Supermarket gets go ahead Simon Bloomberg Residents on Bateup Rd and Paramu Pl are “surprised” that Foodstuffs South Island has been granted a resource consent to build a New World supermarket at Three Brothers Corner near Richmond without any public notification. The Tasman District Council approved the resource consent last Thursday following a lengthy process that started when Foodstuffs purchased the former Bay Nursery site in 2007. Although the 1.64 hectare site has frontages adjoining Gladstone Rd and residential areas on Bateup Rd and Paramu Pl, the public will not be consulted. The council’s manager of environment and planning, Dennis Bush-King, says the proposal for the supermarket is “broadly in line” with plans that were approved by council last year. He says the effect of any changes to the plans are considered to be minor so the application has been processed without notification.

“The water supply to those properties will need to be shut off for a short period of time. The letter will include details of the timing, what’s involved in the meter replacement, and who to contact if people have any questions.”

“The Marlborough Wine and Food event, I’m from there and all my friends are there. Used to go there every year, great range of food and music.”

Luke Berkett, Redwoods Valley. “I don’t really go to many. I’ve been to the Nelson Market, that’s pretty good. Good variety they’ve got there and the people that are around.”

However, Bateup Rd resident Grant Irvine disagrees saying he “can’t see how the main entrance to the New World won’t have a major impact on nearby residents”. “The majority of people who live in the area have seen a big increase in traffic over the last few years,” Grant says. “If you throw in a supermarket that is only 90 metres from a major roundabout then you are going to have problems.” The resource consent includes a number of conditions to improve traffic flow, including Foodstuffs contributing $44,900 towards a right-turn bay on Bateup Rd leading into the supermarket. Council is also planning to widen the section of Bateup Rd from Three Brothers Corner to Collins Rd. Although the residents made submissions on the roading issues

during the earlier plan-change process, they were informed that those issues would be part of the resource consent process. But Grant says a non-notifiable resource consent means that won’t happen, leaving the Bateup Rd residents frustrated and angry. “We submitted that a lot of our concerns were about the roading issues and were told that would come later. Now we find out we won’t get a chance to have any input - it’s a very surprising ruling,” he says. Paramu Pl resident Ian Paterson, who was chair of a residents’ group that made submissions on the plans, and Richmond councillor Judene Edgar, say they are also surprised that council approved a non-notified resource consent. Ian says he will be meeting with residents this week to “see what course of action we can take.” The consent is for a 4000 square

metre supermarket and two smaller retail tenancies with a total area of no greater than 400 square metres. It includes a number of conditions, including limiting the supermarket’s opening hours to 7am to 10m, seven days a week. Semi-trailer deliveries will also be restricted to 7am to 10pm on weekdays and 9am to 8pm on weekends and holidays and the Bateup Rd access can’t be used for deliveries. The loading bay doors must remain closed between 10pm and 7am with no outdoor forklift activity during these hours and all exterior lighting must also be directed away from adjoining residential properties. Food Stuffs’ Roger Davidson says they haven’t decided on a start date for construction. He says they will be looking at a time frame for starting the development over the next “two to three months”.

Finally, a cracker day for Snapper Classic While some may have had trouble getting the fish to bite, others struggled to keep their boat above water during this year’s Tasman Bay Snapper Classic. The competition kicked off early on Saturday morning but for Daz Hunter, Roger Colville, Tim Colville and Hanz Walzl fishing was temporarily delayed after their boat, Break Free, lived up to its name in the most inconvenient way. “We were down at the ramp at 3:45am and had already put the boat in the night before,” says skipper Roger. “We started the motor up on the marina berth and it was running and I had a wee prob-

lem with the tilt. I went down the back, lifted the motor cover and could hear water gushing inside. I got a torch, had a look and the exhaust had broken off and there was a four inch hole in the boat.” By the time they had dashed back to get the trailer, which was locked in the compound, the eight metre-long vessel was just two minutes away from sinking. “We took it out of the water at about 4am and my son’s a welder, so he took it down to his workshop, welded it up and we were out on the water about an hour and a half later,” says Roger. “We were really, really lucky. If it had broken out there, the bilge pump wouldn’t have kept up and we would have been in

the water in our life jackets,” In the end, the team caught every other species apart from snapper but say the trip was still a “brilliant day out”. This year the fishing competition saw 240 entrants take part, Geoff Caradus winning the heaviest snapper title with a monster weighing in at 11.22kg, while Jeff Holden took home the $14,000 DNA Boat and Honda Marine 4 Stroke outboard with Simrad Electronics for hooking the exact average weight snapper, at 2.07kg. The winners of the nelson live.co.nz photo competition were Jacques Le Grange, Tim Hemelryk and Dan Govier. Money raised for Coastguard has not yet been totalled.

