Two winners, 100,000 entries Simon Bloomberg Appleby’s Jim Matthews has been buying his petrol and “the occasional sneaky pie and sausage roll” from Waimea Motors for years, but this month he made a purchase that he will never forget. Jim, who owns the popular Richmond bike shop Village Cycles, won the top prize of $5000 cash in this year’s Shop ‘n’ Win promotion after buying petrol and filling out his entry form at Waimea Motors. Jim’s big win was also a bonus for Waimea Motors manager Barry Milne who received $2000 for submitting the winning entry. A record 98,000 entries were received for this year’s Shop ‘n Win promotion which was run by the Waimea Weekly and Richmond Mall, up on last year’s 75,000. Six weekly prizes of $500 of Richmond Mall vouchers were also handed out leading up to last Friday’s final draw for the top prize of $5000. “I’ve been buying petrol here forever and I must have put in half a dozen Shop ‘n’ Win entries here over the last month,” Jim says. “But I was really surprised to win - I think the only thing I’ve ever won like that was a $100 when I brought a raffle ticket off some kids and that was over 20 years ago.” Jim has been getting “plenty of suggestions from the boys at the shop” about how to spend the $5000, but says he and his wife Sue will probably put it towards their children’s education fund. However, Barry says he’ll be sharing

He estimates that Waimea Motors’ customers filled in 800 to 1000 entries each week during the six-week promotion. Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page says he’s delighted Jim won the prize.

“Jim and Sue have done so much for the community” through their own shop,” Steve says. The big prize was drawn under the at the Richmond police station last Friday and Waimea Weekly advertising manager Sue Davies says it signalled the end of their biggest Shop ‘n’ Win yet.

“It’s been amazing and we’d like to thank all the retailers who took part and everyone who filled out an entry form. It will definitely be back next year, it’s just too big now to stop it!” All the shops in the Richmond Mall and 32 around Richmond participated in the promotion which was in its ninth year.

“Surrounded with grandchildren, I think we’re going to have it at lunch time and we’re going to have six grandchildren out of ten.”

“I’m having a special family Christmas Day this year. We normally don’t buy presents for the older ones but I’m going to do it this year.”

“We’re going over to see my son in Blenheim. We’ll be having dinner over there because he’s working the following day, it will be a round trip.”

“Oh, really exciting, my son, his wife and two little boys are coming from Australia, so we’re going to pick them up this week.”

Business donates toys to charity Water restrictions remain Big Brothers Big Sisters received a timely gift on Monday when staff at Harvey World Travel Richmond handed over a trolley full of Christmas presents for some of the young people being mentored in Nelson and Tasman. Harvey World Travel’s Nick Tilly says they wanted to do something “meaningful” this Christmas so, instead of putting up a Christmas tree, they rolled a supermarket trolley into their office and put up a poster asking people to donate for presents for Big Brothers Big Sisters. He says their business is already a sponsor of the group “who do a great job” so they had no problem deciding who the recipients should be. On Monday, Nick and Tim Dunnill and their staff handed over the presents to Big Brother Big Sisters Nelson programme director Rachel Saunders who

Nick says the presents were donated by many of their clients as well as staff and “some complete strangers”. “We had one lady come in on

“There was a lift in the Waimea River but little reaction in the groundwater levels. With little, if any, rain forecast for the next 14 days we are taking a cautious approach - the need to conserve is still very real if we are to get through summer without further rationing.” The ban on watering lawns remains in force in Richmond, Mapua, Ruby Bay, Hope, Brightwater and Wakefield and their rural extensions. However, hand-held hosing can occur on odd and even days corresponding to the house street number to water productive gardens only. Customers on the 88 Valley Rural water scheme, Redwoods Rural water scheme and the Dovedale Rural water schemes are required to conserve water with hosing restricted to late evening on odd and even days corresponding to the rural number to water productive gardens only.

