Digging starts for Waimea Community Dam Bruno Saia Reporter

Building a more secure water future for Tasman is the goal of all those gathered at the Waimea Community Dam Lee Valley site,
for the project’s ground-breaking ceremony, on Friday last. “Today is a very important milestone because we are recognising all the hard work that got us here,” said the CEO of Waimea Water Ltd, Mike Scott. Waimea Water Ltd represents the
shared interests of Tasman District Council and Waimea Irrigators Ltd to oversee and manage the Waimea Community Dam’s development, construction, and operation. The digging for the new $104.4 million project started on Mon-
day after it was approved last November by Tasman District councillors. “The last few months we were working on the access roads, clearing the vegetation, getting the site ready and now we start work on constructing the dam,” Mike says. “It’s been over
10 years and this is a big project and a huge effort, and a lot of people had put a huge amount of work showing real leadership, vision, resilience and determination to make this happen.”

Elderly care; updating practise Susan Johnson One of the first things you notice when walking through the doors of Oakwoods Retirement Village is the absence of the smell of boiled cabbage. The other unusual sight is a group of school children. That’s because this facility has a new approach to health and wellness, according to the clinical nurse manager Andrew Morrison “it’s about thinking well, sleeping well and moving well.” One size does not fit all anymore, the residents have much more choice. After taking a survey from the residents, staff rosters were adapted, and breakfasts
moved so the residents could get up whenever they wanted to. The have an excellent chef giving much more choice, not only over menus but portion size as well. Andrew also believes that once the elderly move into rest homes they lose connection with the community and lack diversity in the day, so day trips are taken and and age-to-age programmes such as sing along with school children are done regularly. Oakwoods has no set visiting times either. There are regular household meetings with the residents for feedback, the aim being to improve residents experience,

Council gives 117k towards land buy Bruno Saia The Snowden’s Bush Trust has had a much-needed boost in its mission to purchase a piece of land to gift back to the community. The Tasman District Council has agreed to fund the project for $117,000 of the total $350,000 so that the trust can buy the land. For the Trust this is a welcome injection for their fundraising drive. They have a year to raise the funds to buy the land from the Anglican Diocese so they can gift it to the Department of Conservation. According to the Tasman District Council spokesperson, that support is conditional on the trust raising the balance of the price by July 2020. “The council is supportive of partnerships that allow greater community benefits to be achieved.
“Through initiatives like this, we can achieve great long-term outcomes for public spaces and the people who use them.” The Snowden’s Bush Trust started its quest last week to raise $350,000 within 12 months so it can purchase a piece of land near Brightwater to gift back to the community. It was created by a group of Brightwater residents concerned that the 3,500m² area was going to be turned into a housing development. Snowden’s Bush is one of the last surviving native lowland bush areas of the Waimea Plains. It covers over five hectares on Waimea West Road and is a rare example of the podocarp forest that once covered much of the area. The trust still needs to raise $233,000 to guarantee the protection of the land and everyone is invited to donate through its website: http://www. snowdensbushtrust.nz.

The Waimea Community Dam will be New Zealand’s first large one built in over 20 years. It will be approximately 53 metres high, 220 metres long and 6 metres wide at the crest. At times, there will be more than a hundred people working on the project, many of them local. “80 percent of the workforce is local, but aspects of the construction require some expertise from around the country and overseas,” Mike says. The contractor to build the dam is a joint venture between Fulton Hogan and Taylors
Contracting. Quality engineer for Fulton Hogan and Taylors Contracting, Reece Moon, says he realises the importance of the work he is doing. “It is an absolute necessity for the region, definitely it feels like doing something that is going to be important for the next hundred years.” “I travel out here every day and it’s actually really good. It’s quite relaxing. “The drive up here, there is the natural beauty of the place, it’s amazing. As you come up here, look at the water, it’s crystal clear, you pass a couple of good swiming holes,” he says.
Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne says this is one of the most important infrastructure projects that we are ever likely to see in the region and it’s certainly one of the largest. “The dam is a game-changer for Nelson Tasman, it secures household water for our urban community and will grow our primary industries, as well as make sure a healthy level of water is maintained in the Lee and Waimea Rivers at all times.” Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2021, with the total reservoir filling with water and it’s final commissioning expected to be in early 2022.

