Big dry expected to cause hurt Simon Bloomberg

Fire fighters and farmers are facing a long, hot summer with the Waimea Rural Fire Authority ramping up its state of readiness after a series of fires including one sparked by a tracer bullet hitting a piece of metal near Hira. The fire danger has escalated after a long spell of dry, windy weather and the authority’s principal fire officer Ian Reade expects

things to get worse with the El Nino weather pattern predicted to result in one of the driest summers on record. “It’s the wind and the low humidity that is the main issue because that dries out Ian Reade. all the fine vegetation and that’s often where the ignition starts,” Ian says. “It’s an early start to the fire season

and if we don’t get significant rain before the end of the year it will get very serious.” Ian says they have already had a number of vegetation fires but fortunately they “didn’t get away”. The fire ignited by a the bullet on Mt Duppa only burned three-quarters of a hectare of scrub and pines thanks to “a good save by the Hira Volunteer Rural Fire Force and Nelson Fire Brigade”. Fires have also been caused by permitted burn offs getting out of control and ashes

from household fires igniting vegetation there have also been cases of extinguished fires reigniting. Ian warned home owners to take extra precautions with ashes after a fire started by dumped ashes “took out a garden shed in Golden Bay”. “It’s still been a bit cool at nights in some places and people are still having fires but it’s also really dry so everyone needs to

Photo comp to get ‘every aspect’ of Rabbit Island Kate Russell Nelson residents are being invited to bring forward their best photos of Rabbit Island for a new calendar that will “capture every aspect” of one of the region’s most popular spots. Ali Slotemaker, from Rabbit Island Coffee Co, is behind the idea, and is encouraging Nelsonians to get creative and help create a ‘tribute’ to the island. The best 12 images will be published in a ‘bespoke’ calendar for 2016. “It won’t be your typical touristy calendar,” she says. “It will be really beautiful and elegant. Rabbit Island is such a spectacular resource and we wanted to get that in print.” Ali says they have quite a few entries already, especially of the beach and summer months. She says they’d like to get more photos that capture the winter months too. “We’re looking for a whole range of photos, including the Hunter Brown Reserve, Rough Island and the estuary - people who walk dogs, ride horses and the bike riders,” she says. Farmers are also watching the weather with stage one water rationing for irrigators on the Waimea Plains expected to be implemented this month. Tasman deputy mayor and Eves Valley farmer Tim King says the Tasman Dry Weather Task Force was to meet

He won a number of prizes including the use of a Ford Ranger for a year, an iPad for himself and his employer and a range of tools. Shaun says he has always been interested in building as a career after helping out his father. “I picked up my first plastic toy hammer when I was two or three and have been building things ever since.” Russell says he is “an extremely proud father and employer” after Shaun’s win. He says Shaun is developing into a good builder who shows a lot of attention to detail and is also “very good with our clients”. Although Shaun is now

the country’s top building apprentice, Russell says he won’t be getting any special treatment. “A lot of people think that, because he’s working for his father, he gets it easy, but that’s not the case. If anything, I’m harder on him - I have very high expectations.” Registered Master Builders chief executive David Kelly says it was “fantastic to witness the future leaders in the building and construction sector”. “It’s a great time to recognise the best of the best in our industry, and celebrate the quality workmanship amongst the group - it’s safe to say our industry is in very safe hands.”

Nelson’s Shaun Campbell has gone from bottom of the class to the top after being named the Registered Master Builders Carters Apprentice of the Year in Auckland. Shaun’s future didn’t look too bright when he was “kicked out” of Waimea College as a year 10 student. But the 20-year-old showed he had learned a lot in the last five years after he nailed the competition to win the Apprentice of the Year. “Some people just aren’t suited for school and I was one of them,” Shaun says. “But the building site is very different from school and I’m really enjoying it.” Shaun was one of 10 national finalists at the awards with each undergoing a 45-minute interview followed by a practical test. The finalists had to build a children’s playhouse that was gifted to charity and the judges rated Shaun’s work as exceptional Shaun is trained through the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation and employed by his father Russell’s company, Inhaus Developments.

