Queen St speed limit under review Simon Bloomberg Tasman district councillor Stu Bryant is backing a reduction in the speed limit on Queen St, saying “it makes good sense” to lower the limit on Richmond’s main street from 50kmh to 30kmh. Council plans to carry out consultation on the speed reduction, which is aimed at making Queen St more pedestrian-friendly. The street has a 50kmh speed limit but Stu, who is the chairman of the engineering services committee, says that needs to be reduced. “It’s part of the Queen St upgrade and we’re trying to make the street more pedestrian-friendly,” Stu says. “It makes good sense to have the cars going slow where there are lots of pedestrians and children.” Stu says lowering the speed limit could also result in lower traffic volumes on Queen St because it would encourage drivers to use the ring road system around the Richmond CBD. He says lowering the speed limit will change the “whole concept” of Queen St, creating an environment where people will want to sit, talk and interact and

One speedway fan will have a chance to make a bid for glory in next Saturday’s 89.6FM The Hits Demolition Derby at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway and at the same time raise funds for the Breast Cancer

The fund-raiser is being organised by speedway sponsor Milestone Homes which is offering a complete Demolition Derby package to the highest bidder on a Trade Me auction which opened on Tuesday. Colleen Marshall, Richmond. “I agree, I think there should be more 30kmh limits about. Visibility is not great sometimes and people jaywalk across the street. It will also calm the place down a bit.”
John Jenson, Richmond.
Sheryl Wheeler, Richmond.
“They’re taking out the [raised pedestrian crossings], so yes, I think it should be 30 or 40km for safety.”
“I don’t mind driving 30km. People duck across the road and there are shops on both sides, I’d hate to see someone knocked down.”

Stu says the proposal to lower the speed limit was not included in the initial plans for the upgrade and had only “come to light lately.” He says council will hold a public consultation on the proposal, which would apply on the section of street between Gladstone and Salisbury roads and, if it was adopted, will come into effect on July 1 next year.

to ensure cars travel at a safe speed along Queen St will be to reduce the speed limit. “We don’t want Queen St to become a rat-run for all the cars. “It’s going to have wider footpaths and a narrower road surface so it’s not designed for cars travelling at 50kmh. “We don’t want the boys racers hooning up and down the street either.”
cause - it affects so many women.” Adam says Carters has supported the fund-raiser allowing Ray time to prepare the car, a beat-up 1990 Ford Telstar which Adam jokes “deserves to smashed up in the Demolition Derby”. Jacks Tyres, The Sign Man and Flow Drainage have also helped support the project which Adam hopes will raise in excess of $1000 for the Breast Cancer Foundation. “I suppose it would cost around $1000 to get a car ready and enter the Demolition Derby but we are hoping the auction will raise more than that because it’s such a
good cause. Everyone we’ve spoken to thinks it’s a great idea so let’s hope that translates into some good bids. “All the auction winner will need to do is bring a helmet and nerves of steel and have an amazing experience racing in one of the most popular events on the speedway calendar. The car will be gassed-up and delivered to the speedway and will also be disposed of for the auction winner.” Adam says if a business wants to support the fund-raiser and wins the bid, they’re free to paint some their own advertising and signage on the car. He says Trade Me is also waiving its fees for the auction to support the fund-raiser.

The growing popularity of mountainbiking in Nelson region is resulting in a jump in the number of sport-related injuries with almost three times more mountainbikers being admitted to Nelson Hospital’s emergency department than five years ago. Nelson Marlborough Health this week released figures that showed rugby is the most injuryprone sport with 22 to 27 per cent of injuries from 2012 to 2016. However, mountainbiking is closing the gap, increasing from seven per cent of the 1446 sporting injuries in 2012 to 20 per cent of the 1254 injuries last year, to move ahead of soccer [10 per cent], netball [nine per cent] and basketball [five per cent]. Although Nelson Mountainbike Club secretary Paul Jennings says he is concerned about the increase in injuries, he is not surprised because of the explosion in the number of riders. “The number of riders in the club has increased from 800 three years ago to about 2000 this year and we don’t represent every mountainbiker in the Nelson region,” Paul says. “There’s probably around 5000 regular mountainbikers out