E-bike charging stations coming to Tasman Staff Reporter
Here’s the
facts
We are fully-qualified Harley Davidson dealership number 4437.
To get here we had to spend tens of thousands of dollars on speciality Harley Davidson workshop diagnostic equipment to reach the required level - and there is only one level. We had to train our mechanics specifically on Harley Davidson. The trainers came from the USA and Australia and spent many hours helping us perfect our techniques. We have access to a worldwide network of Harley Davidson specialists should we need them.
Tasman will soon have several new charging stations for e-bikes. They are going to be free of charge for the first two hours and there is still no confirmation regarding the costs after that. Battery-powered transport options are becoming more common on our streets, with e-bikes in particular now very popular. Moving from conventional vehicles to biking and other forms of electric transport has many benefits for the community, including reducing road congestion and damage, pedestrian safety, and reducing carbon emissions. The charging stations, called Bikedocks, are provided by New Zealand company Big Street Bikers. Each has 10 charging stands and an electronic media screen for maps, advertising and public information. People using the Bikedocks will use a mobile app to park and charge their e-bike or mobility scooter, with locking also available for the e-bikes. They have identified six locations in the district that would suit Bikedocks, in Richmond, Mapua, Tapawera, Motueka and Takaka, locations which would encourage e-biking on Tasman’s Great Taste Trail as well as cycle commuting. Nelson City Council is also proposing to introduce Bikedocks this summer. Advertising will subsidise the initial purchase cost and the ongoing running costs of the Bikedocks, while we will pay for the cost of installation. The Mapua, Motueka and Richmond Bikedocks will be installed this summer.

Brightwater couple wins big Staff Reporter For Heather and Graham Steer it’s only natural to be near an engine. Riding bikes and driving fast cars comes naturally to this couple who also have a grown-up family who pretty much follow in their parents’ footsteps. Riding for over 50 years, Graham and Heather not only own an American supercar each and a Chevy Corvette, they also own and ride Harley Davidsons; A Fatboy and a Heritage Springer. Now they can also add a Harley Davidson 500cc Street Harley. This was a New Zealand-wide prize offered as part of the “shiny side up” motorcycle rider safety programme also incorporating the Ride Forever component. The key focus was educating and growing rider awareness and safer riding techniques. It was also included on the programme information and
training regarding education on riding gear and some great tips from those who know ,like roadracer Andrew Stroud and American Brittany Morrow. Partnered in the course was Tasman District Council and ACC, along with Harley Davidson New Zealand. Feedback from those who participated in the course has been great and both Heather and Graham really recommend it. “Even after 50 years of careful riding”, Graham said, “I was genuinely surprised at just what I was able to pick up and incorporate into my motorcycling. ‘Things I thought I knew and things I had no idea about. ‘I couldn’t recommend it enough and its certainly will add to the enjoyment that both of us get when we are out on the highway. “You never stop learning”, he says. Dealer principle of Filco Har-
ley Davidson, Dave Filer, said he was over the moon that locals had won the New Zealand-wide prize. “And knowing the whole history regarding this Brightwater couple, the Harley Davidson Street 500 couldn’t have gone to a better home” he said. “ Harley Davidson New Zealand and Filco clearly understand that our commitment to our industry also includes the ongoing focus on safety and enjoyment. This is what this is all about.” And for the record, Heather said the bike will be staying with the family. The Shiny Side Up course commences again early next year probably, in early February, and people are asked to contact Filco for details. All information about the Shiny Side Up course and also about ‘The Shine Side up Bike Fest’ can be found at Filco’s Website: https://shinysideup. co.nz/nelson/.

The Community Awards recognise local residents who have done voluntary work in their community over a long period of time. This year’s ceremony was held last week at the Headingly Centre. Richard and Rose Shepard from Wakefield and Cecile Strang from Richmond, were recognised by the Tasman District Council for their volunteer work. Ethel Dixon and Jody Maru from Motueka and Joy Warren from Golden Bay were also honoured during the ceremony. “We’ve done a lot over the years and it’s amazing to be recognised for that,”
says Rose Shepard. “We just came back from Dunedin and got the letter in the mail. We couldn’t believe it, we’re over the moon”. Cecile Strang also did a lot during the 30 years she’s been part of Richmond’s community. The ‘Friends of the Richmond Library’, the ‘Opera Listening Group’ and the ‘Wine Tasting Group’ are some of the places where she has volunteered over the years. She is also responsible for the ‘Music Mornings’, a group which started in the early 2000s and is still going at the Town Hall. “Now the most important thing I do is this monthly music event and it’s completely
voluntary, a lot of work, but we have performances from all around the world”, says Cecile. “We get so much pleasure from it”. Mayor Richard Kempthorne believes that volunteers are fundamental to the community. “Volunteers make our community work”, he says. “If we didn’t have volunteers working in what they’re doing, there would be a lot that wouldn’t get done”. According to Richard, the awards are also important to stimulate young people to volunteer. “We must encourage any young people to look at volunteer positions and organisations and support them”, he says.

