Fireworks spark anger in locals Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Locals were left fuming on Saturday night after unexpected fireworks at Saxton Fields were heard as far out as Wakefield, Redwood Valley and Atawhai. Pet and live-

stock owners took to Facebook to try to find out what was happening, with many outraged they hadn’t been notified it was going to happen so could secure their animals in advance. John Ivanof, owner of Combat Pyrotechnic Fireworks Displays, who put on the display for a

circus-themed 50th birthday party at the Stoke venue, insisted that the fireworks were legal and “in accordance with the laws and government-approved code of practice”. The Nelson City Council offices were inundated with calls on Monday by concerned residents

who were told that John was asked to do a “courtesy flier drop to houses in the immediate vicinity” as a condition of sign-off for the display to go ahead. But as the noise spanned a 15km radius, the scale of the flier distribution had been massively under managed. “I did a flier drop to the

Fireworks spark anger in locals from PAGE 1 display is even happening.” The wet weather and cloudy conditions meant the noise was amplified and possibly travelled further than on a dry, clear day. “I was walking my dog at the Appleby River and he took off,” Marion Maxwell told a Facebook group. “If I’d have known about the fireworks, I would have been at home with the music going.” Livestock at nearby Oaklands Milk Dairy Farm were also greatly affected. Samara Palmer wrote, “Shame they didn’t let us know at Oaklands, right behind where they went off - now there’s stock everywhere and four-day old calves who are beyond scared. It’s inconsiderate.”

Many residents didn’t immediately identify the explosions as fireworks either, as the low-lying cloud altered the sound, and they were terrified there was gunfire in the streets outside. Christina Bloxsome, who lives in Stoke, told Facebook, “I almost called the cops to say there was gunshot fired outside our house!” While several others in Richmond complained of windows rattling and houses shaking throughout the display. John says it all comes down to legislation and what is required by law. “I did everything within the legal requirement. Yet somebody has filed a complaint with the regulatory body say-

ing I’ve breached a rule and demanding I get fined $300,000 or jailed. It’s really upsetting and ridiculous.” Despite the dampner on the evening, others said they watched the display from afar and thought it was “spectacular”, which is another reason why John doesn’t shout about his displays from the rooftops. “If I notify too many people about a firework display, then I run into a crowd problem,” says John. “And that comes with its own safety issues of crowd control and also road closurers, which is all an added and unnecessary expense.” As well as the fireworks, the party had entertainment from jugglers, fire eaters and other circus acts.

Experts for ski field Jenny Nicholson The trans-Tasman bubble opening up provides a benefit for the local Rainbow Ski Field on the slopes, other than Australian tourists. Previously, the ski field has utilised expert Australian ski patrollers but Covid meant they were absent for last year’s ski season. “We have already locked in two staff with specialist skills who hold avalanche certification and have been with us for many years,” says Rainbow Ski area mountain manager, Tom Harry. “The expertise they bring includes terrain management, snow safety, first aid and more.” “Staffing is the big one for us,” says Tom. Tom is hoping that instructors who have been coming for years will also be back, to bolster the school’s programme and the weekend skiing. He also hopes that supply and de-

Busy phones and busy skies following announcement Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The phones at Richmond House of Travel were busy following last week’s announcement of a trans-Tasman travel bubble. “We’re very excited,” says Richmond House of Travel’s owner/operator, Amanda Radovanovich. In announcing quarantinefree travel between New Zealand and Australia would start on Monday 19 April, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern acknowledged that one sacrifice that had been particularly hard for many over the past year was the separation from family and friends who live in Australia. “We are thrilled to see the opening of the travel bubble to Australia on April 19. Many Kiwis are eagerly awaiting the chance to reunite with family and friends, many having been separated from loved ones for over a year now,” says Amanda Radovanovich. Locals, Terry and his wife have two sons both living with their families in Australia. An annual trip to visit was cancelled last year and they toyed with the idea of a trip and paying for MIQ this year, but once it

He is aware there are risks to travelling, but says if anything goes wrong with the bubble they are happy to hunker down and have places to stay. “The risk isn’t huge for us. We are happy to take the risk and I don’t think the taxpayer should pay for anything that does go wrong,” he says. It’s not just families who are feeling relief with the announcement, it is hoped that businesses will also benefit. However, Discover New Zealand Motorhome rentals

owner Tony Terrell says it is unlikely to make a huge difference unti later in the year in the Tasman region. “Enquiries have revvedd up for spring onward but there has only been a few queries for pre-September,” he says. Jacinda warned that travel will not be as it was pre-Covid-19 with those who travel doing so under the guidance of ‘flyer beware.’ “People will need to plan for the possibility of having travel disrupted if there is an outbreak,” she says. Amanda at Richmond House of Travel said they are available 24/7 for any of their customers who find themselves stranded. “We’re only a reassuring phone call or email away,” she says.