Rachel says they presently have over 150 young people matched with mentors in Nelson with a waiting list of 60 children. Information on becoming a mentor is at bigbrothersbigsisters.org.nz

The weekend’s rain was not enough to lift water restrictions with the Tasman District Council’s Dry Weather Task Force deciding to maintain stage two water rationing on the Waimea Plains. Task Force convenor Dennis BushKing announced on Tuesday that stage two rationing, which enforces a 35 per cent cut in consented water takes, will continue for permit holders in the Reservoir, Waimea West, Upper Confined, Delta, Upper Catchment and Golden Hills zones. Stage one rationing (a 20 per cent cut in consented water takes) will continue for permit holders in the Lower Confined and Hope Aquifer zones. “The weekend rain was welcome but not enough to lift the current restrictions,” Dennis says. “Rainfall varied across the Waimea Plains from 12mm to 19mm.

A little bit of water wasn’t going to stop the people of Brightwater over the weekend. The annual Carols by Glo-Lite at Snowden’s Bush was ambushed by heavy rain on Saturday, so organisers moved the event to the Brightwater Hall. Over 100 people brought their picnic baskets and blankets and crammed into the hall, filling it with food, families, tinsel, music, carols and a wee visit from Santa. Brightwater School student Rihanna Churchill was on stage with the school choir and decked out with glo-sticks. “I really liked dancing and singing on the stage, my favourite part was when we sang ‘One Call Away’.” Local Kay Stratford has been coming to the event with her grandchildren for years. “It’s a great night, it really makes you feel like it’s Christmas,” says CAROLS BY GLO-LITE: Brightwater's Kay Stratford with Kay. her granddaughter Bella Stratford, 6. In first place is Blenheim with 2519 hours of sunshine, Whakatane comes in second with 2476 and Lake Tekapo is ranked fourth with 2423 hours. Southern Link tops MP survey Nelsonians want the Southern Link to proceed, are against raising the country’s refugee quota and support GST being added to music and films bought online. That’s according to Nick Smith’s annual survey, which was only completed by 712 people. The results of Nelson MP’s annual residents’ survey showed the Southern Link project was a clear favourite when asked what they thought Nelson needed to be more attractive and competitive with other regions. “I am not hugely surprised by this because it tallies with what I regularly hear during Nick Smith. my constituency work,’’ Nick says. The survey also showed that 68 per cent opposed increasing the refugee quota. Nick says he was surprised by the large number of people who opposed raising the quota. “It’s hard not to be moved by those heartbreaking pictures we’re seeing of people fleeing the atrocities in their homeland but the results and comments I received on my survey tell me that Nelsonians are wanting the Government to take a measured approach on this.” Other findings were that 71 per cent supported the establishment of a publicly-funded Fisheries Museum and Marine Education Centre in Nelson and 68 per cent support GST being added to all music, films and other products purchased internationally via the internet. Nick says the results will help “guide” him over the next year in Parliament around the Cabinet table.’’ The survey covered the Nelson electorate which includes Richmond, Brightwater and Appleby.

Zaatari Refugees

Hi, my name is Caleb, I am a ten year old child at Hope School and I want to help change the world. My school has a group called Thinkers Group. We took tests and some of us got in. Our teacher Mrs Scott takes the group. Our subject this year is to be a hero. I chose the Zaatari refuges because I was at the Tasman library and I was in an oclas rift (google it) and I saw a 360 view documentary on the Zaatari refugees. Im saving up to go to Zaatari refugee camp. So please donate. To learn more or donate go to:

Community groups give b Simon Bloomberg Churches, charities, businesses and schools around the Tasman district are doing their best to “put the Christ back into Christmas” by organising dinners, food parcels, presents and parties to help everyone enjoy the festive season. KMart Richmond and the Salvation Army have been working together to collect gifts for their annual Wishing Tree Appeal. Wishing Tree is the biggest Christmas appeal in New Zealand and Richmond store manager Camrin Holmes is hoping to collect 2000 gifts for the NelsonTasman region this year. St Vincent de Paul has also been getting into the Christmas spirit, collecting food items for Christmas Hampers to be distributed to 20 Richmond families. Students from St Paul’s School and Garin College, the Richmond Catholic Church, Pak ‘n Save, Proper Crisps, Curves Gym, Convent Girls Past Pupils Association and the Warehouse all helped out by supplying items for the hampers. And on Sunday, it was Grace Church’s turn to give something to the community holding its fifth Kids Community Christmas Party at the Headingly Centre on Sunday. The free party featured rides, food, a lolly scramble and games and a cafe for parents and attracted about 200 to 300 families. “We wanted to put Christ back into Christmas and help people to remember the real meaning of Christmas,” Grace Church’s Children, Youth and Young Families pastor Brett Hitchens says. “So we organise the Kids Christmas Party - this is our gift to the Richmond community.” Brett says the best thing about the party is that

it is for everyone, not just church members, and is totally free. “Churches sometimes get accused of looking after their own but this party is for everyone. And it’s totally free - there are a lot of events that have free entry but once you go in the parents get fleeced.” Brett says Grace Church is just one of many churches, charities and businesses that are working hard to help Tasman residents enjoy Christmas. “There are a lot of people doing good work and we are all on the same team,” he says. And many of the groups on that team will be joining forces to present the next Christmas gift to the community, the Holy Trinity Anglican Church’s Christmas Day dinner on the Hill. The dinner is organised by Holy Trinity Anglican Church with help from Teapot Valley, St Vincent de Paul and many other churches around Richmond, as well as the Mayors Fund. “We think it’s really important to [have this dinner] on Christmas Day, because Christmas Day is when people can feel the most alone,” says Holy Trinity Church’s Susan Gill. “One version [of the bible] says Jesus was born into the neighbourhood, so he really cares about community and we really care about our community too. We’re part of the community and the community gives lots to us, so it’s an opportunity to give back.” The Christmas dinner is being held in the Richmond Primary School Hall on Christmas Day starting at midday. Free tickets can be obtained from the Richmond Mall and Holy Trinity Church at 27 Dorset St. Koha entry and no alcohol permitted.

While the majority of the funding came from the Canterbury Community Trust (now Rata Foundation), smaller grants were also received from the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board and the Tasman District Council. “The old arena was smaller than we required,” says committee member Jolene Rushbrooke. “It had lots of rocks in it, the surface wasn’t very good and it used to pond so people didn’t like using it, so it was a bit of a waste of time having it.” Construction on the arena began in May this year and was completed in six weeks, officially opening in

August at a total cost of around $130,000. As well as an extension, the arena has been resurfaced to 75mm and fenced appropriately, creating an all-purpose arena with the ability to serve each equestrian discipline that uses the facility. Jolene says the committee greatly appreciates the grants it has received, as well as the work done by Chambers and Jackett, allowing them to complete the project quickly, and the additional funding efforts from the local community and users of the park. The Rough Island Equestrian Park is open seven days a week for public use and is currently home to five equestrian groups, Nelson Western Riding Club, Nelson Dressage Group, Nelson Bays Pony Club, Nelson Riding Club and Waimea Pony Club.

The fun run and walk, hosted by Nelson Events, is a charity day that sees all proceeds going to the Nelson branch of the Heart Foundation. Charity shops sick of bad clothing: Yes, after the weekend it does look like people have just chucked their rubbish out. Donna Jan. Disgraceful, I donate regularly and always ensure that clothing has been washed and other stuff is in good condition, there are some low lifes out there, that’s for sure. Brenda Kenny. Vandals hit Nayland Pools, then skite on Facebook: I think, if they are stupid enough to a); do this and then b); post about it on their social media, then it is more than fitting that is the way they were caught. Well done, Nayland Pool staff, for getting it out there via Facebook to catch them. I, for one, love that! Keryn Sheppard.

