Labour MP snubs new voters Jacqui Rawson Reporter

Brightwater residents eager to meet their Labour MP, Damien O’Connor, last Friday were disap-

pointed with his failure to attend. The Labour Party organised three ‘Street Corner Meetings’ for residents to meet West Coast Labour MP Damien O’Connor in preparation for the election. Damien stated that due to last-

minute commitments with the Prime Minister and the launch of the Kauri Dieback policy in Kaitia he was unable to attend. As part of boundary changes to balance out quotas within electorates, Brightwater was trans-

ferred from the Nelson to the West Coast electorate for this election. The no-show left residents scratching their heads as to why their new MP wouldn’t want to appear at the meetings when the

party had set them up. “I would have thought that, considering the new boundary changes coming into effect for this election, Labour would have

Tribal Nations Motorcycle Club (TNMC) are a group of motorcyclists with real concerns for the numbers of teen suicide cases happening each year, using their wheels and hearts to assist those suffering. “We use the noise of our machines to raise awareness,” says ambassador of Tribal Nations Motorcycle Club, Richard Tatana. Richard stated that they are bikers, not bikies, who ride in support of the community. Through their rides and organised public events, they hope to increase people’s knowledge and interest in the cause. As well as to reinforce that there is always support for people who are struggling. This is their first year of riding for Riders Against Teen Suicide (RATS) and the first for the region. Any funds raised are passed on to the NGO’s that work directly with suicide prevention and, in particular, teen suicide. At their event on the 7th of November, TNMC will hand over funds raised to a representative from Youthline New

placed more importance on meeting us,” said local Brightwater resident Toby Harvey. Toby Harvey was appalled that Labour’s MP Damian O’Connor would prefer to stand alongside a kauri in Kaitaia and “nod his head” than turn up and meet the locals who he is asking to vote for him. “Unfortunately, at a very late stage the Prime Minister decided to launch our Biosecurity Kauri Dieback policy in Northland,” said Labour MP Damien O’Connor. Damien is the Biosecurity Minister.

In his absence, Labour’s Nelson candidate Rachel Boyack and other Labour members and supporters attended to answer any questions. “To send a replacement, in Labour’s Nelson candidate Rachel Boyack, along in his place kinda tells me that we are just not that important,” said Toby. Damien said he will be happy to follow up with anyone who had questions or feedback that was passed on to the Labour representatives at the meetings.

The national figures for teen suicides at 654 from June 2019 to July 2020 are almost twice the national road toll, said Richard, and aren’t showing any signs of abating. As someone who has lost too many family and friends to suicide over the past year, Richard is determined to do what he can to help. Christine Warren and Anton Bugler are two of the members of TNMC who have completed a one-day suicide prevention course called Life Keeper. skills to recognise and support those at risk of suicide. The TNMC will be riding on the 7th November from Filco Harley Davidson, Annesbrook. Everybody with a motorbike, any club or social riders, are welcome, with registration beginning on the day at 9.15 am. The ride goes via Tapawara with some stop offs before finishing at the Motueka Recreation Centre at 1 pm. The ride finish at the Motueka Recreation Centre is a public event where people can leave a memento of someone they have lost. Six hundred and fifty pairs of shoes will also be at the event representing those they have been lost to suicide in the past year.

It’s all on, land bought! Matt McCrorie A new school in Richmond is one step closer to reality. The 3-hectare site in Richmond West which has been earmarked for a new school has been purchased this week by the Ministry of Education. “We are one step closer to a new school in the area,” says Minister of Education Chris Hipkins. “This is a huge boost for the local community.” Minister Hipkins says that the school population in the region is growing. “Particularly in the west of Richmond. This is an impor-

tant milestone for families looking to move into the area and those who already live there.” Around 400 homes are planned to be built in the Meadows, while the entire Richmond West area will contain around 1200 new homes by completion. “By 2028 an additional 320 primary, 130 intermediate and 390 secondary places are expected to be needed in the Waimea catchment. By 2048 those numbers are expected to more than double,” Minister Hipkins says. However, Hipkins says it will be some time before the school

gets the greenlight to go ahead. “Community engagement on the future of schooling in Richmond is underway and ends on the 16th of October. It will take time before building begins to ensure that we have had time to consult with the community and get the design right. We will, however, continue to closely monitor the school-age population in the area so we stay ahead of the curve.” “Having finalised the sale of land, it gives the indication that the ministry is very serious about potentially pursuing the school at the site in Richmond West.”

