Murder, mayhem and betrayal The infamous 1866 murders of five men on the Maungatapu track is soon to be immortalised on the stage at the Nelson Arts Festival. Conceived by local playwright Justin Eade, the story is based on the confessions of gang leader Richard Burgess and court transcripts. After a two-man staged reading last year, Justin says he is excited about the prospect of putting on a full production of the play and to have secured Cam West, Nick Kemplen, Pete Coates and Daniel Allan for the cast. “I’m really happy with where it’s at.” After the arts festival the show will travel to Murchison, Takaka, Picton, Blenheim and Havelock in October, but Justin says they need to fund-raise to make that a reality and have started a Boosted campaign. “There are quite a few costs involved and it’s to make sure everything is looked after to create a really strong show.” To donate to the project visit boosted.org.nz/projects/maungatapu

Queen St retailers need support in good times and bad Richmond businesses are trying to remain positive, thankful for their loyal customers who are sticking with them in good times and bad, despite the major upheaval that the Queen St upgrade is presenting.

Stage one of the $11million upgrade, which is designed to increase the capacity of stormwater pipes to prevent flooding, as well as replace ageing water pipes and telecommunications and power services, was hit by a

series of delays. Franck Sivignon, owner of The Library Café, says that he’s looking forward to stage three being finished, “everyone is”. “I understand they had problems, but I think they could be

quicker.” “It’s been a huge disruption but we like what we’ve seen from the completion of stage one, so we’re hoping we don’t get any more of the terrible delays and look forward to the finished result,” says

“Not really, I spent a lot of time on family members farms in the Motueka area, during school holidays. I loved it and I loved the animals, but I was just a kid.”

“Years ago, yes, I worked on my brother-in-law’s sheep farm. Just doing general labour jobs. My son also has a farm in North Canterbury.”

“Yes, we had a family farm in Canterbury. I’d make the morning and afternoon teas and feed the lambs, of course. We also had an apple orchard when we came up here.”

Don Clementson, Richmond. “No, living in the area I’ve been to many farms as part of the business I own and operate, and for firewood and meat, but I’ve never done any farming work.”

Retailers need support in good times and bad FROM PAGE 1 forward. “It was always going to be the most challenging stage as it was the first ‘dig’, breaking the surface, which until then you can’t have a complete picture of what is below. “It enabled a large number of solutions specific to the whole job to be identified – the unique soil structure, remnants of previous infrastructure, and the reality of old plans versus what is actually there,” Russell says. On-site community relations manager for the project, Chris Forman of Hawkins Infrastructure says, “over-and-above the complexity of the job below the ground, is the complexity of all the differing needs and requirements of the businesses.” Chris says that all footpath work is being done in the evening to ensure that all of the businesses

are accessible during the day. Once the major work is done through the day to put water, stormwater and wastewater pipes in, the buildings either side have to be connected. This can’t be done during the day as the buildings and businesses need the services to operate during the day. “We try and coordinate around opening hours, not just of day businesses, but night-time ones too, such as takeaways and restaurants.” Greg Waddington, owner of Cartridge World shares the frustration of businesses in the area. “I’m disappointed that it’s taken so long and that stage two has just started - I know there are businesses that are struggling.” “We’re a destination store so, for us so far, we haven’t experienced any reduction,” says Greg. Homes by Orange general manager Jo Neale agrees.

Council are endeavouring to restore vehicle access from Cambridge St soon after the re-opening of stage two, and Council communications advisor Chris Choat also assures customers and businesses that Richmond will be fully accessible over the summer. “We recognise the value and need to have everything open for Christmas trading. “The road will be re-sealed and re-opened for business by November 30 and work on stage six between Wensley and Salisbury Rds will resume on February 5, 2018.” In addition to core infrastructure replacement, Richmond can look forward to a modernised streetscape to create a more pedestrian-friendly space for the community. “We’re hoping that the long-term benefit will hopefully off-set the short-term disruption,” says Jo.

A call-out in last week’s Waimea Weekly for help to name unknown soldiers for a RSA memorial display area at Willow Bank Heritage Village, has already provided results. “It is very exciting that we have already found two of the missing men,” says Willow Bank owner Christine Grieder. Richmond resident Graeme Edwards was heading off on holiday, but with a bit of time up his sleeve he decided to have a quick look at the newspaper before driving to the airport. And that’s when he saw the photo of his brother, Stoker First-Class Arthur Edwards. I couldn’t believe it says Graeme. Vonda is looking forward to visiting the RSA memorial area at the September 3 open day. Christine is making a further appeal for help with four soldiers whose details are unconfirmed. “I have some information on them but I need either more details or verification,” she says. Leander was torpedoed in the Pacific and severely damaged in a night action against a Japanese squadron of ships on July 13, 1943. The blast from the torpedo explosion killed 28 of Leander’s complement of sailors, Arthur being one of them.” Bob went on to say that “he was a great guy with a great personality.” The other soldier named was Max Beattie, who served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force 3 Elementary Flying Training School. Hospital buggy service needs help Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The Nelson Hospital buggy service needs your support with a shortage of drivers and a run of expensive repairs putting pressure on the volunteers who operate the buggy. The hospital started the service in 2006 to help patients who were struggling to walk from the car park up the steep hill to the hospital’s main entrance way. Now the service is funded by the Rotary Club of North West Nelson and operated by volunteer drivers who say they need help to keep it running smoothly. “We’ve spent $4700 on maintenance in the last year,” Rotary

club committee member Russell Egan says. “We had to buy seven new batteries at $375 each and pay $1300 to repair the motor after it blew up. “And now we need four new tyres by Christmas so that’s another $800. It’s carried 4292 passengers so far this year, so it costs a bit to keep going.” Cathy Cuthbert, who coordinates the drivers, says they also need more volunteers. “We’ve got about 20 drivers at present but always need more,” Cathy says. “They do about four hours a fortnight when we have a full roster so it’s not too big a commitment.” Cathy says people can apply to be volunteer drivers at the hospital reception but will need to be vetted before they are

accepted. In addition to being good drivers, Cathy says the volunteers must be good listeners and empathetic. “It’s a bigger job that just driving passengers around,” Cathy says. “You might have to pick up someone from out of town who’s come to visit a family member who’s in intensive care, so you have to have lots of compassion.” Russell says volunteer drivers also have need to know when to put the pedal to the metal. “I picked up a woman who was in labour once and she was so close I thought I was going to have to deliver the baby. I’ve never driven so fast in my life.” The hospital buggy service runs Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