Dam deadline getting closer Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Landowners on the Waimea Plains are showing “strong interest” in funding the Waimea Community Dam but the company partially responsible for advancing the funding and construction of dam won’t know for certain if they are “across the line” until July at the earliest. Waimea Irrigators Limited (WIL) has surveyed around 700 landowners on the Waimea Plains asking for expressions of interest in purchasing shares to fund the minimum $15million required from landowners towards the total cost of the proposed dam. Ad-
ditional funding for the $82million dam in the Lee Valley is also likely to come from the Government agency Crown Irrigation Investments Ltd, which has signalled it may provide a $25million loan, and the Tasman District Council which has allocated $25million in its Long Term Plan for the dam. Although there has been a “good response” to the survey, with landowners so far indicating they would purchase over 90 per cent of the minimum number of shares required for the dam project to proceed, WIL spokesperson John Palmer says they still need more support. John says that the more people sign up for shares the more eco-
nomical the scheme will be. John also points out that those who are part of the share purchase scheme will be the only users guaranteed access to water during normal summers. He urges all landowners on the Waimea Plains to seriously consider the implications of not being part of the share purchase scheme. “If the dam proceeds, water permit holders without shares in WIL will have very limited water availability in most seasons and a likely significant land value discount for their property, including smaller lifestyle properties,” he says. John also says landowners need to consider the impact of the
new Tasman Resource Management Plan which will reduce the amount of water available to all Waimea landowners, including farmers, orchardists and lifestyle properties. WIL project manager Natasha Berkett says they have had “very good interest” from a range of landowners, including both large and small-scale irrigators as well as some landowners who don’t presently have a water permit. Natasha says more than 300 of the 700 surveys have been returned so far with around 150 of those coming from irrigators who own five hectares or less. She says that indicates many life style block owners recognise that securing their future water sup-
ply is critical and will add value to their properties. Natasha says the next step for WIL is to issue a Product Disclosure Statement, around the middle of the year. The statement will provide relevant information for investors in the dam and ask them to make a financial commitment to the scheme. “It’s essential that the expressions of interest are now converted into actual sign-up of shares”. The proposed dam will be 52m high and store 13.4 million cubic metres of water which will be released into the Lee River to maintain the level of aquifers on the Waimea Plains that supply water to irrigators and urban users.
What are your priorities for Tasman’s future? We’ve been doing some great work over the past year – come and hear what we are doing this coming year and help us plan for the next ten.

Odie Stratmore-Ching with her son Gabriel Ching, (pictured) and some of the entries from Mapua Primary School into Live Arts’ first exhibition entitled Off the Wall. Live Arts, which was a youth theatre group based in Nelson, is now expanding their shows to the Tasman region and branching out into different forms of art. Odie and Sarah Pumphrey are the leading ladies behind the group, their mission being to offer more opportunities to youth in the Tasman area. Off the Wall was their first event not focused on performing arts, instead taking the shape of an exhibition in which individuals and schools displayed their works of art. Held in the Richmond Town Hall, the exhibition received 33 entries, all inspired by the main theme of time. The exhibition was run over Saturday and Sunday, with auditions for Live Arts’ new theatre show, The Surprising Story of the Three Little Pigs, taking part in the next room. Weather clears for TRYathlon Jessie Johnston The wet weather over the weekend had everyone worried, but with a break in the rain on Sunday families flocked to Tahunanui Sportsfield for the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon. The event is all about encouraging children of all fitness levels to get active in a fun, friendly environment. While 2016 saw 1715 entries from children aged between 7-15, this year was just up on that with 1754 entries. “We are always focused on making sure it’s a wonderful safe event so we did speak to a local meteorologist who gave us good advice, who I would have to say is quite an expert on the weather in the region and it was absolutely ‘to a t’, possibly even a little ahead of when we expected it to push through so we were really pleased,” says Sanitarium representative David Marshall. “We did change the cycle course down to just one lap from the longer course that we run for the older kids. We thought that in the wetter conditions, it wouldn’t have been as safe.” Depending on their ages, the course featured a 50 to 200 metre swim, a four kilometre bike ride and a one and a half kilometre run, before participants passed triumphantly over the finish line amidst the cheers of proud family and friends. Also there to greet kids at the finish line with high-five’s and medals was Ironman triathlete Cameron Brown, Black Stick Anita Punt, track and field athlete Sarah Cowley-Ross, Nelson City councillor Tim Skinner and Nelson MP Nick Smith. Organisers also wish to thank the 212 volunteers who helped make the day a success.

Awards for top volunteers The search is on to find Nelson and Tasman’s hardworking voluntary groups with entries now open for the Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards. The awards, which are run in partnership with the Nelson city and Tasman district councils, are open to all voluntary groups and organisations working to make this area a better place to live. Anyone can enter a voluntary group or organisation for the awards which last year attracted nearly 100 entries. Entry forms for the awards are available from council offices or service centres or can be completed online at Trustpower.co.nz/communityawards. Entries will close at 5pm on Friday April 28.

Temporary dam in Matai River: Contractors have built a dam in the Maitai River while working to strengthen the Gibbs Bridge. The work includes extending the concrete pier 700mm below the river bed supported by a steel framework. The dam will help to keep the river running clear.

