Auckland investors buying here
Simon Bloomberg
Auckland buyers and low interest rates are combining to heat up Nelson’s usually cool winter housing market leaving real estate agents searching to find enough listings to meet demand. The latest Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) figures show that sales volumes in Nelson in June were 21 per cent higher than last year and already Mike Pero Real Estate’s Craig Hamilton says he expects “July’s numbers to be huge” as well. And that’s left real estate agents battling to find enough listings as buyers continue to invest in the Nelson market. “As soon as the interest rates dropped, the buyers started coming to the open homes. We are also getting a lot of interest from outof-town buyers - I’ve sold a couple of properties to Auckland buyers in the last

few weeks,” Craig says. Demand for houses listed from $250,000 to $400,000 is particularly high with Craig saying “you know that they will get multiple offers”. Ray White Richmond’s principal Brent Sturm says they are also getting a lot of demand with some Australian and Chinese investors “buying properties sight-unseen”. “That’s the first time we are seeing a lot of that. Buyers from Auckland, Australia and China are looking at the houses on-line and buying them.” Brent says Ray White has

Richmond Mall brings in parking wardens Andrew Board Richmond Mall will introduce parking wardens next month in an effort to stop people leaving their cars there all day. Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says a recent investigation found up to 40 per cent of the vehicles in the mall car park each day were there for the entire work day. She says those “abusing” the free parks were either retail workers in the mall, retail workers on Richmond’s Queen St or people parking

their cars at the mall and catching the bus or carpooling to work in Nelson city. She says the high number of people parking there all day has forced the mall to introduce parking wardens, which will fine people $65 for going over the two hour time limit. The company employed is national car parking firm Wilsons Parking. Belinda says there will be flexibility for shoppers who need to use a park for longer, with an online system able to give them extra time. “We understand that there are times
when more than two hours is needed, for example when a customer is booked in for a colour or tint at the hairdressers. In this case we will have a process in place for these customers to ensure they are excused from being ticketed.” The enforcement programme will be introduced in two stages, the first on August 4 will simply mean a warning ticket for people parking over the two hour limit. From August 11 the full enforcement will begin. She says

interest from Chinese buyers since listing houses on China’s largest international property website, juwai.com. Although the shortage of listings was typical of winter, he says it is far more marked this year because of the increased demand for houses. Summit Real Estate Richmond branch manager Gordon Webb says Auckland buyers “looking for a change in lifestyle” and low interest rates were the main reasons for the increase in demand.
“They can sell in Auckland then come down here and have a lifestyle rather than working to service their mortgage,” he says. Although Gordon says listings for houses up to $500,000 were in greatest demand, that demand flowed up through the rest of the market as sellers looked to “move up the ladder”. “A lack of listings” was highlighted in the REINZ’s latest report which states that “demand for new subdivisions in Richmond remains strong with first home buyers starting to compete with
out-of-town buyers.” The report states that there has been also been a significant drop in listings in Northland and Bay of Plenty over the last six months “with Aucklanders increasingly buying in these regions”. The median price of the 25 houses sold in Richmond in June this year was $509,500, up 17 per cent from $435,000 last June. In Nelson city, the median price of the 91 houses sold was $360,000, down four percent from $375,000 last June when 75 houses were sold.

If we moved into the new building we’d have to open and we’d lose money,” she says. Adele says she is also disappointed at the handling of the process which she says “was not transparent”. She also says she can’t understand why Golden Bear Brewing is staying in the building when she is being forced out. “The council said they would look after us but I didn’t realise, perhaps a bit naively, that moving would be at my expense. I’m annoyed and gutted that it has come to this.” Council commercial manager
Gene Cooper says they had to relocate Hamish’s because of “legacy issues” with the lease that council “could not unwind”. He says the council “was not part of the problem” and has tried “wherever possible” to help Adele keep Hamish’s open. He says council purchased the building to get parties back together, but all they could achieve was to let Adele stay another five years or move when another building became available on Mapua Wharf. Gene says council “went beyond the call of a commercial landlord to provide Hamish’s with a financial solution” that included reduced rent to help them into the new building. Hamish’s employs four parttime staff as well as Adele’s children, Emily, Lauryn and Jason, and five students during the school holidays.