A new self check-in kiosk is helping to streamline services at Nelson Hospital, with staff encouraging patients to “give it a go”. The kiosk is being trialled for three months in the outpatient’s department, and, if successful, several of them could be rolled out throughout the hospital. It’s as easy as scanning the barcode on your appointment letter, which tells your doctor, nurse or specialist that you’ve arrived. Charge manager for clinical support, Sue Lawrence, says the aim is to cut down wait times for patients, freeing up medical and reception staff to treat patients faster and have more time for other work. “We’re finding it’s quicker, reduces queues and gives people a choice,” she says. “We’ve had it since mid-July and over that time we’re seeing a lot of patients give it a go and we’re getting good feedback.” And for those patients who prefer face-to-face inter-

As well as allowing patients to check in to their appointments, they can use the kiosk to update their demographic information, including their address, email and emergency contact. Admin support Cesca McDonald says on a busy day they can get up to 180 people through the outpatient’s department. “It’s definitely helping to free up our time,” she says. Once the trial is over, staff will carry out patient surveys and look over the analytics. If all goes well, they hope to install more in the outpatient’s department and in other high-flow areas, such as orthopedics and medical units. The cost of the kiosks, which are supplied through Florence Health, is yet to be determined. Sue says she encourages patients to try it out, even if they aren’t sure what to do. “Just give it a go. Temporary fix for potholes
Wensley Road residents and road users may have noticed the seal surface coming off at some locations along the road. According to Tasman District Councill, the damage has worsened over winter, probably due to an issue with the underlying layer of seal. As a temporary repair the asphalt was laid over some of the failed areas. In August the pavement strength will be tested, which will help to determine the future treatment to the surface. The more permanent treatment will be applied in summer. In the meantime, a contractor will continue to monitor and remove loose stones on Wensley Road and carry out temporary repairs as needed. Other roads across Tasman District are showing signs of pavement fatigue, and will need repairs until the weather is more suitable.

If you looked at Georgie Hill, you would see just a normal sevenyear-old girl. She likes running, horses and trampolining. But Georgie also suffers from cystic fibrosis (CF) - New Zealand’s most common life-limiting genetic condition, which creates sticky secretions that are difficult to cough up. People with CF also have a much higher risk of developing serious complications from bugs that are generally harmless to other people. Her mum Lisa says that they knew three days after she was born that something wasn’t right. So, since then, Georgie has been receiving physiotherapy every day to release mucus from her lungs. “People with cystic fibrosis, you would never know they have it. That is why they call it the ‘quiet disease’.” Lisa says they deal with it day by
day. “Georgie looks absolutely fine, but they can get sick and in a heartbeat that can change.” This week is cystic fibrosis awareness week which was created to build awareness on what cystic fibrosis is and how it affects people. For Georgie, who goes to Brightwater School, it means living with a disease with no cure. Lisa says as Gerogie gets older she is asking the hard questions about CF. We have been honest since she was young. If you always tell them then you never have to tell them. You just have to keep her health as good as it can be and get on and enjoy life.” There is no cure, but the gene that causes CF has been identified and Lisa says new research and medications that focus on ways to repair or replace the gene are very promising. But until then Lisa says they are encouraging Georgie to continue doing the things she loves.

A new approach to an old problem frOm PAGE 1 optimism and function. When a resident arrives at Oakwoods high-intensity wing, the aim is to find out what motivates this individual, what are their goals? Some arrive by ambulance, are rehabilitated and then go home. Some start with that goal but end up staying. One such resident is Tony. He has been a resident of Oaklands since suffering a stroke five years ago. I asked Tony what wellness meant to him, “living as near as possible to a normal life”: Along with the facilities on offer at Oakwoods, Tony has also engaged a professional trainer, Debbie Wastney, and although Debbie has
only been working with Tony for a few sessions she finds him an inspiration. “Despite the emotional and personal setbacks that came with the stroke, he never gave up”. Compliments Debbie. Oakwoods Retirement Village in Richmond will hold its ‘Wellness Expo’ on Friday, 16th August. The main goal of the event is to showcase all services in the local community that can help make day to day life more manageable and fun for Oakwoods residents. Representatives from Hearing Nelson, St. John’s Hospital, Health and Disability Advocacy Service, Good Companion Service, Age Concern, Freedom Drivers, and Asthma Soci-
ety will be present. The residents will also be able to enjoy physical activities such as ‘sit and be fit’ exercise and personal training services in a range of fitness areas. An acupuncture specialist will also be present at the event. “Some of these groups have multi services to offer, so there will be lots to learn about a wide range of opportunities”, says Jan Edge, from Oakwoods. Everyone in the local community who is interested is welcome to participate at ‘Wellness Expo’. The event will take place between 9 am and midday on Friday, 16th August. Oakwoods Retirement Village is at 357 Lower Queen Street, in Richmond.

Māori. More recently, the treasures have crossed oceans to be appreciated by visitors in their hundreds of thousands across China and in Paris, France. The Nelson-based exhibition sees the return of contemporary works created by celebrated artist Fayne Robinson who connects to local Te Tauihu iwi, as well as loaned treasures from Richard Nunns
and Nelson College. Some of the taonga have a connection to local places such as Cobb River, D’Urville Island and Port Underwood. Outstanding examples of traditional toki (tools), hei tiki (pendants in human form), and mere (weapons) form the majority of the exhibition, with some of the oldest thought to originate from early settlement
times, around 700-800 years ago. Four large pounamu touchstones complete the over-200 piece collection – the largest of which, “Te Hurika”, weighs 170kg. Nelson Museum Interim Chief Executive, Olivia Hall, says “It’s rare to see a collection of such precious taonga in one place, and to know that this place is our museum is an absolute honour”.

