorised by Richard Kempthorne, 11 Hillplough Heights Richmond

He’s involved in the Nelson Tasman Business Trust, Energy Trust of New Zealand and the Tasman Environment Trust. Trevor also continues to chair Waimea Village which he says has been “an extremely satisfying job.” Just after Trevor retired from his career in the hire industry, his brother unfortunately passed away and the plumbing company was sold, although still retaining the family name. While many of his committee positions have been through interest or contacts, there have also been those that have just fallen into his lap, in particular, his time chairing the Moetapu Community Association. At the time there was a dispute over people trying to set up a boat hire business, those opposing it claiming it would be disruptive. The AGM of the association was held while Trevor was in the area, “and I attended having been told by Ann to keep my mouth zipped. When she asked me later how it went, I had to confess that, to my surprise, I was now the chairman – a position I held for six years and found both fun and interesting,” says Trevor. Now standing for council, Trevor maintains his desire to remain busy as well as contribute to the district.

Many will know the Tuffnell name through Tuffnell Plumbing, started by Trevor’s family back in 1915. Trevor completed an apprenticeship there, marrying his wife Ann just as he came out of it at the age of 21. “We went away on honeymoon but when we came back we were greeted at the airport by my mother who told me that my father was unwell. So from that point on I was into management,” says Trevor. “There was no training, I had no experience, so it was a quick learning curve and I took the company from being a relatively small plumbing business, basically doing housing, and shifted
it to a bigger company doing industrial and commercial work. “There was always someone coming in to borrow equipment, so we had lots of bits of paper noting these tacked to the workshop wall. One day I looked at it and thought why are we lending stuff, why don’t we set up a hire company, so that’s how Tuffnell Hire came into existence.” When the hire business got too big, Trevor sold it to the national company Hirequip and began working for them, first as an area manager and then as a project manager. He became president of the New Zealand Hire Industry Association and was one of only six people ever to have been made a life member. To win, entrants have to send a photo of themselves with their best friend and tell us what makes their friendship special. Born only a day apart, our first winners, Paris Eyles Clements and Ruby Stephens, have been together since they were born. With their mums in neighbouring rooms of the maternity ward, cousins Ruby and Paris spent many of their first days together, and 10 years later remain inseparable. “When Ruby was born, Paris came into the birthing suite with Nerolie within half an hour of me having her,” says Ruby’s mum, Megan Stephens. Now, they build huts, share birthday parties, have lots of sleep-overs, do girl guides and go on holiday to D’Urville Island together. Ruby says the pair wish they were twins. “We do everything together, whatever Paris is doing, I am

After taking to the salt flats for just their second year, the team behind Project '64 returned home from the Bonneville Speed Week in Utah having broken two land speed records. The team of eight was founded by Garry Orton and Guy Griffith who own and operate Victory Automotive, a local automotive business based at the World of Wearable Art and Classic Car Museum. The pair have a long history in motor racing with Bonneville Speed Week being one of many events on their bucket list. Having been in the industry for years, they knew all the right people who could help bring the project to life, including Bryan and Nelson Hartley of Hartley Engines and Motorsport in Palmerston North who designed and built the engines. Larry Mulholland from Swift Automotive in Christchurch was the man behind the gear box and Gary Grant from AllTrax was called in to do the body rebuild and roll cage construction. Starting in 2010, Project 64 took the shape of a 1964 Mini Cooper S that was well beyond repair. It’s now a proven speed machine, first taking to the Salt Flats in 2012 where it broke one land speed record. The team was racing in the I/ BGCC category, and for those who don’t know what that means, I stands for an engine size under 1000cc, B means it is either turbo or super-charged, G means it runs on petrol and CC stands for competition coupe. Bonneville Speed Week encompasses a huge number of categories, including small engine vehicles like the Project '64 Mini, all the way through to fully customised vehicles in the streamliner class. A steep learning curve led to the team damaging both their motors during
their attempt in 2012, and having to build a third motor from what was left before claiming the I/BGCC land speed record. The team that had set the previous record was the Hudson Boys, regarded as the kings of small engine racing at Bonneville, who had around 50 records at one point. “They’re a really nice bunch of people, which is another great thing about Bonneville,” says Project 64 member, Mike Wilson. “When they found out in 2012 that we’d broken their record, they were super happy for us.” They even helped the Project 64 team out this year, suggesting a
has run since 1949, it’s been over 100 years since the first record was set on the salt flats. The 2014 cancellation ended up being a blessing in disguise, allowing a new company to come on board whose “crank shaft design was amazing and really helped with the engine rebuild,”