One of Mapua’s and Nelson’s favourite cafes, Hamish’s Icecream Parlour and Cafe, is closing after its lease was terminated, with owner Adele Calteaux saying they can’t afford to move into new premises. Hamish’s, which is named after Mapua’s famous resident heron which visited the wharf each winter for more than 20 years, will be closing on July 24. Adele says she did not want to close after running the popular cafe for nine years, but insists she has no alternative. Adele says the Tasman District Council purchased the building on the Mapua Wharf in December 2013 and now it is going to be leased entirely to another existing tenant, Golden Bear Brewing Company. Although council offered to relocate Hamish’s to the new commercial premises being constructed on the former Mapua Aquarium site, Adele says they can’t afford to move into the new building. “We were going to move into the new building, but when we looked at the conditions of the lease we realised we couldn’t afford it. It was going cost us $60,000 to $80,000 to refit the new building - we are only a small business, we can’t afford that.” Adele says the new lease also required the tenant to open at least six days a week in winter

Richmond Mall brings in parking wardens FROM PAGE 1 feedback from mall retailers has been mixed, but the major businesses are on board. “Some retailers say it will inconvenience their staff but the majors are on board 100 per cent. It’s all about turning over customers and making it easier for them to find a park.” There are 770 car parks in the mall and 1300 public parks in the Richmond CBD and Belinda says the new enforcement could cause problems for the town’s residential parks or public carparks and encourages the council to consider those impacts. “They are doing a study at the moment into car parking but I don’t think they’re aware of how big an issue it is.”

Bella tops dog names for Tasman Simon Bloomberg
What happened to Fido, Spot and Rover? It looks like those traditional names have lost their popularity with this year’s dog registration showing that Bella, Ruby, Jess, Jack, Max and Sam are the top names for the Tasman district’s 10,300 dogs. Bella, Max, Ruby and Jess are also in the top 10 names for man’s best friend in Nelson city where 5455 dogs have so far been registered. But Tasman District Council dog control administration officer Ross Connachie says not all owners give their dogs conventional names. A glance down the list of this year’s registrations suggests some owners have gone barking mad, giving their dogs names like Stinky the Stoat, Jesus, Cadbury, Pandemonium and Richie McPaw. But Ross says many of those seemingly strange names do have a perfectly logical explanation. For example, Jesus is a blue heeler, Cadbury and Hershey are chocolate labs while Fuhrer and Kaiser are German shepherds. Wakefield’s Courtenay Brennan explains that there’s also a good explanation for naming her one-year-old bijon shitzu, Pandemonium. “We called him Panda because
Wakefield’s Courtenay Brennan with her dog Pandemonium. Photo: Jessie Johnston. he’s black and white and looks just like a Panda Bear but then we extended his name to Pandemonium,” Courtenay says. “When people ask why we call him Panda we just say call him and you’ll see why.” However, Courtenay says Panda is “very bouncy’ and does actually cause pandemonium. “He is a bit of a trouble-maker but he gets away with it because he’s so cute,” she says. And while most Tasman dog owners have stayed with the convention of giving their dog just one name, there are an increasing number of dogs with a
first and surname being registered like Richie McPaw. A kelpie called Steven Fox is another with a double-banger name with owner Penny Richards explaining that he was initially just named Steven and that the Fox came later. “He’s an Australian dog so we named him Steve after Steve Irwin from the Crocodile Hunter. But he’s got a really bushy tail and pointy nose and he’s coloured red so my father always calls him Steven Fox and that kind of stuck,” Penny says. Some of the more interesting dog names in Nelson City in-
clude Moo Moo, Nut, Muttley and Stump. Food names also appear to be a popular in Nelson, with Mango, Toast, Muffin, Sushi, Peanut and Honey all making appearances. Some have chosen to name their dogs after cars, such as Mazda, Porche and Chevy, while flower names are also proving to be popular, with Poppy, Jasmine, Daisy, Marigold, Violet, and Rose all making the list. Although Ross says a dog’s name is, perhaps, the single most important word that they will ever learn, it won’t help them if they are lost or stolen. “We rely on registration information and microchips to reunite approximately 800 missing dogs with their owners each year,” he says. “It’s important that the council has an accurate record of both owner and dog details. “The ability to reunite owners with their dogs is one of the benefits and reasons for dog registration, and having an annual registration renewal ensures that both owner and dog details are current.” Dog registration officially closed on June 30 although owners have until August 1 to avoid a late payment penalty of 50 per cent. Last year, 600 owners elected to pay the late fee of $15 for rural dogs and $25 for urban dogs.