Popular policeman changes jobs Simon Bloomberg One of Richmond’s best known policemen may have left the force after 38 years but he will still be helping out people in the community, or at least older ones, in his new role with Age Concern. Mal Drummond retired from the police earlier this year, ending a lengthy career that started as a 19-year-old on the beat in Wellington in 1978. Although many people may have been surprised that Mal decided to leave the force, he says what’s actually surprising is that he lasted that long. “When I left school, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do although I had no real desire to become a policeman,” Mal recalls. “But I had a friend who had joined the year before and he enjoyed it so I thought I’d give that a go for a couple of years - I had no intention of making a career of it.” But Mal soon changed his mind about policing, deciding to make it a life-long career after his first “eye-opening” posting in Wellington Central. “After a year’s training at Trentham, we were told we had four choices where we wanted to go and we had to list them in or-

der of preference. I remember the sergeant at the police college got up and said ‘your choices are Wellington, Auckland, Wellington or Auckland’ so I ended up in Wellington. “I was 19 when I graduated and it was a real eye-opener for someone from Richmond to suddenly to be on Cuba St with all the night life and interesting people that were around at the time. I clearly remember (flamboyant drag queen) Carmen - she would come out of her strip club at two or three in the morning with her big hair and big boobs and say “come in dear and have a cup of tea and get warm”. ‘We’d go in for a cup of tea right by the stage where all the transvestites and strippers were and then go back out again. She was a great person and it was a really cool time.” Although all the new recruits had to do the hard yards on the beat, Mal says it was character-building and enjoyable, and ultimately made him a better policeman. “When I started, you were given a 12 inch piece of wood and handcuffs and that was it. You had to rely on your negotiation skills a lot of the time but we still got into some pretty tight situations.

Mal Drummond and Sue Tilby outside the Age Concern office in Richmond last Wednesday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. “We spent the first six months walking the streets which could be pretty bleak in Wellington’s wind and rain. My beat was Beat 5 which was around Vivian Cuba, Taranaki and Courtney Place and all those little streets so I’d patrol around there all on foot - If you were lucky you’d get to ride in an I-car (incident car) on a Sunday.” After six years in Wellington Central, Mal transferred to Blenheim and then to Wakefield where he was based for nine years with Pete Carmody before moving into Richmond. Mal says working with Pete in Wakefield “was a real highlight because the whole

IRRIGATION We deliver a total water solution package for rural properties.

community was fantastic and we got some good results”. Another highlight was a sevenmonth posting to Timor-Leste working with the UN in a policing role in a remote provincial centre called Suai. “It was very rewarding living and working in a third world country and seeing how people just got on with their lives despite all the poverty and terrible conditions.” . When Mal transferred to Richmond, he became involved in community policing and youth aid which led to his appointment as family violence coordinator for Nelson Bays. It was the first

time that position had been created which Mal says reflected the changing attitudes towards domestic violence in the police and the wider community. After 38 years in the police, Mal says “the time was right to move on.” He had “been looking around” for a new challenge and when the job came up at Age Concern he decided to apply. “I had a lot of great times with a lot of great people in the police. There are some really dedicated, hardworking and conscientious cops out here and working with them has been a highlight.” Age Concern manager Sue Tilby says Mal’s background was “obviously one of the reasons” he was employed. Although Mal says “dealing with situations where people are struggling” is nothing new, he admits he is saddened that so many people who should be enjoying their twilight years are suffering from abuse and neglect. “We are an ageing community and we are all going to be old one day and we all need to be treated with respect and be able to enjoy those later years. If I can make one older person’s life a little more comfortable then I have done my job.”