News Twenty one people were killed when the Cromwell to Dunedin express left the rails and crashed on its side while rounding a curve on the (now closed) Otago Central line, south of Hyde. There were 113 passengers on board, many bound for the Dunedin Winter Show or the Wingatui race meeting. Forty-seven people were injured. The inquiry found that the intoxication of the engine-driver was the primary cause of the accident as well as excessive speed. The driver had survived and was charged with manslaughter. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment. On the 17 February 1991 a memorial dedicated to those who died was unveiled at the site.
Pania Walton Seventy-six years ago, a passenger train bound for Dunedin crashed, killing twenty-one people and forever changing the lives of many others. One of those people was Stoke resident Elizabeth Coleman. The train crash caused the death of Elizabeth’s father and eldest brother, and injury to another brother; and a life time of trauma for Elizabeth. Now Elizabeth has written a book about her experiences. It Doesn’t Take a War: A Life Forever Changed by The Hyde Railway Crash is a remarkable story of hu- Elizabeth Coleman man resilience and the power of community to overcome adversity. Elizabeth, a grandmother who is married to Dusty and is mother to Julia, Jane and Alister, says, “Writing this book has been a catharsis to my healing, and an attempt to break the chain by which pain is passed down the generations.” The book launch will be in the Constance Barnicoat Room at Richmond Library on Thursday, 29 August at 5.30pm. Libraries Manager Glennis Coote says, “We are always inspired and impressed by the stories of our local community. We are very pleased to be hosting Elizabeth’s book launch and look forward to finding out more about her life experiences at the launch.”

Often the community patrol is the first responder to turn up to local situations and this generous act has meant that if there is a cardiac emergency and the patrol is on hand, it’s quite possible that a life will be saved. It’s also interesting to note that the average age of residents in this area also corresponds to the age group that is likely to experience a higher incidence of medical emergency.

House of Travel helps school in Fiji Bruno Saia Reporter
bruno@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Local owner-operators from the travel agency House of Travel went to Fiji for a conference and chose to do something different while they were there. They decided to help one of the schools during their visit to the country. “All the House of Travel owneroperators gather every year in Fiji for a conference and we decided that one of the things we wanted to do was to give back locally”, says Amanda Radovanovich, owner-operator of House of Travel Richmond. According to Amanda, the group of approximately one hundred owner-operators got their hands dirty doing something good for those children. “We decided before we went to Fiji that we would be helping out a local school”, says Amanda. “So we provided the painting, the

and included building benches under the trees and large bookcases for the children. The volunteers donated goods
for the school as well, which were shared with other schools in the region. “There were more then they
could use”, says Amanda. “The children and the school staff from the school were absolutely thrilled”. “It was a small and remote school and they came to meet us, they sang to us when we arrived as a welcome and then they told us how important it was for them”, she says. “Making some kind of difference as we travel and giving back is very important to us as a business and as a company as well”. “It reflects our values when we can give back to the local community”. Clients who also want to help are able to purchase an educational kit which is available at House of Travel Richmond. It costs $10 and will be delivered to schools in Fiji. All the money gathered with the educational kits sales are also destinated to help those schools in Fiji. House of Travel Richmond is located at 224 Queen St.
Arts festival aims to expand Charles Anderson The Nelson Arts Festival aims to become the festival for the whole top of the South Island with events expanding across the region. The festival programme was officially launched last week at Pic’s Peanut Butter World. It is the first time that the festival has been under the umbrella of a new trust, rather than the Nelson City Council. Director Charlie Unwin said that it was the right move for the festival, which was now in its 25th year. It is also Charlie’s last festival having
been involved with it for almost a decade. He revealed that some of the events would also be performed in Mapua, Richmond and Blenheim. This was a move to become recognised as the arts festival for the whole Te Tau Ihu region. Charlie said there were events from all over the world coming to Nelson - including the USA, Germany, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand, as well as spotlighting Nelson’s own Bhutanese, Colombian and Sri Lankan communities. Highlights of the 2019 programme include the charming tale of Mama
and her unexpected new best friend in Still Life with Chickens; the powerhouse sass of Tami Neilson; the gentle wonder of theatre for babies with Up and Away; the stunning prowess of Footnote New Zealand Dance’s The Clearing; the all-ages slapstick hilarity of Kaput; the charm of Witi Ihimaera speaking about his second memoir, Native Son; and the non-stop wit, energy and yodelling of the tenacious Topp Twins, who were at the very first festival in 1995. That full programme is available at www.nelsonartsfestival.nz and in the Nelson App.
Nelson Matters
Parliament last week considered two important Nelson petitions. Daphne Steven’s petition on the closure of Stoke Kiwibank’s branch was supported by over 2,000 Nelsonians. She highlighted how essential a bank service was to her independence and how unrealistic it was for her to learn internet banking at 93 years of age. She challenged Kiwibank executives to join her with her walking frame for the three hour return bus and walking trip to Kiwibank’s Nelson branch. Kiwibank advised the closure is to proceed on 15 October and confirmed the Government, who owns Kiwibank, supported it. This is very damaging for Labour’s support in
Stoke. Labour promised to expand services in the regions and to put people before profit. They are doing the opposite. The petitioners were particularly angry at NZ First. Their MP, Shane Jones has publicly lambasted banks like Westpac, ANZ and BNZ for closing regional branches. We asked Kiwibank if Mr Jones, Associate State Owned Enterprises Minister, had raised the issue of Kiwibank closing branches. They said he had not. This hypocrisy is extraordinary. I am critical of NZ Post and Kiwibank for misleading Parliament. They told the Select Committee last year that they would consult
communities over any changes in services. There was no consultation. Kiwibank, NZ Post and MPs from Labour, NZ First and the Greens all refused to attend last November’s huge public meeting in Stoke. My hope is that Parliament requires these state companies to properly consult affected communities in future. National has made that important commitment. The petition has helped retain NZ Post services. Hardy Street Pharmacy is to take over the Putaitai Street premises and it will include a postal agency. I hope, with Greypower’s support, to find a bank prepared to provide some sort of face to face service in Stoke.

