Are quad bikes that unsafe? Phillip Rollo
Robert Morrison is the owner of what is believed to be the most photographed building in the Nelson region. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Appleby’s photogenic wool shed Looking across the counter of a paint shop in town, Robert Morrison noticed a photo of an old rusty, run down Appleby home. The house didn’t have any significance to him, other than the fact he owns it. Ever since that day, the Namibiabased commodity trader has come across many similar photos of the building on the Appleby Straight, some that are even for sale at the Saturday market. It’s a favourite location for many local wedding photographers and some would say it is now the most photographed in the region. “The first time it was on a calendar on old derelict houses in
the South Island,” Robert says. “The next time some lady had taken a photo of it and painted onto canvas. I thought ‘where did you get that from?’” Robert says his one issue with the amount of photography exposure has been the lack of communication from people wishing to come onto the property. “I don’t mind though, as long as they ask. I was talking to my accountant the other day and he mentioned every time he drives past there are people out getting photographed.” Robert bought the 50 acre block off the late David Harford in 2001 for
agriculture and horticulture use. The house, believed to have been built in either the late 1800s or early 1900s, still has no significance to him and will only remain long term if it has some sort of financial viability. The reason the house is there? It was part of the package. The property is currently being leased out to Snap Fresh Foods, who do all their salad processing in Stoke, and it was previously leased out to the O’Connor family. Robert was unsure of the history of the house, but found some plans SEE PAGE 2
A spate of quad bike accidents around the country has sparked debate around the safety of the much-used farming vehicle, but Nelson authorities say common sense will help save lives, not harsher restrictions. Nation-wide there were five quad bike accidents over the Christmas-New Year period with two ending in fatalities. According to the New Zealand Herald, Wellington Coroner Ian Smith voiced frustration over the quad bike safety issues and called on the Government to investigate making helmets, lap belts and roll bars compulsory. While ATV helmets are compulsory on farms and it is “pretty normal” practice for most employees to attend training courses, Nelson’s Federated Farmers president Gavin O’Donnell says lap belts and roll bars

Carl Doocey of Morley’s Motorcycle and Marine says helmets save lives. are not the answer. “The point I’d like to make from the accidents that have happened in the past few weeks, from what I know about the accidents, I don’t think a helmet would have saved their lives anyway,” says Gavin. “The guy that went over the cliff, crikey, how do you stop that?” Gavin’s response to the coroner’s suggestion on lap belts and roll bars was that he would rather “chance his arm” at being able to survive a roll over without being tied into a machine. Appleby’s photogenic wool shed FROM PAGE 1 from the Canterbury Agriculture Society that wished to turn it into a wool shed in the 1960s. Bryan Ford, a nearby resident says he used to walk past the house on his way to Appleby School in the 1940s. He knew some details but was unsure of the actual date the house was built. “It was owned by Arthur Harford and they built another house and moved out. David Harford, their son, farmed the land right through and obviously used it as a wool shed.” At the moment Robert has no issue with leaving the building intact, but one day, unless
it has some commercial viability, it will be pulled down. “To me it’s not worth retaining but a lot of people get satisfaction and pleasure out of taking photos here.” Bryan says the building became a popular location for photographers in the past 15 years and labelled it as unique. “It’s not exactly a historic trust’s sort of building though. I imagine no one will spend money on it and while it would’ve been built with good rimu timber, time will probably take its toll. It’s sad to see buildings go and while it would be sad to see it go, I’m not overly sentimental about it.”

Overseas media get a whiff of our wine Phillip Rollo Nelson’s aromatic wine industry will be the focus of international media next month when a symposium is held in Upper Moutere. A select group of the world’s most influential wine commentators will descend on the region following the Pinot Noir 2013 conference in Wellington. In Upper Moutere they will taste, compare and discuss locally created aromatic wines, which Nelson Wineart manager Gisela Purcell believes could lead to more exposure. “It’s kind of indirect marketing. It’s a real coup to get these people to come to Nelson so we need to make it worth their while,” says Gisela. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to educate them on the whole region and it’s a really good opportunity at a high level to create more awareness.”