Congrats Denise, we love you at Tapawera, hope you stay. Tarsh Newport. Go you... know you will make a fabulous teacher!!! Ann Baker. I’m 47 and still studying - have to do it now because apparently I will be too old and lose Studylink supports. Yolande Jeffares. Flag option revealed, do you like it? No, I would not, keep the one we have. Colin Appleton. Too right, I love it. When we invade Australia at least we will know who is who!! All you guys that hate it, get your head out of the sand. Nup, if there is going to be a change then we should still use the flag with red in the corner, in keeping with the union jack in red, white and the blue. Think of the gillizons it will cost to change our drivers licenses. Annitta Hodgkinson.

Seeing people in the local shops is awesome. It’s a shame rent is high. Andrea Grocott. Wow, sounds like a great way to lose more customers. Move with the times or get left behind. Setting up your online store should have been done years ago. Then again, if prices are not competitive, clearly people will shop elsewhere. Personally, I don’t buy clothes or shoes online. Would also prefer to buy local. But if someone was going to charge me “fitting” I would be sure to not buy from that store. They would also lose recommendations from genuine customers like me. If a business does not have a strong online presence, chances are I won’t shop there because I like to look from my couch then go into the appropriate shop. Mat Krahagen.

Volunteers prepare for Mayors' dinner Kate Russell While most people will be spending Christmas day with their family, one Stoke couple will be spending it preparing Christmas dinner for an anticipated 200 senior citizens. Alison and Malcolm Ross have been volunteers for the annual Mayors’ Christmas Dinner for the past two years and say it’s a “very rewarding” way to spend the day. The community dinner, which is held at the Nelson College Dining Hall, is for senior citizens who would otherwise be spending Christmas alone. Alison says it’s something she and Malcolm just got “drawn into”. “I went along to a Rotary meeting about two years ago and they were asking for volunteers for the dinner. I thought it would be quite good to do that, so I called up to see what I could do.” She says councillor Brian McGurk, who organises the dinner, was very happy to hear from her and they then took on the massive task of buying the Christmas gifts – all 200 of them – which they chip away at over November. They are then passed on to another volunteer who wraps them. “We start in early November,” she says. “There’s a lot to organise.”

Alison says she keeps her eye on gifts throughout November stocking up on good quality items such as shampoo, hankies, socks, jewellery, hand washes, shower gels, chocolates and biscuits. The couple are also in charge of ringing around businesses for food donations and discounts, and Alison says the response this year has been great. Berries, trifle sponges, salmon and vegetables – just to name a few – are all being donated by local businesses. Weekly They have also organised extra decorations for the hall and a “fun” Alison Ross is preparing for another Christmas volunteering at the MayYour Community Father Christmas. ors' Christmas dinner. Photo: Kate Russell. Newspaper Christmas Eve will be spent preparing food, and then it will be “all hands on deck” on Christmas Day. Alison says last year she was really thrown in the deep end in the kitchen. “The chef didn’t show up on Christmas Eve to prepare the food, • Dripline • Irrigation Controllers • Irrigation Design & Sales but I took control and made sure all 30 chickens were cooked and ready for the next day.”

Just a thought... Don’t let the sun go down on me. Elton John dedicated his hit song from the 1970s to Jonah Lomu at his recent Wellington concert. So, why a song about someone who is reflecting on having helped someone and then is rejected by them? May be just because it was a such a hit, much like Jonah was? Maybe. As 2015 draws to an end and we reflect on a year that was, or a year that might have been, we all have different feelings. Disappointment, abandonment, fear, helplessness, bitterness, hurt, frustration, sadness, anger are the all too common ones but many will reflect with joy, happiness, hope,

