Scammers target mobile businesses Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A Richmond business has been caught up in a sophisticated scam offering mobile phones and other electronic devices. FAV Mobile Solutions owner Robin Jordan says staff have received calls from people trying to arrange pick-up for items they have already paid for. However, his business doesn’t sell the items, which have included an iPhone 11 and a PlayStation. “They are expecting to pick the items up from the shop,” he says. “My staff have had to tell them it is a scam.” Robin says the scam seems legitimate, giving the reassurance of local addresses and photos. He has registered his business as Mobile Solutions Ltd and, as director of this registered company, his name and home address are accessible. At least one person checked the photo was correct before purchasing an iPhone advertised online. “I was at home and looking out the window and saw a

woman stop and look at our house,” he says. “I was curious, so asked her what she was doing.” That curiosity probably saved the woman’s friend a lot of money. The friend, who lived in Auckland, had asked her to verify the photo and Richmond address matched before she purchased an iPhone. The house belonged to Robin, but he hadn’t placed the advert. “I knew it was a recent photo because we bought a campervan in the last year and it was there in the photo,” says Robin. Robin advised the woman to report the post to the police. Later that day, the post had been taken down, but he had documented what he saw on the woman’s screen. The email used in the scams is mobilesolutions.nz@gmail. com but has no connection to Robin or his business. Another Nelson business, Mobilic Nelson, has been caught up in the scam using similar email addresses. Their Facebook account was duplicated with the only

Rescued pigeons get ready to take flight Jenny Nicholson Michelle Taylor watched like a nervous mum when her handreared pigeons flew out of their house for the first time. Michelle was approached to care for them about six

months ago after the tree their nest was in was cut down. She has hand-reared and released hurt animals and birds all her life, first alongside her mother and now with her girls Madi, 14 years and Ali, 8 years. But she says hand-rearing pigeons

is quite different. With three of them very young and one having a broken leg, Michelle had a lot of work to help them survive. “I have managed to pull all

difference between the two sites being the email address. It had also posted a photo of the inside of the shop. Mobilic Nelson owner Lana Comerford says she went back through all previous posts and the photo used wasn’t one they had taken. “Someone had been in the shop to take the photo,” she says. Before lockdown, people arriving at the shop to collect items had varying reactions to being told they were victims of a scam. “Some understood, some were upset, some didn’t believe us, and some people told us that we had told them to come into the shop.” She says the scam is a lot bigger than she thought at first. “I’m 100 per cent sure that at least $10,000 has been successfully scammed,” she says. When she notified the police, they told her they couldn’t investigate on behalf of Mobilic, but could for anyone that was scammed. She has encouraged anyone caught up in the scam to report it.

four of them through,” says Michelle. “I’ve grown so attached to them.” “They really still needed their mother,” she says. “Pigeons are not like other birds when it comes to feeding.” Instead of squabs having food put into their mouth, they reverse feed by putting their head into their parents’ mouth to retrieve the food. For Michelle, that meant being inventive. She placed mash into a teat and showed the squabs where to put their head.

At first, she was feeding them every four hours but that devotion has paid off with the birds now totally comfortable around her. They show their acceptance by grooming her eyebrows and hair. Michelle made the most of lockdown which gave her time to watch the birds as she started letting them out of their house. Their personalities shone through with the dominant bird, Susan, being the first to leave. It took a few days for them all to finally fly out, but now they have a predictable pattern of two leaving at a time while the others

guard their home until it is their turn to fly. “They didn’t venture far at first. I’ve had the beautiful opportunity to watch them in lockdown.” Locals in Wakefield have contacted her when they see the birds flying overhead. Michelle says that when they return to her property, they spend time flying in circles before putting themselves away in their cosy house. Pigeons can live up to 20 years, and Michelle expects them to be with her for that time and the likelihood is they will be in the Wakefield skies and further afield for many years.

