Survivor honoured at Armistice Commemorations for the 100year anniversary of the Armistice signing went off with a bang as Tapawera hosted the nostalgic event near the site of a Regional Military Training Camp. People came from far and wide to attend the 3-day event which has

been many months in the making. Even a tortoise named Torty flew down for the occasion. Torty was brought to New Zealand in a suitcase by kiwi medic Stewart Little. After finding her wounded in Salonica, Stewart nursed her back

to health and sneaked her into his backpack to board the SS Marama for home. She is New Zealand’s last remaining survivor of WW1 and was honoured at the event by being made a life member of the Tapawera RSA. Richmond Waimea RSA presi-

dent Ross Norgate says it was great that Torty was there because it gave the kids something to relate to from a century ago. “It’s unbelievable that there is still a living creature from the end of the first world war.” Chris Little, Stewart’s grandson,

says his grandfather would have been ‘tickled pink’ about the honour. Organiser Sarah Arnold says the number of people reconnecting with family members and making links to the war and the Tapawera camp was increasing.

“No, not really. The way it is now is fine.”

“That’s a hard one. It should be everyone’s personal choice.”

“It’s a great idea so yes, I do think we should ban it.”

“You could choose certain areas to have it banned but I don’t think it’s fair to totally discriminate against smokers.”

Whitebait released locally in a conservation effort Amy Russ Local resource scientist Trevor James, from Tasman District Council, has been studying the behaviour of whitebait (inanga) in a response to the reported decline of New Zealand freshwater fish. “Seventy-four percent of New Zealand freshwater fish species are in decline,” says NIWA freshwater ecology technician Peter Williams, “and upstream barriers are stopping them from getting up to the habitat that they need to complete their life-cycle.” Earlier, in September, a school of 400 brightly dyed whitebait was released into Reservoir Creek culvert to see if the recent TDC improvements to the creek were helping. Trevor

the specialists. They developed the experimental method to ensure that we repeat that methodology precisely. “I think there is some more work to do. In future experiments we will try using slightly more mature inanga as they will be the ones making it up as far as Hill Street and are more able swimmers. The experiment is a ‘work in progress’, adds Trevor. “We will be extending on this study over the next couple of months to try to get the inanga all the way up the Hill St culvert. They have got part the way and we think we understand what it will take to get them further. The learnings from this study will be applied, not just across our region, but across the country.”

WIL locks in $11.5M toward dam To secure a 100-year water supply for Tasman and Nelson through the Waimea Community Dam, a group of local businesses has committed to invest $11 million in Waimea Irrigators Limited. Waimea Irrigators Limited (WIL) issued a Replacement Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to shareholders on Monday, October 15, detailing its additional investment of $11.5 million in the $102 million Dam project. In August it was announced that the cost of the project increased by $26 million. Subsequently, Tasman District Council (TDC) approved a revised funding proposal that included a greater WIL contribution. Through an investor vehicle and additional in loan funding from Crown Irrigation Investments Limited (CIIL), WIL can meet its commitment to the project. WIL Board Chair Murray King says it has raised the capital from selling shares in WIL to a new ‘investor ve-

hicle’ - made up of a group of local, inter-generational family businesses on the Waimea Plains. Currently negotiations are being finalised and remain confidential, but all commitments have been made. “Fourteen businesses will collectively purchase 2,000 Convertible Notes in WIL at a cost of $5,500 per share, the same price our share subscribers have paid for Water Shares,” says Murray. “These family businesses have been around for generations. They have invested in our communities, are committed to Tasman and Nelson, and want to stay here and flourish. They need water security and they’ve really stepped up enormously see this project through. Initially, the $11 million was going to be received from a single investor. The situation changed in recent weeks, Murray says, when, during investor due diligence, WIL determined there was too much risk in the proposal.