War graves decision ‘all about cost’ Charles Anderson The decision to exclude Commonwealth veterans from getting military plaques on their grave sites was the result of bureaucracy gone wrong, according to a government department insider. For months, the Weekly has been trying to get a straight answer from the Government as to why the decision was made to remove eligibility of Commonwealth veterans for military plaques on their grave sites. The move left Nelson war hero John Beeching without a plaque and having to rely on local fund-raising to make

sure he is recognised when he dies. It also came as a surprise to Christine Paris, the daughter of war veteran Grace Lane who was born in England and served during WWII but lived in Nelson for more than 60 years. Until now it has been unclear why the decision was made, however, now a former member of the Veteran Affairs team has spoken out about what he saw under his watch. “It was a unilateral decision by Veterans Affairs bureaucrats to interpret the law in a certain way,” he says. “It saddens me - these veterans have had their eligibility ripped from underneath them.”

The insider says the Burial and Cremations Act dictates that all people who had been on operations as part of “her Majesty’s Forces” would be eligible for Government-funded burials. However, bureaucrats not only interpreted that to mean “armed forces”, “[the law] is quite silent on the nationality of those forces,” the insider says. The insider says by wiping the eligibility of Commonwealth veterans, it amounts to “penny-pinching”. The legislation is currently under review with a result expected towards the end of the year.

Rallying to support Nelson Cancer Society

14th - 20th August 2017

Simon Bloomberg The Nelson Vintage Car Club will be joining their car-crazy colleagues around New Zealand on Sunday, August 27 in a nationwide vintage car rally to raise funds for the Cancer Society. And everyone else with a car is invited to the Daffodil Rally for Cancer with Nelson Vintage Car Club chairman Jim Wareing saying “come and join us, it doesn’t matter what kind of car you drive”. The rally is being held as part of the Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Day fund-raiser and Jim hopes that owners of all makes, model and vintages of cars come along to support “a great cause". “The club’s members will be supporting it and we’ve invited all the members from the other 27 car clubs around Nelson to come along, too,” Jim says. “But we would like anyone with a car to join in and, if they do, we could get two or three hundred cars which would be great.” Jim says the rally will start at their clubrooms in the Speedway Association grounds on Lower Queen St, at 1pm. Drivers will choose either a long 85km or shorter 55km rally route through outlying towns before finishing at the QuayConnect on Vickerman St in Port Nelson. There will be a public display of the cars and an option to bring your own afternoon tea. Entry is $10 for each car with all proceeds from the rally going to work that the Nelson Cancer Society does in the community. Public admission to the display is by a gold coin donation. Homes by Orange building for charity Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A Nelson house-building company is planning to give away thousands of dollars to the community when it donates the proceeds from one of their new homes to charity. Orange Residential Homes was this week rebranded as Homes by Orange and, to celebrate the milestone, launched its Build for Charity fund-raising campaign. The Richmond-based company will build a $258,000 house on a section in the Katania Heights near Brightwater for cost and donate the proceeds of the sale to the Child Cancer Foundation Nelson, Nelson SPCA and the Fifeshire Foundation. Homes by Orange co-owner and general manager Jo Neale says they do something for charity every year and this year wanted to make it fun by letting the public decide the supreme winner. The proceeds from the auction will go to the charity with the most votes with the second and third-placed charities each receiving a consolation prize of $1000. “Over the years, we have donated cash and time to various charities but this year our team wanted

to help keep construction costs down to maximise the proceeds going to the charities. Although Jo is reluctant to estimate a dollar value of the proceeds, he says it will be a “significant amount”. Child Cancer Foundation Nelson ambassador Chris Jack says Build for Charity is a “fantastic idea” and he’s delighted they have been selected as one of the charities.

“It’s cool a company is prepared to do something like this and I’m sure all the suppliers will get behind it,” Chris says. “The more the suppliers help out, the better it will be for the charity.” Fifeshire Foundation’s Rachel Swarbrick says they are “very pleased to be included” in a fundraiser that’s “a good fit with our philosophy of locals looking out

Diamond anniversary celebrated with gold Judene Edgar Bert Smith isn’t really a dancer, but “after a couple of gins” he was good enough to catch the eye of a young Beryl Miller, and now the couple are looking forward to celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this Thursday. And although a 60th wedding anniversary is traditionally referred to as the ‘diamond anniversary’, Bert and Beryl are celebrating with gold. “Beryl’s father was a gold digger in the depression days, and when he died Beryl inherited a wee bit of gold in a jar,” says Bert. “So Paul Harris Jewellers have made a new wedding ring for Beryl out of it.” “It’s very special because now I can pass it on to my daughter,” says Beryl. And because of his work Bert has never had a wedding ring, so another family heirloom was created. “We’ve also had a wedding ring made for Bert out of my grandmother’s wedding ring, my aunt’s mother’s ring, and my own wedding ring.” The anniversary day is being spent with friends and they’re looking forward to “an extended family celebration” next

month, so the rings are tucked away safely until then. Family has been a constant thread since their first meeting 62 years ago. Nineteen-year-old Beryl was invited to an engagement party by a friend who thought she might like her cousin Dennis. But the next day, it was Dennis’s older brother Bert who “purposefully drove past” her Motupipi house while she was gardening, and popped in for a cup of tea. “Bert has two left feet, but we used to go to all of the dances,” says Beryl, although Bert notes, “Beryl’s mother used to accompany us to all of them.” Bert won over Beryl and her parents, and after a 12-month courtship he asked for their permission to marry her. They married at the Anglican Church in Takaka, August 17, 1957. The wedding date was the same as Bert’s parents, Sidney and Hilda (nee Hickmott), who had married in 1927. A couple of weeks before they married they bought a house in Stoke, but they didn’t even get to settle in before Bert, who was a crusher plant foreman, was transferred to Hari Hari. But when Beryl became preg-

