Criminals caught on camera Simon Bloomberg
The new security cameras that have been installed around Richmond’s central business area are already proving effective with images recorded from the cameras providing evidence to help police catch two offenders. Richmond Unlimited secured funding from the Pub Charity to install seven security cameras around the town after businesses
expressed concern about a wave of tagging and petty crime in the CBD. The cameras were installed early in the New Year and Sergeant Kyle Bruning of the Richmond police says the quality of the images and extent of the coverage has been a revelation. “We always knew they would be invaluable for us but I was surprised at the quality of the images - they are very, very good,” Kyle says. “We also have very good
coverage of the area and can track offenders as they move around the town which is helpful.” Kyle says they have already had “three files where we can identify the offender on camera” since they were installed. Two of these have resulted in arrests while the third investigation into “a person of interest” is still progressing and police “still have some work to do before we visit them”. Kyle says one of the offenders
was caught on camera with stolen goods after the offence was reported to police by a Richmond retailer. He says the offender initially denied the allegations “until we confronted him with the CCTV footage and his head went down and his hand went up”. “We often have a good idea of who is responsible for an offence through word of mouth or their MO but we don’t have enough evidential sufficiency. But it’s
hard for someone to argue when you put a video clip in front of a judge. “These cameras have proven very worthwhile in a short space of time and I’m sure they’ll help us catch more and more offenders. I suspect we’ll also get fewer denials from offenders if they know there’s a chance they were on camera.”

Cameron’s support crew enjoying the ride Simon Bloomberg Behind every successful athlete there’s an army of supporters and Kathmandu Coast to Coast Two-Day winner Cameron Jones is no exception. Cameron, 16, became the youngest person to win the iconic multisport race when he traversed 243km across the South Island on Friday and Saturday in a record time of 12hr 19min 5sec. The 16-year-old Waimea College student held a 10 minute lead at the end of day one before paddling and cycling his way to the finish line at New Brighton, 47 minutes ahead of second-placed Oliver Thompson. Although it was a remarkable effort by the talented multisport athlete, he is the

“No problems, I’m in a holiday mood, I retired 18 months ago. We took the family to Golden Bay and Kaiteriteri. More long weekends doesn’t bother me but we have enough.
“Not a hassle, I don’t work and the shops were still all open. I didn’t do anything in particular over the long weekend, I was just in the garden.”
“It was awesome, I had Waitangi Weekend off so I went to the International Kai Festival and got some chores done at home. The short weeks didn’t really impact me.”
“I had to work the whole weekend, both weekends. We’ve got enough long weekends, although they’re great, it’s just a shame people have to work during them.”

Kyle is confident the cameras will be a “very good long-term deterrent once word gets around that they are there”. He says police are grateful to the Pub Charity for providing the funding for the cameras and “we are already talking to people about getting some more cameras”. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne, who provided a letter supporting the initial application for funding under the banner of Richmond Safer Community CCTV, says “it’s fantastic” that the cameras are making an immediate impact on crime in the Richmond CBD. He says Richmond Unlimited did a great job securing the funding for the cameras and he is happy to support any further applications for more cameras. “I’m absolutely supportive and appreciate what Richmond Unlimited and the businesses are doing,” he says. “It’s a tremendous benefit for them and the whole community - it’s an excellent concept and I’d support any application for outside funding.”

then join them on the mountain running course on Christmas Day. Cameron is also fortunate to have a great support network in Nelson with world-class athletes like the Usshers, Dan Busch and Trevor Voyce all helping out. “They are a fantastic bunch of people who take him under their wing and teach him and support him,” Phil says. “He’s gets up at five in the morning to go paddling with Dan, and why wouldn’t he? “He’s also had a huge amount of support from Village Cycles and Giant (cycles) and Waimea College - all the teachers keep an eye for him.” Cameron says he is also fortunate to have a close group of friends at Waimea College who are also involved in multisport. first to admit that he owes everything to his supporters and sponsors. And at the top of that list are his parents Phil Jones and Mary Duncan who have driven thousands of kilometres, transporting Cameron and his bikes and kayaks to races around the country. “The first race we took him to was the 3D in Rotorua in 2014 when he was 13,” Phil says. “We had to get a dispensation for him to compete and he finished 22nd in the open field. “We’ve covered quite a few miles since then but we’ve really enjoyed it. We’ve obviously spent a lot of time in Arthur’s Pass while Cameron has been training for the Coast to Coast but what could be better than that - I love that country.” “When Cameron did the paddle at the weekend, I still had time to go mountainbiking up around Craigieburn. It was a win-win.” Phil says the family also fits family holidays around Cameron’s races and training, with the Coast to Coast giving Mary plenty of opportunities to visit her family in Darfield near Arthur’s Pass. The Jones family spent last Christmas in Darfield, allowing Cameron to paddle the kayak stage of the race with Coast to Coast legends Richard and Elina Ussher the day before Christmas and

