RARING TO GO: Dave and Pauline Richards say they are “so happy” the local community is getting in behind their son, cancer-stricken V8 supercar driver Jason Richards. ‘We’re so humbled and proud’ Jason Richards’ parents support racing fundraiser Jason Richards doesn’t play a very good victim. But the amount of support the Aussie V8 supercar driver has attracted – from every top Formula One driver to three local mates – has humbled him and the entire family, say his parents. Thirty five year-old Jason, a born and bred Nelsonian, is fighting an extremely rare and aggressive form of cancer that “gets worse every
day”. His medical expenses are skyrocketing as he scrambles to find a cure amongst a list of experimental drugs, one injection he had cost $2000 alone. Fundraisers are being held around the globe, including donations from Formula One and V8 Supercar drivers, to this Saturday’s fundraiser held at ProKarts in Tahunanui. The fundraiser is being organised
by Jason’s childhood friend Tony Dyer, along with mates Brendan Gridley and Nick Fowler and includes a Bathurst style race on the ProKarts track, with live commentary. The day will also feature a car show and various other activities including a never-before seen video of Jason, thanks to Channel Seven

Crossing ‘an accident waiting to happen’ FROM PAGE 1 school travel plan, a walking school bus was formed to help the children travel to school. However, the congestion is just one of the issues Rachel, and other residents, have with the road. The traffic island in the middle of the crossing is so small that walking school bus members have to cross in groups, as they cannot all stand in the middle. “All it will take is a kid with their scooters to
make a mistake with a logging truck coming along and they’ll get squished.” She says she has witnessed “near misses” on the road. Sarah says her biggest concern was crossers not having enough time to react to the oncoming cars traveling north on the bendy Whitby Rd. And it’s not just children struggling to cross the road, elderly residents must cross the State Highway just to get to the medical centre, she says.
Jason Richards’ parents support racing fundraiser FROM PAGE 1 in Australia, bouncy castles for kids and a sausage sizzle. Jason grew up in Nelson and comes back often to visit his parents who live in Richmond. Dave and Pauline Richards say they are humbled that locals would put so much into helping their son. “It’s just something we never expected; there are no words for it. To me it’s just amazing. I think the fortunate thing for us is that Jason doesn’t have enemies and people like him so want to help him,” says Pauline. Dave says his son, a husband and father of two young girls, is somewhat embarrassed by the attention after being more used to spending time and money giv-

The front page race is on Who do you think should win it?
Out of more than 60 entries, three lucky people have been randomly selected to tell us what to put on our front page. And you get to decide who wins. Three weeks ago we launched a competition to win control of our front page; with readers able to select what story they want us to report on and photograph. The competition sparked a massive response from our readers, with over 50 people writing “I want your front page” on our Facebook page and a dozen emails and letters to the office. Now it’s time to pick a winner and in the spirit of the competition, we are handing the decision over to you.
We have randomly selected three names out of the entries and asked them to briefly tell us what story they would like to see on the front page, see below for this. To vote for what you would like to read, go to our Facebook page, find the entry you like and “like” it. The entry with the most “likes” wins the front page of Waimea’s only locally owned and operated newspaper. If you really want to vote but aren’t on Facebook, simply email editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz and tell us what your favourite is and we will add your vote. Voting closes at midnight on June 22 with the front page to appear on our June 29 issue.
Finalist number 1 Finalist number 2 Finalist number 3 Tracey Aindow I am one of the parents of the Waimea College 10A netball team girls. Last year the girls won the South Island Secondary School's tournament in Christchurch and the U14 rugby team had a similar season. Waimea College sports director Daniel Hobbs has suggested the two teams aim to enter the Southern Skies Tournament in Brisbane in July 2013. Being able to promote our 'cause' on the front page of the Waimea Weekly would be an amazing opportunity. To vote for Tracey go online to Facebook and “like” the post with her name, or email editorial@ waimeaweekly.co.nz.