Pig hunt a massive success Simon Bloomberg

Louis Thompson caught the biggest pig in this year’s Waimea Weekly Wanderers Sports Club Pig Hunting Challenge it was just a matter of getting it back to the weigh-in on time. The fanatical hunter who has been chasing pigs “since I was a squirt” caught the 59.2kg boar near Murchison on Friday. However, Louis just made it back three minutes before the weigh-in closed on Saturday at 5pm after spending most of the afternoon trying to find his dogs. “I got the pig right on dark on

Friday but then I lost my dogs today and it took a while to find them,” Louis says. “It was touch and go getting back.” Louis was hunting with his girlfriend Paige Pointon, who he “dragged out for the day” and friend Tristan Prestage. Shannon Omlo caught the second heaviest pig at 56.4kg and shot the heaviest stag at 108.2kg although he couldn’t collect that prize because hunters were only allowed to win one major prize. Jesse Loughan shot the second heaviest stag at 63.7kg to win that award just ahead of George Cowper’s 63.4kg. Daniel Shand won $1000 for

catching a 44.6kg boar which was closest to the average weight of 43.73kg. One of Brendan Simpson’s three boars won the Best Tusk prize, Tapawera’s Craig Barker, Shannon Omlo and Tony Firth won the Rugby Club Challenge Trophy with a total weight of 158kg and Saraya Walsh was the top female hunter with a 35.5kg boar. Lewis Lines won the junior competition with a 38.9kg boar while Karl Newton won the intermediate section with 51.4kg. Eighty-nine seniors, 43 intermediate, 38 junior and six women caught 32 boars and five stags in the three-day competition.

Dam gets support from government Tasman deputy mayor Tim King is pleased Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy announced his support for the proposed Waimea Community Dam but says that has done nothing to resolve the key issue of funding the $70 million project. Nathan released a report at a meeting at Seifried Estate near Richmond last Thursday that says the dam would deliver major economic and environmental benefits to the NelsonTasman region. The report shows that building the dam would ensure a reliable source of water or irrigators and more than double the average annual catchment profit from $14.5 million to $29.5 million. Nathan says that would allow land to be converted from pasture to apples, reducing nitrogen leaching by 10 percent which is a “win-win’ for both the environment and the economy”. He says a dam would also “safeguard minimum flows in the Waimea River and recharge aquifers, helping improve water quality and recreational use”. However, Tim says “doesn’t address the issue of funding which clearly remains the biggest hurdle to getting the project over the line”. He says the report “will help with discussions with other parties” including the government, Crown Irrigation Investment (Limited), Nelson City Council and Tasman ratepayers” but the question of how the dam is funded remains unanswered. Tim remains hopeful that Crown Irrigation Investment will provide some of the funding and Nathan confirmed that those discussions “are underway”. Crown Irrigation Investment has $120million available for funding regional water infrastructure development throughout the country. “It’s one of the options open to the proponents of the Waimea Community Dam,” Nathan says. “We have allocated the funding to them but it’s up to the board to make the decision on behalf of tax payers.”

New CEO appointed for museum

The region’s museum has a new CEO after the appointment of Lucinda Blackley-Jimson last week. Lucinda is the exhibition manager from Auckland’s Museum of Transport and Technology and was previously a team leader at Te Papa. Lucinda says she is very excited about bringing together her love for museums with one of the places of greatest natural beauty in New Zealand. “Nelson has a rich heritage and a vibrant cultural expression and I feel honoured to be able to Lucinda contribute to that,” she says. Blackley“I’m passionate about Jimson. engaging visitors with contemporary stories and heritage, and I also see the Nelson Provincial Museum as an opportunity to make a vital hub of creativity, reflection, and communication in the region.” Lucinda will be at the museum for a week in early November to meet key staff and attend the Nelson Bays’ Heritage Trust AGM. She starts full time at the museum on November 30.

Here’s some stories from www. Police target boy racers: Police are actively targeting illegal street racers following an increase in “boy racer” activity recently. Police have received reports of groups of up to 30 vehicles converging in locations around the region, dumping diesel on the roads and doing burnouts. Acting Sergeant Peter Greenland says that, as well as being a risk to themselves and other road users, the activity was affecting residents in some of the target areas. “These people are making a lot of noise and they’re intimidating other road users. They’re treating cars like toys and public roads like their playground and that’s going to end in tears,” he says. Acting Sergeant Greenland said there was often a group of spectators encouraging the show-off behaviour of the drivers. Over the past week police have impounded and green-stickered three vehicles. The drivers of those vehicles have been summonsed to Court facing a charge of Sustained Loss of Traction under the Boy Racer Legislation. Road rage attack: A man was seriously assaulted after a road rage incident in the Moutere Valley last Thursday. The incident occurred on Gardner Valley Rd. The victim of the attack was driving a white ute on the Coastal Highway. He told police he overtook what is believed to be a maroon-coloured Suzuki Vitara