nant with their first child, Bert left the role so they could shift back to Nelson to be closer to family. Bert worked in roading and infrastructure and in the weekends coached, played, refereed and managed rugby. He was a member of the first-ever Stoke senior side and was a Nelson rep from 1962 to 1966. They shifted to Belgrove in 1972 and renovated an old homestead on five acres before moving into Wakefield. Once the children were older, Beryl joined the Wakefield bowling club, also becoming a Nelson rep. The couple have three sons and a daughter, and are delighted that all the family still live in the top of the south. “We also have 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson,” says Beryl. “We’re blessed to have so many family around. Everyone gets together for Christmas and birthdays and special occasions.” “It’s not always been smooth sailing, but we’ve had a good life and our family brings us so much joy,” says Beryl, adding that the secret to a happy marriage, is “forgiving each other and trust.”

Sad day for Oakwoods residents Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

One of Oakwoods Retirement Homes’ longest-serving and most loved staff members has retired after 24 years of looking after hundreds of residents who have become her second family. Bev Inwood started at Oakwoods in 1993 as a care giver when it was just a small hospital, later becoming a diversional therapist as the hospital expanded into a retirement home. Last Friday, Bev said goodbye to the staff and residents of Oakwoods at a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party attended by all the Alice in Wonderland characters. Bev says she has grown fond of all the residents over the years and now regards them as her friends and family. She says her role as diversional therapist has been a lot of fun and she has enjoyed helping the residents learn new skills and thrive in their twilight years. “My job has been to stimulate them and make sure they always have plenty to do. We make sure there’s lots of activities and help them take up new hobbies and go on lots of road trips. “Once they start getting involved in all

It can be very satisfying but it can also be very sad because this is a transitional

place and we lose so many of our friends.” Although Bev is retiring, she promised residents that she would “keep popping in to see how everyone is going”.

“I will miss you all – you have been so much a part of my life,” she told the residents. “I’ve had a whale of a time here.” Bev says she and her husband Ian have bought a small cara-

van and plan to do some travelling in her retirement. She also intends to take up target shooting again and continue with her favourite past-time of leisure marching.

Letter to the Editor In response to the insert published in last week’s Waimea Weekly on behalf of Waimea Irrigators expressing disappointment they are not getting their way to have their preferred Rolls Royce water scheme subsidised by the ratepayer. Water is a 100 per cent private good and must be paid for 100 per cent by those who consume it, whether that is for private consumption or as an input to profit making. There are other solutions which are far more physically, environmentally and economically sustainable

and will not need a perpetual subsidy of tens of millions of dollars over the project lifecycle and it is time TDC accepted this as being the bottom line for the vast majority of ratepayers across the district. Yes, reinforcing water supply is important. It just needs to be sustainable, affordable and paid for by those who benefit and only those who benefit. This includes the environmental flow component which is required to offset the extraction for private consumption. Paul MacLennan, Brightwater

Redundancies at T & G T&G Foods plant in Stoke will be making a number of staff in their juicing operation redundant. The company’s general manager Colin Lyford says, “a combination of unfavourable foreign exchange rates and increased competition in the worldwide apple juice concentrate market has resulted in any outputs from the Nelson juicing factory being unprofitable.” He says the number of staff impacted by the change can’t be specified “at this point”. The Waimea Weekly understands that the operation employs about eight permanent staff. Footpaths under siege Tasman accessibility advocacy group Access 4 All is objecting to a proposal to allow NZ Post to use new electric delivery vehicles on

the district’s footpaths. The New Zealand Transport Agency has approved an exemption for the vehicles but NZ Post also needs the approval of the Tasman District Council to operate these vehicles on their footpaths. However, A4A says the vehicles will present a danger to many pedestrians. Council will be discussing the issue at its meeting in Richmond on Thursday. Armed robber arrested Nelson Police have made an arrest following the robbery of the Lower Moutere Store on May 22 which involved a man demanding cash from two shop workers while threatening them with a knife. The Ragged Crow Morris Dancers are celebrating their eighth birthday this weekend with a series of public displays of the English folk dance that dates back to 1448. Perhaps best remembered as a form of comedic relief on the television series Blackadder, morris dancing is known for its unusual attire, with dancers wearing top hats with feathers, highlyadorned jackets and bells on their shinpads. Troupe member Roger Dunham says traditionally dancers put

coal on their faces to avoid being recognised by their employers to enable them to busk, because begging was against the law and morris dancing was even banned at one stage. “Wearing top hats was also their way of poking fun at the gentry.” The dances themselves feature sticks and handkerchiefs being wielded by the dancers to the sound of accordions and drums. They will be dancing at Victory Square from 11am, 1903 Square from 11.45am, outside the Milton St Sprig & Fern in Nelson from

1.45pm and then at Founders Park from 2.45pm - it will be cancelled in the event of heavy rain. Roger says that the group practise each week during the winter and then during spring and summer they spend a lot of time dancing at outdoor events around the region. “Our calendar is already starting to fill up with school fairs and festi-

vals.” The group perform two styles of dancing, the Border tradition, which features the blackened faces and clothes, and the Cotswold style, where the dancers wear white shirts. Following their ‘give-it-a-go’ day in June, the troupe have welcomed some new dancers into their fold.