The second Nelson petition was from Karen Dow. She lost her 23 year old son Matthew in the horrific Appleby car crash on New Year’s Eve 2017, caused by a drugged driver off her face on methamphetamine and cannabis. I am in awe of Karen’s strength in championing the cause of getting drugged drivers off our roads. She has gained support of many other families around New Zealand who have lost loved ones to drugged drivers. The annual number of fatalities from drugged driving has soared from 14 to 79 in the last five years. It now exceeds the toll from drunk driving. We could save 50 lives a year if we adopted random road-
side drug testing like in Australia and the UK. The petitioner was angry that Labour, New Zealand First and the Greens voted against a bill introducing a similar system in New Zealand in 2018. Mrs Dow was particularly cross that Green MP and Road Safety Minister Julie Anne Genter rejected official advice recommending it. The Greens argued roadside saliva testing is too intrusive. Mrs Dow also worries that Colorado has seen road fatalities from drugged drivers double since they liberalised cannabis. I commend these petitioners. My job is to ensure Parliament heeds their message. Advt.

Bring your home back to life Renovating can refer to making something new, or bringing something back to life. When renovating your home, we understand it can be hard to know where to begin. Working with the experienced team at Colourplus will ensure you achieve results you’ll love for many years to come. Offering a comprehensive design service, Trish and the team will work with you through the many options available to help you select paint colours, wallpapers, fabrics and blinds that reflect your style and budget. Even if you are renovating room by room as your budget allows, think of your home as a whole, and make sure there is flow between spaces old and new by using a complementary colour pallette. Consider the architectural style of the house, lighting, size, properties and functions of a room when considering colours and finishes. A small room will not necessarily feel larger just by painting it a light colour; natural light and ceiling height also play an important part.

Vintage cars expo in Wakefield Gavin Hill and his Rover will be at the Classic and Collectable Car Show in Wakefield on Sunday 1st of September.” I’m part of Higgins Park Club and also part of the Rover Car Club, which is based at Higgins Park. We’ve got a good committee out there and a good membership that we are organising along with the help of Higgins Park. Gavin restored Trevor’s car which has only been on the road about 6 months. But he enjoys driving his own Rover at the end of the day to relax. “You do get a lot of looks. This is probably my 6th or 7th Rover, the others were basic restorations but this one has gone over the top”.
Trevor Carston (President of the Rover Car Club) who’s own recently restored 1912 Rover Landaulette says he’s more “a restorer than a driver”. He hopes not just enthusiasts turn up for the event in September, but members of the public too. They will see a lot of cars, all different makes, Ford, Holden, Mini, Jaguar, because it’s a gathering of different clubs in the area.” There will be a sausage sizzle, cold food, hot and cold drinks all available from 11am. The event is at Higgins Heritage Park, Pigeon Valley, Wakefield, gates open at 10am, cars $5, driver and passengers free. Motorcycles $2.

Next month, from the 14th to the 22nd of September, it’s Conservation Week, but Richmond Library thinks the environment is important enough to spend a whole month finding out more about this beautiful world we live in. So they have organised a range of informative talks which are designed to broaden your understanding and awareness of environmental issues. For example, Tasman District Council’s Senior Environmental Resource Scientist, Trevor James, will give a talk about freshwater fish and the latest discoveries of the cryptic creatures of our waterways. Forest and Bird write that most New Zealanders know about our whitebait and our eels, but we actually have more than 50 species of native freshwater fish. They are secretive and fascinating, but sadly they are also in serious trouble!” So put the date in your diary and come to find out more about them with Trevor James, Trevor’s talk is free and everyone is welcome.
High School students from the Top of the South region will get together on 15th August for the VAST Dance Festival. The presentations will take place at Theatre Royal Nelson. Krystal Hollis is part of the Year 13 class at Waimea College and will perform at the festival for the third time. “VAST is really cool, it’s a full day thing”, she says. “I’m a regular performer, so I’m used to it, but for some people this can be their first time, so it’s a great opportunity to perform in front of a big audience”, she says. The activities are divided into two sessions. In the morning the students have the opportunity to take part in dance workshops. In the afternoon they rehearse on stage for the evening performance for the community. “This year there is salsa, belly dancing, and yoga workshops”, says Krystal. She remembers how important the interaction with other students is. “Then you have rehearsals, so you practise the dances and watch other schools do theirs”, she says. Pauline Farley is the Arts Coordinator at Waimea College, and she explains that VAST intends to showcase students from secondary schools who do dance classes as part of the curriculum. “It’s a non-competitive performance in the evening and during the day

