Half of NZ sunscreens fail tests Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

As Richmond is officially recognised as New Zealand’s sunniest town with the most sunshine hours recorded in 2019, the results of Consumer NZ’s latest report on sunscreen safety will come as a shock and disappointment to local residents. The consumer watchdog has revealed that 50 per cent of sunscreen products they tested have failed to live up to their promised sun protection factor (SPF). Five of the products inspected provided a lower SPF than what was on the label. Out of those five, two also failed to meet the requirements for making a broad-spectrum protection claim with regards to cancercausing UVA and UVB rays. There is currently no mandatory sunscreen testing standard in New Zealand. And as retail sunscreen is still classified as a cosmetic, it means some products can easily slip through the safety net and not offer consumers the protection they believe they are buying. “This isn’t good enough for a country like ours with the highest rates of skin cancer and melanoma in the world,” says Cancer Society chief executive Lucy Elwood. “We’d like to see New Zealand introduce a regime similar to Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Act. That would reassure New Zealanders that standards for sunscreen meet the same

Half of NZ sunscreens fail tests FroM PAGE 1 requirements as medicines, as opposed to cosmetics. A mandatory sunscreen standard would mean all products sold here would meet reliable world standards.” Consumer NZ chief executive Jon Duffy says, “There’s no requirement for sunscreen manufacturers to regularly test their products. “In fact, we have the totally unacceptable situation that the sunscreen standard is voluntary, so sunscreens don’t have to be tested at all. But as with any product, manufacturers should be able to stand behind the claims they’re making on their label.” However, the difference in SPF results could come

from companies’ testing methods rather than an attempt to deliberately mislead customers, Consumer Healthcare Products executive director Scott Milne says. “The issue is not whether the standard is mandatory or whether the product should be treated as a medicine,” says Scott. “It is whether the testing methods used by manufacturers and consumer organisations are consistent throughout.” Consumer NZ said a number of the brands had relied on historic testing results from US sunscreen-testing facility AMA Laboratories to support their claims. But this lab faced charges in 2019 for falsifying test results over three decades

between 1987 and 2017, to which four of the staff pleaded guilty. Despite some products not meeting their full SPF50 promise, The Cancer Society are urging the public not to panic and chuck out their sunscreens. “Even if you have a sunscreen that didn’t meet its claim, the test results still showed all products provided high protection – even if it wasn’t the full SPF50,” Lucy says. “It would be a shame if consumers chose to throw out usable products that still provide some level of sun protection.” With another hot summer on the cards for our region, the results have come at just the right time. so stay safe with a hat, sunscreen and sunnies.

Waimea College students Toby Collett, Emma Fox, Bree Anderson, Nadia Cregeen and Moab Heynekamp were victorious in Wellington last week for the the Youth Enterprise Scheme national finals. They were part of 21 teams, out of an original 1000, that made it to the finals representing entrepreneurial talent from across the country. The Waimea College team of five pitched their card game ‘Pathways to Primary’ to the judges last Thursday and won one of 12 National Excellence Awards given out on the night. “It was fantastic for them to get to the finals, and winning the national excellence award was just icing on the cake,” says Waimea College business studies teacher Yvonne Daly. Their horticultural card game provides a tool for learning about the career options in the horticulture industry. The team won the Te Arahanga Primary Industries Award for the game and its positive impact on the primary sector.

Stoke also have two new e-bikes which the officers have already started using as part of their day-to-day proceedings.

Richmond Police have been given two new e-bikes to help patrol the streets, after a month-long trial was undertaken in four major cities across the country at the start of the year to see how effective they would be in modern-day policing. Given that Nelson Tasman has so many cycle trails and bike tracks, it was decided the region would benefit from their use. It’s thought that having officers on e-bikes gives them increased visibility and presence in the community and can help deter crime such as vehicle theft, burglary and

disorder. Biking is becoming a more common way of getting around with easy manoeuvrability through traffic, and e-bikes are an environmentally-friendly option. The main draw for the e-bikes is that they will enable officers to focus on distracted drivers who are texting or using cell phones, which is one of the main causes of accidents in the region, and also people not wearing seatbelts. “I’ll be patrolling on the e-bike over the summer now the schools have broken up,” says Richmond’s School Community Officer Constable Hamish Wybrow. “Being on an e-bike means we’ll be able to have a presence on cycle tracks, reserves,

Tyler Laing performing a hip hop dance move. He is one of the dancers in Richmond who is pleased that break-dancing has been added to the Olympic Games. Gemma Laing says it is a great way to get more boys into dance. Photo: Jenny Nicholson.