Summer harvest fare goes Irish Jessie Johnston As well as celebrating the region's rich harvest, the Sprig & Fern Summer Harvest Fare will enjoy a distinctly Irish flavour this year as it falls on St Patrick’s Day. Tania last year’s Fare. Photo: Jessie Johnston. 011649 and Summer HarvestWhitely Fair PosteratA4_v3.pdf 1 Summer 31/01/2017 Harvest 10:48 Kim Quint from Richmond Unlimited says Nancy Nyberg she’d love to see a sea of green on the night and hopes people will get into the Irish spirit. “There’s a whole lot of really cheap green St Patrick’s items at the different two dollar shops here in Richmond and it’s just a fun thing, really, to get out there and enjoy. “The band will be playing some Irish music and I’m sure that they’ll be dressed up too.” The annual event sure knows how to draw a crowd with last year’s fare successfully entertaining around 4000 people. Organisers are once again expecting large numbers and look forward to delighting everyone with a selection of local food, wine and beer from around 30 stalls. “We always call it the last hurrah for summer and a celebration of the amazing harvest that we have here in the region but it’s also the last chance to come out and do something fun at night in Richmond, before it gets too cold and before daylight saving ends,” says Kim. Organisers have made sure people have plenty of options when it comes to getting home, the Nbus running its normal service, including regular prices, from Nelson to Richmond until 7pm. The Double Decker bus will then take over, providing a free service from Sundial Square, through Stoke, Bishopdale and then Nelson with a return trip through Tahuna. Trips home are scheduled for 8pm, 9pm and 10pm. With plenty of seating available, food to satisfy every palate and free entry, dig out your best Irish attire and head to the Sprig & Fern Summer Harvest Fare. The evening kicks off at 5:30pm at Sundial Square. C

International students learn Maori tikanga Simon Bloomberg A group of Waimea College international students enjoyed immersing themselves in Maori culture during a visit to Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia te Matangi so much that their teacher wants to make the visits a regular part of the students’ calendar. Seven students, from Japan, India and Thailand, attended a powhiri at the Maori immersion school in Richmond last Tuesday. It was the first time the students had experienced Maoritanga and their ESOL (English language) teacher Trish McGee says they totally enjoyed what was “a great introduction to New Zealand’s culture and heritage”. “They were really interested in Maori culture and they loved it,” Trish says. “It was an experience they won’t forget in a hurry.
“They had learned some Maori words and protocol before the visit but seeing it first hand was amazing. It could be something that is extended across all our international students.” Trish says the international students had “lots of help” from one of Waimea’s Maori students, Bailee Tava, who did the karanga. A cultural advisor from Te Piki Oranga, Sonny Aleasana, also helped out, delivering the whaikōrero on behalf of the manuhiri (visitors). Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia Te Matangi principal Lara Wharerau also enjoyed the occasion saying she would like to host Waimea’s international students on a regular basis. Trish agrees, saying Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia Te Matangi “is a wonderful resource” for Waimea College and the visit was great way to build bridges between the two schools and cultures.

Nelson businesses high on confidence Andrew Board US president Donald Trump will have a major impact on our region’s economy this year, according to 18 per cent of businesses that responded to the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce business confidence survey last month. The survey was conducted in early February and canvassed the views of the more than 500 businesses who are members Grant Kerr of the chamber. Most respondents thought the New Zealand general election later this year would have the greatest impact on Nelson’s economy, with 43 per cent feeling that way. Only three per cent thought Brexit would have the greatest impact. The survey also showed that business confidence is extremely high, with 82 per cent responding that they were either “optimistic” or “very optimistic” about the year ahead. Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce chief executive Grant Kerr says the survey shows confidence in the region. “It’s great to see the confidence in the region. From a chamber perspective, we’re trying to continue that for as long as we can.” The survey results come on the back of the latest ASB regional economic scoreboard, which rank Nelson first. “Nelson sits number one nationwide in terms of residential construction growth for the year. Not far behind is the retail sector, where tourists are keeping the region’s cash registers ringing. Given the variety of drivers in play, we suspect that the region’s good times will roll on well into 2017.”

Fallen soldiers rededicated in Brightwater Jessie Johnston This Saturday, the Brightwater community will hold a rededication ceremony for the names of Spring Grove and Waimea West’s fallen soldiers, now located on a rock next to the Brightwater Memorial Gates. The rededication has been in the pipeline for some time, organised by the Brightwater Community Association and made possible thanks to some generous members of
the community. The idea was to create one central point for commemorating Spring Grove, Waimea West and Brightwater’s fallen soldiers as on Anzac Day only Brightwater holds a service, the other being in Wakefield. “It’s going to be great,” says community association member Steph McQueen. “It’s like anything, it’s hard, hard work and then closer to the time everything seems to fall into place.” The ceremony will start with
an introduction from the association’s chairman, Pat Lithgow, followed by the raising of the flag by the Brightwater Scouts. After the singing of the National Anthem, Rev. Andy Joseph will bless the rock and lead a prayer. Speakers, who will then address the crowd, include Tasman district mayor Richard Kempthorne, president of the Richmond-Waimea RSA and community association members Steph McQueen
and Pete Carmody. Students from Brightwater School will read the roll of honour before the rededication comes to a close with Ode to the Fallen. Everyone is welcome to attend the rededication ceremony which will start at 11am, at the Brightwater memorial gates. The stone will feature four plaques with a total of 70 names for both Spring Grove and Waimea West servicemen.