The Tennis Hot Shots Schools programme is the national starter initiative for New Zealand children aged 5-12. A total of 5,330 pupils in 40 schools around the region can enjoy tennis classes throughout the year. From Murchison to Collingwood to Hira - nearly every school in the Nelson and Tasman regions are part of it. The programme uses a ‘learning through play’ approach integrated with the school physical education curriculum to develop each child’s basic ball skills - hitting, throwing, catching, and exercise. Five coaches deliver the programme in areas surrounding their clubs and Ngaire Calder is one of them. She works with the children at Brightwater School. “We get together with them every year, so we’ve got a good relationship, we

The children have three lessons a year in each school and then they are invited to attend the classes at the Tennis Club closest to them.
“This is the third lesson that they received today and after that they are invited back to the local club, which is the Waimea West
Club, for their fourth lesson after school,” says Ngaire. Tennis Hot Shots is just for children. Smaller courts, shorter racquets, and softer balls mean that they can play a proper game of tennis from the moment they step on to the court “It’s fun”, says 7-year old player Otis Taylor. “We are doing shots and we are trying to squish the ball and then he hits it back to me and I try to squish the ball, then we keep doing that over and over”. Asked about how he describes the tennis lessons to his parents, Otis says: “I tell them that I’m very good”. The Brightwater School teacher, Sherryn Lines, approves of the idea. “They love it”, she says. “They think they are like real tennis players and it helps their coordination and it’s good to get them out and about and moving”. The Tennis Hot Shots Schools programme was launched nationally by Tennis NZ in October 2013 and started in the Nelson Tasman region in 2014.

Tight contest for Richmond F45 Amy Cunningham
Both teams executed a determined effort throughout the tightly-contested match between Stoke NBS and Richmond F45 at Saxton Stadium on Thursday night, but Stoke ultimately came out on top. Richmond F45 stormed out of the blocks with four early goals. Stoke NBS found it hard to connect on the scoreboard, the height of Richmond F45’s defensive unit (Maddie Spring WD, Amy Cunningham GD, Sarah Steele GK) creating difficulty. Tia van Diepen settled in early for Richmond F45, combining well with Harriet Ogilvie at GA. Basic
errors started showing towards the end of the first quarter, but Richmond F45 managed to retain a 13 - 9 lead. Ogilvie and van Diepen showed good understanding to start the second quarter, creating effective space to welcome long ball feeds. Stoke NBS increased intensity scoring a run of three goals, and with Richmond F45 guilty of errors, Stoke NBS pushed to within one point at half-time (Richmond F45 20 - Stoke NBS 19). With changes made at the half-time break, Richmond F45 needed to establish immediate connections. Both teams were relentless in their ef-
forts, with strong attacking through the court; Rebekah Shepherd finding her shooters range and space well. Kat Jones moved back to her familiar GD position, but Richmond F45 continued to make simple mistakes, allowing Stoke NBS to stay within an arm’s reach, closing the quarter 30 - 29. Jones and Steele were formidable in the fourth quarter applying defensive pressure on the Stoke NBS shooters. Ruby Jensen and Shepherd punched the circle edge well, however Amber Healey was outstanding for Stoke NBS, staying calm and collected under immense pressure to

