New major sponsor for speedway Simon Bloomberg

Milestone Homes Nelson director Simon Collett has always been a speedway fan, regularly attending meetings at the Top of the South Speedway and even putting the pedal to the metal in the Demolition Derby. So it’s no surprise that Milestone Homes decided to contact the Nelson Speedway Association when it was looking for a club to sponsor earlier this year. And the end result of that initial

“We thought speedway was a good fit too because it’s a family orientated club that attracts our target market. It’s also really popular in Nelson and has a high profile site, so it was exactly the kind of club we wanted to sponsor.” Nelson Speedway Association president Wayne Martin says they are delighted with the new sponsorship after raffling the naming rights to the track for the last two seasons. Wayne says the sponsorship gives

In fact, I’m starting to worry about the whole set up the way the commercial activities in council are run.” Councillors Judene Edgar and Mark Greening also criticised the lack of transparency surrounding the budget blowout. Judene said it was astounding that “you can suddenly get to this stage and say it could be $500,000 or so over budget” after the Shed 4 building was opened in December. Mark said “council does not tolerate overspending” and supported a resolution, that was later passed, that council should stop any further capi-

Chief executive Lindsay McKenzie and mayor Richard Kempthorne downplayed the overspend with Lindsay saying that all the questions would be addressed in the June 30 report. Lindsay said he was “not prepared, at this point, to make any judgement, prudence or otherwise, about the commitments until I see the explanations as well”.

Lindsay said there had been an agreement to wait until the report was released before the issue was discussed, but Judene disputed that statement. “Nothing has been agreed to and I’m a little surprised that it can take this long to know about all of these problems,” Judene says. “From the opening of the building in December to now, it’s been six months and possibly $500,000, which seems like a lot of money and lot of time for a lot of we don’t know.”

Wayne also says the timing of the new sponsorship deal “is good for us because we don’t get any income over winter and we still have to pay the bills”. Local kayaker thought he was going to die

Why pay more than you have to, to get your house sold ?

Cherie Howie/NZ Herald Former Waimea College student Jethro Nicholson feels afraid when he crosses the deadly Grey River Bar in an 18 metre fishing boat. On Saturday afternoon, he – inadvertently – took on its power in a 1.5m kayak. It nearly ended his life. Dramatic footage posted online showed the 22-year-old local man fighting for his life after a decision to take his kayak onto the Grey River almost ended in tragedy. In the footage, filmed by Greymouth artist Brian Hunter, Jethro is shown calling for help as his kayak gets within about 10 metres of the bar next to the Southern Breakwater Viewing Platform. Soon after he makes the decision to jump out of his kayak, but a wave prevents a friend pulling him to safety. Several harrowing minutes follow after the commercial fisherman – clad in trousers, merino jersey, coat and an uninflated lifejacket – fights for his life as waves surge over him. Jethro was eventually pulled to safety when two friends and a passerby threw him a life ring,

Exhausted, he gasped for breath as one of his rescuers dragged his body to safety. Jethro told the New Zealand Herald he hoped others would learn from his “dumb arse” mistake. “What started off as a good idea turned into a very bad idea.” After entering the water at the Port of Greymouth, about 1.5 kilometres from the bar, he saw a mate downstream. “I got a bit close obviously … I basically got into a s*** spot and ran out of energy.” Realising he would eventually end up at the bar, where death was certain, he made the decision to bail from his kayak. But a wave washed him away from

a friend’s outstretched arms. Unable to reach the tag of his manually-inflatable lifejacket, and choking at his jersey and coat pressed against his neck, waves pounded Jethro under the water several times. He thought he was “a goner” until his two friends and bystander dragged him to safety using a life ring, he said. On shore, but exhausted, Jethro could barely move. “I had absolutely nothing left. They definitely put themselves at risk. What can I say? They saved my life today. I’m grateful.” His temperature had dropped to 32C so he was taken to Greymouth Base Hospital, but released a few hours later.