which was travelling slowly. The driver of the Suzuki has then overtaken the ute and both vehicles pulled off the highway and stopped on Gardner Valley Rd. man St last week by a man who then stole it. Police are investigating the incident and are seeking witnesses. The woman was on Tasman St, about 5pm on Monday, October 5, when she was approached by a male who demanded her bike and pushed her off it. The bike was located later that day outside a house in North Rd. The offender is described as a male Maori in his early 20s. He was wearing a white t-shirt and black shorts. Crash north of Nelson: A ute ended up in a ditch after an accident north of Nelson on Saturday morning. The ute was towing a trailer near the Cable Bay turn-off on State Highway 6 when it went off the road. No one was hurt in the incident and police and the fire service were on the scene.

Public invited to jail cell Police car rides, fingerprinting and taser demonstrations will be just a few of the things on offer this Sunday as part of Nelson Police Station open day. The open days are held all over New Zealand as a way to give the public a taste of how modern day policing works. Senior Sergeant Shane Miles says that it’s a great opportunity for Nelson Police to interact with the public in a relaxed, stress-free environment. “There will be lots of hands on stuff, and it’s really good fun. Kids love to try on the body armour, and the police car rides are also really popular. “We’ll also have a recruiting table for people who might want a career in the police.” The public can also meet police dogs, tour the station and cell block, see some search and rescue winching in action and check out the

As part of the open day, the police will be giving away toy police puppies to deserving people. Shane says that if anyone wants to nominate someone who would like one, they can send a message through their Facebook page, or by post to Police Puppies Private Bag 39 Nelson 7042 with their contact details. Winners will be announced at the open day and there will also be an opportunity to enter a lucky draw for the puppies on the day. Water quality improving, but could be better Simon Bloomberg The quality of water in the Tasman district’s rivers is improving although Richmond councillor and professional trout fishing guide Zane Mirfin says there’s still a long way to go with diseasecausing bacteria, metals and toxic chemicals still polluting many smaller streams. A State of the Environment report on the district’s river water quality was presented at the council’s Environment and Planning committee meeting in Richmond last Thursday. The latest five-yearly report focused on some “good news stories” with water quality continuing to improve significantly in 13 of the 57 sites sampled Tasman District Council monitoring staff Claire Webster and Zane Mirfin, right, fishing with client Chris Wadsworth but Zane says he’s disappointed because “we Jon McCallum stirring up deposited sediment in Powell Creek. on the Motueka River. could have done better”. “Some of the Richmond creeks aren’t looking paint | wallpaper | curtains | blinds too good. They have up to 10 times the accepted levels of some pollutants so that’s something we’ll have to work on so we definitely have some serious problems in our rivers. “It’s pleasing to see we are making some progress. Farmers and our staff have done a really good job but it’s only a start.” The reports states that water quality in about a third of streams draining low elevation land is poor with low oxygen levels, high temperatures and poor populations of macro invertebrates. Smaller streams in catchments dominated by Last days of pastoral land also had high levels of diseasecausing bacteria while smaller urban streams often had high concentrations of zinc, copper and other industrial contaminants. New flag debate, which do you like? I find the ‘red peak’ design promoted by a small group of people does nothing for me. The whole process is a fiasco. Nearly everyone I have spoken to, young and old, do not want to change our flag. Even though our whole emphasis today seems to be change for change’s sake. If we are to look at this question, which was raised by a quirk of John Key’s, the first question to be asked is, do we want to change our flag? If the majority said no, and I believe they would, that would be an end to the matter. But no, to confuse everyone, and at great cost, after hundreds of submissions, four are chosen. None of these would I want to wave, nor the late addition of the red peak. I think our mayor’s choice is the best of a lack-lustre bunch. New Zealand’s prime culture is from the United Kingdom. Our language is English, our system of government is English, our legal system and laws are English, and most of our sports are English. It is a wonderful heritage, one I am proud of. Roger Youmans. The fern and the southern cross are a must have. The mix of black, white and blue is great. Cynthia McConville. Silver Fern. Heather Waters. The one we have now! Mike Roberts.