Working from Plans I heard about the great service at ColourPlus in Richmond so walked in with my new house plans with wallpaper in mind. I was very happy with the customer service and range of products with selecting feature wallpaper for the house so it was an easy choice again to get ColourPlus to help me with drapes and blinds for the new build. The team at ColourPlus were knowledgeable and had some great advice using my floor-plans, colour charts and flooring choices to narrow down options, initially from off the plan, through to selecting samples to complement our colours and floorings and importantly fit in with our build budget, finally installing them to a fantastic finish to our new home. I can highly recommend calling it to see the team at ColourPlus for a great product range, friendly and knowledgeable service! – Jane Fairs

Richmond entrance needs upgrade: Am I the only one who thinks the half kilometre of old corrugated iron and paling fences along the Richmond Deviation leading to McGlashen Ave look decidedly third world. This is the main entrance to Richmond, surely council could build an acoustic wall, or at least plant trees to beautify this section of road. With so much effort being put into upgrading Queen St, seems ridiculous not to visually improve this high traffic area. First impressions are lasting. Graham Gibson, Richmond. Volunteers needed for emergency department: I was in E.D yesterday with our wee girl and these ladies were so kind. They bought books for her to read and a much needed cup of tea for me!! Kelly Collins. Hmmm, this could possibly be because we are all very busy working for a living until we die. Janelle Thorpe. Cyclist hit on Annesbrook Drive: Having experienced a VERY close call just yesterday on my bike at the Tahunanui lights, this makes my blood boil on behalf of the injured person on a bike. Car drivers have a duty of care as they are driving a lethal weapon. And yet they are careless and aggressive. Jacqui Irwin.
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz facebook.com/waimeaweekly www.nelsonlive.co.nz
It goes both ways, I've almost hit bikers so many times because they are just as careless. Not blaming the biker, but you can't just blame the driver. Duchaun Tavilitonga Galiki. There are careless drivers on our country's roads as well as careless cyclists, unfortunately the cyclist will almost always come off second-best. And I speak from experience, car versus bike (me). Torn ACL and head injury - before cycle helmets were compulsory. Everyone needs to put the phone down and concentrate on what one is supposed to be doing. Ange Jenkins. I guess that's the risk any cyclist decides to take when they ride on the road. I live on Paton Rd and have seen and experienced a lot of close calls usually at the hills where you're forced to do 10 kmh because it's too dodgy to pass on the blind hills. Tony Johnston. Cannabis plants seized by police: This just leaves the door wide open for more meth in our already cracked out community, great job NZ. Paula Robertson. Meth ruins lives- yes. Cannabis? No. If anything it helps people's lives. I think most the people doing the stealing would be crackheads, not 'stoners'. Gem Bennetts. Good job on the meth utensils.. if only ya got meth instead of
pot. Courtney Byrne. Good work police! Get it all. Cam Scott. Bad drivers: A couple of things that might reduce the bad driving and that is most tourists come here by air. If the airlines make a point of showing our roads on their TV monitors 30 minutes before arrival and pointing out we drive on the left, the only other thing is our councils put signs up frequently advising or pointing to keep left. If nothing is done it will not get better, only more life will be lost. G Barker. Foster Care Awareness week: Think your’e doing a amazing job Julie need more people like you. Donna Warner. Great mother and the bestest friend. You are amazing. Liz Blanchet. Julie you are truly an amazing women with so much love to give. We all miss you at IHC shop. Jill Knowles. Cycling Cycling is a great option for getting to the town centre. Please remember, cyclists must obey the same rules as other motorists, and follow the instructions given by the Stop/ Go workers. Walk your bike if you need to travel on the footpath out of courtesy to pedestrians.
Queen Street remains closed from Gladstone Road up to the McIndoe Place intersection. Other sections of the street are down to one lane at times and parking is limited while contractor Hawkins Infrastructure works its way up the street replacing a fragile 50-year-old cement water pipe.
Bike racks can be found near: •
Richmond Library
•
Pat’s Plaza
The best option is often to use the ring road and off-street parking.
•
Sundial Square
•
Richmond Mall carpark (next to the police station)
Please support our local retailers – they are open for business as usual and the footpath remains open for pedestrian access.
•

Parking All-day parking is now available at the Richmond Showgrounds on Lower Queen Street. If you need parking for an extended stay, please use this option to free up spaces for shoppers and visitors to the town centre to use. There is a P60 time limit on some spaces in the Papps carpark (off Cambridge Street) to help manage extra demand for this car park.

Simon Bloomberg A new scout group in Brightwater is proving so popular that it already has a waiting list and organisers are trying to recruit extra leaders so that even more children can join in the fun. The Brightwater Kea Scout group was formed on February 8 and already has a capacity of 12 children aged five to seven and a half who meet at the Brightwater Scout Den every Wednesday. Scout leader Lee Galvin says the group is proving so popular it has a waiting list of 12 children but they can’t take any more until they recruit more leaders. Lee, who came over from the Wakefield Scout group to set up the Brightwater Keas, says

it’s the first time Brightwater has had a Keas group for at least 10 years. Although there had been a lot of interest from parents to set up a group in Brightwater, Lee says even she was surprised at the number of children who wanted to join. “I used to be a Kea leader at Wakefield and half our kids came from Brightwater, so there was a lot of demand from parents to set up a group there,” Lee says. “We had four leaders in Wakefield so I decided I’d go to Brightwater and set up the group but I didn’t expect it to be this popular. “We have a new trained leader, Jade Double, who came to my rescue because Keas have to have one trained leader for