Husband of 40 years abused by wife ‘daily’ An elderly Nelson man has had to leave his wife of 40 years after daily “emotional, verbal and physical abuse”, Waimea Weekly has learned. It is the latest elder abuse incident involving a family member, which Age Concern Nelson Tasman says make up more than three-quarters of elder abuse cases. About half of abusers are adult children. The man, who we will call “Mr Smith” to protect his identity, told Waimea Weekly via Age Concern that he was his wife’s full-time carer and had felt responsible for continuing to look after her. But he had to start barricading himself into his bedroom at nights to avoid the abuse. He says the ongoing abuse was having an increasingly poor effect on his own mental and physical health. “I was highly anxious, nervous, lost a lot of confidence and was depressed. I had high blood pressure and had even taken up smoking again because of the stress. I felt like a prisoner in my own home,” he says.

of respect for the older person, for their quality of life and for their needs.” Age Concern Nelson Tasman is putting on several activities to mark Elder Abuse Awareness Week.

I felt like a prisoner in my own home. - “Mr Smith”.

Mr Smith says his wife’s actions also spread to their friends who she would verbally abuse and make unfounded accusations against. One friend even went so far as to put out a restraining order against her. That was when Mr Smith sought help from Age Concern, which was able to help him move into a new house. This week is Elder Abuse Awareness Week and Age Concern Nelson Tasman’s Mal Drummond says he receives approximately 100 referrals of elder abuse and self-neglect every year, including financial, psychological and physical abuse. But he is hopeful for a change in “disrespectful” attitudes towards older people, by educating people about the signs and effects

Sometimes, they pressure older people into doing things they don’t really want to do – like giving a loan, selling their house or letting a family member move in with them for free,” he says. “Attitudes like these show a lack

Richmond 'Smartweek' aims for digital up-skill

SMARTWEEK: Nelson-Tasman regional digital coordinator Karen Lee, right, with Richmond Unlimited's Brent Cheyne and Tasman district libraries manager Glennis Coote, are looking forward to hosting Smartweek. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Simon Bloomberg If you are one of those digitally-challenged dinosaurs who still looks up at the sky when someone mentions the Cloud, you should think about attending some of the free Smartweek workshops starting at the Richmond Library later his month. Smartweek has been organised as part of a new digital action plan to help anyone in Nelson and Tasman come up to speed with digital technology. It is supported by the Tasman district and Nelson city councils, as well as the Nelson Regional Development Agency and Nelson-Tasman Chamber of Commerce and runs from June 27 to July 3. "SmartWeek is planned as an easy-to-understand programme of workshops to give people ideas, answer questions and show them where to go next," Nelson-Tasman regional digital coordinator Karen Lee says. "If it’s successful in Richmond then we’ll roll it out in other towns and areas - it’s all about local people helping local people." The Richmond SmartWeek is sponsored by Richmond Unlimited and the Richmond Library, and chair of Richmond Unlimited Brent Cheyne says the workshops are "very relevant" for Richmond businesses. "We’re keen to see as many people get involved as possible," Brent says. "The internet is now part of how we will all do business, it’s up to all of us to get the best we can out of it." Smartweek will be launched with a breakfast at the Wooden Spoon from 7am to 8.30am on June 27, followed by the first workshop in the Richmond Library from 10am to 12pm. Workshops will cover a range of topics, including an introduction to Windows 10 for seniors, digital photography, cloud accounting and Instagram. The full SmartWeek programme can be found on the website wearedigital.nz/smartweek

Talley Group pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of its employees while at work, when sentenced in Nelson District Court. The court was told that a 50mm safety rope connected to a fishing net had previously snapped three weeks before Mr Muir died but it hadn’t been replaced, despite a replacement rope being available on-board. Instead, a knot had been tied in the rope and it continued to be used. The rope then broke again, when Mr Muir was working inside the “snapback zone”, an area of high-risk in the event of a rope breaking.