Saving whales ‘humbling’ Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
When Nelson woman Mary Seelen woke up on Friday to the news of the whale stranding in Golden Bay, she automatically knew she had to go and help. With a few days off before her teacher training course started, and her four kids at school, her husband said – ‘just go.’ And it was the right decision - as what followed was a “life changing experience” for Mary and her 13 year old son, Brodie. About three-quarters of the 400 pilot whales that beached themselves on Farewell Spit on Thursday night died before rescuers arrived the next morning. Another 200 were found alive on a nearby beach on Saturday morning, with most making their own way back to sea at high tide that night. Volunteers then successfully refloated the 17 that were still stranded on Sunday. Mary says that she lost count of how many buckets of water she tipped over the whales over the 10 hours she was out in the water on Friday. “Project Jonah briefed us on the

Photo: Supplied. do’s and don’ts, such as that you never stand in front of the whales’ heads – it can make them stressed as that’s where their sonar system is.” Mary says that many of the people helping on Friday were young freedom campers who had been at the Luminate Festival on Takaka Hill. Among them were people from Spain, Italy, America, Germany, France, and The Czech Rebublic. “It was a beautiful thing to have all of these different people working together with a shared purpose, and seeing people from
all walks of life whispering words of encouragement to the whales, praying for them and singing to them in a multitude of languages as they knelt beside them, stroking their heads,” she says. “Often, if the whale had a dry area and you poured the water on, it would respond in a way that you knew and it knew you were helping it,” she says. “You could feel their sigh of relief and you sensed them calm and their breathing slow down when you stroked and rocked them.” After a break on Saturday, Mary returned early on Sunday
morning with Brodie. “We pretty much just leapt into our wetsuits as fast as we could,” she says. She says that on Sunday there was a different atmosphere and more locals and children were helping. “We ended up helping a whale closer to the road and we held it gently in the water and rocked it side-to-side, which helps it get its bearings.” “I was on my knees over this whale, hugging it. You feel so connected. It kept going through my head: ‘they may not make it but at least we can provide some

comfort in this time’.” Mary says that when they let them go, it was the “best feeling ever”. “Everyone joined hands in a long chain and when the last whale was let go there was a big cheer. “Brodie then said to me: ‘I’m never going to forget this’.” Mary says the support from local businesses was also amazing, with Subway providing free food for the volunteers, and Farewell Spit Eco Tours taking them back and forth to the whales. “I am so grateful to have been able to help and I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again,” she says. “All in all a very humbling and incredibly moving experience to be a part of, words don’t seem to do it justice.” No whales were found stranded on Tuesday morning and whales that were in the area on Sunday were last seen late in the day about 6km offshore, swimming towards Separation Point at the northern end of Abel Tasman National Park. DOC have decided that the dead whales will be moved with a digger further up Farewell Spit to the area of the nature reserve that is not open to the public, off the shore and into the dunes.