expectation and love. All feelings and emotions are great for without them we’d all be lemmings doing the same expressionless activities day Dave Harris, Christians in day out. If we Against Povdidn’t have sad feelerty ings how would we know we’re happy? Frustration can mean we have goals and aspirations yet to be fulfilled. For those that know my God know him as a God of love and grace (giv-

ing to others whether they deserve it or not). Oh, but he can be angry too but as he revealed to Paul over 2000 years ago and Paul wrote in a letter to the people of Ephesia. ‘Be angry and do not sin; don’t let the sun go down on you while you’re angry and don’t let Satan get a foothold…’ So as we reflect on a world which now seems to be full of anger and hatred and prepare for our annual setting of New Year’s resolutions, may we consider this verse ‘don’t let the sun go down on you while you’re angry and don’t let Satan get a foothold’ and try singing another oldie, What the world needs now is love sweet love.

Nippers tear up beach for club champs Putting their training into action, the Nippers took to the beach on Sunday for some surf sport competition. The day marked the first round of their Nipper Club Champs, with a further three rounds to be held throughout the season. From 50, 70 and 90 metre beach sprints, to beach flags, swimming and board races, everyone’s points were accumulated so that the club champion for each age group can be determined at the end of the season. Run by the Nelson Surf

Life Saving Club, the Nippers programme is for children aged 7-13 and teaches them valuable skills including swimming and board skills, how to read the water and other water safety principles. The Nelson Nippers programme involves 50 children, with around 40 of them competing on Sunday. The skills they learn, including high knees running into the water and dolphin diving under the waves, are also used by the surf lifesaving team, where the Nippers can progress to.

Presidents Report I wish to thank the members who voted for me to be the Club Waimea president. Thank you all. As I have always said, the president is not an individual, he is part of a team. I am very lucky in having Kevin McKenzie as my vice president, a very active board, the club executive chaired by Ivan Reed and two very capable managers with separate expertise to oversee our club affairs, Mike Carter and Jan Phipps. We have freshened up the gambling lounge, rearranged the machine locations and have commenced upgrading the out-of-date machines with extra jackpots, so enjoy, remembering your limitations regarding gambling please. The restaurant is performing very well again thanks to Phil’s hard work and I am very pleased with the high usage of our conference rooms and the hall as I believe we have the best facilities to host

any group. The caravan park continues to get upgrades as we can afford and I thank all the occupants for taking ownership in the park regarding presentation of your homes and thank you all for your support and care of each other during the recent fatal incident, you did yourselves proud. Mike Carter and Jan Phipps thank you for your efforts again during the above incident, working as a team brings great rewards. Your club is performing well, however, we must grow and increase revenue to survive, so if any member has ideas, please see our managers, myself or any officer of our club. To each and everyone please have a very merry and safe Christmas and a happy New Year. Kindest regards, David J Birdling President

Club Waimea manager Jan Phipps and Santa with some of the children at this year’s Children’s Christmas Party.

Gerald Holland holding the catch of the weekend, a Trumpeter measuring over 900mm in length.

Fishing at Motunau The fishing section of Club Waimea once again ventured on their annual trip to Motunau, a small village in North Canterbury, which is a very nice holiday spot and very popular in the summertime. The section had the pick of the weather for this trip and were able to venture out to the fishing grounds on both days that we

were there. All ten people who went on this trip thoroughly enjoyed themselves and as you can see from the photo some nice fish were caught. The variety of fish species able to be caught in those waters includes Blue Cod, Groper, Red Cod and Trumpeter then of course on the way home a crayfish or two from the pots set earlier in the day.

Message from the managers As the managers of Club Waimea, we would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas, a happy New Year and a safe holiday period. Don’t hesitate to come and join us at Club Waimea on New Year’s Eve when there will be entertainment in the hall and the courtesy van will be running from 4pm until late. Phil’s Place will also be open for meals so come and enjoy the evening with your friends and family. Over

Christmas and into the New Year, the bar will be open on December 26 and 28 and January 1 and 4 from 3pm, while all other days will run to normal hours. Phil’s Place will be closed on December 26 and January 1. Also, we would like to give a special thanks to Field Florist who now supplies us with a lovely bunch of flowers each week. Kind regards, Mike and Jan.