In 2013, Project '64 had decided not to attend the event, then in 2014, having planned to return to break some new records, they were forced to cancel after problems with the construction of their crank shaft. A few weeks later, Bonneville itself was cancelled due to heavy rain. The weather was so bad from then on that by 2015 the quality of the salt hadn’t recovered and it was thought for a time that it might never run again. While Bonneville Speed Week
says Mike. “These new engines went from 284hp on petrol to 330hp (370hp on methanol), which is a massive jump on a motor that would originally have had about 60hp.” This year, their first record was set during tuning runs in the I/BGALT class, where the mini smashed the 133.896mph (215.485kph) record with a speed of 144.033mph (231.799kph). After switching classes to I/BFALT, a change from petrol to methanol, the team ended up getting the record in this category too, with a speed of 156.006mph

It was in the I/ FCC class that the little Mini nce again blitzed the qualifyng run, reaching an incredible 66.046mph (267.225kph), but fter a week of racing, a part ilure on the second run meant he car lost oil pressure and only eached 144mph before having o pull off the track. Their success has also got them some international recognition, including an invitation to appear on Jay Lenos Garage, a web show run by the American comedian. The show started off focusing on his personal collection, featuring over 100 cars, and now includes segments with guests and their cars. While the skill and determination of those in the Project 64 team are certainly a major part of their success at Bonneville Speed Week, they wouldn't have made it without the support of a number of generous sponsors, and so the team wishes to thank all of those who were involved behind the scenes. Project 64 is looking to return to Bonneville Speed Week in the future and is currently in the position of talking with people interested in their project. “It’s a bit up in the air, we would love to go back,” says Mike. “We are hatching plans and talking to someone about it, but we can’t really say a lot. Retirement – we look forward to the positives like “Yeehaa, I’ve got a gold card!” Yet some aspects of retirement we don’t want to think about. The saying, ‘a time will come and the wisest of us knows not how soon, when death, the great leveller of all human life will reduce us to the same state,” becomes something that we will have to face. Getting one’s ‘house in order’ becomes a priority. Part of that organising is to have your final farewell prepared so that those left behind do not have to worry about anything. Organising a no obligation, no cost pre-arranged funeral plan is easy with Anisy’s Tasman Funeral Home. They can help you sort out what you would like and make a record so it is there for your family in the future, even if you move out of the area, letting you sit back and enjoy your retirement. Challenge’s identity is based on being different to the status quo. In 1998, independent service stations were not getting a decent say in decisions that affected their own businesses. Challenge

Whether your retirement years are creeping up quickly or seem too far away to worry about, it’s important to start making financial plans, a task Nelson Budget Service can help with. Those in retirement receive two main forms of income, money from their personal savings and money from New Zealand Superannuation payments. However, 40 per cent of over 65 year olds rely on superannuation alone, which is often not enough to cover rent costs. Nelson Budget Service reminds people that it’s never too late to start and whatever your financial goals are, you are much more likely to achieve them when you have a plan for your money. The team offers free, confidential one-on-one advice, financial literacy education as well as a number of Sorted seminar workshops, including one on retirement planning. While it’s never too late to start, earlier is always better so give Nelson Budget Service a call today.

The Lantern Pampering provided For the second year running, the combined churches of Richmond and Waimea are running a project called Love in Action. Organiser Alex Johnston has seen the project spread over a range of activities and for a longer time frame than the one day event planned for last year. On Saturday 10 September a Parent’s Pamper Day was held at Richmond School Hall. The Love in Action team recognised that parenting alone can be tough and wanted to give an opportunity for these parents to be cared for rather being the carers. The list of services supplied included; a photographer, beautician, hair dresser, colour expert, manicurist and a health nurse. Even vehicles were cared for with a car wash and mechanical check. In addition
vouchers were supplied for visits to dentist, eye specialist, and other health services. Parenting and relationship ideas were offered as was good food and child care while all of this was happening. Lots of learning happened in a relaxing and enjoyable environment. Saturday 17 September will see more practical work being done. Salisbury School and Ma’s Place in Richmond will both get spruced up gardens as a team from several different churches work together. Soup, casseroles and apples will also be cooked for St Vincent de Paul to distribute to those who need them. Contact the church office, 544 8844 if you want to assist. The Love in Action team are all about churches working together to bless the community we all call home. Thanks so much to Alex and all who assisted.