So we have 12 kids now and the only way we can take more is to recruit new leaders.” Lee says the Nelson zone Kea leader Angela Burke has also been attending the group’s meetings so that more children can attend but they would like more parents to train as leaders. She says parents need to be “vetted” by police before they can become a Scout leader or parent helper to “ensure the kids are in safe hands”. Lee says the group has lots of fun playing games that also reinforce the Scout’s values including caring and sharing. Come in for a quality barista-made coffee New Zealand’s number one retailer of barista-made coffee, Wild Bean Cafe, has some new fans since opening its brand new stores in the Top of the South. BP Head of Retail Debi Boffa says the aim of Wild Bean Cafe is simple - to provide customers with the best possible cafe experience, every single time. “To keep our focus on quality, every year since 2002, baristas from around the country have perfected their flat whites and crafted their finest cappuccinos at the Wild Bean Cafe Barista Competition. “The competition acknowledges the skill and experience that goes into making great coffee and it’s the perfect way for baristas to showcase their talents,” she says. Coffee is judged on taste, smell, presentation, composition and speed but the judges also look for a barista who has the x-factor and makes their coffee stand out. BP Area Manager Darren Coe says the awards are not only the ultimate achievement for Wild Bean Cafe baristas
but they are also a great way of creating a friendly rivalry between regions. “There’s nothing like a bit of competition to bring out the best in people, and I truly believe our baristas in the Top of the South have a great shot at the title this year,” Coe says. “Our cafe teams are locals. They live in the area and they genuinely care about making quality coffee and providing great service. “It’s all about making a coffee that puts a smile on a customer’s face as they leave the cafe – that’s what drives our local team. “We set the bar high because it’s what our customers deserve,” he says. Every Wild Bean Cafe comes with a barista guarantee, so if your coffee isn’t made just the way you like it, you can get another one for free. Wild Bean Cafe Richmond, Blenheim and Haven Road also offer comfortable seating, free WIFI, free newspapers to read while you wait and free coffee grinds that you can use in your garden at home.
Wild Bean Cafe baristas, Paige Moore and Pitria Johnston, sure know how to make great coffee.
Come in and a get FREE barista made coffee on us! Offer is available for one complimentary medium hot beverage from Wild Bean Cafe located at BP Connect Richmond (177 Queen Street), BP Connect Blenheim (14 Main Street) and BP Connect Haven Road (Nelson). Offer excludes variations on standard coffees (eg. f lavour shots, soy milk) and cannot be used in conjunction with any other promotions or offers. Offer expires 31 March 2017. Just a thought... Pastor Donald Irvine Hope Community Church Predictive texting. You either love it or hate it. It’s supposed to make life easier for you by second guessing the next word you might want to use in the sentence you are composing. Because I share a first name with a very high profile person, who is currently very much in the
international spotlight, every time I use my given first name Donald in a txt, the first option that my predictive texting gives me to follow it is Trump and the second is Duck. While both are possible options, for me they are a distraction from the message I had in mind to send. Talking about distractions, and with Easter being less than a month away, I wonder what
the next thing is that comes to mind when you hear the word Easter… eggs or buns? They are certainly appropriate words that could possibly follow the word Easter but like Trump and Duck they are distractions from the real message that Easter brings. The events of the first Easter are historically real and so well documented, but at the same time they are breath-taking in their scope.
Who would have thought that Creator and cross would go together, not by accident but by design. Here’s what we often miss because of the other distractions that bubble to the surface and cloud the Easter message. Here is the heart of it. “God loved the people of this world so much that He gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in Him, will have eter-
nal life and never really die. God did not send His Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent Him to save them! John 3:16-17. Christ died for our sins, He was buried and three days later He was raised to life.” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. Yes enjoy your hot cross buns and marshmallow eggs, but don’t let them distract you from valuing the spirit and message of Easter.

RDA hope to welcome new ‘gentle’ pony Jessie Johnston Richmond’s Riding for the Disabled is holding its annual Summer Fair again this Saturday, hopefully raising enough money to welcome a new addition to their Champion Rd stables. Last year, the organisation was successful in raising the necessary funds to purchase Buddy, “a big strong weight-bearing horse for their heavier clients,” and staff wish to thank everyone for coming along to the 2016 event and supporting them. This year they have their sights set on Jessi, who will be helping some of their smaller riders. At the moment Jessi is being leased by the Richmond RDA, “to see how we get on with her,” says vice president, Catherine Henry. “We’ve got a lot of children that she is giving confidence to because she’s just a very sweet, very gentle natured pony that works brilliantly. [Riders] adore her because she’s so easy and relaxed.” Richmond RDA presently has 14 horses and ponies which are ridden by 71 clients of all ages. The Summer Fair is the organisation’s largest annual fund-raiser and will feature pony rides, a garage sale, sausage sizzle, produce and cake stalls, a coffee cart, apple bobbing, face and nail painting and arena shows including a Western and vaulting horse display. Richmond RDA’s Summer Fair will be held at their stables at 169 Champion Rd from 10am until 2pm. Entry is a gold coin donation.

