Heat transfer systems recalled after causing fires The Nelson Fire Service has joined Energy Safety in warning consumers who have purchased some models of Weiss Heat Transfer Units.

652 and FV 653. Craig Piner from the Nelson Fire Service says the units operate in ceiling spaces and over air through ducts to heat houses.

Locals in Pride of NZ finals Andrew Board Six Nelsonians have been named as finalists in the South Island section of the Pride of New Zealand awards.

Kyle Paki Paki, Philip Walker, Adam Black and Gary Miller were selected as finalists in the bravery and heroism category for their rescue of the Fa’ave family in July last year. Ian Price will battle two others for the Environment award, and

Tama Easton and Mark Janssen make up two of the three finalists in the fundraiser of the year category.

The awards have been running over the past two months, searching for the country’s most inspiring stories.

In Nelson, more than 20 people were nominated, with six making it to the South Island finals in Christchurch on August 7.

The South Island winners of each category will then go to

the national finals in Auckland in early September, meeting winners of the three regions in the North Island.

Kyle Paki Paki says he was “absolutely humbled” when he found out he had made the finals. He says he will be taking his mum with him to the dinner. “Mum was the first person I opened up to after the accident, so she knows what I’ve been through and she was the first person I thought of.”

This Friday night at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms in Richmond, Mike Corkill and his six children will be hoping to crown a new “world champion”.

The tongue-in-cheek title of the quiz was penned by Mike’s kids, who are hoping it will go a long way to helping Mike reach his $100,000 fundraising goal for a new pair of lungs. So far the family has raised more than $20,000 for the operation, which he needs to have to live.

The operation isn’t funded by the government because Mike has a small chance of kidney failure after the operation. But if it’s successful, then Mike will be able to live for years and

Dog care services around the Tasman district are booming, as the owners get busier and the dogs become hairier and more pampered.

Twenty years ago there was just food (usually a can of Fido), vet's bills and registration, but today dog owners are also spending money dog groomers, walkers, trainers, whisperers, toys, clothing and expensive speciality health foods. The New Zealand Companion Animal Council estimates that the country's dog owners spend an average of $1047 each year on their dogs, and that amount doesn't surprise Richmond vet Brenda Halliwell. "Everyone is busier rushing around after children and working, and they still want the fun of having a pet," Brenda says. "So what's happening is that they are paying people to groom and walk their dogs so they don't feel guilty about not doing it themselves."

Brenda, who works for Town and Country Vet, says there's also been an increase in dog breeds that don't shed hair and that's increased the demand for dog groomers.

"There are lots of smaller, fluffier crosses out there now and they need grooming. We call them oodles- they're the poodle and bichon frise and shih tzu crosses."

One of Richmond's newest dog groomers, Lauryce Colvill, who operates the Hole Diggers Dog Spa, says she started off her business part-time in March last year, but went full-time in November because she couldn't keep up with

the demand.

Now she grooms up to 20 dogs a week during the peak season in summer, usually taking two hours and charging around $60 for each dog. Lauryce says she provides the full range of grooming, including washing, removing matted hair, clipping, nail and teeth care and even nail art.

Although many of her clients have dog breeds that need regular trimming and coat care, like border collies and spaniels, the majority are dog owners who simply enjoy pampering their best friend.

"They love their dogs and like to pamper them. Their dogs are just as important to them as people."

Dog owner David Macdonald says he brings his border collie, Sophie, into Lauryce every three or four months for a groom and for a clipping in summer. "We love Sophie and we like to give her all the best care," David says. "And we can see she gets looked after here - you can see that Lauryce loves them too."

And according to veteran animal control officer John Bergman, David is typical of Tasman's 6500 dogs owners who give the the vast majority of the district's 10,300 dogs the best of care. "We are spoiled in this area. People in Tasman look after their dogs really well.

"We talk to dog control officers around the country and in a lot of places they won't go onto a property alone - it's too dangerous. We do see the bad ones here, but not many of them."

TDC to fix ‘poorly designed’ roads One of the Tasman district’s deadliest corners is being realigned while improving two black spots on Lower Queen St and controlling pedestrian crossings on Salisbury Rd are on a list of other minor roading improvements projects being investigated by the council.

A left-hand corner on Kerr’s Hill in Golden Downs is being realigned after two fatal motorcycle crashes in the last four years.

The council’s transportation manager Gary Clark, says a combination of misleading “horizontal and vertical” curves was identified as a factor in both fatalities and contractors Higgins are presently rea-

Gary says the corner was poorly designed because it had “a curve and then a straight and then a tighter curve going downhill”.

