Illegal poachers are riling up locals
Residents of the district have taken to social media, to vent frustration over illegal hunters. Amber Terrill recently spoke out on a Murchison Community page. She says on numerous occasions poachers have trespassed and wounded animals on her family’s property. “It’s so disheartening to go through your land and find piles of guts or whole animals left to rot. The fact that poachers are walking through a paddock, winging shots and scaring stock so that they go crashing through fences, is disgusting.” Amber’s comments were well received by the community with replies echoing and agreeing with her statement. People are concerned it is only a matter of time before someone is accidently hurt or killed. Murchison Police constable Matthew Elliott says, “I encourage and support everyone to enjoy the outdoors in all manners of activities and pastimes in our National and State parks, reserves and rivers. Hunting wild game, whether for sport, pest control or as a means to put food on the table, is one of these outdoor activities and has been an integral part of our NZ history and is still the pursuit of many keen men and women and families in this country. As with all sports and past times, advancements in technology has come very rapidly over the last 10 – 15 years to the shooting and hunting scene and some of the equipment available to

The section of State Highway 60 (SH60) from Three Brothers Corner to Maisey Rd has long been considered as a high-risk route due to its crash rate, roadside hazards and challenging intersections and driveways. There have been calls from the community and police to reduce the speed limit. Now the Tasman District Council is working with the
New Zealand Transport Agency on proposals to lower the speed limit on the Appleby Highway and some adjoining local roads to improve safety. As well as a lower limit on SH60, they’re also proposing reduced speed limits on several connecting local roads. The proposed changes are designed to improve safety for all road users, and will not greatly affect travel times. For
example, it will only take one minute and 11 seconds of additional travel time to drive SH60 from Three Brothers to Maisey Rd at the proposed limit of 80kmh compared with travelling at 100kmh. Consultation on the reduced speed limits is open until Tuesday, August 28. Visit www.tasman.govt.nz/ feedback for more information.

the average hunter and shooter today dramatically enhances the opportunity to detect game animals during the day, and even more so at night. I would ask that if you are using spotlights or some of the advanced Thermal and Night vision scopes and monoculars at night, that you ensure you are hunting on private property and that you have the informed permission of the land owner or occupier before you set out. The safety and the welfare of others and respect for other people’s property is a paramount consideration in responsible firearms handling and use. Hunting and shooting while aided by these devices from a public road or on or over private and/or public land without permission or valid permit at any time of the day, and includes all land administered by the Department of Conservation by night, is unlawful. The offence of Unlawful Hunting under the Wild Animals Control Act 1977 applies to all forms of hunting, whether for example with firearms, bows or exclusively with hunting
dogs, and carries a maximum penalty of 2 years imprisonment and $100,000 fine. Unfortunately for a number of individuals recently in the Tasman District, this has resulted in convictions for unlawful hunting, confiscation of expensive hunting equipment, substantial fines and the revocation of the individual’s firearms licence because they didn’t get permission or just didn’t have the right to be where they were found. If you haven’t got one or more of the following as it applies to the area you plan to hunt, you’re going to be off side and placing yourself and others at risk. A land owner’s informed permission; A valid hunting permit from DOC (incl. a permit for hunting dogs) or from Fish and Game for public land; A firearms licence for use and possession of a firearm (or be under the immediate supervision of someone who has). And all conditions imposed by each of the authorities above are abided by. Remember, firearm use is only permitted at night on private land with the informed permission of the land owner or occupier. Keep it safe and stay on side. Happy hunting!”
Amy Russ Local residents are up in arms about those few dog owners that ruin it for the rest by not picking up after their beloved pooches ‘fouls’. Neglected dog droppings have long been a problem in the region and people have had enough, taking to social media to vent their frustrations. With comments such as, “so gross, it’s everywhere!” and “I don’t understand why people leave their dog shit in the street, council grass reserves and kerbs, especially where kids run, ride their bikes or scooters.” Sports fields, family picnic areas, walking tracks and footpaths, no ground
seems to be immune. Some sports clubs even conduct grid searches now, prior to games, to ensure players are not at risk. Dog excrement can contain harmful bacteria such as E. coli, giardia and salmonella. If transmitted to other animals or humans by contaminated water or touch it can become a health risk. Tasman District Council’s (TDC) dog control bylaw clearly states that dog owners are required to remove, and dispose of, dog faeces deposited on any land other than their own: “The owner or any person in possession of any dog that defecates in a public place or private way, or on land or premises other than that occupied by the owner, shall imme-