Finding God Imagine a little girl out in the garden in a plastic chair, watching for shooting stars. That girl is me. After a hard day I found myself wondering whether there actually was a God. So I asked the night sky, “Is there a God?” I was almost hoping for the most amazing shooting star ever. Nothing happened and I started to cry. Was I alone? Was there no after-life? It was hard to imagine my whole belief was nothing. Then through a flood of tears I said, “Please let there be a God.” I looked up at the sky willing there to be something, anything. I was worried that people I loved who had gone, I would never see again. But I was amazed to find that in the tiny patch of sky I could see there was a shooting star. This is proof for me that I am not alone that out there somewhere is a power looking after me. God. Lucy Summerfield, church member (age 11)

Just a thought... How are you? Really, how are you? I really want to know. How many times a day are you asked a question like that but in reality the person is not even interested? There was sugar paste everywhere at the Richmond Library on Saturday as it hosted Have a Go at Cake Decorating Day with the Nelson Cake Decorators and Sugar Artists. Over 50 people drifted in and out, learning how to make different flowers, penguins and halloween pumpkins with rabbits bursting out. Nelson Cake Decorators and Sugar Artist, Maureen Grage says the day was an absolute success. “We’ve had so many people coming through and making beautiful decorations, there was a line waiting for us as we were setting up even.”

Why am I standing for council?
I am standing for council because I believe that my business experience, coupled with two previous terms as a councillor, will give balance to the council table. This, with my project management, Board and Trustee skills, will help the Tasman District through the changing climate and technology changes ahead.
The one item on my wish list
I am not a one issue candidate, however there is a need to have a complete review of all the council’s activities; are they fit for purpose or are they nostalgic? Are the right business models in place for the council’s non-core activities? As we move forward into climate change, robotics (e.g. driverless vehicles), internet retailing, solar energy, and the need for high density housing, we need some clear thinking in establishing the council’s future strategic planning.

The 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme will be commemorated at Founders Heritage Park this week. This Thursday 15 September marks the centenary of the World War I battle at Longueval, which was one of New Zealand’s ‘darkest days’ in military history in terms of loss of life. The battle was New Zealand's first major engagement on the Western Front and took a huge toll on the 15,000 members

The Mike Pero Nelson Giants have signed three-time NBL champion Dion Prewstwr for the 2017 season. The franchise has also announced the re-signings of local players Bronson Beri and Ali Granger. Nelson Giants legend, Phill Jones, who is helping facilitate player negotiations while head coach Tim Fanning is in America, has indicated he has called time on his career after more than 400 NBL games and 22 seasons in the league, after debuting in 1993. Phill says the signings of Ali and Bronson were “the backbone of the team”. The
Nelson cyclist George Bennett continued his breakthrough year on the world pro-cycling tour with a typically gritty top 10 finish in the Vuelta a Espana, that ended after three gruelling weeks in Madrid on Monday. It was a great result for the LottoNLJumbo rider who became the first New Zealander to finish in the top ten in a Grand Tour. That result followed a seventh at the Tour of California, 14th at the Criterium du Dauphine and seventh on a stage at the Tour de France as well as racing at the Rio Olympics. But George’s success hasn’t come overnight. I know this because I’m George’s neighbour in Aniseed Valley and I have witnessed the skinny little kid from down the road learn a few (hard) lessons on the road to his success. So here’s a few of those lessons. Good nutrition is important for top athletes: The last time I raced against George was in the 106km Rainbow Rage in 2006 and I smashed him. Ok, so he was only 15 but I still smashed him. I was feeling pretty good about retaining my ranking as the No1 cyclist in Aniseed Valley until I found out that George only had two Weet-Bix for breakfast before the race and I only passed him when he hit the wall after 30km. Even a banana would have helped. It’s essential to stay on your bike: In his early days, George was always falling off. It became a bit of a joke in the Valley and we sometimes referred to him as Crash Bennett. The last time George