Aromatic refers to certain grape varieties that have a “really nice aroma,” she says. Those white grape varieties include riesling, gruner veltliner and pinot gris. “Often the smell of the aroma is quite different to the taste and it’s a key feature of those. These are ones that grow quite well.” Gisela says the gruner veltliner has “huge potential” and is a relatively new variety here in Nelson and winemakers are still learning on how to grow it. “It’s quite new here so we’re looking at maximising it in the Nelson climate.” The local conference has been held every three years and this year will be based at the Moutere Hills Community Centre on February 1 and 2. Are quad bikes really unsafe? FROM PAGE 1 “I’ve seen quad bikes roll down slopes and there is no way in hell that I would like to strapped into them. I believe there’s real potential for it to be worse. Does the coroner understand what type of bouncy balls these quad bikes become?” Gavin believes each accident should be looked at on a case-by-case basis, and whether lap belts and rolls cages would have prevented the injuries. Carl Doocey of Morley’s Motorcycle and Marine believes common sense would go a long way to preventing
some of these accidents. “At the end of the day it’s a piece of machinery and it needs to be respected. You ride within your ability; you ride with care and to the conditions.” Those points were echoed by Gavin. “Quad bikes have their limitations but so does every other piece of farm equipment. When it’s parked in the shed nothing happens, it’s not until you put someone on it so the problem is with the people on the machinery,” says Gavin. “You can provide them with all sorts of physical things but it’s the thing that’s between the ears that is the real problem.”

A fully grown great white butterfly caterpillar has been discovered at a Richmond property.
Pest butterfly found in Richmond homes
Householders in the Tasman District are being asked to look for great white butterfly caterpillars and eggs in their gardens, following first reports of the pest in six Richmond properties. Great white butterfly caterpillars and eggs are found mostly in clusters on plants they favour, particularly nasturtium, honesty and brassica vegetables, including broccoli and cabbage. The caterpillars are speckled black and greyishgreen with three yellow lines along their bodies and the tiny, yellow eggs are in clusters of 30 to 100. The Department of Conservation is leading a multi-agency attempt to eradicate the butter-

fly species, which was first found in Nelson, in a bid to stop it becoming a major pest in New Zealand. It is a serious threat to commercial and home brassica crops, and to native cresses, according to DOC. DOC Motueka area manager Martin Rodd says there had been a good response from NelsonTasman residents to requests to look for butterfly infestations and report sightings. “We thank the Nelson-Tasman community for its fantastic support for the great white butterfly eradication programme. We have now had more than 400 confirmed finds of it on properties since it was first discovered.”

Fire at Eves Valley
Helicopters fly across Eves Valley with monsoon buckets. Photo: Blair Hall/Imagepress.co.nz
Tourists escape, vans don’t Four overseas tourists have had a lucky escape after their campervans were caught in rising waters in the Waimea River, sparking a search and rescue operation on Tuesday morning. The group, in their late teens and early 20s had driven on to the river bed and parked two vans under the Appleby Bridge for the night. It rained heavily all night on Monday and about 9.30am the next morning one of the group woke to the sound of water entering the van. He then woke the other campers and they tried to push the front van out of the river. Senior constable Dave Colville of Nelson Police says that unfortunately the two vans had been tied together to create a washing line and that prevented the group from pushing the first van out. They then started emptying their possessions out of the vans. When some items were washed away one of the group swam after them. He was washed away in the current and ended up making it to the bank on the opposite side of the river. He then crossed back over the river and was located some way downstream. The vans were last seen floating down the river and as of Tuesday afternoon are yet to be located. The harbour masters have been informed, says police. The group of tourists had been taken to a campground to dry their gear out and told they were very luck to have escaped unharmed. They advised other campers that parking on a river bed in torrential rain was not a safe option.
Last night’s heavy rain would have been welcome news for the Rural Fire Network after it was called out to yet another fire last week. This fire, which burned a half hectare forestry area in Eves Valley, was kept under control by three helicopters with monsoon buckets and fire fighters from Appleby, Brightwater and Wakefield. Ian Reade, principal fire officer of the Waimea Rural Fire Network, says the cause of the fire was still under investigation but there were no buildings at risk in the fire.
The fire was under control within 45 minutes with helicopters assisting the ground team. Ian says up until yesterday the region had become quite dry, which creates a higher risk of danger. “We were expecting long dry periods with heavy amounts of rain at the end of it and that is pretty much what we got,” says Ian. “This rain will help us for a few weeks.” Ian says rural fires have been “off and on” throughout the summer and people burning without permits were generally at fault.