Ant plan needs community support, Wednesday, February, 24: Since this article was published in the Waimea Weekly, project coordinator Andrew Goldsworthy says they have had considerable interest in the project with the Tahunanui Community centre being “overwhelmed” with calls. “Lots of people in Richmond and Nelson have complained about the problems these ants are now giving them as they are spreading so fast,” he says. In order to share their methodology and the recipe, they are making a short video and will be publishing the information on a website nelsonants.nz that they are currently creating. Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards, Wednesday, March 9: After an article in the Waimea Weekly, the Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards is starting to see its first entries roll in. The awards were set up to thank local voluntary groups and the work they contribute to the community. People have until 5pm on Friday, April 29, to get entries in for this year’s awards. Entry forms are available from council offices or service centres or they can be completed online at www.trustpower. co.nz/communityawards. Jake Robinson fundraising concert, Wednesday, March 9: Jake Robinson and a number of other performing arts groups took to the stage on Saturday for Jake’s fundraising concert, ‘With a little help from my friends’. The show was organised by Jake in order to help raise some of the $50,000 he needed to get to London to join the Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ Young Shakespeare Company and study at the prestigious London School of Musical Theatre. The concert, along with raffles, raised $1700.

your questions

Q: What happens to debt

when you separate? A: While there can be exceptions; the general rule is that after a relationship of 3 years or more, both assets and debts are split 50/50. A debt can be a relationship debt without both partners being aware of it. The Property (Relationships) Act defines relationship debts as:  Those incurred jointly (eg, a joint hire purchase).  Those incurred in the course of a common enterprise (eg, a business that benefits both parties).  Debts incurred to acquire, improve or maintain relationship property (eg, a loan to renovate a house).  Those incurred to manage the affairs of the household (eg, purchases of household items, holidays, car, etc)  Those incurred for the purpose of bringing up a child of the relationship.  In contrast, personal debts are those incurred to acquire or improve separate property or those incurred before the relationship began or after it ended. Even debt in one partner’s name can be relationship debt if it was incurred for the reason’s mentioned above. If you are separating from your partner it is important seek good legal advice. End of summer not all NEWS bad news for fare-goers

The bad news is that it's the end of summer. The good news is that means it's time for the Sprig & Fern Harvest Fare to be held in Sundial Square in Richmond this Friday. The annual fare celebrates the autumn harvest and features some of the Sprig & Fern's finest beers and some of the region's top wines, all made from hops and grapes harvested in Tasman. Add some excellent music from the Dixie Prix and a feast of food stalls, and you have the recipe for a great night out. "It's always the last hurrah for summer and an opportunity to get out with friends and family and enjoy the evening," one of the organisers, Kim Quint of Richmond Unlimited, says. "There's always a really nice, relaxed atmosphere and I think that's why people keep coming back." Friday night is the start of a big weekend for sponsors Sprig & Fern, which will have to back up for Marchfest at Founders on Saturday.

OPEN MORNING Thursday 31 March 9am ALL WELCOME 03 548 2194 | www.ncg.school.nz | Head Teacher: Lucy Feltham

Jessie Johnston Thrills, spills and friendly rivalry made for a successful day at the Mike Pero Trolley Derby on Saturday. A record 92 trolleys entered into this year’s event which, as usual, took place on Nelson’s Collingwood St, showcasing some top notch ingenuity by locals both young and adult. Racing incorporated a number of sections, including the Zoomers’ class, comprising

drivers from five to 10 years, followed by the Sprinters from 11 years and the Rockets from 16 years. While the corporate trolleys made a great spectacle, the main event was the Monarch of the Hill, which was taken out this year by Nitrofish, driven by Jack Lovell who reached a speed of 70.8 kmph. Luca Masters and trolley Doodlebug took out first place in the Zoomers section, Hyper Drive driven by Jasmine Dacombe won the Sprinters class,

Steve Lovell and Kiwiana won the Rockets section and major sponsor Mike Pero was the champion of the corporates. As well as being a popular day out for drivers and spectators, the Mike Pero Trolley Derby also helped raise vital funds for local charitable group Big Brothers, Big Sisters, who require volunteers and funds to mentor young people within schools and the community. watch the video:

e l p o e p d o o f h s e Y ou r f r Judene Edgar, fourth from right, with the Habitat For Humanity volunteers working in Nepal.