Break-dancing being part of the 2024 Olympic Games gives local dancers a huge new goal. Tyler Laing is eight years old and his current dream is to go to the world hip hop championships. Now he and other dancers his age will have something new to aspire to. “It’s really cool because dancing is in the Olympics and it has never been before,” says Tyler. Following the announcement last week that it would be an event in Paris 2024, local dance coach Gemma Laing has been inundated with calls from parents and schools. She thinks the inclusion is great and that it will raise the profile of break-dancing in New Zealand. “Break-dancing is hugely followed overseas, like cricket and rugby here,” she says. She also thinks it’s a good reflection on dance being a sport. Although it is also an art, Gemma feels the strength, fitness, training and athleticism required definitely place it in the field of sport. She hopes it will encourage more boys into dance. A committee is being developed to ensure that dancers are trained properly. This is doubly important to her, as her son Tyler is one of the dancers who may want to aim for the Olympics in years to come. “The young dancers will be able to think that in 12 years they could go to the Olympics,” says Gemma. She said New Zealand has break-dancers who should be selected go to the games. “New Zealand will do well in the Olympics,” says Gemma. The International Olympic Committee has included break-dancing in an effort to engage a younger audience.

Garin dux’s unbeatable academic year

Jenny Nicholson

Keriana Snodgrass is Garin College’s Dux for 2020. In reading her results, principal John Maguire said Keri, who was the college’s Maori leader, had received excellences in all subjects. “Being dux was one of my goals this year,” said Keri. She said she had worked hard this year, slotting in study around playing netball. “Netball is a passion,” said Keri. Keri has already had a lot of success in netball. In 2019 she was awarded Nelson Netball’s most valuable secondary school player and the

same year was selected for the under 17 Te Waipounamu Maori Netball Team. She said being Garin’s Maori leader was special, but hard. “I hated public speaking so it was a big challenge,” she said. Her experience with public speaking will come in handy if she realises her dream of working as a prosecutor. Keri will begin her law degree, along with a Bachelor of Arts, at the University of Canterbury next year. It will be a busy year as she will continue to play netball. While she dreams of playing netball at a high level, she also wants to have fun while Garin College principal John Maguire with 2020 Dux Keshe plays. riana Snodgrass. Photo: Jenny Nicholson.

Invasive weeds threaten Richmond waterways

The public are being urged to steer clear of two rapidlyspreading invasive plant sites at Hart Road and Jimmy Lee Creek, where water celery and Vietnamese parsley have taken over. The edible weeds will be getting sprayed with a herbicide that is approved for use over water from Monday 14 December, so the public are advised not to touch or pick them at all. Biosecurity Officer at Tasman District Council, Lindsay Barber, says this year’s mild winter has led to a huge

leased, so we need to destroy the spread along streams and storm water drains quickly.”

The weeds could have an adverse effect on both waterways and the environment. Water celery has the potential to block channels and increase sediment, as well as hindering growth of native plants. “The invasiveness of these weeds can reduce the habitat quality for insects and fish in our waterways, which is another big concern,” says David Stephenson, Team Leader at the council’s Stormwater and Waste Management department. It’s thought a spraying programme early next year will help to ease the problem.