The Order of Merit and Silver Shield have been awarded to two local Richmond Community Patrollers, Marty Price and Gareth Worboys. They were nominated by the Deputy Police Commissioner and Mike Gill of Richmond Community Patrol. The award acknowledges their work in assisting police in an incident in July of 2020. The pair were patrolling in

their duties as part of the Richmond District Community Patrol when a police call came over the radio asking units to look for an intruder on a property on Main Road Stoke. Marty and Gareth responded to the call, arriving to find a lone police officer with an offender resisting arrest. Marty and Gareth assisted the officer to get the offender on the ground and handcuff him. The officer had sustained in-

juries as a result of the resistance and Marty drove her to the hospital. Chairman of CPNZ, Chris Lawton, and the board of trustees presented Marty and Gareth with the awards at a recent training conference in Palmerston North. They were given the Order of Merit certificate, but Chris Lawton also felt they were deserving of the CPNZ Silver Shield for their bravery and assistance to police.

Nelson Matters The end of school term this weekend marks a big change in Nelson secondary education. Students and their families will no longer have a choice of coed or single sex education after having both options for decades. This change is because of Labour’s education policy. Their new law passed in 2020, gives the Government the power to direct which school a student must attend. School enrolment

policies used to be made by each School Board of Trustees but are now determined by Government. I disagree with this “Government knows best” approach that has also seen Nelson lose control of our polytechnic NMIT. I am a proud supporter of all our colleges. My four children have had an excellent education at Nelson College for Girls, Nelson College and currently at Nayland College. I highly

rate Waimea College where my wife was educated and Garin College that I helped establish when I was Minister of Education. Our five Colleges have different strengths and not all teenagers are the same. It also ensures our Colleges continuously strive to do better. The Nayland zone was strongly opposed by over 100 submissions from parents. The Nayland College Board called it “draconian” and “did not

respect diversity”, a view endorsed by Nayland’s talented Principal Daniel Wilson. The Labour Government ignored these Nelson submissions and put the new restrictions into effect this month. Nelson parents are so annoyed two petitions have been organised opposing the loss of choice of a co-ed education by Rebecca Glen and Brendan Hills. Rebecca’s is still open for signatures at https://www.

parliament.nz/en/pb/petitions/ document/PET_99420 Nelson has a proud educational history of excellence, choice and innovation dating back to the establishment of New Zealand’s first schools. This loss of parental choice of school and local decision making by school boards compromises Nelson giving every student the best possible education. Advert.

Vaccine update Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Plans continue for group three - those over 65 and those with disabilities or underlying health conditions - to receive their vaccine from May. However, already in April, Nelson Marlborough Health has offered occasional vaccines to this group. Vaccines are offered by appointment and when short notice is given that someone is unable to attend their appointment, bookings are offered to the 65 plus group. This is to ensure the vaccine doesn’t expire and is not wasted. The remainder of the population is to be vaccinated from July. Around 5,000 vaccines had been given in the Nelson Marlborough area as of 6 April. Of these, 4360 were first doses and 655 second doses. Nationwide, 90,000 doses have been given, with most being given to 20 to 69 year olds. In the 70 plus age group there have been just over 3000 given, and close to 200 given to 10 to 19-year-olds. Poppy tributes placed in remembrance Jenny Nicholson With Poppy Day this Friday, the local scouts and keas met with returned servicemen to place poppies on servicemen’s graves. It’s become a tradition after 10 years, only missing last year due to lockdown. The children and their leaders were handed a map of where to find the graves. “We do this because it’s a respect,” says six year old Lucas Wingate. Henry Lerbs added that ‘it’s a really good way to give back to the people who served.’ John D’Rose and John Llewellin had walked past every grave to identify all headstones poppies were to be place on. Ross Norgate was in the navy from 1966 when, because he wasn’t yet 18, he joined as a ‘boy’. He talked to the children about the graves they were laying poppies on, including Joe McKenzie’s, who escaped from Crete after he was captured. 100 years of dog trialling Jacqui Rawson It won’t be just any run of the mill annual dog trial this month in Wakefield as the Waimea Sheep Dog Trial Club celebrate 100 years. Colin Gibbs and his dogs will be competing in this year’s event, just as his grandad Albert Gibbs did in 1921, plus he’s one of the organisers. “Running an event like this takes a lot of sheep, as every competitor/ dog get a fresh lot of three sheep,” says Colin. And if you’re wondering why it takes three sheep, Colin says, “Well, if one sheep breaks away you still have a mob. But if they all go in different directions, you just have a mess.” Of the four judges who have been invited to judge the event, one attended his first dog trial at 10 days of age. Being brought home from hospital with his mum, his dad took a detour to the local Waimea trials so he could run his dog in the competition. The event, as well as a celebration, will be a chance for competitors to gain qualifying points to take them forward to the NZ Championships, in Southland in May. Giving additional precedence to this year’s dog trial is the fact the Marlborough Nelson Provincial Sheep Dog Championships are also being contested. With competitors from Canterbury, as far south as