Crowds swarm to first-ever Noodle Night Market
Boatshed chef Thomas Lemoine fed the masses during Saturday’s Noodle Night Market at Washbourn Gardens.
Washbourn Gardens was filled with food, music, decorations and one of the largest crowds it has ever seen, at Nelson’s very first Noodle Night Market on Saturday. Organised by the Nelson Multi Cultural Council and the Tasman District Council, the Asian-inspired market was so popular that the majority of the food sold out within an hour. All 14 of the vendors on site were busy with several rushing to supermarkets and food suppliers to restock their ingredients and keep up with the incredible demand.
Boatshed chef Thomas Lemoine and his girlfriend and Stefano’s Pizzeria waitress Marine Minvielle say the 100 portions of Japchae, a noodlebased Korean dish, that they had prepared were all gone in an hour. Marine, who was on the organising committee for the market says she and Thomas thought running a stall together would ‘be a bit of fun’ but they weren’t expecting the massive crowds that came flowing through the market. “The amount of people here is awesome, we had such a long list of people wanting our Japchae!”
While the pair didn’t have a long queue snaking around the gardens like many of the vendors, Marine says at one point the number of people wanting their dish was so great that she was taking people’s orders and getting them to come and pick it up 20 minutes later. The vendors weren’t the only ones surprised with the numbers, organisers Jenni Bancroft, Jessica Diaz and Mike Tasman-Jones were astounded by how popular the market was. “The night has been spectacular, very beautiful and we are really impressed at the turn out of people.”
Free parking for Queen St businesses Richmond Unlimited has secured free car parking at the Richmond A & P Showgrounds to help alleviate pressure on parks in the Richmond central business district while the Queen St upgrade is completed. One of the biggest concerns of Queen St retailers and businesses is that the loss of car parks during the upgrade, which started last week, will impact on their trading. The Tasman District Council has already reduced time limits in some car parks to free them up for shoppers and this week Richmond Unlimited announced it has negotiated extra free parks at the A & P Showgrounds. “We are doing anything we can to make it easier for retailers, businesses and shoppers during the Queen St upgrade,” Richmond Unlimited chairperson Marina Buonocore says. “Hopefully this will help free up car parks in the CBD for customers.” Marina is hoping businesses and retailers will encourage their staff to use the car parks in the Showgrounds because “it’s to their benefit”. “It’s only a 500m walk from the Showgrounds to the CBD and this is an incentive for their businesses,” Marina says. The car park is open from 7am to 9pm daily.

.CO.NZ 100 whales found beached at Farewell Spit this morning: Another hundred whales were found beached on Farewell Spit on Saturday morning. It is not yet clear whether the pilot whales were part of the pod of 400 that beached overnight on Thursday in the third-largest recorded stranding in New Zealand since the 1800s. When the 400 whales were discovered early Friday morning, some 250 to 300 whales were already dead, sparking claims DOC should have acted sooner. Takaka DOC operations manager Andrew Lamason believes that the refloated survivors on Friday swam in the wrong direction and headed back into the bay. “If you were going to design a geographical trap for whales, Golden Bay is pretty much perfect,” he says.
Project Jonah, DOC and community volunteers have been working around the clock to save a pod of pilot whales following one of New Zealand’s largest-ever strandings.

Vettes coming to roar around Nelson and Tasman Simon Bloomberg
Senior reporter Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
One hundred and nine of the estimated 3000 Chevrolet Corvettes in New Zealand will be cruising around Nelson this weekend as part of the National Corvette Convention which features a display of the classic sports cars at Founders Heritage Park on Saturday. The convention is being organised by the Top of the South Corvettes and two of the committee members, Sheryle and John Grant of Stoke, say car enthusiasts are in for a real treat. John says Corvettes are one of the most eye-catching American sports cars and, for that reason, they won't be travelling in a full convoy when they cruise through Nelson. "We'll be driving along Whakatu Dr when we all go out to Seifrieds for lunch on Sunday but we'll only be driving in groups of 10," John says. "You can't put 109 Corvettes on

most enduring American sports cars, with Chevrolet so far manufacturing seven generations of Vettes since the first C1 rolled off the production line in Detroit in

1953. He says the convention will feature cars ranging from a 1958 model to one that is just six months old, with the most popu-
lar being the classic Stingray. "The Stingray shape is an American icon and it's timeless. It's 50 years old and still looks good," he says. And it's not surprising that John and Sheryle will be lining up their his-and-hers Corvettes at Founders on Saturday. John, who has owned four Corvettes, has a 1971 Stingray while Sheryle has a 1969 model. "I've always been a car person but when you have kids and a mortgage you can't have a hobby car," John says. "So when the boys left home I thought I'd do something for me and started looking for a mid-60s Mustang. "But then a friend convinced me to get a Corvette and they been our hobby ever since. My Stingray's almost 50 years old and it shakes and rattles, but I love driving it." The Corvettes will be on display at Founders Heritage Park on Saturday from 10am to 1pm. Admission is $2 per person or $5 for a family with all proceeds being donated to a Nelson charity.