Ladies from the Sioux Line Dance section celebrate the end of the year with a dinner at Club Waimea on November 27. The section will be taking a break over the holiday period and will be back in action in February. A new beginners class will also be up and running with the first session to be held on Wednesday, February 3, from 6pm, at Club Waimea. Don’t be afraid to give it a go, if club manager Jan and president Dave can get their line dance on, anyone can.

WHO ARE YOU KIDDING? It might sound like a joke, but when you catch a blue cod that’s too small and keep it, everyone loses out.

Blue Cod rule change

There are new fishery rules for the take of blue cod in Nelson and Marlborough effective from 20 December 2015. Make sure you are aware of the changes before you go fishing this summer. Check the blue cod rule changes at mpi.govt.nz, text ‘blue cod’ to 9889, or download the NZ fishing rules app. In association with The Blue Cod Management Group

A new material arts club has formed in Nelson, encompassing a bit of Judo, Karate, boxing and even street fighting. Fuji Ryu Jiu-Jitsu was founded last month and is operating out of the old Tahuna Town Hall on Tahunanui Drive. Instructor and founder Brett Grimwood says the club practises Japanese-based Jiu-Jitsu, which he says has no rules. “Everything goes. We pull on elements of karate aikido, judo everything, so it’s pretty cool. There are lots of breakouts so it’s more about using the person’s momentum against them, so size doesn’t matter.” Brett has previously been heavily involved in the Nelson Judo Club but says Japanese Jiu-Jitsu is his first love. “For me, it’s real life techniques. Size doesn’t matter and fitness level don’t matter, it’s real life stuff so someone gets you in a headlock. It teaches all aspects that if someone can get you, we can show you how to get out of it.” Japanese-based Jiu-Jitsu is not sport-based like Brazilian

Jiu-Jitsu and has a reputation for being a “hard” martial art because it covers all areas of fighting. “We teach everything, we teach stand up, so straight fist fighting, punching, escapes. So if someone gets you in a headlock what do you do? Or if someone pulls a knife what do you do? We are not all experts at only one thing, we’re good at them all.” But Brett says Japanese JiuJitsu is more reactive and quite flowing.

“It’s a gentle martial art despite what people tell you. It’s nice and gentle, no chucking someone over your shoulder and letting them go, it’s taking them to the ground, control and restraint, taking them out.” The club is offering a free trial for both kids and adults for the rest of December. Kids train from 6pm-7pm on Monday nights and adults are from 7pm-8:30pm, also on Mondays. For more information call Brett on 021 062 5417.

Lifestyle Block Farmers It is often said that we are not Lifestyle Block Farmers but “Life Sentence Block Holders,” but whatever way you look at it, you will only get out of it what you put in. You can make it as easy or as difficult as you please, but we should never forget the reason we chose this lifestyle in the first place. Our main responsibility is to look after the livestock that we run and that means adequate feed in all four seasons of the year. Now this can be difficult in the Nelson/Tasman area with our dry summers, when feed is hard to come by, especially if irrigation is not available. Another problem we commonly have is ‘how much is too much’ when it comes to purchasing machinery or equipment for these blocks. Do I need a fertiliser