Mike Pero Nelson Giants are primed for 2017 NBL season. It promises to be a fast and furious start for the 2017 Mike Pero Nelson Giants, not that captain Sam Dempster would want it any other way. leading the competition at the midway point. The Giants, who are the only NBL franchise to be a part of every single season since their inception in 1980, have drawn five consecutive away games through the month of April, including away games on back-toback nights against the Canterbury Rams and Southland Sharks on April 21 and 22. Coach Alan McAughtry says, despite the short build-up, he wants his team to play to win this year. “We want to win, too,””he says. We are working hard five nights a week, doing individual sessions and we are all really putting it in. “The work that has gone in before I arrived needs to be acknowledged. “I know there’s a honeymoon period with every new job, but the
hard work starts now and we want to have a great season.” The local players have remained largely unchanged with Sam Dempster, Ali Granger, Bronson Beri, Tom Ingham, Riley Bensemann, Nic Trathen, Finn Delany, Tyler March and Sam Seelen, all Nelsonbased players returning. Finn has returned from a big first season with the New Zealand Breakers and much will be expected of him in 2017. Alan says the integration of the local and international players “has been first class” and he was expecting the team to gel quickly. Sam Dempster says, despite a shortened preseason, he is confident of a good showing in 2017 given the calibre of players on the roster. “It’s always going to be hard, we’ve had a coach for a week, two imports for a week and one of our starters for a week, but we always pride ourselves on getting ready for the start of the season and I

know the local guys have worked their butts off to get ready for the start of the season.” “We are lucky we have people who have been going hard at the gym, down at the beach." The Giants had two preseason games against the Rams and Wellington Saints in Blenheim over the weekend, which Sam says is always a good measuring stick for where the team is at. “I think those games are about take-aways, what you can learn from each game and awareness of things we need to work on. The score is not so important.” Sam emphasised the importance of a fast start and the value of wins on the road. “We will have to have a fast start but I believe we have the players that are capable of that. “Picking up wins on the road is tough in this league but it’s something we are going to have
to do if we want to give our home fans something to get excited about. “We want to see the (Trafalgar Centre) packed out this year, we’ve got a really good group of guys who are going to play some exciting basketball.” The Giants lost both their preseason matches in Blenheim over the weekend to the Wellington Saints and Canterbury Rams, respectively. Alan says the first-up effort against the Saints was scratchy and lacked the effort he was expecting, but the players bounced back against the Rams to lead the game for the first three quarters before surrendering the lead late. The Giants face the Southland Sharks in Invercargill in Thursday night before returning to Nelson to take on the Taranaki Mountainairs on Saturday night.

From the presidents pen When the fledgling Waimea Town and Country Club voted on July 20, 1971 to be a mixed gender club it was not unprecedented, but it was certainly an indication of the future for the hither-to largely all male chartered club movement. We sometimes fail to recognise the major role women have played in the development of our club. Of the subsidiary Lady’s Lewis Della Bosca Committee established in 1974, five are still active members: Viv Moody, Rosalie Richardson, Ann Ryder, Myrtle Friend and Shirley Friend - ladies, I salute you! Women are an integral part of our many adjuncts, at times individuals have held the highest offices in our club, but considering their numbers and input, overall it is fair to say our ladies have always been grossly underrepresented at the governance table. Of the current administration, the sole lady is Bev Hart, herself a stalwart from the early days. Perhaps it is time to change this...

Comfortmaster is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing heating and insulation businesses. The company has been providing Nelsonian’s with home heating solutions for 18 months but began in the North Island seven years ago.
“The costs were fully and clearly explained and I was free to decide in my own time whether to proceed with the work.
Resident Reg Walker received a cold call from the team recently and invited a salesman around to size up his home.
“The guys turned up when they said they would and they gave a very good indication of how long it would take to do the job. I am a satisfied customer.”
He’s now waiting for his 106sqm of premium ceiling blanket and Green stuff underfloor insulation to be installed. “I’ve got a quote and I’m very happy with it and all we are doing now is just waiting.” Reg’s house is currently heated using a wood fire. He thought about added re-sale value when he made the decision to mount insulation. “When you go to sell a house they ask if it has underfloor heating and all that stuff.” Reg was visited by one of Comfortmaster’s newest recruit Laurence Kirdy.
Marc says Comfortmaster’s Eco Home Project takes a holistic to healthy home solutions. “We look at the heating, ventilation and insulation and create a healthy home triangle. We come up with some options for owners which look at how to get the best out of their home. The Eco Home Project uses nationwide buying power to offer reasonable prices for quality product.

“When it comes to the health of families, we believe only quality products will do.
Laurence has four years of industry experience and joined the company because he believed in the products and the people. “A company with a product offering a 70 year warranty has to be top tier,” he says. Bradford Gold ceiling insulation offers such a warranty and Laurence said while a superior product could cost more, a quality installation is just as important. Another resident, Marilyn Murray, was visited by Nelson area sales manager Marc Stewart. “I was fully informed of the service the company offered,” she says.