Mako start season in emphatic fashion Peter Jones
The Tasman Mako matched the thunder and lightning rolling around Lansdowne Park on Saturday afternoon with a storming performance to kick off their Mitre 10 Cup season in style. A handy Wellington side was put to the sword in convincing style, the home side defying the inclement conditions to cross for seven tries, while restricting their opponents to a paltry eight points through some bone-crunching defence. As an opening performance, it would be hard to ask for more from the Mako. This was a clinical showing, the home side setting the tone in the first quarter. Their forwards bossed the breakdown, ruled at scrum time and made big metres through lineout drives, leading to tries by Liam Squire, whose physical presence has been missed, Andrew Makalio and Tyrel Lomax.
Eager chasers allowed the Mako to employ an effective kicking game, playing ball in their opponent’s territory, forcing mistakes from a clearly rattled capital crew. Just when the Lions began to gain some belief it was snatched away through a game turning point. After cleverly creating a clear tryscoring opportunity on the right wing their final pass was intercepted by Mako skipper David Havili who sprinted 80m to score a “14-point try”, bagging his side’s bonus point and shutting the door on any hopes Wellington had of heading for halftime with momentum.Interestingly, if Havili had not managed to reel in the intercepted pass cleanly it is likely he would have spent the next 10 minutes in the sin bin as Wellington were odds on to score, but fortune favoured the brave skipper. As expected, the Lions came out with renewed determination after oranges, but were again met by resolute defence, led by workhorse
Ethan Blackadder who has obviously returned to camp with a desire to play big minutes after being sparsely used by the Crusaders. In the same camp are inside backs Finlay Christie and Mitch Hunt, who both relished their starting roles and opportunity to shift the team around the park with well-placed kicking.
It wasn’t a day for outside backs, but Havili and Will Jordan did everything asked of them under Wellington’s aerial bombardment. However, it was a day for cohesive, ruthless forward play and Andrew Goodman got just that as he racked up his first NPC win as Mako co-coach. The home side’s game plan also
contributed to a low error rate from the Mako who were content to shift the pressure of ball retention to their rivals. “We were comfortable without the ball … putting them under pressure in the air then trusting our defence, we didn’t try to play long phases with the ball, especially in the first half ”, he says.

Wanderers Sports Club Report JAB rugby takes centre stage for Wanderers The club and school rugby season is coming to an end, and the focus swings more towards the Mako and Mako Women’s teams locally and the All Blacks and Black Ferns nationally, although at Junior level the final rounds of matches at Mini Mako (under 6 and under 7), Hammerheads (under 8 to under 10) and Great Whites at under 11 to under 13, all played their final organised contests at clubs across the Tasman region. Following their victory last week, the Waimea College under-16 team travelled to Blenheim to play the top-ranked Marlborough Boys’ College team, where the opportunity to measure the progress of the group was keenly anticipated. Having won 50-5 in the previous encounter, Marlborough started
well and scored a breakaway try from an early overlap created and took a 7-0 lead after only two minutes. However, there is a growth in the Waimea side this year, and the improved attitude and understanding on defence, combined with some extremely good attack play through good close support and adventurous off-loading, saw them actually carry the game to MBC and eventually pressure exerted allowed Flynn Goeddert to swoop on a dropped ball and show a clean pair of heels as he scored and converted to tie the game up 7-7. In an even contest for the next 20 minutes both teams experienced periods of dominance, but it was MBC who scored another breakout try from halfway and a 14-7 lead, before a fine passage of
continuity play by Waimea freed Jack Patin on the right wing for an excellent team try in the corner. Unfortunately, the kick was unsuccessful but at 14-12 MBC knew that this match was a fitting semi-final and not the walkover that many had expected. The match was being played at a good pace with very good skills being displayed by both teams, in conditions which were not ideal at all, and despite the movement and continuity neither team could gain an ascendency. Sadly for Waimea, right on the stroke of halftime, a hack through by MBC was not able to be covered up and another try and conversion saw MBC go into the break up by 21-12. Without doubt this was the best 35 minutes of rugby Waimea had produced this season, recognis-
ing the team motto of being better each week. The second half continued as a contest, with MBC just gaining enough dominance in the slippery conditions to get over the gain line, despite some strong defence by Waimea, where Cameron Balck, Bailey Basalaj, Josh Flowers, Callan Little, Thomas Bailey and Noah Fraser set the standard. There was an inevitability about MBC’s play and tries were created. Three came from five metre scrums. In each case Waimea had stopped the original surge, but after the departure through injury of hooker Taine Wastney, who showed real courage in continuing albeit on one leg, the Waimea scrum was severely depleted, and MBC were good enough to ex-
ploit the situation. At no stage did Waimea fold though, and for those who had made the journey “over the hill” it was particularly pleasing to see the boys seriously challenge the top team in the grade. The MBC coach was extremely complimentary to the team after the match, acknowledging the improvement and development of the team, stating that they had taken part in a worthy semi-final. There are many little contests in any game of rugby but only one score is recorded and that score was definitely unkind to Waimea on Saturday as they won a number of contests during the match, at least on a 60/40 basis, and but for a 5 minute period in each half where MBC scored two converted tries each time, the final score was 43-12 to MBC.

WAKEFIELD SCOUTS OFF FOR 10 DAYS OF FUN & ADVENTURE Later this year, an enthusiastic group of youth who belong to Wakefield Scouts are heading up to the 10-day National Jamboree taking place at Mystery Creek in Hamilton on December 27th to January 7th. Wakefield Scouts are combining together with Tamaha (Mapua), Stoke, Brightwater and Enner Glynn Scouts to form one troupe called the Tasman Tacos. There will be around 3000 scouts attending the Jamboree from many different regions around New Zealand, including 129 scouts from Nelson. The Scouts will get to do things like abseiling, a hot lap in V8 Supercars, crafts, cooking, navigate a muddy obstacle course and have fun riding motorbikes. The chairman of the Wakefield Scouts committee says it’s great that all 5 Scouts from Wakefield are able to go to the Jamboree. He says they all love getting outside to do activities like kayaking, are always keen to try something new and would do the Supercar hot lap right now if they could!