Richmond homes the target of burglary spree A spate of burglaries in Richmond has police warning residents to improve security of their homes or face being victim to another break in. Since mid-March there have been 13 reported burglaries in Richmond, all within a 500 metre radius of Waimea College. And thieves are sure to be having a whale of a time on a stolen go kart, taken from a locked van on Ranzau Rd in Hope last Wednesday night. Peter Ashton says it was hard to tell his five yearold son Oliver that the go kart they had built together had been stolen. Although it was constructed out of “relatively inexpensive materials”, Peter says a lot of time and thought went into the kart and it was “shocking” to think someone could take a home-made go kart. “You hear of it happening, we’ve had friends burgled around Christmas time, from cars to businesses and houses. I’m hoping it will turn up because it is quite unique.” A reward is being offered for any information provided to police on the whereabouts of the unique go kart and Peter says it would be great to see the go kart back in one piece, or even in bits. “It’s quite disturbing how often this sort of thing happens; I had a ute stolen from outside a property in Richmond a couple of years ago, so it’s

clear people are making a lifestyle or habit out of it, it’s pretty sad.” Peter and his family do agree with what police recommend – “make sure everything is locked up. You can never be too safe, if it’s not a kart it might be your house.” Police say thieves are on the lookout for cash and small electronics like Mp3 players and digital cameras and have yet to be caught and are now calling on the public to help, phoning straight away if they see anything suspicious. Most of the break-ins have occurred in the evening or overnight and follow a similar pattern says police spokesperson Lisa Colville. “The offenders are forcing their way in through windows and appear to be targeting houses where no one appears to be home.” In some cases offenders have knocked on the door of a targeted house and asked to use the telephone. “We urge residents to make sure your house is securely locked and make your home look as if someone is home,” says Lisa. Police say residents seeing any unusual activity should call right away. “Often we get phone calls the next day but that is no good, we need people to call us right away,” says Lisa. The Richmond station is now manned 24 hours a day, if you do see anything suspicious, please call the Richmond police station on 543 9500.
STOLEN: Peter Ashton and his son Oliver, 5, were shocked to discover Oliver’s go kart had been stolen on Wednesday night. Insert, Oliver and his home-made go kart. A reward is being offered for any information provided to police.

Another quake hits but local gets out Teresa Hattan
Wayne Bowen spent Sunday night expecting the earth to move. But it wasn’t until Monday afternoon, while in Christchurch organising a sports exchange for Salisbury School, that Wayne was thrown from a classroom by another teacher and told to stay outside. The sports co-ordinator was in Christchurch earlier this week as several large aftershocks shook the city to its core. Wayne now says he doesn’t want to go through anything like that again. “The first one was scary, it rumbled and just built up finally there was a big crack and a jolt at the end of the rumble, that was horrible.”
Later Wayne was in the middle of giving a presentation just before lunch at Allenvale School in Papanui, just five kilometres from the city centre, when the second, bigger quake hit. The school visitors were told to get outside as quickly as possible and the school was shut straight away. “Everyone down there has become well rehearsed at making sure everyone is safe.” Wayne says the whole experience was horrendous. “I don’t want to go back down that way but I do want to get the [Christchurch] kids back up here as quickly as we can to give them a bit of time away. I think they need it after that lot.” The people in Christchurch have become
so connected to the aftershocks Wayne says that many of the students were trying to estimate the size of the shocks that hit earlier. Desperate to leave earlier than booked Wayne says Air New Zealand were fantastic on Monday evening. They were able to swap his flights and get him home to Nelson that night. Yesterday Prime Minister John Key was asking people to not flee, but Wayne says he had had enough and wanted out.. “When a plane shudders now, that’s nothing, I no longer worry about turbulence and now I’ve been through an earthquake like that I can get on a plane easy.” It was very BACK HOME: Richmond’s Wayne very scary and it makes sunny Nelson the Bowen was in Christchurch on Monday. LETTERS
TO THE EDITOR
Most Wednesday’s I look forward to reading the Waimea Weekly. However, today I was appalled when I saw the very disturbing photo on the front cover (Waimea Weekly, 8 June). The image of a very dead deer with young children was not acceptable. I am not against sustainable hunting for food. However, the image showing small children who are too young to fully understand the reasoning behind killing is too much. What message are we portraying when we show this picture. Obviously not “Bambie” the fawn and star of a Walt Disney children’s classic. Would it not be better to do an article on Natureland promoting the care and nurturing of animals. Our children should learn to love and respect animals not kill them. Leanne Gambell, Richmond. In Tasman we live in a rural area where activities such as hunting and hunting competitions are common place. Our job as a newspaper is to report on the news, not create it. Your letter implys we should censor the news, we will not. Editor.
Increase in rates comes in under budget Tasman District Council have released its rates increase, confirming the figure has dropped from around seven per cent to just over six. This means Richmond residents with a house valued at around $450,000 will see an increase of $142.39. These decisions will now go forward to the council meeting held at the end of the month for formal adoption of the rates.Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says council understand the current difficult economic climate as the district comes out of a recession and believe they have worked extremely hard to reach this end result.