Port Nelson has achieved a new off-peak season record for container movements and wine and bottle imports, despite facing on-going shipping reliability which is hitting small export businesses in the pocket. During the first half of 2021, almost a quarter of the 80 vessels expected to arrive in Nelson omitted the port, leaving exporters hard hit by disruptions. This, coupled with a 600 per cent increase in container freight costs in the year to July, has left small exporters struggling to get their goods to international markets. However, despite the challenges, Port Nelson saw a recordbreaking week in August with 5141 Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEU) moved during the week of 9 August. During the same week, the port moved 1021 TEU. This was a record number and was the result of record-breaking week for wine and bottle imports and exports - 626 TEU. But a spokesperson says the record level of movements does not indicate an end to ongoing shipping reliability and

Waimea dam build is over halfway mark Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Max and Freya White stumbled across a hidden rock trail in Wakefield’s Faulkner’s Bush while out walking with their dad, Jamie. The boredom busting activity was dreamt up by Wakefield local Rebecca Dephoff and her four children, Grace, 10, Lexa, 8, Freya, 6, Spencer, 4. “I wanted to do something a bit different for a home-schooling day, so the kids collected five rocks each and painted them.” She says the kids’ designs include pictures of puppies, pizza, rainbows, dragons and emojis. She hopes that other families will add their own rocks to the trail or just have fun hunting. Photo: Supplied.

Construction of the Waimea Community Dam is now past the halfway mark after work was allowed to continue during Level 4. This means the region can expect a more secure water supply in just two summers’ time. Waimea Water Ltd (WWL) chief executive Mike Scott says work is progressing at a good rate, despite winter presenting a few challenges. “Aside from freezing conditions at the construction site, there have been significant storm events and then lockdown restricted work for two weeks.” The reinforced rockfill section of the embankment was completed in June, and in early August, the embankment reached a height of 37 metres above the riverbed, leaving just 16 metres to go until the dam reaches its final height of about 53 metres. Mike says the contractor, Fulton Hogan Taylors, has now completed more than half of the 109 layers of kerbing, and construction of the concrete face on top of the

More than 1500m2 of mass concrete was poured into the flip bucket at the base of the spillway during June and July, with 480m2 poured over 14 hours, starting at 3am, with 18 concrete trucks and more than 80 loads. “It was the largest concrete pour on the dam to date,” says Mike. The discovery of some highly fractured rock on the left-hand side of the site has caused some issues. Mike says resolving the rock defects has eaten into the

contingency budget and remains a risk, although the risk is reducing as they progress. “The forecast cost to complete the dam is anticipated to be closer to the upper end of the risk range of $164 million presented in February 2021, which was based on what we knew at the time.” The shareholders, Tasman District Council and Waimea Irrigators Ltd, have agreed to fund their proportionate shares of these cost increases through loans and additional WWL debt.

Using past pain to help others Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Adele Keefe was beaten, kidnapped and thrown from a moving car before police warned her that she would be killed if the domestic violence against her continued. After surviving 20 years of all kinds of abuse, Adele had had enough. Five years on from the last violent incident, she is now helping other women in similar situations find purpose and strength. To escape a violet ex-partner, she fled to Nelson to find safety for herself and her children. After time at Women’s Refuge, she was finally safe, but realised she didn’t know who she was, or what she should do next. She was homeless and suffering from social anxiety. “I had to rebuild myself while trying to find a home and parenting my children alone. I saw my children now had PTSD from the trauma they went through.” Adele realised she needed to become her own advocate. She got support letters for a Housing New Zealand home, taught herself to read and attended parent-

ing courses. Although all these things were steps on her journey to a better life, she credits her Christian faith as being the major change. “I’ve been on a journey of selfdiscovery, learning who I am, not only as a daughter of God but also as a Māori.” Her faith started at the lowest point in her life. Tired of the abuse she was experiencing, she was about to take her own life and had a spiritual encounter. “The Lord came and lifted my head up and told me to rise. Then he told me to come to the South Island,” she says. “I didn’t know where I was going to, but I just drove.” Adele would be the first to say the journey from brokenness to freedom wasn’t easy. Her six children and four mokopuna were the reason she pushed through hard times. She wanted to break the cycle of violence and abuse for her whanau. Having a mentor travel the journey with her made a huge difference. “My mentor was the person there after therapy, when I was left undone with all this pain and didn’t know what to do with it,” says Adele. What Adele learned and experi-

pose, and healthy boundaries. During that time women are supported at appointments that benefit their wellness and are offered one on one mentoring. “Sometimes all someone needs is a safe person to trust and talk to.” Jasinta Paenga attended the last Mana Wahine course. Following years of being told she was a nobody and worthless, she started the course believing those lies. “I came in low and anxious,” she says. “I couldn’t speak in front of people, and I always kept my head down.” Now Jasinta looks up with a big smile, says she is strong, can list things she likes about herself and for the first time is able to implement boundaries in her life. Adele has big dreams. The board of Mana Wahine is looking to start similar programmes for men and youth. In the future, Adele would love to oversee a women’s refuge safe house and a hub to fill the gaps she sees in services. But for now, she is making a difference in the lives of the women she leads and mentors. And that is just five years after walking away from a life of frequent abuse and violence. For more information go to www. manawhanauaotearoa.com