diately remove or cause to be removed the faeces left by the dog. Where a public litter bin or similar receptacle is used to dispose of the faeces they must be suitably wrapped or contained to prevent such receptacle from being fouled.” Ross Connochie, TDC animal control administration officer, says people are liable financially if caught, “the fine is $300. Our Dog Control Officers will take action against any transgressors they come across in the course of their duties. We will give the owner the opportunity to pick up the poo, but if they don’t they will be fined.” Biodegradable corn-starch doggie-do bags are available from TDC office’s around the region.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand are urging people to never enter or re-enter a house where there may be a fire. “If there is any smoke, do not enter. The smoke will quickly overcome you before you are able to react and get out. It’s very important that people know how they can get out of their house, if there is a fire. Have an escape plan and a safe meeting place for everyone who is in the house.”

Work on Waimea Community Dam funding continues

The Tasman District Council will continue to work on options for closing a funding gap of $26 million for the Waimea Community Dam, after receiving an update on the project at its meeting on Thursday, August 9. Chief Executive Janine Dowding outlined progress on the various work underway for the dam, which includes a Local Bill to seek access to DOC land for the dam reservoir and completion of the detailed design. The Council has made an application for $18 million from the Provincial Growth Fund, and is working closely with its joint venture partners Waimea Irrigators Ltd and Crown Irrigation Investments Ltd to find a solution to the funding shortfall. The dam remains the Council’s preferred option for
solving the acute summer water shortages affecting Richmond, Brightwater, Wakefield, Mapua and rural communities of the Waimea Plains, and improving the health of the Waimea River to meet the Council’s obligations under the Resource Management Act, Local Government Act and the National Policy Statement for Freshwater. At a meeting on 28 August, the Council will consider options for closing the funding gap. If the gap can’t be closed by December (when financial close is due), the project won’t proceed. Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne says the rationale for the dam remained compelling, even at the higher price. “I would like to assure people that we have analysed all
the alternatives over a very long period of time. The dam has always been the only option that meets urban, rural and business need and has been the most cost-effective option. It most likely still is, even at the higher price. That’s something we’ll need to know by the 28th. “Rainwater tanks and water conservation measures do not meet our water shortfall. Even if every house in the affected area had a 22,500-litre tank, we would still have to impose severe water restrictions most summers. We simply can’t store enough water that way to meet the urban demand – and if a dry spell lasts for an extended period there is no way to refill tanks until it rains. I can understand how it seems like an obvious solution but unfortunately those
There are just under four weeks until the All Blacks make their Nelson debut at Trafalgar Park on September 8, and there are still more than 2000 tickets left. Celtic Pipe Band to perform on world stage The region’s Celtic Pipe Band is headed overseas in 2019 to make their mark on Scotland at the World Pipe Band Championships. With two days of competition, the World Pipe Band Championships (affectionately known as The World’s) will be showcasing the incredible talent of 8000 pipers and drummers taking part in the event held at Glasgow Green in August. Helen Gilchrist, secretary of Celtic Pipe Band, says “this is the first time a band from the Top of the South has competed overseas, let alone at The World’s.” The Celtic Pipe Band, ranging in ages from 8 to 75, comprises 28 pipers and 25 drummers who are all preparing by using upcoming local events and national competitions as an opportunity to hone their skills. “The key is practice, performance and attention to detail,” says Helen, “whilst having fun and working as a team. All music is memorised so needs to be ingrained in the players psyche, so to speak, in order to perform with confidence.” Pipe Major Callum Gilchrist and his partner Kate Cowin are very much looking forward to the event. Callum is extremely proud of his team and the exciting journey they are on and admits that the battle for the trophy will be tough. He says, “we’ll be ready, and we will take the can-do spirit of New Zealand with us.” The band have a few fund-raisers planned, including a concert on September 9, at the Nelson Centre for Musical Arts, raffles, auctions and a performance at a Mako game on October 11.

advocating it don’t appreciate the scale of the problem we’re facing.” Richard says the consequences of not proceeding with the dam were serious, and it was not a decision the Council would take lightly. “The end of the dam project would signal the start of our new water reality, because it triggers the “no dam” rules in the Tasman Resource Management Plan. Those rules were developed to protect our precious water resource – the Waimea River and its aquifers.” “The unsustainable demands we’re making of our natural water resources has driven our search for a way to boost our water supply when we need it most, and the harsher restrictions will come into effect if there is no dam,” says Richard.