Richmond centres health check ‘top notch’ Richmond medical clinics are top notch, with a second in as many months being given a golden seal of approval. Cambridge St Clinic joins Washbourn Medical Centre after recently being presented with Cornerstone accreditation, which brings practices like these two local clinics up to a high standard. “We have been presented with this award and it proves we provide a consistently high quality of service to our patients,” says centre manager Jane Green. Cornerstone accreditation is nationally recognised and Jane says it took a lot of hard work and effort from the entire team to reach this result. “We’re moving premises so we hope to continue to build on our service when we move to the new location in July.” The facility will be moving to the Lower Queen St Health complex next month and will be rebranded as the Tasman Medical Centre. Wakefield Health Centre and Richmond Health Centre are the other local medical clinics who have received Cornerstone accreditation. Once a practice is accredited, it lasts for a three-year HEALTH CHECK: Julia Gorrie, Andy Wilkinson, Dr Pip Reeve, Chanel period and the practice can then McGlashen and Jane Green from the Cambridge St Clinic are thrilled to receive decide to re-engage for a second cycle of accreditation. RDA nominated for award
Richmond’s Riding for the Disabled has helped one little boy get up on his feet. For Sarah Whittle, the organisation which she has nominated for the Trust Power Community Awards has been able to provide her two year-old son with improved co-ordination and upper body strength. For Thomas to be able to sit up on a horse confidently means a lot to Sarah, which is why she nominated Riding for the Disabled for the community awards. Mak joined Women’s Institute in England in 1950 and then the Hope Ranzau group in 1983. “Mak has been a staunch member of the Institute and has held positions as president, secretary, treasurer and committee member. She also served on the Nelson Federation. Mak has been a valued member during this time, a total of 60 years. She now has a good service badge and long service certificate,” says Nelson Federation’s Judy Simpson on presenting Mak with her award. Margaret, Betty and Mak have served in many executive positions and between them have completed around 170 years continuous service to the Women's Institute movement.

Town & Country Vet is excited to be working closely with Urban Tails and helping them to provide the highest standard of animal care. We are on hand to provide advice and support to Jenny and Jo and wish them luck with their new venture. TAILS TEAM: Jo Gordon and Jenny Pollitt with Urban Tails new look. Stop by for a visit to get professional advice on your pets’ needs. Under new management Urban Tails has been unfolding over the last two months in the Pet Shop formerly known as ‘Pet Essentials’. As the former pet store chain ceased to trade in the South Island there became the opportunity to provide a new direction for the Richmond Pet store. Two local veterinary clinics, namely The Richmond Vet of 99 Salisbury Rd and Town & Country Vet in McGlashen Ave knew that Jenny Pollitt, who was a key person in the background of both clinics, would be the ideal person to provide new direction to this business. Jenny has taken up the challenge to create a pet store with a difference Having extensive experience in both veterinary
practices, Jenny also has established, owned and operated a well known local pet boarding facility on top of being a successful dog breeder. She has identified the need for a pet store that can provide a reassuring quality of advice and service that is so important to pet owners. To achieve this Jenny has employed qualified, vet trained staff. Jo Gordon, a qualified vet nurse has recently joined Jenny and is continuing to work as a vet nurse as well as assisting at Urban Tails. One thing that all pet owners have in common is their desire to do the best for their pets and to provide the best care possible. Often owners will need a little reassurance that they are doing a great job and also need just a few pointers on what else can make a big difference in their pet’s