Inspired by the love Jigsaw Pre-schools students have for animals, teachers have been helping the children learn about how to care for animals. On Monday, the children dressed up as some of their favourite animals and received a visit from Nelson SPCA, who brought with them some cute and cuddly creatures for the kids to meet. The pre-school was also able to hand over two boxes of pet food to the SPCA that had been donated by the pre-school’s families. Their next animal-focused activity will come when the preschool makes a trip out to Mapua Farm. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Great idea tho will be hard to set times to suit people especially on return journey as work finishes at different times. (And I can't imagine many people wanting to hang around to wait for bus after long day at work). Debbie Harvie. About time. Irene Joyce Cassidy. Great idea. Please make it happen responsible authorities. Wesley Olea. Good idea if well-enough supported to pay its own way - if you live this far from your work it is not the job of Nelson ratepayers to subsidise you. Ash Wells. A fella in Wakefield bought a bus and everyone said they would go on it. Nobody did he went bankrupt poor man so it is a waste of
time. Av Nettleton. Yes it should. Great idea. There used to be from Brightwater to Richmond which meant you could catch the one to Nelson if you wanted. Pauline Ann Stott. Absolutely! It’s a no-brainer! The bus service in this town is complete shit! No wonder no one rides the buses...NMIT needs to put on buses as well. All those students who travel in cars all by themselves, and take up hundreds of carparks all day in town need busses too. The councils will sit on this idea for years.. I wouldn’t hold my breath! Frances Minogue. Years ago there used to be a bus service from Belgrove to Nelson - the workers bus left approx 7am from Belgrove then from Nelson in the late afternoon approx 5pm. Bus was usually pretty full. Deborah Knowler.

The Warehouse has been running a nationwide appeal, offering the chance for customers to donate a dollar to the Life Education Trust with each purchase but Richmond staff member Lauren wanted to do more to raise money for the trust so organised a food fund-raiser outside their store. The team sold 116 sausages and managed to raise an extra $313 for the Life Education Trust.

News Lynne Packer and Anne Mitchell, pictured, were among the artists who displayed their work in the Richmond Baptist Church’s How Great Thou ART exhibition at the weekend. Running from Friday to Saturday, the church was the perfect setting for first-time and experienced artists to showcase their work and visitors enjoyed a lovely Devonshire tea as they viewed the paintings and photography. With a gold coin entry, the exhibition fund-raised for the Richmond Family Support Trust which helps families in the Richmond area through Ma’s Place and the counselling support of Parents And Children Together (PACT). Lynne was exhibiting her paintings for the first time and says she enjoyed the whole experience. Organiser Wendy Milson says she was happy with the exhibition and will definitely look at holding more in the future.

Nelson's youngest and oldest get to know each other The cheek-to-cheek grins of the babies at Friday’s Music and Movement session at the Whareama Rest Home matched the large smiles and dancing eyes of the residents in the home’s hospital wing. Each week for the past year, young and old came together as preschool music filled the corridors of Whareama Rest Home in Stoke and Oakwoods Retirement Village in Richmond. The idea to bring preschool music sessions to rest-homes came from Whareama diversional therapist Linda Smaile, when she was studying the benefits of exercise and social connections for the seniors in her care. “Even just a bit of movement can make a big difference and the residents love it, we do a mix of old nursery rhymes and songs that the residents like, and newer

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea…” Psalm 46:1-2, 10 I don’t know about you but I find that sometimes life can be pretty jolly hard. Work can be stressful, relationships can be fragile, mon-

In fact, many of the Psalms were written as the psalmists were going through very difficult and trying times. God, in his wonderful providence saw to it that we could read, relate and learn from the experiences of these godly men as they journeyed with God through the highs and lows of life. One of the Psalms, Psalm 46, is a reminder to all who love God, that even during the toughest of times, he is with us. That he cares for us and that he is willing and able to help us through the battles we face. The writer of Psalm 46
understood troubled times. Many scholars believe that this Psalm was written in view of the siege made on Jerusalem by the very cruel and powerful Assyrian king Sennacherib (705-681BC.) Sennacherib’s wicked agenda was to take over the middle east. History shows that he was prepared to destroy any who stood in his way for example, Babylon in 689BC. Now, despite Sennacherib’s awesome military might, King Hezekiah of Jerusalem, after initially faltering, refused to surrender. King Hezekiah didn’t try fighting
Sennacherib but instead put his trust in God. And God responded to Hezekiah’s prayers by miraculously rescuing him and all of Jerusalem from the impending disaster (see 2 Chronicles 32:1-23, Isaiah 36-37.) The message of Psalm 46 to us today is that God is an ever-present help in troubled times. He wants us to stop facing the dramas of life alone. God invites you to stop striving in your own strength and know the reality of his strength (see verse 10). Be still and know - he is God.