Rain victorious in absorbing Super Cup final Jody ‘The Professor’ Scott The Vertex Super Cup final round was washed out on Saturday night, after the climatic feature race on Friday evening changed the shape of the leader board at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. An opening lap incident in the feature left series leader 2nz Richie Taylor parked on the infield watching his points buffer evaporate. Nelson’s Ian Burson was confirmed as a runner after being lent the 3NZ of Shane McIntyre. Ian’s current car has been sold and he was waiting on a new one for next season, Ian was sitting in fourth going into the final weekend and was an outside chance to defend his title, but he too was caught up in the final feature race incident ending his challenge. Ray Stewart from Cromwell took out the feature race win. The points gained put him into the series lead while New Zealand champion Peter Dickson had his first peek at the track. He was impressive despite a few brushes with the wall that scarpered his advance at times, but the points gained in the feature were enough to sneak into second overall. Campbell McManaway was the most consistent driver of the night picking up second in the feature to win the round. The wet weather was a silent victory for Stewart who would claim the Vertex Super Cup with racing abandoned for the final showdown. nal round. The Tasman Thunder were undefeated on the opening night picking up wins against the KB Indians and Greymouth Grizzlies. The Indians beat the Grizzles comfortably in the other race to close within 35 points of the Thunder. The key turning points in the Thunder-Indian race was the rolling of Indian blocker Harley Robb by John Everett.
Brad Neiman used his support cars as cover to take the victory, they then had a comfortable win over the Grizzlies, with Keightley Teece taking the win. The Super Stocks raced best pairs, Josh Nell and Brett Nicholls took the win comfortably. The Youth Ministocks were competing in the Ray White Richmond Ministock Mania. An absolute adventure
Simon Bloomberg
Team Chasing Gloria’s Gus Jennings, Joe MacIntyre and Perry Turner beat Waimea College’s Cameron Jones, Ryan Doyle and Luke Born in the Absolute Wilderness Adventure Race near St Arnaud on Saturday. The three-person team’s race started with a 500-metre trail run from the base of Rainbow Ski-field to the Wairau River, where teams rafted 9km to Chinaman Stream. They then mountainbiked up Beeby’s Knob and had an orienteering stage around Woolshed Flat before biking up to Rainbow Ski-field for an alpine trek followed by a 14km downhill ride to the finish. The winning time was 11hr
3min 42sec with the first women’s team, Adventure Gals’, Catherine Kircher, Ellen Pullar and Freya O’Donoghue, finishing in 12hr 49min 18secs. Defending six-hour champions Waihora Wombelers (Jason Arnold, Gareth Ward and Dave Bailey) won their race in 5hr 9min 34sec with Where’s the Finish’s Matt Galbraith, Martin Green and James Howden, in second and Could Have Been All Blacks’ Rhys Horncastle, Ben Coman and Steve Milson third. The first women’s team was Pam Morris, Jackie MacIntyre and Marjolein Edwards in 5hr 51min 23sec. The 6-hour race totalled 49km over four stages. JRC’s Robbie Swarbrik, Craig Brixton, Jamie Thirkettle won
the three-hour event ahead of the Waihora Pocket Rockets boys team from Tai Tapu School (Lui Arnold, Hamish Sadler, Reece Rush) and Motueka High School girls team Jessie Fa’avae, Davis Sunbye and Kyla Rayward. Race director Nathan Fa’avae says it was “really pleasing to see so many school teams participating in adventure races as they’re significant challenges and quite complex”. “I think they learn a lot. The school teams are not just taking part, they’re pushing the adults really hard, these teenage kids are racing for line honours. “It’s an awesome testament to how strong New Zealand is in the sport internationally, young people racing confidently and

rewards were there, the challenges justified. A lot of people struggled biking up to the ski-field, but the chance to do a hiking stage in the alpine was unique and worth the effort.”

Harris’ return offers golden chance for Tasman Utd Star striker Ben Harris will return to Richmond Athletic this year and Tasman United should do everything they can to get his signature for next season. It has been confirmed that the 26-year-old, who scored for Team Wellington against Tasman in their 5-1 win on Sunday, will return to play for Richmond Athletic in the Nelson division one competition which begins next month. Ben confirmed the move, saying he would return to Richmond by the end of the month and then fly between Nelson and Wellington to complete his commitments with Team Wellington “I’m hopeful of playing a couple of months for Ben Harris Richmond but at some point I’ll head home to England, so I doubt I’ll be there all season.” Ben, who is off contract with Team Wellington at the end of the campaign, says he would be open to playing for Tasman “if the right offer came along”. “I know some of the guys down there and I’m one of those people who never says never to any opportunity so I’d certainly consider it.” Tasman’s debut national league season has had plenty of highs and lows but their late season form which has included back-to-back wins under interim coach Davor Tavich, has probably earned the team a pass mark based on improvement and first year good will. Despite rough patches on the field, Tasman United have proved they can be competitive and, with the largest number of fans in the league, there’s clearly a desire for the team to thrive in the coming seasons, learn from year one and flourish going forward.