There was the time when Ron Barnes was volunteering at the Richmond District Information Centre on December 25 and an out-of-town couple came in wanting to know where the best place they could go for their Christmas dinner would be. Knowing everything in town was closed, the now-volunteer of 25 years sent them on their way to St Arnaud, hoping the more than an hour drive would be worth it. Thinking that was the last he would hear from them, Ron was bemused when they came back the next day. But they were there to thank him for his suggestion saying it was the best meal they had ever had. Ron, who is one of four founding members,

which also includes Elaine Salvador, Hazel Bartlett and Ngaire Smith, of the information centre on Gladstone Rd next to Jubilee Park, says there have been many great times over the past 25 years but that was probably his funniest moment. “That was an isolated case,” he laughs. Elaine says her funniest moment was when a hitchhiker was heading south down Gladstone Rd. He explained to her that he had walked all of the way from Nelson and asked if he was getting closer to Picton. “We told him no, you might want to head back the other way,” she says. When the Tasman District Council was sending out its rates in 1987, it suggested that some people might like to volunteer for a new information centre opening in Richmond. The information centre was much busier in its early days because it was the only place you could pick up brochures on what activities you could do in the region. The volunteers were situated in a Skyline shed, which was donated for their use. “When we answered the phone we had to say ‘Skyline
information centre’, giving them a free plug. But after awhile they sold it,” says Elaine. Hazel recalls having queues of tourists all the way down the road, waiting to come in because the first building was so small that once there was a table and chairs put in, hardly anyone could even be inside it. “There were 70 people in one session,” she says. “It varies now, now the holiday parks have their own brochures and people are staying there.” The building has gone through three major changes during the past 25 years, upgrading from a shed to a builders hut and then to the building they occupy today – which was built by the local rotary club. “We used to have to shoot across the road to the holiday park to use their toilet so you didn’t want to leave your run too late otherwise you’d get caught in the traffic.” Elaine never imagined she would still be a volunteer at the information centre after 25 years. Currently there are 32 volunteers on a rotational roster and they each work at least once a fortnight.

Habitat needs you Around 30 Nelsonians have signed up and team leader Rob Silcock says he now needs just a few more to fill his group to help build houses in Cambodia this April. No building or practical experience is necessary and Rob says the build is a chance to make a real difference, learn about the Cambodian culture and have the experience of a life time. “There’s no upper age limit and you are needed. For every seven people we send we can build an-
other house and they are desperately needed so you are desperately needed,” says Rob. If you are thinking about giving it a go but aren’t too sure about a few things Rob says you can give him a call and talk it over as he’s been there on a Habitat for Humanity build many times before. To find out more about the trip you can call Rob on 021 221 8978 or after hours on 541 0991 or you can call Hayden Campbell on 021 543 530 or after hours on 547 7554.