A defibrillator delivers a dose of electric current to the heart. Filco Farm & Sport dealer principal Dave Filer was on hand to receive the life-saving device from St John on Thursday afternoon. “We decided to invest in it to support both our team and the community,” Dave says. He says should an emergency ever occur, his staff will be well prepared. “Pretty much every one of our
staff has done a first aid course at some stage and we continue to do refreshers.” Dave says he was prompted to make the purchase after learning of a lack of defibrillators in the area. “We got talking about where they are in our area and the closest we had to us was Mitre 10 Mega over the road but, there are so many people that live and work on this side of the highway, so we decided to get our own.” He says the $3,500 purchase is an investment to potentially save someone’s life. “We saw that as a pretty cool thing.”

Dave says while they learn lots about fixing motorbikes, jet skis and farm vehicles, all of those things require a person to operate them. “We hope no one ever needs it, but if it ever does, how cool would it be to save someone’s life?” St Johns intensive care paramedic Chris Readie says buying a defibrillator is a great way to support the community. “It is becoming more and more common, which is great.” He says one of the important aspects of purchasing a defibrillator is registering it online so first responders know where the nearest one is at all times.

Reiki, reflexology, chakra balancing and astrology are among the stalls and workshops being showcased at the first Spiritual Connections Expo on Sunday, August 19. Sirian and Adriel, known simply by their first names and who are two of the organisers of the event, welcome the public to ‘come and explore’ what they have to share. “There are a group of us who practice different aspects of healthy living, essential oils and emotional well-being,” says Sirian, “and we want to bring it together for people to see what’s out there.” Adriel says people are becoming disillusioned with the health system and they want people to know there are other alternatives. “Physically, spiritually and mentally, people will be able to take away what they want from it. They can have a little taster at the event and see what they think.” The event has free entry, with the idea to have more of a

Most events charge an entry fee and for a lot of people that is out of reach.” Spiritualist gatherings are already operating in Nelson and Motueka, however the group would like to see
if there is any interest in the Tasman area. “We are seeing what’s out there and are looking to find a way to see if people in the area would be interested in a gathering of like-minded people for discussions, sharing of ideas and questions,” says Sirian. “We see that people are
searching for something, things are shifting, and we want to help people deal with that. People are becoming more aware. They are searching because there is an emptiness inside them, and they aren’t finding that fulfillment with the material things anymore, things are stirring.” There will be 10 main stalls set up in Birch Hall, and workshops running from an adjacent building, with coffee carts and real fruit ice-cream available for purchase. Sirian says they have been thinking about holding the event for a long time, “we feel there is something people need to be made aware of without paying big money for it. We have been blessed with these gifts and we want to share our gifts with other people.” The Spiritual Connections Expo will be held on Sunday August 19, from 10am to 4pm, at the Richmond Showgrounds. Event to aid Indian women Emily Beaumont Reporter
emily@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Witnessing first-hand the plight of women in the Indian city of Thane, Richmond’s Sandra Johnson was compelled to do something about it. The city of around two million remains a slum town largely controlled by the mafia who ensure the people remain impoverished to guarantee a supply of cheap labour. “It’s just crazy, we have to do something. I know we have needs here. But when you walk around a town that has literally no water, not a single drop, you have to help,” says Sandra. Despite a huge water pipe running right past the town, the residents have zero access to water and every day a member from each household dedicates their entire day to sourcing water. Sandra says the situation is very complex and the battle for water is political, not practical, “you can’t just roll in as westerners and sort this overnight”. With large loom factories producing the cloth for clothing, the residents