spreader or my own spraying unit for these jobs, or do I employ someone to do it for me? Whatever decision you make will depend on your own personal circumstances. We have a number of options here at Fertilizer NZ with Lifestyle Mixes especially for small block holders that will give excellent grass growth and good healthy animals. We also have good clean IBC pods for water collection. Come and have a chat to us for some good old-fashioned advice on what option is best for you, your block, and your animals. Business Update. Tough track for mountainbikers Henry Jaine had to repel a challenge from Christchurch rider Mathew Waghorn and negotiate deteriorating track conditions before winning race six of the Nelson Mountainbike Club's crosscountry series held in the Codgers Mountainbike Park on Sunday. The two pacesetters raced clear at the start up Fireball Road before descending at top speed down Firball and Turners tracks to post the only two sub-18 minute laps of the day. Henry eventually managed to shake off Matt and handle a sudden rainstorm and slippery second lap to win the race and series . Master 1 rider Blenheim’s Sarnim Dean was next to leave the gravel road onto the steep single track ahead of the aggressive riding of Warren Burgess and Jake Stow. Zoe King, always a good climber, showed a clean pair of cleats to the rest of the women. Sandy Vincent was the second strongest female, closely followed by Brenda Clapp. Most classes had their own separate battles with Hannah Feely edging out Katie Roddis in senior women. Kiel Boynton relished the change in track conditions to keep clear of Joel Scott to win Masters 1 while Liv Bishop won the under-17 ahead of Emma Bateup. Derek Milne completed a series clean-sweep to take the Master 3 series while Warren Algie won the over 60 race and series. Henri Hufflett showed promise to negotiate the challenging course to win the under-15 race although Ari Scott had enough points to win the series.

SEA SWIM: The distance may have been longer but nothing else changed in Sunday’s sea swim with Thomas Heaton and Hayden Squance finishing one-two in the men’s race and the fastest woman Talya Harwood finishing third. Thomas, Hayden and Talya have been dominating the shorter races in the Port Nelson Sea Swim series on Thursday nights and continued that form in the first race of the Clements Windows and Doors Endurance series on Sunday. Thomas completed the 2km swim from Tahuna Beach to the Nelson Yacht Club in 24min 58sec with Hayden second in 26min 38sec and Talya third in 27min 48sec.

Waimea Get2Go team, from left, Jane Orbell (coach), Finn Mitchell, Cameron Jones, Maggie McLean, Kendall Shuker, Mac Karalus, Hamish Anderson, Keyle Brown, Emma Charles and Marcus Swain (coach) on Great Barrier Island.

Waimea wins national Get2Go final Simon Bloomberg Waimea College was almost undone by a knotty problem in the Get2Go national final but showed plenty of speed, determination and team work to fight back to win the year 9 and 10 teams challenge at the Hillary Outdoor Education Centre on Great Barrier Island. Waimea just edged out Whangarei Girls-Boys High by 27 points with Trident High in third a further 101 points behind in the six day final that ended last Friday. It was Waimea’s first win in the national final after finishing in the top five in the last five years. Waimea’s coaches Marcus Swain and Jane Orbell say consistency was the key to their win with the team performing well in all the challenges that included rock climbing, orienteering, kayaking, sailing, mountainbiking and problemsolving challenges. “Last year we had some big ups and some big downs but this year we consistently scored near the top and that’s

what counted,” Marcus says. “It was a special team effort - they all contributed to the win.” Marcus says the team was second, just one point behind Whangarei, after the first two days of team challenges before producing a remarkable comeback to win the first day of the expedition race on Wednesday to take the lead. “They needed to tie a reef knot around an instructor without using their hands before they could start the expedition race and couldn’t do it so they lost 30 minutes and started last. But they smashed the race - they kept passing teams and went on to win - that was the game breaker. “We were also streets ahead in the sailing challenge. We can thank Tim at the Nelson Yacht Club for that - he gave some lessons and that really helped.” Marcus says two of the team, Cameron Jones and Maggie McLean, were named in the Get2Go Dream Team named at the conclusion of the final. “Cameron’s fitness level was second-

to-none and Maggie was so tough. She broke her arms eight weeks before the final and still fronted up.” Maggie says the highlight was the first day of the expedition race when they went from last to first to take the lead. “We were getting really frustrated when we couldn’t tie the reef knot and had to watch all the other teams leaving. But we stayed positive and once we started we raced really hard. “It was really cool catching all the teams and we got really hyped once we got to the lead. But I think that effort caught up with us on the the second day - we were just surviving and hanging on - it was easily the toughest day.” Maggie says good team work and consistency were the keys to their win. “We have a great team and we scored well in all the challenges - we never duffed one.” The Waimea team is: Cameron, Maggie, Emma Charles, Finn Mitchell, Kendall Shuker, Hamish Anderson, Keyle Brown and Mac Karalus.