Local team shaking things up in web-design Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Redwood Valley couple Hannah and Nick Ippolito used the time being house-bound during lockdown to turn a long-lingering idea into a reality. The reality, a web-design tool that does the hard, behind the scenes, coding for web designers, launched this week. And is busy acquiring interest internationally with big contenders in the web design arena. Founder Nick Ippolito, a selftaught coder, was running his own web-design business when he hired Rowan Findlay to help him out. Covid lockdown happened and the

idea for the tool that had been kicking around in Nick’s head for over a year began to take form. The downtime, with clients dropping off, provided the best opportunity to develop the creative idea like this, says Hannah Ippolito. To have that mental space in which to come up with the ideas to make it work. “The first few weeks we were working 80 hours a week,” says Nick. They employed Nat Booth, the fourth member of the team who had been made redundant because of the knock-on from Covid. “We were driven by the idea that there must be a way to provide designers with a better level of control,” says Nick

Ippolito. Believing in the project so much, Nick and Hannah have self-funded it through a second mortgage on their home. “It feels a bit like whiplash, to be honest,” says Hannah. “Here we are, four people, from Nelson, New Zealand, who had a vague idea about making web-designing easier and that vague idea is now being shared with the world.” The tool they created, SquareKicker, is a design tool which doesn’t require knowledge of the IT language. It also allows the users, professional designers and DIY builders, to create SquareSpace websites faster and with greater control, says Hannah. “Without needing to write a single line of code,” says Nick.

LOVE YOUR LAND

Nelson Matters

I seek your vote in Election 2020 so I can continue to champion this wonderful Nelson Tasman region we share. I do this job because I love helping people. I have the experience to know how Government works. Recent cases include getting NZ residency for volunteer firefighter and florist Steve and Gail Webster, resolving the Ministry of Education bill of $15,000 for teacher and new parent Jasmine Jenke and helping access cataract surgery for Angela Wilson. I sort hundreds of cases like these each year. This work also helps me identify where Government is not working and drive change. I am also motivated by the opportu-

nity to advance projects with others that will make Nelson an even better place. They have included establishing the Kahurangi National Park, getting Garin College, building Whakatu Drive, upgrading our arts facilities and projects like Saxton Stadium for our sports and the Early Settlers Memorial recognising our history. Projects started but not completed include the Waimea Community Dam, the Great Taste Cycleway and the extension of Snowdens Bush. My top priority in this next Parliament if re-elected will be getting progress on a new hospital for Nelson. It will involve investment of over $500 million. The current

buildings are outdated, too small and New Zealand’s most earthquake prone hospital. The Building Act changes I made as Minister require it be replaced by 2028. We need to get on with it. Nelson’s growing traffic congestion cannot be ignored. National has announced a fully funded $210 million plan to get on with building the Inland Route and converting Rocks Road into a boulevard for walking and cycling. These major infrastructure projects are part of National’s economic plan. A recession is a smart time to be investing in community assets. It is far better to create jobs building these facilities than on paying thousands

544 Waimea Road, Nelson

of people the dole. My Election 2020 campaign has focussed on jobs. Nelson has already lost hundreds of jobs and dozens of businesses. Unemployment is tipped to top 220,000 nationally and 4,000 locally. Labour is compounding this problem by imposing extra costs and regulations on businesses. National’s policies like Jobstart and Skillstart do the opposite and will help keep people in work. The other major campaign issue has been Labour’s centralisation of our most important public services like our polytechnic, NMIT and Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. Nelson has everything to lose and nothing to gain from them being

run from afar. National will ensure we retain local control of NMIT and our District Health Board. Nelson is the best little city in the best little country in the world. These are challenging times. I offer the experience of having helped get Nelson through two previous recessions. Working together we will recover and make Nelson even better. My final plea regardless of who you may be supporting is to ensure you vote. Nelson proudly has one of the highest polling rates. It shows respect for those who have fought for our freedoms and that we care about Nelson’s and New Zealand’s future. Advt.