Both the littlies and the oldies really benefit and it's just a great thing to do, I’d recommend it to any mum.” Held by local woman Felicity Yates, otherwise known as Flossie the Balloon Lady, the free sessions are open to under fives with a parent or guardian. Sessions run every Friday from 10am at Whareama and every Wednesday at 1.30pm at Oakwoods. For more information, go to the Preschool Music in Rest Homes Nelson Facebook page.
ey can be tight, mental, physical and emotional health can be fickle and the world around us can sometimes appear like it is in utter chaos! Now, there is encouragement for those feeling overwhelmed by these dramas in a section in the Bible known as the Psalms. You see, the inspired writers of the Psalms were not writing from some ivory tower untouched by pain.

Richmond Rotary’s Pete Glue, left, and Kevin Gear are hoping to attract classic car owners to the Nelson Wine and Food Festival. With the New Zealand Motor Home and Caravan Association rally beginning the following Thursday, many visiting association members have the festival on their to do list before attending the national event. Those with motor homes or caravans are more than welcome to stay overnight at Middle Earth Vineyard on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, at $10 per night, per motor home, provided they are self-contained. The show has even had international interest with holiday makers from as far away as New York and Florida emailing organisers to get themselves tickets for the big day. The Nelson Wine and Food Festival’s vibrant atmosphere is enhanced by an impressive line-up of local musicians who always succeed in getting the audience up and dancing. This year live music will be performed throughout the day thanks to Pete Madsen and family, the Dixie Prix, Cruise Control and the Neal Brothers. The event will also feature an interesting display from the
Nelson Marlborough Classic Motoring Society, including some classic boats. Once again free sunscreen and water will be available throughout the day, although organisers encourage people to be prepared for a full on day of fun in the sun. This includes bringing your own shade solutions and seating whether it’s a deck chair or picnic blanket. Ensuring you organise safe transport home is also essential to finish the day off right, which could mean having a designated sober driver, calling a taxi or making the most of the bus service which will be running people to and from the vineyard. The Great Taste Cycle Trail is also a handy option for those wanting to use peddle power. Buses to Brightwater include departure from Nelson at 10:30am and Stoke at 10:50am, as well as a bus from Motueka via Mapua. Several exciting activities, with low-cost organised parking, will be held right up to the National rally, which takes place from Thursday, February 23, through to Monday, February 27. The everpopular Music in the Mountains kicked things off, attracting around 630 motor homes to Tapawera on January 27, with the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival to follow on Saturday, February 11. Food and wine connoisseurs enjoyed a whole day of culinary delights, although if that wasn’t enough to satisfy their appetite, they can always head out to the Brightwater Wine and Food Festival on Sunday, February 19. The New Zealand Motor Home and Caravan Association is a rather large organisation with around 71,000 individual members across the country, including around 4000 individual members in Nelson/ Tasman, all of whom are eligible to register for the rally and attend the AGM. Things officially kick off on Thursday, February 23, with Richmond Showgrounds playing host to the hundreds of campervans that will converge and set up camp until the end of the event. The Gypsy Fair will also be in town for the weekend, sharing Richmond Showgrounds with the National rally, while the National Motor Home and Caravan Association will be running its own market on Sunday, featuring products made by locals and those visiting in their leisure vehicles. That’s why both Saturday and Sunday will be an open day for members of the public to attend and explore all the sites on offer. Entry is free for both days which start at 10am and run until 4pm. A lot of hard work and planning has gone into the National rally, with the committee forming back
in June 2015. Even with the big day so close, the amount of work to be done hasn’t diminished and organisers would like to say thank you to all those who have given their time to help get things off the ground. Volunteers from Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast have all been involved and will continue to lend a hand until the last motor home has driven away, assisting with everything from parking to sanitation. Everyone that has volunteered has been enthusiastic and committed to making this year’s National rally a great success. The rally is also a hugely family oriented event, bringing together the generations and organisers encourage younger families to head along as well. While those who don’t own a leisure vehicle and who aren’t part of the association are
welcomed to the rally’s open days, there are some great benefits to joining the group that members would be happy to share. More and more motor home friendly towns are popping up throughout New Zealand, offering people overnight accommodation, plus, there are always beautiful and out of the way places that not everyone knows about. These pop stops and scenic destinations are all detailed in the New Zealand Motor Home and Caravan Association magazine, enhancing your exploration of our beautiful country. For more information on the association, visit their website at www.nzmca. org.nz. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a caravan or motor home, or even if you’re not part of the association, come along and checkout what the National rally has to offer.