Rally star Hayden Paddon races local fans
Ten locals got the chance to race against one of the country’s fastest young sports stars, after winning a competition with Bowater Hyundai. Top rally driver Hayden Paddon took on the local drivers at the ProKarts Tahunanui track, as part of a sponsors trip to Nelson on Tuesday. he’s competed on a smaller scale race track but he loved it. “About 15 years ago I was on go karts, It’s the grassroots of motorsport where a lot of kids start.” Hayden took out the competition followed by Cam Lankshear in second place and Daryl Wehner in third. “There was a bit of argybargy and a bit of pushing but we all enjoyed it and that’s the important thing,” says Hayden. In 2007, Hayden made his debut in the World Rally Championships, competing in the New Zealand Rally as a wildcard entry.
Last year, Hayden saw his first stage win in the Rally Catalunya in Spain. Earlier this year, Hayden took his first ever lead of a WRC event in the Rally d’Italia. He was the first New Zealander to lead a World Rally Championship event since Possum Bourne held the lead in the 1999 Rally New Zealand and the first one to do so outside of his country. He finished second overall in the race. For video on this story, visit

Police called to fist-fight in library Children in the Richmond Public Library ran for cover this morning after a fight broke out between two men, smashing a computer and sending furniture flying. The fight broke out at around 10am on Friday when a man entered the library and started pushing and swearing at another man sitting at one of the computers, according to young witness, Cameron Kennedy, aged eight, who was seated at the next computer. After blows were exchanged, the man who started the altercation said “I’ll be back” and ran off, Cameron says. “Some guy walked in and smashed over the computer and started swearing,” Cameron says. “They started fighting and this girl tried to stop them – I was really scared.” Cameron says the librarian reacted quickly and moved the boys away from the computers. Although there were reports of a knife being pulled, acting senior sergeant Steffan James of the Nelson police says they attended the incident and are satisfied that the knife fell out of one of the men’s pockets during the altercation. Steffan says the two men are known to each other and police, and would be interviewed about the incident. Although it was not a serious assault, Steffan says he is concerned that the fight broke out in a public library during the school holidays when there were lots of young children around. He says the fight was thought to be over “a matter on Facebook” and police will be reviewing the library’s security camera recording of the incident.

After a hard training on a cold winter night, what would be more welcome than a good, old fashioned home cooked meal? Wanderers Rugby Club has a tradition of cooking their division one and two teams a hearty meal every Thursday night after training and last week it was prepared, cooked and served by a handful of the staff from Farmlands. As new sponsors this year, they volunteered to cook two meals, although their sponsorship will also be going into other general needs within the club. “About four years ago I would, just as a special treat, do a meal for them a couple of times a season. It was a pretty basic meal, but I did that for a couple of years, then last year we go into it in a big way and started doing a meal every training night,” says Wanderers club administrator Diane Drogemuller. The meals provided to players after training are only possible thanks to the generosity of those who support the club, including those that come in and make the meals, those
Reporter