Louis follows his (Midsummers Night) dream Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Waimea College student Louis Boutle has come a long way since he first enrolled in performing arts classes in year 10 and is now preparing for his biggest role yet at the National Shakespeare Schools Production in Wellington. Louis only started acting in year 10 when he enrolled in performing arts and performing arts technology classes to help overcome his shyness. However, Louis found he enjoyed theatre so much he continued taking the classes and this year was selected to attend the National Shakespeare Festival in Wellington following his performance as part of Waimea College’s cast at the regional Shakespeare Festival. “In year 9, I was so shy I decided to do performing arts to force me to be more outgoing,” Louis says. “I knew I’d be nervous getting up there but I gradually got better and better and now I really enjoy it.” And Louis performed so well in

Now Louis is hoping he can perform well enough in Wellington to make the cut for the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company, which travels to the Globe Theatre in London next year. There’s no place like home After three years at Saxton Stadium, Art Expo Nelson is returning home to the Trafalgar Centre this weekend. Now in its sixth year, the annual three-day art event will showcase over 1000 artworks by more than 100 artists from all over New Zealand. Event Manager, Nic Foster, thinks visitors to the show will be impressed with the new look venue. “We were grateful to have somewhere to go [Saxton Stadium] while the Trafalgar Centre was closed for the earthquake strengthening, but it was a bit like staying at a friend’s house and now we’re stoked to be back.

“The Trafalgar Centre is looking amazing and we just can’t wait until Art Expo Nelson kicks off on Friday.” Just like previous years, Nic says they expect to see lots of people in over the weekend having a relaxed wander, buying art, meeting the artists, and just enjoying the atmosphere. Hope artist Emily Lake says that this is her fifth year in a row exhibiting at the expo. “I love seeing everyone’s work and how diversely the same materials can be used,” she says. Emily has been a glass artist, making memorial beads, jewellery and small sculptures for

the past six years, as well as an acrylic artist on both canvas and board. “Some of my work is controlled but I like my mediums to do their own thing so it can be quite random. “No two pieces are the same. I especially like working with glass because with flame work you don’t know the final outcome until it cools down, so it’s quite exciting.” Art Expo Nelson will be held at the Trafalgar Centre from Friday, August 18 to Sunday, August 20, from 10am each day. Entry is $5 for adults, children under 15 free.

Emily Lake is getting her works ready for this weekend’s Art Expo Nelson at the Trafalgar Centre.

Making a good impression Judene Edgar The Impressions Art Awards is celebrating its 10th birthday in style with a new home – the Mapua Hall. For the past nine years the national Awards have been held at the Refinery Art Space in Nelson. This year’s organising panel, comprising Ruby Coast artist Graeme Stradling, and Glenys Forbes, artist and organiser of the successful 2016 national pastel artists convention, felt that the time was right to move the Awards to the Tasman district. With support from the Tasman District Council, Graeme says that the shift rec-

ognises the creative vitality and calibre of artists in the Tasman area. “Mapua has strong interest and history in the visual arts” says Graeme, “so it is exciting to be able to share this place with artists and visitors from around the country.” Sponsor Lewis Della Bosca, from Impressions Art Supplies, says that “from their humble beginnings in 2006, with the support of Arts Council Nelson, the Awards have developed into a major event on the Nelson visual arts calendar.” For Graeme, it’s a coming-of-age for both the Awards and the Hall, which was first opened in 1945 and under-

went a major refurbishment in 2013 enabling it to host a range of local and national events including movie nights, workshops and classes, sports events, concerts, conferences and, of course, the art awards. Despite being a national competition, the organising panel anticipate that many local artists will take part too. The exhibition will take place from October 7 to 15 at the Mapua Hall, Aranui Rd, Mapua. Entries for the awards are now open for paintings, drawings, graphics, original prints and mixed media. Lifestyle blockers learn handy skills Jessie Johnston Dovedale School has taken a practical approach to fund-raising, hosting a farm skills day on Saturday for local lifestyle block owners. Organised by the PTA, the event came to fruition as many of them owned lifestyle blocks but didn’t have the knowledge to make the most of them. “When we bought our block, I knew nothing but I wanted to learn and so I was looking for some way of gaining those skills but there was nothing around, so I decided we could do something and raise some money for the school at the same time,” says Dovedale School PTA member, Kirsten Pickwell. “People were buzzing after the first workshop, so we’re stoked. They were just into it and excited about being able to ask those dumb questions that everyone else has as well, which is fantastic.” The educational, hands-on day featured nine workshops, with the 42 participants choosing up to four to get involved in. These included fencing, chainsaw skills, everything one needs to know about sheep, welding, pasture management, animal health, orchard management, garden and composting and butchery. While the overall event was sponsored by Farmlands, several other

UEEN STREET

What you need to know Work has moved up Queen Street and there are some changes to where you can drive. Vehicle access is now open from Gladstone Road and McIndoe Place, and there is a temporary entrance/exit to the Noel Leeming carpark from the lower end of Queen Street.

Key things to remember: •

All shops are open for business as usual

Parking is available on much of Queen Street, and in the many carparks at the rear of the shops (accessible from the ring road)

Vehicle access is restricted from Noel Leeming to just past Sundial Square, including via Cambridge Street and Sundial Square/Croucher Street

Most of the underground infrastructure is now complete in Stage 2, from Noel Leeming to Cambridge Street and reconstruction of the street surface is set to begin. Stage 3 is also underway, from Cambridge Street to ASB Bank. There’s lots to see in this area, with diggers and machinery working away in the construction zone, as well as wacky mirrors, colourful chalkboards and information panels along the footpath to have fun with. Head down there to see what’s happening and support our local businesses at the same time.

