Richard Kempthorne has won a third term as Tasman’s mayor, fending off a strong challenge from Richmond councillor Kit Maling. Richard won 6499 of the votes to Kit’s 5723, securing three more years as the mayor. In Richmond two new councillors were elected, Mark Greening and Michael Higgins. SEE PAGE 3

The building was shaking, customers were fleeing out the door and a jackhammer crashed through the wall, but trade still continued at thepacific.net and the Hospice Shop – two Queen St retailers situated next to a demolition zone. “Patient” was the word one Network Tasman spokesperson described the remaining tenants left in its Queen St building which is now due to be renovated and structurally upgraded, just days after the 76 year old building next door was deconstructed. The renovations will not be completed until February next year, as it needs to be re-clad, re-glazed, and “generally tidied up”. The spokesperson says the two tenants – thepacific. net and the Hospice Shop – will continue to trade throughout the process, as they have done while the building next door was pulled down. “They’ve been very patient. A jackhammer managed to puncture a hole in the wall and you can imagine what that felt like while we were trying to work,” she says. “Customers didn’t feel very safe.” Because the building was coming down next door, Sue says some customers had thought her business was closed, when it had in fact been open right throughout the process. Now that the front of the building was to be re-clad, she admits they will lose their “visibility” and that might also give customers the impression that business was closed. “How it’s going to work I don’t know.