Sujon Berryfruits has won the “Best New Individual Brand Award” at the Asian Branding and Franchising Association Awards (ABFA Awards), held in Hong Kong on October 15. “For our relatively unknown kiwi brand and unknown food type to win this award is a very good start for our Asian export programme and a real credit to the work of OneNZ,” says founding owner of Sujon, John Gibb. OneNZ is Sujon’s newlyappointed Asian agent who entered them in the awards. The agent is a Hong Kong-based

natural foods distributor that sources unique foods from New Zealand for supply to health-conscious consumers in Hong Kong and China. After new research was published by Chichester University in the UK revealing Sujon’s powder natural recovery benefits, OneNZ became interested. Sujon was the first company to market the natural health values blackcurrants have in powder form. The powder is now well-known in New Zealand where it is primarily used by athletes for muscle exercise re-

covery. With naturally high occurring levels of anthocyanins and vitamin C, it also appeals to those consumers wanting an extra immunity boost. Sujon CEO John Molyneux says that the powder has significant export potential, especially in Asia, but the key was finding the right agent representation in such a vast consumer market. OneNZ entered the Sujon Blackcurrant Powder in the newly-created ABFA Awards as part of their own promotional strategy for the greater Asian marketplace.

Wakefield School celebrations draw huge crowds Amy Russ

Wakefield School kicked off their 175th anniversary celebrations on Friday, November 9, with a ‘super showcase extravaganza’. Principal Peter Verstappen says preparations have built up tremendously during the last term. “The last three months, the celebrations have been a real focus for the school. Students have studied the mural on the Wakefield Pharmacy wall and used it as inspiration for their costumes. They have studied the train that used to run through the village,

the sawmilling history and the Baigent family – from which of course, settler Mary Ann Baigent started the school originally – amongst other historic influences.” The students performed to a packed-out hall on Friday as they re-enacted the history of the school through letters and memoirs of past students and community members. Deputy principal Scott McKenzie was chuffed with the turnout, saying, “we had a really nice steady flow throughout the day, it was a great chance to meet new people and listen to their stories and how they

have connected with people they haven’t seen for years. We have got quite an archived collection of stories now about the school’s history, all recorded as it was told, by the people.” Sonia Emerson, one of the organisers on the 175th committee, says it was an honour to be a part of and the event came together nicely. “Overall, the event was fantastic. It was a really great feeling to wake up on Saturday to fine weather! It was wonderful seeing young and old celebrating together and people rekindling their old friendships and connections.”

School teachers to strike on Thursday Primary and Intermediate teachers and principals are preparing to walk off the job on Thursday, November 15, as part of nationwide rolling strikes after the NZEI (teachers union) rejected the latest offer. The NZEI have lodged claims for a 16 percent pay rise and employment of special needs coordinators. After the first strike, the Ministry offered 9.3 percent over three years across the board.

Climbers rescued from Mt Franklin The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was called around 4pm on Tuesday, November 6, after two climbers activated their emergency locator beacon. One of the climbers, a 42-year-old from Wellington, sustained injuries during their descent on Mt Franklin in the Nelson Lakes National Park. It was while negotiating a steep chute that the accident occurred. The climbers were winched to safety and the injured man taken to Nelson Hospital where he was treated and discharged the following day.

Three-car crash in Appleby Three cars were involved in a crash at Appleby Bridge on Wednesday, November 7 around 7.40am, bringing traffic to a standstill. Police and St John Ambulance attended and one person was treated for minor injuries. Northbound traffic was blocked while a tow truck was ordered to remove the vehicles from the road. The traffic block-up affected Brightwater as traffic was diverted to Waimea West Rd and down the town’s main street after 8am, causing a major traffic jam.