who clean up afterward and those who provide the food. Wanderers are particularly grateful to Homestead Farms for donating the meat and Robbie and Sheryl Conning for the vegetables. “I think it’s just great for team building and team morale, and introducing new players. Over the course of the season you have quite a few players come in for one reason or another and it’s a good way to keep that team unity. It’s also really good to have the A and B squads involved, it provides that connection, and it’s just a good thing. And for a lot of them, if they’re flatting it’s a good feed once a week that they don’t have to think about,” says committee member Tim King. Kids go crazy on ‘lego-bots’ There was the Lego equivalent of a demolition derby at the Richmond Library last week, when the Ministry of Inspiration held a Battle of the Bots competition as part of the library’s school holiday programme. About 20 students aged 10 to 14 attended the workshop run by the Ministry of Inspiration, which is a Tasman-based charity that aims to encourage young people to be innovative and creative thinkers. Last Tuesday, the Ministry’s Amy Cornelisen, with a little help from techies, Garin College’s Sam Harrison and Will Hewitt of Nelson
College, provided a range of Lego Mindstorms Robotics kits for the children to build and programme a robot to compete in Battle of the Bots. “They have to programme the robot to respond to the environment,” Amy says. “It has a light sensor and a touch sensor and has to stay inside a boundary line and battle the other Bot - it’s like a demolition derby because if the Bot falls apart or stops it’s out.” The Battle of the Bots is proving popular with the Ministry of Inspirations next workshop at Garin College this Wednesday selling out.
Blessing of the Fleet this weekend The 15th Blessing of Nelson’s Fishing Fleet is scheduled for this Saturday, paying its annual tribute to those who have lost their lives at sea along with the blessing of fishing vessels in the lead up to the hoki season. There will be the usual fireworks on Friday night, with viewing from the
waterfront and the port hills. Flares and fireworks will be set off from 6.30pm. On Saturday, Nelson City Brass will play from noon at the Seafarers’ Memorial, while the fishing boats line up along Wakefield Quay. The blessing ceremony will begin at 12.30pm.

New name for aquatic centre Simon Bloomberg
Richmond’s Aquatic and Fitness Centre will soon have a new name after the ASB Bank decided not to renew its naming-right sponsorship for the Tasman District Council-owned Salisbury Rd complex. ASB has been the official naming-right sponsor since the pool opened 10 year ago. But now the ASB has been officially dropped and an interim name of Richmond Aquatic and Fitness Centre has been adopted while council finds a new sponsor. “ASB chose not to renew its sponsorship so we are in the process of identifying a new sponsor,” council corporate services manager Mike Drummond says. “We are still working through the process for doing this but we have had some approaches.” Mike declined to say either how much the deal with ASB was worth or the potential value of the new sponsorship deal but confirmed that it did represent “a financial contribution”. The ASB prefix has already been removed from the Aquatic Centre’s website and will progressively be taken off printed material as it is reprinted. However, Mike says the signs on the building would not be changed until a new naming right sponsor was found, so that “everything can be changed at the same time”.

Shark tries to steal fisherman’s catch A group of local fishermen had to really fight for their fish over the weekend as a porbeagle shark tried to steal their catch off the hook. Troy Dando was on board when a very cheeky shark had a crack at one of their fish they had on a line. “It then bit the motor on the boat, then worked its way alongside the boat, biting it as it went,” he says. Porbeagle sharks are similar in appearance to mako sharks and grow to around 2.5m long.

I like that design. Having lived overseas for a number of years, it is clear that our flag is not recognised as NZ. We found that everyone thought it was Australian flag. We need something NZ unique. Diane Chandler.
Pay rises in the retail sector? New jobs in industry? Anyone getting apprenticeships? Why is the foodbank in so much demand? Why do we need Food for Families, the Koha Shed, Salvation Army stores, if we are all doing so well? Graeme O'Brien.
Health needs more???? Wendy Thomas.
Have you had a real estate agent ask if you'd like to sell your house? Several. And always while I'm cooking dinner. And I'm renting, so knocking on my door is a complete waste of time. Nikole Berkett.