That sometimes resulted in motorcyclists going into the second corner too fast and crossing the centre line - both fatalities happened when motorcycles collided head-on with cars. The realignment is expected to be finished in about three weeks.

The council has also commissioned designs for two intersections on Lower Queen St which carries 7000 cars a day and is the district’s second busiest road.

designs will increase the sighting distance of drivers at the White’s and Ranzau roads intersections and council has already started negotiations for purchasing the land for the improvements at Ranzau Rd. A signalised pedestrian crossing on Salisbury Rd near Waimea College and traffic lights at the William St intersection are also on the council’s minor roading improvements wish-list. Gary says Salisbury Rd is “by far” the district’s busiest road with 18,000 cars a day and with a cluster of five schools between William St and Arbor-Lea Ave, they need to improve its traffic flows and pedestrian safety.

A man died after being hit by a passing car on the Moutere Highway Sunday night.

The 40 year old’s small van was parked at the side of the road when he was hit by a passing vehicle and killed. The driver of that vehicle was uninjured and is receiving victim support.

Police would like to speak to a motorist who exited Redwood Valley Rd, heading towards Richmond, about 6.20pm and drove through the crash scene. Anyone with information should contact Nelson Police on 546 3840.

The Nelson Tramping Club will be looking back to when its members wore hob-nailed boots and oil skins and carried heavy canvas packs when they celebrate the club’s 80th anniversary at St Arnaud next weekend.

About 40 of the club’s past and present members will be attending the anniversary at the Alpine Lodge and Lake Rotoiti Community Hall on Saturday and Sunday. Club secretary Pat Holland says they will be holding a dinner at the Lodge on Saturday as well as slide shows and displays covering the club’s history.

“Some of the slides and photos are really interesting,” Pat says.

“They give a good insight into the club’s history.

“The members were hardier back then because they had to be. The carried heavier packs everything is lightweight now - and when they went up to Mt Arthur they would have to walk up from the Graham Valley because the access road wasn’t there then. “The club also built a number of huts around the district. They built the original Rocks Hut but that’s been replaced now.”

Pat says 40 trampers went on the club’s first official trip along the Dun Line and around Mt Jenkins in June 1934. The first overnight trip during August 1934 was to Mt Arthur - the

The club has a membership of 110 and plans two trips a week generally ranging from beach strolls to alpine expeditions.

Tama nominated for inspiring rides

Nelson mountainbiking enthusiast Tama Easton’s passion for long distance rides and a desire to help people suffering from arthritis has led to a nomination for the Pride of New Zealand’s Fundraiser of the Year Award.

The former editor of Spoke mountainbiking magazine loves nothing more than getting on his bike, but last weekend Tama went for his first ride since April and could only manage a snail-paced two kilometres in 15 minutes.

That’s a far cry from 2007 when he and a friend decided to ride around the Port Hills in Christchurch from sunrise to sunset on the longest day of the year.

The Longest Day Ride is now a popular event for mountainbikers throughout the country but, sadly, Tama has missed three of them after being diagnosed with arthritis in 2009.

The following year, Tama was well enough to ride again and decided that the 2010 edition of The Longest Day Ride would be a fundraiser for Arthritis New Zealand. The ride is now in its fourth year and has raised over $15,000 for the charity, which represents 535,000 sufferers of the 140 forms of arthritis.

“I was crippled in 2009, so I missed it that year and said ‘When I’m better I’m going to

When he rode the Longest Day Ride around the Richmond Ranges with David Bonnet in 2010, Tama says it was a way of recapturing his identity because mountainbiking was such a big part of his life.

“Not riding, for me, is like not eating – but I’m eyeing up the coming summer and thinking, ‘well maybe I’ll ride…’”

Tama crashed out of the 2011 Longest Day Ride on a tricky section of the Wakamarina track, but rode around the route for the Tasman Great Taste Trail in 2012 and from Hanmer Springs to St Arnaud last year.

But soon after that ride Tama

started going downhill and was later diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a chronic inflammation of the spine and pelvis. His condition is being treated with the drug Humira, which binds to inflammatory cells and “takes them out of action”, but he still suffers from chronic pain and fatigue.

Tama, who works as a web architect for Upshift Communications based in Richmond, says most people don’t realise that half of arthritis sufferers are under 65 – but now he’s got the conversation started.

Whether he’s there to lead them or not, 100 people will be there in December on the Longest Day, sponsored to ride sunrise to sunset to ease others’ suffering.