Murchison’s annual A & P Show is a celebration of the areas rural history, not to mention a chance for the whole family to get together and enjoy the fantastic community atmosphere. A variety of events, activities and demonstrations will highlight rural life in all its glory, so make sure you’re there to enjoy the show’s 97th year. While the Murchison A & P Show is full of popular attractions, the equestrian schedule in particular has become so big that this year, it will run over from Saturday, February 18, to Sunday, February 19. As well as a show of miniature horses, in hand classes and pony club riding, people can also settle in for some impressive horsemanship from those competing in the Horse of the Year qualifying events such as the show ring and rider classes, as well as the regular show jumping and hunter jumping events. If the equestrian competition isn’t quite your thing, Murchison’s A & P Show has plenty more on offer to entertain and delight the young and the old, from fairground rides including merry-go-rounds and bouncy castles, to a wonderful collection of trade, craft and info sites. The kids will also be pleased to hear that Laser Tag is amongst the many activities that will run throughout Saturday. Show day is the perfect opportunity to show off your family pet, so make sure they’re look-

A handful of fantastic exhibitions have also returned this year, including the iconic displays of sheep shearing and wood chopping. If you haven’t seen these guys in action before, it’s well worth a watch and you’re guaranteed to walk away with a new found respect for the strength and fitness in-
volved in each discipline. As usual, the shed will house a fine display of entries in a variety of subjects, showcasing people’s baking skills, their talents in the garden and handiwork with wood or needle and thread. If you’re not one for growing or creating, the shed entries are always an interesting attraction to wander round and include vegetables, preserves, eggs, home produce, homemade wine and cheese, hand crafts, wood work, art, flowers, photography and of course, the junior classes.

From the presidents pen A cornerstone of the club’s movement is the democratic principle of members electing their leaders from within their own ranks, i.e. “governance of the members, by the members, for the members.” Ironically, I am the only member of the current Club Waimea administration to hold office through contested election - all other office bearers were unchallenged so no Lewis Della Bosca vote was required. I do not think this is healthy. I have always believed and stated that elections should be contested, that issues should be debated, that alternative views be expressed, that members should be given a real choice and be asked to choose. Already it is past the middle of February, only three months until our Annual General Meeting and the next election, at which the Vice-Presidency and three Executive Committee positions will be contested. The incumbents are all eligible to stand again and will make that decision in due course, but it is with no disrespect to them that I say I hope they will be challenged. I want there to be more members who feel they have something to offer, who are encouraged to express their views, who want to be part of the governance process and give the voters real choice, because that will be a sign of a healthy Club.

JJ’s Delight during the Interislander Summer Festival Nelson Harness Races.
Harness racing sponsorship a success Wayne Williams Friday, January 13, was the first day of the Interislander Summer Festival Nelson Harness Races.
Club Waimea sponsored Race four at this fantastic race day, which I felt was very well supported and it seemed as though everyone was in great holiday
spirit and enjoyed themselves tremendously. Lots of entertainment, food, drinks, the occasional beer and laughter all added up to a fun day
at the races. Our race was won by JJ’s Delight, driven by B N Orange, and club manager Wayne Williams, had great pleasure in meeting the owners afterwards
for a photo and an ale or two. Thanks to the organisers for a job well done. We look forward to continuing our support of this event in the future.