Councillor does hard labour in Nepal Simon Bloomberg Richmond councillor Judene Edgar returned from three-weeks of hard labour helping rebuild a small settlement in Nepal, amazed at the resilience and optimism of the people following last year’s devastating earthquake. Judene joined a team of 16 volunteers, mostly from the United States, as part of Habitat for Humanity’s Global Villages project in Nepal. The group travelled to a small farming community in the Panchkhal Valley where all 93 homes had been destroyed in the April 25 earthquake that killed more than 8000 people and injured another 22,300. Although the devastation was overwhelming, Judene says the people living in the shanty town amongst the ruins of Panchkhal Valley retained a positive outlook. “The thing that got me the most was how it was business as usual. The settlement was badly damaged and they were living in shanties and yet life was carrying on. “They were all just getting in there and salvaging materials to rebuild their homes. And everyone was so happy with this amazing attitude.” “I was especially impressed with the

Nepalese women. They really knew how to work hard - they could outlift, out-carry, out-build any of us.” Habitat For Humanity plans to rebuild 87 houses in the settlement and Judene’s group was assigned the task of starting construction on four houses. Another group of volunteers was scheduled to arrive in Panchkhal Valley and continue the work after Judene’s group left last week. Judene was employed as labourer, wheelbarrowing bricks, sand and cement up to the construction site, digging foundations and crushing rocks for base material. “It was a steep site so it was hard work but it was very satisfying. There’s nothing like doing good physical labour for a good cause.” Judene also enjoyed getting to know the Nepalese families and was invited to an arranged wedding that was a “fun and colourful occasion” and visited a local primary school to donate stationary, balls and colouring pencils. The volunteers had also paid for all their travel and expenses and donated materials for the rebuild. “If I could do more of this sort of thing I’d do it in a heartbeat but I also have a young family to look after and they are a priority.”

Your Voice Gangs arrive in Nelson: It's bad when they are trying to recruit young kids into gang life. I wonder how many more young kids will be bashed as a result of gang initiation? It's happing here in Nelson.. get them out! Frances Minogue. Why would you glorify a bunch of P peddling, violent gangsters! They may do a run for charity, but the harm they cause is WAY bigger than what they ‘give’.... Not worthy of any publicity whatsoever! Jen Branje. Police collect 9000 cannabis plants in annual sting: Maybe they should sweep for the crack homes in and around Nelson. Christine Puha-Mikaere. What a waste of money. New supermarket for Richmond: All accounts they are looking to the future as is BP on the corner of Queen Street and Oxford Street. If it’s a Countdown then yes, for sure, as I live in Wakefield so less distance to travel! Can’t stand Pak ‘n’ Save or New World. Alison Holmes. Yay, I’m pretty happy about this! Currently online shopping with Countdown but this will be literally across the road and I love New World supermarkets. Hannah-Dan Sangster. New flag: We did not get to vote for the flag of our choice, a committee decided which four flags we could vote on, and 50 per cent of those were by the same designer, another flag was simply added to the list later. What sort of country are we that puts the flag of another country on our flag, and that flag itself is flawed. Nothing satisfies the soul more than fresh woodfired pizza with a cold glass of craft beer, which is exactly what Eddyline Brewery & Pizzeria have brought to Richmond. The opening of their new venture on Champion Rd has had locals’ mouths watering for months as the premises was set up, and for just over three weeks, owners Mic and Molley Heynekamp have been serving up a winning formula to their customers. While Mic’s passion for beer started as a home brewing hobby back at university, the pair has been commercially brewing since 1999 when they founded their first business, Socorro Springs Brewing Company in New Mexico. “We wanted a business that we could run in a small town where there’s an enjoyable lifestyle, I wanted a lifestyle, not a career,” says Mic. In 2009 Mic and Molley created Eddyline Brewery in Buena Vista, Colorado, the name originating from its close proximity to a popular white water rafting area where the business provided a resting place for rafters and kayakers. In the ten years between the creation of both businesses, Mic and Molley never took a vacation and decided they deserved a break, so with their three children in tow, they made the journey to New Zealand and “just loved the people and loved the culture.” “We decided we wanted our children to be able to grow up here and felt that it was a fit with our vision of Eddyline - just being a gathering place in an area with a real community and real adventures to be had,” says Mic.