Former teacher enlists pupil to help with children’s book Charles Anderson When former Nayland College teacher Geoff Gudsell needed to find an illustrator for his children’s book he looked no further than his former pupil. Ned Barraud was in Geoff ’s social studies class some 30 years ago and has since gone on to become a successful author and illustrator. “I had been playing around and sending rhymes to my grandkids, so I sat down and wrote some down,” says Geoff. Then he sent them to Ned to illustrate. The subject matter was inspired by Geoff ’s grandchild Theo who had been sending him updates of his Lego dinosaur projects. The results are Old T-Rex and Big Woolly Mammoth – which tell the tales of two of prehistory’s most curious beasts. “The rhyming stories in the two

books are both quirky as well as factual,” Geoff says. “I decided not to dumb-down the stories for the four-year-olds who have the stories read to them, as I believe that even at that age they are capable of coping with terms such as the Pleistocene and Cretaceous.” The biggest supporters are his grandkids, who also make an appearance in the book alongside the prehistoric creatures. “The results speak for themselves, as you see the characters and personalities of these famous creatures develop throughout each book.” The Waimea Weekly is giving away a copy each of Old T-Rex and Big Woolly Mammoth. Email editorial@waimeaweekly. co.nz with why you would like a copy to enter the draw. The books can also be found in Paper Plus, Page and Blackmore and Volume.

Washbourn fun this weekend Jo Kent

Festive fun at last year’s carol concert. Photo: Supplied.

Get that festive feeling at the Carols by Candlelight concert at Washbourn Gardens this Sunday. Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy the pre-show entertainment, which kicks off at 6pm with live music from Gerry and the Actrix. Kids will love the face painting and giant bubble display, with a special visit from Santa topping things off. Dance, eat or sit back and enjoy the

music with carols starting at 8pm. Mayor Tim King will say a few words to the crowd before introducing the show. If you want to join in with the singing, booklets with the song lyrics will be available at the gate and candles can be purchased with a gold coin donation if you don’t bring your own. All funds collected on the day will be going to New Zealand Riding for the Disabled. Wet weather venue is the Motueka Memorial Hall.

Jacqui Rawson

‘It’s all in the bag’ 25 November 2020 Following the story in Waimea Weekly supporting the It’s in the Bag campaign, which called for donations of bags full of essentials to distribute to women’s refuges across the region, the charity has revealed they received overwhelming support from the community this year. “We managed to give 90 bags to Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge and 10 bags to an Oranga Tamariki mothers group as well,” says Michelle Barnes from the charity. “That’s a huge increase on last year’s 17 bags! We are super grateful to everyone who took the time to give to these deserving women and wish everyone the best 2021.” 2 December 2020 ‘The day Santa came to town’ The people were asked to vote online for their favourite float at the Richmond Pak’n’Save Santa Parade and that’s exactly what they did. The votes have been counted and we can reveal the winner of the People’s Choice Award 2020 is the Lift N Shift Speedway Junior Members crew. They did a fantastic job of decorating their float with actual speedway cars and giving the spectators a chance to see them up close. For some of the little ones, it was the first time they had taken part in the parade. Also, congratulations to Elizabeth Biddle, who won the voter’s prize of $100. Well done everyone who took part in the parade and to those who voted online.

Volunteer day at SPCA a success

It was all hands on deck at the SPCA Nelson when the staff from the Richmond branch of Crombie Lockwood Insurance Brokers spent the morning volunteering for the charity. Jen Adams, who organised the event, says, “We have a day each year where the staff go and help out a charity. Our company loves giving back to the local community and we have fun doing it.” Jobs undertaken were staining the

deck, painting, weeding, valeting cars and doing a general tidy up outside. The staff at the charity prioritise the care of animals over any odd jobs which need doing, so the offer of help was gratefully received. SPCA team leader, Trudi Black, says, “It was amazing of them to help do the jobs we so desperately needed done. They even brought morning tea and shared it with our staff. What a lovely bunch!”

Just a thought... Ross Ferguson Richmond Community Church Now here’s something for you to think about and it’s not about Covid or Christmas! It’s about life and breath! The origin of life is one of the great mysteries in the universe and breathing is both a mystery and a miracle! We all know that we need to breathe to live and yet, because it is automatic we can very easily just take it for granted. Did you know that every day we

take about 28,000 breaths, or ten million each year, or if we live beyond ninety that’s over a billion! If we stop breathing for more than two minutes most of us would pass out, or if it is more than five to six minutes our brain stops functioning and then our body shuts down! Someone said that ‘Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away’ and for me there is something I have discovered that is quite pro-