The PLAN to raise awareness of teen drinking Amy Russ Reporter

amy@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Health Action Trust and the Public Health Service are working together to educate and support parents and caregivers to responsibly manage alcohol in their teenagers’ lives. As part of their ‘The PLAN’ campaign, in collaboration with Waimea College PTA, they invited the parenting community to attend a free presentation at the college entitled ‘Keeping teens safe around alcohol’. The event, which was aimed at parents of teens aged 12 – 17 years old, was to help educate people with tools, tips and interactive resources on how to responsibly manage teen drinking. The major project has been three years in the making and project partner and health promoter for the Health Action Trust, Rosey Duncan, says teen drinking is a real issue and it is important to raise awareness of the topic. “The earlier teens start drinking the more likely it is that their drinking will become problematic in the future. The more likely it is they will go on to drink harmfully in their teens and adult life.

ers Hilary Genet (who works in mental health for Public Health Service, Nelson Marlborough Health) and Carol McIntosh (Alcohol, Public Health Service, Nelson Marlborough Health) and says they had a lot of help along the way with the evolution of the

project, including help from parents, in developing and trialling their range of interactive resources designed to support parents to make a family plan around alcohol. “We talked with local parents about their concerns and what

would help them support their teens. The resources include our webpage, legal information, Facebook posts planned for the summer and fridge magnets.” Parents at the Waimea College event say they felt it was important to attend to learn how to approach the subject with their teens and to learn coping strategies. Chair of Waimea College PTA, Mel Welch, says, “the Waimea College PTA like to have the right people and resources to put forward presentations that are relevant and current to parents as well as the wider community. “The alcohol presentation was especially important as we reach the end of the year and students like to celebrate heading into summer. The PLAN was a great opportunity to give parents hints and tips on how to help their teen be more responsible around alcohol. “Alcohol is more available in homes than any other drug and doesn’t get the attention it deserves when it comes to teenagers and the drinking culture we have here in New Zealand. Generous Good Sort a winner Amy Russ This months Richmond Stihl Shop ‘Good Sorts’ winner is long-time Table Tennis coach John Jary. Colin Bowden has known John for around forty years and says he has nominated John for the $100 voucher because of his unwavering dedication to coaching. “I think John is just a great guy who is generous with his time and has done a huge amount for children with Table Tennis. Even though he is getting

advanced in age it doesn’t slow him down at all.” John has compiled a book about Table Tennis in Nelson Tasman and the role he has played in the sport, and as well as coaching at the Nelson Table Tennis Club at the Saxton Field complex has his own patented table ready for set-up at Oakwoods Retirement Village. The 82-year-old ex-builder became involved with Table Tennis in 1972 and says the interest stemmed from a need to break the cycle. “I was a workaholic and just

knew I had to do something else with my time. I enjoy spending time with the children and coaching them to be better players. “One of them represents the South Island in the Under 11’s.” If you know anyone in the Waimea Weekly distribution area who you think is a Good Sort, let the team know with your nomination, and they could be in the draw for a $100 Richmond Stihl Shop voucher. Getting set up for photovoltaic power generation On a sunny day, photovoltaic power generation systems (PV) connected to our network produce enough electricity to run about 800 average sized houses.

It’s important for us to know when new PV systems are planned for connection to the network because we need to make sure the equipment meets required technical standards and is set correctly to maintain a good level of power quality for everyone using the network. We also need to know where PV systems are so we can keep line workers safe when they undertake network maintenance.

At last, it’s happening. Our process to help guide you through getting a PV system connected to the network is as follows: Stage 1: Before you purchase a system, check our website to understand how the application process works and what sort of things you need to think about, such as whether you want to connect to the network, whether the system meets the required technical standards, and the size of the system. Stage 2: If you decide you want to connect the system to the network, fill in a pre-purchase application form. This form is on our website at www.networktasman.co.nz/solar. We use the information provided on this form to check that the part of the network you want to connect to has the capacity to handle the power from your system and to make sure it meets the required technical standards. We will also pass your details on to your energy retailer so that they can change your electricity meter so it can handle the exporting of surplus PV power to the network. Stage 3: Once your system is installed and before it is connected to the network, we need a final sign-off from an electrical inspector to say it’s safe and that it meets the required standards. Once we confirm that everything is in order, we will let you know that it’s safe to connect it to the network. Your installer or electrician will help with arranging these things. If you are thinking about investing in a PV system and you want to connect it to the network, check out our website at www.networktasman.co.nz/solar, give us a call on 0800 508 098, or email us at info@networktasman.co.nz.