Greetings, on behalf of Nelson Speedway, I would like to thank Club Waimea for live streaming the NZ Super Stock Teams Championship which was held in Palmerston North over the last weekend. Nelson speedway were unable to run the coverage and thanks to the club and in particular Denise, the local fans were able to watch the racing on their big screen. The Nelson Tigers were up there to race against the top 12 Superstock teams racers in the country. Whilst they didn’t win, they put on a great effort and I’m sure will be back next year. This year the event, which was raced over two nights, was won by the defend-

The growth of Wakefield From a little community in the back and beyond, Wakefield is now a thriving village that continues to grow in the number of residents and businesses. With a vet, pharmacy, bakery, supermarket, service station and garage, that also offer an ATM, a school, hairdressers and a handful of hospitality businesses, you could almost say that Wakefield has it all. Diana Wilkins and her brother John are one of the village’s recent additions, Diana not only purchasing a home in the area, but also establishing a business. “I had already bought a property in Tahuna that I had been working on and was getting ready to move into,” says Diana. “[But then] this house came on the market [in Wakefield] and I thought, I have to
buy it.” After getting to know the area, Diana also decided to establish The Elegant Frog with her brother John. “I have a passion for vintage and my brother is very good at repairing and refurbishing. I felt the need to do something and I felt the need to fill this space because it’s been sitting empty for some time,” says Diana. The shop specialises in pre-loved vintage items which Diana hopes people will enjoy exploring. Diana also wishes to help new home owners with affordable and wellmade furnishings. “To me the old stuff is far better made and if we can recycle it and provide it at a price they can afford, we can make life easier for them.” New home owners are certainly

Wendy Pearson from Tall Poppy Real Estate has lived in Wakefield and sold Wakefield properties for the last 10 years. “The past 10 years has seen slow growth but 2016 saw an unprecedented increase in property prices,” says Wendy. “Most of the houses that went on the market had more than one offer and were under contract within one to two weeks. People are always asking me for bare land sections and there are hardly any available.” Although previously considered a ‘long way away’, many families are now pur-
few villages left now in New Zealand and Wakefield has a genuine village atmosphere that they love,” says Wendy. “The council has recently rezoned semi-rural blocks, allowing them to be developed in to residential sections to

The doors to Champion Kids Early Childhood Education opened in January this year, offering children a world of play, discovery and learning. Owner operators Hana Fleet and Vanessa Gay have done a fantastic job in creating an educational haven for families, Hana holding a degree in early childhood teaching, with over 9 years’ teaching experience, while Vanessa is a registered nurse with a 20-year nursing background and mother of a large family. Both bring different expertise to the preschool and both are passionate about supporting families. Champion Kids Early Childhood Education has been fitted out with some great preschool equipment including a play loft, miniature kitchen setting, a dramatic play area allowing kids to get creative and a fantastic outdoor play
garden. “We pride ourselves on having a great team, excellent resources and an extensive outdoor area which has been designed for the children to explore and discover. The space

focus on readying children for school, as well as providing them with skills for life. While many centre’s offer half or full days, Champion Kids has no minimum or maximum time limit for children’s attendance, which means children can attend for a full day if parents are working full time, or can simply spend a few hours at the centre while mum does the groceries. “Because Hana and I are the owner operators, we can be proactive and respond quickly to the needs of our families,” says Vanessa. “We want to work collaboratively with our families to find out what works best for them.” The team at Champion Kids Early Childhood Education strive to offer children aged 0-5 years the best start in life and look forward to welcoming new families into their fantastic facility.

Local golfers learn from the best Members of Totaradale Golf Club received some one-onone coaching from former New Zealand golf professional Lynnette Brooky earlier in the year, and she’s making a return this weekend. The club was treated to the first exclusive visit in late January after Lynnette organised a break in Nelson with an old friend, who just happened to be a Totaradale member. Lynnette was keen to pass on her advice and experience to other golf enthusiasts, organising with the club to host three days of coaching. “Small clubs like Totaradale don’t have a professional like Nelson does, we’re very much coaching starved, so an opportunity like this for us is just fantastic,” says club captain, Mike Hrynkiw.
Around 24 golfers took advantage of the opportunity to learn from Lynnette over the three days. Each day included a 90-minute practice session on their swing and long game, followed by a session on their short game and putting, before members played nine holes accompanied by Lynnette. The day ended with a question and answer session, focusing on Lynnette’s coaching tips and experience as a tour golfer. “There’s a lot of technical information that hasn’t reached New Zealand and I have done enough research and know emotionally how to play golf,” says Lynnette. “The key for me is to make it effortless, because golf is effortless, when people hit the ball and say “yeah that feels so much easier”, that’s what pleases me.” Members taking part varied
in their skill level, but had one aim, to learn all they could from New Zealand’s former number one female tour golfer. “My golf has not been particularly good and I just felt that this might help things. So far what Lynnette has told us has been simple and easy and extremely effective and it seems to be working,” says Jo Hay. “I suppose there’s a lot of conflicting coaching ideas from professionals and all the rest, every time you look at a website someone’s got a different idea,” says Ron Hay. “Lynnette has quite a good reputation and the opportunity to be coached by her came up so I jumped at it.” Lynnette will be back at Totaradale Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday, February 18 and 19, to host another two days of coaching.