Serendipity Equine Training Evolution is underway just around the corner. In beautiful Garden Valley near Brightwater, a professional horse training facility is evolving and adapting its approach to training. Using a variety of techniques, both on the ground and in the saddle, Serendipity Equine Training designs a training programme to enhance rider confidence and promote communication between handler and horse. These days the focus is the relationship between the horse and his or her human, developing and nurturing this relationship with amazing results for all involved. Serendipity understands that each horse is unique, so treatment and training is tailored to suit, with a focus on horse and rider communication and safety. The evolution doesn’t stop there, with the power of the horsehuman relationship being developed further as a therapeutic tool to assist young people in the Nelson area. It’s quite an eye-opener and Joanne Ragg, proprietor and head trainer, is careful to maintain an open-door policy. Serendipity Equine Training is well worth a visit. Skill training for working outdoors for 2013 Working in the rural sector is still a really good career option if you like working in the outdoors or with animals. bike and quads, driving 4WD’s and tractors, and using chainsaws. The courses are practically based and can be really affordable if you follow certain options. Chris Clark, regional tutor for FarmSafe has recently received Ag Excel endorsement, and industry endorsement which reflects the quality of his training and assessing in a range of these skills. A new dawn a new Dale
Dream it, Live it
At six o'clock on Saturday night, Dale McKenzie was driving for survival. The 19 year old had only managed seventh place in his New Zealand Home Loans NZ Superstock Championship heat and had to rely on a repercharge just to qualify through to the last stage. An hour later, he was being interviewed by Dave Birdling in the centre of the track as one of two drivers that were added to the 24 already qualified finalists – the proudest moment of his young career, as it finally sunk in that he had made it. But by 10pm, Dale had a new highlight and some silverware to show for it. The 85n driver was the new 2NZ, being pipped by just one point as Palmerston North's Shane Penn and 23 year old club-mate Thomas Stanaway made up the rest of the podium spots. Reflecting on the night of his life, Dale Junior's emotions had come full circle in just 24 hours. "I knew the car was going fast enough, that it was on the home track and if there was enough Nelson boys in the final then winning was definitely possible. But I was hoping to have a clean run in the qualifying and get straight through and it definitely didn't work out that way," he says. "It feels pretty good now but I'd say once it sinks in that I'm 2NZ it will be even better." All eyes were on three-time winner Craig Boote as the superstocks spilled out onto the track for the third and final heat of the championship. The 7n driver was sitting pretty in third place and was handed fifth on the grid, giving fans hope he could become the most decorated driver the class has ever seen. But in a matter of laps 'The Boss' was gone. Targeted by two Palmy tanks, Craig was battered, bruised and thrown into the wall at every turn. He ended the night in 11th position, much lower than he deserved after showing vintage Boote form all weekend. Nick Fowler, the South Island champion driving Craig's old car, was leading the points tally going into the final race but also couldn't survive the wreckage. He finished tenth. Shane Harwood did survive but a
poor first race, which saw him collect just three points before his second race win, denied him the chance to challenge for a podium spot. He finished a very credible eighth. Brett Nicholls was said to be a dark horse at this event but the end of the night he would be better known as 'Mr Consistent' collecting 17, 15 and 19 points to finish sixth place overall. So it was left up to the two young guns to do the business as Dale and Thomas avoided trouble to finish second and sixth in the final heat, giving them their first ever podium finishes at a national championship. In some of the other local results, Blair Cunningham finished 19th, Jared Gray finished 21st and Ian Clayworth was 25th. Dale knew he would be a target in the final but didn't let it get to him before the race. There were times he had to weave and push his way past other superstocks but he admits he was barely touched. "It's not scary but you don't know who is going to do what. You have to watch out." He felt for Craig and Nick, who came so close to victory. "Everyone works so hard for it. You go into that final heat and it only takes one person to stuff your whole night up and that is your title hopes gone. I'm definitely gutted for those guys but at the same time I got on the podium because of that." Nelson Speedway president Kris Carpenter says it was "an awesome" result for the club to have two of the top three in the country. She also says it was not surprising that some of the early favourites were targeted in the final race as it occurs at every national championship. "It's not over until the last race. It was basically teams racing out there. I'm gutted for some of the guys but also rapt for the young boys, that was one of the best results we could have got." All of the Nelson drivers will head to Christchurch this weekend for the New Zealand Superstock Grand Prix in Woodford Glen. For some it will be a chance at redemption, for others it could be chance to prove why they are now the country's best.