Sheep dogs display their style at A&P Show Amy Russ Preparations are underway for Richmond Parks upcoming A&P Show at the end of this month. Part of the weekend’s line-up is a regular favourite, the sheep dog trials. The trials will be held on both show days and one of the key organisers, Colin Gibbs, says the course will give the public a taste of how things are done for the annual Trans-Tasman Wayleggo Cup test between New Zealand and Australian dog trial competitors. “This year we have a similar type course set up as what we would normally do for the Trans-Tasman, but on a slightly smaller scale.”

The New Zealand Sheepdog Trial Association Trans-Tasman Test Series has been running for 30 years and, for fans, it remains a highlight on the calendar. Next year New Zealand will be hosting the event and Colin is hopeful the kiwis will maintain their five-year winning streak. Past president and a life member of Richmond Park, Colin says one of the New Zealand test team, Ian Herbert from Wakefield, will be competing at the upcoming A&P Show event. Ian helped his team win against Australia and bring the Wayleggo Cup back to New Zealand. “Each dog trial can take around 15 minutes per competitor. This year will be mainly Nelson and Marlborough competitors. We

will have a presentation for completion on Sunday afternoon.” Colin comes from a long line of sheep dog handlers. “I have done it all my life, I followed in my dad’s footsteps. My dad did it and my grandad did it. I enjoy it because it challenges your wits. You have got animals that all have a mind of their own. It is not a physical race, you have to know how stock will respond. Everytime it is always a challenge.” The Nelson A&P Show is on the weekend of November 24 & 25, from 9am to 5pm Saturday and 9am to 4pm Sunday at the Richmond Showgrounds. Tickets are available from Haven Motors, More FM, Richmond Mall and Bowater Toyota Nelson & Motueka.

175 years of Christian worship Many people know the classic old church with the funny trees on the Waimea West straight. It is a place chosen by many to celebrate weddings and other family celebrations. Rich in heritage, it continues as a vibrant church with Sunday morning services each week at 8:30am. St Michael’s Anglican Church is celebrating 175 years of worship on the site in Waimea West - the oldest in the Nelson region. The first settlers arrived in Nelson in February 1842 and by the end of year nearly 100 people had settled in Waimea West at “The Village”, as it was called. Early accounts tell of families making their way up the Waimea River by boat, probably disembarking at Cotterell’s Landing in Appleby and from there they walked. The plains were a mixture of fern, swamp and patches of bush. They set to work to build a dwelling and to cultivate the land for food. The settlers soon felt the need to have a place of worship. The Rev. C Reay, Nelson’s first Church of England clergyman, held services for over a year in John Kerr’s barn. The Rev. C.W. Saxton also officiated

from time to time and he offered an acre of land where the church now stands. A subscription raised 35pounds, with many promises of labour and timber, etc. The balance was provided by The Bishop of New Zealand, George Selwyn. It was officially opened on 24th December,1843. In 1856 a meeting was held to form St Michael’s parish which covered Wakefield, Spring Grove (which Brightwater was called at that time) Waimea West and Waimea South, and to appoint a full time clergyman.- Rev Thomas Bowden. After 23 years the Church was becoming dilapidated so plans were put in place for a new building. The present building was opened on 13th of November 1867 by the Bishop of Nelson, Bishop Suter. On the 18th November at a 10am service we celebrate 150th birthday of St Michael’s and 175 Years as a Parish. The Bishop will be preaching and the service will be followed by a shared picnic lunch. After 175 years of Christian worship, the vision the founders of the church; being a witness to the district of the living God. We look forward to continuing this vision.

Cracker of a fireworks night Geoff Watson was the best of the locals, a point behind the 3NZ visitor Matt Sherlock from Canterbury. It was hard to keep up with all the action in the Stock Cars, but Levi Collier was hell bent on making a nuisance of himself while 31N Dylan Clarke’s night ended early when he was slammed into the wall by 85N Hamish Carter. The class of Keightley Teece shone through, taking the points on the night. Phil Krammer made his debut in the Super Stocks along with Ben Taylor returning for his first meeting. Dwayne Westley is fast getting to grips with his car and made good use of his front bumper in the final heat. The next meeting sees the Hydralink “War of the Wings” Sprintcars return with their first of two rounds scheduled for the season.