Wanderers are set for a big season with all the hard work starting again for the defending Nelson Bays division one rugby champions. For all the talk of a dynasty after their back-to-back triumph last season, the club has kept its collective feet on the

Fraser says like any new season there are new, unproven players keen for an opportunity and he believes the current 27.2cc players are keen to buy into the 230v 4.1kg team philosophy. 6.3L/min Fullback Jesse Pitman says the team is keen to see the end of the pre-season with the warm-
er March weather, and now place more importance on fitness, making it a hard slog to the start of the season. Jesse says he’s confident the team will be competitive, with head coach Sam Gibbens’ ability to get the best out of each player likely to be a major factor in how well the team goes. “It’s been a good off-season but we do have some players away for the start of the season. I don’t think we’re expecting to come out of the gates all guns blazing but as long as we make top four then we’ll be in with a chance. Temporary route change – Tasman’s Great Taste Trail
Classic boat event reservation and speed limit uplift
Tasman’s Great Taste Trail has been re-routed for a short section in Richmond while work is undertaken to protect both the Richmond Resource Recovery Centre and the cycle trail from erosion. From Beach Road, the trail will travel along Fittal Street for 260 metres before joining back up with the permanent trail. A temporary 30kmh speed limit has been introduced on Fittal Street to ensure the safety of cyclists on the diverted route. The temporary route will be in place until early April.
The Rotoiti Power Boat Club will be conducting a regatta involving high-speed power boat racing at Kerr Bay, Lake Rotoiti between 8.00 am and 6.00 pm on both 1 and 2 April 2017.

Tasman District Council’s Draft Schedule of Charges 2017/2018
This is the fourth Moturoa Mission offered to Enviroschool student leaders and they love the activities that the agencies and secondary students set to challenge them.
The Council approved the Draft Schedule of Charges for public consultation at its meeting on 2 March 2017. The Draft Schedule covers the year from 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2018. The full Statement of Proposal is available for viewing on our Council’s website at www.tasman.govt.nz and during normal office hours at the following Tasman District Council Offices and libraries: • Richmond Office, 189 Queen Street, Richmond • Motueka Office, 7 Hickmott Place, Motueka
The students learn lots and meet educators and Council staff who can help them with their school environmentalcommunity projects.
Positive Ageing Expo Friday 31 March, 10.00 am – 3.00 pm at the Headingly Centre, Richmond Come along to the popular annual Positive Ageing Expo, a showcase of the recreational, health and social services available in the region for retirees and those planning for retirement. With more than 70 stallholders, the expo has plenty to offer anyone interested in making ageing a positive experience. The expo attracts crowds of more than 2000 most years, and has received a TrustPower Community Award commendation.

Soon there will be a new way to apply for a building consent online.
• Murchison Office, 92 Fairfax Street, Murchison • District Library Queen Street, Richmond
We invite members of the building industry to join us on Wednesday 22 March at 5.30 pm in the Tasman District Council Chambers to find out more about the improvements we are making to the building consents process.
• Motueka Library, Pah Street, Motueka • Takaka Memorial Library, Junction Street, Takaka Submissions are invited on the Draft Schedule of Charges, and must be received by 4.00 pm on Tuesday 18 April 2017.
Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council are two of more than 20 councils involved in GoShift - an exciting initiative to make the building consents process simpler and faster. GoShift is supported by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).
Submissions may be made online at www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback or delivered to your local Tasman District Council office.
Water restrictions lifted Water restrictions have been lifted in urban and rural areas on the Waimea Plains. Recent rain has replenished river levels and groundwater levels will improve.
About 1000 voluntary groups from around New Zealand enter the Trustpower Community Awards each year. It’s a celebration of just how much volunteers mean to our country. No matter how big or small, if your group, club or society has volunteers, it has earned the right to be involved. Anyone can enter a group ... groups can even enter themselves! Entries for the Nelson Tasman Trustpower Community Awards are now open. Register online or visit your local Council for an entry form. www.trustpower.co.nz/communityawards

Enquire at Richmond Library or phone 03 543 8500.
Under the Revenue and Financing Policy, Council can set a Schedule of Charges to recover some costs associated with our Council services. Some of these charges are set by statute, and others by the Council. All charges are reviewed each year to determine whether they need to change or not.
Volunteers are at the heart of every community – dedicating hours of time and energy every year to making their community a better place to live.
Further details for these and any new events are online at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/maritime-events.

Everyone is welcome to attend our public meetings. There is a public seating area where you can observe the meeting, with many of the meetings having a ‘public forum’ providing an opportunity to speak to the meeting if you wish. At the beginning of ordinary meetings up to 30 minutes is set aside for public forum. Each speaker is allocated five minutes. You don’t need to pre-register your intention to speak – just take your turn when invited by the chairperson. These presentations don’t form part of the formal business of the meeting – a brief record will be kept of the matters raised. Any matters requiring further investigation may be referred to staff by the Chairperson.