The menu is 100 per cent gourmet comfort food, with a wood fired oven doing all the cooking and dishes such as pizza, calzone and lasagna gracing customer’s plates. Mic and Molley say they aren’t trying to be the next modern, funky restaurant, or a high end white table cloth establishment, their main priority is creating a welcoming, friendly atmosphere where people can spend time with friends and family. The pair has also incorporated that sense of comfort into the interior of their restaurant, with tables and the front of the bar all handmade from locally sourced wood, the smell of wood-fire pizzas wafting over diners and large windows into the micro-brewery reminding customers their beer was carefully brewed on site. While their selection of beers will include some of Eddyline’s core creations from the States, such as CrankYanker IPA, Kickin’ Back Amber and Jolly Roger Black Lager, the brewery has also created some products inspired by the Nelson Tasman region such as the Low Tide Pale Ale, Pozzy Pale Ale, Tahunanui Light Pilsner and Kaiteriteri Gold Pilsner. These beers are crafted from mainly New Zealand hops and New Zealand malts. The aim for Eddyline Brewery & Pizzeria is to have 10 beers on tap - five or six of them permanent brews that have proven to be favourites with their customers, while the remaining beers will be rotated so people can try out Mic and Molley’s new inventions. The same local inspiration has gone into their pizzas with several of them named after places

Car Breakfasts The Nelson Petrol Head breakfast is soon to see its fifth edition this April, combining a delicious breakfast buffet with classic cars of all shapes and sizes. The New Zealand Petrolhead magazine is a free publication that comes out every month for car enthusiasts and they have started a trend in the North Island that sees like minded people get together on the first Sunday of every month for a breakfast and the opportunity to get their pride and joy out of the garage. The initiative has continued to grow in the North Island until organisers came looking for a suitable venue to host a breakfast in Nelson. Phil Hazeldine, owner of Phil’s Place at Club Waimea, put his hand up and suggested the club as the perfect spot. Although the breakfast has only seen four meetings, it’s already had a fantastic response from car owners locally and around the country. Out of town car owners who follow

the magazine simply need to check its pages to find the nearest meeting wherever they are in the country and when they arrive at Club Waimea, Phil will be serving up a $20 buffet breakfast with special prices for kids. At one stage the breakfast saw around 70 cars parked up while Phil and his team have catered to around 90 breakfasts. “For me it’s like a dream to look out the [kitchen] window and look at all these nice cars,” says Phil. Whether you own a hot rod, a Rolls Royce or a Mini, everything is welcome, the only requirement is that they are not of Japanese make. Even if you don’t have a car but want to admire some stunning vehicles, Phil welcomes you to enjoy breakfast while you chat with fellow car lovers. Phil’s Place is open for breakfast from 8:30am until 10:30am, with the Nelson Petrolhead Breakfast on rain, hail or shine.

Members of the Sioux Line Dance section at their practice in the Club hall on Wednesday evening.

Social dance and workshop One lucky audience member got the chance to perform a song with Brendan during the concert.

Brendan Dugan Concert Kiwi country music icon, Brendan Dugan, along with fellow country musician Tony Wellington, put on a fantastic show at Club Waimea on February 19. The concert drew a full house of country fans, who came to hear the classic songs of both Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison and even joined in the singing themselves. Club Waimea’s functions manager Jan Phipps was thrilled with how

event turned out and was proud to have been a part of presenting the show to club members and the public. With plenty of banter flying between the pair, the night drew plenty of laughs from the audience as well as applause, and even included a duet between Brendan and an audience member. Club Waimea is now looking forward to hosting similarly memorable events in the future.

From the presidents desk A big welcome to Ceri Worts, our new bar manager who comes to our club with a wealth of club experience. Ceri is also a very experienced pool player having won many national titles and has also represented New Zealand. Club Waimea is on a roll with sports winners, congratulations to Jean McKenzie and Lyn McCausland on winning the Nelson Centre outdoor bowls pairs and also congratulations to John Allan on winning Nelson Centre Veterans champion of champions singles title. We should be very proud of our sports groups as they keep our clubs name to the fore which can only a benefit to Club Waimea. Well done to the outdoor bowls section on another successful

Tuesday night business bowls season, and I’m told there are no spare spaces for next season. The club is moving forward with new members, however we still need your support, Monday to Sunday inclusive, patronage is important to your clubs success. The Brendan Dugan show was an absolute success with 230 tickets sold. Many thanks to operations manager Jan Phipps for negotiating and overseeing the show, and to the volunteers that assisted with the show. Our conference rooms are being used to capacity and the caravan park has been nearly full every week. Kindest regards, David J Birdling President