Fishing with
Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Well time for the first update of the New Year. I hope everyone made the most of the good weather before the wind turned up. The visibility of water along the Boulder Bank had been unreal with 12 meters of clear water not uncommon. Good numbers of smaller snapper are almost everywhere in the bay now with good numbers getting caught off Rabbit Island and along the Boulder Bank. The small kingfish are still in massive numbers and it’s good to hear a few club members took our advice and shot out for a troll and nailed a few, well done. Some bigger kingfish have been caught there as well last week so make sure your gear is up for a 20kg in case it smashes your line. The spearo’s have been having great success out along the Boulder Bank with the Glen end producing easy pickings for kingfish. Once the sea cleans up again the snapper will be in close at Rabbit Island and Back Beach. Get out at daylight for best results. It is always good to know about land based fishing options if the weather is a little windy for the boat. Another good spot is Kina Beach with many a night fishing there for snapper. Find the cockle beds during the day then fished on them at night. French Pass has still not really fired up with the odd kingie showing up but the big numbers of larger snapper have not turned up yet, hopefully in the next few weeks this will change. Tasman Bay is still running at about 18 degrees out wide with no reports of tuna yet. From the look of the surface temp charts I think it will be another few weeks yet before
Inari McKay with a blue cod caught at Awaroa in the Abel Tasman over the holidays. they turn up. We will let you know when they are here as the season is short so you need to get out and hit them while you can. Stephens as normal for this time of the year is almost dead unless you want a blue cod. Remember the slot fishery is in force now so only fish between 30cm and 35cm. Some good news on the snapper front in the Marlborough Sounds. Finally some reports of good sized fish getting taken in Kenepuru Sound. Remember best to fish in the late evening and early morning before all the loopies get up and stir the water up and scare the fish away. The weather update for this weekend is looking excellent so you have no excuses, go check the gear now and load the boat, it’s going to be a stunner. Also don’t forget the Motueka RSA competition coming up on the 18– 20 Jan. And last but not least for the kids out there have you ever thought of joining the Sea Cadets, it’s an awesome way to get sea experience and meet new people, I would highly recommend it.

Falcons stun champions Phillip Rollo
The Nelson Falcons have introduced themselves in the second best way possible by drawing 2-2 with last year’s champions Canterbury United, in their first official match. The ASB Youth League newcomers left it late, with Blenheim striker Omar Guardiola scoring a screamer with just five minutes to go on the clock before substitute Harry Tod-Smith equalised in stoppage time, canceling out Canterbury’s two previous strikes, in front of a bumper crowd at Trafalgar Park. New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Falcons coach Davor Tavich, who rung three changes at half time, says the side can take plenty of confidence out of the performance, in particular during the final stages of the match. “The main message [at halftime] was to pick up the intensity and match Canterbury, who are a physically strong side and are technically very good,” he says. “I’m definitely sure that the boys are going to take a lot from this game. The nerves are probably gone now. I think we are going to get a few more results.” Davor acknowledged the side did miss some key chances with Omar hitting the post just minutes after Canterbury’s opening goal
while Tore Waechter missed a second half penalty. “It’s football though, you know? Those things happen and you just have to play on. It’s not the end until the final whistle blows.” But two of the side’s best chances actually came from goal keeper Coey Turipa who tested his opposite from a spot kick just beyond the halfway line. He then got a header on target after leaving his box in the dying stages to join a corner. Davor credited the difference Nayland College captain Sam Maxwell made in the middle of the park when he came on while also praising the defensive efforts of Mark Johnston and USbased Erik Panzer, and the busy Omar. Erik was only available for one match before returning for his second year at Quinnipiac University so will miss this Sunday’s clash against YoungHeart Manawatu which kicks off at 2pm at Trafalgar Park. Davor was undecided as to who would replace the former Canterbury United youth captain in the heart of the defense but says that it was likely to be one of only a few changes to the match-day squad.

Ready to reel in the big one A fishing contest hosted by the Motueka RSA will be held all over the Top of the South this weekend, giving fishermen and women a chance to head out into their favourite spots. Pat Hall, the organiser of the McCashin’s Brewery-sponsored event, says there is no set area to fish in. “You could technically head to Vanuatu for the weekend as long as you’re back here for the weigh in between 1pm and 3pm on Sunday,” he says. Pat says while the event was competitive, it was mainly targeted at families. “We have quite a strong children’s section and it’s run in conjunction with the take a kid fishing programme we run once a year. We just want to encourage families to get out there and have a fun day. If you want to get serious you can.” There will be a number of prizes in a variety of sections included heaviest fish, average weight
fish, heaviest snapper over 20 pounds (9.07kg) which has yet to be claimed, average weight snapper and many others. A snapper was caught two years ago weighing 85 grams shy of the magic 9 kg mark. Pat says there has been 27 kg groper recorded and it is common to see some “extremely large” kingfish caught during the weekend. Fish caught on the first two days are usually kept on ice, because if it is frozen there is no way to indentify if it was freshly caught. The competition officially begins at 5pm on Friday and there are no restrictions as to how long you can fish for, as long as you are at the Motueka RSA car park on Sunday by 1pm. Entry fee is $25 per adult and $5 per child. You can register at Totally Boating, Stirling Sport, McCashin’s Brewery and Hunting and Fishing by Friday night.