What about respect to our elders who lost their dedicated lives for our national flag and country. Money should be put towards feeding our NZ kids. Tots against! Mandy Thomas. Seal seen at Tahuna's back beach: He's frolicking along Rocks Rd at the moment. Michael Ogden. I saw a seal within feet of the sea wall along rocks road, one day this week. I didn't stop for a photo, because other cars trying to do so were a hazard. Jamie Hall.
Yes, in Stoke plus lots of flyers. CheyRose Evans. Smoke in Tahuna: At a time of year when families are going cold, and paying massive power bills because the council said 'no' to new fires to help pollution... how is this scene in Stoke [from the industrial businesses in Tahuna] acceptable? Tina Guy.
Is this the one which normally sunbathes on the sea wall of the cut. Could be he's got some mates. Dennis Gibbs. Why isn't success trickling down? Last November, retail spending was up 8.1 per cent from the previous year, the Economic Development Agency for Nelson says "Nelson is the best preforming economy in NZ at the moment" Who feels these benefits are trickling down to the people of Nelson.

Phil Hazeldine is thrilled with the reception his new restaurant, Phil’s Place has received in the first few weeks of service. Two weekends ago they recorded 100 diners on a single Sunday and Phil says they have had a lot of great feedbackin regards to the great selection and freshness of the food, particularly the soups and casserole/stew meals.

Two weekends ago the Club Waimea card section played for the Ron Butterworth Trophy. Ron had been a member of the club for many years until his death and to celebrate his memory, his family had a memorial trophy made. The winners of the competition were Ralph Davies and Bev Moffet with Anne Goodman and Pattie Crimp coming second. The club also took part in the Clarke Memorial tournament in Blenheim a few weeks ago, playing against both Blenheim and Suburban Club. Club Waimea was successful with Tom Beer and Jean Gasserley winning. Coming up, eight members from the Club Waimea cards section will be travelling back to Blenheim to compete in the Nationals tournament in August. Clubs from around the country will be taking part, totalling around 350-400 competitors.

Nelson lifestyle suits nicely
Pam Campbell in her garden at the Club Waimea Caravan Park.
Sun City Rockers members Clara Jones, Cindy Verry, Deb Corbett and Andrew Aldridge struck success at the South Island Interclub Rock’n’Roll challenge last weekend in Christchurch. Clara and Cindy were competing together and were awarded third in the Best Dressed category and first place in their open same-sex section, while Deb and Andrew got first place in the novice section. While Cindy and Clara unfortunately didn’t qualify for nationals, they are looking forward to trying again next year.

Pam and Neville Campbell really took downsizing seriously when they reached retirement. From a quarter acre section in Southland, they are now proud residents of the Club Waimea caravan park. Retiring five years ago, the couple had already decided that caravan life was the next step. They had travelled round Australia in a caravan during the 80s and found they loved what caravan life had to offer. Having visited the Nelson area previously, Pam and Neville decided that the weather and the town suited them nicely and when they bought their caravan off Trademe, it seemed like everything was just meant to be with the van already set up and ready to go on site. As for their decision to stay and call Club Waimea home, Pam says it was because of the central location and the ability to walk most places.
“It is a community and you always know if you need a hand there’s always somebody that will help, and the social life’s good, not so much over the winter, but over the summer we’ll go and have a few drinks with somebody and a barbeque,” says Pam. “And of course, if you’re like me and growing [produce in the garden] you’ve got more than you’ll ever eat so you deliver it round and everybody gets some, that’s what everybody does and that’s what community spirit is here.” Of course there are always downsides to anything and on a cold, frosty winter morning, the last thing you want to be doing is emptying the toilet when the waters not going. “But you know that and that’s part of the life and that’s what you sign up for,” says Pam. “We both enjoy it, we love it here, this is what we came up here for, the lifestyle, and that’s what we got.”