Friends run first marathon for their dads Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Roachelle Ingerson and Jax Winslow have been friends since meeting at the starting line of a half marathon at Rabbit Island eight years ago. So, when their dads recently died within four months of each other, they decided to do something special to honour their memories. “We’re running our first marathon in Queenstown this November to fundraise for the Nelson Tasman Hospice,” says Roachelle. Jax says both their dads were shown so much care, love and support by hospice staff that fundraising for them made perfect sense. “There is a funding shortfall for Nelson Tasman Hospice of $2.5 million each year to provide specialised palliative care. We want to give back by doing this.” Roachelle’s dad Denis died in Nelson Hospice after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer last September. “It’s his first anniversary this week,” says Rochelle. “I told him just before he died that I’d run a marathon for him

Photo: Jo Kent. and, in November, I will.” Jax was a carer for her dad, Hal, in his later years and hospice provided much-needed respite care. “It gave me a welcome break. They provide such a valuable ser-

vice.” Her dad died in January, which brought the friends even closer. “It’s hard when you lose a parent and knowing Roachelle had been through it just months be-

fore meant we could support each other.” Roachelle says they’ve started to ramp up their training sessions despite all the recent wet weekends.

“We have been out in all weathers, wind, rain and even snow, but you have to suck it up as you don’t know what the conditions will be like on the actual day.” Jax reveals the key to their training success so far has been Christmas cake. “It’s perfect, as it’s moist and easy to eat while you are running, and the dried fruit gives us a real boost – there’s no brandy in it though.” At Level 2, the marathon can’t go ahead and, as it’s only 10 weeks away, the pair are worried. “We’ve been training so hard. If we don’t go down to Level 1 it will be tough for us,” says Roachelle. She says if that happens, they may just do something locally instead. “Maybe a big run to Rabbit Island and back or something like that.” As the race is an internationallyrecognised event, many Australian participants have been selling their entry tickets as it’s unlikely they will be able to travel. “It would be awful if alert levels meant it was scrapped for us, too,” says Roachelle. The friends are keen to gain support from locals, so if you’d like to help, go to givealittle.co.nz/ fundraiser/queenstown-marathon-2021-running-for-nelsontasman.

Local women sing through lockdown Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Nelson Bays Harmony didn’t let lockdown stop them singing together every week, they just sang on Zoom. The four-part harmony group has achieved a lot in recent years and didn’t want anything to stop them getting their weekly fix of singing and friendship. The group was established in 1993 and, in 2014, they won the inaugural “audience choice award” at the national women’s barbershop convention. Over the years the chorus has grown in size, but they have

deliberately focused on their caring group culture. They have also added motivational psychology, similar to that used by sports teams to prepare for performances. They have continued to have success under the musical leadership of Kathy Jamieson. A recent highlight was singing on the rugby field in August before the Mako vs Auckland match. Kathy is now keen to step back to singing, and the group are looking for a new musical director to carry on their journey. If you have a passion for acappella singing, ability in choral directing, and have leadership, visit www.nelsonharmony. org.nz.

Georgia Allen lives her motto: “Be the person your younger self needed.” That philosophy has seen Georgia acknowledged for her work with youth in the Nelson Tasman region. Georgia was one of four youth workers recognised for their work with youth at the annual Nelson Tasman Youth Awards last month. The awards celebrate those who have done exceptional work with youth.

In nominating her for the award, Anglican Diocese of Nelson commented on her ability to build strong relationships in both school and faith settings. “It was unexpected and there were many others who do youth work well too,” says Georgia. “But I like that it is publicity for youth work in general.” For the past few years, she has worked at Waimea College. With her love of adventure, she enjoys attending school camps and says a lot of relationship building is done there.

“Being outside the normal school environment helps break down barriers,” she says. Georgia put so much pressure on herself to get great grades in her final years at college that she nearly dropped out of school completely. That experience has helped Georgia to empathise and form connections with others who are sitting mock exams and NCEA and struggling to manage the stress. She wants them to know that they are not weak, and even though it feels like it will

never end, it will. While leading ‘Shine’ at the college, Georgia builds relationships with the girls. Shine is run in groups of eight to 10 girls and aims to instill strength, worth, and purpose. She is also a bridge builder, connecting youth with services they need such as counselling or Kai Rescue. Along with her work at Waimea College, she leads the youth group at St Barnabas Church is Stoke. The other recipients of the award were Barney Hodges, Fi Lankshear, and Sian McClatchy.