Albert and Colin are not the only members of the Gibbs family involved in the club with various members covering 65 years of involvement out of the 100. Known as “Granddad” in the dog trial world, the late Phil Gibbs, Queen’s Service Medal (QSM), three times New Zealand titleholder, was a great competitor and mentor to others coming into dog trial competitions. His second son Colin has also just been awarded a QSM, 27 years after his father, for services to Agriculture and Community support. If you remember and enjoyed the TV Dog Show you might want to get along to the Waimea Dog Trial Club’s Centennial Trials running over the weekend of the 16th to 17th April 2021 at 326 Higgins Road, Wakefield.

Success for local composer Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Jessie Leov has received a composition commission from the SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music. The result of the commission is a collaboration between Jessie and The Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus. They’ll be singing the piece written by Jessie for

a cappella SSAA choir (a choir composed of two distinct Soprano (S) sections and two distinct Alto (A) sections.. “I’m very grateful to have been selected for the SOUNZ Community Commission,” says Jessie. The community-based commission was established in 1999 and set up to bring composers and community groups together in creating and per-

forming a new piece of work. Jessie, who now lives in Auckland, was excited to be able to work with a community group from home for this commission. Her proposal was for a women-only choir with no instruments. “I went to the choir and asked if they were keen, and thankfully they said ‘sounds great, let’s do it,’” she says.

Together, they’ve created a work that is accessible to, and can be performed by, the majority of women’s community choirs in New Zealand, which is an expectation of the commission. The Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus are from all over the Nelson Tasman area and amass a total of 50 female singers. The choir sings a range of different styles of vocal music and has singers of all backgrounds and skill levels. “The choir is open to being explora-

tive, both creatively and musically,” Jessie says. The SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music, which administers the commission, is provided with funding by an anonymous donor which is paid out to the composer and the choir. With the funding the choir receives they are to put on a public performance within one year of the commission being awarded. The choir will be performing in June at the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts.

Student director living her dream Jenny Nicholson Paige Gill is directing Waimea College’s upcoming production ‘Our House.’ Paige recently won a section at the Shakespeare Festival for her acting, but says her directing role is satisfying as she sees everyone performing well. “I just direct, making everyone else look good,” she says. With a cast of 50, she mainly focuses on the acting aspects of the production but is also consulted on clothing and makeup ideas. What is unu-

Paige will still be at college next year but hopes to go do Performing Arts at University in Wellington in 2022. Our House is playing from the 14 until the 17 of April, with evening shows and one matinee show. Tickets are $15 for students and $25 for adults and are available at trybooking.com.

Waimea College’s hall has been transformed into a set for the upcoming production. Our House is a musical about a boy named Joe on his 16th birthday. He breaks into an apartment complex to impress a girl and is caught by the police. He then faces a dilemma, to stay or run. From this point there are two parallel stories,

New to Richmond and well overdue that’s what Chris Webley thinks about his new service Expresslube. Based in the Waimea WOF station Chris and daughter/manager Hayley are now able to offer motorists a fast efficient oil change that complies with all major manufactures specifications. “Although the concept is not new the local service is” says Chris. “We are very proud to offer high quality Valvoline oils and filters that offer no compromise when it comes to looking after your cars”. Chris and Hayley also want customers to know that they offer the service to older cars and 4WD as well as some of the latest models. “That includes diesels as well. We have a massive range of filters so yes we do have the factory recommended filter for your car or 4WD”. As an opening offer Chris and Hayley are offering a genuine full safety check and a oil and filter change for only $99-00. “We also see this oil and filter change option as a great addition to our WOF business and we want to make it as easy as possible for motorists to simply drive in, no bookings needed, and let us look after their vehicle and at a great rate too”.