Funeral insurance “plays on people’s fears” and often sees people paying more than they should for funeral expenses, says Consumer NZ. Consumer NZ are taking a hard line following their latest report that shows people with funeral insurance are paying a lot more than they should. Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin says funeral insurance has been heavily promoted but the lifetime costs of this product are seldom disclosed. “Funeral insurance marketing plays on people’s fears about being a burden on their families. But it’s easy to end up paying thousands more in premiums than the insurance policy will pay out,” says Sue. “If you can’t afford to keep up payments and want to cancel, there’s no refund and your money will be gone.” Consumer NZ reviewed 10 policies offering $10,000 funeral cover for a 64-year-old. The review found that by age 84 the amount paid in premiums exceeded the $10,000 cover with most policies. “You could pay anything from 10 to 100 percent more in premiums than the policy was worth,” says Sue. Consumer NZ wants insurers to fully disclose the lifetime costs of funeral insurance. “Marketing of these policies risks misleading consumers about the cover they’re getting. A week of destruction: From left; a car left burnt on Quebec Rd last Friday; a car burnt out on Fireball Rd last Thursday; security footage of men ram-raiding Big Barrel’s roller doors on Gloucester St; Big Barrel owner Ranbir Singh was far from impressed with the damage done to his store. Car thieving arsonists cause havoc A week of destruction from stolen cars being set alight shows no signs of abating, as police urge locals to lock their cars. Fire fighters have spent five of the last seven mornings putting out cars that had been stolen, taken for a joy ride and then set alight. The first was last Monday, when a car stolen from Christchurch was found burning on Sovereign St, near Guppy Park. The latest was exactly a week later when a car was found burnt out in Appleby. On Tuesday and Wednesday three cars were found abandoned; on Central Rd, deep in the Maitai Valley, in a forestry block on Fireball Rd up the Tantragee. Nelson Fire Service officer Craig

Davies two cars smashed through some “quite substantial” forestry gates before being ditched and set alight. The owner of the car left on Fireball Rd, which still had children’s car seats strapped into the back seat, arrived at the scene as they worked to put his car out. “He had seen it on Facebook and came up, he was pretty pissed off,” says Craig. Law breaking was taken to another level on Thursday morning when a group of four males added a ram-raid to their list of felonies.

The stolen red Mazda was used as a battering ram at Big Barrel Liquor Store in Gloucester St, around 4am. The four males managed to push the door open enough to steal several boxes of beer before setting the car alight on Quebec Rd in Washington Valley, sometime after 6am. Craig says they attended the latest fire just before 7am. “This isn’t a good situation, people’s cars are getting stolen and torched, and looking at the skid marks around the place they are pretty lethal people.” Big Barrel owner Ranbir Singh says he feels sorry for the young men who broke into his store. “They are ruining their lives, after

have this over their head the rest of their lives.” Ranbir says he doesn’t think the group will slow down anytime soon. “They did it to my shop but they won’t stop until you catch them. If they start thinking nobody can catch them they won’t stop, and who knows what will happen? “What if somebody gets killed or seriously injured, hopefully the police move fast so it doesn’t happen again with even bigger consequences.”

Nelson response sergeant Kyle Bruning says the biggest inconvenience is to the owners of the cars who have to deal with claims and are left for a significant period without a vehicle. “While we’re having to investigate these each night, it’s worse for the poor victims waking up in the morning and wanting to jump in their car and drive to work, only to find that it’s not there and that it’s been burnt out somewhere.” He says the investigation into the thefts is ongoing. “It’s an active investigation, we’re after help from the public to be vigilant and help us catch these people.” No arrests have been made, if anyone has information they should contact police on 546 3840.

Family that lost home to fire is being supported by school Brittany Spencer A Chisnall family that was left homeless after a fire destroyed their house last weekend, is being supported by the school its children go to. Richmond Primary School says it has collected food and clothing for the family and has had “heaps of offers” of furniture and other household goods from other families at the school. The family, who are now staying at a local motel, is looking for a house to rent after the fire last Saturday morning completely gutted the back half of their house. The other

half suffered severe smoke damage. Fire investigator Craig Piner says the fire was caused by “some sort of electrical fault” in the lounge or kitchen “The family were able to go through and get a few of their things once we had put it out,” he says. Richmond Primary School principal Tim Brenton says the school community “has got right in behind them”. “We have a wonderful community here and I know people are super keen to get behind them and help. We’re holding off on a few things until we know exactly where they’re going to be.”

Poison drop: As a Brook Valley resident, I am not looking forward to the aerial drop of 26.5 tonne of Brodifacoum by the Brook Sanctuary Trust. It’s been an eye-opener into the industry of poisons. Richard Prosser, NZ First MP, gave a talk called “Beyond 1080” yesterday. It was disheartening to hear that New Zealand has met the international standards of being TB-free for the last ten years. During seven of these ten years, baits containing 5.44 tonne of pure 1080 has been dropped over 2.221 million hectares surrounding livestock. This report does not include areas of ground control, other poisons or the other three years. (Annual Report on the Aerial Use of 1080’ (2014), Environmental Protection Authority). It makes me question how safe our meat is and other farm produce? As a nation relying on export, this makes no sense. Nor is the acceptance of inhumane suffering of any animal. Helen Black.