Emily and Annie Eden always sat next to each other in the classroom but may find themselves sitting on opposite sides of the courtroom. The Richmond locals studied law together at Victoria University, and two weeks ago were admitted to the bar. Emily is working locally as a defence lawyer and last week had her first court appearance.

“I was slightly terrified at first, but it was good to get the first one done,” she says. Annie is in the process of applying to join the police force. During her time at Victoria she realised that she didn’t want to be a lawyer but did enjoy law. She hopes to be a detective which would have her on the opposing side to Emily. “I think it would be great to be across the courtroom from Emily, but legally she can’t

There’s a global shortage of bicycles which means it’s likely people are going to miss out on new bikes for Christmas if they haven’t already pre-ordered them. MyRide manager Mike Anderson said he is expecting a shortage, particularly in ebikes and of standard bikes up to $1500. He believes this is largely due to a shortage in the shipping containers used to move the bikes internationally. There also appear to be associated difficulties in getting items loaded into the containers. A shipment of 50 e-bikes is due to arrive this week and all but two have already been sold. Some of those are orders from April. Mike said that people understand we live in a different world now and are, thankfully, happy to wait. Bike stores generally estimate what they will need in advance and pre-order stock accordingly. And, usually, their wholesalers carry extra stock to meet the demands. That is currently not the case. Wholesalers, too, are out of stock.

Local Kris Roberts and tourists Libby Svensen and Kristin Liggins enjoying the local cycle trails. Photo: Jenny Nicholson The year has produced record figures of bike sales with MyRide’s July’s sales figures topping those you’d expect to see in December with the upturn for Christmas. One of the effects of the Covid-19 lockdown was the change to the way we travel. Many are choosing to cycle

rather than use public transport and cycle touring is becoming an alternative to overseas travel. Most people talk about riding locally, but many have bought intending to get cycle fit before riding one of New Zealand’s trails in the summer.

“It’s great that people are not just riding around the block,” said Mike, “they can go for decent rides and explore the region.” As e-bikes have become easier to use, there has been a surge in sales to baby boomers, their oldest sale being to a person in their mid-eighties.

E-bike rides, bridge walks and new showhomes… what a weekend! Put Waimea Plains at the top of your ‘to do’ list for this weekend, because there’s a lot going on here in the name of innovative living for over-65s. Our new pedestrian bridge is open, linking the new housing area to the community facilities; Hybrid Bikes will be offering e-bike rides, so you can give electric-assist cycling a spin on our cycle path network; and our newest showhomes are open for viewing.

Engaging children to protect penguins Jenny Nicholson Linda Jenkins, a local spokesperson for Little Blue Penguin guardians spoke to children at the Tasman District Library last week about what they can do to help protect the region’s penguins. “It’s New Zealand’s other bird that can’t fly,” Linda said. The Nelson Tasman region is currently home to the little blue penguin which is listed as “at risk” in regard to the potential extinction of their species. Linda Jenkins spoke to children about how they can help protect what is the smallest penguin on earth. “The sea is the penguin’s happy place,” Linda said. These birds weigh about 1 kg but are strong swimmers, managing to swim 25 km out to sea and back again in a day. Penguins are most vulnerable when they come onto land to nest. Rats and stoats pose a risk to the nest but dogs, with their keen

sense of smell, are possibly the biggest danger. Linda told the children that by keeping their dogs on a lead at the beach they are helping to protect the penguins. On early morning beach walks, Linda has spotted 20-25 pairs of penguin tracks. The little birds can be noisy and smelly, but it is difficult to find the nests. Knowing where the nests are would be advantageous because placing of predator traps could then be more accurate. A specialist little blue penguin detection dog is being brought to the region this week to help find nests at Little Kaiteri. Mena, a Hungarian Vizsla, uses her keen sense of smell to sniff out nests and sits to indicate when she’s found one. Picking up and treating injured penguins is a specialist job. Although tiny, penguins are fiesty and have very sharp teeth. Children were encouraged to phone the Department of Conservation, 0800 362 468, if they find an injured penguin.