The team at Stitchcraft are excited to be celebrating a year in business. Tanya Carney took over Richmond’s only fabric and yarn store on April 1 last year and says it’s been a great experience so far and the year has flown by. “I’ve found it really good fun, I’ve met lots of people making all sorts of amazing things, it’s a really creative place to work. Tanya has been involved with clothing design and craft for a long time and is now using her skills and experience to help others fuel their creative passions. Her staff are also experts when it comes to sewing and kitting and are always available to help. Stocking the best products ensures
top quality results for customers, but being long-time enthusiasts means Tanya and her team are your first port of call for assistance with things like pattern translations and selecting the perfect materials for your project. It’s this personal, friendly and educational service that makes Stitchcraft a cut above the rest. In store, keen sewers, knitters and other needle crafters will find a colourful array of the finest yarns, fabrics and haberdashery. Tanya has DMC embroidery threads, a new sight for Richmond and saving locals the trip into Nelson to get it. Waimea College could be well pleased with their efforts at the South Island Secondary Schools Junior Development Tournament held in Christchurch last week. In the Year 10 competition, Waimea 10A continued on with their superb form from the Nelson competition where they have been promoted to the Premier 2 grade. With a six win and two loss record they were defeated 24–34 by Nelson College for Girls in the play off for fifth. Waimea had the perfect record going into their game against Rangiora High School on day two. They had earlier defeated Villa Maria, who went on to be beaten finalists, 28-20. Their performance was so complete that Villa management expected Waimea to go all the way. Waimea were well below-par against Rangiora, although circle defenders Alex Bloomberg and Maddi Springer toiled tirelessly to win ball, it was through court and the offensive end which failed to capitalise. And Rangiora punished them severely to the tune of 18–31. However, to their credit the Waimea girls bounced back to gain the scalp of Christchurch Girls High 26–16 to meet Nelson. Coach Miranda Hart said her girls knew they were beaten by the better team, with the final score 24–34. She said “Nelson had structure, with everyone contributing and they put some great ball into their goal shoot.” Maddi and Jess Kelly were named in the tournament’s talented players squad on the back of some great performances, while Bailee Tava and Harriet Ogilvie returned commendable statistics as shooters. CJ Wilkins could be well pleased at the

progress she made throughout the tournament. Waimea 9A finished 15th after an impressive first day when they recorded a comprehensive 38–13 win over South Otago, which was followed by a 27-all draw against Timaru Girls. They finished the day off with a 31–24 win over Cashmere High. Day two did not have the same success when Waimea lost all three games. Waimea only played the one game on day three on account of the ice on the courts at Hagley. Coach Karryn Stack said overall she was happy with a top sixteen finish. She said “her girls played well as a team, and gave it everything they had”. Jaime Young at wing defence came in for praise from her coach as she played hard throughout and worked tirelessly to keep her opposite off circle edge. Goal shoot Kate Dohman shot 100 per cent in the first game and went on to record impressive stats while goal attacks Christie Gilbert and Annaleise Ramsay were handy on the shot but more often used as a third feeder. Sam Hardy, more accustomed to the centre bib stepped up to command the goal defence one, which she handled with aplomb. Anna Gaging was the big improver in the mid court, where she linked nicely. Garin College’s Caleb Binns was named in the talented umpires squad.