Super Stock title goes begging Jody ‘The Professor’ Scott The Hanmer Holiday Homes South Island Super Stock Series final had more twists and turns than a Stephen King thriller on Saturday. What started off looking like a cruise for series leader, Nelson’s Brett Nicholls, after he won the first heat at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway, quickly became a nightmare. In heat two, Brett was left parked up the wall off the start by club mate Alex Bright. The non-finish left him chasing points. Fellow Nelson driver Shane Harewood took over the series lead with a second and third respectively in the first two races. However, heat three provided the pivotal change in the scope of the series, Brett went chasing revenge on Alex, while Lance Ashton held up Shane initially, meanwhile Jamie Hamilton was ticking over
the laps and points to have a real shot at winning while staying out of the drama. A near miss in heat two with the wayward car of Jason Fletcher was Jamie’s only close call. Alex and Brett eventually clashed down the back straight sending them sideways and backwards. Shane was trying to thread the needle but clipped a car sending him up and over, landing on his roof to effectively end his title aspirations. The 10 car dash went on without Brett and Shane, giving Jamie the series lead after he won heat three and then the shootout. The feature heat had Jamie off pole, he shot off and assumed the race lead, the only way he would lose the title was to be stopped, but no-one had a swipe until the white flag lap when Ken Nolan spun him coming out of turn two. He lost a half a dozen places but not enough to thwart him from

Club champs show plenty of talent Jacob Page

The Tasman Wheelers cycling club held their club championships time trial and road race over the weekend. The time trial near Brightwater on Saturday featured several big names of the sport in Nelson including Tour de France rider George Bennett.
His time over the 27.6km of 34 minutes and 40 seconds proved too hot to handle. Ethan Batt won the boys under-23 section with a time of 38.12 while Michaela Kerr won the women’s under-23 event in 44.14. Britney Kerr won the girls under-19 16km time trial in 25.48. She was 20 seconds ahead of Niamh Fisher-Black, who in
turn was almost four minutes ahead of Marie Peart. Katie Batt and Kaio Lart won their respective under-15 categories, while masters men’s categories were also decided. In Sunday’s women’s road race, Niamh prevailed in the 74km under-19 girls race in two hours 10 minutes and 48 seconds. Karen Fulton won the senior
women’s race while Michaela made it two wins from two attempts in the under-23 category. George won the 82km senior men’s road race in 2.07.25, more than two minutes clear of Brad Tilby with Robin Reid third. Waimea’s Henry Jaine won the under-23 category in 2.10.46, while Finn Black won the under-17 race in 2.10.57.
Family bond to half marathon glory Jacob Page Jessica Young’s journey to competing in her first half marathon has strengthened her bond with her granddad and prepared her for her next career move. Jessica competed in the Buller Half Marathon over the weekend, the culmination of almost eight months of effort. One of the first faces she saw at the finish line was her grandfather, Mick Barrett, who had coached her all the way by setting out running plans, cycling alongside her during training and acting as her water boy on longer sessions. The 21-year-old was hoping to complete the 21.1km distance in under two hours – she achieved that by eight minutes. “I really enjoyed it, running alongside the Buller Gorge was really beautiful. “I’m looking forward to go-

him a call to say I had done it.” Mick says he noticed Jessica needed some guidance a couple of months ago. “I’d helped with some of her police training and she started talking about the half marathon. “That’s more my area because I’d done half marathons in my younger days and run as

a masters competitor.” Mick went about “putting some quality into Jessica’s running. He used short sprints, hill runs and longer distances over time to get his granddaughter in the shape required. “You have to get your body used to going faster, especially when you are tired,” Jessica says. “Granddad always has me up on my toes running up the hills and ensuring I keep the same speed as if I was running on the flat. “We did a 22km run out at Rabbit Island as training and granddad was really good, he’d cycle ahead of me and act as my drink station and give me encouragement as I went past,” Jessica says. Mick says he’s loved helping his granddaughter achieve her goals.“It’s an enjoyable experience training Jess, and it’s kept me mentally active and switched on."