Lighting up Nelson Light Nelson exceeded all of its organisers’ expectations this year, with 40,000 people visiting over the two nights.

With Friday night’s event called off due to rain, most people waited until Sunday to attend Light Nelson, with 30,000 people coming through the

Queens Gardens and surrounds on the final night.

Light Nelson featured 40 installations from local and national artists, and in its second year organisers were just hoping to top the crowd of 16,000 from last year, but ended up with much, much more than that.

New trust walks the talk

A local charity that ensures no student walks to school without shoes is taking big strides – and it’s thanks to the generosity of the community.

Walk With Us, a charity set up early last year by eight Nelson businesswomen, helps fund school shoes, sport shoes and socks for local kids whose families are in need of some financial support.

Walk With Us raised $15,000 at a charity auction at the end of October last year, which enabled them to start accepting application forms and get the ball rolling.

President Carol Shirley says they were “really excited” with the response from the auction held at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms, and the trust was now busy working with its six pilot schools to get shoes on the feet of students who are in need. “We had been told that some students were coming to school with bare feet or wet shoes. There is a big need out there and we keep being told it’s just getting harder and harder financially,” she says.

“One of the ladies had been a teacher and she brought it home that the financial cost is quite significant for some parents, so we thought, why don’t we do shoes for children.”

The way the process works is that schools will identify when there is a need and an application form will be sent to the charity. If approved, a voucher goes out to the parents, and they then go to sponsors Stirling Sport and Number One

Shoe Warehouse to pick out a pair of footwear. “It all goes through the schools, the teacher often sees the need and contacts the parent. We are quite specific about what they get, they are proper school shoes and proper sports shoes.”

She says there has been a “good steady flow” of applicants coming through so far, and the charity would look at growing following its next charity auction later in the year.

New trust to help unwanted horses

Went last night, had a great time! I enjoyed the flow, that you could go where you liked etc at your own pace... I think some of the paths could have been illuminated a bit better though, and maybe some people encouraging the crowd to move? Me and my toddler were trying to get a glimpse of something while standing behind two women gasbagging about their great-aunt. We waited ages and they wouldn’t move from the front row, so we went to look at something else.

Use MTA Good Guys created for their members is what sets MTA members apart from others in the same field and can mean a weight off your shoulders when it comes to finding a business you can trust.

The MTA is governed by a board of directors who meet regularly and the MTA council comprises the board, branch presidents and committee chairs. Wendy Peterson has been recently elected as the MTA President for Nelson after being involved with the Nelson branch committee for around seven years.

The Nelson executive is a small group of around six people who work together to organise training and opportunities for the membership in the region. Her role as president will also see her attend meetings with other MTA execu-

tives and represent Nelson nationally. “I guess it was the next step for me. I took it as a challenge for me and the chance for some personal development,” says Wendy. “I also enjoy getting a better insight into the workings of the MTA which only an executive position can offer.” Wendy and her husband have been a part of the MTA ever since they took over Wakefield Auto Services and believe in the benefits of the organisation for them as owners as well as the public. So they were given a challenge to make a raft or boat for their gingerbread man, who was being chased and had to get across the river to the other side. Tasman District Library Book Quiz

By Arin and Sarah (Year 5) Recently, a team of four students from Wakefield School took part in the Tasman District Library book quiz. The team of four [Sarah, Arin, Blake and Gian] carefully studied three books, Project Huia, Dunger

and Anzac Day. The team called themselves the Wakefield Hunters. They were all dressed in camo gear and you could hardly recognize them. There were 10 other teams participating from Lake Rotoiti School to Richmond School.

The first round of questions was on the book Dunger and was brainstretchingly hard. The next two rounds were equally as hard. The last round was on general knowledge of popular books.

When the quiz was over, everyone sat there holding their breath, waiting for the name of the winning team to be called. Wakefield was surprised and delighted to hear that they had won for the second year in a row.

Art expo the ‘finest yet’ The third annual Art Expo Nelson brought some of the best artisans out into one space, and the public responded by turning out in their thousands.

Project manager Nic Foster says the quality of the work continues to reach new highs, and local attendee Maxine McNabb, agrees.

“The talent has risen every year.”

From etchings to oils, and sculpture to fabrics, the different mediums made for an eclectic col-

lection of the stunning talents.

Contributor Jeff Connell says he tries to portray creativity when working on a new piece. “[I’m] always looking at light and landscape to have convincing spaces… a painting you can look into and, in your mind’s eye, move around inside it.”