Honda Store Nelson is excited to welcome new Brand Ambassador Henrik Henk to their team Henrik brings a wealth of knowledge after spending much of his life in the motor industry in some shape or form. After moving across the world to New Zealand with his wife in 2007, Henrik settled in Auckland where he worked as a salesman in dealerships across the Auckland region before moving into larger NZ franchises. Growing up in Budapest Henrik’s family dealt in antiques, but since moving to NZ he has worked with key brands including Nissan, Volkswagen and BMW, so knows well the choice customers have when searching for a new vehicle. “What I enjoy most is talking to people and really finding out what they are looking for in a vehicle. It’s really not about the bells and whistles, it’s about how they feel while driving the car and that the customer and their family feel safe and comfortable. Nelson has been a place that always stood out to Henrik and his wife as being a place they would love to eventually settle in. “The time was right, our young family was a big incentive to move here, it’s such a beautiful, family-friendly place and the work-life balance was definitely a draw. Having everything on your doorstep, beaches, nature, and a real sense of community.”

Branch manager Graham Price says serving his new role as Honda Brand Ambassador for Honda Store Nelson from September 2021, personal attributes which have quickly stood out for us about Henrik includes his high level of professionalism and integrity, attention to detail, patience, and strong communication skills - qualities we believe you’ll enjoy on your next new car shopping journey. Since Henrik joined Honda on September 1, he has spent hours test-driving the four key Honda models and their sub-models to get a real sense of how they feel on the road. “For me that’s one of the most important things to know when helping a customer into a new vehicle is how it drives in different environments.” Henrik is nothing but positive about his future with Honda and says he’s looking forward to soaking up the wealth of knowledge across the company’s employees. “I love the learning. Here we have parts, servicing, a paint shop, finance, it really is a one-stop shop so there’s a lot of knowledge to soak up and I can’t wait.” Business Update. Adv.

It may be small and unassuming, but St John’s Church in Wakefield has major historical significance. It’s the South Island’s oldest church and the first known piece of New Zealand architecture designed by a woman, Marianne Reay. It’s one of only two buildings known to have been designed by a woman in 19th century New Zealand history. This October marks the church’s 175th anniversary and it’s hoping to mark the occasion with a weekend of celebrations. Rita Bell, a church volunteer, says even with the uncertainty of lockdown levels, they are still forging ahead with the plans but staying mindful that things could be postponed. “As part of the event, we are asking locals to produce arts and craft inspired by such an old and delightful building.” She says that, originally, the artwork was just going to be from schoolchildren to express how they saw the

After winning $500 cash in Waimea Weekly’s Lockdown Scavenger Hunt, the first thing Blake Harwood asked to do was go rock climbing. He and his mother Tamara are going halves on the prize, with Blake set to spend his at the Christchurch Clip and Climb. The ten-year-old will travel south during the school holidays for a BMX competition but will find time for some rock climbing and may even visit the zoo. “We are going to have a bit of fun down there, he wants to do the ‘leap of faith,’” says Tamara.

The competition provided a healthy distraction during lockdown. “It was something else to do to keep us busy, we thought ‘let’s just have a go and have some fun,’” says Tamara. A dozen local companies advertised in the paper, asking a question about themselves for readers to answer and enter the draw. “One of them was about wine and one about a pink bathroom,” says Blake. Tamara says it was also a good exercise in developing research skills. “He had to really think about where he would find the information.”

How do YOU choose? Buying and selling property is always a momentous occasion and likely the biggest financial transaction you will ever make. And so, it is vitally important that you choose a real estate agent who will make it a successful, straightforward, stress free and profitable process. If you are selling, everything rests on the results. The sale price will determine what you can afford to spend on your next step on the property ladder, and if you are downsizing that figure can determine how your retirement years will look. When you are buying you need someone who recognises that this isn’t just a house. It is the place you will call home and where you will happily spend your days or raise your family. You need an agent who will pave the way to making your dreams come true. So how do you choose that perfect person? Proven results will feature high on the list, as will knowing you can trust them to be firmly in your corner, every step of the way. Reputation is paramount, both being respected and recognised by both those in the industry and by the happy and satisfied clients they have represented. And sometimes the thing that will make them