Waimea Old Boys Rugby
Waimea div 2 in club final
Andrew Board
The pain of 2014 hasn’t been erased for the surviving members of this year’s Waimea Old Boys division two side, but this Saturday offers the perfect opportunity to lay those demons to bed. Waimea were beaten in extra time by archrivals Wanderers in last year’s Car Company Nelson Bays division two club rugby competition. The same two teams have once again emerged as the best in the region and will battle it out in this Saturday’s final at Trafalgar Park. Waimea will go into the game as only very
slight favourites after winning the last game between the two sides and remaining undefeated since the first round of the season. Waimea made the final courtesy of a 38-22 win over Takaka in Richmond, while Wanderers demolished Collingwood 22-0 in Brightwater in the second semi-final. Coach Wayne Bateman says his players are pretty fired up about the chance to claim some silverware but admits the teams are evenly matched. “It’s going to be the bounce of the ball. We’re the same really, they have a good pack and good backs and so do we.”
Wayne says they’re approaching the game just like any other throughout the season. “In years gone by we’ve done something different. But this year it’s just business as usual. They know what they’ve got to achieve.” Waimea’s sole loss of the season was way back in round one, but it came against Wanderers. Waimea then beat them 14-3 in the second round of the season and Wayne says the team has been improving each week. “The boys have improved and improved as we’ve gone on and on Saturday they played bloody well. The forwards were really good
and the backs tuned in at the right time.” He says flankers Andrew Martin and Mason Thelin and lock Hamish Ballagh were standouts among a good team performance. The final between Waimea and Wanderers kicks off at Trafalgar Park this Saturday at 1pm. The earlier time is to allow for extra time, after their final last year forced the division one final to kick off later than expected. A bus carrying supporters will leave Waimea’s clubrooms at 12 noon. Waimea Old Boys senior women’s team will play a Country XV at Trafalgar Park this Saturday starting at 11.45am.
Painful end to the season for Waimea
SG
The Waimea Old Boys senior A team’s season came to a dramatic end last Saturday when it suffered a heartbreaking 20-19 loss to Kahurangi in their Car Company Nelson division one semifinal at Jubilee Park. Waimea has been the the dominant force in Nelson Bays rugby for the last few years and looked unbeatable again this season until their 11-game winning streak was broken by Wanderers in the Tasman Trophy final. Waimea suffered another shock loss in the last round robin match against Nelson and then on Saturday, it was Kahurangi’s turn to upset the defending champions with substitute midfielder Kenny Eggers scoring a match-winning try to secure victory and a place in the final. Waimea was on track for the finals when they led 19-13 with a minute to play before Kenny scored and Mike Wells converted to record an unlikely win. Waimea had led 9-8 at halftime after three penalties to Rohan Saifoloi before flanker Sam Winslow scored a second half try and Rohan kicked a fourth penalty.

Wanderers aim to be double champions Taylors Contracting Wanderers players and supporters are gearing up for their biggest day of the year, and hopefully their biggest night of the year, as they prepare for Saturday’s Car Company Nelson division one and two finals at Trafalgar Park. The club’s senior A and B teams will play Kahurangi and Waimea Old Boys respectively after the A’s dispatched Marist 28-13 and the B’s accounted for Collingwood 22-0 in last week’s semifinals. Now the two teams will be making the pilgrimage from Brightwater to Trafalgar Park for the second consecutive year and senior A manager Frazer Lochhead says they can expect plenty of support. “The support the teams have had this year has been unbelievable so we should get a good crowd backing our guys on Saturday,” Frazer says. “The players will be coming back out to our clubrooms later to say thankyou to all those supporters, win or lose, so it will be a big day for the club.” Frazer says it’s a great achievement by the club’s “sponsors, coaches, managers and players” to have two teams in the finals. The senior B team has come through an extremely competitive competition while the senior A’s had overcome a slow start and losing eight frontline players to reach their finals.

Top of the South gymnastics competition tries new venue
Although Wanderers were top qualifiers for the play-offs, Frazer says they are taking nothing for granted. “I’d like to think that we can win but it’s finals rugby and anything can happen. Nobody would have thought that Kahurangi would have beaten Waimea Old Boys to make the final which shows you can’t write anyone off. “All the teams did well to make the semis and they deserve credit for that. I just hope it’s a good day and the game is a good spectacle.” The division two final between Wanderers and Waimea Old Boys starts at 1pm while the division one final kicks-off at 3pm.