Jody Scott

Speedway Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

In the week leading up to the annual Milestone Homes Top of the South fireworks display on Saturday, November 3, the weather was threatening to put a damper on event night. But sunny Nelson lived up to its reputation as other tracks around the country succumbed to wind and rain. The huge crowds weren’t left waiting for long as the fireworks show started early on the track. The Streetstocks were into it from the get-go. Shannon Marr lost steering, putting Steve Thomas hard into the wall, with others caught up in the melee before even crossing the start line. Then it was the turn of the T.Q’s. Two rollovers increased their lead in the rollover tally, firstly

Dylan Clarke (31N) slammed into the wall by Hamish Carter (85N). Photo: Tom Laney/Imagepress. 58N Daniel Porter going belly up with a flat rear tyre before the end of his first lap. But that was outclassed by a spectacular wall climb by Darkie Armstrong in the final race when he clipped the rear tyre while trying to pass

a car, which sent him flying out towards the wall, throwing him up the concrete, rolling along the safety fence before landing in a heap back on the track. Brad Neiman smashed the lap record before, a lap later, Shane

Harwood bettered the time again. He was the fastest, but Neiman put two wins together to win the Dave Scott Memorial trophy. The Productions were contesting their first round of their club champs with some close racing.

Wakefield Village Hall to stage Nell Gwynn comedy Wakefield thespians are set to take the stage toward the end of this month as they produce the famed comedy, ‘Nell Gwynn’. Promising to be a night full of love, laughter and lots of entertainment by the Wakefield Country Players, the show took audiences by storm in its Shakespeare’s Globe London debut. Prepare to be transported to the flamboyant world of seventeenth-century London, dripping with decadent excess and bawdy amusements. The quick wit and exceptional beauty of Nell Gwynn, played by Lydia Dunne, who goes from selling oranges on the streets of London’s growing theatre district to performing on its stages, captures the hearts of audiences

and England’s King Charles II, played by Scott Frater. Thrust into the royal spotlight, the king’s mistress is dealt a new role as the nation’s sweetheart in this joyous song and dance-filled romantic comedy. Directed by Nelson’s wellknown Hugh Neill, the cast of 19 includes local talent Jen Amosa, Peter Verstappen and Joe Robinson. Five shows are scheduled with evening shows on the 23, 24, 30 November and December 1 as ‘Picnic shows’ where patrons banquet together bringing their own food, drink, crockery and utensils prior to the show. Tickets are $20 per adult and can be booked by phoning 541 8869 or emailing bookings@ countryplayers.org.nz

parents as they scramble to find care and supervision. This disruption in our schools brings the national total of workers who have walked off the job this year to over 30,000 in over 2,000 workplaces. That’s more in the last year than in the last 20 years combined. It is nurses, wharfies, midwives, teacher’s assistants, bus drivers and teachers as well as thousands of public servants working for ACC, IRD, Ministry of Justice and MBIE. 90% of the strikes are government employees or government funded services. The government even had the printing of its first budget disrupted by strikes.

The root cause of these strikes is Labour’s extravagant promises when they were in Opposition. Its policy stated that workers were being underpaid by $23 billion a year. They said workers deserved a 20% pay increase. Workers feel duped and understandably are angry with Labour now in Government saying they can only afford 3%. This is not credible when they are also boasting recent surpluses of $5.5 billion. The pay problem is also being compounded by the rising cost of living. Inflation is at the highest level in a decade with basic costs like fuel, rent and insurance sky-