Brass band's big upset win Nelson City Brass Band is the best in the region after a big upset win the Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast regional contest over Queen’s Birthday weekend. Eight bands competed over three days, including bands from as far away as Canterbury. The win was a dramatic upset with Nelson City Brass, a C grade band,

beating all rivals, including Marlborough District Brass, an A Grade band. Adjudicator Kevin Dell remarked that he was impressed by the technical ability of the band, the quality of the sound they produced and musicianship displayed. Nelson City Brass now set their sights on the National Brass Band contest in Napier in July.

For some great art at good prices, Art Group Nelson recommends their winter exhibition this weekend. Around 40 artists will be showcasing their talents, including painting, mosaic and textured art, with the opening night this Friday, from 7pm, at the Stoke Memorial Hall. Art Group Nelson member

Helena Fox says the first hour of the Friday night opening event is the busiest it is all weekend and is the best time to go, “or you may miss out of getting something really special” Helena joined Art Group Nelson around five years ago and says she enjoys the open and friendly group and the fact that artists of any ability are welcome to join and exhibit

their work. They have also recently started a Facebook page, Art Group Nelson Inc, to keep people up to date with local art news and events, as well as offering people the chance to contact the group’s artists. After the opening night on Friday, Art Group Nelson’s winter exhibition will be open to the public on both Saturday and Sunday, from 10am to 4pm.

Nearly three dozen people across the country have been charged under the new Harmful Digital Communications Act within the first year of the law passing, including two in Nelson. Since July last year, a cruel catalogue of sinister cyber harassment has come before the courts from Invercargill to Auckland, as police take action against the very worst bullies targeting victims online. Justice Minister Amy Adams is hailing the act a success with 35 people prosecuted to date. The range of actions that has been caught by the new legislation is seemingly wide. While some have been collared for publicly posting explicit photos of ex-partners on social-media sites, others have been pinged over allegedly harmful private emails or text messages. Ms Adams says she was surprised at the large number of prosecutions, indicating the act was long overdue. “I’m very proud of the legislation we have. “In the time the law has been passed the real necessity for

In Nelson, there have been two Digital Communications Act cases before the courts in its first year. this legislation has become even clearer and the people who said we didn’t need this law early on seem to have gone strangely silent.” “I’ve actually been a little surprised at the number of prosecutions there have already been under the act, but the fact we’ve already had three people sent to prison because their offending has been that bad makes me realise this is a serious issue.” One of the first cases of its kind to come before the court was that of 28-year-old Aaron Stephen Tamihana. He was jailed for 11 months after sending a video, of his expartner involved in lewd acts, to her mother in a message entitled “what your daughter’s really up to”. Judge David Ruth at Nelson

District Court recognised the reason for the new legislation. “We live in a world where it is very easy and certainly in a very cowardly way and impersonal third-person way to communicate with others without fronting up yourself,” he said. “In my view, to not imprison you would send totally the wrong message to you and others who might embark on this sort of behaviour.” As well as jail terms, sentences handed down had so far included four of communitybased punishment and one of reparation. A second Nelson case is currently before the courts. Ms Adams says, while it was not unique to New Zealand, it appeared cyberbullying was ramping up.

Aquatic centre’s wave pool reopens Surf ’s up again at the Richmond Aquatic Centre after the popular wave pool was reopened this week. The 470 cubic metre wave pool had been closed for almost two months after a leak was found in the end wall. Contractors have been working almost around the clock to repair the

leak and complete scheduled maintenance work while the pool was empty. Centre manager Vaughan Hope says the pool was refilled over the weekend and re-opened on Monday after final testing was completed. Vaughan says the wave pool is one of the centre’s big attractions and “the kids

went crazy when it reopened”. “All the contractors did a good job - they worked really hard,” Vaughan says. “It took 17 hours to refill and few days to get up to the right temperature and now it’s ready to go.” Vaughan says the Wave Rave will return to the wave pool this Friday.