stand above the others is knowing that they are a good and decent person. Tracy Beer ticks all those boxes. Just this week Tracy has received a Mike Pero Elite Agent Recognition Award, one of the highest recognitions from the NZ wide franchise group, and yet another to add to an impressive collection of awards. Recently, all of the properties Tracy has listed and sold have exceeded the expectations of her vendors with many being sold in just a few days. Tracy uses a clever mix of marketing strategies to ensure effective promotion of your property, backed up by a long list of buyers who are waiting to find their perfect home. But perhaps the most important of all is the long list of happy clients she has worked with. A visit to read the testimonials on her website is highly recommended to find out why these people wholeheartedly recommend hiring her. There’s just not enough room to list them all here, so go online to read about the service, commitment, professionalism, and skills that have made Tracy YOUR best choice to ensure you get the results you deserve. Are you relaxed about your future? Most of us want our lifestyle to continue through our retirement years, but this takes careful planning. For most of us our KiwiSaver alone will not provide the lifestyle we desire. Equally a comfortable retirement is achievable for most of us if we plan and act now. The earlier we start the better. There are some basic steps:

WEDNESDAY 15 September 2021

Storage

1. Decide your objective – what kind of lifestyle do you want in retirement? Do you want to travel? 2. Calculate where you are in relation to what you want to achieve. How far will your current investment, e.g. KiwiSaver, get you towards your goal? 3. Consider the gap between where you are heading and where you hope to be. What does it take to bridge this gap? What are the options available to you to? 4. Review your progress regularly and make adjustments as necessary. 5. Protect your current position, for example insure your income so your plan remains on track despite unforeseen events. Enlisting the help of a professional financial adviser has been proved to greatly increase your chances of getting to your goals.

Last year 4100 men were diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in New Zealand, 700 died from it and it is getting worse each year. Now Prostate Cancer kills more men than does Breast Cancer women and it is the 3rd highest cancer killer in NZ. Statistics for Māori and Pacific Islander men are also significantly worse than for men of European descent and other ethnicities. However, the latest research proves that organised screening for Prostate Cancer will definitely save many lives otherwise lost and now seldom leads to false positives and overtreatments, generally now problems well in the past. These are no longer reasons not to have a screening programme. The unnecessarily large cohort of men who live with what is found to be terminal and incurable Prostate Cancer strongly advocate for free screening programmes to join already existing programmes for Breast, Cervical,

Local History exploring our

Proudly brought to you by...

The adventures of Brunner and Kehu - Part Two Ruth Russ Charles Heaphy wrote of Kehu “A good shot, one who takes care never to miss his bird, a capital manager of a canoe, a sure snarer of wild fowl, and a superb fellow at a ford … he is worth his weight in tobacco.” In March 1846, Kehu led Charles Heaphy and Thomas Brunner from Aorere in Golden Bay down the coast to the mouth of the Buller River. This journey was not quite the picnic-like jaunt in Murchison that they had taken in the summer. Heaphy wrote of Kehu’s fishing methods: “To dispel all feelings of lonesomeness, [Kehu] commenced chanting his Wesleyan missionary service, mixing with the translated version of the ritual special incantations to … the

lake and the river for propitious weather and easy fords, together with request to the eels to bite quickly, and not keep him longer in the cold. Then, as he caught one which would not die quick enough to please him, would he introduce some decidedly uncomplimentary language which he had learnt at a whaling station, and again subside into the recitation of his Wesleyan catechism and hymnbook.” At the Pakawau Pā, Heaphy and Brunner hired another Māori, who turned out to be Tau of Ngāi Tahu, the tribe which had killed Kehu’s father 30 years earlier. However, Heaphy writes that Kehu and Tau “became merry at the idea of journeying to [Buller] together”. In April, Heaphy wrote, “At the Kahurangi, the geological for-

mation of the country changes, and a coarse red granatoid appears… With this change in the formation, the character of the coast also alters, and precipitous cliffs with rugged offshore rocks begin… Here, therefore the difficulties of the path commence… On April 27 we came to the Mokinui River. It was undoubtedly the most dangerous ford which I have met with in New Zealand.” Heaphy and Brunner used poles tied together and held abreast as they crossed the river. “I cannot but recommend the plan is worthy of the attention of settlers in a district in which so many valuable lives have been lost to swollen streams,” wrote Heaphy. They also made a nerve-wracking climb of the massive Miko Cliff using flax-lashed ladders left by

Hokitika. They saw coal on their travels and estimated there were about 2,000 acres of land suitable for farming near the Whanganui Inlet. Without Kehu to guide them, Brunner and Heaphy would have been lost. Heaphy noted in July, “we were now about as low condition as it was possible to be still to retain health.”. Their 25-pound packs now seemed more tiring than what were 50-pound packs at the beginning of their expedition. Kehu’s hunting and gathering skills, as well as the kindness and hospitality of Māori encountered along Charles Heaphy wrote at length the way, were invaluable. about his travelling companion Brunner was not put off by the Kehu. From Pakawau they mer, with Kehu to guide him, of travelled to Arahura, north of course.