of Thane provide the cheap labour, and in doing so drastically reduce their future life span to a mere 12 years. A long-time advocate with Tearfund, a Christian charity working alongside churches and other locallybased organisations in over 50 countries, Sandra is now raising funds for Indian NGO Saahasee in a bid to aid the women of Thane. Saahasee works for the development of the urban poor to empower them. On Saturday, August 18, at Richmond’s Headingly Centre from 1011.30am, a ‘Beyond Breakfast’ event is being held with all funds raised going to the women of Thane. Sandra says the event is a sort-of Kitchen Chat Show, presenting seven unusual and interesting ideas from the kitchen, including sour-dough bread, overnight cheese and laundry liquid. It’s sure to be a fun presentation with lots of tastings, recipes and the opportunity to purchase items. “Ramsay to Renoir” is a presentation created by Leimomi Oakes using models in historically accurate recreations of garments from famous paintings, from Ramsay’s portrait of Queen Charlotte to Renoir’s portrait of the actress Jeanne Samary. The event is a fund-raiser for Life Linc - a local charity established by the people of Nelson to provide low cost professional counselling to couples and individuals within the Nelson and Tasman communities. “This is an extraordinary opportunity for people from the region to see history brought to life in such a dramatic manner” says Life Linc’s centre manager Alice Robin. “We are extremely grateful for Leimomi’s generosity in donating her time and expertise for this one-off event”. Mental health is a topic very close to home for Leimomi who, like eighty percent of adults, has suffered from severe depression in the past and says that having access to a reasonably-priced counsellor is really important. “I know how invaluable counselling can be and it is really wonderful for me to be able to give back to something that is so needed and so wonderful.” Lemomi is an internationally renowned costumer and fashion historian. She specialises in recreating historical fashions using period accurate techniques, and in exploring the way historical events and societal mores influenced, and were influenced by, fashion and textiles. The talented artist has faithfully hand created all of the garments which will be worn and displayed by live models while she explores the intersection between art and fashion, and the secret messages coded into paintings.

Harleys coming! After almost two years in negotiation Harley Davidson are coming to Nelson. The American bike manufacturer has appointed its newest distributor with Filco Motorcycles now an official dealer. Dealer principle Dave Filer says he was absolutely wrapt and is aiming at having it all set up in their local Stoke business by the end of October. “We have all been working very hard to make this happen and the feedback we
have is that there is a huge gap in the local market for the Harley brand and, in particular, back-up.” Dave and his team will bring not only factorytrained technicians to the market but a good supply of genuine spare parts and, of course, the very popular Harley Davidson clothing and accessory range. “We now hope we will soon remove that long journey and wait for the Harley owners and they can deal with us on a local level,” says Dave.
He is off shortly to the Harley Davidson conference in USA where over 5000 worldwide dealers meet to catch up with the latest developments and Dave is also sending two mechanics over to HQ in Australia to begin their factory training on Harley Davidson. “Harley Davidson is an iconic brand and with Nelson Tasman district having more bikes per head than anywhere in New Zealand we see a very bright future for our bikes,” he says.

Nelson Matters three reasons for banning Dr Brash talking. Firstly she argued that Dr Brash’s views were not consistent with the University’s recognition of the Treaty of Waitangi. I am proud of our ancestors, both Maori and European, who signed the Treaty of Waitangi founding our country, but it must never be used to silence free speech. The Treaty is no substitute for the Bill of Rights that guarantees basic freedoms for all New Zealanders, regardless of ethnicity. Her second reason for banning Dr Brash was the risk of protest and violence. This is a cowardly excuse. She cited the letter she had

received from an anti-Brash activist on campus. If speeches are to be cancelled after a threat of violence, we effectively provide a thug’s veto to free speech. People have a right to free speech and a right to protest but nobody has the right to commit or threaten violence. The third argument of Professor Thomas was that she and other staff at Massey University did not support Dr Brash’s views against separate Maori representation on Councils and aligned it with hate speech. Most New Zealanders do not support separate Maori Council seats and if that is to be labelled hate speech we are getting into
very dangerous territory. It is particularly concerning that this ban occurred at a University. Our universities should be bastions of free speech and critical thought. Young people today are no less able than previous generations to sort out fact from fiction and right from wrong. Exposing our young people to a diversity of views is healthy. We had our own small incident in Nelson at NMIT earlier this year. The Young Nationals were denied a stand during orientation week by the Students Association despite Labour and the Greens having a presence in previous years. The

issue is before the Human Rights Commission. I hope they conclude that all political parties should be allowed on campus and that students should be free to choose whomever they want to join. Free speech is not an absolute. People do not have a right to incite violence, defame others or cause harm by falsely crying fire in a crowded theatre. But we need to be very cautious of any limits on constraining free expression of political opinions. I concur with our High Court’s view that “Freedom of Expression is the first and last trench in the protection of liberty.” Advt.