Kelvin and Helen Banks’ entry into the Nelson Rose Society may have been "accidental", but 45 years later the long-serving husband and wife duo have been rewarded with the society’s highest honour – the Frank Penn Memorial Award. Helen joined the society back in 1971 – all because she took part in a radio show quiz. “The society were holding an autumn show in the Bowater Cars Showroom and, as part of the lead up, the radio programme were running quizzes with a prize of a rose bush,” says Helen. “I won three of the bushes and I received a letter asking me to join the society.” With two little boys, and not knowing many people in town, Kelvin encouraged her to join. “I was very shy in those days and Kelvin said ‘you better go meet some people’, so I did.” Kelvin became a member 14 years later, and together they have been “mainstays” for the society and there isn’t a role they haven’t played. They have both been office bearers, judges, and show convenors for five national titles. Helen still holds the position of secretary, while Kelvin has held the title of president, and is now the treasurer and consulting rosarian. Kelvin also helps with organ-

ising and setting up shows, while Helen always puts her hand up to organise the meals, raffles, sales tables, and accommodates guests. The Stoke couple were presented with the award at a meeting last month and say they knew nothing about it, with the other society members playing “secret squirrel”. “We were just sitting at the meeting, and next minute we heard out names called out,” says Helen. “We were in complete and utter shock.” Kelvin is also heavily involved in the Nelson and Brightwater Horticultural Societies, and the Nelson A & P Association. Helen says it is a hobby that has given them a lot pleasure. “We’ve met so many nice people. Each rose gathering is now like a family reunion.” The Frank Penn Memorial Award has been running since 1967, and is presented to a member, or members, of a district rose society who have given outstanding service at a local level, towards promoting roses and rose growing. Kelvin and Helen are the second Nelson couple to win the award, following Norm and Letty Thawley from Moutere Hills, who won it in 2014.

Fortunately for Richmond, it has two of the best and most experienced craftsmen at RoCS. Michael Gregory is in his 50th year at the bench making him one of the most experienced craftsmen in the Nelson region, while owner Brett Grimwood has a number of qualifications to his name along with 15 years experience. Trade qualified jeweller Sarah Neale has also recently joined the RoCs team, bringing with her eight years in the industry. Between them the RoCs team crafts a number of unique pieces from their Richmond workshop. That’s right, your precious rocks and gold will not leave town until they are transformed into a work of art and resting on your finger. Making high quality, fashionable pieces of jewellery is just one part of the business, RoCS is also a valuation company - Diamond & Gem Jewellery Valuations Ltd, with Brett being the only trade registered valuer in the top of the South Island and member of the JVS, Jewellery Valuers Society of New Zealand. Brett is a certified gemologist, a qualifi-

cation recognised not just in New Zealand but in Australia and Great Britain too and is one of only three people in New Zealand with a Diploma in Diamond Technology. IHC Ball

Club Waimea continues to be a great place to host a celebration and most recently, IHC took advantage of the main hall to host a country and western themed ball. It was a great night for everyone attending.

From the presidents desk I am elated, honoured and excited to have been given this opportunity to lead our Club forward. My wife Glenys and I will be better known to many as the owners of Impressions Picture Framers and Art Supplies, serving the local community for more than 30 years; and more recently Glenys for her voluntary role with Neighbourhood Support Waimea chairing the committee which administers 135 street groups. I have been a member of Club Waimea for more than twenty years, active in various sporting sections, especially Indoor Bowls; have held many administrative roles at both Section and Executive levels, and have been a Director of the Club for the last three years. My election platform was to pledge a transition from a period of consolidation to one of revitalisation for our Club. I am sure many members will feel for outgoing President

Dave Birdling, who after many years of service as a Director only assumed the Presidency in a by-election in October and we thank him for his service. The amazing closeness of the vote (just two votes difference) suggests that while byand-large members were happy with the performance of the Club, some like me felt we could do a little more and I thank them for their support. This is one of those watershed moments which has resulted in a whole new administration for the Club. There is a still-evolving reconfiguration of our management team we have a new President and Vice-President (welcome Roy Tomlinson), we have three new members on our Executive Committee, three new Directors (including former President John Allan), a new