Friendship with a purpose Judene Edgar Club President Sharon Martin and her team from Inner Wheel Waimea Nelson may be the most recent club to join the international organisation, but that hasn’t slowed their drive and commitment, with their latest project being fidget mats for people with dementia. Inner Wheel is one of the largest women’s volunteer service organisations in the world. The 4000 clubs take part in a wide range of work for charities and causes with the aim to give people ‘happier futures and better lives’. “I saw an ad in the paper about five years ago and it mentioned ‘friendship with a purpose’”, says Sharon, “and it really resonated because I like to be able to give back to the community.” The group was established by “the three musketeers”, Sharon, Pat Burrage and Janet Newell. “I like the friendship and meeting new people,” says Pat. “We enjoy ourselves and have a good laugh. “Everyone contributes different things.” Their latest project is fidget mats for people with dementia, which was the brainchild of Gwytha France. Gwytha, who humbly describes herself as a “home sewer”, found the idea online and thought that it would be a good project for the group. “We get ideas from each other and from other groups,” says Gwytha. “We do a range of projects, knitting tiny teddies for Ma’s Place, collecting for Daffodil Day, cooking for the ‘Look good feel better’ lunches, and sewing silk pillows for the Can-

cer Society,” says Sharon, “so this seemed like a great idea.” The group have been holding working bees to produce the mats using their imaginations to create an interesting variety of mats based on “what’s in front of you, what people find in their cupboards, and things we’ve bought from second hand shops,” says Gwytha. Often, during the later stages of dementia, people’s hands fidget as though agitated or searching for something to hold. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease – which around two-thirds of people with dementia have. Alzheimer’s Nelson Manager Heather Lackner says, “people with dementia are often looking for things to do and can become confused or disoriented if they don’t find something.” “Fidget mats can be quite soothing and therapeutic. “It’s tactile and gives them something to do.” In addition to their craft and cooking projects, they have monthly meetings with either a guest speaker or go on an outing, as well as their newly established, bi-monthly coffee mornings. Sharon says they are always keen to welcome new people along. “The whole club is based on friendship and the opportunity to give back where there’s a need,” says Sharon. “We’re a casual, friendly group. “People can come to what interests them.” If people are interested in obtaining a fidget mat or joining Inner Wheel, they can contact Sharon on 544 8312.

INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS TO INDUSTRY

A career with Brightwater Engineering For many there’s more to a job than simply being a means to bring home the bacon. If you enjoy what you do your job feels a little less like work and if you aspire for personal growth, it’s important to find a workplace that will readily help you rise through the ranks. Brightwater Engineers Ltd is a company that is pretty well known throughout the Top of the South and beyond. It has gone through a lot of change over the last decade however, it is focused on “getting back to its knitting”, and as a result it provides a really strong and secure employment offering to relevant trades people with the right work ethic and attitude. One of Brightwater’s core capabilities is its fabrication and industrial maintenance services. In order for this offering to function effectively it relies on a bunch of skilled trades people who are keen on doing a quality job while keeping each other safe every day. The company has been involved in various local projects in association with other Nelson based compa-

The guys take real pride in the work they’ve completed - often large steel structures which are highly visible to the public. Combining the potential for a good income with the variety of secured work on offer, it’s not difficult to see why many former employees like Tom Woolf and Mike Carmody (pictured) have returned to Brightwater Engineers. With a solid pipeline of work and secure long-term employment on offer for suitably skilled tradespeople, Brightwater Engineers would welcome a confidential chat with anyone looking for a change in employer and who can enhance the company’s heavy fabrication, industrial maintenance and industrial electrical installation offerings. Apprenticeships are also offered to people who can balance a solid practical aptitude with a professional attitude and desire to learn.

A leader in quality engineering solutions “I started working for Brightwater Engineering after school, then I went and did my apprenticeship as a maintenance diagnostics engineer. After completing my apprenticeship I spent time in the Gas Industry in Western Australia, and have returned since to complete roles in the Projects side of the business. I’ve been working within the sales team since January this year. In total, I have been with Brightwater for over ten years now. As well as the great bunch of people here, I came back to Brightwater Engineering because of the opportunities they offer to develop. You can do anything you want within the company when it comes to your own personal growth, it’s up to you and as employers, they get the right people for the right role. While we’re currently working on expanding our electrical capabilities, Brightwaters Engineering’s mechanical side offers a great start for young people wanting to learn a trade, which can end up taking them around the world.” - Mike Carmody, Technical Sales Engineer at Brightwater Engineering “Before coming to Brightwater Engineering I was branch manager for a courier company. Before that I had worked in the hospitality industry so I didn’t have any background in steel work/fabrication. I’m now a production engineer at Brightwater Engineering, I started eight years ago as a trade assistant and did my adult apprenticeship. I was really green, I’d never cut a piece of steel, drilled a hole or anything so I’ve learnt a hell of a lot. The fact they offer adult apprenticeships is great and we’ve had a lot of guys come through here as older apprentices. There’s also good pathways through into management and there’s a huge variety of work on offer for the trades team.” - Sean McGettigan, Production Engineer at Brightwater Engineering

For more information on Brightwater Engineers Ltd employment and apprenticeship opportunities, don’t hesitate to contact: Rachel McMurtry (People and Safety Advisor) today on 543 5300 or email her at rachel@brightwater.co.nz

“I’ve been with Brightwater for 14 years and currently work as sales account manager. I was doing my engineering pre-trade course at polytech when Brightwater took me on for the chance to gain work experience. Then they ended up taking me on as a full time heavy fabricator apprentice. I did my time there, became a tradesman and two years ago I became the sales representative for the workshop. Brightwater is very good at helping people better themselves, so if they see potential in someone, they’re happy to spend the money to upskill them, especially when it comes to trades staff. It’s hard to find trades staff so to pull me out of an area where they needed me, and put me into the position I’m in now, it shows you that they are keen to help employees develop. If you’re wanting to do engineering, we do everything from small backyard jobs to full on projects, so there’s a whole diverse range of engineering that gives you quite a bit of experience.” - Jamie Evans, Sales Account Manager, Brightwater Engineering “I came to Brightwater Engineering straight from school and started as an apprentice. As educators, they ensure you learn all the skills to be a safe and accomplished member of the team, and as employers they really look after the guys. After six and a half years working for Brightwater Engineering, I left for two years before coming back in February this year. It’s generally just a great place to work, a good bunch of guys and you get a wide variety of projects to work on, not to mention opportunities to work off-site if you want to earn some extra money.” - Tom Woolf, Heavy Fabricator at Brightwater Engineering