Massey University’s decision last week to ban Dr Don Brash from speaking on campus was outrageous. It is part of a worrying global trend of public authorities wanting to censure what we hear. We need to reassert our rights of free speech including for those whose opinions we disagree. The Don Brash example at Massey was particularly galling. He had been invited by the University’s Politic Society to speak on his experiences as a former Reserve Bank Governor and Leader of the Opposition. Massey University’s Vice Chancellor Professor Jan Thomas, gave

The Tasman Drone Racing club has been flying out at Appleby since last year. Ben Henry, chapter manager and one of the founding members of the club, started building his own drone in 2017, after watching clips on YouTube, “you can basically build one yourself. If you can solder, you can build what you want, there is so much information out there it’s not hard to do or find,” and started flying at Appleby reserve. The club is made up of self-pro-

claimed drone racing fanatics and Ben says they want to encourage the sport both within the club and nationally. “We want to get the word out about the club and let people know that we are here and can even help people to build their own drone.” Ben says building a drone is a great way to learn skills with electronics. “We have races or just catch up and go for fun, have freestyle flys.” The club is hoping to bring more events to the region in the future, “we held a national qualifier in November, last
year, and I would love to get another one here or an even bigger event.” Wanting to put a huge emphasis on safety, Bens says joining the club is a great way for novices to learn the ins and outs of drone flying, “we are very aware of the safety issues around drones and there are a lot of places I won’t let the team go or take my gear to. Safety is paramount.” The club meets every fortnight at various locations around the district. For more information check out their Tasman Drone Racing Facebook page.

That includes discussing budget, time-frame and other requirements. “We have Nelson’s only qualified kitchen designer who works alongside a qualified interior designer, so
our clients get qualified, experienced staff from the design stage who clarify the whole process - outlining the timeline of their kitchen." Clients are also able to be a part of their kitchen build right through the process. People can come and view their kitchen being built in the factory and there is a follow up once the kitchen is fully installed. "The designer and I will come to the site and check the kitchen and make sure it's up to Cooper Webley standards. Then, if necessary, minor adjustments can be made. So it’s a nice, open, transparent process.” There is a dedicated team of 17 working at Cooper Webley, including two kitchen designers. “Our team are passionate about their work; everyone wants to generate a beautiful product and make stuff that’s cool, and our joiners are committed to quality craftsmanship,” says Noel. Quality, expertise and innovative thinking, they are just some of the many reasons why people continue to choose Cooper Webley. So if you are looking to install a fabulous new designer kitchen that is uniquely yours, why not make an appointment with one of the friendly, experienced team at Cooper Webley, for some sound advice. Riders from all over the Top of the South travelled to Murchison for the Murchison Pony Club’s Open Dressage and Show Jumping day on August 5. Event organiser Colette Barrow says it was a great day, “with fun had by all!” “I was thrilled to have support from Peter Collins, a course builder from Blenheim, Sue Warne, a jump judge from Reefton, and Nelson dressage judge Suzanne Inglis, all officiating at the event.” The day promised to be a low-key affair with a ‘no-stress-allowed’ day of competition. Open to riders of all levels, Colette says, “most of the competitors went home with a ribbon and a huge smile at their efforts for the day.” Colette re-established the revitalised Murchison Pony Club in May of this year, with the intention of holding monthly rallies to provide riders with a fun, learning environment which fosters the rider’s confidence and abilities. The club caters for all young riders aged 24 and under. For more information contact Colette Barrow, 027-5287063 or 5239215.

Older residents connect with activities and exercise Working with the elderly in the community has Nicola Berthelsen feeling as though she’s landed the employment jackpot. “I have the best job in the world,” she says. The Waimea Anglican Senior Care Coordinator is pulling out all stops to keep the older members of the Brightwater and Wakefield communities fit, sociable and active. On Tuesday, August 7, Nicola organised a double decker bus trip to the Nelson museum, followed by
lunch for 45 people. Nicola works for the Brightwater and Wakefield Anglican churches and heads up the church’s ministry to those over 65 years in the church and the surrounding community. Every week at 10am in the Brightwater Church Hall, participants enjoy games and exercise. “We want to build the community up and the feeling of joy and being uplifted. Older people love to be connected,” says Nicola.