Traveling this far can often be financially difficult for small country clubs and would not be possible without the support of families, club sponsors and the ongoing fundraising done by dedicated committee members. Chatham Cup clash like deja vu for Richmond Phillip Rollo
TIGHT DEFENCE: Ranzau School’s Kendall Shuker was a little annoyed a player from the Henley Slammers kept getting in the way as she tried to shoot a hoop on Friday night. The teams met as part of the Mini Ball league held at Saxton Stadium every Friday. Photo: Teresa Hattan.
A knock-out, winner takes all clash against Coastal Spirit may feel like deja vu. But this season’s Richmond Athletic side is packed with much more firepower than the one that lost 4-5 in the two-leg promotion playoff last year, the last time the two teams met. Richmond Athletic host Robbie’s Premier League side Coastal Spirit in the third round of the Chatham Cup at Jubilee Park this Sunday. But coach Steve Bignall says the match is not about getting revenge, it’s just one more step in a historic Chatham Cup campaign - a win would give Richmond qualification to the next round and mark its highest finish in New Zealand’s oldest football tournament. Richmond won’t be holding back either, after knocking off rivals Nelson Suburbs 2-1 two weeks ago. “This is
cup football and it’s what we did against Suburbs, we went for it,” Steve says. He says drawing Coastal was not the biggest talking point, but getting the home-ground advantage. “I think it’s important that people see this standard of football and where we’re at. Obviously we’d like to measure ourselves against the Mainland teams and this is the perfect occasion for us.” The game will also double as club captain Joe Green’s final game as a player before taking up a managerial role at King’s Lynn in the United Kingdom. Davi Gonzalez Maciel is likely to be deployed on the vacant left wing. Steve rejected claims the side had signed former Southend United defender Che Wilson, despite the club’s Wikipedia page stating otherwise. “If it happens it happens, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.”
Sports In BrIef RUGBY: The Waimea College 1st XV lost 31-3 to St Thomas’ in Christchurch over the weekend and now aim to be top of the bottom eight. Manager Jim Matthews says the boys didn’t really “fire up” for the game. “They were big opposition and we tend to have one week on, one week off.” At the time of print the side were unsure of where or who they were playing this weekend to start the second round. CROQUET: Richmond Croquet Club member Jarrod Coutts has been selected in the Under 21 Golf Croquet New Zealand representative side that leaves the country on June 20 for the U21 World Championships in Hunstanton, north east of London. RUGBY: The Wanderers division two side took on Nelson at Neale park over the weekend, coming out on top 32 – 6. MOTORCROSS: The Top of the VMX club is holding the third round of Mainland series. Round one of this starts this Sunday at Linkwater with classes from Pre 75 to Pre 86 and Juniors plus classes in-between. Sign-in is from 8.30am. For enquiries visit sportsground. co.nz/totsvmx or phone Brent Daniel on 027 224 7878.

Sport ATTACKER: Richmond Wakatu Hotel’s Moana Forbes picks up valuable ball in the mid-court. Photo: Andrew Board.
After all that rain it’s no wonder punters turned out in their droves at the Richmond Park raceway on Sunday for the second day of the Winter Cup. Friday was rather miserable, but Sunday saw around 2,000 people pass through the gates, all the while making a much needed donation to Hospice. In total $1721 was raised for the local charity. Nelson Harness Racing committee member Bill Monk says Sunday was a great day to head to the races. “The club would just like to thank the Nelson public for making Sunday such a great day.” On course betting was up $23,000 from last year’s event, with $103,000 being spent on course all together. Off course betting, which are bets made through the TAB, didn’t go so
It was a good two days at Saxton Stadium for Richmond Wakatu as they recorded two wins from two in the first weekend of the Tasman Trophy Grade 2 between Nelson and Marlborough. In their first game SMOG Stainless Steel were very much in contact after fifteen minutes, being 13–16 in arrears. Richmond moved up a gear with wing attack Moana Forbes doing a power of work off the line, with an astonishing amount of centre pass receives. She delivered pressure free ball to her shooters Nicky Rampton and Kathleen Thornalley, who converted with relative ease. Richmond’s timing through court was “spot on” as the defence turned over ball - there were great straight lines by middies Lisa Book and Sharon Finch. Richmond continued their revolving substitution policy with seven changes to go on to record a 69 – 50 win. The match up against Wairau Jetz was a walk in the park for Richmond Wakatu as they hammered home a resounding 73 – 33 victory. Richmond scored 16 goals
well but Bill says this is a sign of the times. “Not many clubs are doing anywhere near $100,000 so this weekend’s result was great.” Best performance from the locals was Ian Thomas’ Gunman driven by his son Jason, who placed second on both Friday and Sunday. The trio will be heading to Blenheim this weekend where they hope to continue this good form. Winner of the Pine Industries Winter Cup was Canterbury driver Stephen McNally and six-win mare Jazmin Robyn. Stephen crossed the finish line more than a length in front of favourite River Field. Owners of the horse Graeme Edgar and Michelle Kennedy say they are thrilled with the win and will be taking the Cup home, all the way down south to Tapanui, near Gore.

in the first period and a consistent 19 goals in each of the other three quarters. Wairau had no answer for Richmond’s slick play through court with centre/wing attack Lisa Book having a sizeable say in the proceedings. Richmond had an abundance of ball, with 78% of the 94 shots converted by Kathleen and Nicky. Goal defender Amanda Springer was having a great game before retiring injured with a dislocated finger. Kat Jones was the “jack of all trades” as she donned no fewer than three bibs to have her versatility on display. It was a tough day at the office for Waimea College as they competed in Grade 1 section of the Tasman Trophy. Waimea were without key players Zoe Walker (on South Island volleyball duty) and the hard working goal attack Kelsey Whiting was out injured. Waimea had some enterprising passages of play, however they went down to Central Men 36 – 72 and SMOG Master Plastering 38 – 63.