found and insightful about life and breath, that I consider to be breathtaking! From the opening chapters of the bible there is beautiful imagery that points to the reality that God is the ‘Life-giver’ and that out of chaos and darkness the Spirit of God, or the BREATH of God gently moved and he then created. Then further on he BREATHED into man and he became a living being. This is a theme that is con-

sistent throughout scripture, that God himself gives life and breath to everything. One of the secrets to healthy living is to acknowledge that every breath is a gift and to learn to breathe well can help you to live well, to relax and reduce stress, anxiety and fear. Meditation, contemplation and learning to eliminate any negative, judgmental thoughts, attitudes and just to be still and breathe

deeply is refreshing and healing. Even more amazing is the name that is given to God in the ancient writings is ‘YHWH’ (pronounced Yah-weh), which are the four consonants of the Hebrew language for the name for God, which is considered so sacred that it should not be spoken, but only breathed! That means that the name of God is the sound of our breathing. That to me is “Wow!” Think about it, from our very first breath to our last we are actually saying the name of God.

The Champion Copper Mine Marg Farrelly Champion Road in Richmond follows the formation of a pack track leading to the Champion copper mine, which was in operation in early 1980s. The journey to the mine, which was situated in Aniseed Valley, took about three hours and the track provided a direct way for miners to get to town for a weekend. The discovery of an outcrop of copper ore in the upper Aniseed Valley by a goat hunter in 1881 led to the development of an industry that saw a flurry of activity, both on the ground and in the share market. The Roding River Copper Mining Prospecting Company, composed of a group of shareholders, resolved to lease the ground where prospecting had been occurring. The intention of this company was to prove the richness of the lode by sinking and driving shafts, to be followed by the formation of a large company for the purpose of working the mine. The explorations revealed ore richer than had been discovered at the surface. The lode was christened “the Champion.” Negotiations in June 1882 were pending for the working of the Champion Copper mine. The Champion Company erected works on a scale of considerable magnitude. The ore was packed down to Richmond in bags, three bags to each horse, which were

Yvonne West The inclement spring and summer weather has not dampened the enthusiasm of our runners and walkers at the regular races in the Summer Running Programme: the Eddyline and Honest Lawyer 5km races and the Saturday pub runs. It has been pleasing to see a large number of new runners experiencing and enjoying the variety of courses from the Eddyline Pizzeria each Wednesday. The last Wednesday for 2020 on the 23rd December will have a special Christmas theme with prizes for all participants. Last Saturday’s pub run was the iconic 7km ‘Gut Buster’, starting at the Cathedral steps with runners and walkers following a three lap circuit up around

Fairfield Park and back to the Cathedral. With the strong warm wind that afternoon, the race certainly lived up to its name for the more than 50 people who took on the challenge. Having just returned from running well in the 60km Kepler Challenge the prvious Saturday, Curtis Moore showed the strength of his running by coming home first in a very creditable time of 27.21mins. Colette Read was the fastest woman in 33.28mins, with Alan West the fastest walker in 47.36mins and Shirley Beggs the first woman walker home in 51.32mins. The next highlight of the Summer Running Programme is the very popular New Year’s Day run from Monaco; a great way to start the New Year.

‘Study local’: You don’t have to leave to get a degree with NMIT NMIT degree students love that they can get a world-class tertiary education right here in Te Tau Ihu. There are many benefits to getting a Bachelor’s degree at NMIT, such as smaller class sizes, attentive tutors, hands-on learning, industry experience, and flexible part-time and online study options. Not to mention the state-of-the-art facilities, including the purpose-built Creative Industries building, the exercise science and physiology lab, and an onsite vineyard and winery. You don’t have to leave the region, get an expensive flat in a big city, and attend university to have a life-changing study experience. Instead, you can “study local” at NMIT. NMIT currently offers 10 Bachelorlevel programmes in a range of study areas, including Commerce, Arts and Media, Information Technology, Nursing, Viticulture and Winemaking, Aquaculture and Marine Conservation and more. Our unique blended model of classroom learning and industry experience prepares our graduates to be work- and world-ready.

