Murder, mayhem and betrayal The infamous 1866 murders of five men on the Maungatapu track is soon to be immortalised on the stage at the Nelson Arts Festival. Conceived by local playwright Justin Eade, the story is based on the confessions of gang leader Richard Burgess and court transcripts. After a two-man staged reading last year, Justin says he is excited about the prospect of putting on a full production of the play and to have secured Cam West, Nick Kemplen, Pete Coates and Daniel Allan for the cast. “I’m really happy with where it’s at.” After the arts festival the show will travel to Murchison, Takaka, Picton, Blenheim and Havelock in October, but Justin says they need to fund-raise to make that a reality and have started a Boosted campaign. “There are quite a few costs involved and it’s to make sure everything is looked after to create a really strong show.” To donate to the project visit boosted.org.nz/projects/maungatapu

Queen St retailers need support in good times and bad Richmond businesses are trying to remain positive, thankful for their loyal customers who are sticking with them in good times and bad, despite the major upheaval that the Queen St upgrade is presenting.
Stage one of the $11million upgrade, which is designed to increase the capacity of stormwater pipes to prevent flooding, as well as replace ageing water pipes and telecommunications and power services, was hit by a
series of delays. Franck Sivignon, owner of The Library Café, says that he’s looking forward to stage three being finished, “everyone is”. “I understand they had problems, but I think they could be
quicker.” “It’s been a huge disruption but we like what we’ve seen from the completion of stage one, so we’re hoping we don’t get any more of the terrible delays and look forward to the finished result,” says