Move to smaller glass recycling crates We’re reducing the size of our glass recycling crates to ensure the safety of our kerbside collectors, who have raised concerns about the weight of the existing crates when full. The change will only affect you if you need a new, replacement or extra crate. There is a charge for replacing an existing crate or purchasing a new crate, of $20.90.

Flush your taps Some plumbing fittings have the potential to allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water that is standing in the fittings for several hours. Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends you flush a mugful of water from your drinking-water tap each morning before use to remove any metals which may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings. We recommend this simple precaution for all households, including those on public and private water supplies. Visit moh.govt.nz (search for drinking water) for further information.

ROAD CLOSURES
Join our climate change community consultation.
Proposed road closures
Tasman is experiencing stormier weather as climate change hits harder, and we’re preparing our communities for new weather patterns, rising sea levels and changing coastal hazards. We’ve been working on a project to prepare Tasman to adapt to this new normal.
Applicant: Motueka Events Charitable Trust
For more information visit tasman.govt.nz/feedback.
We're proposing to change how we manage 'pokie' machine numbers in Tasman and introduce a sinking lid policy. Our aim – to minimise harmful gambling The proposed draft policy is intended to provide a level of control that will minimise harmful gambling associated with class 4 gaming machines (sometimes called pokies) in the District. In practice, the draft policy prohibits the gaming societies that own and operate the gaming machines from increasing the number of gaming machines they are licensed to operate. The policy also continues the prohibition on transferring of any class 4 venue licence within the District. Have your say You can view the draft policy online at tasman.govt.nz/ feedback, or at any council office or library. Submissions close 4.30 pm on Friday 13 September 2019.
Submissions are open between 14 August and 16 September.
Hope:
The engagement programme runs until 13 September. It is the first opportunity to talk about the effect of sea level rise for our communities, but it won’t be the last; this long term planning will take several years to complete.

As a starting point for the conversation, we’ve mapped land that may be affected by sea level rise. The maps show a range of scenarios, as well as the effect of higher tides caused by storms, areas of historic coastal erosion (sediment loss) and accretion (sediment gain), and the presence of coastal structures such as stopbanks, walls and rock revetments.

We are intending to grant a new five-year lease to the Menzshed Tapawera, located in the former Tapawera Scout Hall on Tapawera Memorial Park Recreation Reserve, 60 Main Road, Tapawera.

The new 45 litre crates will have the capacity for 9 – 11.5 kgs of glass, and will reduce the handling risks for kerbside collection staff and residents.
While the rate and magnitude of future sea level rise is uncertain, we do know that it will happen. This will have increasingly urgent implications for coastal development and infrastructure, such as roads, housing, and boating. There will also be environmental, cultural and social effects.

Existing 55 and 60 litre crates can weigh up to 21 kilograms when they’re full of glass. New Zealand best practice recommends 10 – 14 kilograms as a safe weight for the repetitive lifting our kerbside bin collectors have to do.

From there, in a straight line to the top of the Rosedale Saddle, then to the south-western end of Wills Road and along Wills Road to where it meets the Inland Highway.

The enrolment of out of zone students is governed by the provisions of the Education Act 1989. The enrolment scheme, which includes a precise description of the home zone, may be viewed at the school office and will be included with the College’s enrolment form. Mum, you were someone we could talk to that no-one can replace, You were someone we could laugh with until tears ran down out face, You were someone we thought more of each year came to an end, You were our dearest Mother and also our dearest friend. Thank you for the memories that are your and ours alone, for they recall so many special moments that only we have known. Always loved, always missed. Forever in our hearts. Kath, Pam and Mark

With respect we wish to announce the start of Mikes next journey as our Incredibly Special Man is now at Rest among the stars after a peaceful passing in Stoke, Nelson at Tasman Rest Home and Dementia Care on 02.08.2019, aged 66. Admired & loved 2nd son of Murray & Pat Both deceased. Treasured precious brother & brother-in-law of Brian & Anita, Murray (dec) & Marg, Rose & Terry, Bernee & Tyrone, Pete & Robyn, Maria & Brian. Adored most Special Uncle & Great Uncle to all of his nieces & nephews. Much loved husband and mate of Chrissie, loved dad of Zack, Nikita & their partners. Blenheim and Australia. Mike had a varied and colourful life with experiences well beyond his physical 66 years ex-Australian Army, Chef Extraordinaire, Gunsmith & Harmonica Wizz to name a few. He truly was a Jack of all Trades. Our heartfelt thanks to the entire very special and dedicated Team of Staff from both Alexander Hospital, Richmond & Tasman Rest Home and Dementia Care, Stoke for your continued Respect, Love, Care & Encouragement of Mike all of which made his life so much brighter. Michael keep Rowing your Boat Hard and Strong until we meet again. Keep Shining Full and Bright, we promise to keep all the Bananas ready and ripe XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX FOREVER. At Mikes Request a Private Cremation has taken place.