All income groups under National gained with the average household gaining 15% or $14,000 better off over and above inflation. Strikes are disruptive and make us all poorer. The best way out of this mess is for Labour to be straight with the unions and workers. They need to apologise for the extravagant policy promises that they now cannot meet. They need to acknowledge the significant increases they are imposing on the costs of living. We need fair settlements that are affordable, end the disruption and which enable working families to get ahead. Advt.

rocketing. Labour has put the tax on petrol up three times and are proposing another three increases. The extra costs the Government is imposing on the insurance and housing sectors is flowing on to consumers. The risk under Labour’s economic policy is a return to the wage/price spiral of the past. Wages increased by 5% in the last year of the Clark Labour Government, but the inflation rate was also 5%, meaning no real improvement in incomes. National enabled households to get ahead by keeping inflation down to an average 1% per year over our nine years in government.

Nelson Matters NOW NOW

The wave of strike action this year is doing Nelson and New Zealand no good. It has disrupted exports from our port, patients getting operations and children getting an education. The latest notice of industrial action from midwives for later this month adds unnecessary stress for expectant mothers. The strikes this week hit Nelson’s 55 schools when 340 primary teachers walk off the job on Thursday. It is part of a nationwide rolling stoppage organised by the NZEI and is the second strike in schools following action in August. It means our 6,200 children lose another day of education and chaos for working

If you own a rental property in Richmond, Brightwater or Wakefield, Barbara Winter is the ideal person to call if you are considering having a Property Manager. Barbara has been a professional Property Manager in the Nelson–Tasman region for nearly 14 years now, which makes her one of the most experienced Property Managers in the business. “I love my job and have been fortunate to come over to Summit in February this year,” says Barbara. “I’m enjoying it 110 percent!” Prior to working for Summit Real Estate Richmond, Barbara’s role with another real estate firm helped grow her experience as a Property Manager. “Summit has the largest database of prospective, quality tenants in the region,” says Barbara. “We also have a comprehensive checking system – we can find the best person for your property. I am a proactive manager who will ensure your property is well looked after. I specialise in the Richmond, Brightwater, and country areas, and my colleagues cover the larger Nelson-Marlborough region.” If you are looking for an experienced worldly-wise Property Manager, give Barbara Winter a call on 021 279 2796. For more information visit, www.summit.co.nz When it comes to the care and maintenance of your trees, you can call on Nick Chambers, owner of Atom Tree Specialists for expert advice and services. Nick is a fully-qualified arborist and amenity horticulturalist with over 20 years experience working in New Zealand, Australia, UK and Ireland. Nick’s journey as a tree specialist began in 1994 when he was an apprentice amenity horticulturalist at the Nelson City Council working in parks, gardens and reserves. “During my time training I worked with some amazing guys who put me on the right path to being a professional Arborist or Tree Surgeon. The arborists I worked with during that time went on to do some important work in the industry nationally and internationally. I love Nelson – was brought up here, and combined with my exposure to how work practises are done in other countries, has created the person I am today – my eye for detail, work safety, efficiency and knowing what’s best for trees in their environment.” Atom Tree Specialists is a professional, friendly company offering the highest standard of tree felling, tree surgery and garden maintenance in Nelson and Marlborough. With a large, friendly staff we can cater for all your needs, whether it be a new home or an existing house. In the past 15 years, heat pump technology has changed dramatically along with people’s perception of the amount of heat required. Remember those old days of standing by an open fire getting ready for school while your bedroom had ice on the windows. Well, that’s all changed, with the ability to duct heating to every room or have individual heat pumps in all the areas to give you comfort and control. And remember, with a hot summer forecast, all you have to do is press a button and it will cool for you. We also offer expert advice on a ventilation system that will extract air from your house while heating new air being introduced from outside, goodbye condensation! Look at the Gree Special, no more kicking off the bed sheets on those sticky hot nights. Call us today or come and see our showroom, you might be surprised what we can achieve for you.