Ending sunshine wages

Rachel Boyack for Nelson

Ross Lampert, FIRST Union organiser with Jenny Wells, FIRST Union delegate and Rachel.

We’re committed to helping working New Zealanders by raising wages and protecting them while they’re at work. Labour has increased the minimum wage to $18.90 this year, increasing the pay of 242,000 full time workers by an extra $48 per week. And we’ll raise it again to $20 by 2021, as well as extending the Living Wage to workers contracted to the public sector, and doubling sick days from 5 to 10 days a year. As a former FIRST Union organiser, Rachel has spent years fighting for workers across the top of the South to get a fair deal, and she negotiated collective agreements with employers like Nelson Pine to lift wages and conditions for workers.

Rachel says that Nelson still has a reputation for ‘Sunshine Wages’, but she believes that anyone who does a fair day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Rachel has spent years advocating for better working conditions for people like Pak’nSave Richmond employee Jenny Wells. “I met Rachel when she was the organiser for FIRST Union,” Jenny says. “When Rachel put her mind to something, it got done. She was extremely effective at advocating for us, and that’s why I’m supporting her in the election.”

Improved health services As a Nelson MP inside a Labour Government, Rachel Boyack says she will be a strong advocate for a new hospital for Nelson and improved mental health services.

“It’s important to me that clients and their whānau are fully involved in the design of services at Nikau House so that they meet the needs of the community.”

Labour has made record investment in health infrastructure after nine years of neglect. “As your Member of Parliament inside a Labour Government, I will push hard for a new Nelson Hospital to be at the top of the list,” Rachel says. Rachel’s work with the clients and whānau of Nikau House is an example of how she made people’s voice heard and made a positive change for mental health services in our community. “I supported the clients in their battle to protect Nikau House all the way to Wellington to present their petition,” Rachel says. “I continue to work with the clients and families to ensure they have input into what the services look like going forward.”

Rachel with Nikau House campaigner, Daniel Timms.

Vote now and give two ticks to Labour With Election Day this Saturday we are urging people to vote early and avoid the queues on Saturday. The polling booths have COVID-19 precautionary processes in place which means voting may take a little longer. A big thank you to the friendly Electoral Commission teams across the Nelson electorate who have made it so easy to vote early. Jacinda and the team have a plan to rebuild New Zealand and it’s already underway, now’s not the time to put on the brakes. Outside of Parliament I have a proven track record of getting things done for Nelson. I advocated for a new school for Richmond West and was delighted with last week’s announcement that a site has been purchased making us one step closer to a new school in the area. This is just one of the many initiatives I have backed to make Nelson a better place to live. This election is Nelson’s opportunity to have a seat at the table in a Jacinda Ardern- led Labour Government. If I’m privileged to be elected as your MP, I will be a strong and positive voice for Nelson.

Please give your two ticks to Labour so we can keep Nelson moving!

Every New Zealander deserves a warm, dry, safe place to call home We turned around the state housing decline by putting an end to National’s state house sell-off and ramping up our state house building programme, with Kāinga Ora now building more than 25 new houses a week.

Outside there’s room for a raised vegetable garden and the secure fence and gate has made Maree feel safe.

Here in Nelson, the first state houses built under this Government’s watch welcomed in new tenants last October. The first tenants to move into the Kawai Street block, Maree and Mark Phillips, say their sunny, warm, dry home has “meant everything” to them.

“She goes down the streets pointing out Labour election hoardings shouting, ‘we need Rachel and Aunty Jacinda’.”

“It’s dry, it’s warm, it’s double glazed and insulated and has a walk- in shower which has been great for us as we both suffer from arthritis,” Maree says.

Her small granddaughter, Ruby-Lee is very impressed with Labour.

Labour’s Candidate for Nelson Rachel Boyack was pleased to accompany Associate Housing Minister Kris Faafoi to visit some of the new state houses in Richmond that are almost ready for tenants to move into.