Promoting positive ageing The Positive Ageing Expo will be back in 2021, showcasing the recreational, health and social services available in Nelson – Tasman to make ageing a positive experience. The expo has been running since 2008, attracting over 2000 people each year. The next one is coming up on Friday, 16 April 2021 from 10am to 3pm at the Headingly Centre in Richmond. DID YOU KNOW THAT MANAGING HEARING LOSS MAY HELP PROTECT AGAINST DEMENTIA? 50 MILLION people worldwide have dementia and according to a 2019 study(1), 50% of people believe they are unable to reduce the risk of dementia.(2) A new report shows a surprising link between hearing loss and dementia.(3) It is thought that if you have difficulty hearing, there’s a chance that this may cause reduced cognitive stimulation, which may be associated with cognitive decline.

Do you have difficulty with background noise in busy restaurants? You might be suffering from hearing loss without even realising. Audika recommends maintaining an active hearing lifestyle and booking in annual hearing checks to help maintain an overall higher quality of life in your later years.

such a raft of information disseminated in one day, it means you don’t have to navigate your way through websites or phone books – you can chat directly with stallholders and service providers. Keynote speakers include Merryn Gott who will discuss the impacts of Covid-19 on older New Zealanders and how the media portrayed older people during lockdown. This will be followed by Bevan Grant and Mal Drummond who will host an interactive discussion around the growing concerns of Elder Abuse. Throughout the day, there will also be the opportunity to try your hand at new activities such as Line Dancing, Dru Yoga and Fit for Fun. The expo is hosted by the Tasman District Council. “It’s my first year of involvement with organising the event,” says Gary. “We have a good cross section of people across a steering group because some of the agencies who support the expo already see the value of holding it. The event is a great opportunity to get everyone in one place so people can make connections.” Getting to the Expo The expo aims to celebrate every-

thing that’s great about growing older, and provide opportunities for older residents stay active, connected, healthy and happy. Helping seniors and their families

A grand tour of the Gables

Ruth Russ

Many of the walls wear only tattered streamers now, the coloured and patterned layers marking the years of both human love and nature’s temperament. The Gables, a grand home in Waimea West, has stood since 1864. So much of it has been consumed by borer and water leaks, and yet, standing in the doorway of the replicated lean-to that sits on its original footprint, looking into the dimly-lit original hallway evokes a sense of eerie wonder. The old, wide floorboards creak as you approach the maid’s staircase, which effectively rendered the maid invisible as she snuck up to her private wing of the house. This perhaps makes the maid’s quarters sound more grand than they are, but her room is surprisingly large, nestled in the centre of a gable with its slanted ceilings. Perhaps there was more than one maid to service the six-bedroomedhome.

Through the door which concealed the maid’s quarters, another hallway passes several bedrooms and leads to the main staircase. At the bottom of the stairs, the music room’s enormous bay window opens out toward the road, along which ran a picket fence. Next to the music room is a living room bearing a stately simplicity, with its impressively panelled ceiling and towering mantelpiece. The unpretentious carvings add to its uniqueness, and above the mantel sits a framed photograph of Annie Palmer, the Gables’ original mistress. She looks as though she belongs with the house, clothed in the dark finery of years gone by. The Gables housed both a post office (in use before the Brightwater Hall was erected) and a general store. While the post office sat at the back of the house in the lean-to, near the originally open-air kitchen, the general store, with its Victorian wooden shelving and counters, invited people in off the road. Further around the back of the house, a barn dou-

bled up as a ballroom, and if guests needed fresh air, they could take a turn about the paddock next to the house, from where all 60,000 bricks used to construct the Gables were dug up and fired on-site. The owner of the house, John Palmer, who arrived in Nelson on the Phoebe, has been described as a merchant, farmer and publican—and also a little eccentric. Using a team of oxen, rather than horses, to plough the tough Waimea West soil, he is believed to have been one of the first settlers to grow hops in Nelson; an early photograph of the property shows oast houses (hop kilns) near the rear of the Gables. John based the Gables on a house in Ipswich, where the Palmers originally came from. I was loath to end my tour of this incredible house, provided so kindly by its present owners. It was an honour to be able to walk the steps of its original owners, and to glimpse the grandeur of what must have been one of Nelson’s finest homes in its day.