Next week’s Members Draw is $1,200

The Sioux Line Dancing section will be making the most of Club Waimea’s facilities when they host their social dance and workshop weekend at the beginning of April. The three day event will kick off on Friday, April 1, with a social dance evening at the club’s hall, allowing participants the chance to have a meet and greet. Already the event has attracted around 150 registrations, with people coming from north of Auckland, Dunedin and everywhere in between. On Saturday afternoon dancers will take part in the main event, a line dance workshop, led by world renowned Australian choreographer, Jan

Wyllie. The line dance pieces that Jan will be teaching during the workshop will go back with participants to their clubs, offering more variety to their regular gatherings. Saturday evening will see another opportunity for social dancing before the weekend comes to a close on Sunday morning. If anyone is interested in joining in the Sioux Line Dance section, which meets once a week at Club Waimea, they are welcome to come along and watch both the social dancing and the workshop to get a better understanding of what’s involved. For more information on the section, give Sue Wilson a call on 528 6788.

Tineli team triathlon fast and furious Simon Bloomberg

Hayden Squance, Wayne Leighton and Jon Linyard had a high-speed hit-out for upcoming national champs when they competed in the Tineli Team Triathlon at Rabbit Island on Sunday. Hayden and Jon teamed up with Matt Newberry to win the event that required each team member to swim 250m, cycle 6km and run 2km before tagging a team-mate and sending them off on the next leg of the relay. Team Sitting on 99 finished in 1hr 28min 10sec with Hayden recording the fastest time of the day, finishing in 26min 33sec. Hayden heads to Gisborne for the Oceania Junior triathlon sprint champs this weekend while Jon is preparing for Xterra Rotorua on April 16. Wayne Leighton, who teamed-up with Mandy Medcalf-Stephens and PJ Stephens to finish sixth, is also heading to Rotorua for Xterra. Alan Bryson, who teamed up with Neil Green and Eileen Searle in the cleverly named A n E team to finish second and win the mixed category in 1hr 41min 3sec, is also training for a big race with Ironman Australia on May 1 as his target. Alan had a busy day on Sunday, double-teaming with Thomas Heaton and Emma Charles in Team CAB to finish fourth. A nationally-ranked swimmer, Thomas showed he also could be a pretty useful triathlete, recording the day's second-fastest leg of 29min 24sec. Thomas made a big impression earlier in the week when he won the senior boys race at the secondary school's Andrew Jones Memorial Triathlon at Rabbit Island. Garin College's Olivia Wilbourne, Sophia Kersten and Hannah Price won the female section, while Carolyn Squance, Peter Gibbs and Rob Rix won the senior section for teams with a combined age of 170-plus. At the other end of the demographic, Team RWCA's Nic Hall, Gianni Pessione and Oxford Bayley won the junior category. Thirty-one teams and 92 athletes competed in the event sponsored by Tineli and Kiwi Multisport.

The Waimea Swimming Club completed a successful season under the guidance of coaching legend Jos Pattison when it held its club championships at the Waimea College pool on Saturday. About 50 swimmers lined up for Saturday’s champs with the club’s star performers showing why they had won so many medals during the season. Club president Sue Malthus says the club champs capped a great year for the club which featured excellent performances at the two big country meets. Waimea was the top club for the third consecutive year at the Nelson Marlborough Country and Town champs in Nelson on January 9 and dominated the

South Island Country and Town champs in Ashburton on February 27-28. “Our results at the two Country and Town meets were excellent,” Sue says. “We sent our biggest contingent of swimmers ever to Ashburton and did very well there - it was a real highlight.” Nick Lovell won seven events and recorded four personal best times in Nelson and backed that up with four golds at Ashburton. Tayla Graham, 16, and Nathan Limmer, 18, also won their age groups in Nelson while Nathan won the 100m breaststroke, Cody Pike, 14, won the the 100m and 200m breaststroke and Emma Lovell, 15, won the 100m and 200m freestyle at Ashburton. Sue says the club’s successful season can be attributed to

good coaching backed up by a hard-working committee. All the club’s coaches and committee are volunteers and Sue says they all do a great job. “It’s all about coaching in my view,” Sue says. “Jos is a legend and he’s made a massive difference to our club. “We also have a very effective committee with parents who are always ready to step up. We are totally run by volunteers which is a big ask these days.” Sue also paid tribute to the rest of the coaching team including Michelle Cooper who is stepping down after 15 seasons with the club. Shirley Hollis and David and Andrew McKay are the other coaches. Bradley Limmer won the Stanley Cup for the fastest swimmer over 100m at Saturday’s meet.