Just a thought... Stephen Hooper

However, as our minds move towards the end of the year and the Christmas season, we are reminded that our faith provides hope even in difficult circumstances. This hope does not mean we are free from disappointment and the tough realities of life or that everything will work out the way we planned. What we need is a fresh perspective that enables us to live through life’s ups and downs. We therefore need to recognise our incredible blessings as individuals, and as a region and nation. Remember how we have pulled together as nation and supported our neighbours. Importantly, even if the future remains uncertain, we can still seek God’s comforting presence and trust that God will help us through. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13

Many years ago, I worked with World Vision’s teams in Kabul in Afghanistan. We met with the staff and beneficiaries involved in our training programme for former child soldiers. Each of these young men was leaving behind many years fighting with the Taliban. They were learning new skills as builders, plasterers and in other trades. One morning a group of us met with a 17-year-old young man, who had been a child soldier since he was ten years old. He was retraining to be a tailor. He took me by the hand and said five words that I will never forget; “thank you for the hope”. Many people I have spoken to over the last year, have confirmed that 2020 has been a tough year. With the anxiety of Covid and its social and economic impacts, storms, forest fires and drought in New Zealand and overseas, many of us may feel that hope is a long way off.

OPINION

Voting made easy for those who aren’t interested Steve Page Publisher, Waimea Weekly Let me start out by saying a few things. I’m not a political person, 99% of the time it bores me. But as the election approaches I kinda force myself to take an interest and here is what I have gleaned from

Need an implant?

what’s going on. 1. Jacinda has not saved New Zealand. The ministry of health and its staff did, Jacinda was only the messenger. It’s almost like we are to believe that she and her partner sat down each night over a cup of tea and planned the big saviour. They didn’t! Hats off

Does your smile have a gap? Have you lost a tooth or two? With a fitted dental implant we can really help you chew. We’ll attach a screw to your jaw & fit a ceramic tooth in place, And restore a full smile to your beautiful face. Doesn’t matter if your problem’s accidental or incidental, we’ll turn your frown upside down at Nelson Dental.

to the Health sector for their work and advice. Jacinda was the messenger. 2. Nelson and Tasman needs a local MP in Parliament. No doubt. We are starting to get way too much info and influence from, and about, Auckland! 3. I agree that the Greens are in fact a bunch of “whackos as described last week. They are just weird and, I think, too nutty with most of their policies. If you are middle NZ, under them you’re knackered. The last time they made any sense to me was with Jeanette Fitzsimons. She was true to the Green mandate and she was honest, gentle and passionate. Maybe that new young lady Chloe Swarbrick will be the same soon and she will become the leader at some stage. I hope so, that $12million school donation fiasco by the Green party’s James Shaw finally shut them down for me. 4. What the heck is Jamie Lee Ross still doing in politics?

5. National’s Maureen Pugh is a really neat lady and full of real class. Remember, she was the lady who Bridges made some rude comment about a year ago and all through that she maintained a quiet dignity. I really rate her and hopefully she will do well in the Tasman West Coast electorate. Her offsider Damien O’Connor is the exact opposite and has always been really hard work to deal with and has never really become part of our area. Maureen would bring a closeness to the voters and Parliament and is always approachable,

just like a West Coaster should be! 6. Nelson’s Nick Smith is also a stand-up guy. We dealt with him on a number of occasions over Covid lockdown and he always returned the phone calls and delivered on everything he promised. And yes, I rate that! It’s rare. He is also active in volunteering his time etc for a number of causes this paper is involved in and he has always offered to help before being asked. We, as an area ,need him back in Parliament. Nelson needs representation and now is not the time to change. Labour’s Rachel Boyack, I understand, is a quite nice lady but from what I have observed, extremely inexperienced. She needs another few years at the coalface getting that experience and I guess if the Labour party agree she will be a list MP anyway? 7. Winston won’t get in. Personally, I find him kinda “sneaky like he’s always up to something. No doubt he has done some good things over the years, but it might be his time to go? 8. ACT’s David Seymour is the new bright hope in all this. And if you are a hunter or shooter or anything like that, cast a party vote for ACT. You will need him as we progress into the new age. We need his kind of rational common sense in Parliament! Ironically, he’s a bit like Winston when he first started. Keeps the others honest. 9. National leader Judith Collins has just missed the mark I feel. I actually don’t doubt she