And as part of her creative process, Nelson artist Ruth Vaega says she spent hours observing a robin for one of her etchings.

Other parents will thank you and can do the same for their child. Forgo the elaborate goodie bags- a piece of cake wrapped in a serviette is a nice treat to take home. Birthday parties are not a competitive event; don’t buy into the idea of ‘keeping up with the Joneses’. Truth be told the ‘Joneses’ probably can’t afford everything either.

Your different approach to parties may well start a new trend with the other parents!

Someone said they didn’t think they’d invite Jesus to dinner. You never know what he’d say or do. Jesus is very blunt to those who needed some straight talk; the bullies, the self-righteous, the smart alec know-it-alls. Jesus has no idea what it is to be PC. Jesus thrives on bringing discomfort. (Jesus is always very kind to the vulnerable; to those in trouble though.)

I’m slowly learning that discomfort is a good thing. It alerts us to the growing edge; to the places of challenge and potential. Wanna grow? Easy. Don’t run from discomfort. Embrace it.

Commonwealth Games draw closer A record contingent of Nelson athletes will represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games, and the countdown to Glasgow is nearly up, with the event just over a week away.

Cyclist George Bennett has already been ruled out after sustaining an injury in a crash last month, but ten others from Nelson will be wearing the silver fern in Glasgow, and some of those for the first time.

The Nelson contingent is; Anita Punt (hockey), Julian Matthews (athletics) Amy Mcilory (lawn bowls), Shannon Mcilroy (lawn bowls), Jo Edwards (lawn bowls), Val Smith (lawn bowls) Bryce Heem (rugby sevens), Shannon Francois (netball), Mark Brewer (judo) and Jack Bauer (cycling).

1500m runner Julian Matthews, a former Nelson College student, will be one of those competing at the Commonwealth Games for the first time. Speaking via email from the Athletics NZ athlete’s base in Cardiff, Julian says reality has finally sunk in that he will be competing at the Games. “It’s taken a while to sink in, but it has now – I arrived at the Athletics NZ athlete’s base here in Cardiff a couple of days ago and being around all the other team members has made it more of a reality for me. I’m really looking forward to getting my uniform and being able to try on that black singlet, while trying to keep the pressure of the event at bay for a bit longer, of course,” he says.

Nelson’s best hopes of a gold medal, outside of the rugby sevens team, lie with veteran bowlers Jo and Val. Jo won a gold medal in the pairs in 2002, while Val finished second in the singles in 2010. The duo, who are good mates off the green, are teaming up in the pairs this year and have a proven track record at international events.

The next best prospect is Anita and the women’s Black Sticks hockey team. Anita, who is one of the most experienced players in the team with 155 caps, has been scoring for fun in recent internationals and was part of the squad which won a silver medal in Dehli.

Amy and Shannon have the unique story of being husband

and wife, as well as members of the New Zealand lawn bowls team. When she was named in the squad to attend her first Commonwealth Games, Amy said she just wanted to make her family proud, and would be thinking of her late uncle and poppa when competing. “My biggest thing is definitely doing this for my family, and my mum and dad are coming over to watch.”

It’s finals weekend Can Waimea win two in a row?

Bs aim to go one better Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys will be chasing their first Car Company division two title since 2009 when they take on Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers at Trafalgar Park this Saturday.

Just three of the starting line-up – Michael Bates, Tim Fenson and Paul Burt – were part of that squad, but co-coach Wayne Bateman believes his young side have what it takes to bring the silverware back to the club after they knocked off Collingwood on Saturday. “We’re quite confident. Just like after Saturday’s game we didn’t get overawed. The boys know they’ve got a job to do this Saturday,” he says.”

Waimea Old Boys were in the final last year, but lost by just one point to champions Murchison. But with a lot of new faces, it’s hard to know whether Waimea Old Boys will be better from that experience or not.

Wanderers head into the game unbeaten, and got the better of Waimea Old Boys 18-14 earlier in the season so, as expected, Wayne says his side will be underdogs. “It was quite early in the season and we had a shocker. But to me they go in as favourites because they’re unbeaten this season since the first round.”

The match kicks off at Trafalgar Park at 1pm.

Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys captain Ben Coman says his side is excited to be back in the Car Company division one final, while Wanderers captain Jesse Pitman is hoping his team can right the wrongs of last year.

Wanderers are justifiably the top team heading into the decider. They’ve beaten Waimea Old Boys twice already this season and finished the round robin in first place.