I like driving past seeing what is for sale. Shawnee Burford-Young. I don’t have an issue with it unless, like on Salisbury Rd in Richmond, there is a sign specifically stating that you can’t, but the sellers blatantly ignore it. Those are the ones who should be fined as it is against a specific bylaw which is shown on the sign. Craig Kempton. You could be visiting a friend with no off-street parking. Nathan Wells.

Rubbish dumped on river banks: Perhaps it wouldn’t happen if it wasn’t so expensive to take rubbish to the dump, eh! Mike Roberts. Perhaps it wouldn’t happen if people acted like responsible citizens and took ownership of their own consumerism. Tracey Sturm. DHB plans for the future: I really hope there’s planning for the growing numbers of people living with chronic pain conditions. A chronic pain education programme is urgently needed. Instead of drugging the suffering, education into their form on chronic pain condition, ie how the nervous system and immune system work, how different things can trigger it, management tools, a support network, more involvement and choices of treatments and medications. It would be better than always starting with number 1 on their list and not being told we’re in the too hard basket and to learn to live with it. Also better communication as this lack has been a cause of much stress for many, which in itself without sickness/illness is harmful. Sarah Allsopp.

Nelson Pine saves $10M on power bills Simon Bloomberg Anyone who wants to reduce their household power bill should think about giving James Cameron and his team of engineers at Nelson Pine Industries a call. NPI’s energy-saving initiatives were commended last Thursday when Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority representative Ron Bull visited the plant. NPI has been working with its Christchurch-based energy consultant Enercon and the ECCA to improve its energy efficiency and Ron says he’s pleased with the savings. “They have done a lot of the good work in the past but now they are a lot more focused on gaining further savings,” Ron says. “Enterprises like Nelson Pine are doing very well in terms of saving energy.” James says they have managed to save 20 gigawatt hours of power a year over the last five years which is enough to power 2400 houses

or a suburb the size of Stoke. He estimates that two-thirds of those savings were made by making the fan systems, which are used to dry and transport wood fibre, more efficient. Installing LED lighting, eliminating the need for a 2.2megawatt heater by using heat from a hot oil line and automating a “pre-steaming control” have also contributed to the energy savings. James says the changes to the presteaming were instigated by the staff who “took it on themselves to optimise it and make changes that save around $100,000 a year”. “It’s really challenging trying to find new ways of saving energy but all the guys are doing a great job,” James says. “It’s a very collaborative approach.” NPI managing director Murray Sturgeon says James and his team have “done a tremendous job in reducing energy consumption”. The energy-saving initiatives helped NPI’s “ongoing quest to remain internationally competitive” and also reduced their ecological footprint. Nelson Pine Industries, which processes 40 per cent of the Nelson harvest of radiata pine into medium density fibreboard and laminated veneer lumber, received two highly commended awards at the ECCA Awards in 2012.

- Season Opening - Saturday 17 October - 6.00pm Speedway is great fun for the whole family so make sure you head along to the track and catch the action this season. Barry Whitnall/www.shuttersport.co.nz Summer is almost upon us and we all know what that means, speedway season is about to begin. If you’re a speedway fan, then be prepared for another season of thrilling Saturday nights spent at the track, and even if you’re uneducated in the action packed world of speedway, its time to introduce yourself to a sport that really knows how to entertain. With

pre-season laps behind them, drivers will be looking forward to unleashing themselves on the competition and starting the season off with a cloud of dust this weekend. With the gates opening at 5pm on Saturday, grab yourself a prime position at the track on Lansdowne Rd and settle in for a 6pm race start, when local and visiting drivers will battle

it out to win in the usual seven classes. Last year the speedway committee decided to introduce new trophies for grand opening night so that drivers could dive head first into competition at the start of the season. Murray Teece then approached the committee and generously offered his families sponsorship for all the trophies. After Murray passed away, the

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club

GOTCHA: Wanderers bowler Joe O'Connor takes a catch off his own bowling against Waimea Toi Toi United at Lower Ngawhatu on Saturday. The weekend's games were the first of the 2015-16 Nelson Car Company senior club cricket season and saw Taylor's Contracting Wanderers, Car Company Stoke/Nayland and Post Boy Hotel Wakatu take early leads against WTTU, ACOB and Nelson College respectively. The second and final day of all the games will be played this coming Saturday. Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport.