a nice enough lady but she’s not endearing. Jacinda is over the top endearing. Like living on Waltons’ mountain - almost too much. Actually, it has been too much. So, we have two opposites to choose from there. 10. And the Maori party? Could it be that a lot of their supporters are a bit like me and tired of listening to the endless angry rhetoric by John Tamaheri in particular? There appears to be no actual answers just a whole lot blame shuffling. At 1% or just less you would think they would take a close look at the public delivery. 11. End of life choice? I reckon if this passes two things will happen. Most sensible brave people will have the choice which would include more dignity and more control, the vulnerable will be protected and it won’t be an easy thing to fool all concerned if you are unstable. 12. Marijuana, of course this should be legalised. More than anything it will decriminalise the drug and take it from the hands of the underworld. Let’s face it, it won’t in reality make a huge difference. Currently it’s not hard to get, does have some fantastic medical properties and quite a few of us would rather be stoned than in an alcoholic coma. Much easier on the body and we would also have a new weapon for pain control instead of Voltaren and the likes, it just makes sense. We’ll see what you think, you’ll agree with some and disagree with others but either way just make sure you vote.

Caring for struggling families in our community Helping Families is a charity organisation supporting the families in the Nelson/Tasman region where statistics show there are one in three children living in poverty. That’s around 6000 children, right on the doorstep. And for their parents, life is stressful, and the task of meeting basic needs can be overwhelming. The organisation volunteers help local families going through a tough time, by providing clothing, toiletries and household items such as furniture and bedding that they collect from donors around the region. Founder of Helping Families, Kristy Rowe, set the organisation up in 2018. “I saw families in the community doing everything they possibly could to survive but it still wasn’t enough,” says Kristy. There was a stigma associated with

Helping Families rely heavily on the honesty of those seeking assistance to be of genuine need. Helping Families are currently running a Christmas Box campaign. Breast Cancer Awareness Month Join the Pink Ribbon Appeal in October as thousands of Kiwis around the country take to the streets to collect funds for breast cancer education, research, advocacy, and patient support. The appeal couldn’t happen without the amazing volunteers and supporters. If you are keen to be involved, the coordinator of the Richmond and Stoke Pink Ribbon street appeal, Rachael Watson would love for you to make contact. Rachael has her heart in the cause having lost a sister to breast cancer at age 47 and needs over 70 volunteers to help her run the Pink Ribbon appeal over two days at three sites

in Richmond. The dates are Friday 30th and Saturday 31st of October. And the three Richmond sites are outside Farmers and Richmond Fresh Choice in the Richmond Mall, and one outside Kmart. Volunteers will also be required for their Stoke locations. If you can volunteer two hours of your time please sign up at; www. breastcancerfoundation.org.nz or contact Rachael directly on 021 209 3325. If not able to volunteer, then please donate or wear some pink to help raise awareness. All donations go to New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

Yvonne Fuller and Lorna Harrison were volunteers for the Pink Ribbon Appeal last year. All funds raised from this event, happening again this month, go to New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter provides a life saving, critical lifeline to our communities. When things go wrong, the speed and manoeuvrability characteristics of the helicopter offer unique advantages over conventional land ambulances. When our people are vulnerable, isolated or in need of help fast, the helicopter is there. Getting this advanced care when they need it can mean the difference between life and death. Meet just a handful of the people below who, in their words, owe their lives to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter.

Vern Walker Heart Attack

Brydie Omlo Seizure

Lynely Bird Marine Accident

“I enjoy my road rides with my mates, we go a lot. On one ride I was feeling crook - I thought I might have indigestion. What was actually happening was a heart attack! A call to 111 saw the arrival of the rescue helicopter. I knew the crew because I was a long-time sponsor- boy was I glad to see them! They saved my life. I am lucky to be alive.”

“When I knew the helicopter was coming there was a sense of relief because we didn’t know what was happening to Brydie and we live rurally without any emergency services close by. Things calmed down in our house once we knew they were sending the helicopter, we knew help wasn’t far away. That relief was amazing.”