A fair contingent of competitors are making their way north to Nelson from Cromwell as well, including ex-Warrior and Kiwi Rugby League player Whetu Taewa. Whetu was in the original Auckland Warriors team back in the day but over the last few seasons has been racing in speedway including in Sprintcars the last couple of years and is really getting to grips with the 900 horsepower beast. Other promotions over the two nights are the third and final round of the Three Quarter Midget club championship and the first-ever club championship for our newest class, the Quarter Midgets for kids aged from 8 years old to 15 years of age. To round out the first night of racing the Production Saloons will contest their Easter Championship. On the second night, the Quarter Midgets once again feature and will contest their Easter Championship while the other kids class, the Youth Ministocks, will also contest their Easter Championship. Please take note that the Dirtworks South Island Sprintcar championship on Saturday the 17th will start at 6.00pm while the Sunshine Classic meeting on Sunday the 18th April will kick off at 5.00pm. For more info head to our website at nelsonspeedway.co.nz or alternatively head over to our official Nelson Speedway Association Facebook page and give us a like and be in to win free tickets to both nights of racing. Lunch on the Hill Jenny Nicholson Twice a month, the Church on the Hill opens it’s doors for a lunch and a cuppa. The lunches are long running, but numbers have increased since lockdown. Organiser Sara Clover says they are averaging over 30 people, a mix of regulars and those who just come occasionally. “It’s come and have a lunch with us. Parishioners are there, too,” says Sara. Sara says people come for a variety of reasons but connection with others is key and a change of scenery is healthy. Talking with others, she says there are many who would prefer to meet at a cafe for coffee, rather than invit-

ing people home for a meal. “I heard today that there’s a need to get out of the same four walls,” she says. While a koha is asked for, Sara says those who struggle to give a donation can come for a meal anyway. Sara has a team who help prepare the food. They provide a vegetarian option, and if they are notified before the day can provide a gluten-free meal. The Church on the Hill also has a ‘Help yourself ’ table of food. This is positioned outside the door of the hall. Sara says it was purposefully put outside so people could take the food with no questions asked. The next lunch on the hill is 11 am Tuesday 20 April.

New minister Holy Trinity, known as The Church on the Hill, has a new minister, Zane Elliott. Zane grew up in Blenheim before training at Bishopdale Theological Church in Nelson. After graduation he worked at St Matthews in Dunedin before working as a chaplin at Burnham Military Camp. Zane and his wife Karen led a church in Indonesia until Covid-19 hit, and they lived in lockdown for three months. “It wasn’t great.” says Zane. They returned to New Zealand and are happy to be back in Nelson. “I’m really pleased to be here. Bishop Steve’s vision and direction are encouraging and I’ve come into an amazing, faithful community. We have an great facility that we can use to bless the community,” he says. He and Karen met when they were 15. They have two children, William who is 9 years old and Amelia who is seven.

score in favour of Central 12-7. The second half started with renewed vigour, and with Luca Roden controlling the field position Wanderers did dominate for periods and exerted pressure on the visitors. This pressure caused the discipline to drop amongst the Central team and Luca Roden kicked four penalties into the wind to take the hosts out to a 19-12 lead which they held until the last minute of play when a desperate final attack by

Central saw a melee on the line result in a try that was converted and a final score of 19-19, which was a fair reflection of the contest. Glenn Grant was particularly pleased with the teamwork displayed in very challenging conditions and, despite conceding three tries, felt that the defence pattern and technique was solid and the commitment by all players indicated a genuine desire to contribute on defence. The game was notable for a number of solid, tough tackles by

both teams, and it is a tribute to both sets of coaching staff that injuries were few and minor. Forwards coach Ethan Reuben acknowledged Central “as a well drilled side with some key play makers and ball carriers in the mix, so first up was a good challenge for us”. The Player of the Day awards for Wanderers saw Josh Moorhouse rewarded for his totally committed performance, supported by Chris Haluafia and Apetone Vaka who both stood out for work rate and effort, but it really was a day when every single player was in contention and especially every forward, including the reserves. With six debutants having their first outing, and Josh Moorhouse and Josh Grant receiving 25-match ties from Patron and Principal Sponsor Charlie Taylor, the after match function was subdued (due to the result) but positive, due to the performance which augurs well for the remaining games.

The long-awaited return of rugby to Brightwater occurred on Saturday when the Taylors Wanderers Division 1 rugby team hosted Central from Blen-

heim at Centennial Park in the opening match of the Tasman Trophy 2021 championship. The Wanderers management has recruited well during the off season and a highly-competitive team ran out into the extremely uncomfortable conditions that prevailed on Saturday. Choosing to take advantage of the strong tail wind, Wanderers had the worst possible start, conceding a penalty in the first contact situation. Then Central displayed grand ball control, keeping possession for almost the entire 15 minutes which followed, assisted by six additional penalties which eventually resulted in two well taken tries and a 12-0 lead. Wanderers discipline improved and gradually they worked their way back in to the contest, creating a number of fine continuity phases before finally driving Jacobus de Kock over from close range.