Bachelor of Arts and Media student Georgia Elliston says she was attracted to NMIT by the smaller class sizes and the prospect of more one-on-one support and feedback from tutors. She also wanted to study locally in Nelson. “Getting to have time with tutors and getting to know my classmates, it’s a really great vibe. The tutors are almost like mentors, based on the one-on-one time they dedicate,” she says. Bachelor of IT student Corrina Busby had the opportunity to do work experience at a local software company while studying, which has led to her being offered an internship when she graduates. “I feel like I know a lot more about working in industry just by having the opportunity to do the placement.” Choosing to study local could be the best decision you make for your future and help you to launch into your career on the front foot.

Celebrating 5 years in business

67 Ellis St, Brightwater 03 542 3878 www.kellycountry.co.nz Local man Shane Kelly had a vision. He had one hobby that he was passionate about and loved being involved with, and that was firearms. He has always had a huge passion for them and the hunting community. So, the target he set was to build and run the best gunshop in the area and he reckons he’s nearly achieved it. With his building background, he has created the perfect speciality gunshop which includes a modern and safe indoor 25-metre range, plenty of space in the retail part of the shop and plenty of shelves and racks to hold the huge selection of firearms and ammo in a way that is relaxed and easy to view. He has also called on his military service in East Timor to add some atmosphere into the shop. It also has the latest in security and double entrance safety into the shop. Plenty of parking is also available right out front. As Shane puts it, “we are the last independent gun shop in the top of the South Island”. “New manager Dean Baigent also brings a wealth of experience, with 25 years serving in the military and then 15 years as a Field Office director for various government organisations. So, he brings a wealth of outdoor

It’s a relaxed but engaging environment and we are all happy to pass on our knowledge”. Dean says he is keen to look after not only the hunter but also the sporting shooter and

the collector. Dean wants the market to know that they are also keen on tradeins and are happy to buy outright. “We will endeavour to always pay a fair price,” says Dean. “If you have a gun that you want to trade or sell, bring it in and we will price it for you” He says this

also applies to any new firearms in the shop of which there is a huge range. And Dean want to ensure that customers know that Kelly Country has access to most major gun and accessory manufacturers. “Obviously, we can’t stock everything, at best it’s an accurate

guess, but we will source any gun from anywhere for the serious buyer” he says. With over 250 firearms in stock, new and used, there is plenty to choose from. He is particularly proud of the range of shotguns, both new and used. “What other shop has 2 older Browning A5’s in stock” he

Celebrating 5 years in business grinned. They stock Beretta and Benelli as first choice for their shotgun range. They now have on the shelves new guns from Sako, Victrix, Benelli, Beretta and Tikka, just to name a few, and are stockist of Leupold optics as well as Steiner. They favour the highquality Spika range of clothing with a broad selection to back that up and also stock Ridgeline. The range of accessories is also large with cleaning kits, rods and brushes, right thru to specialised lubricants for the firearms. available in 8,12, and 16. They also have a range of safes especially for handguns and other rifles a collector may have. The big thing about these safes is they are finished so well and are almost a piece of furniture! Dean has put on the floor a couple of smaller safes that can be used for handguns but can be used to store a family’s valuables and documents in safely. Another interesting part of the shop are the handguns and the large range of knives, including custom knives from some of New Zealand’s best custom makers. The handguns, although locked, are easy to see and make for interesting viewing for those who have little to do with them.

We trust and recommend Spika gun safes. The finish is fantastic, they are well made and functional and do not look out of place in a family home. Also great for those personal items, wills passports etc. And they don’t look like a old pirates treasure chest, these are well finished and strong. All safes are approved for purpose and built to withstand fire. Please ask for details. We think these are the best quality on the market. From 4 to 32 gun capacity.

Pistol or Home valuables $550 12 Gun restricted safe $930 15 Gun standard safe $879 Spika Vest Tough and warm. These are well priced and you’re getting some real bang for buck here!