Patron (former President Colin Bowden). Thus we have a blend of new blood and experience which will provide many interesting debates over the governance tables, stabilised always by the calm reason of Treasurer Patrick Adamson who continues his many years of service to the Club. These are exciting times. I have a vision of Club Waimea becoming a really family friendly, hospitality focus for the community; a place that individuals and families want to be part of and socialise in. If we can achieve this we will have a very successful Club indeed. Consolidation to revitalisation - the journey begins. I look forward to seeing you at the Club - soon! Lewis Della Bosca

Wakefield make Richmond wonder Jacob Page Sports Editor

sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Wakefield have provided the ultimate wakeup call for Nelson Bays division one leaders, Richmond Athletic, after the cellardwellers earned a 1-1 draw at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Ian Radcliffe’s penalty inside the first five minutes allowed Wakefield to get their tails up. It was momentum they carried right through the 90 minutes, even when Nat Payn was able to lop a speculative shot over the keeper and just under the bar midway through the second half to level the scores. Despite having the bulk of the possession against a tiring Wakefield defence that was losing its shape, Fresh Choice Richmond could not find a winner and as a result had their league lead cut once again. Richmond co-coach Matt Campbell says he needs to work out how the team can work through this

roller-coaster ride of results, having lost to FC Nelson the previous week, then looking great in the Chatham Cup before drawing on Saturday. “We had such a good start to the season that maybe the guys are just starting to come back down.” Matt says, having a Chatham Cup third round game on June 25 may be splitting the players’ focus, but they have to show more energy out in the park. The biggest benefactors were Suburbs Seals who beat FC Nelson 3-1. Goals to Hadleigh Coffey and Davi Marciel kept them in front, but it was a top corner screamer from player/coach Brendan Hodgson that sealed the deal. The result means the Seals are equal on points with Richmond, but Richmond have a game in hand. The Marlborough Mariners kept themselves in the hunt with a 3-1 win over Nelson College. Nelson Suburbs and Tahuna drew 1-1.

Wakefield rider misses out on Rio Jessie Johnston The road to Rio has come to an end for local paralympian hopeful, Frances Dick. The qualification criteria for both Olympic and Paralympic equestrian teams initially required riders to gain four 70 percentages in each of their tests, paralympic qualifying scores then changed to two 70 percentages and two 72 percentages. Frances and her horse Weltmeister AF, (aka Weltie), successfully achieved the new qualifying scores, competing in three major events including the Boneo Classic in Australia, Bates New Zealand Dressage Championship in Fielding and Horse of the Year in Hastings. Even after qualifying, Frances and Weltie’s chances of making it to Rio were in the hands of a national selection panel within the New Zealand Paralympic Committee and Equestrian Sports New Zealand, the national governing body. It was decided that no paralympic rider would be selected, which “is a real shame,” says Frances. “I had

Wakefield’s Frances Dick has missed out on qualifying for the Rio Paralympics. a strong horse and a strong team but that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. It’s been a bit of a journey that’s for sure but I’m super proud of [Weltie].” Competing was just half of Frances’ road to Rio, travel, nutrition, psychology and training plans have required the help of a number of supporters which Frances wishes to thank. They include her mother

and manager, Yvette Dick, instructor, Rachel Thomas and groom Jessica Ladley, along with Prydes EasiFeed, Nelson Dressage Group, The Vet Centre Richmond and Andrew Conway, Wakefield Quarry, PGG Wrightsons Richmond and the Sports Nelson Tasman Trust. As for her future in equestrian sport, Frances says she is still in the process of reevaluating her goals, as well

as competing in the current winter series. In two years time Montreal will hold the World Equestrian Games, then, of course, there’s the next Paralympics. “So I guess in the back of my mind that will be there, but at present I feel like I’d like to continue to train up the grades in the able-bodied competitions and learn new skills and progress that way,” she says.