“It was blowing a 70 knots south easterly in Port Ligar, a gust of wind blew the hatch down and it hit my head. There was a lot of blood. It would have taken us eight hours steaming in the boat to get back, without the helicopter and the crew I wouldn’t be alive today.”

Ranzau Road – The story behind the name Marg Farrelly The name Ranzau reflects Nelson’s early German influence. In 1839, the New Zealand Company, having found insufficient numbers of British emigrants, appointed an agent in Bremen, Germany, to seek emigrants to join one of its settlement schemes. In June 1843, a group of 26 families from Germany found themselves on the shores of the young settlement of Nelson. Some settled in the Moutere, naming their settlement St Paulidorf. Others settled in the Waimea near the mouth of the river, and some remained in Nelson town. A second group of Germans, those who founded Ranzau, arrived in Nelson on board the Skiold in 1844. Count Kuno Heinrich Karl zu Rantzau-Breitenburg, a wealthy German nobleman and lawyer, had dreamed of creating a German colony at Nelson. He paid for the passages of the majority of the families who came out on this ship. He expected that, as one of the sponsors of the settlement project, profits could be made by having the settlers pay him back over time. The Skiold set sail from the city of Hamburg on 21 April 1844, ar-

They were Johann Benoit, Carl Kelling and his brother Johann Friederich Kelling. Before leaving Hamburg, all the adult male emigrants signed an agreement with the Count’s

representatives. This agreement promised employment at a wage of the amount current in Nelson that was to be paid partly in food and housing. Each adult male would receive ten to twenty acres of land which he could pay for over the years. The German expeditions were given a good welcome. An example of the expectation that

Germans would prove good colonists was expressed by Colonel Wakefield, who wrote “I am of the opinion that they will set the same example of frugality, industry and sobriety that I have always remarked amongst their countrymen.” The immigrants on the Skiold were greeted by bad news: arrangements made in advance

for them were in disarray due to the financial collapse of the New Zealand Company. The majority of the German emigrants from both ships chose to re-emigrate to South Australia where prospects looked more promising. The settlement chosen for the passengers of the Skiold consisted of seven parcels of land in close proximity to one another in Waimea East. These had been allotted so as to be practically in one unit. The settlement was called Ranzau, honouring the Count who had sponsored the emigrants. It was not far from Nelson and had access by a good road. The new settlers were supplied with sufficient provisions to last a year or more. Some of the Skiold Germans took up other land in Nelson and a new Moutere settlement called Sarau was established. The whole district of Waimea East became known as Ranzau until it was renamed in 1914 due to the hatred of Germany during the Great War. It was renamed Hope, after Jane Hope, who was also an early settler. However, there are still reminders of the previous name, which can be seen in Ranzau Road and Ranzau School. Sarau is now usually known as Upper Moutere.

Tasman Suns welcome back Sam Dempster Jacob Page Nelson Giants captain Sam Dempster will end his basketball hiatus and play for the Tasman Suns in the national 3x3 competition. Sam elected not to play in the National Basketball League competition for his beloved Nelson, instead choosing to see out the Covid pandemic with his young family. “It was great to be with my family during that time but it was so hard not to be able to be there and help,” he says. Sam says the faster 3x3 concept was something he liked and he was excited to get amongst it. “I had my first taste of it two years ago and immediately liked it,” he says. The Schick 3x3 Cup has been reset for November 12 to 14 at ILT Stadium in Invercargill. Sam will be joined by Bronson Beri, who also sat out the the NBL, Tom Ingham and young gun Tysxun Aiolupotea. “I really feel like we can go there and surprise some teams,” Sam says. Richmond players shine for Tasman United Academy Jacob Page Reporter

Supporting all sorts of smiles in our community. We love our work, bringing Smiles of Confidence to the Top-of-the-South for over 20 years. For us, being a good local business means doing what we can to bring smiles by supporting community groups across our region.