Q: I have been asked to be a

guarantor for my son’s first mortgage. Is there any real risk for me?

A: If a bank has asked for a guarantee, it may

indicate that they consider the loan to be risky. If you are a guarantor, you will be required to pay all the debt if your son fails to pay. Firstly, I recommend that you get independent legal advice. Guarantor agreements are complex and include important clauses that you should fully understand the meaning of. Common clauses include:  The guarantor’s assets (eg. a house) are used as security for the debt. If the debt is not paid, the bank can sell the guarantor’s assets to recover the money owed.  Guarantors are also liable for any future borrowing, such as penalties, interest or over-drafts in relation to the original debt or even new loans.  Guarantors may be called upon to immediately pay the outstanding debt in full.  Guarantors are not entitled to know anything about the lenders dealings with the bank, even if they are behind in their payments. If you decide to go ahead with the guarantee, ask your lawyer how you can minimise your risk. You could say ‘no’ to being a guarantor and consider other ways that you might help your son.

Merry Christmas While Christmas will always be about spending time with friends and family, our local churches this year are encouraging everyone to share some Christmas spirit with the local community, as well as the global community. Leading the way locally in their message of generosity and neighbourly support, Church on the Hill will be organising the third Christmas Day Dinner, with support from nearly every church in the Richmond area, as well as from Teapot Valley Christian Camp, St Vincent de Paul and the Mayor’s Fund. Many groups have also helped financially, as well as providing food, while others have provided support with volunteers

and with promotion. “We think it’s really important to have this dinner on Christmas Day because Christmas Day is when people can feel the most alone,” says Chairperson of the Richmond – Waimea Churches and Vicar of the ‘Church on the Hill’ Susan Gill. The idea originated from the community lunches that they run every two weeks and Susan says anyone is welcome to attend this year’s Christmas Dinner. It is not just for those who are less well-off and who find it too expensive to cook their own Christmas dinner, but for those who come for the company and are very happy to contribute. “One version [of the bible] says Jesus was born into the

neighbourhood, so He really cares about community and we really care about our community too. We’re part of the community and the community gives lots to us, so it’s an opportunity to give back,” says Susan. While the Christmas Day dinner is free, tickets do need to be obtained as organisers can only cater for around 130 people. Tickets are available from the Richmond Mall and anyone attending the dinner who wishes to make a donation is welcome to do so. We are all very aware of the massive global humanitarian crisis, with over 4 million people having fled from Syria alone into neighbouring countries, and so local

churches are contributing, in some cases their total offerings to such mission agencies as TEAR Fund and Barnabas Fund who are already providing food, clothing and shelter to refugees in camps in Jordan, Lebanon and Kurdistan. Susan hopes people will take some time to think about a charity group or organisation that stands out to them personally and make a vital donation towards a worthy cause. For anyone who would like to support proven agencies such as TEAR Fund or the Barnabas Fund donations can be made through any of the local churches or at: tearfund.org. nz or barnabasfund.org “As churches, we’re working more closely together than

we have before,” says Susan. In July an inter-church initiative called ‘Love in Action’ was held where a number of community projects were undertaken by Christians from various Richmond/Waimea churches, demonstrating God’s love and our love of our neighbours. “We believe that it’s important, not just in our own worship with combined services, but to be out there in the community showing people that we all worship the same God and that we’re not competing.” The combined churches of Richmond and Waimea wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and welcome the public to attend any of their services.