But Waimea Old Boys come into the game on the back of some impressive form. They’ve won nine games in a row, including a win over Tasman Trophy champions Waitohi -a feat no other team managed in 2014. “Wanderers have set

the bar pretty high this season, but we are excited about the occasion and we’re probably not putting too much weight or bearing on the fact that we won last year. We respect them as a side and we respect what they’ve done this year.”

Last year, Waimea Old Boys were led by fullback James Lowe, who often ignited their exciting back line. But this year it’s a hulking forward pack which drives the team around the field. “We’ve lost some of our key Super Rugby players, but it’s probably made us work a lot harder for each other. We

know that without them we’ve had to dig deep to win games and that puts us in pretty good stead.”

Like Waimea Old Boys, Wanderers have big ball-running forwards and some exciting backs, and captain Jesse Pitman says his team is better from the experience of losing 51-22 in the final last year. “We talked last year about the three year plan but we just weren’t ready. For a few of us it was our first final and we got a bit overawed by the occasion,” he says. “But we’ve learnt so much in the last year and we’re looking forward to putting that into practice come finals time.”

The division one final kicks off at 3pm at Trafalgar Park.

Women chase 10s crown If Waimea Old Boys women beat Marist this weekend it’ll be six years in a row that they’ve finished the season as champions.

2014 saw the introduction of rugby tens instead of the 15-a-side format which Waimea had been so dominant in over the past five years, and with just one loss to their name heading into the final weekend of matches, Waimea are the frontrunners to win the title again.

The final round of rugby tens will be played at Neale Park, starting with Waimea Old Boys ver-

sus Stoke, and Riwaka versus Marist at 12noon.

It will then be followed by the Waimea Old Boys versus Marist final at 1pm, and another game between Riwaka and Stoke.

If Waimea can win both their games, the title is theirs. In fact, Marist would have to beat them by a considerable margin to have any hope of pinching first place. “We’ve beaten them twice and they’ve beaten us once,” says Waimea coach Steve Curtis. “There is no final but the result of this game will decide the title.”

The Tasman Rugby Union has selected 27 players to contest a two match pre-season tour, as selectors weigh up the final spots in the Tasman Makos squad.

The Emerging Players squad will take on Canterbury and Otago in ITM Cup warm-up matches on July 30 and August 2.

The squad comprises of 11 returning

Tasman Makos and 16 rising stars from the senior rugby competition.

Waimea Old Boys have five players -- Tevita Cabuvati, Jeff Lepa, Peter Samu, Billy Guyton and Marty Banks -- while Wanderers have seven selected -- Tyler Kearns, Siosiua Halanukonuka, Alex Ainley, Tone Ng Shiu, Dwayne Polataivao, Trael Joass and Fletcher Matthews.

Other Nelson-based players include Marist prop Reuben Northover, Nelson backs David Havili, Mitchell Scott, Ben Tyler and Robbie Malneek, and Kahurangi first-five Mike Wells.

Marlborough players make up the final nine spots.

The 2014 Golden Edge Tasman Makos will be named on Monday, August 4.

Richmond’s largest sports club is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary next month.

Richmond Athletic Football Club was founded when two clubs merged and, while its origins are a little hazy, what is known is the year club stalwart Roy Oddy was voted in as the club’s first president – 1964.

Current president, Stu Reid, is leading the organising efforts of the 50th celebrations and says it will honour its history as a laid-back, family-friendly club that has fostered the love of the game for thousands of locals.

“Many of us grew up around the clubrooms at Jubilee Park, and it’s always been a club that has accepted and involved players and supporters of all ages and abilities.”

The 50th anniversary will be held on the weekend of August 29 and 30.

On Friday night there will be a meet and greet at the clubrooms on Jubilee Park, before a past verses present game on Saturday and a celebration dinner at Club Waimea later that night.

Waimea College 10A made every post a winning one when they competed at the South Island Secondary Schools Junior Tournament held in Christchurch during the week. Waimea swept all before them as they amassed 293 goals for and only 155 against in eight games. That equates to an impressive average of 36 goals for and a mere 19 against.

As the tournament got down to the “nitty gritty”, the op-

position became stronger.

Waimea defeated St Margaret’s 26-22 in the quarter-final in order to meet Villa Maria in the semi-final. It was a very tight start, going goal for goal.

The formidable defensive duo of Louise Walker and Lauryn Davenhill toiled tirelessly to break the rhythm of Villa’s shooters. At the other end of the court Amiee Book was standing up against the pressure to calmly convert 92% of her shots, which paved the way to a 28-24 win and a berth in the final.