Eleena Kennedy has been working hard to achieve her vision of an equestrian arts centre in Nelson Tasman and while her property is still being developed, the purpose-built arena for teaching and demonstrations has now been completed. This summer Eleena will be bringing people a range of equestrian based opportunities, whether they are experienced riders looking for a new challenge, first timers after an equestrian experience or those simply wanting to watch Eleena and her horses work their magic. The arena has been built into the ground so those watching from the banks are able to look down on the horse and better capture its movement. Already Eleena has hosted a handful of groups for demonstrations, theatrical performances and recently made a return visit to Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village, with her stallion Zefiro, to entertain the residents. Eleena also offers a handy horse cover repair service. Eleena is proud to showcase the beauty and elegance of horses, so for more information on her riding classes, including horsemanship, physio biomechanics and lunge work, or demonstrations and theatrical performances, contact her today on 021 191 8011, or follow her on Facebook at www.facebook.com/classicalequestrianart/. From the presidents pen A big thank you to all who attended and helped make our 46th Anniversary Cabaret a success. While not everything was perfect we had a very good night with a lot of dancing; and the incredibly generous spirit with which members embraced the bring-a-plate supper was mind boggling. Thank you. We are delighted to welcome Bill Ferguson back as a director of Lewis Della Bosca the club. Bill was a director several years ago and we believe his experience will serve us well. His appointment fills the vacancy created by the recent resignation of Kevin Harris due to business commitments. In line with club rules this appointment is only until the next Club Waimea annual general meeting, when the position will be re-opened for nominations in the usual way. It has been decided to establish an events sub-committee to help initiate, co-ordinate and oversee events such as the cabaret, Christmas/New Year celebrations, Melbourne Cup day, mid-winter Christmas party etc. Donna Rae will lead this ideas/action group which includes Amba Waghorn and Jason Marsh from the executive. If you want to be part of it and help breathe fresh life into the club’s social scene, have a word with Donna or myself. Recent trading figures and member involvement show our club to be in very good heart - let’s keep going along this path together. I am greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Life Member Myrtle Friend. A truly lovely lady, to me she was always very warm, supportive and encouraging, and my heartfelt thoughts go out to Stan, Mark and Diane.

From left, Heather de Malmanche, Cliff de Malmanche, Sharon Rogers, John Andrews and Janis Andrews dressed to impress at the recent cabaret to mark Club Waimea’s 46th anniversary.

Managers Monthly Snippet Hi everyone, another month has quickly flashed by, I just don’t know where the time is going. I have had a host of visitors over the last month or so and all have thoroughly enjoyed visiting your club, and appreciated the way they were welcomed. The last one to visit, Lazza, just this weekend, felt

the going a bit tough and as such had to put up with a fair bit of ribbing from one Noel Waters on Sunday afternoon. I guess he will just have to put in a better effort next time down here. Over the last month we have had many different groups making the most of our facilities and with the Jazz, Nelson Coun-

try Music, all our other entertainers, the cabaret, Nelson Social Dance, ex West Coasters, etc. it has been very busy but extremely enjoyable. Let’s keep it up so don’t be backward in coming forward and putting our name in front of people for any events that they may be looking to organise.

Members of ZEAL, will be working alongside Nelson Bays Harmony Choir to teach aspiring singers the magic or 4-part harmony, during the upcoming Naked Harmony Workshop.

Harmony Chorus welcomes aspiring singers

Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus has a passion for singing and wants to share their love of music with others. That’s why they’re hosting the Naked Harmony Workshop, the name being a nod to the popular Naked Choir television programme. Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus is the women’s A Capella barbershop specialist in Nelson and will be working alongside women’s champion U25 barbershop quartet, ZEAL, from Auckland, to teach aspiring female singers the magic of 4-part harmony. During the workshop, attendees will focus on learning to sing “Why Does Love Do This to Me”, by the New Zealand band, The Exponents. To experience the buzz of small group harmony singing, participants will have the opportunity

to sing with members of Zeal, either as part of an octet including ZEAL, or they can tag out a member of ZEAL and sing in the quartet themselves. There will also be options to try out different combinations of singers during the workshop. The Naked Harmony Workshop is a great chance to find likeminded women to sing with, in a small group (quartet, sextet or octet) or potentially as part of Nelson Bays Harmony. If people are already part of a small group, bring them all along and participate in this learning and performance opportunity together. At the end of the workshop, people can choose to participate in an “open mic” session and are invited to get a group together and come with a song prepared for this moment.

Try your hand at Housie Bingo

Come along and join in a great night of fun playing Housie. Held on Wednesday nights in the Club Waimea restaurant from 7pm. 50 games - $5 per card, Super House - $1 per ticket. Raffles are also available.

Children join in the Tug O’ War against the Tasman Makos rugby team at the Makos Family Fun Day held at Trafalgar Park on Sunday. Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport.

Makos fans fun day out Brittany Spencer The Tasman Makos Family Fun Day was a chance for fans to meet their heroes and Nelson certainly made the most of it. About 700 supporters watched this season’s squad train at Trafalgar Park before getting the chance to meet, get signatures from, and battle their heroes in a gigantic game of tug-o-war. Among the masses was eight-year-old Jenna Ross, with her signed rugby ball and a grin that lasted all day. Having just started playing tackle for the Waimea Old Boys under-8 Makos, Jenna’s dad Richard says she’s obsessed with rugby and the Makos and jumped at the chance to meet the big boys. “She really loved interacting with all the players and getting their autographs, and she’s a big James Lowe fan so she was rapt to see him,” said Richard. Jenna has been playing rugby for three years after following her big brother into the sport and says she is keen to play for the Black Ferns. “She loves rugby, she’s always right into the scrum somewhere and she’s not afraid to get in there and mix it up with the boys.” The Makos will kick off their clash against Canterbury at 7.35pm this Friday at Trafalgar Park, tickets are available at www.makos.co.nz.