Bennett hopes for start in Tour Simon Bloomberg Richmond cyclist George Bennett is hoping an emphasis on the “sprint train” won’t jeopardise his chances of riding in his first Tour de France starting next month. George has been included in his Team Lotto NL-Jumbo’s 14-rider long list for next month’s tour after a series of solid performances this season. The 26-year-old recorded his best professional result when he finished seventh in the Tour of California last month and backed that up with an impressive 14th in the prestigious Criterium du Dauphine in France which ended on Monday. Lotto NL-Jumbo’s sports director Merijn Zeeman rated George’s result highly saying on the team’s website that “George Bennett improved a lot this week. He delivered a strong performance and we’re glad about that.” “This 14th place is a big step in the right direction for him and more than we expected as well.” George says the Criterium du Dauphine was “the hardest weeks on the pedals I can remember” with a “miserable start” in the prologue following by brutal days in the mountains. Now he was looking forward to a few days off “to let the mind, body, and mostly the soul recover after eight days of chewing my stem off ”. Although George told the Waimea

George Bennett, centre, is hoping for a start in the Tour de France. Weekly that he was delighted with his form in the Criterium du Dauphine, he was still not assured of a place in the team for the Tour de France. George says the make-up of the team will depend not just on form, but also Lotto NL-Jumbo’s goals for the

tour. “I had a good week here in Dauphine, finishing 14th, but it’s going to be hard to make the cut because it’s possible team may focus on the sprint train this year and not the general classification,” he says.

Lotto NL-Jumbo has one of the best sprinters on the pro-tour in Dylan Groenewegen who this week edged out Andre Greipel to win the 100th edition of Rund um Köln in Germany on Monday. George has already ridden in the

two other grand tours, the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana, and says it would be a dream come true if he makes the cut for the Tour de France. The Lotto NLJumbo team for the Tour de France will be named later this month.

Winter road racing series starts The Ray White Richmond Winter Series started last Saturday when a record 76 riders raced around the Hope circuit near Richmond. Mikey McCallum won the 41km A grade race in 1hr 9min 47sec, just edging out Ethan Batt in a sprint finish with super-veteran Chris Nicholson 33 seconds back in third. Under-17 rider Keegan Hornblow won the B grade race in 1hr 9min 36sec with Josh Ryan in second and Georgia Catterick the first female rider in third. Another promising young female rider Shaane Fulton prevailed in C grade, heading off Kaio Lart and Owen Hoggard in a sprint. Peter Lawless won D grade. The next race in the 11-race Ray White Richmond Winter series starts at the Brightwater Saleyards and heads to Wakefield, Wai-iti and Eighty-eight Valley. Registration for Saturday’s race is from 12.45pm with a 1.30pm start.

100th time a charm for Ideal Arden Jacob Page Ideal Arden created his own slice of history in winning the Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Winter Cup at Richmond Park on Sunday. The six year-old’s 100th start saw him earn the biggest win of what has been a gritty career, and also allowed him to break through the $100,000 career earnings barrier. Ideal Arden won on both days of the two-day Nelson meeting at his first look at the track. Highview Freddy, Joey Macguire and race favourite Fifth Edition all got close on the line, but Ideal Arden was not to be denied. The win gave driver Gavin Smith a first in his long career, with Sunday being the first time the reinsman had driven four winners in one day. He said post-race, with conditions deteriorating he wanted to be near

the front. “Conditions meant we had to go forward and see how the race panned out from there, but (Ideal Arden) fought on well.” One of the more popular winners of the day was Compliant. Two of its owners are Richmond's Gus Cuthbertson and Russell Aitkenhead. He also led most of the way and held off all challengers down to the winning post. Despite the wet weather, club president John McKenzie says they had a good meeting with off-course betting up 27 per cent on Friday and 40 per cent on Sunday. Oncourse betting was only down two per cent on Friday and five per cent on Sunday. The Nelson Harness Racing Club’s punters club was also a success on the day, giving each of its members $37 back for the initial $10 investment.

Marist defence too strong for garin Jacob Page Marist Black held Garin A to just seven goals in each half to prevail 29-14 in their senior 1 netball game at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. The opening quarter saw both teams looking rusty. The only consistent element of the first 10 minutes was turnovers. Both teams struggled to bring the ball through the court with Marist earning a 6-4 lead in a forgettable opening for both teams. Marist extended their advantage with the first two goals of the second quarter and their defence continued to create turnovers and held-ball situations. The problem was, Marist turned over a lot of ball in the attacking third which prevented them from extending their lead quicker. Marist goal shoot Celeste Dempster proved accurate enough to keep her team in front, but both Garin and Marist were guilty of rushing passes. Despite it all, Garin remained in touch. Garin goal defence Georgia Clarkson had a strong second quarter but late shots from Dempster ensured Marist led

Marist wing defence Kate McCaskin won some crucial ball for her team in the third quarter as goals continued to be at a premium for Garin, who had to rely on

their extra height in the shooting circle to gain offensive rebounds. The Marist shooters found their rhythm in the third quarter and extended the margin to 20-8 at one point.