Imports learn new style of rugby thanks to WOB Teresa Hattan
Three overseas imports have all made a valuable contribution to the district’s biggest rugby club this season. Argentinean Facundo Borelli and Japanese players Masa Toyota and Taiki Koyanagi say they have been enjoying life in Nelson and especially the atmosphere at Waimea Old Boys. The three players were on exchange with the Canterbury Rugby Union but were sent to Nelson after February’s earthquake. “Waimea Old Boys were offered the players and we took them with both hands,” says division one forward coach Rik Taikato. Facundo played for the Argentinean Under 21 squad who competed at the World Cup in Australia in 2001 and Masa played for the Japanese squad for the 2009/10 season. The young men have been in New ZeaIMPORTS: Facundo Borelli, Riki Hoeata, Masa Toyota, Kieran Williams and Taiki Koy- land playing rugby for one season and anagi have been welcome imports to the Waimea Old Boys club this season. Thirds at top of table after Stoke win Brent Stewart
This week’s game saw the Waimea Old Boys thirsty thirds line up against old arch rivals Stoke in a game that always provides a good spectacle for the crowd. This week’s games saw a repeat of last week where first blood went to Waimea after just nine minutes in the form of flying winger Richard Lisette notching up yet another try. The difference this week match was the Waimea side hitting straight into the game from the whistle, without their telltale 10-15 minutes to warm up like previous weeks. The match looked set for a good battle with a lot of the play bouncing between both 22’s and the up-front big boys having a right ol’ tussle. Stoke were rewarded with a penalty after some devious forward play
from WOB when hard on defence on their own 22. Stoke showed their intentions for the game when their lynch-pin halfback kicked for the sideline. Waimea didn’t get a good set from the lineout and the Stoke forward pack pushed their way over for a much celebrated forward try. Stoke number nine couldn’t convert from out wide, they were duped again when some 10 minutes later he had to leave the paddock injured, leaving a large hole in Stoke’s game play. The rest of the first half saw Waimea get the set play sorted and the backs, who appeared to have the wood on the opposing numbers, strung some good moves together resulting in the next two try’s to John Taylor and Josh Stobie. Having Dad on the sideline must have ‘jinxed’ WOB first five Jay Wright as he missed both
conversions and tainted his 100% record from the previous week. Last play of the first half left Stoke to kick a penalty to go to the break with some pride – unfortunately the opportunity was missed and the score at the break was Waimea leading by 17-5. The second half was also a repeat of last week’s game with Waimea’s other winger Trevit Anitoni gathering an intercept from a Stoke move and sprinting the 55 metres to dot down under the post in the first 30 seconds of the half. Waimea continued to press on well with the final score reading 34-5 in their favour. The division one side drew against Huia 13 all and the division two side managed to topple Stoke 17-8. The women were the only team to lose this weekend, missing out to Stoke 22-8.
been fish and chips and hangi, along with a nice cold Speights. Waimea has also been lucky enough to gain Riki Hoeata from Taranaki and Kieran Williams from Te Aroha for the remainder of the season. The pair moved to Nelson at Easter and both now live in Richmond. Riki has been announced in the Makos squad and Kieran has been doing a bit of training with the provincial side. The guys say they are loving it at Waimea Old Boys and are hoping the division one side can make it to the semis and then on to the finals. Rik says the acquirement of overseas players “just happened” but they will always try and work with local players first. “But if we have a shortage with a few positions we’re not frightened to go looking overseas.” Imports like Facundo, Masa and Taiki are a huge benefit to clubs like Waimea Old Boys, as they can see how passionate Kiwis are about rugby.

It gives us an opportunity to make sure they are rewarded with the thanks they deserve for the long-term outstanding service they have given. In May each year Tasman District Council calls for nominations from the public for the community awards. Nominees must be residents of Tasman District to qualify. Nomination forms are available from all Tasman District Council offices and Libraries and give an outline of the type of information you need to include. Nominations close on 30 June 2011. Changes to kerbside rubbish bag pricing Tasman District Council will be introducing an additional, larger kerbside rubbish bag from mid June 2011. Residents surveys have indicated that while smaller bags prove economical for smaller households, there is also demand for a larger option. The new yellow bags will hold 60 litres, one third larger than the existing 45 litre bags. The bags will be sold individually and in packs of four and will be sold at Council offices and the usual outlets across the District. Initially the bags will retail at Council offices at $1.80 each.