Devon on hockey rollercoaster ride Simon Bloomberg Richmond’s Devon Stove will be putting his field hockey stick aside for a couple of weeks and picking up his in-line skates and stick as he joins the New Zealand junior in-line hockey team for the world champs in China. The 17-year-old Nelson College student has been playing in-line and field hockey since he was at primary school and has been a regular member of national inline age group teams since he was 12. Devon was selected for the team to play at the world junior champs after trialling last December and next Tuesday travels to Nanjing to play in the tournament which is part of the World Roller Games. He is also assistant captain of the team. Devon says the games will feature 10 different roller sports, including in-line hockey, rink hockey, downhill in-line racing, skateboarding, roller derby and freestyle in-line skating. All the best in-line hockey nations have entered and Devon says the standard of competition will be extremely high. “All the big ice hockey nations will be there, like the US and Canada

Devon Stove is heading to China next week for the junior world in-line hockey champs. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. and Sweden, and they are the top in-line teams too. “There will be 18 teams playing in four pools with the top two in each pool going through to the quarters, so it’s going to be very difficult even making the top eight.”

And when Devon is finished in China, he’ll be getting straight back into the field hockey when he returns to New Zealand on September 2, flying directly from Auckland to Palmerston North and then driving to Whanganui to play for Nelson College in the

Founders Cup secondary schoolboys tournament. “It’s going to interesting switching from in-line back to field again because they are two completely different games. “There’s only five players on the rink in in-line and you can use

both sides of the stick and there’s a puck instead of a ball – the rules are different too.” But first of all, Devon will have to attend to some field hockey commitments with his Nelson College First XI team playing in the Tasman secondary school champs at the hockey turf at Saxton Field on Tuesday and Wednesday. Devon says the tournament will be an emotional one for many of the Nelson College players as they will be contesting the Mark Wilkens Memorial Trophy, in memory of the Nelson provincial stalwart who died suddenly at Saxton Field in 2015. “My dad (Craig) played touch with Wilkie so I’d known him all my life,” Devon says. “I was also playing in the game when he died and he was a Nelson College Old Boy, so it means a lot to us.” Devon will be wearing the team’s No11 jersey in memory of Mark who also wore the same number in his playing days. Devon’s jersey has the words ‘In memory of Mark Wilkens’ embroidered on the sleeve. Nelson College will play Waimea College, Nayland College and Marlborough Boys College in the tournament.

A permanent orienteering course is the latest sporting attraction in Nelson Lakes National Park after the joint project between the Nelson Orienteering Club and the Department of Conservation was officially opened at the weekend. The course was adapted by Lindsay Smith from a map used in the national orienteering champs held in St Arnaud last year. It is believed to be the first permanent orienteering course in a national park and Lindsay says he’d like to see more courses set up in other parks around the country. “We already have a few permanent courses around Nelson and one in Kaiteriteri and they are quite popular so why not have them

in national parks,” Lindsay says. “The staff at the DOC centre in St Arnaud tell me that people are always coming in and asking, ‘what can we do here?’ so this just adds to the other attractions that are already there.” Lindsay says the St Arnaud map used at last year’s nationals has been simplified for the permanent course so that it is suitable for children and novice orienteers. However, the course is still proving popular with experienced orienteers who are using it for training. DOC’s Tracey Grose says they are “very excited” to support the Nelson Orienteering Club’s initiative for a permanent course around the St Arnaud village and lakefront tracks of the park. Copies of the map are available from the Nelson Lakes visitor centre for a small donation.

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: A:

My partner and I constantly fight about money. It is so stressful! What can I do? If both are willing, it is possible to have calm and healthy discussions about money. Understanding each other’s point of view is a good starting point

 Discuss each other’s beliefs about money: - What did your parents teach you? - What are your financial goals? - What are your fears about money?  Be a team: - Agree on a spending plan - Make time to sit together and organise bill paying etc. - Work together to achieve your shared goals  Seek support: - An objective mentor can help you with money planning and debt management. - A good relationship therapist can help you to break unhealthy habits and improve communication.  Is money tight? What are skills or assets can you use to increase your income?  ‘Not now’ doesn’t mean ‘never’. Your current circumstances are just that. There is always a way forward; it may not be easy or instant. Remember, if you keep doing the same thing, you will keep getting the same result. Is that what you want?

Next month, Shinaye will be heading south to Timaru to compete in the inter-regional cross-country event. “It’s just her determination really, she’s awesome, she just puts her head down and does it. I think this is a great team as well, it’s such a family-orientated team and the boys are really cool, they’re just all really good friends,” says proud mum, Kylie Osborne. With the game over, score 8-4 to Waimea Red, both teams took to the pitch for a roll in the mud. Over on the neighbouring field, Waimea Old Boys Under-10 Makos won their game against Rangers, 13-9.

Dotting down tries, making tackles and getting muddy are Shinaye Toms’ favourite parts of rugby and she got to do all three on Saturday morning at Jubilee Park. A valued member of Waimea Old Boys Under-10 Red team, Shinaye has been playing the sport for the last three years and scored twice on Saturday morning, helping her team take the win in their match against Waimea Old Boys Under-10 White. “She’s awesome, she’s always got lots of energy, runs the ball very nicely, she’s into it, she’s one of our great athletes,” says team manager, Andrew Fisher. Tasman Titans trio in SI league squad Andrew Board Journalist