Richmond F45 make premier netball playoffs Richmond F45 has been guaranteed a top four spot in Nelson’s 2018 premier netball championship. With the semi-final playoffs set to take place at 6:15pm on Thursday night at Saxton Stadium, the Richmond F45 netballers will need to call upon their strength and experience if they are to bank a win against Stoke. Richmond F45 gained a win and a loss over the last two weeks, commencing with a low scoring win against Nelson College for Girls. The match began all in Richmond F45’s favour, with a strong first quarter
from Kathleen Thornalley under the hoop, supported by patient passing from Sharon Finch in the midcourt, to end the first quarter 14-5. Kat Jones and Sarah Steele worked well to gain turnover ball in the defensive circle, but a lack of connection resulted in Nelson College for Girls closing in on points and a half time score of 18-16 to Richmond F45. Sarah worked hard in the second quarter with a crucial intercept and excellent defence in the final nail-biting minutes, ending the game 33-32. The Jacks match was not

as convincing for the Richmond F45 contingent. Jacks came out fast and firing on all cylinders, however, despite a 33-12 half time score in their favour, Richmond F45 delivered good clean play in the first two stanzas. Lisa Book was in great form and worked well with Sharon Fin. Jelena Vucinic did well in the shooting circle while Amy Cunningham and Kat Jones combined to convert turnovers on defence, including a “Harrison Hoist” manoeuvre. The game was in the hand of Jacks, settling up at 55-24.

Red Devils remain unbeaten A lovely spring morning at Jubilee on Saturday, August 11, provided the perfect setting for the final football game of the season for the 13th grade Red Devils who took on the Nelson Suburbs Geckos. With the Red Devils looking to secure their top of the table position they started positively with an early goal from Stuart Ingram, and the Reds were not to be denied with striker James Stilwell getting two quick goals, one from a Callum Cousins assist, and then using his pace to run through to make it 3-0. Suburbs scored after a couple of attacking passages of play shortly before half-time and Harvey Adams found the back of the net from close range to make it 4-1 to Richmond. The Red Devils then continued their attack after the break with a few near misses from Ethan King and Stuart Ingram, before James Stilwell made another great run and fired it into the net to get his hat-trick. More pressure from Richmond followed, with man

of the match Reichen Scott making his presence felt all over the park. A change in position for goalkeeper Rylan Marshall resulted in another goal for the Reds to make the final score 6-1, finishing a season to remember for coach Paul Cousins and winning the Red Division with his team unbeaten. It was a beautiful afternoon for football as well, and once again Jubilee Park hosted a number of senior matches.
At 1.15pm the Global Wings Travel Richmond Colts were beaten by a much stronger Motueka team, however Thompson Daly Chartered Accountants Thistle continue their good form by comfortably beating their FC Nelson opponents. And, unfortunately, the Sprig and Fern Stags went down to their Motueka opponents. The Fresh Choice Hornbills were too good for FC Nelson Locomotive, but the Tasman
Auto Electrics Bogans lost to FC Nelson NMIT. At 3pm, in a repeat of last week’s close match, the Fresh Choice Richmond 1st team couldn’t quite find the consistency they’ve shown over the past few weeks, and eventually lost 2–0 to FC Nelson. And in the women’s matches, the About Beauty at Monaco Swans were beaten 1–0 by Nelson College for Girls while the Hothouse Foxes beat Nelson Suburbs 2–0.
Waimea Squash Club hosted the regional C Grade Superchamps during the weekend of 11 and 12 August. For the men’s competition there were four teams of five players, two teams from Waimea, one Nelson Club, and one from Christchurch Club. Waimea also fielded a ladies team, the only ladies entry in this grade, so they faced an invitational squad. The first match on Friday night Waimea 2 played and lost to a dominant Christchurch. The other first round match was Waimea 1 against Nelson, and Waimea 1 had the measure of them, winning 3/2. Round 2 on Saturday morning had the two Waimea teams facing off against each other. After some epic squash Waimea 1 took out the second team. In the final round the two undefeated teams met, Waimea 1 had to beat Christchurch to win the title. Barry Roberts stepped up by arguably playing his best match of the season, taking out his opponent 3-1. Next the number 5’s were on, Liam Gale was the underdog but dug deep to pull off a fantastic 3-1 win. It all came down to the final game and Matt Gibb. Known for his power game, Matt smashed the ball all over the court, and to a huge roar of the crowd dispatched his opponent 3-0. The winning Waimea team have now won the right to travel to the C grade Superchamp Nationals in Napier.