From protecting the smiles of our ‘mini Mako’ by giving mouthguards to all junior rugby players, to sponsoring school art productions and getting in behind Victory Boxing, to supporting our Big Brothers Big Sisters and Wish-for-a-Smile charities. Putting smiles on faces is what we are all about. If your smile needs a bit of help, get in touch with our friendly team today.

The Tasman United Academy sent 18 players aged 15 and 16 travelled to compete in the Canterbury United 2020 Tournament in Christchurch. The Tasman United Academy (TUA), included eight players from Richmond AFC. The team performed exceedingly well given they were the only team that travelled and do not play Saturday football as a team. TUA impressed in the pool rounds comfortably progressing to the finals with a 7-0 win against Ferrymead Bays, a 7-2 win over St Bedes, and a 1-0 win over Halswell. In an intense semi-final, TUA took on Cashmere Technical Football Club and eventually took the win 2-0 with goals to Richmond’s Ben McLean, who was the team’s leading scorer with five and Xavier Milson. In the final TUA came up against Nomads and neither side could be separated at the end of regular play so moved to penalties. After the TUA keeper had saved a shot but was ruled to have moved off the line, unfortunately couldn’t stop the second attempt and Nomads progressed on to win 4-3 on penalties. A cruel way to lose a final, but that’s football. The entire region should be proud of these young men who represented the Nelson/Tasman area with determination and character.

Nelson Speedway fireworks night coming up on the 24th October.

Speedway opening night delayed The opening night of the Nelson Speedway Association season on Saturday, was called off due to a wet track at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. Rain earlier in the day had the final say with the Trackman Trophy event now set to be contested during the Coca-Cola Fireworks night on October 24.

Unity is what Niesha Duley is after as she begins her tenure at Rough Island Equestrian Park. “I wanted to do something for the community because the area has lacked that in recent years.” The park is currently home to 5 equestrian groups, Nelson Western Riding Club, Nelson Dressage Group, Nelson Bays Pony Club, Nelson Riding Club and Waimea Pony Club, and is also used by many more equestrian disciplines on a regular basis. She says many of the groups simply aren’t on the same page at present when it comes to maintaining the facility and she would like that to change. “The groups don’t seem to work together,” she says. “If you need to have an arena raked, one group will say they’re too busy, while another will say

they aren’t using it. “I just want to get them back to having accountability and some belonging to it.” Niesha says the hope is there. “We need lots of things, like new cross-country jumps and a top on the arena, and I would like to see the area tidied up a bit more, sprayed and mowed and general maintenance of the buildings.” Niesha says the Marlborough Equestrian Park can offer a blueprint of sorts. “I know Marlborough must be really proud of what they have and I know they have the money and own the facility, but we can do something similar. “Right now we are struggling to have people pick up the horse s..t.” Niesha says the area will host a full calendar of spring and summer events.” Niesha says volunteers with time on their hands, even for an hour New Rough Island Equestrian Park president Niesha Dua day, would be helpful as she sets ley is looking for a some unity from the clubs thst use the area as she begins her tenure. Amateur boxers ready to rumble Jonty Dine Reporter

After a decade between bouts, amateur boxing will return to Nelson this month. The South Island Golden Gloves will be held at Dixon’s Boxing Gym in Richmond with almost sixty fights on the card. Randall Dixon says he hopes the event will be the first of many as he looks to bring amateur boxing back to the region. “Without the amateurs rolling we don’t have a corporate or pro event, we are wanting to run a tournament twice a year, shared between Whakatu and Dixons.” Randall says there is a plethora of young talent just needing the opportunity to compete. “Our gyms are packed with youth wanting to get out there, so we want to give these kids an opportunity in front of a home crowd.” The Golden Gloves will run from October 24-26. Tracey Ann Orlowski says it’s been a lot of hard work getting to this point but the excitment is

Come along to one of these events to be part of the conversation about how we should protect and restore our environment, build community resilience, and provide for appropriate development of Tasman’s towns, local centres, rural areas, and coastal places.

If you are a community group, agency or organisation that can make a positive impact on our ageing population, register for a stall now and make your presence felt at the Positive Ageing Expo. The Positive Ageing Expo has run annually since 2008 and attracts about 2,000 people each year.