George Bennett recorded his best result when he finished 10th in the Vuelta a Espana this week. came out with the old codgers I ride with we all suffered big time trying to be heroes and keep up with him on the climb. But we had the last laugh when we took him down a cool new single track and he crashed into a tree. I’d also like to mention that the second last time I raced George, I also beat him. He flew past me in a downhill mountainbike race on Goat Hill yelling ‘get out of the road Simon’ - a minute later I rode past him as he lay on the ground groaning. Don’t do drugs and alcohol: When George was 14, he used to sneak down to our place and drink home brewed beer in the woolshed with one of my sons (yes, George and Jeremy, I knew
what was going on). Then he’d stagger off home feeling crook as dog and have a splitting headache at school the next day. The beer was nasty stuff apparently. The last time George came around for a barbecue, I offered him a beer. He politely declined saying he had a big training ride tomorrow. No pain, no gain: All top cyclists train hard. They have to, but George has an unfair advantage when he trains because every time he leaves the Aniseed Valley on his bike he has to ride back over that damn hill. I have seen him riding up that hill after a 200km training ride looking like death. It’s a painful way to finish any ride, but it’s a good kind of pain. It pays to have good genes: This is not really a lesson but just an observation. Two of George’s biggest attributes as a rider are his determination and his skinny build and he gets those attributes from his parents Paul and Marina. I’m often mountainbiking way up in the hills and come across Marina running. She runs for miles. She plods away and never stops. She is a very determined lady who last year ran her first marathon in such a good time she qualified for the New York Marathon. Paul is also determined. You have to be to be a primary school teacher for 40 years. And yes, both of them are skinny. So those are just a few of the lessons I have seen George learn over the years and that have helped shape him into the outstanding young rider (and individual) he is today. I just wish I’d get around to learning a few of those lessons as well.

Malone adds a gold to his silver Jacob Page Nelson blade runner Liam Malone has struck gold at the Rio Paralympics 200m event in world record time on Tuesday morning. The 22-year-old won the final in a time of 21.06 seconds to beat Oscar Pistorious’ previous best in that event. The result backs up Liam’s silver medal in the 100m and puts him in a prime position with his preferred 400m event still to come. Liam was born with fibular hemimelia, in which part or all of the fibular bone is missing and had both legs amputated below the knee
at 18-months-old. In 2013 he took up running after New Zealanders helped to pay for his blades. He has been improving rapidly ever since. Speaking after his silver medal-winning race on Saturday, Liam said standing on the podium was a special moment. “Today was a super special day for me as it is my Mum’s birthday. She passed away four years ago and I know she would be so proud. My mates were in the stand and it is really special to have them here to support me. Liam will be going for another gold medal in the 400m race early on Friday.

Suzanne Spencer says that, with over 70 kids coming to their courts, the day was beyond her expectations. “I was just talking to the kids from Nayland Primary and they were all saying, ‘I want to start tennis, I want to start tennis’ so we’ve definitely got them excited and keen to play.”

Simon Bloomberg Some of the country’s top orienteering teams and adventure racers set news standards in the Wily Weka Challenge around St Arnaud on Sunday while over 30 three-women teams used the popular rogaine as a final hit-out before the Spring Challenge. The Nelson Orienteering Club’s event featured 503 competitors racing in teams for either three or six hours to find controls marked on a map. Controls were allocated points and the team with the most points won – teams returning after the cut-off time lost points for every minute they were late. Canterbury’s internationally ranked racers Tane Campbell and Nick Hann were the best men’s team winning the foot section with a nearperfect 5400 points. The women’s foot category was won by world rogaine champions Georgia Whitla and Lara Prince with 4820 points

I didn’t think they were that quick. They only missed one control and there was a bit of debate about that - they came in 10 minutes early too. “There were some good results for the locals as well. Anyone who did a good job with their navigation and had a good knowledge of the lake

did well.” Nelson’s John Hart and Gerard Malcolm were fastest in the men’s foot and mountainbike section with 5270 points while Jane Martin, Jane Orbell and Lynley Coventry teamed up to win the Spring Challenge category with 3960 points. Riley Croxford and Zefa Fa’avae won the junior boys threehour race with 2630 points with Jess Alloway, Charlotte Tucker and Hannah Martin winning the junior girls with 1790 points. Gordon says he was especially pleased to see a large number of young competitors and families entered in the event. The Spring Challenge category was also popular with over 30 all-women teams preparing for the Spring Challenge in Golden Bay on September 24. Gordon says the decision to move the event from Nelson to St Arnaud this year also proved popular. “It was a punt going to St Arnaud but it paid off.”

As a business owner, you need good advertising. You need a great “vehicle” to get your message out. Fortunately, right on your doorstep, you have three locally owned and operated newspapers. And we are the only ones who are. That means you deal with locals. People who genuinely care about getting you results. Our staff have
the highest level of ethics, passion and honesty. If it’s no good, we will tell you. And after 10 years we have it right. Our marketing team is one of the best in the country, let alone locally. When you’ve got something to tell your customers, or want to get a new idea going, give us a call. The biggest circulation, the highest number of pages, means
the locals come to us for their news. We are called the Independents. The only newspaper group that is 100% locally owned, staffed and put together, right here in Tasman.