World Championships in 1994. This year the NZ Elite Men’s and Women teams recently returned from the World Championships in Quebec with gold medals, highlighting once again the presence of NZ on the world stage. It was Sophie’s involvement which reignited my passion for Underwater Hockey; I got back into playing and was asked to coach and began coaching the Waimea team. “I love the energy and passion you can put into the game,” says Sophie who is vice captain. “I’m a forward, and there’s also a midfield, a goalie, and two backs or wing positions.” So, six players in the water at one time. “It’s a three-dimensional sport played underwater, so holding your breath is bit of a challenge and getting used to the gear,” says Chris. “You’ve got to wear a mask and snorkel and a pair of flippers or fins, then you’ve also got communication between players to
think about. Everything you do doesn’t necessarily have to be prerehearsed, but there’s an expectation for the whole team to work together, to ensure there’s enough players on the bottom of the pool while the others are at the surface getting air, resting and monitoring the game. A lot of it is preplanned; in certain situations you
are going to do this, and in other situations you’ll do that.” “Underwater Hockey is played with a plastic-coated lead puck weighing around one and a half kilos which is a bit heavier than an ice hockey puck,” says Sophie. “It can be a bit scary when the puck is flicked off the bottom of the pool!”
“I think our chances at the nationals are fairly good given our representation in Wellington,” says Chris. “I’d like to think we’d be mid to high table, but there’s some very strong North Island schools; for us to break into that sort of podium position, I think that would be a big ask for our team participating in the nationals in the first year. In total there are five teams going to the NZSS Nationals Champs from the Nelsun Underwater Hockey Club, including Nelson College Senior and Junior, Nelson College for Girls, Senior and Junior Teams. We would like to thank all our sponsors and the contributions they have made, and we also appreciate the support we’ve had from the team’s management and Nelsun Underwater Hockey Club, in getting us to the championships. wrap-up event. Event organiser and Nelson Dressage vice-president, Suzanne Inglis, says it was a great turnout and a stunner of a day, “The Winter Series this year has been a very good year for entries. We had many firsts for the series, a lot of new faces stepping up to new grades. The lead rein-ers are always a highlight, with the littlies on their ponies, they are pretty cute to see.” Around 90 entries were submit-
ted on the day with everyone giving it their all in their competitions. Jan Morice and Rachel Thomas battled it out for the championship, but Jan was on a winning streak, taking out the title for overall graded horse of the series, for the second year in a row. Suzanne says the summer series will start in six weeks’ time and the club hopes to see everyone back again in warmer conditions.

Downhill biker to compete at championships

Too little too late for rugby teens
Amy Russ Sam Gale will be representing Cycling New Zealand on the world stage at the 2018 Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Mountainbike World Championship, in Lenzerheide Switzerland, in September. After achieving good results at the Mountainbike Under 19 World Cup circuit, in Europe in May, Sam will now be testing his mettle against the world’s best in the downhill section of the championship. The 17 year old says he loves the adrenalin of the sport and is aiming high for the future, “I wouldn’t want to do anything else. Hopefully, one day it will be my job, to be a pro mountainbike rider, that would be pretty cool.” Training on mostly local tracks, like the downhill track at Ben Nevis, Sam has three coaches across the country to keep him focused and at the top of his game. “They send me a gym programme each week that I have to complete, which Cycling New Zealand put together.” His biggest supporters, Sam says, are his mum and dad, Jill and Grant Gale. “Dad mountainbikes with me, which is really cool. He follows me, he tries to keep up,” Sam says cheekily, “and mum comes to most of my races.” Mum Jill is understandably proud of her son. “We are very, very proud of him. He has the potential to go very far.” The family have set up a ‘Help Sam get to World Champs!’ Givealittle page to assist with some of the expenses, “every little bit helps,” says Jill.

Waimea Combined Schools lost 45-14 when they travelled south to play Shirley Boys High School. Waimea looked good when in possession of the ball but poor decisions led to Shirley Boys scoring 21 unanswered points within the first 20 minutes. It wasn’t until Ryan Churchill was put through a hole courtesy of Seth Brown that Waimea was on the board with the conversion from Jack Hahn. Shirley led Waimea into the break 33-7. Waimea woke up in the secondhalf, and strong impact from the bench in the form of Ben Johnston gave the backs quick ball to use, and 10 minutes into the second-half Waimea had their second try when Jan Lammers went through a hole to score, with Jack converting. Waimea defended well but in the end Shirley’s attack was too strong, scoring another two tries in the final 10 minutes. Waimea travel to Christchurch again this weekend to play in the semi-final for the UC Bowl against St Andrews. College.