Getting ready for a great season Tracey Meek Spring is here and with this there are exciting times ahead as the snapper make their way back into the bay. It won’t be long and we will be hearing reports of early snapper and fish aplenty – so you will want to be ready. Now is a good time to get your boat serviced, stock up on all your fishing supplies, check those rods and start planning your fishing trips. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club are also gearing up for another great season of fishing, friends, trips away, stories and fishing tips and tricks. If you have ever wondered about joining the club, now is a great time. We welcome anyone interested in fishing – kayakers, land based and those with or without boats. Our season begins on 1st October and we have a season-wide competition with

a prizegiving in June. We also proudly organize the Snapper Cup with help from our valued sponsors. The committee have organised an OPEN DAY on Sunday 19th September, (subject to Covid levels) at the Nelson City/Suburban Club, 1 Kinzett Terrace, 3pm to 5pm. We will have the bouncy castle there for the kids, a casting competition for both adults and kids, raffles, spot prizes and the club will provide a BBQ snack. We aim to make the club accessible to all and keep our membership as low as possible. Fees: $65 senior single, $120 per family (2 adults + up to 3 juniors) and $20 single junior. NB: If you’re just husband and wife or partner you can still register as a family. So come along on 19th September and talk ‘fishing’ you may get to share in some of those fishing tips and tricks.

Local sport set to return

Football: Nelson Bays Football has made the decision to cancel the remainder of the junior football season. Local senior competitions will be concluded on Saturday with a final round the following weekend for divisions requiring two matches to declare a winner. There will be no club cups for the 2021 season. With three rounds remaining in the Southern League, competition is set to resume on Saturday with Nelson Suburbs hosting frontrunners Cashmere Technical at Saxton Field. In division one action, the two top sides in the senior men’s division will square off in Marlborough this Saturday. Rangers and Richmond both sit on 31 points with ten wins and their clash will decide the 2021 champions. The Richmond Foxes are assured the title and will play its final game against Suburbs at Saxton Field. Rugby: New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has confirmed the NPC, Farah Palmer Cup and Heartland Championship, outside of Auckland, will recommence from this Friday. The Tasman Mako will resume its campaign on Saturday afternoon against Northland at Semenoff Stadium. Kick off 4.35pm. The Miles Toyota 1st XV final between

Nelson College and Christ’s College will go ahead in Nelson on Saturday, venue and time TBC, however, with no public attendance. The winner of this game will play against Otago Boys’ High School in Dunedin for the South Island Title. Tasman Rugby says it still has U16 rep boys and U19 girls in the pipelines though this is yet to be confirmed. All other junior rugby is finished for the year.

Local football will start back up again on Saturday. Photo: Shuttersport. Hockey: The Nelson Hockey facility is open again and competition will resume this week. Tasman White sits comfortably atop the men’s premier table with 14 wins and a draw from its 15 games. It’s a similar

story in the women’s division with Waimai United suffering just one loss all season. There are strict level two measures in place including a limit of 100 people per turf and the umpire room, changing rooms and downstairs toilets downstairs will be closed. The Nelson Hockey Association hopes competition will conclude just before the school holidays. Basketball: Club basketball will return to Saxton Stadium and Jack Robins this week. Masks to and from games are mandatory however these do not need to be on whilst playing. There will be no spectators at games, just players, one coach and one manager. Teams will only enter the facility once the previous players have left. Toilets and drinking fountains will be out of order. The club semifinals will take place this week with the premier finals to be played the week after. Netball: The Nelson Netball Centre was forced to cancel the remaining three rounds of competition. Board chairman Gary Cox says they are gutted with the changes to Level 2 which have prevented the end of season games.

And we are all owned by local families. We eat sleep and drink in the same towns as you. We know what’s going on and we report it. So when you want to tell the locals something, the choice is simple. Use us. More experience, more papers, more choice. Call our market team today and let us help your business prosper.