Old Tribe - Winners, trophy accepted by Matt Gibb

Rugby section prize giving This was held on Sunday 6 December, 3pm at the Club, and was attended by some 40 odd punters, who had participated in the Mitre 10 Cup picking competition. There were prizes for the top 3 overall: Old Tribe, Puzzeled, and Mr R Sole. The Ladies Winner was

awarded to Purple Rose, Last Place went to Noel, and the Stirrers Trophy was awarded Rembrandt (aka Lewis Della Bosca). There was a lot of laughter, some nibbles, and a few well-earned bevvies. Roll on next year’s competition.

Manager’s Snippett Wayne Williams There you go, another year just about over, and what a year it has been. The unimaginable Covid events, the end of my 4th year as Manager of the Club, many enjoyable times with family and friends, Sunday lunches

at Harry’s with my wonderful partner, another birthday, a first grandchild, and another maybe before you read this short article, so definitely a wide array of happenings. On the Club scene, we have recovered extremely well after a two-month total closure, and with the level of activity that

we have experienced over the festive build-up, we continue to gather momentum and new members. The future looks great. That’s it for now. Have an awesome Xmas. Let’s break in the new year in high spirits, and make 2021 a year to really remember!

Robb steals the stampede show Jody Scott

Speedway Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The PTS Super Stock Stampede at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway had a festive feel about it as things wound up before Christmas. The meeting was a mix of old and new as the latest stable of machinery shared the night with the classics of yesteryear. The super stock class has been the backbone of the club and, while numbers have been low over the last few seasons, they still command an audience. The “Stampede” was designed as an annual event to bring in visiting drivers for a weekend of racing, hopefully next year it will over two nights if the consent process is successful. The banter after racing is almost as enjoyable for some of the regular visitors to the track. Harley Robb had won the South Island title the previous week in Christchurch and his golden run of form continued when he won the feature race to end the night’s festivities, claiming the ‘Stampede’ win. It was young gun Cody Hodge, fresh out of the youth ministocks who had an inspired run to finished second behind Robb, with locals Alex Hill third and Brett Nicholls fourth.

Harley Robb was the big winner at the PTS Super Stock Stampede at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. Photo: Rebecca Mailing. The classic stock cars made a welcome return after a few years away, they were a popular sight in the pits with several chassis recently recovered on display. There is hope that a few more drivers will turn up when they return in January, it was a great combination with the Stampede. The youth ministocks were racing as mystery pairs, their partners not known until after the final race. It was an early trial before the New Zealand Grand Prix here later in the year. The production saloon teams race against Blenheim went the way of the home team while Ian Burson picked up the Club Champion-

Ashton Osborne was the first driver to go under 16 seconds in a ministock. I wasn’t able to get out on the water since the start of the month but until then the snapper fishing appeared to be unusually slow for the time of the year. I’ve heard a few reports of catches picking up over the last couple of days but it’s unlikely to last, the snapper will start spawning any day now. On the bright side, it seems to be a brilliant season to catch rig from the shore, lots of great fish have been caught lately. Peter Gibbs Richmond swimmer Abbey Smale picked up from where she left off last summer in the first race of the national Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series in Takapuna on Saturday. The series opened this year with a new race, the 3.8km Swim the Shore race from Narrow Neck to Takapuna. Twelve Nelson swimmers were on the start line. From the start, a couple of lead groups of four or five emerged, with 53-year-old former Commonwealth Games swimmer Brent Foster in one and

17-year-olds Smale and Nelson swimmer Oxford Bayley in another. As they rounded the final buoy off Takapuna Beach, Foster had a slight lead over Bayley, going on to win by 20 seconds in 47min 34sec. Sticking with the leaders paid handsome dividends for Smale, as she continued her dominance of the series, finishing eighth overall in 49.28, three minutes ahead of Auckland swimmer Teresa Adam. It was a further 90 seconds back to Ella Crowe of Auckland, who took the women’s bronze medal.

Fraser Neill of Nelson placed 10th, winning the bronze medal in M20-24, while his father Hamish was 20th, also gaining a bronze in his age group - M55-59. Christina Harris was another Nelson swimmer to dominate, taking gold in F55-59, while Derek Eaton suffered a rare upset, having to be content with silver in M75-79. Dick Bennison had a good race to place third in M55-59. The democracy of ocean swimming was obvious as swimmers of all ages came ashore, swimmers of more than 70 mixing it with teenagers.