Garin hit double figures late to cut the margin to 10 heading into the final quarter. Marist tried to play up tempo in the final quarter and with victory assured they edged to the final whistle.

Waimea Old Boys RFC comes with a home game. Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys haven’t had a plain sailing season so far. With the team unfortunately hampered by injuries, and the loss of players to higher honours including Jeff Lepa, who will be playing for Samoa the same weekend, their lead up to the Nelson Bays club championship has seen many ups and downs. The Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys B team will also be taking on Nelson at 1:15pm. Positioned around third or fourth on the table, the team will of course be doing their best to make the Waimea Old Boys Club proud. Unlike last year, the senior women’s team will be joining in the club day with a match against Marist, kicking off at 2pm. The Under-18 team will also be taking to the pitch against Marlborough Boys Second XV at 11:30am, along with the U-14 team, now under the management of former JAB president, Jeremy Salton. This is the first year that Waimea Old Boys

Jubilee Park will be at full capacity this weekend as Waimea Old Boys gets set to hold its annual club day which will see every team, including the senior A and B teams, play on their home turf and both coaches and players can’t wait. Being the biggest club in Nelson, club day on Saturday, June 18, is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to come down and celebrate being part of Waimea Old Boys, from those just entering into the sport in the Under 6 grade, to those in the A and B teams who are now impressing coaches outside of Nelson. Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys will be taking on Nelson’s A team as part of the Nelson Bays club championship, with the match kicking off at 3pm. Waimea go into the game sitting around fifth on the championship table and with every game as important as the last when it comes to making it into the semi-finals. Their aim is to give it everything they’ve got, drawing on the advantage that

Waimea look to move on from heavy defeat Jacob Page Waimea Old Boys coach Mark Milne did not need many words to sum up his team’s loss to Marist – the 48-0 score line said it all. “I don’t think I need to talk for too long about that game,” Mark says. “I’m not going to make excuses but the reality is we were struggling for numbers.” It was a fair statement from the coach who had numerous players playing out of position and several frontline players, including Buller-bound halfback James Lash and a concussed No 10 Dylan Fletcher unavailable – both will not return this season. “We had to call up a few guys from our rugby programme and they aren’t physically ready for senior rugby and I don’t expect them to be this season,” Mark says. “Every club goes through peaks and troughs, it’s a case of moving forward and not dwelling on what happened for too long.” Despite the heavy defeat

Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys are still in payoff contention. “We’ve had players playing out of position at most times during the season and we have still been competitive.” Flanker Troy Mangan played a usually tenacious game, especially at the breakdown but the pressure Marist exerted in most areas of the game proved too much for the home team to cope with. Mark says his players knew they were up against it and “outgunned in a few areas” but he was happy with how willing his men were to play out of position when called upon. “We were short of players and experience but I’m really pleased we have a group of guys who are so willing to put their hands up and play where they are needed.” The road does not get any easier for Waimea Old Boys as they get set to host Tasman Trophy winners Nelson at Jubilee Park during their annual club day this Saturday.

Bays’ division two rugby with a 27-17 win over Marist at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Coach Wayne Bateman described it as a “scrappy” performance but in reality the four try bonus point victory kept them in contention for a home playoff game.

SG

“I said to the guys at training that this is the time of the season you want to keep building week on week.” Waimea Old Boys never looked like losing the game but equally, Marist never stopped trying. Centre Michael Bates carried the

ball strongly while first five Jason Ichon and winger Hetadaka Heitia also dotted down. “The defence is what impressed me most about the performance, Wayne says. “That’s the area of the game that will have to be strong come the playoffs.

“Marist had very big forwards but I was happy with how the set piece went, our scrums and line outs were strong. Waimea Old Boys will welcome Nelson to Jubilee Park on Saturday with the game beginning at 1.15pm.