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The latest crop of rugby league players will get their shot at glory, after making the South Island representative squad. Todd Moore, Tyler Edwards and Rakoia Dooley were all selected for the 30-man South Island squad, picked from an under-17 regional tournament last month where they represented the Tasman Titans. The pathway from the under-17 South Island tournament to the national tournament was the same pathway that Marvin Curry used to secure a National Rugby League contract with Gold Coast Titans. Tyler and Rakoia both attend Nelson College while Todd goes to Waimea College. All three play rugby union regularly and say getting used to rugby league has taken some adjustment. The Titans team was only pulled together weeks before the South Island tournament. The Titans comfortably lost its first two games, against West Coast and Canterbury – two regions that play regular club league – before a narrow loss to Otago and a win over Southland. All three said they enjoyed representing the region and are hoping to make the final cut before the national tournament. Tasman Makos, has since risen through the ranks of provincial rugby, showing the opposition that while it may be part of the country’s smallest rugby union, it shares a lot of traits with its mascot and namesake. The Mako shark has long been admired for its legendary tenacity and willingness to fight to the last, as well as its speed, strength and agility. In 2013 the Tasman Makos won the ITM Championship Cup against Hawkes Bay, promoting them to the ITM Premiership Division where they continued to succeed. In 2014, they made it all the way through to the final, going down in a thriller match against Taranaki. For the 2015 season the Makos had hopes of going one better than cup runners-up, but were knocked out by Auckland in the semi-final, then in 2016, for the second time in three years, the Tasman Makos went all the way to the premiership final, losing to Canterbury in a gallant effort. Now, with the 2017 season set to kick off for them this Friday, the Tasman Makos’ coaches and management have named a squad of 28 players to contest the Mitre 10 Cup Premiership. “The squad is looking particularly good, there’s a lot of experience from returning players and a handful of fresh new players who will bring en-

thusiasm,” says Tasman Rugby Union Commercial and Marketing manager, Les Edwards. “Having been there before will stand them in good stead, they know what it’s like to go through the pain of losing a couple of finals and they won’t want to do that again.” Hooker Andrew Makalio is joined by Ti’i Paulo, along with

Finlay Christie and Billy Guyton have been named as half backs, Mitchell Hunt and Tim O’Malley as first-fives and David Havili, Trael Joass, Levi Aumua and Alex Nankivell will fill the mid-field backs. Completing the 2017 team are outside backs, Tima Faingaanuku, Viliami Lolohea, Will Jordan and James Lowe.

The team will be coached by Leon MacDonald with assistance from Leo Crowley, Andrew Goodman and Greg Somerville, with Martyn Vercoe as team manager. With three pre-season wins already under their belt, confidence in the Makos to go all the way this season is high. “We’re happy with where we are at the moment,” says assistant coach Leo Crowley. “The first two weeks are just basically integrating the club-based players with the Super Rugby guys and we’ll go from there. We’re very keen to start well, obviously we’re playing our neighbours so there’s a bit of hype around that, so we’ll be ready come Friday.” Makos fans can also get excited about the draw which

will see games against Canterbury, Southland and Auckland played at home in Nelson, while Wellington and North Harbour will be hosted at Lansdowne Park, the Makos’ Blenheim venue. This year each home game will also be supporting a different charity including Cancer Society, Helicopter Rescue and Women’s Refuge, plus, the Pic’s Peanut Butter picnic area will be another entertainment for fans during the Auckland match. For people looking to make the most of the 2017 season, The Rock Makos Supporters Club is a great way to meet fellow fans and the players. Pre- and postmatch functions will be held at Turf Hotel for the Canterbury match, while the Marist clubrooms will be hosting these functions for the Southland and Auckland games. The aim

of the club is to bring back the traditional after-match function to provincial rugby, however, the club also offers other great benefits including discounted tickets to each Makos home game, prime east stand seating, 10 per cent off Makos apparel at Stirling Sports in Nelson and Richmond, entry into the Makos Supporters Club competition, drawn at the post-match function, plus much more. Tickets to all five home games are on sale now so head online to the Makos website at www. makos.co.nz to grab your tickets today, or purchase them at the usual outlets. With their past successes buoying them on and with your support, 2017 could be the year the Tasman Makos take home the silverware. Finz up, for the mighty Makos.

Not ready for the building inspector? Cancel early, no fee It's important to us to deliver a timely and efficient building inspection service. We know it’s always a bit of a juggle to everything to line up at the right time for the inspection. In recent months, we have had an increase in the number of instances where the job is not ready when the inspector arrives on site. This isn’t efficient use of our resources and it is causing frustration with other industry partners who miss out on an inspection booking for that day. We cannot emphasise enough the need to be certain that you will be good to go on the day - so we're introducing an option to cancel early without incurring any extra cost. Cancel by 2.00 pm the day before the booking - no charge From 1 August 2017 you can cancel an inspection booking if you are not ready, until 2.00 pm the day before, without incurring any fees. Cancellation after 2.00 pm will incur a cancellation fee of $150. Any inspection we encounter not ready at the time of inspection will result in a failed inspection and will incur the standard $150 re-inspection fee.

GENERAL AUCTION to be held on

In order to avoid the likelihood of overcrowding, the Waimea College Board of Trustees has an approved enrolment scheme in place. Under this scheme, students will be enrolled if they live within the home zone described below.

sales@waimeaweekly.co.nz

We’ll get you moving

Important Information 2018 Enrolment Scheme

Start from where Wills Road meets the Inland Highway. Draw a line from this intersection to the intersection of Marriages Road and the Coastal Highway and on to the sea. Follow south-east along the coast to include Rabbit Island, re-joining at Saxton Road. Extend the line of Saxton Road to the south-east to meet a line running from Clover Knob to Gordons Knob and north from Gordons Knob to Spooners Saddle on Highway 6. From there, in a straight line to the top of the Rosedale Saddle, then to the south-western end of Wills Road and along Wills Road to where it meets the Inland Highway.

Note: Addresses in Wills Road would be deemed to be in the Waimea College zone as defined by the line drawn between Gordons Knob and the Coastal Highway on the map provided.

The enrolment of out of zone students is governed by the provisions of the Education Act 1989. The enrolment scheme, which includes a precise description of the home zone, may be viewed at the school office and will be included with the College’s enrolment form. The College believes there will be space for some students who live out of the home zone. Enrolments must be received at the College by 25 August 2017. A ballot will be held for out of zone applicants on 8 September 2017. Scott Haines Principal