FOCUS ON THE MIDDLE EAST Ross Ferguson Richmond Community Church I learnt a valuable lesson just last week while visiting church leaders and Relief Workers in Beirut and in the Becaa Valley of Lebanon. I was often asked, when folk heard that I was from New Zealand, about ‘who are our enemies?’ “Do you have enemies?” “Well” I said, “we don’t really have any!” “But everyone has enemies. We’re surrounded by them!” I said: “Probably the closest we come to having an enemy is Australia and that’s only when we are competing on the sports fields!” It seems that this lesson is one we can only learn when we are facing extreme adversity. Just picture yourself living in a country of over four million people that had been invaded by a hostile neighbour in a bitter war, when within two decades between one and two million refugees from that country pour across your border pleading for help. Lots of court time for junior tennis Competition is ramping up with the summer season well under way, both the interschool’s tournaments and the Malcom Shield U14 fixture keeping players busy on court. NBS interschool’s tennis tournaments took place last week, hosting near record numbers of Primary and Intermediate Schools players from across the region. “The standard of play and behaviour on and off court was amazing, players enjoying all levels of competition with enthusiasm and in the spirt of sportsmanship.” The winners represent Nelson in Timaru at the end of the month; Primary School girls winner:

Lucy Mitchell (St Josephs), boys: Connor Edmonds (Nayland), Intermediate girls: Ashley Welsh (Broadgreen), boys: Harry Pugh (Mapua). Competition ramped up, another level with Sundays Malcolm Shield fixture against Marlborough, 8 of our top players travelling over to Blenheim to contest the shield. The boy’s team faced tough competition from Marlborough, conceding all but one match in the singles; Harry Pugh winning in straight sets 6/2, 6/4 against Lucca Wiseman. Nelson girls came through strongly in their singles reversing the boys result; Rani McGuire (capt) dis-

playing mental tenacity when it mattered, winning all 3 of her matches. Going into the final mixed doubles leg of the fixture, Nelson needed to win the majority of the matches to snatch the shield from Marlborough, However, winning 2 out of the 4 closed the fixture at 9/7 to Marlborough. Close matches and challenging competition for our youngsters made for a great day of tennis. Nelson Bays Tennis Association would like to congratulate Rani McGuire and Harry Pugh for being selected to represent Canterbury in January 2019 in the Nations Teams event.

Emily Beaumont Two local horse riders competed in the annual Pacific Horse Challenge in New Caledonia’s Noumea last month. Madeline Woods and Eloise Beattie were members of the New Zealand team who were up against riders from Vanuatu, Australia, Tahiti and New Caledonia. Mounts were allocated to each rider and they spent the

first two days of the three-day event competing individually in show jumping. Madeline achieved two double clear rounds which resulted in her taking first place. The girls then took part in the teams event, joining two North Island riders, Sarah West and Sophie Littlewood. The foursome had impressive results and scooped the silver medal. “I was absolutely stoked. It was

incredible to get placed where we did. We had such a good time over there,” says Madeline. The result was the highest-ever placing for a New Zealand team at the event. Madeline and Eloise are now focussed on local competitions and have their sights firmly set on New Zealand’s premier equestrian event, the Horse of the Year competition, in Hawkes Bay next year.

A friendly reminder: When you make electronic payments such as rates or water, you must quote the account number so we can allocate the payment to the right account. For rates, this is your valuation roll number, which you can find near the top of your rates invoice usually starting with a 1. For water, the number is near the top of your water invoice and starts with a W. Other Council accounts will also have a reference near the top of the invoice. If you move house, please remember to update your online banking reference – or you may find yourself paying someone else’s rates. We want to allocate your payment to your account, but despite our attempts at detective work occasionally we have to return funds to the account it came from due to lack of information.

Isabella Ladlay from Waimea College’s Year-11 Physical Education class tries her hand at Golf Croquet for the first time on Wednesday, October 31. Although the sport has a long history, it has experienced a recent resurgence of interest and has regular world championships, so it’s not just a beginner’s game. Waimea College decided to explore community sports and recreational opportunities for their teens and say by visiting Richmond’s Croquet Club they’re giving students the opportunity to try out something new. “I like trying new things, so this has been a really fun afternoon,” says Isabella.