Crowds turn out for Wakefield leg The Tasman Skatepark Tour treated the Wakefield community to an extreme display of board riding trickery, as Whitby Way car park was transformed into one massive terrain park. The smooth, flat asphalt surface, combined with a set of ramps, rails and boxes from the Cheapskates portable skatepark provided the catalyst for around 40 skate and scooter enthusiasts to show off their skill set in front of a vocal 150 plus strong crowd. The junior scooter section attracted a couple of new faces, and fresh moves were enough for Alex Scott from Nelson to take out top honours. In the senior section, there appears to be no stopping Mita Timpson, who once again stamped his authority on the senior scooter sec-
tion. He picked himself up the maximum five competition points and has opened up a sizeable gap on the rest of the field on the tour leader board. Alex showed his versatility, backing up his first place in the junior scooter, with a first placing in the junior skate section. The much anticipated senior skate section lived up to all expectations, with Jake King unstoppable again on his way to claiming first place. He is now three from three, and in a commanding position on the leader board. In the open section, Liam McAlister took top honours’, with some busting big airs and chunky grinds to move to second overall. The Tasman Skatepark Tour heads to Tapawera tonight for the next leg of the series.

We have great deals, new airlines and new faces The USA and Hawaii have never been cheaper or easier to get to with Hawaiian airlines now flying direct into Auckland. Enjoy accessing the mainland USA without going via San Francisco or LA and then you can stop off for a beach break on the way home to relax after all the shopping and visiting Disneyland. You’ll need to book early to get the best deals on your winter Pacific Island holiday, especially Rarotonga. I know that winter seems so far away in this heat but if From left:
Carmel Tocker, Marisa Lunai, Kylie Pauling, Nicola Deane, Michelle Wilson, Rhonda Doole, Tena Stanbridge, Kathryn Preston, Sally Mallory.
Michelle has returned to NZ after being a travel agent in the UK for 11 years. She has travelled extensively through the UK, Asia and parts of Africa. She has trekked in Nepal and visited the stunning palaces in Rajasthan. She even got married in Sri Lanka and honeymooned in the Maldives. She has been to Cuba and is now looking forward to exploring the Pacific islands.”One of my favourite places to visit is Sri Lanka for its superb ancient sites, magnificent scenery, amazing wildlife, delicious cuisine, incredibly friendly locals and to top it off lovely palm-fringed, white sandy beaches.””Another one of my favourite places would have to be South Africa. It has it all – untamed coastlines, high mountains and lush forests, varied marine life, vineyards and last, but by no means least, some of the best game viewing in the world.” Michelle is looking forward to sharing her knowledge of these adventurous destinations, as well as helping you with every aspect of your travel plans.
New Faces
Carmel joined us last October as an experienced travel consultant. She is a local Nelsonian who has been travelling the world for many years. She has been to an impressive 71 countries... She finds it impossible to narrow down her favourite place as every where she has been has offered something different, from the wildlife and beauty of Africa to the culture and markets of Asia. “One of my latest trips was to the beautiful Alaska, an absolutely stunning destination with some amazing scenery and wildlife. Watching bears fishing for salmon and being surrounded by 15 humpback whales listening to them breathe are two of my favourite memories”Carmel specialises in Pacific Island weddings so if your dream is to be married on a beautiful beach with a frangipani bouquet then please talk to her about the options. She’d love to pass on her knowledge and experiences to make your great holiday an even better one.