ITM Cup TIppIng

As summer approaches, all the boat owners are dusting off the cobwebs and checking the batteries are still charged in preparation of getting out into Tasman Bay to chase snapper and kingfish. However, as my recent weekend away highlighted, it is not just fishing that can be enjoyed by the boat owners. A trip over to Awaroa in the Abel Tasman emphasised how we have so much magical coastlines and scenery all at our backdoor. The number of tourists, kayakers, trampers, boats and yachts was amazing all the way up through the many golden bays. Boats sightseeing, accessing baches, diving and fishing, all making the most of this awesome area. Rumour has it that some snapper are in the bay early and are being caught on both rods and in nets off the beaches so it will not be too long

and there will be setlines being deployed everywhere. Grouper are still being caught up above D'Urville and still the odd big kingfish and snapper. Dawnbreakers fishing club is a local, family-orientated and friendly club that has monthly meetings and a 'fish by length' competition that is highly successful. Club member Luke James Dell has already set a big target on the longest snapper with a 84.5cm beast. The Dawnbreakers Club's first "social day" is this Sunday at 3pm at the "Red Shed" Tasman Bay Cruising Club, which is just to the south of the Nelson boat ramp. Any existing members and anyone wishing to join on the day is welcome along to this and there is also an online entry and payment available on www.dawnbreakers.co.nz Wishing you all safe boating and good times.

The call is going out for Nelsonians to volunteer at the upcoming Blackcap cricket internationals this summer. So far, 40 people have volunteered to help out during the one-dayers on December 31 and January 2, but Nelson Cricket Association and Sport Tasman need another 20 to assist with car parking, ushering and spectator support. Many of those who have put up their hand were part of the World Cup and its build-up and are keen to be involved again. They include Tony Watkins, the general manager of an advertising company in Stoke and a NZ Masters team cricketer. Tony worked as a team leader before and during the World Cup doing everything from car parking and picking up rubbish to helping out with the catering. “It was really enjoyable. I worked with a great group of people and we were well looked after. The weather was fantastic, the games were close and I think everybody, including the players, enjoyed it.” Sport Tasman’s Hayden Bryant says with

Nelson volunteers at the Cricket World Cup last summer. only two full time staff, Nelson Cricket relied on the support of volunteers to run such international events, which would otherwise be difficult and very expensive to host for a smaller centre like Nelson. “It means we have to work a little harder to get and keep such events.” Nelson Cricket general manager Richard Hayward says the volunteers’ efforts before and during the World Cup helped

make Saxton Oval a desirable venue for New Zealand Cricket and were a factor in Nelson being allocated the two Sri Lankan matches this summer. Hayden says those volunteering for the Sri Lankan games will receive a shirt, lunch and the chance to watch some of the cricket during the day. Men’s Forum Murray Savage (left) and Murray Nicholls with the pine log shield The Richmond Anglicans and Presbyterians began playing an annual cricket match in the early 1970s. I’m not sure how it started – maybe it was initiated by the Presbyterian minister, Don Barker, who was a keen cricketer. Maybe it was by the numerous Lions members in each parish, such a person in the Anglican church (Church on the Hill) was Wilf Gibson. Wilf organised the Anglican team, which was captained by Murray Savage. Alex Johnston organised the St. David’s Presbyterian team, which was captained by Murray Nicholls. The game was played on Sunday afternoon on the “village green” (playing field of Richmond Primary School) below the Church on the Hill. Each player in the fielding side had to bowl at least one over with non-cricketers allowed to bowl under-arm although rolling the ball along the ground (Australian style) was considered unsporting. When

batting every player had to score one run before either being bowled or caught out – there was no L.B.W (leg before wicket).

Afternoon Women’s Fellowship

A trophy was needed so a pine log coffee table that was no longer used had its legs removed and converted into a shield.

All Souls Service

This was always a great family occasion with many of the players wives coming to watch and chat while the children played. Pat Patterson usually brought his crazy bikes (which had off centre wheels) and these were very popular with the children. Afternoon tea was always had between innings. This was a good time for members of both churches to mix and chat because in those days Richmond was not large and most people knew each other. After one game we had a combined BBQ and fancy hat competition which proved popular with the children. — Alex Johnston, Presbyterian cricketer
